ARIEL FLORES ARCHITECTUR AL + DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2017 - 2021
Ariel Flores +61 431 865 429 arieljulianflores@gmail.com linkedin.com/in/arieljulianflores
ABOUT ME I respectfully acknowledge the Wurundjeri people who are the Traditional Custodians of this land on which I am pursuing my career. I would also like to pay respect to their Elders past, present and emerging. The challenges and growth I’m seeking in my career as a graduate is apparent, Through my studies and professional experience so far, I constantly see the future of the practice needs for innovation and in addition, an adaptable mindshift for generations to come. My approach when it comes to most things stems from my understanding and passion for discovering the human mind and psychoanalysis in both mental and physical states. This extrapolates in architecture and how it informs the brain from external and internal influences. I believe this ties back into many socio-cultural ethics in the world today and that it’s a collective effort to ensure this substance of thinking exists in design. As a dedicated professional, designer and CAD technician with four years in the Construction and Built Industry looking to grow as a Graduate Architect. Currently pursuing registration and seeking to develop my career and skill set for further endeavors. My drive for knowledge and learning makes me a resilient individual, invested in growing collaboratively. Known for my resourcefulness and optimism, I aim to contribute and be a part of the change in an openminded community. My passion and integrity will become evident as an integral asset, should the opportunity arise. Curating design to produce healthier spatial experiences enables longevity in both the environment and our well-being, which I’m committed to work through the span of my architecture career.
“The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect, but by the play of instinct.” - Carl Yung

01 600 Collins Melbourne, Victoria 600 Collins is a mixed-use tower, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects in collaboration with Plus, will become a landmark, not just in Melbourne but also in Australia. This retail, office and residential project, a first for Zaha Hadid Architects in Australia, will add an important new layer to the city’s urban fabric. This joint venture has brought together different yet complementary skills and experiences for this unique project. The arrangement of the tower takes its inspiration from its mixeduse programme, converting the building’s overall volume into a series of smaller stacked ‘vases’. Each vase houses a different programmatic element. At the junctions between each vase, easily accessible communal spaces are created offering the public and residents a new way to experience the city.

05 Cronin Residences Gold Coast, Queensland Two tower residential offering, inspired by the resort style of the Palm Springs, USA and Calile Hotel, Brisbane, AU. Draws it’s approach of timeless and sophisticated design of a building to feel light and open. This was done by maximising the views to the Ocean, Broadwater and Gold Coast Hinterland. The considerations of this project was Queensland’s suptropical climate in junction with the the cost and complexity of practical design implcations. An immediate context analysis was gathered to inform the site surroundings and limitations followed by an extensive view height analysis to tailor and curate views to the aformentioned ocean, waters and hinterlands. An iterative process aided this process for the floorplans and and a modular design gave practicality to the facade appearance and experience.

06 The Marker West Melbourne, Victoria The Marker takes a significant step forward in the evolution of West Melbourne. A statement of quality, liveability and scale, to shape the urban fabric of an historic neighbourhood. The first edition, Stanley & Spencer, is perfectly positioned to take advantage of a landmark location with design that exemplifies a more advanced approach to modern living. Distinct architecture is a rarity of proportion and detail, delivering spaces that are personal, adaptive and entirely sophisticated, with comfort at their core. On the edge of the city and bordering a tranquil, tree-lined neighbourhood, the precinct is transforming into a leafy residential borough, with its industrial heritage reimagined for a growing community of urban dwellers. Surrounded by a privilege of Melbourne’s favourite parks and gardens, the area exudes an unmistakable village vibe. Connectivity is immediate with a tram stop at your door to transport you into the heart of the city, North Melbourne and the Docklands in mere minutes.

07 Coburg Quarter Coburg, Victoria Nestled in a unique and notable location amongst the bluestone walls of the former HM Pentridge Prison, Coburg Quarter draws twin inspiration from the tall stone walls of the prison and the tradition of walled villages seen through the Italian countryside. These aspects are reinterpreted in a contemporary context to foster a new sense of urban community and solidarity for residents of the central Coburg village. The row of reclaimed brick apartments along the boulevard unifies the three separate buildings, creating a ‘village wall’. A break in this continuous wall distinguishes a laneway familiar to Melbournians as pedestrians enter to Coburg Quarter, extending the boulevard to the site’s central ‘village square’ and beyond.

08 Golf Road Oakleigh South, Victoria Oakleigh South Townhouses, proposed to make a significant contribution to the public realm and surrounding neighbourhood. A high quality, Contemporary architectural expression with sensitivity to its context will be the driving force behind the design. Importance has been placed on sincere engagement of the surrounding community by providing public ‘pocket’ parks and veggie gardens for community enjoyment. The project is designed to encourage pedestrian movement through the site, giving a strong connection to the surrounding street network.

