The Meaning of Pride Maxwell Coviello You know what time it is. It’s almost June, A.K.A. LGBT Pride Month. This month, all over the country, LGBT people and their allies will be gathering in mostly metropolitan areas to celebrate queer identities. For many gay boys in the area where I live, this event is about going out, having fun, enjoying the summer, and checking out all of the shirtless cuties. New England is more tolerant that most parts of the East Coast when it comes to LGBT rights. As of 2011, most of the New England states now have same-sex marriages or civil unions. While the concept of Pride is by no means lost on many of us queers on the upper East Coast, it’s often easy to forget the history and importance of the gay pride movement, its parades, its gatherings, and the significance of this celebration. Saturday, 28 June 1969. The day of the Stonewall Inn Riots in the Greenwich Village district of Manhattan. This event has been regarded as the first bold instance of gay pride in our nation’s history. The truth is that many LGBT Americans had been fighting intolerance and persecution for years in smaller ways by forming several activist societies,

shadows of which existed even before the World Wars. And let us not forget the often overlooked Compton Cafeteria Riots, three years before Stonewall, in which members of the transgendered community actively retaliated against police harassment. Both this incident and the Stonewall riots marked the first major turning point in America’s LGBT history. Stonewall, however, is widely credited as the birth of the Pride movement because of its sheer scope and impact. For the first time in national history, heterosexist oppressors (in this case the police) were overwhelmed by a queer majority. The gay, bisexual, lesbian, and transgendered people comprising the mob were the ones who were, at least for those two nights in 1969, calling the shots and taking control of history. Later that year, at the Eastern Regional Conference of Homophile Organizations, a gathering of various national LGBT organizations, it was proposed that a celebration or march should occur annually every June on the anniversary of Stonewall in New York City. From out of this wish came the Gay Liberation Front, the HRC of its day. The GLF proposal asked for a more peaceful demonstration that nevertheless carried the same weight and power as the initial riots. After deliberation and clashes of ideologies by various LGBT organizations, the first “Gay Liberation March” (notably excluding Trans, Bisexual, and Lesbian identities

from the title) was planned for New York City on June 28, 1970. However, Chicago beat them to it and held their Gay Liberation March one day earlier, thus making Chicago the first American city to hold what we today recognize as a “Pride”. It’s a little known fact in gay history, but yes, Chicago is technically the birthplace of the gay pride parade! While the first gatherings and marches embodied the same celebratory status that remain in contemporary Prides, they were also of a much more serious and even radical tone akin to first Civil Rights demonstrations. This was also reflected in their name as “Liberation Marches”. In some smaller cities, these marches were often even more political and serious. Participants in one of the first parades in Northampton, MA, for example, wore paper bags over their heads so employers could not recognize them and potentially fire them (in a time before workplace discrimination laws were implemented). As time went on and LGBT citizens were granted some rights and protection, the nature of Pride and pride parades somewhat shifted. Pride parades now carry different controversies, one of which is their commercialism and political significance (or sometimes lack thereof). Many LGBT citizens stand somewhat divided on the meaning and importance of Prides. For example, the Gay Shame movement arose in direct response to this commercialism and mainstreaming of Gay Pride with a desire, in a sense, to return to the roots of initial gay liberation ideologies. In addition to these struggles is the inclusion of transgendered and bisexual people, many of whom have been unfairly unrepresented in some parades and gatherings.

Due to these many reasons, Prides are just as deliciously controversial as ever. This is by no means bad or detrimental to the LGBT rights movement. If we did not have (civil) internal struggles and clashes no progress could be made. Some have made the claim that our civil rights movement has been so much more difficult than that of the racial civil rights movements of the sixties and seventies. To which I respond: “no duh”. LGBT is a fantastic intersection of identities, made even more obvious by the fact that there is more than one letter in that often encompassing acronym. Beyond sexuality, being LGBT is often a racial, theological, and national experience. With so many different identities at play, of course it’s going to be difficult to settle in on a “right way” to both celebrate and espouse our LGBT heritage and desire. And really, when it comes to the queer community, the “right way” is just plain boring anyway! Because what’s great is that Pride (and even Shame) movements will continue to evolve and continue to be celebrated. More than a decade ago, then-President Bill Clinton declared June to be Gay and Lesbian Pride Month. A decade later, President Barack Obama made an addendum to this statement by including bisexual and transgendered identities in this proclamation. Pride, not just the event but the spirit, has been recognized and lauded at a national level. For some, Pride transcends politics. It is a celebration of the self; all of our great queer selves and why society--and to an extent this country--should feel lucky to have us around.

