In the Proclamation of the Bauhaus. Walter Gropius outlined how he envisaged a utopian guild that combined architecture, sculpture and painting into one single artistic expression. His idea was to train artisans and designers to produce useful and beautiful objects that were the visual expression of a new style (Bohaglass).

HISTORY In 1925, the Bauhaus moved from Weimar to Dessau, where Gropius designed a new building to house the school. This building contained many features that later became hallmarks of modernist architecture (Griffith).

leadership (Griffith).

Meyer resigned as director of the Bauhaus in 1930. He was replaced by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Mies once again reconfigured the curriculum, with an increased emphasis on architecture(Griffith).

The unstable political situation in Germany, combined with the vulnerable financial condition of the Bauhaus, caused Mies to relocate the school to Berlin in 1930, where it operated on a

reduced scale (Griffith).

During the unstable years of Nazi Germany, the Bauhaus school was forced to shut down, many of the instructors and key figures of the Bauhaus emigrated to the United States, where their work and their teaching philosophies were spread and influenced generations of young artists and designers.

PURPOSE The Bauhaus school approach was to educate students with knowledge in art and craftsmanship, their goal was to establish a strong relationship between the two. One of the Bauhaus main purposes was to deviate the application of artistic qualities in products from only the wealthy and bring aesthetically pleasing designs to the world of mass production.

The school was represented by the slogan

The Bauhaus movement was an attempt to connect the qualities of art with the everyday life experiences. It introduced the world into a new creative era of practical manufacturing and led to a resurgence of interest in the artistic realm. The Bauhaus style had a deep influence in subsequent developments in architecture, graphic design, interior design, industrial design, and typography. Our world trends and environments today wouldn’t have been the same if the Bauhaus movement had never existed.
