影展的話 Words from TIDF For the 9th Taiwan International Documentary Festival (TIDF), year 2014 proves to be an important turning point. As result of the new policy, the TIDF, a biennial in the past years will now be held annually from this year onwards. Moreover, a permanent TIDF office is set up under Taiwan Film Institute, and this provides the TIDF with a stable foundation and resource. These changes reflect a time in which we re-consider the role of the TIDF.

再見.真實 Let's Re-encounter Reality! 2014,對第九屆台灣國際紀錄片影展(TIDF)來說,是一個重要的轉折年。影展從過去 兩年一次的「紀錄片雙年展」改為每年舉辦,並在「國家電影中心」下成立常設辦公室,

One of the differences brought in is that starting from this edition, filmmakers' independent views and innovative spirit will be on the centre stage at the TIDF. Based on our core belief in documentary - "re-encounter reality" and in order to encourage the development in Asian and Chinese-language documentary, we have newly established Asian Vision Competition and Chinese Documentary Awards. We hope that the TIDF is the international film festival in Asia as well as the Asian film festival on the international stage.

有更穩固的根基和資源。這些變革,是重新思考與定位 TIDF 的契機。 自此屆起,TIDF 將強調獨立觀點與創作精神,著重於鼓勵亞洲與華語紀錄片的發展,新 增「亞洲視野競賽」與「華人紀錄片獎」,並以「再見 ‧ 真實」作為影展的核心哲學。 是亞洲的國際影展,也是國際的亞洲影展。 「再見」,意味著有充分理解過去的機會,並能與之告別,然後擁有新的眼光,再次見 到紀錄片的核心精神――「真實」,引發更多開放性的討論與想像;因而,在節目與 活動的策劃上,嘗試讓單元與單元之間產生對話,並有深入細談的交流機會,不只涵蓋 「舊」與「新」、「經典」與「前衛」,也包括「熟悉」與「陌生」:要爬梳過去,也 希望創造歷史。 2014,對台灣也絕對是重要的一年,各種政治事件、社會運動與災難意外頻傳,似乎都 隱隱暗示著,台灣正在經歷一種前所未有的震盪與過渡。作為影展,TIDF 期待世界各地 聚集而來的影片們,那些關於人與社會、環境、歷史、文化的各個切面,能成為我們觀 看世界的鏡窗,觀省自身的觸媒。 若我們從這些影片中,看見或感受到了什麼,或許,那也正反映出這一年來,我們共同 的感受與心情。

TIDF 台灣國際紀錄片影展

The term, "re-encounter", means an opportunity for us to understand the past, and to bid a proper farewell to it before developing a new vision for the future. To "reencounter" the core value of documentary - "reality" is bound to provoke more open discussion and imagination. Therefore when we were planning the programmes and events, we tried to make each category resonate and interact with one another; these films cover both the "new" and the "old"; the "classic" and the "modern"; the "familiar" and the "strange". They help us not only comb through our past but also create a new chapter in history. 2014 is undoubtedly a very challenging year for us in Taiwan. In the past months, we have had a series of social movements and political incidents as well as disasters, both man-made and natural. It seems to imply that Taiwan is currently experiencing a new shockwave and a transition. As a film festival, the TIDF expects that those social, environmental, historical and cultural aspects of life shown in the films coming from different places would become the window through which we see the world and the inspiration for us to reflect upon ourselves. If we see or feel something in these films, maybe, it simply conveys what we all felt throughout the year.

艾倫.柏林納是今年台灣國際紀錄片影展的焦點導演,除了放映他的 九部作品,更邀請他本人來台舉辦「大師講堂」,分享他的創作歷程。 在大師講堂中,艾倫將從他 30 多年來的紀錄片創作生涯談起,帶領 我們認識聲音、影像、主題及敘事策略等各種元素的可能性。他將以 自己的影片為例,分享以「自我」作為創作題材時可能帶來的風險與 益處,並深談他為何窮畢生之力,追探關於個人、家庭、不同文化面 向的身分認同、記憶、衰老、愛、家庭關係和人類的脆弱等議題。 同時,他也將聚焦在「剪輯過程」的講解, 說明自己的作品片段,是 如何以編排、拼貼、對位的方式,結合廣大的個人性、詩意、歷史性、 檔案影像及音樂素材,創造出令人驚嘆的影音蒙太奇。 對他而言,說故事的方法,有時也和故事本身一樣迷人。 ※ 座位有限,請預約報名:www.tidf.org.tw。現場如有空位,將開放排隊入場。

October 18th 13:30-16:30 Venue: The Foyer, Huashan Creative Park (Add: No. 1, Sec. 1, Bade Road) Featuring this year in the 9th TIDF is American documentary filmmaker Alan BERLINER, whose nine renowned works will be seen in this year's programme. Not only will he be around the audience for his screenings, he will also teach a master class, sharing his filmmaking journey. Alan BERLINER will take us on a guided tour through the sounds, images, themes, and storytelling strategies that have helped define his filmmaking career for more than three decades. By showing examples from his films, BERLINER will help us understand both the risks and rewards of using one's own life as a "living laboratory", and how and why he's devoted his life to exploring the personal, familial, and cultural dimensions of identity, memory, aging, love, family relationships, and the fragility of the human condition. The master class will also focus on the process of editing, using clips from his films to illustrate how he creates compellingly dynamic montages from the compilation, collage, and counterpoint of a wide variety of personal, poetic, historical, archival, and musical sources - and how he creates films in which the way a story is told can be just as interesting as the story he is telling.

