LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY

With the help of donors like you, Regions has further established itself as a unique community asset. Combining a strong financial model with critical philanthropic support, Regions has taken its traditional role as the charity care leader for the Twin Cities East Metro and added a new role as the destination hospital for all residents. More people than ever are saying “Take me to Regions,” and we continue to win national honors for neurosurgery, stroke and heart care and much more. As hospitals are increasingly affected by cuts to government funding, Regions can be a model for providing excellent care at an affordable cost. Charitable contributions have played an important role in this success, paying for services and facilities that normal hospital revenue cannot cover. By February 2013, $5 million had been raised to help Regions build a new mental health facility with new programming and a campaign to fight the stigma associated with mental illnesses. The 23rd Annual Wine Auction was a great success, raising $709,000 to create a new Parkinson’s and Neurological Movement Disorders Center. Our cancer services have been another big recipient of charitable support; our Patricia D. Lundborg Cancer Library and cancer survivorship program would not exist without the generosity of friends like you. These are just a few examples; one cannot visit Regions without benefiting from the support of donations.

Make no mistake, the next few years will be challenging ones for safety-net hospitals like Regions. Cuts to state funding should lead to more than $14 million in losses for Regions in 2013 alone, and cuts to federal programs that serve vulnerable populations will disproportionately affect safety-net facilities.

Our need for charitable assistance is growing, but so is the support of our community. We are fortunate to have partners like you who care so deeply about health care and are willing to give so generously. Thank you for your support.

IMPROVING PATIENT EXPERIENCE New mental health facility leads to more dignified, effective care

T

he experience of patients in a mental health facility—the way they interact with staff, fellow patients and the environment—can be just as important as therapy and medications in helping them heal. But too often the facilities themselves lead to a poor experience.

(Left to right) Tim Keenan; Gretchen Prohofsky, MOT, OTR/L; Gayle Godfrey, MS, RN; and Nneka Morgan in the new mental health facility. Keenan and Morgan are on Regions Hospital Foundation’s mental health campaign committee and are both donors to the campaign. Prohofsky is the allied nurse manager in Regions Mental Health; Godfrey is a nurse manager.

“There is a real fear among many patients about going to certain mental health facilities,” said Gayle Godfrey, a mental health nurse manager at Regions. “If a patient is fearful when they are in the hospital, they won’t get better as soon. I went into this field to help people improve their lives, but the way mental health care is offered isn’t always so dignified.”

Gretchen Prohofsky agrees. Prohofsky is the allied health manager in Regions Mental Health. “Patients experiencing a mental illness deserve the same highquality facilities as those with cancer or heart disease. Poor facilities further stigmatize mental illness, and the stereotypes keep patients from seeking help.”

That’s why Regions built a new mental health facility that opened in December 2012. There are many features of the eight-story facility that inspire Godfrey and Prohofsky in their care of patients and families. •

he Regions mental health facility is the only T one in the Twin Cities with all private rooms and baths. “Our patients deserve their own rooms and showers. A room should be a place for privacy and healing, somewhere you can get a good night of sleep rather than suffering through other people’s sleeping habits,” Prohofsky said.

Our outdoor space is very unique among mental health hospitals. Without it, some patients can go months without getting any fresh air at all,” Godfrey said. ach floor has its own kitchen and dining area. E “Patients can share meals and life experiences, and the kitchen allows us to teach patients how to cook their own nutritious food,” Prohofsky said. he nurse’s stations are open to promote T interaction with patients. “It takes away the ‘us versus them’ atmosphere of other facilities,” Godfrey said.

omfort rooms on each unit help calm patients C in times of distress. “Each comfort room has soothing rockers and DVDs, nature-based wall murals and sensory-based materials such as weighted blankets to calm patients. There’s less pressure because they don’t have to remember everything,” Prohofsky said. Finally, staff members will help patients prepare for the ongoing care and services they will need once they leave the facility.

atural light is incorporated liberally in the N design of each floor. “Natural light is effective in treating patients with mental illness, particularly those with depression and bipolar disorder,” Godfrey said.

