Our Mission To work with people of all abilities to create a fair and just community in which everyone can fully participate.
Expressing Our Thanks By: Sabine Ingerson Thanksgiving is coming up in just a few weeks. It is a time to reflect on this past year and the many people that have touched our lives — whether it was through kindness, time spent with us, or services and supports. I am thankful for the increasing number of people who have put their trust in ARISE for assistance, be it through information and referral, advocacy for housing or education, ramps, or benefits advisement. The United Way of Greater Oswego recently created a video produced by Allain Daigle that features a thankful couple who received a ramp through our Oswego County Ramp Program. For the first time in years, the couple was finally able get out of their house to go shopping, an activity most of us engage in without much preparation. You can watch the video at ariseinc.org/category/news/. I am thankful for the caring staff who provide personal care. They are the ones our participants rely on to get ready for the day. A special thanks to Cheryl Arnold, our manager of the CDPAP department, who is often referred to as an angel because she is always willing to lend an ear when people are looking for a friendly voice on the other end of the phone. I am thankful for our Habilitation, Respite, and Employment Departments for their efforts to help people increase their independence. The creativity of the staff, especially those who work in the homes and in comunity settings, is amazing. Page 1
I am thankful for the Medicaid Service Coordinators. They, too, provide guidance and assistance on all of the services available in our community. I have heard over and over again how much these staff members mean to the families and individuals they serve. I am thankful for the staff who provide counseling as well as lead our support and recreational groups. It is at those meetings that I have experienced much laughter, encouragment, and acceptance among the participants. I am thankful for the administrative staff whose actions make ARISE services possible in the front office and behind the scenes. I am thankful for the Advisory Committee in Oswego, the Board of Directors, and the Foundation who, along with our Exective Director, Tom McKeown, not only share their ideas for future projects and collaborations but also provide direction and oversight. I am thankful for our community. Many people have donated items for the Thanksgiving baskets which will be distributed by Catholic Charities, Human Concerns, and many other organizations. If you would like a basket, please check with your MSC or coordinator so they can help you apply. Let us take time to share our thanks and please accept mine. Thank you!

Breast Cancer Awareness ARISE staff recently participated in the 4th Annual Oswego Human Pink Ribbon in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Women with disabilities often face additional barriers to health services. We are proud to reach out to thousands of women through our free Breast Health Awareness & Outreach Program funded by Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Through this program, we’re able to help women overcome barriers so that they can receive the care that they need. To learn more, visit our website at ariseinc.org.

MSC Blog With the upcoming holidays I thought it would be helpful to give a list of places that are offering free holiday meals and 3. food baskets.
Catholic Charities is having their annual food basket giveaway for Thanksgiving. Applications are being accepted for Thanksgiving until November 8th. The baskets can be picked up on November 18, 19, and 20th. Catholic Charities will let you know what time.
Bring to a boil and immediately reduce heat to bring the stock to a bare simmer or just below a simmer. (If you would like to have a clear stock, do not bring the stock to a boil. Keep the stock below a simmer, as the more you simmer, the more cloudy the stock will be.) Skim off any foam that may float to the surface of the stock.
4. Add salt and pepper (about 1 tsp. of salt and 1/2 tsp. of pepper– it depends on how big your turkey is. You can always add more to the soup later.)
La Parrilla in Oswego is holding their second annual free dinner including turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing from 11am until 2pm on Thanksgiving Day. La Parrilla is located on 118 W 2nd St. in Oswego.
The State Street United Methodist Church in Fulton is having free Thanksgiving Day dinners from 12-2pm. They are located on 33 South 3rd St. in Fulton.
and any giblets (except liver) that haven't been used already. Add a yellow onion that has been quartered, some chopped carrots, parsley, thyme, a bay leaf, celery tops, and some peppercorns.
The Syracuse Rescue Mission is offering Thanksgiving Dinners from 11am until 12:30pm at 148 Gifford St., Syracuse.
5. Cook for at least 4 hours, uncovered or partially uncovered (so the stock reduces), occasionally skimming off any foam that comes to the surface. To help maintain a steady, even heat, you can cook the stock in a 180-200°F oven. 6. Remove the bones and veggies and strain the stock, ideally through a very fine mesh strainer. 7. If making stock for soups in the future, you may want to reduce the stock by cooking it longer, uncovered, at a bare simmer, to make it more concentrated and easier to store. Making the Turkey Soup
As important as it is to spend time with friends 1. With your stock already made, add chopped carrots, onions, and celery in equal parts. Add and family during the holidays it is also a good time to some parsley and a couple cloves of garlic. Add volunteer to help others. Many places are looking for seasoning (poultry seasoning, sage, thyme, volunteers on Thanksgiving to serve dinners. marjoram and/or a bouillon cube). After Thanksgiving dinner there will be 2. Cook at a bare simmer until the vegetables are leftovers so I wanted to give you a few ideas for cooked through. (Or you can sauté the healthy recipes. Turkey sandwiches the next day are vegetables first in a little fat rendered from the always delicious with lettuce and tomato served on soup and add the vegetables back to the soup whole wheat bread, a pita pocket, or in a wrap. right before serving). You can also add rice, Another idea is to use any roasted potatoes or sweet noodles, or even leftover mashed potatoes (or potatoes with an omelet for breakfast the next day. not, if you want a low carb version). Another idea for leftovers is Turkey Soup (recipe from simplerecipes.com). 3. Take some of the remaining turkey meat you reserved earlier, shred it into bite sized pieces, and add to the soup. You may also want to add some chopped tomatoes (either fresh or canned). Add salt and pepper to taste. Sometimes a dash or two of Tabasco gives the soup a nice little kick.
Making the Turkey Stock 1. Remove all the usable turkey meat from the turkey carcass to save for making sandwiches later or for adding to the soup. 2. Break up the leftover bones of the carcass a bit, so they don't take up as much room in the pot. Put the leftover bones and skin into a large stock pot and cover with cold water by an inch. Add any drippings that weren't used to make gravy,
I hope everyone has a happy and safe Thanksgiving!
