Fall Barn Dance

Saturday, October 24, 2015 ARISE at the Farm Join us for the costume contest, music, dancing, and more! ariseinc.org/events

A MESSAGE TO OUR FRIENDS We have certainly had a busy summer! ARISE & Ride for Ramps in Oswego was delightful, with many motorcyclists, runners, and others. We are able to do this great work of ramp construction because of this support.

Tom McKeown

Executive Director

ARISE & Ride at the Farm included scores of folks who rode cycles and lots of other wheeled vehicles. So much fun, especially because our BEAUTIFUL AND FULLY ACCESSIBLE PLAYGROUND was ready for use. The UNIQUE reception at THE home of art in the region, the Everson Museum, provided us with the annual opportunity to honor the skills of artists and writers with disabilities. You can visit the exhibit until September 20th. We celebrated the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act in various ways. • In Auburn, we combined the event with our very fine annual conference in June. (I must note that the brilliant keynote speaker was my cousin Kayla.) • In Oswego, our highly-regarded director, Sabine Ingerson, addressed the County Legislature. • In Syracuse and Oneida, we conducted rallies and then marched in numbers.

2

Each of these events provided us with opportunities to spread the word about the values of the independent living movement fostered by ARISE as an organization directed and operated by people with disabilities. Our new, fully accessible playground at the Farm resulted from the dedication of time and talent, as well as the financial contributions, of many contributors. Wegmans led the way so many years ago at Onondaga Lake Park, and we (with Wegmans support among many others) built a playground that includes the latest in inclusive recreation. All families throughout the region are able to use this excellent playground; siblings and friends of children with disabilities can play with them. As our ARISE Foundation Board Chair, Edward Cook, says, it’s a “playground for all”. Thank you for making these events and the playground’s existence possible.

The 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Signs during the marches included sayings like “See Act was July 26th. ARISE & Ski Call for Volunteers

Giving that Goes Beyond

As the leaves start to change, do you start daydreaming about the upcoming ski season? The crisp mornings, sparkling snow on the ground and carving clean, circular arcs into the freshly groomed slopes. For many people with disabilities, the joys of skiing are dreams at best. Our ARISE & Ski Program can bring those dreams to reality.

We are always humbled when someone wants to leave a legacy beyond their lifetime by making a gift to ARISE. It is wonderful when a friend’s gift demonstrates their commitment to creating a world in which every person, regardless of disability, has the chance to live a full and independent life in such an impactful way.

Our ability to provide adaptive winter sports to the community is directly related to the number of volunteers we have, so your participation can truly have an impact. To learn more, contact Richelle Maki, Program Coordinator, at ski@ariseinc.org or 671-3094.

Over the last several months, we have learned of two such gifts. Though the individuals wish to remain anonymous, we want to express our gratitude to them for their strong belief in our ability to carry out their wishes and continue their impact in the world.

UNIQUE ARTWORK SHINES AT THE EVERSON Exhibit Opening at the Everson Celebrates Local Artists and Writers Hundreds of people, with smiles on their faces, joined us at the Everson Museum of Art for the debut of UNIQUE 2015. Artist Joseph Rufo may have had the biggest smile when he walked in to a round of applause from the guests and saw that his piece, Fox at Night, was featured on the magazine’s cover. Every year, we receive many more submissions than we can include in the magazine. Our amazing Editorial Board members reviewed each of the 108 pieces submitted and selected the 58 visual and literary works included in the fifteenth edition. The artists and writers ranging in age from 13 to 80, and living in six counties, submitted work. In her remarks in the UNIQUE magazine, Elizabeth Dunbar, President & CEO of the Everson and a UNIQUE Editorial Board Member, said, “While the language of art - colors, shapes, and forms - binds us, it also reminds us that we all see the world differently through the lens of our own experience. And in that we are all unique, we are also all the same.” We are so proud to feature these outstanding creative works and are incredibly grateful to the Everson Museum of Art and all of the UNIQUE sponsors who make this publication and exhibition possible.

