A MESSAGE TO OUR FRIENDS

Tom McKeown Executive Director

Teachers surround me. And most may not recognize themselves as teachers. An example: my youngest brother. Danny heads up the Telecommunications and Video Communications work for Maine Medical in (obviously, I suppose) the State of Maine. His work involves students who may be hospitalized for lengthy treatment. Some of these youngsters are able to participate in their school activities because a robot in school takes their place; their faces are on the computer screens of the robot that moves from class to class. I commented to Danny: “Wouldn’t it be easier to have a laptop carried from one room to another, with the use of a program like Skype?” “Aaaah,” said my brother, “I’m in your wheelhouse now. It’s all about accessibility and independence. The sick child in the hospital wants to feel empowered and mobile. The people on the far-end (teachers, other students, etc.) view the robot not as a robot, but AS the child (which is why we don’t name the robots). Childenabled robots have been able to use the cellular feature to go on field trips with the

rest of the class. It also doesn’t require another human to act on their behalf. I could go on, but you get the gist.” I saw a video of the student in the hospital moving the robot down the hall, chatting with his buds, and I got it! I love it when my youngest brother, of whom I am so proud, is my teacher. In the earliest days of ARISE, some 35 years ago, staff members recognized that “engineering” (the original “E” in the ARISE acronym) might offer solutions for independence. Technology has. In these weeks of owning our 35th year, we recognize and celebrate progress. We also acknowledge that we have “miles to go before we sleep.” Thanks to so many of you who read our publications; you have been among those who have carried us forward to this point. And many of you are my teachers. Though you may not know it.

ARISE NIGHT AT THE SYRACUSE CRUNCH Haylor, Freyer & Coon Sponsors ARISE Night at the Syracuse Crunch Thanks to our friends at Haylor, Freyer & Coon, and a collaboration with the Syracuse Crunch, ARISE was featured at the Syracuse Crunch game on March 1.

The painting was autographed by the entire Syracuse Crunch hockey team and received enthusiastic bids. In addition to making a gift to ARISE, the Crunch Foundation also helped us surprise Joseph with the opportunity to drop the puck at the beginning of the game and the chance to meet the players in the locker room after the game!

Over 100 of our friends joined us in the ARISE section for an evening of great hockey as we raised awareness and funds to help support the many programs we offer. One of the highlights of the evening was a custom painting created by Joseph Rufo, a UNIQUE artist (who happens to be an avid Syracuse Crunch hockey fan) in support of our fundraising efforts.

We are grateful to all of the volunteers who helped, including the wonderful team from Haylor, Freyer & Coon, Haylor, Freyer & Coon and the Syracuse Crunch as well as the terrific folks presenting a check to ARISE. from the Syracuse Crunch. WELCOMING OPTIONS FOR INDEPENDENCE ARISE and Options for Independence Merge

We are thrilled to announce that on February 1, 2014, Options for Independence officially became part of ARISE. Through this merger, ARISE has become a stronger and more flexible organization that is the designated Independent Living Center for Onondaga, Oswego, Madison, Cayuga, and Seneca Counties.

For the first time, individuals served by Options for Independence in Cayuga and Seneca Counties can now receive employment services to help them prepare for, find, and maintain a meaningful job in the community.

DID YOU KNOW?

7 Facts about Options for Independence 1. Options for Independence Started at ARISE ARISE received a grant in 1988 to create an Independent Living Center in Cayuga and Seneca Counties. As a result, Options for Independence was formed! Now, after 26 years we are excited to welcome Options for Independence back to ARISE.

2. We Advocate on Behalf of Nursing Home Residents Options for Independence has trained volunteer Ombudsmen that advocate on behalf of nursing home residents. These trained volunteers empower and give voices to family members, caregivers, and nursing home residents as they investigate and resolve problems.

3. We Help People Manage their Benefits

Meet our Cayuga/Seneca County Team

Through the Representative Payee program, individuals are able to work with an advocate and a Representative Payee to ensure that their benefits are well-managed and secure. This financial management is critical for many people as they learn to budget and protect their money so that they can live independently.

4. We Offer a Free Personal Care Bank After realizing that many of the participants served by Options for Independence lacked the basic household items needed for daily living, the staff formed a Personal Care Bank. Through community support and volunteers, we’re able to offer free toiletries, paper products, and cleaning supplies to families in need. (From left to right)

5. We Provide Disability Awareness In addition to providing Kids on the Block disability awareness puppet shows, Options for Independence holds annual events at local schools to help raise awareness and understanding about disabilities.

6. We Host an Annual Conference Did you know Options for Independence has hosted an annual conference for more than ten years? The event is a great opportunity for people with disabilities and their families to learn more about the resources and tools available in the community to help them live full and independent lives.

