I’m a 25 years old architect from Italy and I’m really open to new experiences and exchange with different realities, I always approach with great enthusiasm, maximum commitment and seriousness to all the opportunities. The set of international experiences undertaken in recent years have developed in me an active curiosity towards new cultures and traditions. I had the opportunity to design in international areas putting myself in front of economic, social and definitely challenging realities.

2

Through this portfolio you will come across a variety of scales and approaches to the project; this is the consequence of choices I made during my studies and working experiences: I wanted to discover as many project’s facets as possible in order to be able to solve problems by an indirect and creative approach, typically through viewing the problem in a new and unusual light.

Slottsskogsringen Göteborg activity park CF MØLLER office International competition Anne Katrine Arrildt, Arianna Balboni, Lars V. Christensen, Pablo Alejo Barros

With the SlottsskogsRingen - Century Activity Park - we wish to create a new, different and dynamic parkroom that unites nature and man. The activity park was created to include a broad audience, then we wish the Centenary Activity Park to be a place that inspires even more to activity and proximity to nature. The ambition has been to add something new to Göteborg’s activity landscape and so on add something that is not already in the city. We want to create a unique place - a new destination in Gothenburg - which combines the city’s amazing landscape potential along with new groundbreaking activities and places to stay. A place that works for both the everyday and specific events. So therefore, dear sports enthusiasts, families with children, retirees, teens, athletes, children and everyone else - Welcome to Slottskogsringen- The Park for All. SlottsskogsRingen is created with the desire to strengthen the city’s current landscape and cultural-historical qualities. The design is based on a simple concept: Clear up, preserve and reinforce. The design consists of two main elements, the Ring and the Activity Band. The ring works as the project’s large multifunctional room and frames beautifully in Slottsskogen, east and east west hill, as well as Slottsskogvallen. The activity band is the living room of the project and is filled with varied activities for different user groups. It is blended with blue-green patterns that give the park its expression with clear niches and relations. While the Ring relates to the big scale, the Activity Band shares the park in smaller niches and rooms. This prevents any one particular type of activity from dominating area.

Strategy Concept

Slottsskogsvallens EntrĂŠpark.

Build on cultural history and clean up.

The project area is today characterized by different, and divided, functional areas and spaces, which together interfere with the design of the adiacent landscape.

The area is cleared up so that the place and the glare appear and underline the Slottskogsvallen, east and west hill and Slottskogen. The most important cultural-historical elements such as the shoulder, the fountain, existing trees and the clubhouse and lanes of the boule association are preserved and form the basis of the new park.

8 Reinforce the glory.

Enhance the gap.

The events ring reinforces the experience of the great glimpse of Slottskogsvallen, and creates a new identity-creating gathering point.

The Everyday Activity Band strengthens the space between the great landscape grip. Nature is activated as a series of different activity islands.

SkyTran Five seconds street-Rotterdam Professor: Winy Maas Tutor: Tihamér Salij Future Models: Arend van Waart Student: Arianna Balboni

How good is it to stand still? Shouldn’t we go ahead? Is acceleration a tool for that? Can we test that? Can we make a world and a city that doesn’t stand still but goes fast? How to speed up? What technologies are there to do that? Can we really make a city that speeds up? Can we apply that on a given site? The studio will test the impacts of acceleration on the street level. This studio zooms into the architecture of a city that is built upon speed and direct accessibility. What kind of architecture can accommodate speed and performance of high speed vehicles? How is organization and apartment layout change according to the different vehicles used? What would a neighbourhood look like if the only means of transport would be a vehicle reaching 500 kmh/h?

15

Strategy

The research project started by a deep analysis of an existing street in Rotterdam. What is the existing program? Who are the users? How do they move?

Nowadays street has a certain shape because we move through it using cars, bicycles or walking. But what if we can only use one vehicle?

16

What if this vehicle is a personal single seat one, moving on hanging rails, whit a maximum speed of 240 Km/h? Streets can be redesigned according to it and to optimize the speed of movements.