成田機場的飛機起起降降,隨著鏡頭,導演帶我們穿越 機場旁的小徑,「空港粉碎」的牌子依舊豎立,而那幾 戶自 1966 年的抗爭運動後堅持不搬離,在這裡幾乎度 過一生的人家,緩緩道出他們的回憶與心情。 1966 年,日本政府在沒有與居民溝通的情況下,決定 要在三里塚地區興建機場。此舉引發農民們奮起反對, 並贏得了學生們與日本各地社運者的支持,就此展開數 年的激烈抗爭,罔顧民主正義的政府與不畏懼國家暴力 的人們,皆付出了沉痛的代價。 45 年過去了,當年拍攝《三里塚之夏》而被捕的攝影 師大津幸四郎,如今回到昔日戰場反思這場運動;片中 穿插了小川「三里塚系列」作品的畫面,也有許多從未 公開的第一手抗爭影像。從當下回首過去,每人對待過 去的態度和政治投入度截然不同,但「信念」在他們心 中未曾消失過。

Director's Statement After forty-five years, I revisited the Sanrizuka airport land. What did I see there and what attracted my attention that prompted me to film? "In the beginning was the Word." In the beginning, everything is brought out into broad daylight to be scrutinised and dissected by words and reason; to be verbalised and hanged out to dry. On the other hand, the world of films is a world of shadows swaying endlessly. The minute you think you caught them; they slip through your fingers. The mesh of words must be too big to verbalise them. They are gone. This film recounts the forty-six years of struggles of the Sanrizuka farmers opposing the new airport and the government's powerful oppression from time to time, through the sober eyes of present day farmers. However imperfect the airport might be, it has been built and it is inevitable to conclude that the farmers lost the struggle. The farmers are still farming in the land while casting side glances at the planes taking off and landing. They continue to live there. Their lives and minds must be wavering in conflicting courses. We quietly placed our camera by their side and made a tranquil document of their monologues.

International Competition

Amsterdam Stories USA is a road movie and mosaic portrayal of the little-known America that follows the migratory flow of the past through 16 North American towns, sites, and populated places, all of them called Amsterdam or New Amsterdam. Each little Amsterdam is a different, unique story that progressively weaves an imaginary map of provincial America.

The films submitted to the 2014 TIDF come from 117 countries and regions. We received 1,102 submissions in this category alone. After a three-month selection process, fifteen documentaries from all over the world are shortlisted in the final. Moreover, the very different and innovative styles of narrative demonstrate the limitless potential of the documentary aesthetics.

父親在 1997 年過世,記憶被封存在家中角落。如今,那棟遺留下 來的家屋即將轉手,母親、導演與弟弟回家清理當時留下來的物 品,回憶與情感一縷縷勾起,就像告別儀式;在第一人稱敘事下, 穿插手繪插畫、家庭影帶、家人珍藏與談話,家的形象與意義躍 然影像之中。她說:「我想以影像捕捉離開前的這一切。」

這部關於血汗無名勞工的故事,在南韓上映後引起舉國關注。「我 彷彿活在一個異世界中,所有人穿著同樣的衣服。我還記得第一 次在生產線上,那些真實生命就像機器一樣地工作著。」從南韓 最大企業「三星」的退職女工這麼說,她們陸續得了罕見的白血 病,從此改變人生,踏上與三星長達七年的漫漫抗爭。

The house is crammed with objects of no great material value. Years after her father's death, the director, her mother and brother clear the family home, once a promise of social advancement and now a place nobody wants to live in. Can memories be shared? What's left of a life when the next generation attaches a different value to its objects?

"It was like I was in a different world. Men and women all wore the same clothes and it looked like a small country. There were a factory, dormitory, even hospital. Just being there was sort of making me feel good. I can recall the first time I was in manufacturing line. Real robots working there." It's a story about nameless people wearing white coat, hat and mask working in a clean room, exposing eyes only.

身為從小移民到賽普勒斯的南斯拉夫移民,女導演以異鄉客視角, 透過五個章節,以如風的節律旁白,理性又抒情地訴說這座地中 海小島的故事,包括屢見不鮮的偷渡客死亡、第三世界的移民文 化、納粹與極右派高漲的排外勢力……首尾相應的窗口影像,意 味攝影機不只旁觀情勢,更介入思索島國的歸屬與認同。

Ukrainian countryside. A carnival-like ceremony, soviet style, obsolete, entertaining. Then, all of a sudden, into the mine, explodes the violence of a prison world. A dive into the bowels of the earth that devours its own children, in the same time she feeds, warms them up, enlightens them all. A party, few balloons, yellow and blue colours, a break in these men's life. Do they really breathe better outside?

Evaporating Borders develops a sweeping visual essay on global restrictive attitudes toward migrating populations. Guided by the filmmaker's curious eye and personal reflections, the film dissects the experience of asylum seekers in Cyprus. Through a series of vignettes, it poetically weaves themes of migration, tolerance, identity and belonging.

Ometepe, the volcano island—Nicaragua. A landscape like a sleeping body. The ancients describe life in two movements: one linear movement, like a walk; and one beat, emerging from the centre. Each man adopts his own particular rhythm at birth and keeps it for all his life. Within the encounter of the volcano's community and the guardians of its memory, a story of a world unfolds.