“While creating Circle of Support, we have reviewed every decision with our mental health patient and family advisory council,” Godfrey said. “The combination of evidence-based care and feedback from patients and family members has made Circle of Support a unique roadmap for best care.”

The experience of patients and their family members has also been highlighted in Circle of Support, Regions’ new model for treating patients experiencing a mental illness. Patients will feel more supported during their treatment. They will be more involved in creating their own treatment plans and have more therapies to choose from. With the permission of

KRAUS-ANDERSON PARTNERS IN CREATION OF FACILITY, FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN On December 7, 2012, Regions hosted the grand opening of its new mental health building, which includes 100 private rooms and baths, more than twice the floor space of its former facility and room for future expansion. The building represents the largest private investment in mental health in the state’s history. Kraus-Anderson Construction Company was involved in all phases of the project—from its planning and design to its construction—and is a major reason the facility was completed early and under budget. “The Regions mental health building ushers in a new era in the treatment and understanding of mental illness,” said Mark Coudron, senior vice president of Kraus-Anderson. “Mental health care had taken a back seat in our community, so Regions deserves credit for once again taking the lead and forging ahead on the project.”

PREVENTING INJURIES HEAT program educates people on the dangers of fire

A

fter 26 years as an Inver Grove Heights firefighter, “rarely a day goes by that I don’t ask myself, ‘Why did this happen?’” said Dan Bernardy. “We find our motivation in the faces of those we served who did not know how to protect themselves.”

A few key HEAT program partners gather in the Burn Center at Regions Hospital (from left to right): Smokey Bear; Dan Johnson, executive director of MN FAIR Plan; Bill Mohr, MD, co-director of the Burn Center; and Dan Bernardy, a firefighter and program consultant.

That is why Dan and his company, TCB Consulting, have worked with the Burn Center at Regions Hospital to create the Healing, Education and Training (HEAT) program. The HEAT program educates people of all ages on the dangers of fire, teaching them to take a personal responsibility for themselves, their families, their homes and their surroundings. It does this by personally intervening with youth firesetters and their families, creating a unique mix of multimedia education, and forging strong relationships with national organizations. For the past four years, the program has been funded through generous contributions from the MN FAIR Plan.

MD, a HealthPartners physician and co-director of the Burn Center, “from little kids pulling cords attached to coffee pots and scalding themselves, to tripping into campfires that they can’t escape from, to lighting pieces of paper out of curiosity and catching their clothes on fire.”

The Burn Center at Regions, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2013, is the most complete and extensive care facility of its kind in the Upper Midwest, providing specialized care for all types of burns and wounds. “As an authority on these injuries, we are passionate about using every avenue to reach those at risk,” Dr. Mohr said.

The HEAT program’s main target population is potential youth firesetters. Fires started by children’s play account for an average of 56,000 fires each year in the U.S. From 2005 through 2009 such fires led to 110 deaths, 880 injuries and $286 million in direct property damage. According to the United States Fire Administration, the majority of youth fire setting is done by children younger than 10 years old, and without proper intervention, the fire setting behavior will likely continue.

The HEAT program works on many fronts to prevent firesetting behaviors. For example: •

“We see a whole range of heartbreaking child injuries that result from unsafe behaviors,” said Bill Mohr, REGIONS HOSPITAL FOUNDATION

he HEAT program has partnered with the U.S. T Forest Service and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in an effort to prevent campfire injuries. As part of this effort, the DNR distributed more than 100,000 fire and burn prevention activity books at state parks and provided funding for a billboard campaign. The U.S. Forest Service allowed the program to use the figure of Smokey Bear, a very well-protected icon.

Dan takes a lot of satisfaction from the HEAT team’s work in helping prevent injuries due to preventable fires, but his greatest joy comes from seeing that moment of comprehension in the faces of children he talks to, “that ‘tada’ moment when you see the light come on in their eyes and you know they have embraced the message. Anyone can get the right answer on a fire safety quiz, but to embrace an attitude toward safety is the first step toward behavioral change and a safer future.”

he HEAT program has worked with local and T regional mental health, juvenile justice, fire service and other organizations to provide educational resources to families.

