Legislative Day in Albany Written by: Sabine Ingerson Have you ever dreamed of visiting the Assembly Chamber in Albany and sitting at the desk of one of its members? Well, Roger Pullen, one of our dedicated members of the SelfAdvocacy Council, had the time of his life when Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney invited him to sit at her desk in the Assembly during our Center’s visit on the Legislative Day. She showed him the binder with bills to be voted on that day and explained how the voting system worked. Our annual trip to Albany to meet with legislators on the New York State Association on Independent Living’s Advocacy Day started out at six o’clock in the morning on February 25. Jim Karasek, Manager of Independent Living Services, Danielle Fox, Kris Rabideau, Kristin Drumm, Roger Pullen and Michael Moss and I represented ARISE. Our first appointment was with staff from Senator Ritchie’s office. Unfortunately Senator Ritchie was not in town as the Senate was not in session. We explained the concerns faced by individuals with disabilities such as the lack of accessible housing, employment and transportation as well as the need for more funding for community-based services. At a meeting with Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush we thanked him for co-sponsoring a bill that would establish a tax credit for the employment of people with disabilities. The tax credit would result in an incentive for small businesses to hire individuals with disabilities. Any support given to improve the very low employment rate of individuals with disabilities is a step in the right direction. We also met with Assemblyman Will Barclay. He is a co-sponsor of the bill that would require all housing built with public funding be constructed using “visitable” design which means that they have a no-step entrance, a wheelchair accessible bathroom on the first floor, and wide enough doorways. Assemblyman Bob Oak‘s office is in the Capitol building, a beautiful historic structure. He remembered our team from last year as well as many of the issues we had previously discussed. We told him of ARISE’s merger with Options for Independence in Auburn since Cayuga County is part of his district. Our visit in Albany ended with our group being welcomed by the Speaker of the House, Sheldon Silver, during a session of the Assembly. Page 1

MSC Blog Written by: Stephanie Pomerville Cold and flu season is upon us once again. It seems as though many people get sick when the seasons begin to change; however, it is not the seasons changing that make people ill, it’s the germs. Germs are not necessarily a bad thing, the more you are around them, the more your body is used to fighting them. That’s not to say you should have people sneeze on you or intentionally infect yourself in any way. By practicing good hygiene, it is easier to maintain a good balance between getting rid of bad germs, and keeping the good ones you have. By doing this you’ll have a better chance of staying healthy all year! One way to achieve good hygiene is by washing your hands after you handle meat, use the restroom, or any other time you think you are around a lot of germs at once. It’s also a good idea to carry hand sanitizer with you when you go to public places such as the grocery store or Laundromat. It’s also important to maintain a healthy life style. Eating healthy and getting enough sleep are two very important elements in staying healthy. To eat healthy, make sure you get enough servings of the food groups. Below is a chart to show how many servings of each food group you should try to get each day. Exercise is also very important. It is hard for people to exercise in the winter as most people don’t want to get out of their homes and trudge through snow just to go to the gym or for a walk. Try doing jumping jacks while a commercial break is on television or running in place for a few minutes — anything to get your heart rate up. Lastly, maintaining a clean environment is also important in staying healthy. A good rule of thumb is to do the light work during the week such as dishes, some laundry, wiping down counter tops, and vacuuming. You can complete the rest of the cleaning on the weekends such as dusting and moping. With these small tips on maintaining a healthy life style, along with regular doctor visits, you’ll be sure to have a better chance of beating the flu this year!