A station in thick fog and a waiting figure is seen. An astronomer who is looking to the sky. A musician hoping to meet the right woman one day, and a stableman for whom the world has always turned a little too fast. All are driven by their quiet longing to make contact, to not feel alone, to gaze into openness. In the end we have a clear view but remain alone.

The storm is a snow tempest which disorients and confuses people. Guided by the sheepbells of a flock and by the evocations of the lost, this film is a voyage through storms; those of the mountains and winter, those of bodies and souls, those which remind us that which nature has not obtained from our reason, obtaining from our madness.

Shado'man is a cinematic journey undertaken by the filmmaker together with the street boys. The camera becomes a nucleus around which their life unfolds, unlocking a space for previously unshared pains, dreams and aspirations. The film delves into the inner world of each character to reveal the dignity of humans surviving under inhumane conditions.

On the banks of the Ucayali river, in the Peruvian rainforest, three generations of the same family struggle to survive through their handmade production of coal. 一考定生死,對非洲剛果的莘莘學子來說,通過國家考試是擺脫 貧困的唯一出路。偏偏考試將近,一班學生因付不出老師的額外 酬金,被趕出教室,大家只好搬到破屋自力救濟,互當老師,甚 至是求神、祈福、作弊,為考試使出渾身解數。在笑中帶淚的過 程中,學生群像亦反映了當代社會的荒誕與現實。

「平凡、不同、普通、差異、家庭、獨立、死亡、殘疾、告別、幸福、 悲傷……這是我沒能留有的家庭相簿,也是未能拍完的家庭電影。 家人們已經分離八年多了,我好想他們。但彼此的隔閡隨著時間 而加深,我始終沒辦法面對這一切。藉著拍片,我決定展開這一 趟探索之旅。」

歷史榮光已然消逝的貝魯特,街角已成為毒品充斥、宗教教派衝 突不斷的黑色角落。這樣的混亂樣貌,正是黎巴嫩複雜的政治與 社會現況的縮影。在這裡出沒的人們是老大,也是律法,他們護 衛著這街角,但他們也是影響社會安危的不定時炸彈。女導演帶 領紀錄片團隊,試圖理解他們,卻也捲入混亂之中。

"This is my family photo album that I didn't keep and my home video that I'd never taken. All my family members have been separated for eight years. I miss them, but it seems that years' estrangement was so deep that I wasn't able to knock on their doors. So I decided to find and see them under the cloak of making a documentary."

They are a group of marginalised young men known as the "thugs of Al Lija neighbourhood", addicted to drugs and involved in devious activities. They define the features of that chaotic neighbourhood in Beirut, and reveal a mysterious world, which carries within its folds the particular complexities of social and political realities in Lebanon.

緬甸萌韻吉湖畔,傳統神靈信仰是此地居民的精神支柱,漁夫早 晨虔敬祈禱一日豐收,當夜晚聲樂響起,降靈儀式的高潮也成為 自然的一部分。數十年間,當權者來來去去,不變的是底層人民 的飽滿與壯麗,以及鄉村生活的綿密與質樸。 Governments – even decades-old military regimes – may come and go but, like many rural communities in Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), the lives of the villagers of Pyun Su on the banks of Moe Yun Gyi lake are pervaded by deeper traditions – above all the lively cult of the nat.

It came as a shock at the peak of her artist career that HSU Su-Chen died of cancer. She went cross-disciplinarily in a short 14 years of her creative life. From early work such as "Self-Portrait" to "PlantParadise" which collaborated with many people of different expertise lead her to the winning of Taishin Bank Arts Annual Award. This documentary tells the story Sota MASUDA, a young musician who once had a promising career but failed to develop it further. A series of frustrating events led to his suicide. He left a note and a tape that captured the event for director Shingo OTA, one of his friends. OTA uses the footage to piece together the final years of MASUADA's life and imagines what awaited him after death.

當八堂水壩興建時,農民被迫失去了田地,轉而在漢江邊開始有 機耕作,並吸引許多青年加入;2008 年,李明博總統上台後強推 爭議性極高的「四河修復工程」,要將河岸線的肥沃耕地改建自 行車道和公園,引發當地農民憤起抗爭。當小農遇上國家,當有 機農業遇上觀光休憩,這場綠色戰役展露人性的掙扎與矛盾。

遠古時代,人們在高地上發現一個名為「勇氣」的巨石,村中的 孩子若能將「勇氣」舉起,便成年了。1996 年,舉重國手阿富教 練從高雄桃源部落帶著三位布農族少女下山,成立小女子舉重隊。 女孩們來自父母雙亡、單親、隔代教養的家庭,她們的成年試煉 不是舉起巨石,而是如何面對各自的人生考驗。

In 2008, Korean government announced four River Plans including Paldang. The plan in Paldang organic town is to build bike lanes and a public park instead of farms. It causes serious conflicts among the farmers as they decide if they should fight against the government.