09 Avalon Masterplan Avalon, Victoria Framed by farmland, Avalon airport, rural residential and the ocean, The masterplan considers the social and placemaking aspects that fosters a healthy creative community. It achieves that by creating a sequence of generous open green spaces and mixed-use town centres that attract a critical mass of users and activities. Connectivity is key to the design of the precinct- within the site as well as providing opportunity to link to planned future infrastructure. The site is an amalgamation of three lots with Avalon road defining the western edge whilst Dandos Rd has Lot A to the north and Lots B and C to south. The design has a unifying element by establishing a strong northsouth link across the site and east-west connector roads for ease of way finding. The streets are tree lined to generate a pleasant microclimate and connect the site with the existing green open spaces. The creation of green corridors and park areas provide better working environments and support onsite biodiversity regeneration. This sensitive human focused approach to the green linkages across the site sets a new benchmark for industrial developments. Time:

10 Resonance Hiroshima, Japan With the future in such a state of uncertainty and political relationships more strained than ever, there is one more silent threat that could end up being more deadly and dangerous to humanity than a hundred pandemics: nuclear weapons. Extrapolating the brief into what architecture can cultivate, not only for immediate remembrance but for enduring recollections of collective memory. A memorial that depicts world history for current and future generations to come. Situated in Hiroshima, the place the world witnessed the first nuclear bomb of to strike caused immense devastation. While existing memorials are in place, the detachment to history and becomings will inevitably be lost, the architecture aims to restore and refresh the minds of of a time where Hiroshima and the country underwent through a truly horrific period and the stories of recovery, and growth of how Japan has made it self what it is today. This is “The Last Nuclear Bomb Memorial”

11 Kaizen Village Melbourne, Victoria Kaizen Village is an attempt to bridge the gap of homeownership where previous shared-system housing provides questionable permanency, and eludes the fading international dream. The collective idea of owning a home is prevalent but no longer possible for millennials wanting to make this idea a reality. Through affordable homes and a living community with the support of Kaizen (“change for better”) rationality, it is a platform that can provide for individuals who are willing to make a difference and understand the expectations out of the work they are willing to put into it. This village accommodates the ‘self-made millennials ’ into a stable environment they can trust and rely to keep them in alignment with their future they have set for themselves. With Japanese spatial aspects and personalisation design elements in mind it is possible to create a village that both accommodates the needs of an individual personally and socially. Structured with modularity and customisation, it provides it’s residents and users the flexibility to adapt within this mode of living, also for the eventual changing needs of future generations that will benefit from the reactive variability of the housing market.

12 Incremental Baguio Baguio, Benguet Province, Philippines This thesis challenges the issues relating to incremental housing and cultural appropriability. It responds by manipulating standardised building systems. The result is aimed to provide an alternative form using modular processes and Elemental’s strategy of resident managed improvements; one that better appreciates the cultural diversity and looking to reveal strategies in designs located in Baguio, Philippines. Using examples of the existing locale to provide expectations of future outcomes; can iterate anticipated modular designs that accommodate the residents’ changing needs, which ultimately functions as a resilient system to endure the current and future generations to come.

13 Project Eden Melbourne, Victoria How we respond to this endemic of heat and the dangers of Urban Heat Island effect. When disaster hits Melbourne in 2077, we know temperatures in the CBD will soar to 70 degrees Celsius and that additional 6214 deaths will occur every 3 days, for however long the heatwave will last. Current trajectories show it will last at least 7 days, which would lead to more than double the number of deaths by heat exposure alone. Due to UHI, most of the heat would be radiating the closer you are to the ground. To reduce the effect of heat on users whilst prioritising health and comfort first and foremost, we propose the following to live on a ‘new vertical plane’. Project Eden attempts to resolve components that exponentially add to thermal fluctuation disasters. In by doing so this infrastructure enables the inclusion of future airspace accommodating the needs of thermal heat and responding to other seasonal changes.

Extreme temperatures above 70°C, Dependencies on all airspace levels replace ground services. Level 04 alleviates airspace congestion and provides additional airway for CBD function and transportation modes.
Severe temperatures of +60°C, increase in human mortality, incur malfunction of transport and cooling services. Level 03 relieves congestion and enables further resources into the city
Temperatures above 55°C increase high risk mortality, ground transportation begins to malfunction requiring additional functioning airspace. Level 02 controls priority of Gamma Capsules movments and surrounding VTOL.
Fluctuation in human health. Level 01 enables access to continue functioning city towers, health services and transport. Alpha & Beta Systems initiate cooling and transport operations, Gamma Capsules begin relocation to Eden Towers.
