A MESSAGE TO OUR FRIENDS
It is wonderful when a plan comes together. It’s an amazing thing when things come together on their own, based on their synergy and connections.
Tania S. Anderson Chief Executive Officer
Connections are everywhere at ARISE. We recently celebrated two Champions of Independence. Professor Arlene Kanter of the S.U. College of Law has dedicated her career to advocating for equal rights for people with disabilities. The Richard S. Shineman Foundation has generously supported our ramp program in Oswego County and many other community initiatives. In this edition you’ll read about Alex Truesdell, founder of the Adaptive Design Association. ARISE is committed to supporting the local adaptive design work. It is no accident that one of the key people in the local efforts, Dr. Nienke Dosa, was a 2016 Champion of Independence. It is another happy connection that an active partner in this group connected to us through our ARISE & Ski program. ARISE experienced a resurgence of synergy, energy and connections through

our work in the ADVANS program generously supported by the Gifford Foundation. This intense two-year exercise is helping ARISE to be stronger than ever in an interconnected, competitive marketplace and to provide the highest quality of services. Along with these exciting new ideas, we will hold our bedrock summer events. We celebrate the 27th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act in July, recognizing that disability rights are civil rights. Our ARISE & Ride for Ramps event in Oswego on June 3rd raises funds for this vital program. Our ARISE & Ride at the Farm celebration on July 22nd supports inclusive recreation at the Farm, which serves as a gateway and connection to so many other things we do. And we will experience another gala art opening at the Everson Museum of Art on August 17th, where we connect beauty, creativity and disability. I invite you to experience the power of a partnership with ARISE.
Adaptive design and art ARISE Artists in Action
The ARISE Young Adult Art Explorers Club meets on Wednesdays, providing an opportunity to experience and enjoy creating art. ARISE staff members assist young adults, ages 14 to 21, who attend independently or with a family member or volunteer. At each meeting, members explore different media and projects. In April, their creative juices were flowing as they painted iPad holders made out of cardboard by the Adaptive Design Association – Syracuse.
If you’re interested in joining the club, we’d love to have you! Participants must be OPWDD eligible. This is a free club and all of the supplies are included. Please call in advance to let us know that you’re interested in attending so we have enough supplies. Contact Jessica Martin at jmartin@ariseinc.org or (315) 671-4641 to reserve your space. If you have questions about transportation or working one-on-one, just let us know. We hope you’ll come experience art in a whole new way!

CELEBRATING INCLUSION & ACHIEVING INDEPENDENCE 4th Annual Dinner Honors Arlene S. Kanter & Richard S. Shineman Foundation
There was much to celebrate when we gathered for this year’s dinner event. We honored two extraordinary Champions of Independence: Professor Arlene Kanter and the Richard S. Shineman Foundation, and we welcomed MacArthur Genius Award Fellow Alex Truesdell, founder and executive director of the Adaptive Design Association, to Syracuse. Megan Coleman did a fantastic job as our master of ceremonies. We were pleased that past Champions of Independence James “Doc” Marshall, Brian McLane, Wegmans, and Dr. Nienke Dosa were with us, along with Daryn Hickey, son of Champion Jim Hickey. ARISE Foundation Board Chair Kim Brown was delighted to thank guests for their support of ARISE’s work. Event chairs Cora and Jim True-Frost applauded ARISE’s mission and shared their reasons for supporting us. Their son, Leo, is both a horseback rider and skier with us, and their daughter, Phoebe, loves taking riding lessons with her brother. Cora and Jim thanked ARISE for offering opportunities for inclusive recreation that are rarely available to people with disabilities. Everyone looked toward the screens when ARISE’s “Chief Adventure Officer,” Gavin Provo, appeared and began his exciting explanation of endowment funds. It’s a safe bet that the enthusiastic applause that followed was for Gavin’s performance, not the topic of endowment funds. Gavin is a super star on a horse and on the slopes. That terrific video was generously created for us by Janelle Fields and her firm, JFields Marketing. We also previewed a new ARISE video, created by CNY Central and JFields Marketing. Five people who connect with ARISE, as well as a parent, shared their stories of what ARISE means to them. Tania Anderson, ARISE CEO, celebrated our work as an Independent Living Center and gave a special tribute to Doc Marshall for his gift that became ARISE at the Farm. Next year is the 20th anniversary of ARISE at the Farm. Connor McGough, ARISE Foundation Board member and active participant in local adaptive design efforts, introduced keynote speaker Alex Truesdell. He joined Tania Anderson in presenting Alex with a special Pioneer of Transformational Design award. Alex Truesdell awed and inspired the audience with the story of how she came to see the world differently and began her work in adaptive design. We are grateful to our sponsors and all who helped make our dinner event possible. With your support, we are changing the world. 4
ADAPTIVE DESIGN
“We build for one, engage everyone, and change everything,” says Alex Truesdell, a MacArthur Genius Award Fellow and the executive director and founder of the Adaptive Design Association (ADA).