MINNESOTA RURAL ELECTRIC ASSOCIATION CONTRIBUTES TO BURN CENTER RENOVATION For the seventh year in a row, the Burn Center at Regions Hospital received proceeds from the Annual Minnesota Rural Electric Association (MREA) Burn Center Benefit Golf Tournament. “Among our member cooperatives, we have a goal of zero accidents, and our loss control specialists are constantly training our co-ops on safety matters. But we need to make sure our communities have proper treatment facilities in case a worker is burned,” said Shari Wormwood, an MREA communications specialist. “With proceeds from our golf tournament, we help ensure that our workers and their families receive the best care possible.” Julie Jelen (left), senior loss control coordinator with the MREA, and Shari Wormwood (right), MREA communications specialist, present a check to Candyce Kuehn, RN, nurse manager of the Burn Center at Regions Hospital.

Shari toured the Regions Burn Center where she received information about the unit’s current renovations. With help from charitable contributions, the renovation will provide patients and visitors with a more welcoming, healing and positive environment. The project includes improvements to two children’s play areas, two waiting rooms, a family consultation room and a conference room along with the addition of artwork and hallway murals.

that make patients and visitors more comfortable, such as an outdoor garden and short stay rooms for the families of patients who live out of town. “Burn care is often longterm and can be very costly, so the MREA is very happy to contribute event proceeds to the Burn Center.”

COORDINATING THE BEST CARE Nurse receives comprehensive treatment for tumor

I

n April 2011, Elaine Nelson had a pituitary tumor removed at Regions Hospital. Elaine is a clinical nurse specialist and knew the seriousness of her condition. “The tumor was large and bled easily,” Elaine said. “It could have been terrible but everything came out great,” thanks to the comprehensive, coordinated care offered by Regions and HealthPartners.

procedure was performed,” Elaine said. “The different HealthPartners specialists worked together extremely well, and everyone was so nice to me.”

The pituitary gland sits at the base of the brain, directly behind the eyes. As a pituitary tumor grows it can compress nearby nerves, resulting in vision problems. At first, Elaine’s ophthalmologist thought her problems with side vision were the result of her cataracts. However, after she had lens-replacement surgery her vision did not improve.

Since her surgery, Elaine has seen a HealthPartners endocrinologist on a regular basis to tweak the hormone levels in her system. (The pituitary gland is one of the main endocrine glands, which regulate the production of hormones.) Her HealthPartners primary care physician is kept apprised of Elaine’s status and follows up with her to ensure that all potential health concerns have been addressed.

The afternoon following her post-operative eye appointment, Elaine received a series of diagnostic procedures, including an MRI at Regions. That night she received a call from Cheryl Sarno, a nurse clinician within the Regions Neuroscience Department. “Cheryl told me about the tumor and said they wanted to do surgery as soon as possible,” Elaine said.

The next day, Elaine visited Regions to consult with HealthPartners physicians Alejandro Mendez, MD, a neurosurgeon, and Dave Hamlar, MD, an otolaryngologist and skull base surgeon. Three days later Elaine was in surgery to remove the tumor, and when she woke up her vision was normal. “I’ve never had a medical procedure move that smoothly and quickly before, from the moment I came to the doctor with symptoms to the moment a REGIONS HOSPITAL FOUNDATION

“Our coordination of care is unique,” Sarno said. “HealthPartners is structured well to handle challenging medical issues, offering a medical group, hospital care and medical plan to members of our community. This allows us to offer care that is both comprehensive and seamless, from the first visit with a primary care physician through surgery and beyond.” As a result, Regions and HealthPartners have received several national awards for the quality of its Neurosciences programs, including a HealthGrades Neurosciences Excellence Award in 2012. (HealthGrades is a leading independent healthcare ratings company.) 2012 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

“I’ve never had a medical procedure move that smoothly and quickly before, from the moment I came to the doctor with symptoms to the moment a procedure was performed.” – Elaine Nelson With charitable contributions, Regions and HealthPartners can fund programs that normal revenue cannot cover or push major programs forward years ahead of time in order to meet the immediate needs of the community. Over the past five years, proceeds from Regions Hospital Foundation’s Wine Auction have funded the new Parkinson’s and Neurological Movement Disorders Center, Center for Spine and Spinal Cord Injury, and Center for Dementia and Alzheimer’s Care. Donations also help fund the cutting-edge work of the Alzheimer’s Research Center at Regions Hospital.

