GRATIOT LIBRARY

Eastern Market is vital spot in the Southestern Downtwon Detroit area. These markets and business allow vendors to sell thier produce, meats, fish and other good not just food to the people of Detroit. This development has helped Detroit nourish into the thriving city it is today and is pushing Detroit towrd a brighter future. This idea for a 21st century library will be open year round and will accommodate the needs of the pedestrians.

Our site is located in an empty lot inbetween the Gratiot Meat Market and a hardware store. The Gratiot Meat although physically seperate from the sheds brings in a lot of business that is crucial to the Eastern Market Development. To enhance that connection with the sheds and the meat market our design for the library were to re-establish that connection with the other half of the eastern market located over the freeway.

Murals painted by local artists, contracted by the Eastern Market Corporationocated in our site. When designing the library I wanted to leave some of the art as visible as possible as well as propsing new murals for the design of the library.

Some of the key features for this modern 21st century library includes an outdoor park area underneath the second floor which also has oudoor bookshelves for reading outside. The topography has also been altered to allow apatheather like seating to allow for performances. A small portion of the first floor is inclosed with modular seating for interior use and reading spaces.

The second floor is the more public area with computer stations and also exterior seating to allow a visual connection with the first floor. There are skylights that allow light to travel as far as the first floor.

The third floor is the more private area of the library with most of the stacks and offices being located on this level. No exterior spaces in the third floor but have sklights which allow for more light to come through.

Circulation -The red highlights the circulation of pedestian throughout the site and through Gratiot Meat Market as being the main connection point with the Eastern Market Sheds.

Engagment -The blue highlights the circulation of pedestian throughout the site with the proposed library as being the main connection point with the Eastern Market Sheds and the commercial businesses on Gratiot Ave.

SKILLMAN LIBRARY

The Skillman Library, located in downtown Detroit, is a branch of the Detroit Public Library. We analyzed the site and created a charchter. Then by some sort of visual representaion created a Narrative and designed a space for that specific person. Here we follow the life of an old African American man named Aaron. The space designed for him is an outdoor park area for him to sit and tell his stories to young kids. It can also act as park and meeting space for the community.

ELMWOOD PARK LIBRARY

The Elmwood Park branch library is located on Detroit East side. This library is on a strip mall with a residential aparmetn complex in the back. Taking into the sourounding retail I decided to renovate the middle plaza, makeing it into a modular park recessed nto the ground. This would allow for more seating and also engagment with the residents and library users. This new park space would alow for events and pop-up spaces.

WALDORF EXTENSION The Waldorf School in Detroit is an elementary school with a unorthodox way of teaching. This new extension is moved closer to the sidewalk to better engage and welcome the community. The extension is then conencted with two exterior tunnels with extruding windows to provide a space within the tunnel to angage the park aswell. The multi-use space is then held up with structural fins that allow for isolated views of the street.

KNEEDING INSTITUTE The Kneeding Cultural institute is a cooking school looking to engage the community in the Windsor area of Ontario, Canada. This three level institute offers an open kitchen on the bottom, with the culinary school on the second level and residential apartments on the third floor.

The overall design was based on this idea of pushing and pulling different elements to create different overhangs throuhgout the building. Also to engage the commnity, the building is open to the public so that community can see what is going inside this culinary school. There was also landscaping being down on the front and rear of the building aswell as activating the corridor connecting the alley way to the sidewalk.

STITCH INSTITUTE

The client for this projects wants a school built in his image. This proposed horticulture graduate school for the Liberty Hill site in Cincinnati, Ohio will engage the community and provide learning for local residence perusing this career. Our biggest challenge is designing over a steep hill and figuring out a way to connect the bottom with the top. Located in a mostly residential area, with a major intersection located at the bottom of the hill and freeways just east of the site. We must keep the circulation going through the hill to allow people to get to their houses and up the hill. This institute is also helping engage the community by having a community space where they can host events. There is also a vertical garden greenhouse, so the community can get involved with the horticulture school as well.

The school is located on the ground floor, while the residential area is located on the second floor. Both buildings cross on top of each other, this intersection allows for an elevator that goes in the middle of both buildings. One of the main themes where the idea of isolated framed views which allow for different views of downtown Cincinnati. The outdoor area also allows for a park and steps to get to the top of the hill.

INFOBOX PROJECT With the upcoming development of the Eastern Market to expand and renovate the sheds and I-375 we designed a space or InfoBox that would house that development idea. This space is meant to be seen as a space where the community and pedestrians can come to learn about the upcoming plan for the Eastern Market

The InfoBox I proposed would be located over I-375 where the current pedestrian bridge is located. This would redesign the pedestrian bridge to enhance the vital connection between the Gratiot Meat Matket and Eastern Mrket Sheds. This would also allow for pop-up spaces for vendors on the main and lower level of the bridge. The InfoBox would then be located over the bridge to allow the view of the entire Eastern Market and downtown Detroit.

EAMES CASE STUDY

RHYTHM & BALANCE

Based on a two-dimensional plan drawing communicating the idea of rhythm, that was designed using basic geometric spaces, we explored different iterations of a three-dimensional interpretation of the two-dimensional drawing. We then choose one of those iterations, and further explored its three dimensional qualities through the use of detailed line drawing using different line weights to effectively illustrate the idea in an elevation and section drawing showing various depths.

Playing with the idea of mass and void, we reconstructed three solid cubes by extracting pieces and inserting those same piece them back anywhere and in any form on the cube. Each cube had to be either symmetrical, asymmetrical or both. Once each iteration was complete one cube was chosen. Experimenting with point, line and plane, the cube was reconstructed into its final iteration from the mass we had reconstructed to a cube with only points, lines and planes. This process helped us create a mass that would be the bases of our idea and then work backwards to create a space within that cube that would be transformed and placed into a programmable environment.