For three decades, Alex Truesdell has changed the lives of thousands of people through her unique process and approach. Adaptive design brings together a diverse group of community members to create customized solutions for each child. Using eco-responsible, low cost materials, it’s all
about removing barriers so kids can live life to its fullest.
Over a three-day weekend last June in Syracuse, Alex and her designers worked with a group of local people including therapists, a physician, SU School of Design, teachers, and others to develop solutions to the barriers faced by four local children. Most importantly, the parents of the kids described their hopes for their children and participated in the design process. The results were 15 items that were designed and made in three busy days. What else happened? A local movement began. People who participated in the work embraced Alex’s vision. Several adaptive design “builds” have occurred since then and a number of devices have been made to assist children in accomplishing things that had been difficult or impossible. The evolving local efforts now include Weedsport Jr./ Sr. High School and we hope to involve many other local students and partners. Interested in learning more about how to get involved with the local adaptive design efforts? Contact Jesse Evensky at EvenskyJ@upstate.edu or (315) 464-2273. 5
Oswego ramp & home modification program Providing Freedom to Our Community Members
Spring has sprung and our Oswego Ramp & Home Modification Program is in full swing! With no government funding for ramps, residents who are unable to use stairs and are at risk of nursing home placement rely on ARISE for ramps and home modification. Thanks to generous supporters and community members, we are able to provide more than 30 ramps a year to neighbors so they can retain or regain their independence! We are tremendously grateful to G&C Foods for being our largest financial contributor to this program every year. Their commitment to preserving independence is extraordinary. We also want to thank our other generous community supporters including Novelis, Pathfinder, Compass, Fastenal, and CiTi. Who builds the ramps? Amazing volunteers! Wooden ramps are built in sections so they can be easily assembled, as well taken apart and reused over and over again. The aluminum ramps go up more quickly and provide ease and comfort for those in Hospice care. Volunteers not only build the sections, they also install the ramps, take them down when no longer needed, and install them in a new location. Through our partnership with the Center for Instruction, Technology, and Innovation (CiTi), students are able to master their carpentry skills while building the ramp sections and assisting in installation. We are incredibly grateful to the Richard S. Shineman Foundation for continuing to support us as we expand the program. The Shineman Foundation has provided funding that has made it possible for us to increase our partnership with Oswego County Hospice. The availability of aluminum ramps means that we can install a ramp quickly and make it possible for a person to be with their family. When Duane’s wife was receiving Hospice care, we were there to help. “It meant so much to me to have the ramp. ARISE alleviated a lot of the hardships we would’ve had to go through. I’m so thankful they were there,” said Duane. The largest fundraising event that supports the Ramp & Home Modification Program is ARISE & Ride for Ramps, which will take place on Saturday, June 3rd, at Lighthouse Lanes in Oswego. The event consists of a motorcycle ride around the north country, a 5K run/walk around the Oswego Speedway, music, barbeque, raffles, kids activities, and more! You can sign up and get more information at rideforramps.org. We hope to see you there! 6
Recreation for all at ARISe at the farm Always in the Swing of Things at the Farm
Almost 20 years ago, veterinarian Jim “Doc” Marshall wanted his farm to be a permanent place for people with disabilities and their families to come together and enjoy recreation. His gift in 1998 of a 77-acre horse farm resulted in ARISE at the Farm, where thousands of people have benefitted from, and shared, therapeutic and adaptive horseback riding and so much more. We are looking forward to celebrating the 20th anniversary of ARISE at the Farm in 2018! Riders as young as two and adults well into their later years take riding lessons. They are also able to attend inclusive summer camps, school break recreation, a paved track, fishing pond, and our 16,000 square foot accessible playground. This winter, we received a grant from the UPS Foundation to create a video about ARISE at the Farm and purchase a piece of