Did someone say sausage fest?! Don’t worry, this is one that everyone will love…Well maybe everyone except for those hardcore vegetarians and vegans (if that’s you, don’t turn away, there’s something for everyone at Gene’s; as long as you can look beyond the display cases of endless meat). Located in the historic German neighborhood of Lincoln Square, Gene’s embraces European culture and cuisine with plenty of tradition.

Back in early 1972, two Polish immigrant brothers named John and Gene opened up a quaint neighborhood deli along West Roscoe. Due to the overwhelming popularity of their smoked sausage and Polish specialties, they were pressured to relocate to a larger shop off Belmont Avenue. Today, they find themselves celebrating their 37th anniversary with the start of a new chapter in their family history, Gene’s Sausage Shop & Delicatessen. Located in the 57-year-old Meyer’s Delicatessen, they created an ultra modern space with tons of glass and beautiful wood all set around the antique Meyer’s neon sign that hangs in the mezzanine. Gene’s has two floors of European, organic and local goodness including wines/ beers, teas, mustards, marmalades, fresh produce, dairy products, chocolates and did I say sausage? Turkey sausage, pork sausage, lamb sausage, potato sausage, spiced sausage, smoked sausage…anything they can squeeze into casing is game! Being that spring has finally sprung, pack up your picnic baskets and take advantage of their deli’s freshly prepared salads (Russian beets, sauerkraut, pickles, etc.), breads (don’t miss out on the pretzel rolls), meats and pastries (kolachkes included). I rave to friends about Gene’s tasty potato pancakes, potato sausages (with bacon bits hidden inside), cabbage rolls, and pierogis—meat, potato, cheese and sweet ones all available. Better yet, take advantage of their new rooftop Biergarten! Thankfully, there’s no need to fear any Travelocity gnomes magically appearing up there. Make your way to Gene’s, just look for the life size cow in the sky that reigns over Lincoln Ave.

Kiss Me anthony venanzio

Now that we are finished with the snow and we are expecting nicer and warmer weather, we are still faced with enduring some chilly days from the aftermath of a terrible winter. During this time our bodies are undergoing weather changes and we all seem to forget about the most important feature of our face. Our lips! “Lips aren’t the most important thing on your face.” Well, I beg to differ. When you are dropped off at home from a wonderful first date, you will want to kiss the person you were with. The first feature that people notice about you is your smile, and what surrounds your smile? Lips. It seems to me that nowadays, we will just pick up a tube of whatever’s on sale at the drug store and slather it all over our mouth when our lips feel dry. These things don’t actually work to correct the issues in our lips, they just put a thin layer of wax overtop the surface which can actually pull moisture out and it only relives the irritation for a short period of time. This is why we need to apply 50,000 times a day. These things don’t actually moisturize or condition our lips like we need them to. So let’s start at the beginning.

Chances are that you probably have some peeling occurring. A good lip scrub is essential in removing this. Don’t bite the skin off of your lips, or peel it off yourself with your fingers. Exfoliate it off with the proper products to avoid tearing, or bleeding. A personal favorite of mine would be the Fresh Brown Sugar Lip Polish. Use this 2 to 3 times a week, or as needed to remove the dead skin. As for moisturizing and conditioning, toss the drug store stuff and get yourself a real moisturizer! I always keep my Caudalíe Lip Conditioner in my pocket, and for the cost, you can’t go wrong! In my bathroom I keep a little jar of SUPER Lush Lips with coconut oil, I use this twice a day, morning and evening, and it keeps me well balanced and moisturized. I keep the Caudalíe Lip Conditioner on hand to use after lunch or while I’m out and about to ensure that my lips always look moist and ready to kiss. Also try Laura Mercier Lip Silk, Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15, or the Kiss Me products from Philosophy. All are wonderful lip treatments and will work wonders for that beautiful mouth of yours!

tips

to help you get into shape this summer.

