Audi, Airbus And Italdesign A Glimpse Into The Future of Transportation

Luxur y Buyers Guide
ith all the enthusiasm around vertical takeoff and landing vehicles, we’ve all seen the concepts or prototypes coming from a variety of sources, from ride-sharing company Uber to luxury-car maker Aston Martin. It seems that everyone is vying for a position in the marketplace.

VTOLs are quickly competing to become the transportation of the future. Perhaps we’re now skeptical of the continued promise of flying in cars after many decades of hearing they’re going to happen in our lifetime. Truth is, it will happen. We are closer than ever before to harnessing the technology. With each new development, more people are becoming aware of recent advances in autonomous vehicles and the future of terrestrial mobility. However, the autonomous flying taxi concept still doesn’t receive nearly as much attention—even though it has just as much potential for revolutionizing the way mankind may soon travel. All Images Provided Courtesy of Italdesign, and Audi
“Auto R&D departments are all scrambling in the race to the eco-friendly skies.”
The industry’s latest prototypes are being developed by automotive and aircraft manufacturers in the luxury sector, bringing their visions to life in this new open market. No, this is not just another flying car dream from sci-fi comic books or television, with wings that fold up to transform into tie-fighter jets, or winged cars. Nope, instead it’s based on a completely modular system in which the VTOL component lands from the air and merges the passenger compartment onto a road-car based platform, running an electric car completely autonomously. For most companies, the wave of the future is VTOLs and autonomous flight, to be added somewhere down the line as soon as the technology is where it needs to be, yet with no time frame really given. But, thanks to Audi, with its partnership with Italdesign and Airbus, there is finally real progress being made in this field.
Forbidden Fruit Luxur y Buyers Guide
The concept, called Pop.Up Next, delivers the next step in the evolution of the autonomous VTOL taxi. Its vision is true to the brand’s image in the layout and design of the pod vehicle. One of the most stunning features is a 49-inch screen, which merges human with machine through speech and facial recognition. Eye tracking and touch functions provide for an ultra-light, two-seater with a passenger cabin that can be attached either to a car or the flight module, and then driven away, all autonomously, of course.

The luxury marque is creating semi-autonomous VTOL technology that will assist in bringing forth the “next generation” of VTOL taxis, and is significantly in line with the luxury vehicle maker’s ethos by delivering completely seamless luxury design, including the interiors.

“FLYING TAXIS ARE ON THE WAY” A recent study showed demand for VTOLs will rise in the next 10 years, and so will supply. It’s been predicted that the fixed-wing VTOL market will grow from an estimated $2 billion to $13.6 billion.

It seems everyone wants to get in on the action of the VTOL aircraft movement. Luxury automotive companies are becoming part of this upswing, and looking to create the next best option. Audi’s Pop. Up Next concept, a hybrid vehicle that combines a self-driving car and passenger drone, is being touted as the future for transporting people into, around and out of cities crawling with traffic. Italdesign chief executive Jörg Astalosch said, “Various players will define the rules of urban mobility in the future. We are proud to collaborate with Airbus, in the aerospace industry, to investigate solutions for future mobility.” Astalosch envisions Pop.Up Next as a flexible on-demand concept that could open up mobility in another dimension for people in large cities. To fully understand how an on-demand service of this kind operates, Audi is conducting tests in South America in 2019. So now it seems that Audi isn’t just dreaming about its future, as it shows off its latest development, a soon-to- be-flying taxi prototype and 1:4 scale modular concept that the German carmaker is developing with Airbus and Italdesign, combining drone and car. Pop.Up Next shares speed of flight with the versatility of a ground autonomous driven vehicle. You don’t even need to step out of your passenger pod. Once you land, you’re ready for the road. Audi says its customers “will benefit from this multi-model operation, in the air and on the road.” “More and more people are moving to cities and

more and more people will be mobile thanks to automation,” said Bernd Martens, Audi procurement and IT board member. “If we succeed in making a smart allocation of traffic between roads and airspace, people and cities can benefit in equal measure.” Audi’s Pop.Up Next could be the first VTOL driving car to transport people in cities quickly and conveniently, both on the road and in the air and possibly even over water. Industry competitors could have functional flying taxis, they say, by 2023. Looks like we aren’t just dreaming.
Thanks to Audi, flying vehicles really are around the corner. Learn more about Pop.Up Next with Italdesign, 39 011 6891611 and italdesign.it/project/pop-up-next

The Humvee Is Back, and You’ll Love Its New Features
“Quality American-made craftsmanship hearkens back to the iconic Humvees of the past.”