Elaine would recommend the care of Regions and HealthPartners to anyone with a neurological issue. “Dr. Mendez was great and his team was a real team. Everyone was so knowledgeable and skilled and took great care of me. I feel blessed at how things turned out. I couldn’t have had a better outcome.”

OLYMPIC MEDALIST KEYNOTES WINE AUCTION The 23rd Annual Wine Auction raised $709,000 to help fund a new Parkinson’s and Neurological Movement Disorder Center. Davis Phinney attended as the event’s special guest. Davis was an inspiration to many as an Olympic bronze medalist and Tour de France stage winner. When he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2000 he became an inspiration to many more, devoting his life to helping others with Parkinson’s live well today. In 2004, he founded the Davis Phinney Foundation to help fulfill this purpose. Davis and his wife, Connie, had this to say about the Wine Auction, which was held in October 2012: “Of the events we attend around the country, this is simply the best.”

Davis Phinney encouraged the 2012 Wine Auction crowd to join him in a recreation of his Tour de France stage victory celebration.

Our Neurosciences Division is a leader in performing cutting-edge procedures such as deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s and in conducting research into new treatments. With the new center, Regions and HealthPartners will provide earlier and more appropriate diagnosis, care

and education to patients and families. The center will also bolster our research program. “The extraordinary plans for the new center will specifically help those in need while also serving the greater Movement Disorders community by raising the bar for standard of care,” said Davis.

HARNESSING EMPLOYEE PASSION Staff campaign raises nearly $1 million

I

“ ’ve traveled around the world and can’t imagine a better place to live,” said Tom Kottke, MD, a HealthPartners cardiologist. “If I can give back to the community and make it a little better, that gift will multiply itself.” Dr. Kottke and Jawali Jaranilla, MD, are physician leaders of the Sharing at Work employee giving campaign of Regions and HealthPartners. In 2012, employees contributed over $480,000 to the campaign to benefit patient care, medical research and the education of health professionals throughout the organization. With a HealthPartners match, the campaign raised nearly $1 million.

Jawali Jaranilla, MD (left) and Tom Kottke, MD (right) with a patient ceiling lift, paid for with donations to the Sharing at Work employee giving campaign.

Drs. Kottke and Jaranilla are excited by many of the programs funded by Sharing at Work. Both mention the assistance provided to patients in need. “With the help of donations, we can give bathroom scales to needy patients with heart disease,” Dr. Kottke said. “One of the most important things heart failure patients can do to avoid re-hospitalization is to weigh themselves daily. Weighing themselves on a regular basis alerts them to that initial weight gain that can lead to hospitalization. We can also give pillboxes to patients, which helps them keep track of their many medications. It’s not a lot of money, but if you’re broke it can be invaluable.”

Part of the success of the campaign stems from a high level of employee satisfaction, Dr. Jaranilla said. Regions and HealthPartners have received recent awards from the Minnesota Hospital Association and the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal for being great places to work. With the help of donations, scholarships are also available for staff members who want to further their education. “Employees feel like the organization takes care of them and gives them a chance for growth,” Dr. Jaranilla said.