arise & ride at the farm Fantastic Day of Fun

It’s hard to believe this year marked the fifth anniversary of our ARISE & Ride at the Farm event! What a wonderful day it was! Hundreds of friends came out to enjoy cycling, walking, wheeling and playing! Plus, everyone was treated to a sneak peak of our new fully-accessible playground! Cyclists started the morning with the 25- and 12-mile scenic rides around Chittenango. Friends and family came together, formed teams, and made their way around the paved track at the Farm while participating in fun activities along the way during the Walk & Wheel-A-Thon. Lots of folks helped to make this event possible, including our sponsors, great planning committee, incredible friends from BNY Mellon, and other volunteers. We are grateful to dedicated partners like Tops Friendly Markets, who donate all of the food, and Mark Perrin from the bikery, who again provided SAG support, Michael E. Mobile Sound, for making it more fun with music and announcements, and Ed Falkowski, the Syracuse Police Department, and the Madison County Sheriff’s Department for their assistance with the ride! You all make it possible for magic to happen at the Farm all year long! We are already excited about next year and hope you will join us on July 24th, 2016!

PLAYGROUND PARK

PROJECT

Playground for all complete Accessible Playground a Reality

We couldn’t be happier to announce that our brand new, fully-accessible playground is up and has been filled with kids! With generous support from so many local foundations, companies, and individuals, we were able to turn the dream of a playground that everyone can use into a reality. One of the most expensive parts of the playground was also vital to completely inclusive play. Thanks to the fully rubberized surface, wheelchairs can easily navigate around the grounds. Ramps provide access to all of the play equipment, including the single slides, triple slide, and the rocking ship! We have swings to accommodate all ages and abilities, a climbing tunnel, a ten spin, a covered pavilion and more! This playground gives people of all abilities the chance to share in the fun together! This was a big undertaking, and we are so proud that it has come to fruition. So many people worked to make this happen, and we are extremely grateful to everyone who shared time, energy and resources. Most importantly, you embrace the belief that every person should be able to experience recreation, fun, and adventure! We hope that you get the chance to head out to the Farm soon. We know you’ll have fun!

Oswego farm camp Days of Fun for Adults and Children

Once again this year, adults and kids from Oswego had the opportunity to come to Camp at ARISE at the Farm! They were able to take part in all of the Farm Camp activities including tie-dying, riding horses, cycling, fishing and the ropes course; and they got to spend time on the new playground! Everyone loved seeing the animals, especially Dazzle, a goat who was brought to the Farm after losing parts of her ears and her hind feet due to frostbite. Did folks have fun at Farm Camp? One child’s mother said that her daughter “was not only able to socialize but she experienced the farm with her peers. Without the farm program, she would not have had that experience or felt the freedom to be a ‘kid’.”

auburn conference Our Differences, Our Strength

Every year, our wonderful team in Auburn puts on a conference filled with learning, networking, and fun. They did it again this year, and it was even more special as we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the ADA and presented a posthumous award to Jim Kibbe, longtime advocate and friend. The audience was welcomed by Auburn Mayor Michael Quill and inspired by Jonathan Dunbar’s singing of the national anthem. Attendees chose from workshops covering a wide array of topics, including social networking, yoga, healthy sexuality and relationships, pathways to employment, L’Arche, cognition and aging, and stories from Otsego Academy’s first year. Keynote speaker Kayla McKeon gave a terrific speech in which she shared her stories of success and demonstrated that she has not been defined by any boundaries. Tom McKeown was thrilled to hear his cousin (last name spelled differently) present at the conference.