1957 年,一批被打成右派的蘭州大學師生,被送到甘肅農村進行 勞動改造。他們在那目睹了大躍進的荒唐和大饑荒餓殍遍野的慘 烈,其中幾個人自發辦了一個地下刊物《星火》,記錄農村的浮 誇、貧困和飢餓,成為大饑荒時期留下的唯一民間思想刊物。這 些人在後來多被處以重刑,有數人在文革時被槍決。

開封龍亭的正南門古稱「午門」,亦稱「午朝門」。因歷史久遠, 午朝門廣場成了不少人心目中的神靈之地。每天都有各色人等在 廣場進行著不同於一般觀光客的活動。他們或走功(敬神修煉)、 或傾訴、或表演,帶著各自的生活背景和故事,在這裡碰撞。午 朝門是他們的精神出口和寄託所在。

Sparks of Fire is the only extant unofficial intellectual periodical from the time of the Great Famine. In the end, 43 people, including the Rightist teachers and students who were connected with the publication, the peasants and the rural cadres who sympathised with them, were arrested and given long prison terms. Among them, three key figures were executed during the Cultural Revolution.

Wuchao Gate is the south gate of Longting Palace in Kaifeng city of China. In front of the Gate is the Wuchao Gate Square, a "Holy Land" for many people. They are engaged in activities that distinguish them from visitors, some worshiping the gods, some praying, and some acting. With different backgrounds and stories, people meet and communicate here. Mahmud Kiani FALAVARJANI is an Iranian film amateur specialising in films featuring trained animals. He works as a truck driver every day but devotes his entire free time to his great passion. When his beloved fox dies, the man becomes depressed and may find consolation in one thing only - finding a similar animal and training it to work on the set of Mahmud's next film. But it is not so easy to catch a fox, not to mention training it.

Yumen combines ghost stories and the "ruin tourism" to form a celluloid psycho-collage of wandering souls, seeking connection to one another and a lost collective history among the frozen remnants of the abandoned oil town of Yumen in China's northwest Gansu Province.

Through Taiwanese Competition, the TIDF expects itself to realise one of its objectives – becoming the most important documentary platform in Taiwan.

In the pre-dawn hours near a temple are the homeless people with nowhere to go and nothing to do. People pass by without seeing them, police cite and release them over and over, politicians make hay out of issues, and poor people keep exploiting other poor people by playing the lottery. Surveillance cameras are everywhere on the streets, coldly recording everything, devoid of emotion.

《邊界移動兩百年》是一部關於印度華人移民的紀錄片。18 世紀 末,華人開始移入印度,歷經兩百年不同政權輪替,直到近年第 一位華人明星躍入寶萊塢,華人的地位、階級開始在種姓制度的 社會邊界移動……本片採集移民者對當地政治、經濟、種族等面 向的態度,溯源印度華人的遷徙史。

This documentary, Civil Disobedience, records the events of civil unrest following the "Red Martial Law" in 2008. It tells the story of the abuses the civilians suffered in the hands of the authorities, of how the state power has rapidly advanced to undermine the civil rights, and it investigates the problems of being educated to be "obedient."

At the end of the 18th century, Chinese started to migrate into India. Over 200 years, they experienced British colonial rule, Indian independence, the Sino-Indian War, and numerous changes of government. Very recently, a Chinese became a star in Bollywood. It came as a shock at the peak of her artist career that HSU Su-Chen died of cancer. She went cross-disciplinarily in a short 14 years of her creative life. From early work such as "Self-Portrait" to "Plant-Paradise" which collaborated with many people of different expertise lead her to the winning of Taishin Bank Arts Annual Award. This film assembles HSU's talks and images of exhibitions held across the world.

In the waters around Kinmen Island, there is a curious creature which has existed for over 200 million years. People in Kinmen have made a living from the sea for over 300 years. They have survived the crossstrait conflicts between Taiwan and Mainland China. But in the era of peace, both now face a critical crisis - the misuse of the coast by commercial development.

They're ordinary men who are trying to join the dangerous and exciting sport, wrestling, to prove that they are still alive and unique in their own way, i.e. in pain. When the enemy attacks, they are not afraid at all. These men risk their lives to provide the audiences with excellent shows. Once they have gone down this path, they not only cannot turn back but have to face it on their own.

Having grown up in the mountains Chiayi, installation artist WANG Wen-chih weaves his memories of mountains and forests into his work. Using natural materials such as bamboo, rattan and wood, WANG creates his art with hands and collective labour. The huge spaces he constructs emit such deep and strong power that surprise and move countless visitors. This film follows WANG on his journey of creation.

依法律規定,收容所的動物只有 12 天等待被主人找回或領養,否 則就會安樂死。極端殘酷的環境讓牠們多半無法撐過這 12 天。影 片以動物的視角,真實記錄流浪狗在收容所的悲傷,整個拍攝到 最後卻開始了救援行動,工作人員邊拍邊找資源幫動物找新家, 希望把「領養,不棄養」的概念,傳遞到社會各個角落。

Taunted in primary school for not being able to speak Mandarin, LIN Jin-xian later became a teacher of the Taiwanese language and a scholar of regional cultural history. But the fate of a substitute teacher is that of a drifter, and his in-depth research in cultural history no longer has practical application. LIN looks back on his life and realises that he is like a stray dog, with an unknown future.

林錦賢小學時因為國語講不好而被欺負,長大後自學成為閩南語 教師,並研究起地方文史。然而,身為兼課教師的宿命是不斷地 漂泊寄宿,他所擅長的地方文史採集也逐漸無用武之地,那些和 老人們歡唱相褒歌的日子都走遠了。驀然回首,林錦賢才發現自 己就像流浪狗一樣,不知道未來在那裡。

An atheist, Iranian filmmaker Mehran TAMADON managed to convince four mullahs, all believers in the Islamic Republic of Iran, to come and stay with him for two days and engage in discussion. In this confined space, daily life is combined with debate, an unremitting demonstration of the problematic issue of how to live together, when each side's understanding of the world is so contrary.