t the forefront of the new resto-mod movement is Mil-Spec Automotive, a small boutique builder in the American heartland.
This bespoke builder has taken the luxury off-road industry head on, fulfilling a need that connoisseurs have been awaiting for over a decade now. Yes, it’s hard to believe, but it’s been over a decade since the iconic American General Hummer line was discontinued. Ever since the original Humvee models were released in 1992−2006, it suffered major backlash from buyers during production, particularly because of the uncomfortable interior and shortage of power from its engine supply. However, to this day, the H1 is still highly regarded as one of the best off-road, military-based civilian vehicles ever built, minus the comforts of its insides, of course. Enter a new era, thanks to a firm based in Detroit, Mich., right in the U.S. automotive capital. The H1 Humvee is back and more luxurious than ever. With a resto-mod update, this re-imagined version of the iconic H-1 from Mil-Spec Automotive is back. MSA’s in-house techs disassemble, examine and rebuild or replace every single component on these trucks.
Luxur y Buyers Guide
Mil-Spec previously released its first “Launch Edition,” delivering its prospective buyer a hand-built and assembled re-imagination of the luxury Humvee off-road adventure vehicle. Here we can see the iconic re-imagined Hummer in detail.

From the heart of America, their vehicles deliver quality American-made craftsmanship that hearkens back to the iconic Humvees of the past. They have created what they believe is the most perfect Humvee currently being offered in the global marketplace. And we tend to agree.

Mil-Spec Automotive was founded with a single goal in mind: to create and deliver the best trucks on the planet. With their out-of-the box mentality, the MSA team’s three founders Adam Mitchell, Chris Van Scyoc and Ian Broekman deliver a new vision to what the iconic AM General Hummer H1 should have been all along. Here at the heart of the Mil-Spec H1 build is full bodywork designed in Detroit and tested on 100 acres of pavement, dirt, and water hazards.

All work is done by a small team of Hummer specialists, who rebuild each H1 starting from the ground up, with a torn-down donor truck that is rebuilt by hand. MSA engineers strip out and weld up the bodywork. Mil-Spec said the H1 body is later prepared with a corrosion-resistant bedliner-type material on the outside and a thermal ceramic coating for the underside. The textured exterior body coatings, powder-coated components and ceramic under-body coatings keep this beast protected and insulated. To finish off, the frame and components are all powdered with Kevlar coatings to ensure long-lasting durability against harsh elements. The harsh winters in Middle American metropolises know a thing or two about driving in rough weather. This being said, the H1s are a few hundred pounds lighter than a stock Hummer. Each vehicle is also equipped with a muscular hand-built 500-horsepower 6.6-liter turbo diesel LBZ V8 engine, capable of a hefty 1,000 foot pounds of torque along with an Allison 1000 6-speed transmission to power this overhauled masterpiece. The Mil-Spec team says they even hit a top speed of 96 miles per hour.
“MIL-SPEC AUTOMOTIVE WAS FOUNDED WITH ONE CLEAR GOAL IN MIND, CREATE THE BEST TRUCK ON THE PLANET.” Now this may seem like a lot of power, but with an estimated curb weight of over 7,000 pounds, even if lighter than before, she’s still a beast. This four tons of truck sits about 16 inches off the ground and holds a clearance as wide as a semi-truck. Mil-Spec even decided to widen the body an additional 7 inches, and has increased its track width by 8 inches. Some of that extra width is due to 3.5-inch fender flares, which cover the 20-inch wheels adorned by Nitto Ridge Grappler tires.
All of these options are available to customers. MSA is working closely with its clients to deliver upon their chosen specifications. The automaker also offers a host of other bespoke options to tailor the vehicle to your desires. On the outside, the general look of the Hummer H1 sports a dark palette of black and grey; the chassis is also painted in a similar tone of metallic gray with low gloss and black accents. With our quick look inside the cabin’s interior, we can see MSA did away with the boring original Humvees insides, and revamped it with a new modern look that brings the H1 into the 21st century, in a slick-stylish way. The interior is also completed in house by MSA Design Works, which has restyled the cabin with topto-bottom enhancements, giving the truck an overall cosmetic facelift but not disregarding the iconic traits of the original Hummer’s rugged exterior look. Each interior is measured and adjustments made before it’s sent to the upholstery team for a refitting.
The H1 has been completely re-envisioned by the team, ready to hit the street or dirt. It’s only being sold in reserved slots, so contact Mil-Spec Automotive directly to learn more about custom pricing and availability. As the civilian versions of this military grade-vehicle never quite offered much luxury in stock form, here Mil-Spec added a few extra bells and whistles. The company tested and built the machines out of their 60,000-square-foot warehouse somewhere hidden in Wichita, Kansas. Mil-Spec has built three of these test models and abused each and every one of them on and off the road while testing in this offroad paradise. The standard Mil-Spec truck costs about $218,500, including the donor Hummer H1. That’s only the beginning. Optional features can bump up the price of this build; however, its deluxe package that includes all the bells and whistles can fetch upwards of $300,000. We never knew we wanted an H1 until today.

