ARISE Offers New Representative Payee Program By: Sabine Ingerson I am delighted to announce that Jen Stanard has accepted the position of Representative Payee/Benefits Advisor. Jen has worked for our agency as an Advocate and has provided information and referral services for nine years. She will be working at our Oswego office, as well as at the Department of Social Services. What is a Representative Payee? A Representative Payee is an individual or organization appointed by the Social Security Administration to receive Social Security; and/or SSI benefits for individuals who are unable to manage, or direct someone else to manage his or her money. The main responsibility of a Representative Payee is to use the individual’s benefits to pay for his or her current and foreseeable needs, and to properly save any benefits not needed for basic living expenses. Your Representative Payee receives your monthly benefits on your behalf and must use the money to pay for your current needs including housing, utilities, food, medical and dental expenses, personal care items, and clothing. After those expenses are paid, your Payee can use the rest of the money to pay any past-due bills you may have, support your dependents or provide entertainment funds to you. What are the advantages of having a Representative Payee through ARISE? We are an Independent Living Center, and we have staff and programs available to help people with disabilities live independently. ARISE can offer financial guidance, trainings, and referrals to other programs that offer assistance. We would like to remind you that if you receive SSI payments, effective October 1st of this year, those payments will be split into two separate payments/times each month that you receive them. YOU WILL STILL RECEIVE THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY EACH MONTH, but it will be split between the two payments. This is an ongoing change from October 1st going forward. Please be aware that you might have to make arrangements for rent, utilities, etc. If you have questions, concerns, or need assistance in understanding this new process, please call us. Once again, this only pertains to SSI payments, and the change is only a split of funds into twice a month that it will come to you. You will not see a change in your monthly total. Fulton Community School Events Events to be held at the Fulton Junior High School Tuesday 10/7: Keeping Children Safe in Our Community at 6:30 -8 pm (Cafeteria) - Child Advocacy Center will raise our awareness of risks and provide tools that every adult can use to keep children safe in our community. Thursday 10/23: Sleep and Your Child: Patterns, Problems and Possibilities at 6:30 -8pm (Cafeteria & Room 4) - Child Psychiatrist, Dr. Marija Mutabdzic, from Oswego Hospital Child and Family Services, will discuss with parents the importance of sleep, back to school transitioning, children's sleep problems and how to help. Children will have their own presentation where therapists will answer questions, create a craft, and teach relaxation techniques. Snacks will be provided for both groups.
Disability Etiquette These tips are things to keep in mind when talking to people with disabilities. Never just assume that you know what a person with a disability wants or needs.
If offering assistance, always wait for a response and then follow the individual’s instructions.
When talking to a person with a disability, talk directly to that individual, not the friend, companion, or Sign Language interpreter who may be present.
Respect all assistive devices as personal property. Unless given permission, do not move, play with, or use them. Remember that people with disabilities are interested in the same topics of conversations as non-disabled individuals.
When introduced to a person with a disability, it is appropriate to offer to shake hands. People with limited hand use or who wear artificial limbs can usually shake hands.
If talking with a person using a wheelchair for any length of time, try to place yourself at their eye level.
Remember to show your face while talking with someone who is Deaf, or hard of hearing.
Do not shout or raise your voice unless asked to do so.
If greeting someone who is blind or has a visual impairment, identify yourself and those who may be accompanying you. Page 2
Do not pet or make a service dog the focus of conversation.
Let the individual know if you move or need to end the conversation.
When interacting with a person who is visually impaired, follow their lead.
Allow the person to negotiate their surroundings such as finding the door, handle, or locating a chair.
Treat adults as adults. Address people with disabilities by their first name only when extending the same familiarity to all others.
Community Services The Habilitation Department proudly celebrated our DSP's in recognition of Direct Support Professional Week. They are an integral part of our organization and have helped many of our individuals work towards their personal goals while promoting their independence to achieve them. REMINDER: Mandatory DSP Training October 2nd from 1pm to 3pm - or October 4th from 10am to 12pm CRAFT DAYS October 6th from 1pm to 3 pm October 15th from 1pm to 3pm

Disability Mentoring Day Beginning in 1999 as a White House initiative, Disability Mentoring Day has become a largescale national and international effort to promote career development for students and job seekers with disabilities through hands-on career exploration, on-site job shadowing, and ongoing mentoring. DMD is nationally hosted by the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), the largest cross-disability membership organization in the country. In 2012, DMD connected nearly 16,500 students and job seekers with disabilities with thousands of employers in more than 250 locations across all 50 states. The national day for DMD is the third Wednesday in October. This year it is being held in Oswego County on October 22nd at the America Foundry in Oswego (behind ARISE). DMD promotes career development through hands-on programs, job shadowing, and ongoing mentoring. This experience has helped thousands of past participants develop lasting relationships and secure internships or jobs. If you are interested in participating, please fill out and submit a completed application to the ARISE Employment office by October 10th 2014.

ARISE Light Up The Night
ARISE'S first Light Up the Night event had a great turnout of approximately 70 people who participated in the walk/run, and many others who volunteered with registration, set up, entertainment, and much more. Although it was rainy and cold all day, the skies cleared at the start of the event. We thank everyone who came out to help raise awareness and support ARISE! Page 4

Effective Communication Between Schools and Families: The Key to Success (NYSED (Vetted)) This NYSED vetted training was developed to promote quality special education services for all students with disabilities. The modules contained within this training are intended to help Families and School Personnel to build their communication skills in their role as a CSE team member that is consistent with State laws and regulations. The goals of this training are: • Participants will understand both their role and the student's role in the Special Education process • Participants will understand the barriers that interfere with effective communication and strategies to overcome the barriers • Participants will gain a basic understanding of the essential elements of effective communication • Participants will learn about strategies and tools that will establish and maintain effective collaboration between families and schools October 15th at the Fulton Junior High School 129 Curtis Street, Fulton, NY Parents' Rights and Responsibilities within the Special Education System What is the parent's role in the special education process? ARISE MSC Golf Tournament For the third year in a row, the ARISE golf clinic was a huge success! This year is the first year that other agencies participated. The individuals had a great time as they met new people, learned about golf, and enjoyed the beautiful weather. A big thank you to John Hayes at the Evergreen Golf course for sponsoring the two-day golf clinic. On the first day, Oswego Fire Chief, Jeff McCrobie, volunteered as an instructor by teaching the players proper golf etiquette and form. The individuals learned putting, chipping, and swinging on the range. The second day was a captain and crew tournament, followed by a picnic for everyone. A special thanks to the volunteer captains Shane Hoey, Chris Scoville, Spencer Horton, Andy Bidwell, Jeff McCrobie, Bob Ravesi, Marc Warner (ARC), Ryan (OCO), Don Finch, and all the ARISE staff who helped make this day possible. Everyone had a wonderful time.

ACCES-VR (Adult Career and Continuing Education Services-Vocational Rehabilitation) is an agency in the New York State Education Department that has helped many individuals with disabilities find and keep employment. You may know the agency from it’s previous acronym: VESID. Over the past year, ACCES-VR has helped over 900 people in Central New York (including 80 in Oswego County) succeed in careers ranging from customer service to information technology. Services to help eligible individuals reach their employment goals may include but are not limited to: job coaching, employment counseling, advocacy, and financial assistance with training, equipment, and work uniforms.
