A MESSAGE TO OUR FRIENDS
Tom McKeown Executive Director
Many of us heard the recent news of the very positive support received by a Wegman’s employee, after he had been criticized loudly by a displeased customer. His experience of autism meant that he was slower to cash out the customer. I was pleased that so many people came forward to acknowledge the employee’s great work and affirm his contributions. We have come a long way in efforts to make it possible for people of all abilities to share their skills in the workforce.
this year, our results were excellent. In fact, our successful track record led to our being awarded funding for new programs.
For so many reasons, I have never been more excited about ARISE and the future. As an Independent Living Center, we are dedicated to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to live a full and independent life of their own choosing. We are well-positioned to meet current and emerging needs.
We’re excited to be honoring Dr. Jim “Doc” Marshall, whose generous gift became ARISE at the Farm, at our inaugural dinner event, “Celebrating Inclusion & Achieving Independence.”
Our annual audit done by an independent accounting firm once again yielded outstanding results. In every way they measure, we received high scores. What a credit to our excellent finance team. We have the right processes and procedures in place to use funding efficiently and effectively. Funders also conduct program reviews to evaluate the work we are doing. And again

Through a long-awaited merger with Options for Independence, we will soon expand our reach to serve people in Cayuga and Seneca counties. We are delighted to welcome the talented staff members of Options as they join ARISE. I look forward to sharing more details as they are finalized.
As we near the end of this calendar year, I want to express my thanks for your support. Your belief in the abilities of people who have disabilities is making it possible for people to move forward. We are grateful for the difference you make and promise to continue to use your gifts to work diligently with people as they pursue their goals and achieve success. We hope you have a safe and happy holiday season and wish you the best in the coming year.
INDEPENDENCE THROUGH EMPLOYMENT
Helping People Plan Their Careers & Find Meaningful Jobs in the Community How many times have you met a new person and the first question they ask is, “What do you do?” As a child, you dream of what you’ll be when you grow up. What if people automatically assumed that you wouldn’t make a good employee? What if you were denied opportunities based on false assumptions? People with disabilities often face additional barriers that make finding a job difficult, if not seem completely out of reach. That’s why we’re here.
“ARISE understood the challenges my son faced but would not let these challenges interfere with making sure he was successful.”
Recent statistics from the United States Department of Labor for September 2013 revealed that people with disabilities have almost double the unemployment rate (13.1%) of people without disabilities (6.8%).
Our employment team works every day to remove barriers that people with disabilities face as they look for satisfying jobs in the community.
8
By working with local companies, we break down assumptions and show employers the many benefits that people with disabilities can bring to their company. We’re proud to have helped participants find jobs at large employers like Wegmans, Bank of New York Mellon, and Walmart, as well as with smaller local businesses. By working one-on-one with each person, we help them develop skills and prepare for a career that matches their personal interests and goals. Whether helping people with resumes, preparing for interviews, or on-the-job coaching, - Proud Parent we’re there.
At ARISE, we know that employment can be the key to independence and self-determination. Because of your support, we’re able to make a difference in the community and ensure that everyone, regardless of their disability, has the same chance to compete and contribute to the workforce. After all, a truly diverse workforce benefits us all.
Catch a behind-the-scenes look to see what a typical day is like for our employment team through a special “A Day in the Life” post at ariseinc.org/a-day-in-the-life.

NEWSFLASH 18th ARISE & Ski Season to Begin
Lockheed Gift Starts New Playground Fund
Skiers and volunteers are looking forward to the snow as they take on the slopes in January for our 18th season of ARISE & Ski. It’s not too late to sign up to volunteer, so if you’re interested, call 671-3094 or send an email to ski@ariseinc.org.
Thanks to a gift from the Lockheed Martin Employees Federated Fund and Tania Anderson, the families who visit ARISE at the Farm will soon be able to enjoy a brand new, much larger swing set.
Another Successful Ramp Season With your support, our Oswego County Ramp Program is celebrating another successful season with a total of over 30 ramp projects completed in 2013.
UNIQUE Traveling Exhibition We are grateful to the folks at May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society for displaying the UNIQUE 2013 Exhibit from mid-October to mid-November. To see upcoming exhibit dates, visit uniquemagazine.org.
This generous gift has also sparked the creation of a plan for a new accessible playground at the Farm. Runners taking part in the 2013 Festival of Races generated the first funds for the playground, and generous donors have already begun helping it to grow. It’s always been our dream to build an accessible playground at the Farm, and with your help, this dream can become reality. If you’d like to make a gift in support of this effort, visit ariseinc.org/give or call Nancy Kern Kronen at 671-2903.

