Narrative Image Making

Narrative Photography Ariane Hughes

What is narrative photography? Narrative photography is the idea that photographs can be used to tell a story. Allen Feldman stated that "the event is not what happens. The event is that which can be narrated".

My Photography Here is some of the photography that I have taken of my friend, Natasha. These are a few of the pictures i like that show personality within them.

Narrative photography Inspiration and ideas Narrative photography is stories in the form of artwork and telling a story within a visual appearance of usually places, people or objects. There is a wide range of use for narrative photography to be interpreted by each artist which I am particularly intrigued by personally. Narrative photography has deeper meanings to the photo’s being took and the artwork created. Metaphors and ideologies are taken place within the pieces and can be interpreted individually by both the viewers and the creator.

Here is some of the artwork found while looking at Narrative Photography. This can personally give me inspiration and ideas for my own project work:

Key Words In Narrative Photography: Mind Map Emotion Happiness Sadness Crying Anger Loss Frustration Creativity Reality Distortion Thoughts Poetry Writing Joy Nature Connections Friends Family Pets and Animals Love Romance Lust Realness Raw Self Beauty Natural Trapped Society The World and Earth Fears and Anxieties Beauty in the Unknown The Underworld Sea Newborn Children Growing Stages of Life Personalities Body Parts Learning Nostalgia Daytime Nighttime Houses Home

These are some of the words that I thought resonated within the theme of Narrative Photography. I do believe that there are more that I will explore but these words give a short outline about what Narrative Photography can show

Narrative Story It was a sullen night yet filled with such excitement. Lights flashing in passion as the many people around me showed their appreciation through screams and shouts towards the band. The band played familiar songs which were more than perfect to sing along with.

Narrative story Neon lights were seen from the upcoming distance. Each step took us closer to these eerie neon squares. WHen i approached. The thorough feeling of alienation from the world, and everyone else seemed to disappear. It felt like a feeling of home.

Hid saib / photography

Hid Saib is a photographer that creates beautiful imagery using a neon light visual. I feel personally as this relates with my narrative stories as i have used very dark imagery with only simple neon lights to create the picture. I am especially intrigued by the work of hid saib and would like to further my knowledge and responses of this artist.

Artist: Anne Laure Autin: Blood Line

Anne Laure Autin wrote: BLOOD LINE: Once your parents passed away, you realise you’re next in line. My father was diagnosed with terminal cancer at the tender age of 64. Blood Line investigates how his inescapable disease and death also affected my own life. I saw my father’s pain and felt my own. My subjects are my daughters, my flesh and blood, his descendants. He experienced, I processed, they embody. With this work I address how terminal illness turns our lives upside down and affects communication and identity. When I was with my dad, he and I knew his days were numbered. I was able to say things I might not have shared before, but I also found myself withholding private thoughts. My version of reality and truth shifted. Blood Line illustrates the ensuing coding of language and our morphing sense of Self. Life as I knew it was radically redefined and my personal definition of a photograph evolved. In much of the work, I altered the surface of my pigment ink prints with the medical supplies that overtook our lives, such as gauze, suture thread, eosin…, even my own blood that I drew from my fingers. I cut the prints with scalpels and tore them by hand. By lineage, I am the literal link between my father and my daughters. Now I am also that link through the work of my hands. A year later he is gone, and when I am too, the photographs will still be there to connect us all.

In a lot of the photographs produced she uses methods like tearing, altering, and adding medical ephemera to the prints. Creating an effective narrative of deeply felt emotions.

Toni Pepe: The Second Moment

Toni Pepe’s work is particularly interesting in the way that the photographs have been taken and created. I feel as if Toni Pepe has created a beautiful display and approach to narrative photography that has been extremely effective and emotive.

About Toni Pepe “Toni Pepe currently teaches photography at Boston University. Her photographs and installation work address the construction of identity and the performativity of narrative, gender, and memory. Toni is most interested in utilizing photography as a forum for interdisciplinary expiration–she often employs literature, neuroscience, and cinema as source materials for her work. She has exhibited her images throughout the United States and abroad. Toni’s work has been displayed in solo exhibitions at the University of Notre Dame and the Center for Photography Woodstock. In additions, Toni was named a 2011 Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship Program finalist and is currently in the Danforth Museum’s collection as well as many private collections.”

