WORK SAMPLE 2014 YUNYA TANG
ACADEMIC WORK My academic interest is a mixture of architecture, landscape architecture and urban design. During my 5 years study both in BJFU and AA, I have mastered the essential skills for design and formed a depper insight of landscape: the mission of landscape architect is to create a healthier relationship between nature, city and human. This insight may help me to perceive from a higher level for landscape or urban projects. Technically, I am interested in the new tools such as scritping, GIS, and parametric design and how they can make a contribution to landscape design. Thanks to the progress of technology, I am very looking forward to the revolution to in landscape or urban design aspects with the new tools and I am willing to practice this in my projects.

Tidal Force Mechanism The British territorial crust is subsiding and global warming makes the southern England in siege. Facing to this invasive flooding, the short-term flooding protection tends to act upon a centralized territorial framework. From Cameron's speech, the Flood Re policy presents more capital distributed towards the centralized model, which might cause a huge loss in areas along the coastal communities. Our proposition seeks to revert the broken economical model with using tidal force as instrument for transformation. Here flooding acts as an agent to influence the regional disparities, and potentiate decentralization. The project introduces a series of regulations to establish framework for independent economies. Instead of passive hard engineering, we choose to co-exist with flooding physically and economically. Activity on site, uses tidal creek as agent of change, space can be transformed in functional spaces such as hybrid agriculture, recreational landscape, aquaculture, etc. The land value is even boosted by flooding. As an alternative, the intervention seeks to mobilize territories effected by flooding, enabling local actor economies, and propose a territorial adjustment towards liberalization of territorial disparities caused by centralization.

This is the course project of the Summer School of Tsinghua University. The purpose is to learn the basis of parametric design and operation of maya and grasshpper. The project is to design a bridge in Vienna, connecting a popular outdoor bar and a grand hotel. My concept is very simple as I regard crossing bridge is a simple movement from one side to another. According to the speed of different activities, running, walking, cycling , I assigned the steps with specific pace. Individual Work, Tsinghua University Summer school, 2012

Chinese traditional pavillion design is mandatory to landscape architect in China. The whole structure is made with wood. All the parts have a rigid proportion requirement which is associates with the size of whole structure. This pavillion is my invention based on the knowledge of traditional hexagon pavillion as I add ed an round roof to to make it 2 storeys which never exsits in the history.

This project contains a large-scale urban design and a smaller-scale wetland design, which share a common idea to break the boundary of nature and city. Qianhai is the second city center of Shenzhen in the future. In an urban design international competition, James Corner who designed 5 finger rivers to guide the development of city, won the first prize. After that, city designers and landscape architects have to develop in depth for the detailed design with his idea. The idea of progressive circle is a gene which is expressed through all the scales. For the city, the different hierachy has different circulation density, public transportation, and green percentage. For the park, the participation of people gradually increases from sea side to city side.

For a landscape planning, the whole park is organized with the same logic of progressive circle. It represents the idea in a smaller scale. The whole park is devied into three circles. The circle approximate to city is used as leisure park equiped with recreational infrastructure. The circle adjacent to the sea is ecologically sensitive and used as a conservation which the visitors are unaccesible to. The circle in bewtween will be used as the wild park where we only offer a simple timber pathway. The whole park is organized also with the natural water purification process. The wetland associated with the water treatment workflow and on the other hand it can create various habitation for wild creatures.

Hand drawing aerial view The detialed landscape design is mainly focused on the leisure park. I have designed all the landscape features in the park including the 4 pavillions for small musical concert, chess playing for locals, entrance plaza and meditaion garden, etc.. Here I am eager to create co-existence between human activity and nature which is more healthy and harmony, which can not only to echo James Corner's urban design idea, but also show the value of Chinese traditional living philosophy.
PROFESSIONAL WORK From an design assistant, I grew up quickly to a designer within the 2 years when I worked for BLY. I have been involved over 20 projects including regional planning, landscape design, and architectural design. I can individually take charge of some simple landscape designs, making perspective and plan drawings. These projects sculpt me to be more adaptive to projects of various types and scales.

The government decided to transform the cauldron into a landmark and build a plaza to memorize the great event of city. Our group, President Workshop of BLY, which is led by the french landscape architect, Lolivier Virginie, has taken this assignment. The plaza was consisted with 3 mainly parts: a water pool around the cauldron, several circle stages with 5 different materials and the green space around. I was in charge of the masterplan drawing, construction design, communication between design group and mayor etc.

I have been working on site with contractors to supervise the construction of ponds and platform. From that work I have learned the basic construction knowledge and tried to develop a communication skill with workers. In order to create more attractive plaza, a series of interactive design has been assigned. We have made some laser performance with laser which associates with the sprayer in the ponds.

“Air,fire, water, earth, themmatic courtyard design Four thematic courtyard has been developed. I aimed to make it sentimental and cultural symbolic. A mixture use of sand, vegetation (including grass, shrub, trees and moss), water, pebbles are able to influence the atmosphere. The objects and prospect are linked to a zen culture in which Chinese believe they can have the best relax both physically and mentally.
Architectural design
I have also participated to part of the architectual design. We are inspired the local dwelling-Kejia dwelling which is normally in a circle cylinder and a courtyard with water inside the building. We interpret this form with modern material and SPA related functions.