Final configuration, all volumes analyzed from the first study were completely reorganized and put in an equal distribution according to the new configuration of the road.

Vehicle

What is a Skytran SkyTran is a Personal Rapid Transit system first proposed in 1990, and under development . Lightweight one passenger vehicles suspended from elevated passive magnetic levitation tracks are expected to achieve the speed of 240 Km/h. A prototype of the skyTran vehicle and a section of track have been constructed. Inductrack, the proposed magnetic levitation system for skyTran, has been tested by General Atomics with a full-scale model. UniModal Inc. is now collaborating with NASA to test and develop skyTran. A skyTran system is being built in Israel as a pilot project. As of January 2016 work is ongoing with the test demonstration track. Additional projects have been proposed in France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Slovenia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

MoorThanARoof A Home Away from Home International competition “A Home Away from Home” new housing solutions for asylum seekers in Holland. Arianna Balboni

This proposal addresses the needs of the COA A (abbreviation of ‘Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers’) and the municipalities of flexible and temporary homes for refugees who easily build on temporarily vacant places in city, town or countryside. The reference is the prefabricated container house, but an improved version of them with natural light, comfort and spaciousness. “More than a Roof” refers to portability, switching ability and stackability of the container, but delivers through its triangular shape and friendly materials a much more pleasant climate than the container. Therefore the property is also attractive for other target groups. The materials are friendly, replaceable, recyclable and renewable. Hospitality:In this house you do not feel like stacked or stored in a container, but safe and welcome. There is light on all fronts, both direct and diffuse, making the ‘tunnel effect’ of the container is avoided. Living and sleeping are separated by the height of the triangular shape. Good insulation makes the house not only comfortable but also soundproof. A place to relax even though you’re right in the heart of the city. The warm wood and the lightness of the fabric at the same time give a cozy, modern and unique atmosphere to the home. Durability:The house is constructed of light wood with steel links and cross-references. Few energy is needed for the production of the materials. Since the greatest part of the facade is a translucent glass surface, which contributes to the lightness and thereby transportability. The house is well insulated with R-values of 5.3 for the walls to 6.3 m2K /W for the floor. It is sufficient for heating a pair of infra-red panels. A gas connector is not necessary. The property consists of materials to disassemble and separate. The insulation is made from recycled plastic bottles. Economic efficiency:The houses can be installed as individual houses or stacked in two to three layers. In that case, a separate structure is made for the digestion. The property is easily producible; almost every contractor with a workshop can make the home. Thus, the production is not controlled by one major player in the market and can be spread simultaneously across the country. The bathroom is compact and can be carried out as a separate prefabricated unit. The property is easily transportable as container, truck or boat. The property can also be composed of single wall and floor elements on location.

25

Strategy

-The nodules can be easily stacked one from the other. -Thanks to this property can be used both as individual small houses, as larger residential buildings.

-The use of translucent walls allows a life surrounded by natural light . -This also allows a good illumination of the interior with a remarkable energy saving.

26

-The modules are assembled previously and thanks to their size they can be transported when they are already complete. -This also allows you to remove and easily transfer the housing where it is needed.

-With a flexible structural system and connected it with comfortable spaces, you have the opportunity to create a variety of buildings of different sizes. depending on the needs

-One of the purposes of the project is to obtain a good thermal insulation, then it was made attention to the choice of materials isolant.

-Wood structure -Recolan polyester - fiber insulation recycled from PET bottles

- R- value

wall = 5,320 m2K/W - R- value floor= 6,320 m2K/W

-The parts of the building are assembled without the use of glues

ReLink

Reconnect,Reactivate,Requalify Professor: Aldo Aymonino Student: Arianna Balboni

My master’s thesis is based on the experience gained during the “Metroplitan Workshops” held in Santiago, Chile. The project area is located in the historic center of the city of Santiago. It is born on the track of an old abandoned railway, after the crisis of the transport on rails in Chile when the one on wheels began to develop. This area created for years a limit that divided the university campus area on the west side from the cultural area of museums on the east one. On the north / south sides we can find respectively one of the main parks of the city that is “Quinta Normal” and the Central Station. The aim of the project is therefore to reconnect these key points of the city, redeveloping them at the same time. The project consists on a park along the north-south axis that reconnects the station with the “Quinta Normal” and a large multi-purpose building that houses activities and services aimed at both the campus students and the inhabitants of the city, so as to social interaction between them. finally, under the large hybrid building, there is a large square at the -1 level designed as a new pole and venue for events in the city.