LIVING IN YOUR OWN HOME
Because of You, We’re Able to Help People Move Out of Nursing Facilities and Live in the Community Coordinating the move out of a nursing home can feel like a huge undertaking. Without guidance and support, many residents find themselves stuck in the nursing facility as their dream of returning home is taken away from them. That’s where we come in. ARISE serves as the Regional Resource Development Center for the Nursing Home Transition & Diversion (NHTD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Waiver programs. Through NHTD and TBI, seniors and people with disabilities are able to obtain a wide array of services to help them avoid moving into or return home from a nursing facility.
MAKE YOUR MARK
YOU CAN SUPPORT THE “RETURN TO A HOME OF MY OWN” FUND A generous gift from Baldwin Real Estate Corp. jumpstarted a new fund that helps residents move out of nursing homes through our Onondaga County Health Care Advocacy Program. If you’d like to make a donation in support of the fund, visit ariseinc.org/give, mail in your gift with the fund name on the memo line, or contact Nancy at 6712903 or nkronen@ariseinc.org.
However, if people don’t meet the qualifications set by New York State for the NHTD or TBI programs, our advocacy programs are still able to help. Our free “safety net” programs ensure that everyone, regardless of their age or disability, is able to receive the help that they need.
4
Sometimes, a person just needs to find accessible housing in the community. Other times, the cases are much more complex. Our advocates are there so you don’t have to make your way through the maze alone. Joe, 56, found himself living in a nursing home even though he desperately wanted to go home. He originally went in for a quick 6-8 weeks of rehab but, after a year, he had not been able to return home. After he reached out to our Nursing Home Education & Outreach Coordinator, we took action.
Working closely with Joe, our advocates took him apartment hunting and also helped him set up a Pooled Trust to ensure that his benefits would be maintained. Before he moved out of the nursing home, we made sure his insurance was all set. Now, Joe is living his life the way he wants to — independently and in his own place.
DID YOU KNOW?
7 Things You May Not Know About Our Mental Health Programs Not all disabilities are visible, and mental health issues can impact all areas of a person’s life. Here are seven ways your support is making a difference through our Mental Health Programs:
1. You’re Removing Barriers for Children Transportation can be a huge barrier for families. To help make it easier for families, we have therapists based right inside local schools. Through this partnership, many more children have access to services that they might not otherwise receive.
2. You’re Collaborating with the Community
Other Ways We Can Help Do you want to avoid moving into or transition out of a nursing home? In addition to our NHTD/ TBI and Health Care Advocacy Programs, here are some other ways we can help:
• Benefits Assistance & Advocacy
Receive assistance applying for benefits like SSI, SSDI, food stamps, and HEAP.
• Consumer-Directed Personal Assistance Hire, schedule, and train your own personal care assistant.
• Equipment Loan Closet Test or borrow durable medical equipment for free during temporary times of need.
• Home Modification Program Make your home accessible through interior home modifications.
• Housing Locating & Advocacy We can help you locate affordable and accessible housing in the community.
• Nursing Home Education & Outreach (MFP) We can provide information about community-based programs and services.
• Ramp Construction Assistance We can build a ramp so you can regain your independence and reclaim access to your home.
In collaboration with Upstate Pediatric and Adolescent Center, our therapists are working alongside their doctors and other medical professionals to ensure that children receive holistic care that is focused on both physical and emotional wellness.
3. You’re Helping People During Crisis Situations We’re one of the few clinics that offer emergency walk in services, allowing us to act quickly to help people in crisis situations. People get help when they need it most.
4. You’re Providing Early Detection By providing free early recognition screening for children under 21, parents are able to take action and pro-actively ensure that their children’s emotional and behavioral needs are met.
5. You’re Focused on the Whole Person Both mental and physical health are essential to personal wellness. By offering wellness checks in our Syracuse clinic, we’re helping people achieve total mind and body wellness.
6. You’re Using Innovative Approaches In a pilot program funded by OnCare, our mental health therapists collaborated with our staff at ARISE at the Farm to help children who have experienced a history of trauma. Our innovative Equine Therapy Program was so successful, OnCare has expanded the program so that even more children can benefit.
7. You’re Expanding Outreach and Services As we look to the future, we look forward to expanding our efforts to meet community needs by providing much-needed geriatric mental health services.

NEW BROKER PROGRAM NOW OFFERED AT ARISE Consolidated Supports & Services Option Allows Families to Design Their Own Service Plans Imagine you’re drawing your self-portrait. With a blank sheet of paper and a handful of pens at your fingertips, you’re in complete control. Because you have a deep love of animals, you draw yourself volunteering at a local animal shelter. Your love of cooking inspires you to add a chef’s hat to your outfit. You carefully sketch your parents in the background since they are such an important part of your life. What if we were talking about your real life, and not just a drawing? What if you had total control and could design the services you received around your life, your interests, and your goals? Now, through the new Broker Program available at ARISE, you can.
Our Start-Up Brokers will work with you to help identify the things that are most important to you: your life goals, your personal interests, and your skills. Then, working within your personal CSS budget, you’ll collaborate with your circle of support and broker to design a plan that matches your interests and goals.
UPCOMING WORKSHOP
DO YOU WANT TO LEARN IF CSS IS RIGHT FOR YOU? We’re hosting a special workshop on January 7th from 1-3 PM at our Syracuse Office. There is limited room so please RSVP by calling Andrea at 671-2989.
Consolidated Supports and Services (CSS) gives you the power of choice. By working together with a broker, your Medicaid Service Coordinator, and your circle of support (family, friends, and other important people you select), you’ll have the opportunity to craft your own service plan. Because no two people are alike, no two plans are the same.
6
Do you want more independence in your life? Do you want to make some changes to the life you have now?
So, if working with animals and volunteering is important to you, you can make sure it is in your plan. Do you want to learn how to cook or develop other independent living skills? You can use your budget to hire people to help you with that goal.
Everything we do at ARISE is based on the Independent Living Philosophy: the belief that people with disabilities have a right to selfdetermination. We are delighted that the new CSS program gives families the freedom to make choices and gain a whole new level of self-direction.

