Our Mission To work with people of all abilities to create a fair and just community in which everyone can fully participate.
On September 13th ARISE will host its first annual Light up the Night 5k run/walk in the City of Oswego. This is a great event in that it brings together the elements of a run/walk and having a party. So what makes this event so special? Well, the event will start at dusk and everyone is encouraged to wear some lights. It may be as simple as one or two glow sticks, many glow sticks, glow body paint, or maybe glow in the dark clothing, neon items, or battery operated lights. We also encourage those that wish to come in costume! We will start at Breitbeck Park with a couple of “PARTY” dances. That’s right, we all get to dance before we take off. Then the runners take off first so that they can complete the entire 5k as a run, with no stops (a water station will be set up for on the way out and on the way back). The rest of us we will be making our way out to the halfway point at Fort Ontario where we will stop and have a couple more “PARTY” dances. After the dance we will return back to the park where …..you guessed it….we dance once more! This is an event that is designed to encourage everyone to participate and have a great time doing it. You will need to use your imagination and think outside of the box. Need help with ideas? Call Elizabeth Weimer at 342-4088 x227 who has agreed to be our “Imagination Consultant” and she will give you some direction. Need to register? You should do so NOW at www.ezracereg.com. We are one of the featured races and can also be found by date or location. If you need assistance with registration, please call Kris Rabideau at 342 -4088 x207 Want to be a corporate sponsor/business sponsor/private sponsor? Want to volunteer? Have general questions? Then please call Jim Karasek at 342-4088 x206 Let’s fill the park, let’s make the walk, and let’s light up the night!! How will YOU Light up the Night???

Back to School! Are You Ready? Yes, it’s that time again. Our children are going back to school! Both children and parents can often feel anxious or scared about going back to school. Thankfully, there are many tips parents can use to help their little ones become reacquainted with the idea of going back to school for another year. A week or two prior to the first day of school, slowly attempt to put the kids to bed earlier. Each night you can gradually begin putting the children to bed 5 minutes earlier than the night before. The first morning of school comes bright and early—especially to those kids who like to go to sleep late. Establishing routine is very important for our children. After three months of freedom, it is often hard to have them readjust back into an 8-hour school day. As the end of the summer nears, attempt to get healthy foods for breakfast and lunch. Talk to your children about what he/she would like to take for lunch. Also, parents can try allowing their children participate in choosing their school supplies. Shopping for school supplies and clothes will remind them that the first day of school is fast approaching. Allow the children to pack their backpacks full of those supplies and choose an outfit for the first day back to school. Establishing routines prior to the first day of school helps build confidence and may eliminate first day of school melt downs. If your child is entering a new school, it may be a good idea to visit the school prior to the first day, and if possible, meet their teacher. In order to reduce anxiety, it may also help to become familiar with the areas of the building. Finally, in order for our children to do well in school, it is important to maintain open communication with their teachers. A healthy relationship between parents and teachers is essential in achieving student success. Happy First Day of School and Good Luck!!