This is a final movie in the rice trilogy that began with Stories from the North and Agrarian Utopia.

In a year of mass protests around the world, Spain is the setting for two general strikes against the government's austerity plans. One takes place on 29 March, and the other on 14 November. When revolution broke out in Libya, Matt joined his friend in the fight against dictator Muammar GADDAFI and filmed the war until he was captured by GADDAFI forces.

Mirror's Quest and his fellow horses of Fukushima survived in the tsunami. Having been exposed to radiation, they are shut away and neglected for months. They're kept alive because they have to play in the annual horse festival with a 1000-year-old tradition. Ironically, the exposure to radiation saves them from being turned into horse meat.

Archive footage from newsreels, documentaries and fiction films illustrates the lasting effects immigration has had on European societies in the past 60 years. Land of Promise imparts a shared sense of loss, sympathising both with immigrants as well as the societies taking them in. Migration brings conflict, but the films looks beyond the question of guilt and lets the extraordinary images speak for themselves.

But nevertheless, memories can be modified and spoken words can be interpreted. As people tend to describe things from their subjective point of view, in what form does the reality exist? Under the banner of "memory", six documentaries based on the interviews are selected in this category, showing us where the montage cut between memories and records would lead the reality to.

1975. In Rome, Claude LANZMANN filmed Benjamin MURMELSTEIN, the last President of the Jewish Council in the Theresienstad. 2012. Claude LANZMANN exhumes these interviews shot in Rome and returned to Theresienstad, a "model ghetto", chosen by Adolf EICHMANN. The Last of the Unjust provides an unprecedented insight into the genesis of the Final Solution.

A documentary turns into a cinematic Revision. Like a puzzle, the film puts together the facts around the death of two men in a field at the German Polish border in 1992. Director Philip SCHEFFNER composes an increasingly disturbing pattern of landscape and memory, witness testimonies, documents and investigations.

He uses a large quantity of recorded images and sound and transforms them into collages and metaphors on the screen. The emphasis on editing creates a montage full of poetic images, fun and imagination. For BERLINER, the way a story is unfolded could be as enchanting as the story itself. He started making short films and installation art in the late 1970s, and finished a number of feature-length documentaries in later years. In his studio stores a huge amount of discarded film footage he collected in the early years, BERLINER sorts it into different categories and turns it into the inspiration for his work.

In Wide Awake, BERLINER once again uses his own life as a laboratory – this time to confront both the anguish of his sleeplessness, and the blessing of extra time that BERLINER uses both metaphor and candid first-person observations to illuminate how an obsessive mind that won't shut down at night leaves him feeling "jet lagged in his own time zone."

Later, he abandoned his family and went off to Japan to pursue his business interest and life-long affair with Japanese culture. Seventeen years after his death, his grandson made a film of his grandfather's life story.

《青年之海》是小川紳介執導的第一部作品。離開岩波電影製作 所之後,小川希望找尋一條不一樣的路。他以函授教育學生的困 境為題,號召幾名社運青年製作獨立紀錄片,並由他們親身演繹 自已的抗爭。不少人更成為之後小川攝製組的核心成員。當時由 於募捐經費不足,他們只能以賣書賣血完成這部作品。 Sea of Youth was OGAWA Shinsuke's first directorial effort. After leaving Iwanami Productions, he struck an unusual path. He gathered young activists to make an independent documentary on the plight of correspondence students, featuring how they plotted their activism. Many of them later became members of Ogawa Productions. Due to the lack of funding, they sold their books and blood to complete the film.

but nevertheless, in the past few decades, we never had the chance to watch his films publicly as well as systematically. In this retrospective, apart those two films made by other directors, we focus on Sanrizuka and Magino Village series in which OGAWA documented the students' movement. The subject matters in these films may be different, but OGAWA had constantly been searching for the most powerful expression to attract the audiences, making them sympathetic towards the protagonists. Therefore when society changes with time, the meaning of cinema changes with it, and this is why OGAWA's works remain so unique and timeless.

After Sea of Youth, the filmmakers turned themselves into a fullyfledged collective - Jieiso, the precursor to Ogawa Productions and created an alternative distribution system. Their next film, Forest of Oppression, turned to the students barricading themselves inside a minor university. Audiences were shocked by the vigour and violence of their protest and the film put OGAWA on the map.

經過《壓制之森》爆炸性的成功,自主放映組織會連同幾個工會 和社運電影人準備下一部電影。在一場場示威者與防暴警察的衝 突中,鏡頭下的小川仔細調查一名示威者的死因。《現認報告書》 是指日本警方日常用的現場調查報告。片名除了是對公權力的嘲 諷外,也代表製作團隊意識到警方正監控他們。

In other words, in addition to the issues raised, OGAWA's films are experimental by nature. His methods, including how he followed the protagonists, investigating, searching for evidence or the way he filmed dancing and performance or the emphasis put on participating, or even becoming the real “filmed subjects" were brave attempts with a romantic touch to innovate documentary. This is also what he called, the source of "the bliss of searching for the ultimate happiness in documentary".