adaptive equipment called an “Equicizer”. The Equicizer is a wooden horse that moves to allow riders to stretch and warm up for lessons. It also allows new riders who are hesitant about getting on a horse a chance to become comfortable with the idea. In March, we completed another 21-Day Challenge! This year we had three riders who had a riding lesson every day for three weeks in a row. It was wonderful to see the progress that Aria, Morgan, and Jenna made in such a short time! We are grateful to our volunteers who helped us make this awesome opportunity possible. ARISE & Ride at the Farm is our largest fundraising event that supports the Farm. This year, we hope you’ll join us on Saturday, July 22nd, for our 7th annual event. We have 12- and 25-mile cycle rides around Chittenango, a Walk & Wheel-A-Thon around our paved track, high ropes course, music, raffles, face painting, pony rides, and more. It’s a fun day for the whole family and we hope you’ll join us! More information and registration options can be found at ariseandride.org! Want to become more involved with the Farm? We always need vounteers helping with lessons and on the grounds, plus we have a Friends of the Farm committee. Learn more about all of our Farm opportunities at ariseatthefarm.org!

17th edition of unique art & literary magazine Creative Expression from Across the Region
Providing an opportunity for gifted artists and writers to share their work is a privilege we cherish. The 2017 edition of UNIQUE Art and Literary Magazine will be published in August. What began as a magazine with a one night show at our office has become a high-quality publication that debuts with an exhibit at the region’s premier art venue, the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, and then becomes an exhibit traveling around the region. Every year, we receive submissions from people across central and northern New York. The work reflects a wide variety of media and features the creative voice and expression of people with disabilities as young as eight years old and in their 80’s and beyond. The work is judged by an Editorial Board made up of people from across the community. It has become quite a competitive process! “Submitting a piece for UNIQUE is something our members shoot for each year. There is something magical about seeing your work in the magazine, and having the work displayed so beautifully at the Everson is wonderful,” says Steve Healy, of the David Clark Learning Center. “UNIQUE has become a highlight of every year. UNIQUE is a quality publication that is laid out beautifully, printed on excellent paper, and so well done. It is something that is for the whole community, and it is terrific.” When Anna Marie Kuiper learned that her first-time submission had been accepted for UNIQUE in 2012, she called to tell us how grateful she was to learn the news. She told us it had been her “life’s dream” to have her work at the Everson. What a thrill it was to watch as she entered the museum on opening night of the exhibit to learn that her piece had been selected for the cover of the magazine! We are so grateful to Elizabeth Dunbar and her staff at the Everson Museum of Art for a wonderful partnership. We hope you’ll join us as we debut the UNIQUE 2017 at the Everson Museum of Art on Thursday, August 17th! More information can be found at uniquemagazine.org.

keeping up with our advocacy department Advocating for Change
Members of ARISE’s Independent Living Council advocated for the last two years for the passage of the Source of Income Protection Legislation in the city of Syracuse. We’re excited to announce that the legislation passes and is now in effect. It prevents landlords operating in the city of Syracuse from discriminating against tenants who hold government rent subsidies such as Section 8 or those who have lawful sources of income such as SSI or SSDI. An ordinance still needs to be passed in Onondaga County, outside of the city limits. To get involved with this issue or other issues affecting people with disabilities, contact Beata at (315) 671-2929. This year’s annual Americans with Disabilities Act anniversary celebration and disability rights march in Onondaga County will happen on Wednesday, July 26th, from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM at the Atrium Downtown, 201 E. Washington St. in Syracuse. The event is free and open to the public. Our Madison County celebration will take place on Friday, July 28th, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Kalet Theater, on Main St. in Oneida. In Oswego County, a proclamation will be issued by the Oswego County Legislature on July 13th at 2:00 PM in the chambers of the Oswego County Legislature.