Tom Wood: Photographer

About Tom Wood: Photographer Tom woods photography shows a popular but lovely view of film photography. I find his work to be especially intriguing and interesting. I feel as if it holds a very authentic view on photography. Even the flaws in his work are admired. Film is very unreliable on producing a perfect shot although i find this tremendously admirable in tom woods’ work. Tom Woods has produced a number of photography projects. The name of these famous ones being, looking for love, all zones off peak and modern street. Tom Woods falls under the category of a ‘street photographer’ mainly but also a portraitist and landscape photographer. He was born in ireland in 1951 and usually based in britain. Wood is ultimately best known for his photography in liverpool and merseyside from 1978 to 2001. Tom woods work has been published in five books and been shown in solo exhibitions. He has also previously received awards for his photography.

Nonsense Poetry

Top Nonsense Poetry artists are: ❖ Spike Milligan ❖ Edward Lear ❖ Lewis Carroll

Nonsense poetry is also known to be under the genre of literary nonsense.

Spike Milligan Spike Milligan wrote numerous poems in the style of nonsense poetry. Usually aimed towards children. Simple words and rhymes make up the poems that usually follow in rhythm and follow a random story line that does not make sense. Milligans most famous poem is called the ning nang nong. Alongside of the ‘on the ning nang nong’ ( which was voted the UK's favourite comic poem in 1998 in a nationwide poll, ahead of other nonsense poets including Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear) milligan wrote other poems. Some of the most famous include:

❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖

A silly poem Have a nice day granny Bazonka Mirror, mirror The abc feelings

Edward Lear Edward lear was an artist, musician, illustrator, author and poet. Lear was most well known for his nonsense poetry that he wrote. Born in england in middlesex on the 12th of May 1812. Many people call edward lear very talented for his catchy poetry, especially within his limericks. In his career edward lear published a book called ‘a book of nonsense’ which contained a volume of limericks. This book is still very well known and popular today as it helped originally popularize the genre of literary nonsense. .

Lewis Carroll Lewis Carroll was an english writer, mathematician, logician, anglican deacon and photographer. He is most well known for his writings, alice’s adventures in wonderland and it’s sequel through the looking glass. He also wrote many poems throughout his lifetime that fell under the genre of literary nonsense. Many dedicate a pride towards Lewis Carroll for his fantastic word play, logic and fantasy. Even from a young age Carroll was known for writing his own poetry and short stories.

Tom Phillips

Tom Phillips Tom Phillips is an English artist, at the age of 80 who is living in Clapham, London. He is best well known for the work onto book pages. This is what I am intrigued upon in his work too. Specifically, Tom Phillips is a painter, print maker and a collager. As well as collaging and creating these unique and beautiful book pages he also paints portraits His most famous portrait is of Dame Iris Murdoch. In the specific work I have chosen to show here I am very interested in how it is perceived. I especially like the different colours of the work. Another thing that I think works fantastically is the simplicity of Tom Phillips work. This simplicity of just biro on book pages is both effective and meaningful. The choice of words that Tom Phillips has chosen can also be reflected upon and is important to both the artist, Tom Phillips, and the viewer of the art.

Sara Fanelli

Sara Fanelli Sara Fanelli was born in 1969 in Florence. She is a native italian british artist and illustrator who is most well known for her children's picture books. In sara’s early life she came to london to study art at the camberwell college of art and then moving onto the royal college of art. Fanelli graduated from here in 1995. Sara Fanelli has had a full career in different branches and usually decides to split her time between illustration, books, and her own projects. Her work is particularly famous even to other countries where her books have been translated to other languages. She has also earned many awards and commendations for her astonishing distinctive work. Personally i am intrigued by her work as it shows a warmth that is suitable for childhood but also appropriate for all other ages that can still be interested. Her work shows an interesting approach as it shows a childlike manner in terms of illustration but it seems to have deeper meanings or interesting quotes of texts beside it. I very much personally enjoy learning and seeing sara fanelli’s work as it is appealing for the eye and sometimes has great messages within it.

