SHADOWS IN BACKLIT
“Architecture is the learned game, correct and magnificent, of forms assembled in the light. - Le Corbusier -
SHADOWS IN BACKLIT
The matter of the use of light and shadows has always played a major role in the field of architectural composition. As the quote formerly used is suggesting, for a various number of architects, the theme is central, almost as being the meaning of architecture itself. Light unveils the matter that composes what exists, while shadow hides it. Everything that exists has a shadow, from the tiniest crumble to the most monumental architectural product. Buildings are sculpted by the ever changing contrast between lights and shades. The purpose and the goal of “Shadows in Backlit is to disclose and highlight the shadows that are constantly present around us, the same shadows that sculpt the city creating its image and the visible feeling of its architecture. The research tries to understand not only the importance of light and shade but also how they influence our perception of the physical elements that are surrounding us. The pictures are almost always characterized by narrow framings in order to show the de-
tails of the analyzed buildings, with the aim of capturing its matter and drawing. The visual contradiction between black and white is the canvas where the matter is shown and where the pure structure of architecture is laid bare. Smooth surfaces, rough elements, eaves, projections, sequences of plains covered in black shadow or pure light, architecture is lowered to pure shape. The game of light and shadows has been emphasized with a strong, almost unnatural, contrast. In the end, the building are presented in a chronological order to understand the variations through time.