Ah, summertime is here. It's probably one of our favorite, but most stressful seasons. It's wonderful because the days are long, and the weather is beautiful. It's a time to get together with family, friends, and even dates! We hit the beach, and bask in the sun's rays while lying around scantily clad. We attend summer street fests every weekend. We eat and drink and well…eat and drink. It’s possible that you didn’t hit the gym all winter. Spring came and went. Here we are now with summer just weeks away. You look at yourself in the mirror and either say, “Not too bad,” or “Uh-Oh, better get to work!” Yes, there is still time. Though you need to get started today. Now I’ve been here myself and my weight has fluctuated over the years. I finally decided to put an end to the madness and stay consistent with my healthy lifestyle choices. So how do we get in shape this summer and keep it off throughout the year? questions for Robert? email him at rarroyo@ffc.com

#1 stay hydrated

(not the one on halsted.)

Are you even hungry? Or are you just thirsty? The human body is made up of 55% to 78% water depending on body size. Let’s get real. You’ll need this the most above all things. You know you’re well hydrated when your urine is clear. Heading to the bathroom every 20 minutes is a good indication that you’re well hydrated. If your taking your vitamins that’s another thing.

#2 Mom was right, about taking vitamins.

A daily multivitamin is an inexpensive nutrition insurance policy. Try to take one every day.

#3 sign up for a fall event

Calling all runner’s, bikers and swimmers! It's easy to get sidetracked during the summer with all the fun outdoor eating and drinking activities going on. Every year, I try to find an interesting or challenging fall event to sign up for and begin training now. You and your friends could start training for a marathon, triathlon or a Muddy Buddy. The main thing is find something that will get and keep you physically active and focused during the summer and throughout the year.

#4 watch your fruit and dairy intake

Watch the sugar intake from your fruits this could be a bit much for your body possibly, I will only eat 1 cup of fruit a day (Darker Fruits are high in Antioxidants) & eat plenty of veggies for vitamins & minerals. Ditch the cheerios & eat more oatmeal, not occasionally (everyday, create a system) I’m guessing you eat this with milk, watch your dairy intake also, they are full of simple sugars, eat with water & you can't go wrong.

#5 move it, or lose it

You'll need to incorporate two to three days a week of strength training and three to five days a week of cardiovascular training into your lifestyle. Combine all this together, and you have one incredible recipe for success.

#6 teamwork counts too

Are you having trouble staying motivated? find a workout buddy or partner that shares the same goals as you. Tell them what you hope to accomplish. Listen to what they want. Chances are you both might want the same thing!

#7 ZZZZZ…ZZZZ…ZZZZZ

Your body needs sleep. You should have 6 to 8 hours at least. That’s how your muscles grow after you’ve pumped some iron. You are also recovering. Think about it, you’re not eating when you sleep. Your already burning calories and losing weight!

#8 1 DRINK = 10 MINS OF CARDIO

I’m not perfect. No one is. If you are going to be sipping on cocktails by the beach, having work meetings over drinks, or painting the town red with that new hottie you just met, drink responsibly. One drink equals 10 minutes of cardio the next day. You’ll burn off the calories from the night before and you may even think twice about ordering that 4th margarita. But I know you know better.

#9 WHEN IN ROME, DO AS THE ROMANS DO

Are you vacationing a lot this summer? If so, walk everywhere! Take advantage of sightseeing outdoors on foot. Don’t be one of those people that said they put on an extra 10 pounds after coming back from that cruise. Some resorts have fitness centers and also weekly group class schedules. Have you ever taken a yoga class by the beach? You should start.

#10 GET OUT THE SUMMER SWIMWEAR

Try it on. Look in the mirror. Decide what plan of action to take. Then, make it happen. You can make this the best summer ever, but it all depends on you. You're worth it. Have a wonderful, healthy and very happy summer!

