Wednesday, April 22, 2015 Oncenter Convention Center Honoring Jim Hickey, Brian McLane, and Wegmans ariseinc.org/dinner
A MESSAGE TO OUR FRIENDS I am simply proud to work with the dedicated staff advocates of ARISE. I was reminded of that fact again on Friday, October 24. We held our annual Staff Development Day, and approximately 200 of our staff joined in the event.
Tom McKeown
Executive Director
Among the major presentations that day was one by Sarah Bowers who is a member of our talented mental health counseling staff. Sarah spoke in the room while we watched her younger sister Mary on video with a pre-recorded TED Talk. They encouraged us to “rethink disability,” which Mary describes as “uncelebrated human variation,” rather than as a “problem to be solved.” (The description reminds me of another by Agnes McCray who references “extravagant differences.”) I recommend Mary’s online TED Talk version (though you will miss out on Sarah’s contribution) as an absolutely powerful 15 minutes: http://goo.gl/OSWuYF While our staff do remarkable work, much of it is too often “uncelebrated.” I will draw attention to the staff in our Employment Department.

Darlene Klock, who leads our employment team, reported on recent activities for one month when eleven people obtained new jobs. They are employed at many different locations in both manufacturing and service companies, and they have a variety of roles. I imagine many of you, like me, value the opportunity to do meaningful work and earn a living. We are delighted to partner with employers looking for talented workers, and skilled individuals seeking to begin or continue their careers. Employment is a key component of independence, and that is something we all value. I wish I could share with you all of the stories of success that occur every day through the determination of people who connect with ARISE, the dedication of our fine staff, and the support of friends like you. Together we are changing the world.

A CONVERSATION WITH TOM MCKEOWN
REFLECTIONS ON THE PAST 12 YEARS AND WHAT YOUR SUPPORT MEANS FOR ARISE’S FUTURE After 12 years at ARISE, what have been some of your favorite moments? Treasured memories? One of my favorite moments happened at Dr. Weeks School where we provide mental health support. I was visiting the school when I watched an interaction in the hallway between one young boy and one of our therapists. You could sense trust and warmth between them. After the young boy left for class, the therapist shared that one year before, that same boy was actually considered one of the bullies in the school. Now, he’s adopted a new style and has become the protector of the kids who get bullied. What a powerful transformation. Another moment I recall happened earlier this year. I was speaking with the father of one of our riders at the Farm when I shared with him that our camp director recognized his daughter from a school where he had taught previously. Our camp director was stunned by the improvement in the young girl’s strength and ability to walk. The father looked at me and made two comments: “I thought that camp director looked familiar!”, and “My daughter’s strength gain is because of this place, because of what happens here at the Farm.” I also remember a treasured day a few years ago when I accompanied our Medicaid Service Coordinators (MSCs) in Oswego County on their visits. It was such a powerful experience. I met a family in a distant rural location in the county. Our worker was visiting to

make sure everything was going well. She helped me to recognize that this service is not about providing support from a distance - remotely in an office - but rather by sitting across from the family members in their own living room to review their needs and goals. At the end of the meeting, the mother presented our staff person with some gifts – little woven baskets – that she had made for the children of our staff member. I was moved to see their reciprocal relationship.
What do you think makes ARISE different? I always say that ARISE, first and foremost, is an agency organized and directed by people with disabilities. It’s who we are - as a board and as staff. That dimension adds a powerful quality for the organization that is unmatched. We are not about fostering pity but always about supporting empowerment. We exemplify in who we are that it is possible to act beyond perceived limitations. I think that quality makes us different and it’s a powerful one.
What gets you up in the morning each day and eager to come to work? Easy - it’s the people I work with. I am so appreciative of the work done by those who surround me every day - their desire to accomplish meaningful, good work and their deep commitment to our mission. We also have such supportive boards. At the recent strategic planning retreat, our consultants asked
MARIAN’S LOAN CLOSET EQUIPMENT LOAN CLOSET DEDICATION
It was a typical Monday morning when Marian Miller, our Equipment Loan Closet Coordinator, was called downstairs for an emergency. Much to her surprise, she was greeted by ARISE staff cheering and a new sign that proudly hung over the door to the Equipment Loan Closet that read “Marian’s Loan Closet.” We were pleased to recognize Marian for her decades of work by dedicating the equipment loan closet in her honor. For over 25 years, Marian’s tireless efforts have meant that thousands of people in the community could borrow vital medical equipment.
everyone present for a one-word description of ARISE. We heard “transformative,” “ visionary,” and “compassionate” among many fine descriptions. That was quite a moment as I listened. Both of our boards are so committed; I have received major support from these dedicated volunteers over the years.
Why are donations so important for the future of ARISE services? While ARISE has a strong history of reliance on steady government funding, times are changing. Program funding can be slashed quickly but needs remain constant. That’s why in 2011 the ARISE Board of Directors voted to create the ARISE Foundation with its sole purpose to foster relationships with friends and gain their support. Donations from those who appreciate the ARISE mission ensure that people with any type of disability will continue to have a place where they can access peers with tools that encourage their goals to live fulfilling and independent lives. ARISE is a place that is in the forefront of the fight for equal opportunities as we change hearts and minds. It is only through the generosity of our supporters that the future of ARISE services can be guaranteed for generations to come. We simply can’t do it without that generosity and shared commitment.

