Int’l Day Of Persons With Disabilities International Day of Persons with Disability December 3, 2016 Did you know that since 1992 the United Nations has designated December 3 as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD)? This day is celebrated around the world with special events to raise awareness about the talents, gifts, and achievement of persons with disabilities. You can find more information about the events on the UN website at www.un.org. The observance this year coincides with the 10 th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which has been signed by 160 nations and is one of the most quickly and widely ratified international treaties put forth by the United Nations. What does this mean? It means that all these countries pledge to combat stereotypes and prejudices, and promote awareness of the capabilities of persons with disabilities. Did you know that persons with disabilities are the world’s largest minority? According to information published by the U.N., 1 billion people in the world have some form of disability, that is 1in 7. More than 100 million of them are children. In countries with a life expectancy over 70, such as the US, individuals spend on average about 8 years living with disabilities. Did you know that individuals with disabilities across the globe are more likely to experience violence than those who do not have a disability? According to information published by the U.N., risk factors that place persons with disabilities at a higher risk of violence include stigma, discrimination, and ignorance about disability, as well as a lack of support for those who care for them. It is well known that when barriers to inclusion are lifted the entire community benefits. ARISE continues its work to improve inclusion, educate the public about disability issues and celebrate the accomplishments of individuals with disabilities; some examples are the advocacy for equal access in housing, employment, and education; the inclusive playground ARISE at the Farm in Chittenango, which makes it fun for children and parents of all abilities to access the equipment together; presentations by our staff to social groups and businesses to increase awareness and knowledge about disabilities; and the UNIQUE art and literary magazine and exhibit. The most effective way to change attitudes is through positive personal experiences. We see this over and over again as more people in the community meet individuals associated with ARISE as volunteers, shoppers, artists, actors, employees and community members. Let’s celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities! ~ Sabine Ingerson (Information and statistics referenced from www.un.org) Page 3

Habilitation Department The Pratt House is having a tree contest and individuals in our Habilitation Program spent several days making decorations for their tree. Our ARISE Education Advocate Vicki Affinati participates with the Fulton High School class, who decorated a tree as well. (The two trees are in different categories and will not be competing against one another) All your votes would be very much appreciated.

The Pratt House (Historical Museum) 177 South First Street Fulton, NY 13069 The museum is open every day from December 1st through the 9th from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM, with the exception of December 4th when they will be closed. The voting will stop at 1:00 PM Friday the 9th. There is no admission to see the parade of trees and vote. Please show your support for ARISE, the Fulton High School class, and The Pratt House!

The Holiday Season brings us to the colder weather months of the year. We all experience the increased cost of our National Grid bills. Did you know that National Grid offers a Budget Plan, which is designed to help lessen a huge monthly bill of increased cost during weather months. Here are some frequently asked questions and responses from National Grid regarding the Budget Plan. What is the Budget Plan? Our Budget Plan allows you to even out your monthly energy costs. Visit Your Account at National Grid for the online Budget Plan enrollment form. Are there any special fees to enroll in the Budget Plan? There is no cost to enroll in the Budget Plan. Can I leave the Budget Plan before the end of the year? Yes. You may leave the Budget Plan at any time. The difference between what you've paid at the time you withdraw and your actual service charges will be added or subtracted from your next regular service bill. Why did my budget amount change? Actual usage is reviewed every six months, and your budget may be adjusted accordingly. These changes are made to prevent you from having a large balance or credit due at the end of your Budget Plan year. How do you determine my Budget Plan amount? We determine your monthly budget payment amount by looking at your energy use over the past 12 months. This annual consumption is then divided by 12 to help us determine your monthly budget amount. Actual usage is reviewed every six months, and your budget may be adjusted accordingly. The twelfth month of the Budget Plan is 'Settlement Month.' If you paid more than you actually used over the plan year, we will reduce that month's bill to reflect your overcharge. If you did not pay enough to cover usage for the year, you can choose to either pay the amount over the next 12 months or pay it as one lump sum in the twelfth month. If you are interested in applying for the budget plan or have questions, Please contact a National Grid customer service representative (1-800-642-4272) directly and give them your account information, which you can find on your previous bill (or by giving your name and the phone number you have on file with the utility company). Have a warm, safe, and Happy Holiday!
