Neighbors Helping Neighbors Join us on May 31st for ARISE & Ride for Ramps Finally, the nice summer weather is here and we are all eager to get outside, work in our yard, fish, or just play outside. How would you feel, though, if you could not get out of your house? Some of our neighbors are not able to get past their front door. Because of a mobility impairment, the front steps of their house can make their home feel more like a prison than a source of comfort. Right now, there are already over sixty people on our waiting list for ramps. They are all counting on volunteers and our fundraising efforts to regain their independence. Some are waiting in a rehabilitation facility to hear the news that a ramp is being built for them. Please help us respond to their needs and participate in the Ride for Ramps fundraiser at Lighthouse Lanes on May 31st . There are many ways you can get involved:
Participate in the 5K run which starts at 10:00 am Ride in the motorcycle ride which starts at 10:30 am Give a pledge to a child who participates in the one-mile bike ride which begins at 11:00 am Bring the family for the chicken BBQ Buy tickets for the raffle (you can even win a bike donated by Murdock’s Bicycles & Sports!) Come out and enjoy the many games and activities Tell others about the event
If you cannot attend, your donations to the ARISE Foundation designated for “Ride for Ramps” will be gladly accepted at any time. If you and some of your friends would like to get involved building ramps, please contact Jim Karasek at 342-4088 ext. 206 or jkarasek@ariseinc.org.

MSC Blog Hello All, My name is Marjorie Yerdon, a new Medicaid Service Coordinator with ARISE. I have worked with ARISE since October of 2012 as a Direct Service Professional. Because of my new baby boy that was born in the end of October, I’ve become more aware of the warning systems and alarms in my home that help us stay safe. Having a baby really makes me want my home to be safe and it’s critical to replace alarm batteries while also keeping buzzers, beepers, and warnings to a minimum in non-emergency situations. Nobody wants to wake a sleeping baby for an old battery, I know that. I have smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in my home and keep them up to date with fresh batteries. We all know what smoke detectors are for, but what is a carbon monoxide detector? “Carbon monoxide detectors sound an alarm that serves as an early warning of invisible but toxic gasses in a structure. In January 2008, according to the Martinsville Virginia Bulletin, a free carbon monoxide detector alerted a family to the presence of carbon monoxide gas. The family, including one young child and one infant, escaped the home unharmed.” (1) Every so often I test the smoke detector by cooking something just a little too long, and wouldn’t you know it, the alarms still work. All kidding aside, it is a very serious device and should you really need it, you definitely want it to work. If it is hard for you to remember to change the batteries in your detectors, it’s a good policy change the batteries when you change you clocks twice a year for daylight savings time. So, how can you get a FREE smoke detector or carbon monoxide monitor for your home? Just call your local volunteer fire department and ask them! Often, they will have free local giveaways. They can also tell you if an event is coming up so you know when and where to go. If they have some on hand, they may be able to give them to you even if they don’t have an event planned. It is always good to get to know your local firemen. I hope these little tips help you to keep you and yours safe, and I hope you enjoy each day as the weather gets better and better this summer. http://www.ehow.com/facts_8054315_can-carbon-monoxide-detectors.html