WHAT PLANNED GIVING REALLY MEANS Leave Your Legacy While Also Reaching Your Financial Goals By: Joe Hatfield
V.P., Oneida Wealth Management and ARISE Foundation Board Member If 80% of people in the US donate annually to charities, why is it that only an estimated 8% or 22 billion dollars of these donations are given through bequest or planned giving? People love to give to organizations that have enriched their life or the life of a loved one. So why don’t these same individuals name an organization in their will? In my experience the answer is lack of knowledge and awareness on the topic. Hopefully the following will help. Planned giving describes a wide variety of methods that allows donors to give to their chosen non-profit during their lifetimes and/or after their deaths. It also allows you to meet current income needs and provide for your heirs. Planned giving is a form of charitable giving that involves contributing your assets through a will and estate plans. A planned gift is a future gift to the non-profit that should enhance its mission and work. The typical planned gift is one that will provide charitable benefit upon the donor’s death (bequest). A donor may also make a planned gift to the non-profit while they’re alive and receive a charitable deduction immediately, but the non-profit will not receive any funds for its benefit until the donor passes away.
Planned gifts not only help organizations meet their longterm goals, they also may allow the donor to: • Make a personally significant gift, often larger than he or she thought possible. • Enjoy the satisfaction of providing the means for the non-profit to fulfill its mission. • Save on gift and estate taxes. • Reduce or avoid capital gains taxes. • Leave a legacy without giving up assets. There are many other benefits as well. It is surprisingly easy to arrange a planned gift. While more sophisticated gifts may require more care, many methods are quite straightforward. The easiest way to include the non-profit in an estate gift is through a will. Since 1979, ARISE has operated as a non-profit, community-based organization working to ensure that everyone, regardless of disability, has the power to make life choices and achieve their dreams. In 2011 the ARISE Foundation was formed to ensure that ARISE can continue to provide extraordinary services for people with any type of disability. ARISE and its foundation are worthy of taking a good look at when it comes to your planned giving. Remember, if 8% of donations represent approximately 22 billion dollars, imagine how much good could be done if that number doubled! IN OUR OWN WORDS Meet our Dynamic Employment Team
Every day, our employment team is coaching people on the job, polishing resumes, removing barriers to employment, and pounding the pavement to build partnerships with local businesses with one goal in mind - to help people with disabilities become self-sufficient by finding meaningful jobs in the community.
The most gratifying part of my job is... Mark DenDanto
ARISE Employment Consultant Helping others become productive members of society. My biggest accomplishment was assisting an individual find his career job which earns a salary of over $40K! However, what I like most about my job is educating businesses on all the positives about hiring individuals with disabilities.
Jennifer Schiebler
ARISE Employment Consultant Being a part of actual change in people’s lives. When you see someone get a job and maintain that job, and even move up within a company - it is a very rewarding experience. I think the biggest surprise throughout my career at ARISE has been the relationships I have built with the families I have worked with. I am amazed by the trust that families have put in me to help them make big vocational decisions for their loved ones. It’s an amazing feeling.
Krysten Manheimer ARISE Job Coach
Helping people get through their day and enjoy the work they do. I have grown so much by working with the people I work with. It has helped me push myself to do things I was always nervous to do. Seeing the people I work with accomplish their goals every day makes me want to do the same.
Taras Stashkiv
ARISE Employment Job Coach Having the opportunity to be part of an individual’s journey. To see someone’s hardships turn into success is both empowering and uplifting for the individual and everyone around them.