YOUR QUESTIONS I’m completely overwhelmed by the world of disability services. Can ARISE help me? Yes! Whether you have a simple question, or have no idea where to start, we can help. As the designated Independent Living Center for the area, our main purpose is to serve as a resource for people with disabilities in Central New York. Through our experience and commitment to serving people with any kind of disability, we have a wide array of knowledge and information.
IN MY OWN WORDS
Lisa Seguin
Mom & ARISE Broker for Oswego County As a mother, I was nervous and unsure about taking on a service like CSS, realizing I would be the one who plans/ directs the service plan since my daughter is still young. However, as a parent I also realized the services that my daughter did have were not really working. They were traditional and not flexible at all.
Our staff can meet with you to help guide you to programs that might be a good fit for you. All of our programs are highly individualized and designed around your personal needs and goals. And, if we do not currently offer a program that meets your needs, we have an up-todate directory of community resources. We can also provide direct referrals to link you with other agencies so that you can access the services that you need. So, if you have any questions, feel free to call any of our offices. We’d love to help!
I wanted my daughter to be included in community programs and work on developing independent skills every day. Realizing my daughter’s learning style and challenges, I also knew I had insight on how to identify the special person who would be a good fit to work closely with her and our family. As my daughter has grown over the years and her interests have changed, so has her plan. It is a process, as is everything in life. However, with persistence and patience, you will see how the plan can unfold to help you achieve independence and obtain the appropriate supports you need for everyday living.

MY BROTHER’S JOURNEY By: Janice Vitale
When my parents passed away in 2008, my younger brother David, who just celebrated turning 50 this year, joined me and my family in our home in Liverpool.
staff grooming the horses, cleaning the stalls, and moving hay. He’s always eager and ready to lend a hand.
David has Down syndrome and had always lived at home with our parents. Once I became his guardian, we made our way through the maze of services that might be available to him.
It’s been so moving to see David develop friendships at the Farm. Laura and her team are so friendly and comforting – David’s become quite a social guy!
We were absolutely thrilled when we discovered and fell in love with ARISE at the Farm.
“ARISE at the Farm is such a hidden gem...I couldn’t be more thrilled that we both found the Farm.”
For the first time, David has had the chance to do things like horseback riding and participate in summer day camps. These activities were not available to him when he was growing up.
Now we enjoy taking horseback riding lessons together every other Tuesday and we also spend a great deal of time volunteering as a team at the Farm. If you look into the office at the Farm, you’ll notice the mug that Dave is so proud to have hanging in the kitchen. David also volunteers on his own at the Farm two days each week. You’ll catch him right alongside the
8 8
He enjoys being in the middle of the action and talking around the water cooler (only, instead of a water cooler there are lots of water buckets for the horses!). As I danced with David at the Farm’s Fall Barn Dance, you could see the smiles on the faces of all the kids and adults as they danced to their own beat. In our time at the Farm, I’ve watched David thrive. Instead of just using one word at a time, he is putting sentences together. He has learned so much, developed friendships, and has become someone who is excited about life. ARISE at the Farm is such a hidden gem. It is all about warmth, belonging, and simply being who you are, exactly as you are. I couldn’t be more thrilled that we both found the Farm.

WHY I SUPPORT ARISE
Marianne De Lorenzo DiNiro, ARISE Foundation Board Member My nephew’s success working with the Employment Program was the reason for my initial involvement with ARISE. Through his job, I have watched my nephew grow and have loved seeing him become confident in himself as a person. I wanted to connect with the organization that had changed his life. I had no idea, however, that becoming involved would change my life, too. Just thinking about ARISE puts a smile on my face because I have personally seen what this great organization does: it gives people confidence and helps people with different abilities to move forward in their lives in their own way. ARISE is about so much more than just getting jobs. It’s about possibilities and opportunities and
having a full and satisfying life. It’s an awesome feeling bringing people out to see ARISE at the Farm. I love to see the look on the faces of kids who initially say, “I don’t like horses.” Then, when it’s time to go home, they don’t want to leave. I really can’t explain the feeling when you watch the riders accomplish so much through their participation in the 21-Day Challenge. It’s simply remarkable. The ARISE Foundation has come a long way in the two years since its formation, and we’re building. We’re getting our name out there and we know we’re going to be bigger and better each year. We are so grateful to all of the generous supporters who have joined us in the movement to make a real difference. Being part of the ARISE Foundation gives me a chance to be with wonderful people and it makes me feel that we can do anything – and we will! And we’d love for you to join us.
