Our Mission To work with people of all abilities to create a fair and just community in which everyone can fully participate.

By Sabine Ingerson, Regional Director Why would we want to wear purple on Thursday, October 19? Purple is the color chosen to raise awareness about domestic violence. ARISE is asking staff to wear purple that day. The State Office of the Prevention of Domestic Violence has invited the community to share photos of friends or co-workers with them for their Facebook page to show that as a state we want to shine a light on domestic violence. Why would an Independent Living Center such as ARISE, get involved? Nearly 25% of all women experience violence by a current or former partner. The abuse may be physical, but it could also be emotional, financial, verbal, psychological, sexual and technologyfacilitated. The rate of domestic violence is even higher for individuals with disabilities. One of the reasons is that the victim may be dependent on their partner as a caregiver for survival, making it more difficult to leave such a relationship. Perpetrators may also use a relationship of trust for economic gain. ARISE values civil rights and believes that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect, and that all individuals should have control over their lives, which means decide who they live with, who takes care of them, what activities they want to engage in and what their goals are. If you know of anyone who is experiencing domestic violence, know that ARISE is a safe place to share that information. Our staff is here to support and trust the survivor. We work with OCO’s Domestic Violence Advocates to assist in any way possible to help survivors regain power and control. Our mental health clinicians in Fulton are also here to provide counseling. There are many steps we can take to make a difference and help reduce the number of people who are feeling unsafe in their homes and relationships. You can listen, support, and refer to ARISE or to the NYS Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-942-6906); talk about it at work and with your family and friends; or volunteer. On October 19th, I invite you to come to our office with your friends and family dressed in purple and we will be glad to take your picture for our ARISE Facebook page and also the state to show that we will not tolerate any violation of human rights.

ARISE Golf 8TH Annual ARISE&Golf Clinic

We had another great golf clinic on August 29 th and 30th at Evergreen Hills Golf Course. John Hayes, the owner of the course has graciously hosted this event each year. The first day began with a lesson on the basics by PGA Professional, Dustin Jones, who is the owner and operator of the Dustin Jones Golf Academy in Whitesboro, NY, and PGA Professional, John Fowler, who was formerly the head pro at the Oswego Country Club. The second day we had a mini-tournament where participants had an opportunity to head out on the course. With the assistance of our fantastic ARISE staff, the gracious sponsors of the Evergreen Hills fundraiser, community volunteers, agency affiliations, and the participants, this event has grown each year and is truly a lot of fun! We can’t wait to see you next year!

ARISE Golf

(Nick Trask on the driving range for instruction) In the spirit of Direct Support Professionals Appreciation Week we would like to thank Andy Bidwell for going above and beyond for his individuals. One of his individuals Nick, has recently been battling with some health concerns. Due to hospitalization Nick was unable to attend the golf clinic this year as he had every other year. Knowing how much this meant to him, Andy arranged a surprise for Nick. When he was well enough, Andy brought Nick to the golf course where other staff and the golf course owner were there to greet him. Nick was given a captain’s polo shirt and named an honorary captain of the 2017 ARISE & Golf Clinic. Nick responded, “That is awesome,” and proceeded to put on his new shirt. Dressed for success and feeling good, he was then able to go out on the range and receive some private instruction. As much as this meant to Nick you could see in his face and by his words of thankfulness how much this meant to Andy as well. Andy called later to say that Nick said to him, “That was the best day of my life. Me an honorary captain? I can’t believe it!” We would like to thank Andy and all of our amazing DSPs that do so much for the people they serve, you are truly wonderful people!

Disability Mentoring Day OCTOBER IS DISABILITY AWARENESS MONTH

October is Disability Awareness Month and in honor of the individuals in Oswego County, the Oswego County Placement Network will be holding our 10th annual Disability Mentoring Day (DMD).

DMD is a large-scale national effort coordinated by American Association of People with Disabilities ( AAPD) to promote career development for students and job-seekers with disabilities through hands-on career exploration and ongoing mentoring relationships.

DMD was founded in 1999 through a White House initiative with less than three-dozen students participating to increase the awareness of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). Since that event, DMD has spring boarded from a one day event for a small group of students to an extensive national mentoring program for young professionals with disabilities across the United States, territories, and abroad.

DMD will take place on Wednesday Oct 25th at the American Foundry. We will kick it off with a Breakfast at 8:30am and guest speakers. If you are interested in becoming a Mentee/Mentor or would like to attend the event, please contact Teresa Gilbert (315) 342-4088 ext. 235

MSC Blog Have a Safe Halloween Dustin Hanley Medicaid Service Coordinator Hello everyone! The spookiest time of year has arrived at last! It is time to organize your costume, plan your trick or treating route, and hope to get all of your favorite Halloween Candy (my favorites are: Kit Kats and Butterfingers). Another important thing to consider on Halloween is safety. Now is a great time to start reviewing your pedestrian safety skills and stranger danger skills. Here are some tips to help you safely navigate your neighborhood on Halloween:     

Use crosswalks when crossing the road. In these crosswalks drivers know to yield to pedestrians. If you choose to go out at night, bring a flash light and wear reflective clothing if possible Limit cell phone use when navigating the streets. How can you see oncoming traffic when you are looking at your phone? Review your street signs. It is important to acknowledge stop signs and crossing signals. The safest place to walk is on the sidewalk. If one is not available, then walk as close as you can to the shoulder of the road and face traffic.

Stranger danger is another important thing to review. Remember just because someone is friendly does not necessarily mean they are to be trusted. Here are some tips you can use to protect yourself and prepare for the big day.   

Go out during safe trick or treating times. You don’t have to wait until it is pitch black outside, go a bit earlier and you still be able to see your surroundings. Go trick or treating in a group. Plan to go trick or treating with some friends or family, that way you can look out for each other. Knock on doors that you know. Stay in a familiar neighborhood and visit homes that you know. It may be a family member’s house or a family friend you have known for years. Say no to anything a stranger offers you. A stranger may offer you a ride home after a long night of trick or treating or some more candy. It is important to say no to these offers. If you are invited inside say no. Never enter an unfamiliar home Remember, the main goal of Halloween is to cut loose and have a fun and safe night. I hope everyone enjoys themselves and I hope to see some of you in costume here in the office!