31

Strategy

Building Connectivity As an hub, the building recreates the urban soil that has been divided by the barrier of the old railway.

Building Connectivity exerting pressure on the surrounding terrain the building creates perpendicular accesses from the city.

Courtyards Shape The shape is inspired by traditional Santiago courtyard homes.

Community the building accesses gives shape to lowered squares where community activities take place.

The purpose of the project was to experiment a new form of living: cohousing. First I tried to mix public and private spaces together, to try to push the inhabitants of the residential complex to interact not only among themselves but also with the rest of the city. Cohousing is designed to become a new center of attraction of the city, of fering public services such as the library, film library, theater, supermarket etc.. The ramp that connects, as a common thread, the buildings can be considered itself a place for socializing. In fact, widening in some places, creates common spaces equipped with tables and libraries becoming a meeting place.

Professor: Aldo Aymonino Students: Arianna Balboni, Alessandra Di Cerbo, Daniele Chiorato, Ludovica Marcadella, Jessica Pignone.

From a first analysis of Brasilia and its satellite towns, we noticed several methods of land use and green. In richer residential areas (such as that of Lake Norte), green areas are mainly private spaces, while social ones are much less. At Taguana, green private areas are surrounded by tall walls and all sides of the road are considered and treated as a back sides. On the contrary in very poor residential areas, such as Santa Maria, green spaces are very few but all used as public ground. In the city of Brasilia, on the other hand, the green part of the so called “Quadra” has a double meaning: even if it is born as a private area in fact it can be also used by the whole population. We thought then at a plan that would work as a link between these two areas. In the “quadra” then there are both private courts and mixed-use ones in which the whole population is permitted. Finally we can found here a main route filled with services, that leads up to public park near the square.

AsylumInDamè Small Scale Big Change

Professor: Massimo Perriccioli Student: Arianna Balboni

The project idea was born from the non-profit organization about a serious problem in the Ivory Coast: malaria and its contagion by mosquito bite. It was therefore decided to build a sort of second skin that enveloped the asylum protecting it from mosquitoes and giving children a safe place to play and learn. Due to the poor availability of mosquito nets it was thought to use a great resource that comes from the textile culture of the place. This second skin is then formed by light and breathable fabric panels that create a colorful and lively atmosphere. The building is designed as a versatile space, more then for the management of the nursery in the morning hours, its function can be self-determined by the population itself according to the needs that gradually ahead. The project is based on a careful study of architecture, construction technologies and local materials that have determined structurally the building. This choice stems from the desire to rediscover traditional techniques now considered obsolete in relation to those imported from Europe, but totally represent the most immediate and effective response to climate and structural problems. The simple construction of this building aims to involve the population in the construction of the work, in order to make them learn these techniques and be able to replicate autonomously, depending on the needs of the community.

Professor: D’annuntiis Marco Students: Arianna Balboni, Elisa Cardinali

The economic crisis also affects the large malls that are slowly dying leaving huge skeletons gaps that often turn into a state of neglect, and it is difficult to find new functions to these huge buildings. This situation is now reality in the United States and is slowly spreding in our country. To avert this epidemic I tried to rethink the malls under new points of view, transforming them from mere consumption buildings in new public poles. This is what we tried to do with the shopping center “The furnace” of Jesi, a former furnace transformed in the 80s in a mall, that is now no more used. The main idea of the project is to expand the function of the shopping center with new functions for the population. These new features are identified by a new front that contains a library and an emerging element that houses an exhibition gallery. The civil service and the commercial one support each other.