Want to have an amazing summer experience? Connect with a terrific student in our work readiness program funded by ACCES-VR! We are looking to connect students at Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool High Schools who are interested in expanding their vocational horizons. This service is designed to provide students with real (unpaid) work experiences and opportunities to network in actual business environments consistent with their vocational goals. The students are completing the first part of the work readiness program and by the summer, they will be ready to connect with a company. Some of the fields of interest are diesel mechanics, nursing, zoology, and orchestra conducting, though students are open to other possibilities. We would love to talk with employers in the community about possible placements for these students prior to graduation. To learn more, contact Spencer Horton at (315) 342-4088 X229. 9
SPECIAL THANKS
Celebrating Community Partners and Friends The Gifford Foundation has been making a difference in this region since 1953. In 2007, it created the ADVANS (Advancing and Developing the Value and Assets of Nonprofits in Syracuse) process, providing vital strategic support to local organizations. “As our signature capacity building initiative, ADVANS has over the years transformed many organizations large and small, giving them stability and sustainability,” says Dirk Sonneborn, Gifford Foundation Executive Director. “This allows them to continue to do the important work of helping, enriching and growing our community.” “ARISE joined our fifth cohort of ADVANS in 2015 and has invested a significant amount of staff and board time over the past two years. A clear eyed assessment, ability to welcome change, and a thoughtful partnership with their consultant indicates an organization that is committed to their clients and mission,” according to Lindsay McClung, Director of Community Grantmaking. Over the past 15 years, ARISE has grown dramatically. We went from covering two counties to five, employing 150 people to over 850, and our budget grew along with it. Participating in ADVANS has been incredibly important as we continue to focus on providing high-quality services, responding to emerging needs and opportunities, and remaining true always to the Independent Living Philosophy which defines us.
Spring is here and so are new tables!
A Huge Addition!
Thanks to Mary Anne Agan, our dedicated and caring volunteer at ARISE at the Farm, there are three wonderful new accessible picnic tables at the Farm. A loyal volunteer for many years, Mary Anne enjoys her time with our riders. She loves seeing them make progress and celebrates all of their accomplishments.
When we realized that another ramp in the Farm arena would help us become more efficient, all it took was a call to the right people. When Laura Little called Paul Mabe and asked if the Silver Hammers could build us a new ramp – the answer was yes!
Mary Anne wanted us to have nice, new picnic tables in the arena and outside near the playground. Her very generous donation made it possible for us to purchase three new tables, one for inside the arena and two for outside. Sharing community and fellowship is what it’s all about, and Mary Anne has made it much easier to do that through her gift. Thank you so much, Mary Anne!

Thanks to these incredible community volunteers, a terrific second ramp was built in a short time. Has it made a difference? More than we even imagined! Two riders are able to get in the saddle at the same time, meaning that they can begin their lessons sooner and have more riding time. We are so grateful to the members of the Silver Hammers for their kindness and their skills!
SPECIAL THANKS
Celebrating Community Partners and Friends
Thanks to these special friends who have recently offered their support: Rolling up their sleeves at the Farm Every year, the kind folks from Christian Brothers Academy come out to help with spring clean-up at the Farm. We love seeing them, because it means that spring has arrived and they will make the Farm look great! We are grateful for their willingness to include us in their plans every year.
Special Support for the Farm We appreciated the opportunity to speak to the members of Eastwood Rotary about ARISE and the Farm. And we are so grateful for the gift they made to the Farm! Rotarians are people who care and do things to assist the community, and we appreciate the Eastwood Rotary for this generous support!
