01

BALANCE & RHYTHM

For the first part of this project we constructed two-dimensional drawings expressing or demonstrating a certain pattern. Rhythm was a key attribute in most of the patterns. We then explored different iterations of the drawing into a threedimensional interpretation using basic model making material. Now instead of just looking on how rhythm is expressed on plan we started to study how rhythm could be expressed in a model. The drawings represent sections and plans of various iterations of the pattern we originally whose to further explore.

02

RECONSTRUCTION

Point, Line, Plan and Volume. We were given a task to reconstruct three solid cubes by extracting pieces and inserting those same piece them back anywhere on the cube. We could not add anymore to the cube or leave anything out. One cube had to be symmetrical, the other cube asymmetrical and the last one both. Once each iteration was complete we choose a cube and started reconstructing it into points and lines. Once we understood the form of the our volume we began inserting planes to create spaces in this cube. We then placed the cube in a site to examine how it could interact in this environment.

WALDORF SCHOOL

The Waldorf School in Detroit is an elementary school with a unique way of teaching. The extension itself is unique as it seems as a piece of the school is extending closer to the sidewalk to better engage and welcome the community. The extension is then conencted with two exterior tunnels with extruding windows to provide a space within the tunnel to visually angage the playground. The multi-use space is then held up with structural fins that provide isolated views oof the neighborhood.

EAMES CASE STUDY

The Eames House case study project helped us breakdown a key concept specific to this case study and represent it visually on a new board layout. My concept: Modularity.

NE SECTION

16

With the upcoming development of the Eastern Marketand I-375, we designed a space or Infobox that would show case the development. The Info-box would be located over I-375 where the current pedestrian bridge is located. This would incorporate the pedestrian bridge to enhance the vital connection between the Gratiot Meat Market and Eastern Market Sheds. This would also allow for pop-up spaces for vendors on the main and lower level of the bridge. The Info-box is elevated to allow a 360 view of the Eastern Market and downtown Detroit.

KNEEDING INSTITUTE Windsor, CA

18

The Kneeding Cultural institute is a culinary school looking to engage the community in the Windsor area of Ontario, Canada. This three level institute offers an open kitchen with the culinary school on the second level and residential apartments on the third floor. The overhangs around the building act as thresholds between the exterior and interior. The building is open visually to the pubic, allowing the community to engage and view the spectacle inside. Landscaping is used to create boundaries around the building as well as activating the corridor connecting the alley way to the sidewalk.

STITCH INSTITUTE

This Horticulture Graduate school for the Liberty Hill community in Cincinnati, Ohio will engage the community and provide learning for local residence. It will act as a community asset where community members can interact with the school and various community programs. The site for the school is mostly residential, with a major intersection located at the bottom of the hill. The new circulation going through the hill will allow people to get to up and down the hill more efficiently and safely. The school is located on the ground floor, while the residential area is located on the top floors. One of the main themes was the idea of isolated framed views which allow for different views of downtown Cincinnati.

SKILLMAN LIBRARY

The Skillman Library, located in downtown Detroit, is a branch of the Detroit Public Library. We analyzed the site and created a character. Then utilizing our knowledge of the site and its context, created a Narrative for that specific person. Here we follow the life of an old African American man. The space designed for him is an outdoor park area for him to be able to sit and recall past events and buildings in the area. It can also act as park and meeting space for the community.

30

09

ELMWOOD PARK LIBRARY

The Elmwood Park branch library is located on Detroit East side. This library is on a strip mall with a residential apartment complex located in the back. Again using our knowledge and research of the site, I created a series of Narrative drawing/collages that captures the perspective of a teenager and a senior who inhabit the space. Now using these drawings as inspiration we created a space for both characters. I decided to renovate the middle plaza, making it into a modular park submerged 3’ into the ground. This would allow for more seating and also engagement with the residents and library users. This new park space would allow for events and pop-up spaces.

GRATIOT LIBRARY

Eastern Market is a vital spot in the Southeastern downtown Detroit area. These markets and businesses allow vendors to sell produce, meats, fish, clothing and jewelry. This development has helped Detroit nourish into the thriving city it is today and is pushing the city toward a brighter future. The idea for a 21st century library breaks down the anatomy of a library and how a library can be adapted to meet the needs of the modern world.

Some of the key features for this 21st century library includes an outdoor park area underneath the second floor. Almost the whole first floor is an outdoor library space with bookshelves and modular seating. The topography has also been altered to allow amphitheater like seating for performances and other events. A small portion of the first floor is in closed with modular seating for interior reading spaces.

BANGLATOWN

The Bangladeshi community has been growing in Hamtramck for over the past decade. In this community we see a diversity of Muslim speaking families interacting with other communities such as the Yemen and Polish families. Our vision is to define a cohesive, collaborative, and unified neighborhood where diversity and identity can be the influence for the future development of Banglatown. As a group we identified key assets, but two proposals that I worked on which with my group were: the redevelopment of an abandoned school park and the lot on Joseph-Campau to create a central community gathering space. Those assets as well the future development of the Inner Circle Green-way act as the backbone for our groups community development of Banglatown.

GARAGE CULTURAL The Southwest community has been growing in Detroit and it does not just stop at W. Vernor it continuous all the way up Livernois to Michigan Ave. Our object is to refined civic commons by selecting an existing community asset and applying the characteristics of a civic commons to that asset. Garage Cultural is a Latino based community run organization that is based of a renovated Tortilla factory. Activities at Garage include music concerts, performances, art and ceramics, wood shop and home to Motor City Dance Academy. Garage is currently only using 1/3 of the building and its potential. Garage Cultural is seeking to expand its program and utilize more of the existing space. While keeping to the owners ideas, Garage Cultural as a civic commons will engage the community though interlocking and overlapping spaces that would allow for a more social, diverse, creative and cultural common place.
