Ride For Ramps We are looking forward to seeing everyone at ARISE & Ride for Ramps on Saturday June 3 rd. Latest additions are a new band and the super-sized bounce house. Our band is Crazy Neighbors and we are pleased to host them for your enjoyment. We think you will enjoy the variety of music they play. Our bounce house is actually an obstacle course and the young ones will have a great time with this addition. As usual we will have a choice of chicken or pulled pork for meal choices. Registration will open at 9:00 AM at Lighthouse Lanes. The 5K will be run on the speedway and will begin at 9:30 AM. The motorcycle ride will depart at 10:00 AM and will be a scenic route to FX Harley-Davidson in Adams and back. Thank you for putting us on your schedule and we look forward to seeing you. If you have any questions please call us at (315) 342-4088 Jim Karasek X206, Jim Cronk X211, or Josh Solazzo X213 Thank you for being part of our 2017 event and efforts to build ramps this summer.

MSC Blog Jane Peter Medicaid Service Coordinator Oswego
It’s June and it’s time to explore Oswego County. Did you know that there are over 200 miles of walking trails throughout the county? They crisscross over State Forests, Wildlife Managements, and State Parks. Some trails are marked and some are not marked. In our county we have such a wide variety of beautiful grounds. There is the Salmon River Falls located in Orwell or you could visit the Winona State park located East in the county. You could visit Chateagay near Orwell. Granby has Curtis Gale Wildlife and also Great Bear Recreation. If you live near Central Square you could visit 3 Mile Bay- Big Bay Wildlife Management. If you live near the Sandy Creek area you could visit Deer Marsh Wildlife Management. In Oswego there are trails at the Rice Creek Biological Field Station as well as Independence Park Trail. If you are feeling like a bit of history you could also stop at Fort Ontario. Did you know that there are several bird watching stations throughout the county? You might even be able to see a Bald Eagle, Osprey, Red tail hawks or possibly see or hear a loon. Just stop by Derby Hill located near Mexico Point. You could also see a variety of birds by the lake or by the canal way. Redfield Reservoir also has a variety of birds to see. Did you know that there are several State Parks throughout the county that are free to individuals that have their NY State Access Pass? (By the way your MSC can help you apply for the free pass.) Selkirk Shores, Sandy Island Beach, Sunset Bay Park, as well as Fair Haven Beach and Sodus Point to name a few. Did you know that there is Canalling around the Oswego River Canal? What is Canalling? Well, it is: boating, fishing, and walking down the beautiful Oswego Canal’s paved trails. I especially like sitting by the locks and watching the boats, both large and small, go up and down the waterway. It is a sight to see! Sometimes when you look out onto Lake Ontario, you may even catch a glimpse of a big freighter or a sailboat. So you can see that there are lots of opportunities for fun this summer throughout the whole county. Get out there and enjoy the beauty of Oswego County this summer. Community Habilitation Department We would like to send out our heartfelt congratulations to Crystal Bracy and Dustin Hanley. They both have accepted a position within our agency as Medicaid Service Coordinators. We appreciate everything that they have done in the Community Habilitation Department; they have both brought great talents and passion for the people that we serve and work with. Dustin has introduced many of our individuals to the world of music and started up a guitar group. We are hopeful that this will continue. Crystal assisted in bringing the Book Club back and encouraged our individuals to be creative and enjoy literacy on many levels, including acting. We wish them the best of luck on their new journey within our agency!
ARISE Receives Accreditation On May 5th, ARISE received a three year accreditation by the Council on Quality and Leadership (CQL). This award confirms that we embrace person-centered solutions to improve the quality of life for people receiving services and supports. As an Independent Living Center our philosophy has always been based on being consumer-directed, so when we decided to apply for the accreditation we knew CQL’s guiding principles and ours were very close. The process of going through the very lengthy self-assessment has been very helpful and so were the three focus groups we hosted, which were facilitated by the members of the accreditation team. Several parents participated in the parent focus group which was held in Oswego and I appreciate that you took time to share things that you value and things we can improve on. Some of the comments shared with us at the end of the accreditation visit were that our staff members listen, are accessible, ask about concerns; and that the agency provides a variety of opportunities, encourages the development of talents and provides services for the whole family, such as Sibshops. Another topic was that we are strong advocates. One of the suggestions was to avoid the use of acronyms. I will certainly try to work on that. ARISE is committed to work with CQL over the next three years to maintain the accreditation and to implement the Personal Outcome Measures (POMS). Through this interview process we hope to become even better at making sure every person’s needs and dreams are being taken into account as services are planned and implemented. Sabine
ARISE & Health Oswego Healthy Miles is a fully-accessible, one-mile course throughout downtown Oswego that people are encouraged to walk, wheel, or run. Oswego Healthy Miles will have eight signs throughout the trail to keep participants on the right path. Students in the Digital Media program at the Center for Instruction, Techonology, and Innovation (CiTi) designed the logo for the initiative, which is featured on each sign. 5
