A MESSAGE TO OUR FRIENDS

Tom McKeown

Executive Director

A number of decades ago, my brother Kevin, a student at SUNY Brockport, thought about changing his major to philosophy. At the time, our father and his partner were owners of a small business. When my brother told my father of his plans, I recall my father’s reaction. With a fair amount of teasing and perhaps a touch of sarcasm, he announced, “That’s just what this company needs: a philosopher! We’ll set up a cracker barrel at the back of the store, invite customers in for coffee, and Kevin can expound on the meaning of life.”

These outcomes are sadly absent for 70% of people with disabilities of working age. It’s a shame. Since our beginning 35 years ago, we at ARISE demonstrate our commitment to reverse this trend. Our organization is directed and led by people with disabilities at every level. We are also skilled at supporting the job-finding and job-maintaining goals of others (with 106 persons hired, through our partnering efforts, in this past year). Governor Cuomo this very month formed a commission to reverse the same unjust trend.

They both would have affirmed, however, that one’s value does not entirely rest on one’s job (or else why would God have invented golf, they would agree). We are far more than what we do, especially what we do at our jobs.

We need to assure that people, especially those with disabilities who have been denied an equal opportunity, have access to satisfying, meaningful work. In all kinds of fields. Including perhaps mathematics, cosmology (where the most brilliant thinker of our era happens to be a person, Steven Hawkins, with a significant disability) and even philosophy.

But, with that belief established, we know that for many of us, our jobs are important. For the fortunate among us, our jobs provide self-satisfaction and a sense that we are involved in activities with outcomes that benefit others. For most, jobs provide at least an income that assists toward reaching other goals.

NEWSFLASH ARISE & Ski Call for Volunteers

Happy Retirement and New Beginnings

As the leaves start to change, do you start daydreaming about the upcoming ski season? The crisp mornings, sparkling snow on the ground and carving clean, circular arcs into the freshly groomed slopes. For many people with disabilities, the joys of skiing are dreams at best. Our ARISE & Ski Program can bring those dreams to reality.

Join us as we wish Greg Guy, Director of Cayuga/Seneca County Office, a happy retirement! Greg played a vital role in the completion of the merger between Options for Independence and ARISE.

Our ability to provide adaptive winter sports to the community is directly related to the number of volunteers we have, so your participation can truly have an impact. To learn more, contact Richelle Maki, Program Coordinator, at ski@ariseinc.org or 671-3094.

Kate Budlong will be taking over Greg’s position as she moves from her current role as the Lead Regional Resource Development Specialist for our Nursing Home Diversion and Transition Program. She brings a wealth of experience with ARISE as well as the 8-county region we serve through the Regional Resource Development Center (RRDC).

UNIQUE ARTWORK SHINES AT THE EVERSON

Opening Exhibition at the Everson Shares Creative Voices of Artists with Disabilities Artists and their families beamed with pride as they arrived at the Everson Museum for the debut of UNIQUE 2014. Every year, we receive many more submissions than we can include in the magazine. It has become quite a competitive process as artists and writers wait on pins and needles to see if their piece has been selected. The fourteenth edition showcases 58 pieces by 59 talented artists and writers. These were selected by the Editorial Board from over 100 submissions created by people all across Central New York ranging in age from 13 to 80. In his remarks during the opening reception, Sean Kirst, columnist for The Post-Standard and UNIQUE Editorial Board Member, said, “In that sense, each piece of art is an invitation into an intimate world, an act of trust, and any act of trust is a form of honor … and I feel each year that I’m the lucky one for what I learn from every piece, from what I feel, in very different ways, for the first time. For that opportunity, for that gift, I thank the artists.” We are so proud to feature outstanding creative work and are so grateful to the Everson Museum of Art and all of the UNIQUE sponsors who make this publication and exhibition possible.

DID YOU KNOW?

3 Things You May Not Know About Our Employment Programs 1. We’re Breaking Down Barriers

Artist Michael Simmons proudly talking about his painting, “The Lone Wolf.” Michael shared that because he is blind, he paints using his other senses.

Barriers to employment come in many forms. From physical barriers like transportation issues to attitudinal barriers like employer biases, our team works each day to help people overcome obstacles and succeed in the workplace. Gifts in support of our Employment Programs have been critical in supplementing our ability to ensure that people have access to proper interview attire and are able to pay for transportation to their job interviews.

2. What Are Your Interests?

That’s the first question our employment consultants ask when they meet with people. Our staff works individually with each person to find a job that matches that individual’s strengths, personal interests, and goals. Since last July, we’ve placed over 100 people in jobs with titles ranging from Benefits Specialist to Baker, Mechanic, Nurses’ Aide, and more. No two people are the same so we take a truly individualized approach in everything we do. There’s no cookie cutter approach here!