My photography: GLITCH In these pictures i tried to create a glitch effect using photoshop. I feel as if the emotions are portrayed in the pictures using the features in the face. I added a sepia filter to the photographs to create a nostalgic and worn through effect as if the pictures are from the past. Digital collage making: process

In these images i have shown the process of creating a background for my digital collage. I have tried to create a interesting layout background that is busy but neat in ways. I feel as if this digital collage will be fitting to my work as it shows my style and themes running through my work or work i am yet to create. I also hope to show hints from other people’s work that i am inspired by. I feel as if i am trying to create a ‘memory effect by using things of the past like stamps and old book pages. When the collage progresses further i am planning to keep to this and show effective use of theme.

Poem about seahorse These are some of the poems that I fOund online that were helpful to create responses of illustrations to.

MY OWN WORK

Digital collage

Typography and fonts: adobe illustrator In illustrator i used the font tool to create a series of edits onto various fonts. I liked the curiosity of creating your own unique fonts. Here are some of the original ones i created.

Typography and fonts: adobe illustrator / da font Using the website, dafont i created some more typography edits using illustrator to add anchor points to my work.

Creating CreatingaaZine Zine In my work i have ideas of using collage and handmade elements to create a zine. This zine could possibly show ideas of music genre’s, girl power and the riot grrrl movement in punk, rock and grunge.

Zine Books, inspiration

This was a lovely zine that has nice hand drawn pictures within it. I like the theme and i may put this into my own work

This was a hand rendered zine put together. I like how there is a use of ink to create the work

In this zine i liked the stamp effect of the illustrations and how it was put together in a unique way making two books

This was a very appealing book with hand made drawings

Zine Books, inspiration This zine shows simplistic outlines that are appealing to the eye. Here is ones that i liked of owls and camera’s In this zine, it describes femininity in an liberating women and allowing women of all ages to wear what they like. IT is a very simplistic but appealing zine in appearance.

This book was very eye catching as a zine as i liked the cartoon like front that it had.

Riot Grrrl Zines Here is some of the previous riot grrrl zines that have been made

So Young magazine I feel like so young magazine is a very appealing layout and shows themes that would be interesting to my own work. The themes are music and it uses collage, hand drawings and digital work.

collages This is the first collage that i created using different parts of magazines. I created a layered effect that is quite abstract and unique. I tried using different patterns to contrast against one another within the collage.

collages This was the second collage that i created from magazine cut outs. I like this because even though it is very simple i think it works very effectively. Although next time i might try to interpret my theme within it more.

Digital drawings On these digital drawings i used photoshop to use a basic line drawing. I like the way they are very simple. They depict the musicians, d’arcy wretzky and kim gordon in the 90s when the riot grrrl movement was peaking. I feel i could improve on these and make them more intricate although i like how they are fairly basic too.

Zine Layout These are some of the layouts that i might use when creating my zine. Riot grrrl riot grrrl riot grrrl hhhhhhhhhhhhhghghhghghghghghghghghhgh hghghghghghghhghghghghghhhghghghghghg hghhghghghghgisksdsajkfjskfhjdjfhfjhfiold hnfslirhdeoilfhksfiskfhdnlkfhndfi’xyh’fnd l’KFUJDKFJMGOVUDSKJFDOPW;gjdvodwmlgfop vhegoldfjbvmodGUJEWgolfm;sadiksa0fuoew jfdsljfdpofujekal;dLa]R-9E890TUEIWYHTUI4YT HREIDKHNVKDSFUJEILKDHBN’Smipgd’hnpiDKU GJ9]WLDGJDOGUJEWO’LUSJDG]ODLSJFJOWg;lh n\dapyguje’pgyDFJIAEwgtupjepf’;olasugjwe9 ohjbkmrwo\,[yujndbl;csuh5jrpgoeuthIDK;u garj93qo’;lgjdgopw;lhp4w;o.LBJDGsopyh;dblv mxzfeyu20-opkfs;diptj4-]o\r;blfdjsh]toph;fl j`dtuiorwefujeqoleotudlewkHG9JPO’JMM

collages These are some of the collages that were put onto the final version of my zine. I have firstly made these by hand by using magazine cut outs, printed images of my theme mixed with interesting and eye catching imagery. After I scanned these collages in using photoshop I decided that i wanted a slight digital aspect to them. I then adjusted the colour with hue and saturation. On all of the following collages i decreased the saturation and chose a colour that fitted to the colour theme of the collage.