peek into the next steps of Gaga, but I feared it was too much too soon. Then she and i-Tunes teamed up, along with Words with Friends, Amazon, and I’m sure I’m missing todd paulson others here, to release more tracks, weekly, and prior to the actual release. We had been given the legal right to buy/listen/download/ steal (your choice) “Judas”, “The Edge of Glory”, and “Hair”. That being said, my point of the view of the album became less of anticipation, and more of a roll of the eyes. Every song sounded like the other. “Born This Way”, the track, was already loosing it’s power after it became every gay, fat, black, white, tan, bald, hairy, bi-curious, lesbian, tranny, hot-mess, and Glee cast members theme song. The before mentioned singles followed and fell into a category for people who run to the dance floor or turn up their radio volume when they hear those type of on sale songs because the songs hit all the key pop May 23rd,2011 tools: catchy beat, lack of lyrics, and sound like everything else. For the week that I had “Born This Way” sev- Onto the more positive notes; as mentioned eral opening headlines came to mind for my at the beginning, there are some Madonna review – “Did you like the last 3 albums from moments, and as a Madonna fan, I like what Madonna? Good! Then you’ll love BTW” – I hear. “Bloody Mary”, “Electric Chapel”, “If you love to dance at Roscoe’s, then you’ll and “Heavy Metal Lover” can fit into love the first 4-singles of BTW” – and “Btw, Madge’s “Confessions on a Dance Floor” or BTW, is born to make you dance!” But after “Sticky & Sweet” albums, while “Born This each line was written that buzzer went off in Way” has more of an “Express Yourself” feel my head, similar to the one you would hear on (copy?). a game show after a wrong answer. Gaga also turns religious throughout the I will start out, however, by stating that I really album. “Judas”, along with its video, is the most to stand out of the Jesus name- dropexpected my review to lean more towards the ping tunes (“Black Jesus”, “Electric Chapel”, dislike than the like for this album. From the “Hair”, and “Bloody Mary” all give some start, the title track came out full-speed, and religious props). But don’t expect to be way ahead of the album release (March 12th single release vs. a May 24th album drop). Its preached to. The God-loving audience will find its subtleties, while the non-believers message of “you are who you are and there is nothing wrong with that” proved to be a great won’t be offended by the references.

BORN

THIS

WAY Lady GAGA

Then there are the deeper cuts, the tracks that you’ll only hear by your choosing (and you should choose them), “Government Hooker” and “Heavy Metal Lover”. The former is a modern dance trip that is sure to be a crowd pleaser at Berlin nightclub. It’s hard, hot, sweaty, and ends up leaving you feeling sticky. While the latter is a marchto-the-beat dance tune that you makes you want more out of it. Lastly, and not leastly, there always seems to be a language lesson in each Gaga album; in her debut she threw in an occasional French word or two, and now on BTW she drives out a song in German. You may need to head down to Lincoln Square and over to the Brauhaus to have them translate “SchiBe”, but it’s enough to get you out on the dance floor. And that is the overall format of BTW, it’s a dance album. From the beat build-up of track one, “Mary the Night” – every track gets you moving in some way, and covers all the dance genres from modern electronic to a touch of the 80’s synch (and a splash of sax). Gaga does play better on disc/record/mp3. Her live shows tend to be more of a protest than a tap-your-feet kind of show. With BTW she’s come up with a way to make everyone feel accepted, and not alone, without having to scream about it. You can be who you are, because you were born that way, and, btw, you can dance your ass off because of it.

knitting No, I am not kidding. BrentPerrotti

Well spring has been off to a slow and rainy start. Many of us wonder when the nice weather will return and what to do until then. A good option to spend these rainy days, and the soon to be to hot to go out and do anything, is knitting. Knitting is a wonderful pastime that is centuries old. Oldest known knitted item is socks from ancient Egypt. While knitting alot of the time is thought to be a hobby that is only enjoyed by little old ladies, it has a much farther reaching appeal and history. The last few years knitting has seen a huge increase in popularity. Everyone seems to be knitting these days boys and girls, kids at school, and buisness people on the “ L” and even celebrities are seen work with their yarn and needles between shoots on films. There are not many activities out there than can bring very different groups together. Chicago is a total knitting hot spot, especially the Andersonville neighborhood. Andersonville has lots to offer knitters. Recently two brand new yarn shops have opened on Clark St. including Windy Knitty. Walking into Windy Knitty is always wonderful. It has a very bright open design lots of windows let in lots of light

brent.perrotti@outinchi.com

helping to create a very cheerful experience. There is also a wide selection of yarns and notions, and a friendly staff that makes you feel like family from the first time you step in the door. Andersonville also has a very lively Stitch N’ Bitch group that meets every Tuesday at Kopi: A Traveler’s Cafe. The group meets from about 7pm to 9pm and has been doing so for several years. The group ranges anywhere to five to ten people on average for a givin evening. There are people of all levels of skill in knit and crochet alike. So perhaps the next time you have free time make your way down to Andersonville. You could find yourself with a new skill and a much fuller social calendar. You could be a knitter!