ARise & ride for ramps

A Successful Event Helps Brings Ramps to Those in Needs Runners, bicyclists, and motorcycle riders came together in May to raise money for the ARISE Ramp Program in Oswego County. The day began with a 5K walk/run, followed by the motorcycle ride around scenic Oswego, and the bicycle ride on the Oswego Speedway! Following the activities, participants were treated to a delicious chicken barbeque from Lighthouse Lanes, as well as raffle prizes, bounce-houses, music, and more family-friendly activities. The support we receive for ARISE & Ride for Ramps makes it possible for people with disabilities to return to their community, rejoin their families, and live independently at home. The money raised will allow us to buy materials to build ramps for people who cannot afford one. We do not receive any government money for the Ramp Program, so this all happens through the generosity of caring community members. “Imagine being confined in your home, unable to go out into the community, or even just to your mailbox. This is the reality for many families, according to Jim Karasek, ARISE Manager of Independent Living Services in Oswego. Our great friends at G&C Foods donated $20,000 to our Ramp Program. We also received support from the following sponsors:

HAYLOR, FREYER & COON Volunteers spruce up the Farm

Haylor, Freyer & Coon is a company that believes in giving back, and we are grateful for their support all year long. This year, they chose ARISE at the Farm for their big project. When these great folks decide to do something, amazing things happen! We are fortunate to have Pat Contant Clary serve on our ARISE Foundation Board, and she and sixty of her colleagues did great work. This large project, planned over a number of months, included meetings with the landscape architect, acquiring all of the materials, and spending three days doing the work. The result: two beautiful rain gardens and three new trees near the playground, as well as newly painted sheds, and flowers planted around the Farm. We join our friends from Haylor in thanking partners who supported this project: Kinsella Quarries, Sollecito Landscaping Nursery, Chuck Hafner’s Farmers Market & Garden Center, Pittsburgh Paints, Purcell’s Wallpaper & Paint Co., and P & L Landscaping. We extend a very special thank you to Ray Carney and his firm, Hawthorne Property Services, for donating their time and equipment to make this possible. We are so grateful to the wonderful folks at Haylor, Freyer & Coon for sharing their time and talent!

Novelis

When Kristen Smith, then vice chair of the ARISE Foundation Board, invited colleagues to join her in a day of service at ARISE at the Farm, many hands went up. With hammers, crowbars, landscaping tools, and lots of energy, they removed rotted boards from our horse sheds and put up new boards. They also did some much-needed landscaping and helped groom the horses. We are thankful for everything these terrific friends did to make a difference at the Farm!

Novelis Employees Give Their All With great leadership by Brian Carpenter, he and colleagues from Novelis helped us in a big way this summer. They spent a weekend building ramps in Oswego County and a Saturday at ARISE at the Farm tearing down old boards and putting new ones up on some of the horse sheds. To make it even better, the company supported their efforts by making a contribution to ARISE based upon the number of volunteer hours given by employees! We applaud these great friends who spent their time off working very hard to help others. 11

NATIONAL DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH By: Michael Theobald National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is meant to create awareness for people with disabilities that are, or want to be, in the work force. The NDEAM began with an act of Congress in 1945, which originally only lasted for the first week of October, and was initially called National Employment of the Physically Handicapped Week. In 1962, “physically” was removed from the name. Then, in 1988, the week was expanded into a month and the name was changed to “National Disability Employment Awareness Month. In the past few decades there have been programs created to help people with disabilities find and/or maintain work. A large program that offers these services in Central New York is Adult Career and Continuing Education Services-Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR). ACCES-VR offers transitional services for people with disabilities that are in high school, and for people up to 25 years of age. For people with disabilities and who are of working age, ACCES-VR offers vocational

rehabilitation, subsidies and tuition assistance for those that attend college, to assist with the cost of books and other college fees, plus a full range of independent services, among other things. After attending the ACCES-VR orientation session and receiving a referral from them, ARISE, or another employment consultant group, can work with you to identify your employment goals, find a job, and provide support to help you retain the job. They can assist by: helping to complete job applications, write resumes, develop interview skills, and connecting people to local jobs. Once you start a job, ARISE provides continuing services to ensure you maintain employment in that specific job. Every person with a disability that is willing to work and has some ability to work should have the opportunity to do so, not only for financial stability, but because a job is also good for mental health. These programs have been put in place to assure that the opportunity is there, and National Disability Employment Awareness Month is a great way to support what is being done for the community that can benefit from these services.