Collages (digitally edited) This was my favourite collage that i created. I liked how the digital editing turned out because it looks very gritty and nostalgic to the 90s. THese effects of making it look very gritty link in with my current theme and i feel it works nicely overall. When hand making this collage I chose to cut out letters from magazines. I used different pages, colours and shapes of letters to create a mismatched look that also fit in with my theme. Overall this is why it is my favourite.

Collages (digitally edited) This was also one of my favorite collages that i created. I like how i have entwined using the underwater coral background with the artist: bikini kill. I like how in this collage i have identified the riot grrrl artist. I also added small discreet additions to the collage like the little outlines around the bodies. I feel as if the colour theme is especially complimentary in this one. Bikini kill are one of the leading bands of the riot grrrl movement and i felt that it was especially important to include them within my collage artwork. THis is how i feel personally about their outlook and style, through collaging, colours and emotions.

Collages (digitally edited) This was probably my least favourite collage that i made. While it is probably my least favourite one, i do especially like both the original colours of the collage and the way it has been edited to a turquoise / green atmostphere. Like

Evaluation Evaluation Throughout this project I have created work that would progress and develop towards my final piece which was my zine. I studied the topic of narrative photography and zine work and tried to further my knowledge in different aspects. Some of these being my photography, my digital skills (illustrator etc) and also my skills in hand rendered topics. The format of my final piece and work came in the form of a powerpoint and a digital zine. In my project I learnt a variety of new skills. I found that parts of the project were difficult at the time and I had to attempt to overcome these problems and work around them. Something that I have found especially difficult is working on Adobe Illustrator. This was a new software that I hadn’t at all used previously. I found it extremely challenging to use new tools and software. I overcame this by researching and using helpsheets. Along with certain parts of our project that I struggled with. I also found new things that I thoroughly enjoyed. The thing that I enjoyed the most was collaging. While this was not a new skill that I learnt during this project, it is definitely one that I have furthered my skills on. I was inspired by a number of artists during these project. While studying different aspects of the project I have found many contrasting artists that fit throughout different parts of the project. The first artist that I found to be especially influential is Sara Fanelli. Fanelli creates her own illustrations that are unique and appealing to the eye. This artist inspired me to create my own illustrations with more abstract and unique qualities.

evaluation Another artist that I found to be influential to my own work was the photographer, Tom Wood. This photographer uses film and themes of past life, vintage and old style to create beautiful imagery. I found this artist to be very influential because of the time that Tom Wood was working from. This fits in with my final zine as I created collages that were set in a time zone of the 90s riot grrrl movement. This could be viewed as vintage and old compared to if I was to collage in a time zone of the modern day. I have learnt many things about zines that I was previously not aware of. I found this to be interesting and knowledgeable. The thing that was most useful to inspiring my own zine creation was the types of style and format that a zine can come in. I also learnt a lot about the layouts that are commonly used in zines. Throughout the project I came across barriers where things went wrong and i had to improve or re-do them. As mentioned previously, I especially struggled with illustrator, this is also the place where most of my work went wrong. When creating my digital collage I found it difficult to place my digital drawing and collaged background together and make it appealing. For my final zine I used hand rendered collages to create it. To originally create these collages I usually ripped different parts of magazines, images and words up to create an appealing and eye catching collage that would fit in with my theme. Once I had finished my handmade collage I scanned these in through photoshop and edited the colours to make these more appealing and fitting. I usually changed the contrast, hue and saturation with the scanned in collage. Overall I feel as if it has been successful in the zine although if I had more time in the future I would try to develop my skills within my own independent work. In reflection I feel as if my project has been helpful to me personally and in the form of my work. I have learnt a lot about new topics and ideas.