Emilie Clarke
ARISE Employment Consultant Seeing the gratification people have once they find a job and how happy it makes them feel to be a part of the work force. The biggest sense of accomplishment I get is when I am able to make those connections with employers, who may not have hired someone with a disability before, or who maybe didn’t understand what a reasonable accommodation is. And when it goes to the next step and then those employers call me when they have openings!
Nicole McGrath
ARISE Employment Consultant Interacting with people whether it be the individuals we serve or the employers we deal with. I also like being able to be in the field.
Spencer Horton
ARISE Employment Consultant The satisfaction I feel when someone knows they want to start working on goals like getting their own apartment, buying a car, and I assist them in finding a position so they can move forward in achieving those goals.
Teresa Gilbert
ARISE Employment Consultant Helping people find employment when they thought they could never do it. After being in this field for 15 years, I have had many accomplishments but I would have to say one of my favorites was helping one individual become a corrections officer when no one else believed in him. He had to overcome many obstacles - from learning how to read to being able to understand the testing from NYS without having accommodations.
CELEBRATING IN PULASKI OCTOBER MARKED 10 YEARS OF SERVICE
We were delighted in October to celebrate our 10 year anniversary of service in Pulaski. The Pulaski office was the second full-time satellite location ARISE opened in Oswego County. “ARISE is committed to ensuring that every person, regardless of disability, has the power to make their own life choices. The Pulaski location has been instrumental in helping us meet the growing needs for services for people with disabilities living in Northern Oswego County,” said Tom McKeown, ARISE Executive Director. All of ARISE’s Oswego County services, including Respite, Ramp Construction, Medicaid Service Coordination, Mental Health Services, and Advocacy are available at this location. Ernie Wheeler, former Pulaski Village Mayor said, “ARISE has been an asset to the clients in Northern Oswego County.” Wheeler, a former member of the ARISE Board of Directors and current member of our Oswego Advisory Committee, was critical in the initial formation of the Pulaski satellite office. “We are so grateful to be part of the Pulaski community and are proud to celebrate this special anniversary,” said McKeown.
SPECIAL THANKS Thanks to our community partners and friends, who have recently offered their support: • Westminster Presbyterian Church in Auburn for their generous donation to the Personal Care Bank. • The Central New York

WHY I SUPPORT ARISE
John Bosco, ARISE Foundation Board Member My family has been well-served by ARISE since we first connected for assistance on behalf of my son, Nicholas. With the knowledgeable and dedicated ARISE staff at our side, our son’s life has changed in many positive ways.
Oswego Ramp Program, the only program offering ramps in the county. There is a huge need for ramps and no government funding to support it, making the Ride for Ramps an important and worthwhile cause. Making it possible for people to get out of the house, so they are not trapped, is a BIG deal. I have heard stories of people who had not been out of their homes for years because they didn’t have a ramp and couldn’t afford one.

I was both surprised and excited that ARISE selected me to serve as part of the Foundation Board. I originally learned about ARISE through my employer, Haylor, Freyer & Coon, several years ago and have had the pleasure of working with Nancy and Tom on a few different occasions. They so impressed me with their passion, organization and the overall mission of ARISE that I am thrilled and honored to be part of this wonderful team. I am eager to lend my support to further their work of independence and access for all!

CELEBRATE YOUR LOVED ONES Make A Meaningful Gift That Gives Twice
Want to give something very special? As the holiday season approaches, consider giving a gift that will honor your loved ones while also making a difference for others. Tribute gifts can be made in memory of someone who has passed away or in honor of someone special to you. You can also recognize an important occasion or milestone, like an anniversary or birthday. The adult siblings in one family celebrate Christmas by making gifts to ARISE instead of each other. And if the person you are honoring has a particular interest, you can designate your gift so it supports their passion. To learn more about giving opportunities, contact Nancy Kern Eaton at 671-2903 or neaton@ariseinc.org.