The unique nature of HealthPartners allows for a diverse range of fundable programming that touches every aspect of health care. “HealthPartners provides the full continuum of health care delivery services and has a successful research and education institute. Local physician residents see HealthPartners as the crown jewel of their training program because of the diverse experience they receive,” Dr. Kottke said. REGIONS HOSPITAL FOUNDATION

Both doctors are also involved in the organization’s medical research program. At the moment, they are jointly investigating a potential link between cholesterol levels and the high levels of diabetes among foreign-born populations. “HealthPartners and Regions are uniquely qualified to do medical research,” Dr. Kottke said. “We have large numbers of patients, electronic data sets that are easy to work 2012 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

However, despite the availability of the over-the-counter medication, no study had established the average concentration of the drug in a person’s system when used according to manufacturer’s recommendations. Therefore, prosecutors could not determine what concentration signaled an overdose. A recent study by Mary Carr, MD, a HealthPartners emergency medicine physician at Regions, has changed that. Using donations from the Sharing at Work employee giving campaign of Regions and HealthPartners, volunteers received two drops of Visine in their eyes at regular intervals over a 12-hour period. A NOTE ABOUT 2012 DONATIONS Looking at our fundraising totals alone, Regions Hospital Foundation had a great year thanks to generous donors like you. But as our partner you want more than healthy giving totals. According to a November 2010 study sponsored by Bank of America Merrill Lynch, 72 percent of high net worth households are motivated to give to nonprofits that make an efficient use of gifts. In 2012 our administrative expenses totaled $XXX while funds raised equaled $7,891,916. For every dollar spent on administration, we earned $XXX, which is in the top XXth percentile of comparable institutions, according to benchmarking data provided by The Advisory Board. Our cost to raise a dollar was $XX, which compares to $0.23 in 2011. Our return on investment (ROI) increased significantly from 2011 to 2012, due in part to the support of our mental health campaign. As we complete our mental health fundraising in 2013 and develop our five-year fundraising plan, which will be implemented in 2014, our ROI may decrease slightly, but our fundraising trends, including a diversifying donor base led by significant increases in major gifts over the last two years, speaks well for sustained fundraising strength in the future. We also continue to work closely with hospital leadership in order to forge a stronger link between our programmatic priorities and the passions of our donors. In this way we can continue to ensure an efficient and effective use of your investments. Thank you for trusting us with your gifts.

Members of Jesse Ryan’s family attended the mental health facility’s grand opening. From left to right: Kate Mitchell, Claire Hennessey, Ada Torrey, Erin Hennessey, Molly Torrey, Dan Torrey, Cindy Ryan, Dave Ryan, and Cal Ryan. Jesse’s brother Cal spoke at the event.

Parents memorialize son through gift to mental health campaign Jesse Ryan stayed in Regions Hospital’s former mental health facility several times during his lifetime. No regular rooms were available the first time he was admitted, so staff members wheeled a bed and television into a conference room. “We could see how much the facility was lacking, though the staff’s care was great,” said Dave Ryan, Jesse’s father. Jesse stayed in several different mental health hospitals, and according to the Ryans, Regions was not alone in having substandard facilities. When Jesse died in August 2012 at the age of 33, his parents asked that donations be directed to Regions Hospital Foundation’s mental health campaign. The Ryans like many aspects of the new mental health facility, including the all private rooms and the secure front porch for fresh air. The Ryans especially like the campaign’s goal to fight stigma. “Jesse was a big, happy Irish guy,” Dave said. “He probably wouldn’t be thrilled to be the public face of mental illness. Then again, maybe he’d feel good that his life inspired others.”

Using the IRA charitable rollover will allow donors to make an impact on Regions Hospital while saving money on taxes and decreasing their taxable estates.

GIVE A GIFT FROM YOUR IRA AND SAVE MONEY ON TAXES Great news: The IRA charitable rollover is back. If you are 70½ years or older, federal legislation allows you to make cash gifts totaling up to $100,000 a year from your individual retirement account (IRA) to qualified charities like Regions Hospital Foundation without incurring income taxes on the withdrawal. The provision is only effective through 2013, so you must act by December 31. Such a gift has several advantages: • Gifts count toward satisfying your annual minimum required distribution • Besides decreasing your federal taxes, the gift decreases your taxable estat Consult your legal or tax advisors before making a decision based on this information. There are many ways to give to Regions Hospital Foundation. To find out more, please call us at 651-254-2376 or visit our Giving Options website at www.RegionsHospital.com/giftplanning.
