The Shift

space and air

Academic Work Academic Work

The Shift – space and air The intention of the project is to create a performative utopian environment. The chosen site is in Studio B located in North Melbourne meat market. “Air” is used as a key element of the project. Hairdryers shift air from the space into the modules, this leads to the inflation of the structure, and therefore the existing space is no longer the same. Air is invisible but here it shifts the whole space and the environment. As people walk into the room, the space is limitless and quiet. It is a utopian performative space, which projects attention onto the performers. As the structure starts to inflate, the space starts to change. The walls are inflating towards the audience and performers. The crowd is being pushed to the central of the room. The gaps between people are becoming smaller. The panic starts. Along with the sound of the hairdryers, the space is congested with sense of chaos and fear. Suddenly the space becomes limited, and unpredictable. It becomes an ultimate dystopic space, where occupants are vulnerable; and the shifting of the space becomes overwhelming. This is where audience’s reaction becomes part of the performance; Audience and performers are inosculated as a whole.

The space continues shifting until the structure is fully inflated. There is a moment of stillness, where occupants start to connect with the each other as well as the space. The space is no longer void and infinite, it is so limited that occupants are allowed to physically embrace it and immerse into it. The physical gaps between people have disappeared, it is a moment of utopia where connection and interact spontaneously overflow. As the structure starts to deflate, the gaps become larger within people and the space. The de-forming structure has given the sense of loss and emptiness to the space, where Dystopia re-appears. The space has proofed that utopia and dystopia exist upon each other. Overall, it is an ever-changing utopian/dystopian space in the shifting of air.

Luminous Painting

LUMINOUS PAINTING

The abstract beauty of the painting on the wall is created by an installation which portrays the journey of light through the various colored and dichroic glasses, similar to that of life's bright and dark moments caused by hardships of life and hard work in life. The journey involves light refracting of glass of various colors and reflecting of a mirror onto the wall. It acts like a map of various emotions and moods during the life of a being. These emotions and moods constantly change with the ups and downs in life, just like the cycle of various colors of light, this is portrayed by using a rotary device which changes the angles of interaction of light with the glasses. By manipulating the shadow and texture of the glasses, the installation creates different perceptions from different angles of the same objects. A chrome paper has been used on the surface of the box to maximize reflection and create a variety of designs. Light plays a major part just as it does in daily life. Light has transited reality into illusion by projecting a pile of useless glasses into a beautiful and serene painting, which further on creates a sense of hope. and positive view of life. The main aim of the installation is to pass on this view to create positive interactions and perceptions so that individuals may explore and discover the multitude of possibilities of the moments in life.

Aquarium Library

Academic Work

Aquarium Library The hybrid of the project is aquarium library. It is a library with the added in aquarium program, both co-exist in the same building. Bringing in the aquarium program into the existing Elsternwick library is to respond to the social issue of local area. Research showing the increased urbanization of the local area as well as the advanced technology and rapid pace of living, adult and children spending most of their time inside of transportation or at home, watching tv and videos. This has resulted children in the low participation in activities; for adult, stress and strains are not being able to transcended. By adding the aquarium program into the local library, it brings the community together by providing a place for them to escape, and in contact with nature. It also responds to the local council’s planning and development of “deliver environmental initiatives, biodiversity and sustainability”, encouraging children involve in the conservation education and animal care. In the design process, I studied Zaha Hadid’s LOPEZ DE HEREDIA PAVILION and FORM IN MOTION. The spaces are constructed by having one form, and making small variation to the form across the whole space. This has inspired me to look into forms from ocean, bringing sense of motion from the underwater world into the library space. Marine creatures moves follows the movement of water. I developed the form of the movement, and applying to the space.

As you travel upstairs, you will see the main reception. On the left hand side is the reading area for adult. The seating area is designed to bring people together to communicate and share as a community, which is visually connected to the reception area to create a sense of movement across the whole space. On the right hand side is the children section, which is a more relaxed area featured with low soft seating.

The circular walk-in aquarium space in the children area provides a different experience as oppose to the main open area. It is more intimate and enclosed space with sense of mystery. The aquarium tank runs across the whole back section with the bookshelf building in front of it. Along the side of the second floor, is the private seating area. People could read a book and watching a swimming fish.

‘wrap’ the space across inside and out with the form, to inform the space with sense of belonging. As visitors approach the building from exterior, they will see the form in motion provide to the sense of direction towards the main entrance.

The form is applied in a hollow way in constructing windows on the façade, this allow visitors to see what’s on the inside of the building; together, it constructs the identity of the whole space as aquarium + library. The form is applied across the whole interior as bookshelf, seating, partitions, etc.