After the explosive success of Forest of Oppression, Jieiso organised their next film with labour unions and political activists/filmmakers. Bristling with scenes of clashing protesters and riot police, OGAWA (who appeared onscreen) carefully investigates the death of a young protester. The original title ironically refers to the daily reports written by police as well as the police surveillance under which the collective now found itself.

《邊田部落》是一部精細雕琢時間和空間的紀錄片,也是小川兩 部經典大師名作的第一部;抗爭在片中退居為一個背景,重心轉 移到發生了少年自殺和村民被警方拘留的邊田部落。這是一部沉 靜、有耐性的電影,片中的 11 個場景多以長鏡頭完成,攝製組希 望呈現的,正是「村莊的時間」。

In 1968, OGAWA formed Ogawa Productions and moved to the construction site of Narita Airport in Sanrizuka. OGAWA chose to live in the most radical village, Heta. The farmers vehemently protested, drawing support of the social movements across Japan. They clashed with riot police sent in to protect the surveyors, who were planning the airport. It's a messy film, but its chaos communicates the passions and actions on the ground.

Heta Village is an extraordinary documentary about time and place, the first of two masterpieces by OGAWA. OGAWA pushes the protests to the far background to concentrate on the village of Heta itself as one of its youth commits suicide and others are detained by police. The film is quiet, patient, and its 11 scenes are mostly rendered in single takes. This astonishing film is their attempt to render the "time of the village".

小川以科學影片中的實證方法,藉由觀察古屋敷村的氣候變遷, 調查了百年一遇的寒流所造成的災害,同時藉村莊的歷史發掘日 本的歷史流變:從古代的海中生物,到二戰帶來的災禍,甚至是 經濟奇蹟所帶來的無聲侵害。就像一位老人所言:「我們以為把 路修好會帶來現代化的進步,但是,這反而令年輕人更想離開。」

After Summer, Ogawa Pro attempted a more epic scale with Winter in Sanrizuka. It was roundly criticised as a failure. In the wake of this criticism, the collective became increasingly militant. They decided to make a quick and dirty report from the front, calling it a "bullet film." They shot this agit-prop film in three days, when 2,500 protestors battled 6,500 police. Even the school had been let out so children could participate in the action.

OGAWA plays with the conventions of the science documentary to investigate the damage inflicted by an unusual cold front, while penetrating deep into village history. In tiny Furuyashiki, he finds the entire history of Japan – from ancient sea creatures through the catastrophe of WWII to the quiet violence of the economic miracle. As an old man says, "We thought the paved road would bring modernity; instead, it made it easier for the young people to leave".

小川首部獲得世界性成功的作品。抗爭的暴力升級,農民也找到 了新策略:構築龐大的堡壘群,以及貫穿他們土地的地道。雖然 警方攻下一座又一座堡壘,小川依然跟隨著示威者前進,一邊準 備戰鬥,一邊和農民閒談,表露出小川攝製組與農民間深厚互信 的關係,以及小川對拍攝對象的尊重。

小川蹲點 13 年的另一經典名作,也是他生前的最後一部作品。揉 合實證與表演,以顯微鏡拍攝稻穀開花,村民和演員一起扮演自己 的祖先,透過牧野村世代傳承的口述物語、舞蹈與演出再現歷史, 其主題仍聚焦在農務、國家暴力、對抗、現代化與村莊的時間。這 些「永恆」主題,對現今日本農村而言,從來都不是「過去的事」。

This was OGAWA's first international success. The violence had escalated and farmers turned to a new tactic: they built large fortresses, and burrowed underground – under their ground. OGAWA followed the course of the protests, as police invade one after the other. Between the action scenes OGAWA chatted with farmers. One can sense the strong relationship the collective had nurtured with the farmers, and the deep respect with which he approached his subjects.

This film combines all the themes of their concern: farming, state violence, resistance, modernisation, and village time. It masterfully mixes the conventions of science films with Griersonian documentary sequences about ghosts and gods, along with fictional sequences featuring cameos such as the butoh founder Tatsumi HIJIKATA and Roman Porno star Junko MIYASHITA. It's a thoughtful meditation on history and the way it is never quite "past" in village Japan.

Her wonderfully idiosyncratic documentary often uses random images from the films to stand for the collective's members, as if they were home movies. She encountered suspicion as a feminist, as a foreigner, and as a filmmaker who chose not to live and dwell with her subjects.

Over 40 years after being arrested in the fields of Sanrizuka, cameraman OTSU Koshiro returns to the battleground to take stock of the movement. He and co-director DAISHIMA Haruhiko encounter many of the stars of OGAWA's Sanrizuka Series, each of whom has a different relationship to the past and to political passion. It is a moving portrait of present-day Sanrizuka.

近年來,China 獨立紀錄片受到官方更多關注,獨立影展更 是接連被禁,創作越趨艱難,但真實不容禁錮,影展不該被 斷電!本單元與北京獨立影像展(栗憲庭電影基金)、中國 獨立影像展、重慶獨立影展、雲之南影展合作,爬梳近 10 年來生猛精采的 China 獨立紀錄片。「敬」是諧音(禁), 也是敬佩與致敬! In recent years, the Chinese independent documentaries have attracted attention from the Chinese authorities. Moreover, the independent film festivals are often banned, or have the power cut off. Collaborating with Beijing Independent Film Festival (Lixianting Film Fund), CHINA Independent Film Festival, Chongqing Independent Film and Video Festival, and Yunnan Multi Cultural Visual Festival, we combed through the Chinese independent documentaries made in the past ten years and selected those in this category. This is a gesture to not only show our admiration but salute the independent filmmaking in China.

