April is Fair Housing Month By: Sabine Ingerson The Oswego County Fair Housing Council of Oswego is celebrating the 46th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act with publicity, a proclamation by the County Legislature, and a coloring contest which is open to all children in our county. We hope you are encouraging all children to participate. A coloring contest form can be found in this newsletter. Jim Karasek (ARISE Oswego Manager of Independent Living Services) and I have been appointed to represent ARISE on the Oswego Fair Housing Council. During the meetings we inform and share information with representatives of housing programs, providers, realtors, and bankers. The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination by landlords and real estate companies as well as municipalities, insurance companies, banks, or other lending institutions because of race, religion, sex, national origin, familial status, or disability. As an Independent Living Center we are often called when a resident feels they are discriminated against because of their disability. Since 1991 all new construction of multi-family dwellings for four or more families must have certain accessibility features like an accessible entrance on an accessible route, doors that are wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair, accessible common and public use areas, light switches, electrical outlets and thermostats in accessible locations, reinforcements in bathroom walls to accommodate grab bar installation, and usable kitchens and bathrooms too, so that a wheelchair can maneuver about the space. In Oswego many houses were built decades before these new requirements came into effect. Our advocates have been working with many individuals and their landlords to bring about solutions and accommodations of older buildings. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions about housing issues. Jim Karasek and the advocates in our Independent Living Services Department will be glad to help you.
Our Mission To work with people of all abilities to create a fair and just community in which everyone can fully participate. Page 1

MSC Blog By: Danielle Fox There are a lot of special days in April and I figured I would pick one that is important to me and share some facts. Earth Day is on April 22. The first Earth Day happened on April 22, 1970. More than 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to talk about ways to help our environment. The1970 Earth Day brought together Republicans, Democrats, wealthy people, the working class, farmers, and labor leaders because they all realized that we only have this planet to live on and we need to take care of it. The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the government came up with the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts.
Interesting Facts:
Half a million trees must be cut down to make each weeks’ Sunday newspapers.
14 billion pounds of trash is dumped into the ocean each year.
Plastic garbage thrown into the ocean kill as many as 1 million sea creatures each year.
Most families throw away 88 pounds of plastic each year.
By Earth Day 2010 there were more than 1 billion people in over 180 countries celebrating this day.
Ways you can help:
Use fluorescent bulbs. If each household in the US replaced one regular light bulb with one of these it would reduce the amount of pollution that is equivalent to removing one million cars from the road.
Plant a tree. Its good for the air and the land, can help shade your house, and can help you save on cooling costs.
Hang dry. Your clothes will maintain their color and fit while you save money on your energy bill.
Turn off the lights. Turn them off when you leave a room. You will save energy, help cooling costs, and prolong life of the bulb.
Invest in your own coffee cup. This will cut down on waste. Your coffee cup will also keep your beverage hot for longer and help you save money.
Recycle paper. You can use both sides. Let your kids use it to make crafts. You can even recycle this newsletter. If you have an e-mail address, you can help by letting us send you the newsletter via e-mail.
If we all do what we can, we can make a huge difference and ensure that our children and grandchildren will have a nice and clean place to grow up.