7. We Provide Supported Housing Our Supported Housing program through HUD helps individuals with disabilities who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness have a safe place to call home. Because of the supports we’re able to provide, people are able to focus on the future as they look for employment and rebuild their lives.

CELEBRATING INCLUSION & ACHIEVING INDEPENDENCE Inaugural Dinner Event Honors Dr. Jim Marshall & Celebrates Major ARISE Milestones

independence and the ability to determine my future for granted. The ability to make choices is something I want Leo to have. Unlike his peers, however, Leo’s life is faced with daily challenges, particularly challenges to his independence and self-realization...but what our family knows and what the work of ARISE confirms is that Leo’s challenges can be met and overcome with positive, creative attitudes,” said Cora True-Frost.

Over 290 people gathered at the DoubleTree Hotel for our ARISE Celebrating Inclusion & Achieving Independence Dinner Event.

We were proud to honor Dr. Jim “Doc” Marshall and present him with the first Champion for Independence Award. We will always be grateful to Doc for his tremendous gift of a horse farm that became ARISE at the Farm. Doc is also deeply committed to assisting people with disabilities and those with depressive illnesses and other “The work ARISE does is not just mental health challenges. Megan Coleman, Evening News Anchor for CNY Central, was an outstanding master of ceremonies and Cora True-Frost delivered an inspiring and informative keynote address on the obstacles and successes her family faces as they raise their five-year old son Leo, who has cerebral palsy. “The work ARISE does is not just essential for families like ours to thrive, it’s critical for creating the just world we all want to live in. We are so grateful to everyone who helped to make the evening a success, including sponsors CNY Central, Banner Envy and CNY Business Journal, the Patron and Donor table hosts, ticket buyers, silent auction donors, and the incredible people who served on the dinner planning committee.

CELEBRATING 19 SEASONS OF ARISE & SKI Offering Inclusive Winter Sports to People of All Abilities 85 skiers of all ages and abilities took on the slopes and flew down the hills during our 19th season of ARISE & Ski. “This ARISE & Ski season, I skied without a tether for the first time. It felt great, and no matter how many times I fell over, I never gave up. It feels great when I go to ski at Toggenburg...I love it because it makes me feel free, said Rachel Romer, an ARISE & Ski participant. Thanks to a generous gift from the Tuozzolo sisters, we were able to purchase a new bi-ski so that even more people can feel the priceless gift of flying down the slopes. ARISE & Ski would not be possible without the generosity of Jim Hickey and Toggenburg Winter Sports Center, additional support from NBT Bank, our dedicated ski leadership team, as well as the 100+ volunteers who share their time teaching and skiing with our participants. If you would like to volunteer for the 2014-2015 season, visit ariseandski.org or call (315) 671-3094.

IN MY OWN WORDS

Monica Petrus

ARISE & Ski Participant Learning to ski was difficult when I first started. Over the years of practice, I started to make progress more quickly. Especially from the end of last season until where I am now, I am more confident about skiing on my own. When I first started skiing I was using a Bi-unique. Now that I am using the new ski that has two skis and a seat designed like the mono-ski, I have more freedom to control myself. Also, it makes it easier for me to make many linked turns. Using the new ski has made skiing more enjoyable for me and I am able to do it with my family. It is nice to be able to have something to do in the winter time because it is great exercise.

SPECIAL THANKS

Celebrating Community Partners and Friends Thanks to our community partners and friends, who have recently offered their support: • M&T Bank for their generous support of our employment programs. We are so grateful for this partnership that raised awareness and support for our mission. • Music for the Mission sponsored by Joseph Stanley and the Stanley Law Offices for their gift that will help ensure the future of ARISE services for generations to come. • G&C Food Distributors for their support of our Oswego County Ramp Program. Because of their gift, we’ll be able to build even more ramps for families in need.

WHY I SUPPORT ARISE

David Dreverman, ARISE Foundation Treasurer Thanks to ARISE, the world is a better place than when I was a child. I can clearly remember the way that children who had any kind of special need were made to feel different from others and so often were singled out and excluded.

at the Farm and ARISE & Ski at Toggenburg. I am especially excited about the enhanced programs we help make possible like the 21-Day Challenge. To be able to see children achieve tremendous gains in their goals is absolutely priceless. And at ARISE, everyone can partake in things and share in a wide range of experiences.

Serving on the Audit and Finance Committee has offered me an indepth view of this well-run agency. I am impressed by the large I feel so inspired by the true percentage dedication of the budget of everyone “I am proud to support an that goes involved with ARISE organization that makes sure that directly to services as to real people don’t miss out on activities opposed to inclusion and administration. because they have a disability.” accessibility At a time for everyone. when some I am proud agencies are second-guessing to support an organization that everything they do, it is nice to be makes sure that people don’t miss linked with an organization that is out on activities because they have proactive and manages change a disability.