2004 年夏天,畫家王永平拍攝首部電影,由他自己和朋友出演自 己的故事。拍片過程彷彿他們過去生活的搬演:在網路上被評為 天才的詩人,現實生活中卻是個看門人;畫家陷於家庭與情人的 糾葛中,很少畫畫;劇組沒錢,拍攝時斷時續,使王永平萬分焦 慮……這些人,在炎夏中繼續著他們的夢遊之旅。 The experience of four artists. They are WANG Yongping, the painter who plans to make a film, LI Wake who does handstands whenever and wherever, in the name of behavioural art, DING Defu the painter who was active in the modern art movement of the 1980s and the web-based poet Bei Bei. The film depicts a monochrome world that traverses life and art, intersecting with China's metamorphosis.

In 1967, the Cultural Revolution devastated China. Chongqing has the most violent struggle in the country and thousands of people died. Numerous youths were persuaded to fight against each other. Timber Gang documents the lives of a group of loggers in Heilongjiang Province, China. It records the most basic state of being and desire of human beings amidst ice and snow, and serves as a document of a disappearing mode of production as well as living in the process of civilisation's progress.

Quarrelling is just like saying "hello" or "thank you" as it happens a lot in our lives. Quarrelling used to be associated with being "uncivilised" or "lowly-born" although we so often hear people quarrel. This film reveals the quarrelling between motorbike riders, on the Internet and the angry expression used by ordinary people in Beijing.

This is a documentary made by the son of a miner, focusing on the lives of the elder generation. In 1955, more than 300 ardent youths from Shanghai came to the Sanlidong Coal Mine, aiming to realise their hopes and dreams of contributing to the Construction of the Great Northwest. Fifty years later, few of them are still alive. This film focuses on the trials and hardships of the survivors.

Shot in Gu Lou District, Najing, Scrape tells the story about how a stall-keeper took back his fruit and cart which were "temporarily distained" by the urban management officers. The case reveals the complicated relationship between the stall-keepers and the urban management officers in China.

In Yueyang, Hunan Province, the Ximao clan, a group of 20-odd individuals form what amounts to a village. The director, both as a member of the community and a filmmaker, intervenes in the archaeological archival work. Referencing the worldview passed down through the daily lives, myths, and traditions of these people, this grand experimental ethnographic documentary attempts a new interpretation.

Since 1996 ZHAO Liang has filmed the "petitioners", who come from all over China to make complaints in Beijing about abuses and injustices committed by the local authorities. Faced with the most brutal intimidation from the local authorities, the complainants who stubbornly continue despite everything find that their hopes are often in vain.

京生出生於母親老郝來京上訪的路上,從此,她陪同母親在京上 訪長達 30 多年。但她們不是個案。導演用了六年的時光,深入北 京城中的上訪村,與一群懷揣狀紙、來自天南海北的上訪人展開 心靈對話,構建出一個鮮為人知,又與全中國的生存息息相關的 真實世界。影片從上訪村的故事開始,說出所有爬行者的命運。

Wearing a long dress, a white-rose-shaped wig and a pair of high heel shoes, she sings in a bar. The stage belongs to her - the gorgeous Madame Bilan de Linphel. The tailor is talkative. He often goes to the city's gay cruising areas, and he said he was born to love men. Indeed, he had met quite a few whom he had loved so deeply. The point is – this chatty tailor is also Madame Bilan de Linphel on the stage.

This is a peculiar work, a bizarre place, a group of bigoted people and a unique vicissitudes of life. MA Li, the director, devoted six years to going deep into the petitioner village, a humble village in Beijing. With a DV, she talks heart to heart with petitioners from all over the country and creates a real world in a limited space, which is rarely known by people yet closely related to our survival.

北京南郊大興,住著一群在垃圾坑邊長大的孩子們。當新興大樓 逐漸蔓延過來,將要吞噬他們風雨飄搖的小屋時,他們也正面臨 升學和成年的人生岔路。面對狹窄而迷茫的未來,這群危巢中的 孩子,開始了他們與宿命的抗爭。 A group of migrant children have grown up next to a rubbish dumpsite in Daxing in the southern suburbs of Beijing. As highrise buildings begin to encroach upon their shanty settlement and threaten to swallow up their makeshift hut, the children are faced with a predicament. Should they continue their studies or submit to the early onset of adulthood?

After many years, my research into the use of tape reached the point of obsession and madness. In China what I am doing is bound to be ridiculed. Through major events and my own extreme behaviour, I finally reconstructed the reality and merged it with art. But in the end, I've become yet another photo pasted on an employment form, forced to function as part of the machine.

In the end, 43 people, including the Rightist teachers and students who were connected with the publication, the peasants and the rural cadres who sympathised with them, were arrested and given long prison terms. This film is the third of the People's Memory Project. In the beginning of 2012, I began gathering statistics of deaths during the Three Year Famine. Children of ten to fifteen years old voluntarily joined me. Taking the video camera I gave them, they visited the old folks, interviewing them and gathered statistics. This project gave them the first opportunity to learn about and appreciate their village's history.