Here they use re-enforced 6061-T6 ten-gauge aluminum sheets, with every one of the interior panels made from hardened aerospace high grade aluminum, 26 panels to be precise. Interiors are completely re-imagined, creating a lush cabin atmosphere with customized gauges apparently inspired by high-end tourbillions in luxury timepieces.
Similar to a luxury yacht interior that’s been re-designed with custom leather-wrapped seats, it has a premium marine-grade audio amp, heated windshield and power windows. The cabin floor is triple-layered with a sound-deadening spray and a mix of marine-grade vinyl and canvas surround the waterproofed cabin. With its JL Audio premium sound system and LED interior lighting, the whole package has been designed to be water-resistant.

An upgrade to its individual suspension, also designed in house by MSA, promises owners better riding ability on- and off-road. MSA also has added air-suspended front seats with heating, cooling and massage chair functions, making this Hummer a more comfortable ride on the asphalt indeed. Adding a tri-level insulation system that is built into each of the re-designs also ensures a smoother ride by keeping road noise and ambient sounds to a bare minimum.

MERCEDES’ SILVER ARROW

Racing Forward in Style, WHEN THE PAST MEETS THE FUTURE
S
imply put, you feel something when you see a Mercedes-Benz. And the Vision EQ Silver Arrow is no different.
From the outset, Mercedes-Benz stood for sporting triumphs as well as comfort and luxury. The cars bearing the famous three-pointed star have put their reputation to the test time and time again—on the road and on the racetrack. The first vehicle bearing the name “Mercedes” was delivered to its owner in 1900. As the first modern motorcar, it boasted 35 horsepower and was called a racing car. Since inception, the Mercedes-Benz marque has mastered the art of demanding the consumer’s attention. Its visual impact is driven by superior automotive designing, the company’s reputation as craftsmen of supreme quality engineering, and the iconic monochromatic badge. The understated design element commands respect and has always been a part of the Mercedes-Benz ethos. You can sense the amount of care that is put into the design, colors, and shaping of Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Communicating this ethos to consumers is very important to the company. Gorden Wagener, chief
design officer at Daimler AG, said, “Over 80 years ago, the historic Silver Arrows demonstrated that Mercedes-Benz was a pioneer when it came to speed thanks, among other things, to their streamlined shape, the Vision EQ Silver Arrow draws on that legacy. “Intended for acceleration and driving pleasure, it embodies progressive luxury and provides an insight into the future of our design. As a result, the show car drives the design idiom of our new EQ product and technology brand to the top.” The EQ model’s smooth carbon fiber body brings sleek avant-garde style and a distinct luxury aesthetic. With its futuristic-classic design, the Vision EQ Silver Arrow embodies the company’s storied history and looks ahead to the future. “We created a new legend of the Silver Arrow for the next century,” Wagener said. The iconic Silver Arrow gets an electric makeover. Eschewing the massive 12-cylinder engine of previous Silver Arrows, the EQ Silver Arrow offers an electric, eco-friendly ride. The streamlined silhouette is approximately 5.3 meters long (17.5 feet) and approximately one meter shallow (3.2 feet). It’s a slender one-seater with a central driving position. The body structure is made from carbon fiber, as are the front splitter, front

trim, and side skirts. The Vision EQ Silver Arrow concept is a tribute to its record-breaking predecessor, with an output of 550 kilowatts (750 horsepower). The thin rechargeable battery in the underbody has a useable capacity of approximately 80 kilowatts to provide a calculated range of over 400 kilometers (248 miles). Side air vents help to cool the battery. Power supply comes from the 738 horsepower and a battery pack, helping it achieve a range of more than 250 miles per charge.

