A MESSAGE TO OUR FRIENDS THE DONKEY BRAYS AND THE PONY NEIGHS I’m not sure when I first heard the song “All God’s Critters Got a Place in the Choir.” And I had no idea who wrote it until I did research for this little piece. Answer: Bill Staines, born in 1947, lives in New Hampshire.

Tom McKeown

Executive Director

What a fine imagination Bill has. He has also overcome a challenge to become a musician. Bill is left-handed and plays a right-handed guitar upside-down, with the bass strings on the bottom. In the song, each of the critters has a unique sound to add to the symphony. The variety yields a rich harmony. I am reminded of that fact when I reflect on the diversity of our activities in multiple communities in Central New York. The Oswego ramp-building activities are especially on my mind. Over many years, groups of dedicated volunteers have constructed scores of ramps that enable people to remain in their own homes. Soon after we built a ramp for one man he experienced a fire that totally destroyed his home. Except for the ramp. And he lives and breathes today because he was able to exit the home in time.

2

Staff in Auburn organized an annual conference in June. I attended the conference for many years when it was organized by some of these same staff members when they worked for Options for Independence. Now as ARISE employees, they dedicated the same energy to pull off a successful event. We were delighted to hear the keynote speaker, Alec Frazier, as he described his life with autism. Our advocates in Oneida and Syracuse are taking leadership roles to celebrate the 24th anniversary of the landmark civil rights legislation: the Americans with Disabilities Act. Parades will be held in late July. And we may not have donkeys at the Farm, but our ponies neigh, and the new fainting goat faints. So I am told. To the delight of all the summer campers. I invite all these fine advocates, staff, and volunteers to take a bow. And I recommend that the rest of us “clap our hands, paws, or anything we got.”

RAISING DISABILITY AWARENESS ARISE Partners with Millard Fillmore Elementary School In collaboration with teachers from Millard Fillmore Elementary School in Moravia, ARISE hosted an interactive, full-day workshop on disability awareness. The goal of the event was to give students an understanding of what it is like to live day-to-day with a disability and to show them that people who have disabilities are able to do the same things as everyone else, but maybe just a little bit differently.

Greg, petting Seers while asking intriguing questions of Lance and Susan and taking turns pushing themselves up the aisles in a wheelchair. Teachers also simulated what it would be like to live with different types of disabilities throughout the entire day. The annual Disability Awareness Day is just one of the many outreach initiatives done by the Cayuga/Seneca County office staff each year. On June 26th, we once again organized a full day conference of workshops and sessions on disability services and tools that help people live independently in the community.

After their afternoon assembly, students had the opportunity to pose questions to a panel including: Darryl Storie, who uses a wheelchair; Susan Gray, ARISE Board Member, who Darryl Storie shows students how his wheelchair became blind at 19 and uses a unloads from his car’s rooftop carrier. white cane; Lance Lyons, who We’d like to thank the participants at Millard Fillmore became blind in his 20’s and now has a seeing eye dog Elementary, Darryl Storie, Susan Gray, Lance Lyons named “Seers;” and Greg Guy, ARISE Director of the and Greg Guy for their time and energy in Cayuga & Seneca County office, who has limited use of making Disability Awareness Day a success! Mental Health Outreach Expands

The Americans with Disabilities Act will be turning 24 in July! Our Cayuga/Seneca County office celebrated this important anniversary at their June 26th conference and celebrations continue in other counties through July. Together we can work to ensure that every community is open to all and make sure that the civil rights of people with disabilities are protected.

In an effort to provide support to children and families who are experiencing emotional distress, our SchoolBased Mental Health program is expanding. We will now also be in Lyncourt and Huntington, and we are placing an additional clinician at Frazer K-8 School.

COMING TOGETHER FOR RAMPS

Ride for Ramps Brings Critical Funds as the Need Continues to Grow Special Thanks To Our 2014 ARISE & Ride for Ramps Sponsors!

Thanks to a great partnership with Lighthouse Lanes and the Oswego Speedway, our 2014 Ride for Ramps was bigger and better than ever. Motorcyclists enjoyed a beautiful ride, runners took on the 5K route, and kids had the special opportunity to ride their bikes on the Oswego Speedway Track. Since we do not receive any public funding for the Ramp Program in Oswego County, donations are critical to our ability to respond to needs in the community. The Ride for Ramps event gave a much-needed boost of money to the program. Funds raised that day will purchase materials for 10 ramps. However, the waiting list grows almost daily with people who are in urgent need of regaining their freedom. Right now, there are 60 people on the list. Some cannot come home from a hospital/nursing home because they do not have a ramp while others are at risk of having to leave their home because without a ramp, they are unable to safely enter and exit their home. There are many ways you can make a difference and help us meet this need. You can: make a gift, volunteer at one of our builds (construction experience is a plus but not necessary), form a corporate volunteer team, and more. If you would like to learn how you can make a difference, contact Nancy Kern Kronen at 671-2903 or nkronen@ariseinc.org.

3 Things You May Not Know about UNIQUE 1. The 2014 Editorial Board is the Largest One Yet!

With 13 members, the UNIQUE Editorial Board has more than doubled over the past few years! 2. UNIQUE Turns Fourteen This Year!

The 2014 UNIQUE Magazine will mark the 14th anniversary of the publication! UNIQUE has developed into a true community celebration over the years. Our list of traveling exhibitions continues to grow and we are so grateful to the Everson Museum of Art for hosting the opening exhibition for the fourth year in a row.