3. Looking To Fill A Position? We Can Help!

PROJECT We’re 52% There!

ARISE & RIDE AT THE FARM 4th Annual Event A Big Success

What started as an idea from long-time Farm volunteer, Barbara Falkowski, has grown into one of our largest events of the year. More than 350 people came out for the fourth annual ARISE & Ride at the Farm, enjoying a beautiful day at the farm cycling, walking, wheeling, and playing! We were pleased to welcome a record number of cyclists early in the morning for the 25-mile or 12-mile bike rides through the Chittenango countryside. Volunteers including groups from BNY Mellon and Excellus came out to guide the cyclists and cheer them on along the route. Welcoming Our New Partners:

Reisman Foundation Allyn Foundation Thank You For Helping Us Reach the $15,000 Snow Foundation Challenge Grant! 6

Friends and family came together, formed teams, and made their way around the track in support of the ARISE at the Farm Playground Park Project. The walk had eight stations run by volunteers that offered a full and very fun sensory experience including bubbles, water games, and more! We are so grateful for all of the cyclists and Walk & Wheel-A-Thon participants who came out to support the playground fundraising effort, as well as their friends and family who joined by making gifts. Because of your generosity, we were not only able to meet the Snow

Foundation’s $15,000 challenge grant - we exceeded it! Every dollar donated brought us one step closer to our ultimate goal of building an accessible playground at the Farm. The event would have not been possible without the generous support of our sponsors, the wonderful crew of volunteers who came out to lend a hand, and our continued partners like Tops Friendly Markets for donating all of the food and Mark Perrin from the bikery who again provided SAG support. We’d like to send a special thank you to Ed Falkowski, the Syracuse Police Department, and the Madison County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance with the ride! There’s still time to donate to the ARISE at the Farm Playground Park Project. We are halfway there - you can help bring us the rest of the way! TREASURING MEMORIES

CELEBRATING & REMEMBERING OUR LOVED ONES Sharing memories of a loved one can bring comfort as we have to learn to live without a cherished family member. And asking that donations in memory of a loved one be made to a charity can touch lives in special ways. Victoria Lunkenheimer loved children and she loved animals. When faced with the loss of this cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Victoria’s family wanted to honor her memory.

SPECIAL THANKS Thanks to our community partners and friends, who have recently offered their support: • Evergreen Hills Golf Course for hosting a two-day golf clinic for ARISE participants.

Victoria’s daughter, Lura Lunkenheimer Gramet, and her family knew about the benefits of therapeutic horseback riding from the experiences of their young neighbor, Leo. Asking that donations to ARISE at the Farm be made in Victoria’s memory felt like a wonderful way to celebrate a woman who had a passion for both kids and animals. Francis Hahn loved to ski and his family chose to honor him by making it possible for others to enjoy the sport he loved. The donations we have received in Francis’ memory will support our adaptive ski and snowboard program at Toggenburg Winters Sports Center. When Gene Beckeman’s family learned about our ARISE & Ski program, they chose to honor his memory by asking for donations to ensure our continued ability to offer lessons for people with disabilities.

• Nationwide staff for coming together and rolling up their sleeves to build a ramp to preserve a family’s independence.

These are much more than donations. They are gifts entrusted to us to continue the legacy of loved ones and their interests. We are humbled and honored as we carry on their passions at ARISE.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

BRIAN DAVIS BUILDS BENCHES FOR THE FARM Next time you’re out at the Farm you’ll notice that the benches around the paved track are looking better than ever! Eagle Scout Brian Davis fundraised for supplies and gathered and led a crew of volunteers to help tackle refinishing, repairing, or replacing every one of the 18 benches around the track. Brian told us, “I was assessing different Eagle Scout projects when I was presented with painting benches for ARISE. I went out to the Farm and met with Lt. Cook and Nancy Eaton. As I walked around the track, I knew this was going to be a good Eagle Scout project. It was something I was capable of successfully completing and I knew it would benefit many people for years to come.” We are so grateful for Brian’s efforts that will make it possible for countless people to enjoy as they make their way around the track.

• Syracuse Equine Veterinary Specialists who selected ARISE at the Farm to benefit from their 9/6 event. • Anjali Eastman-Persaud for requesting donations to the Farm in lieu of birthday gifts. Our horses are enjoying the special treats they received and the gift cards, grooming tools, and ropes will be extremely helpful to both people and horses! • Tully Lumber Supply for donating half of the lumber for the footing project in the arena! This project would have not been possible without their support.