UPS Grant Means So Much When someone is personally connected to the Farm, it means a lot. When that person is Lola Delans from UPS, it means access to a grant opportunity. Stop by the Farm to see the new Equicizer and other equipment purchased with funds from UPS. And stay tuned for an announcement about a brand new video about the Farm – coming soon. This special support from the UPS Foundation means a lot now and into the future. We are very grateful.
CiTi Students and Staff Students, faculty, and staff from the Center for Instruction, Technology & Innovation (CiTi) have become key partners in our Ramp & Home Modification Program. They are making it possible for Oswego County residents to remain at home and maintain their independence. CiTi students and their instructor videotaped and photographed our dinner event, too! We are thrilled to work with the great CiTi folks! • Toggenburg Mountain Winter Sports Center for hosting the 21st season of ARISE & Ski! • Our terrific ARISE & Ski instructors and volunteers! • All of the staff and partners who held a vital Transition Fair in Auburn! • Everyone who helped make the TBI Fair in Oswego a great event! • Novelis employees who built ramps and Novelis for the monetary donation! • Exelon for providing funds for the Call-N-Ride program again this year! • Hawthorne Property Services for once again doing hard work at the Farm that helps so much! 11

WHY I SUPPORT ARISE
Sonnet Loftus, ARISE Foundation Board Member Though I was familiar with ARISE, attending the Celebrating Inclusion & Achieving Independence dinner event in 2015 allowed me to learn first-hand about ARISE’s impact in the community. I was impressed by the organization’s reach and the clear results that are achieved. I was overwhelmed with emotion to hear people who utilize ARISE services, and their families, talk about what it means to them. I heard that ARISE, and the people who connect with the organization, see a challenge as an opportunity and never give up. I was impressed at that dinner, and continue to be impressed as I have learned more through my involvement on the ARISE Foundation Board. From what I have seen, everyone connected with ARISE has the same attitude that there are no limits to what can be done.
I have seen how deeply rooted ARISE is – it is really a major part of people’s lives. The organization touches not only people with disabilities but also their siblings, parents, and other family members. People can’t stop saying enough good things about ARISE and are so appreciative. The work ARISE is doing in job placement and partnering with employers is unbelievably impressive to me. ARISE is making independence possible for people and helping companies to become fully inclusive workplaces. I hadn’t realized ARISE is continually working to place people in the right jobs. People on the ARISE Foundation Board have different skill sets and different reasons for connecting to ARISE. We share the same goal of fulfilling the mission and are always looking for people to join us.

ALL That arise is A New Video Brings Us Together
What is ARISE? We are always looking for ways to get the word out about who we are and what we do. Last year, thanks to Congruent Media, we debuted five videos featuring people who connect with ARISE in different ways. This year, through the generous work done for us by CNY Central and JFields Marketing, our new video has six people sharing their ARISE stories. From our mental health and employment services, to recreation and art, this video allows you to learn about the ways we join people on their journeys to achieving their dreams! Check out the new video at ARISEis.org and be sure to share it with your family and friends!
CAN YOU SAY ENDOWMENT? That’s the question asked by our Chief Adventure Officer (CAO), Gavin Provo, in the incredible new video created by JFields Marketing. Gavin provides the basics on how an endowment fund works and why you should consider supporting our two endowment funds - the ARISE Future Fund and the ARISE at the Farm Legacy Fund. We guarantee you will smile as you watch our CAO giving you the basics – and the math – about endowment funds. Check it out at: ariseinc.org/endowment!
WAYS TO TOUCH LIVES Did you know that more than 7,000 people connect with ARISE every year? Our dedicated staff members work tirelessly to provide information and support. Joining them in making so much possible are absolutely amazing people who share their time as volunteers. A great deal happens at ARISE at the Farm because of our passionate volunteers. ARISE & Ski instructors and volunteers are passionate about sharing their love of winter recreation. And a number of other services we provide, including the Ramp and Ombudsman programs, would simply not happen without outstanding friends who share their time as volunteers. We are so fortunate to have these caring and wonderful community members in our ARISE family!