Wuchao Gate is the south gate of Longting Palace in Kaifeng city of China. In front of the Gate is the Wuchao Gate Square, a "Holy Land" for many people. They are engaged in activities that distinguish them from visitors, some worshiping the gods, some praying, and some acting. With different backgrounds and stories, people meet and communicate here. It is where they find spiritual comfort.

The moose of the Daxinganling Mountains in Northeast China possess great strength and majesty though their habitat is disappearing. The Ewenki tribe is forced to abandon their homes. Weijia, an Ewenki nicknamed "Moose", is unable to hunt and can do nothing but drink and tell stories of his vanishing culture. After moving to a southern city to be with his girlfriend, he is unable to quit alcohol and return home.

In ZOU Xueping's first feature, The Starving Village, ZOU interviewed residents of her hometown about their experiences during a famine that killed tens of millions. In this follow-up, ZOU tries to screen the film in her village, only to meet resistance from family and neighbours fearful of official reprisal. Undeterred, ZOU uses her camera to mediate her hometown's ability to confront its tragic past, with nearmiraculous results.

Every one of them is unique; they show people in various situations in the contemporary world and challenge the conventional definition and format of documentary. "Strange" implies a subversive nature and breaking the boundary; it comes across different fields; it's complex and ambiguous. Moreover, it is to question the concept of "reconstructed reality" and aims to stimulate more imagination.

This category is a retrospective of Taiwanese documentary aimed to look back at its history. Based on the theme, "When Camera Comes in Between", five Taiwanese classics are selected. We exam the changes in shooting when the camera appeared; if we regard "the changes brought upon by the appearance of the camera" as one of the elements in the creative process, when facing different protagonists and subject matters, how would the filmmakers respond to it?

Is Taiwan more than a pet to be cajoled and patted by the USA? Ahbien regularly goes for a walk on the streets with Mr. KO. But A-bien is a stray dog, not the President of ROC. Everyday, Mr. KO takes Ahbien to the streets to protest. He believes in his ideas - a kind of Don Quixote transplanted to the Far East. The world on TV and the world we live in. When the KMT government arrived in Taiwan in 1949, they brought dramatic changes upon Taiwan in every aspect. As the Korean War broke out in 1950, the US government provided many developing countries with aids. From 1951 to 1965, the US government offered the KMT government an annual loan of 100 million US dollars, used to promote the agricultural reform and other policies. The two governments established the Joint Commission on Rural Reconstruction together, and what happened in this period had huge impact on Taiwanese society.

It's nothing special for a girl to ride a motorbike. It would make headlines if she can operate a cultivator. The heroine, YEH Gui, taking over from her father, becomes the breadwinner. Later she wins the cultivator competition, enjoying a successful career and happy relationship.

The film aimed to draw the farmers closer. Narrated in Taiwanese dialect and set on a farm in the romanticised rural area, it demonstrates how a boar of a foreign origin mates with a sow of a Taiwanese breed in detail.

鄧南光是台灣早期重要的攝影家,也是最早使用動態影 像記錄台灣的人。這些被認為是家庭紀錄的影像,洋溢 著一種自然與親密感,事實上也反映了台灣當時的風土 民情,更是當時罕見以平民觀點出發的珍貴台灣影像。 本次播映是國家電影中心的「台灣電影經典數位修復 計畫」2K 數位修復版,重現了他在 1935 至 1941 年的 數部經典短片。包括拍攝家人搭船沿著淡水河嬉遊的 《漁遊》,記錄 1935 年日本統治台灣 40 週年時為了 展示統治成果,在台北等地所舉辦展覽會的《台灣博覽 會 8mm 新聞》,長子鄧世光就讀愛國婦人會台灣本部 附屬台北幼稚園的《台北幼稚園運動會》;《某一天》 拍攝日治時期的摩登男女出外踏青、划船,在草地上吸 菸、彈奏烏克麗麗的悠閒畫面;拍攝一對母子到淡水河 畔遊玩,呈現淡水河沿岸與大稻埕碼頭各種風貌的《淡 水河》,以及日本千葉縣房總半島,依靠捕捉海草和鮑 魚維生的海女為題的――《去看海女》。 70 年前的珍貴台灣影像重新出土,機會難得,切勿錯過! 10.18 (SAT) 16:00 D ★

DENG Nan-guang was a pioneer Taiwanese photographer in the 1930s and the first one to capture the images of Taiwan on film. The clips, often regarded as "family films" feel natural and intimate, but nevertheless, they reflect the Taiwanese traditions of the time. Moreover, they are precious images shot from a civilian's point of view. The digitally restored version screened at the 2014 TIDF is part of the Taiwan Film Classics Digital Restoration and Value-Adding Project supported by Taiwan Film Institute. Shot between 1935 and 1941, these short films including The Fishing Trip which the shows DENG's family outing in a boat, Taiwan Expo News on 8mm, which documented the expo held to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Japanese rule, Kindergarten Games, a sports day in the kindergarten where DENG's son attended, Some Day that shows young people picnicking, boating and playing music on the meadow, Tamsui River which reveals the scenic route along the river and Fisherwomen, about the women who harvested seaweed and abalone on the Japanese coast.

The terms such as "the 375 rent reduction", "leasing of government-owned land to tenants", "the sale of public land to farmers" and "land reform" which appeared only in the text books are now being passionately spoken in this film, bringing us back to the strict regime more than six decades ago.