The concept was designed to look like cool liquid metal, and we’d say it fares pretty well in that regard with special thanks to Claudia Braun, Mercedes-Benz senior manager of color and trim. Her team created the multiple layers of paintwork with Alubeam silver, which appears as liquid metal over the top. The paint’s look was achieved using particles that flex and form to fit the body of the car like a glove or a metallic skin of sorts. Braun said, “The particles are very thin, and flat. I can best describe it like they had organized themselves on the shape of the car like a mural, creating this metallic skin that emphasizes the design more than any other paint or finish.” Braun’s team is now working on paints that contain special cooling pigments, which Mercedes-Benz hopes to offer in the near future. The interior of the Vision EQ Silver Arrow represents values of progressive luxury. Design prowess combines timeless aesthetic appeal in this futuristic rendering. From the moment you see the driver’s cockpit, the interior has a commanding feel with its traditional, high-quality materials.
Saddle-brown genuine leather graces the seat and the wrapped steering wheel, with brushed aluminum throughout the interior along with the solid walnut and dark coniferous softwood pinstripes on the flooring. The leather-wrapped steering wheel has a button that gives the option of masking the whine of the electric motors with a synthetic soundtrack of either anF1 car or a V8 AMG GT. This soundless Silver Arrow contrast is an intentional merging of past and future styles. The partially freestanding multi-spoke wheels with non-rotating hubcaps glossed in partial trim on the wheels, again provided by Braun and her team, are just another highlight and innovative form of luxury. Each wheel’s 168 spokes are made of lightweight aluminum, all painted in a beautiful rose gold color, as is typical with the EQ models.
Metallic covers hide parts of the 24-inch wheel design. Offering exceptional traction and correspondingly fast acceleration, the Vision EQ Silver Arrow has slick 255/25 R 24 tires in front and 305/25 R 26 tires at the rear. With more attention to detail, tire partner Pirelli also helped customize the star pattern on the tire treads. The rear diffuser is reminiscent of motorsports. Two extendable rear spoilers act as an air brake, increasing wind resistance when deceleration is desired. A four-point seatbelt holds the driver securely in place. The pedals adapt to the driver’s own stature, with a controller on the seat for pedal adjustment. Matching the exterior paint finish is an interior sidewall of luxurious, gray suede. Looking at the cockpit, a large curved panoramic screen with a back projection displays the 3-D image of the driver’s surroundings. As the marque incorporates the latest technology, the push of a button on the steering wheel shows a virtual racetrack on screen just ahead of the vehicle, providing artificial intelligence assistance for a race against a past or present Silver Arrow. The driver can see his opponents ahead or behind as a “ghost.” The Virtual Race Coach AI assistance functions can even help you become a better driver during the assimilated race. Using the double screen, this virtual racing feels like a video game or holodeck in the cockpit.
23
This latest creation brings you back to the era of the W125 1937 Silver Arrow. Paying homage to the brand’s iconic land speed record, the Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow brings technological prowess with its lightweight chassis and supercharged 595 brake horsepower (444 kilowatts) W125, an aero-optimized Grand Prix-derived car. With it, Rudolf Caracciola achieved 432.7 kilometers per hour on the A5 Autobahn between Frankfurt and Darmstadt. This speed record on public roads stood until November 2017.

The Silver Arrow concept was showcased during this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. While the Silver Arrow is only for show right now, the future is wide open. With this modern update to its retro-radical physique, the Mercedes Vision EQ Silver Arrow is from the future and the past. Now, how do we get a test drive?

First introduced to the world in December 2015, an egg-shaped futuristic design is now available for purchase. Earlier this year, the Ecocapsule unveiled the first unit of production from a limited series of just 50, released in dramatic fashion as a helicopter dropped the eggshaped sphere atop a building in the city center. The Ecocapsule is a self-sustaining, mobile and intelligent micro-dwelling unit that can be placed virtually anywhere. Think of it as the little egg that could. The oval abode allows you to be in remote places completely out of reach of civilization or infrastructure, while still retaining all amenities of normal living. You can use it as a cottage, a caravan or even a pop-up hotel. The unique and original design makes the Ecocapsule a piece of art that stands out in every imaginable environment. After years of development, the egg-shaped housing concept was entered into the 2009 Andes Sprout So-