2. UNIQUE Features A Diverse Group of Artists

From children as young as eleven to adults in their 90s, UNIQUE has been proud to feature work from a diverse group of artists. As 2013 & 2014 Editorial Board Member Dan Cummings said, “...each entry gave me a glimpse into the life of another human being. These artist expressions of hope and pain, love and loss are as unique as the individuals who created them. Often, what can’t be expressed in any other way, finds an ideal outlet in a poem, an essay, a drawing, painting, or piece of sculpture.”

Jonathan Tipton, 2014 UNIQUE Artist, with Robert Relph and Kristen North from Relph Benefit Advisors. Their firm purchased a full-size print of his drawing for their office.

UNIQUE 2014 will open to the public at the Everson Museum of Art from 8/15 - 9/21.

BrandiLee & Gavin

As parents of children who participate in programs at ARISE at the Farm, we’ve seen the difference the Farm has made on our children. You can only imagine the chills we felt when Emma sat up for the first time on the horse, or, when Gavin developed strength so that he could hold his head up by himself longer. Our families’ stories are not unique, and we know that many other families hold similar moments in their hearts as well.

When we first learned about the playground project, we thought it was very interesting. When we saw the initial plans and realized what it would mean for our kids, we became ecstatic! As parents of children who use wheelchairs, we are constantly seeking Casey & Emma experiences that are fully available to them. So often we are in places where our child can do one or two activities while other kids are running around from one thing to another.

MAKE YOUR

DOUBLE THE SNOW FOUNDATION WILL

MATCH YOUR GIFT (CONTINUED) We want to help make this playground a reality, and we hope you’ll join us! Every dollar that is raised will go directly towards the playground fund. We’re also excited to share that the Snow Foundation will be matching each dollar up to $15,000. That means each gift will automatically be doubled – for every $50, ARISE at the Farm will receive $100. Your support can make a huge difference! In addition to making a one-time gift, you can also join us on July 26th for ARISE & Ride at the Farm! In addition to the 25- and 12-mile bike rides that day, we’re so excited about the first ever Walk & WheelA-Thon. The walk or wheel trip will take place around the 7/8-mile paved track at the Farm and will be a fun experience for the entire family. Sensory activity stations will be spaced around the track to provide an opportunity to play and rest. Our kids are taking charge and creating their own fundraising pages (Let’s go Team Emma and Team Gavin!). If you’re unable to make it to the event, you can also register as a “virtual rider” and help fundraise online. Or, you can pledge another rider or make a one-time donation. Every dollar counts. No gift is too little – especially since it’s doubled.

FINDING THE RIGHT FIT

My Experience with Adaptive Communication Devices By: Michael Theobald For people that can’t communicate clearly, being able to use an augmentative speech device is very important. Unfortunately, there isn’t a simple set of rules regarding an individual’s disability and the type of device that may best fit their needs

ARISE Receives United Way Award

It was a big night for ARISE at the United Way Achievements in Caring Community Appreciation Event! We were honored to receive the 2013 Partner Agency Award and we were thrilled that ARISE Foundation Board Member, Lt. Col. Edward Cook, was recognized as the Exceptional Community Volunteer of the Year! We are proud to partner with United Way and our employees are proud United Way supporters.

The first device I got, in 2009, was a Dynavox, which was covered under Medicaid and cost close to $7,000. Shortly after I got the device I got a hands-free aftermarket head mouse ($500). The head mouse consists of a small dot that I would put on my forehead and a small device that looked like a webcam. A mouse icon on the screen would follow the dot as my forehead moved, allowing me to have better control of the mouse. Unfortunately, the Dynavox was very bulky and heavy. Since I have limited ability to lift or move objects, this made it very difficult for me to transport or use the device. I also felt that the software wasn’t fast enough, and would find myself waiting for programs to open. It was also very noisy, which made me feel very nervous and embarrassed. While the Dynavox had a touch screen, I struggled to press the screen hard enough to select what I wanted to input. Because the Dynavox wasn’t helping me communicate effectively, I decided it was time to try the iPad and the Proloquo2go app to see if it was a better fit. The app was a lot faster but I did have a few problems with the new device. First, the iPad wasn’t connected to my wheelchair, so I kept dropping it. Also, the app drains the battery relatively quickly and the speaker on the iPad isn’t always loud enough. Luckily, there are heavyduty cases as well as portable battery extenders and Bluetooth speakers that can help resolve these issues. The biggest drawback I have found with the iPad is the lack of head mouse and eye-gaze technology. Eye-gaze is an add-on offered on the Dynavox that follows the heat of the user’s pupils and selects things by following them. This gives individuals with less mobility and dexterity an option for communication. While this is not currently available on the iPad, I am excited to have discovered there is a Bluetooth button system in development. Until then, I have to rely solely on my slow-moving arms.

ARISE Recognizes TGI Fridays ARISE was pleased to present TGI Fridays with a 2014 Special Recognition Award for their commitment to hiring people with disabilities. Pictured (left to right): Mark DenDanto, ARISE Employment Consultant; Carl Benz, TGI Fridays; and Nichole McGrath, ARISE Job Coach.

8

The biggest difference that I have found between the two systems is that the Proloquo2go app has been constantly improved in order to meet market demands. With all of the advances in technology, it will be exciting to see the limitless possibilities. However, at the end of the day it’s still up to each individual to see which device works best for their own personal situation.
