TO CLARITY - TYPOGRAPHY 2 2018
PROCESS
RESEARCH
As I began to think about my calendar, I looked to other events calendars for inspiration. Did they use the artist imagery as a primary source of visual intrigue? Type? Texture? What was the hierarchy within sucessful calendars?
RESEARCH
I also took note of what the Sam Fox events directors said would be important to highlight and include in the poster such as... 1. Month Name 2. Hierarchy 3. The Sam Fox logo and or the Wash U logo 4. The Public Lecture Series 5. Do not need to include all the images
DISCOVERY
As I started to delve further into my project, I began by considering the hierarchy of the type on my calendar. What would be most important aspects of each event? How would I highlight them over others. I experimented with bolding, italicizing, and more. I also began to consider which typefaces I would want to use. I made multiple series of type specimen throughout my process. I considered the openess of the typeface, whether it was serif or sans serif, and the range of styles.
I loved experimenting with numbers (a designers dream)!

In my early calendar attempts, I tried out a serif option, but quickly decided to veer away from this choice. I began to further explore my serif type specimen. I eventually discovered Benton Sans and decided to use it throughout my poster. I loved the variety of styles in this type face and thought it was so flexible: from body text to numbers to display text.

DISCOVERY
/ FALL 2018 I grew intrigued with the idea of a block of text for the calendar. I thought that this would allow me to convey hierarchy and maybe even create some sort of visual brand for the calendar.

DISCOVERY
/ FALL 2018
I experimented with how this block of text would affect the overall composition of my calendar. It affected the layout of my calendar, the poster side, the textures I would use, and the layout of my images.
REFINEMENT
As I refined my calendar, I began to reconsider my color choice. In the beginning of my process, I was leaning more towards a red and black color scheme. However, when I started to consider the color of my images and the rest of my calendar, I started to experiment with green.
REFINEMENT
In addition to evolving into a green color scheme, I also considered my choice of imagery. I decided to replace the Sam Fox image I used in the background of my poster side with an image from the public lecture series. This added more meaning to my calendar while also complementing the artist’s work. As my poster evolved, so did the block of text. I refined it meticulously to make sure that all aspects were evenly spaced and aligned for the optimal visual effect.
REFINEMENT
I also refined spacing of text within my calendar as well as the weight of each aspect of the event, and introduced a secondary color.

CRITICISM
The criticism I received from my classmates and faculty was very helpful. One point of criticism was to include full color images rather than black and white or duotone images. While I’ll admit that I was very hesitant about this at first, in the end, it added a level of depth and richness to my calendar. It also allowed me to more fully showcase the work of the Public Lecture Series speakers. I was also advised to include some of these images on the poster side of my calendar. This once again, yielded the same effective results. I also played around with the opacity and vibrance of the background image to accomodate the front images. I was also advised to consider aspects such as the names of the speakers and including captions for the images I used. This enhanced the clarity and overall message of my calendar. The criticism I received also helped me enhance the hierarchy of my calendar.