ciety Idea Competition. Ecocapsule’s founder Sona Pohlova and her partner Tomas Zacek of Slovakia-based Nice Architects (now Nice & Wise) started by turning their egg concept into a smart ecohome on wheels. The Ecocapsule’s original design has been evolving since then. Recently, Nice & Wise introduced the smart home app to accompany its mini housing. Its talented designers first came up with the concept for a tiny, self-contained micro-home as their take on “frontier dwelling” for scientists, photographers, rangers or extreme tourists who want to set up camp in the great outdoors. We are thinking, move over Airstream—the mountains are calling, and this is a new competitor to the Nest. They refined the original design by making the unit more compact for easier mobility and focused primarily on increasing energy independence, making it a viable solution for long-term, ecofriendly, offgrid substainablility. This micro-luxury egg-shaped dwelling runs on renewable energy direct from Mother Nature. With 600-watt high-efficiency solar cells and silent 750watt wind turbine-producing energy, it has a backup 10-kW battery, storing up the excess energy for use during periods without sufficient sunlight or wind. The high-capacity batteries ensure user luxury and comfort are never interrupted, even in case of a temporary resource outage. The Ecocapsule also features plug-in outlets that enable charging of batteries for vehicles, laptop, phones or whatever you may need charged. Everything here is connected as a smart home system. Its spherical form maximizes morning dew and rainwater collected from its membrane water filters, transforming it into clean drinking water.
According to Ecocapsule’s creative communication director, Matej Gyárfáš, “Ecocapsule has been designed as a house. A tiny, mobile house, but a house nevertheless.” The Ecocapsule team doesn’t really see it as a travel trailer at all. However, if your desire finds you perching on a mountaintop or overlooking a sprawling beach, your Ecocapsule can help you to be entirely self-sufficient. The company has optimized it for transportation, which allows for shipping globally. The unit’s shipping cost is around $2,400 from Slovakia to New York City, and the 3,300-pound unit fits snugly in standard international shipping containers. Specially designed trailers allow you to tow the Ecocapsule by car, turning it into a fully functional caravan if you so desire. Camping in the wild will never be the same. Fully equipped with a built-in lounge/ work space that turns into a bed at night, with a folddown table and kitchenette with running water, a composting toilet and yes, a hot shower included–all of Ecocapsule’s luxuries make it similar to a hotel. Ecocapsule is roughly 88 square feet of usable space. The efficient spacing structure allows you to enjoy the convenience of household facilities in off-grid conditions. Each of the 50 limited-edition offerings is numbered with its own customizable exterior, color and finishings. Matej says there’s a good reason for the price point of the first 50. “We are producing them piece by piece—hence the exclusive tag.”

Based on Nice & Wise’s latest tech innovations, the Ecocapsule’s smart home system allows control over all the necessary features with the tip of your finger. An attractive thick wall at 7.8 inches thick helps protect against the elements and reduce thermal loss. Edward S. Curtis, c. 1899
“If White man wants to live in peace with the Indian, he can live in peace. There need be no trouble. Treat all men alike. Give them the same law. Give them all an even chance to live and grow. All men were made by the same Great Spirit Chief. They are all brothers. The earth is the mother of all people and all people should have equal rights upon it. “ — Chief Joseph

n December 1905, photographer and ethnographer Edward S. Curtis met with J.P. Morgan, one of the world’s wealthiest and most powerful men. Curtis pitched him a grand vision, one of the largest, most expensive and certainly most ambitious publishing projects in North American history. Morgan listened intently, then turned Curtis down. Only after seeing Curtis’s photographs did he change his mind. Unknown to either of the men at the time, history had just been set into motion, a history that would take 25 years and 35,000,000 (in 2018 dollars) to complete, but in the end would produce Curtis’s grand masterpiece, “The North American Indian.”

The 20-volume, 20-portfolio book set cataloged, in exhaustive detail, over 80 American Indian tribes throughout the West, including their songs, their language, their lifeways and customs, their sacred narratives and, most memorably, their faces in Curtis’s masterful photographs.
Eventually his work found new audiences. And as his status in the art and ethnographic worlds rose, so did the price of complete original sets of “The North American Indian.” Today, sets in excellent condition can sell for up to $3,000,000. Because of those high prices, this magnificent set of books, once described as the greatest publishing accomplishment since

While often unsung, Curtis was a true Renaissance Man—a quintessential American hero, photographer, ethnographer, filmmaker, multimedia artist, and publisher, yet he died penniless and unknown in 1952. The burden of creating the books left Curtis a broken man, and he was hospitalized for nearly two years at the end of the project.
31
The book project, and its long and expensive production cycle, bankrupted both Curtis and his publishing company, and with the one-two punch of World War I and the Great Depression, Curtis and his adventures to Native villages and mesas would fall from headlines into obscurity.

the King James Bible, is now out of reach for most collectors, museums, and libraries, making it even harder for the public to be able to view them. It’s here in the story that Christopher Cardozo enters the picture. Cardozo discovered some of Curtis’s work in the early 1970s, and over the past decades has amassed a stunning collection of Curtis photographs, books, and other related objects. Seeing a need for a new book set that researchers, collectors, and American Indians could look through without a multi-million-dollar price tag, Cardozo sought to increase access to this magnificent publication with an artisanal republication. “Many people consider ‘The North American Indian’ to be the most important set of rare books ever created in the United States. It’s certainly one of the most beautiful, and a unique window into the history of the American West and the lifeways of Native American people and their heritage,” Cardozo said. “All but a few of the original sets are in libraries and major institutions, and it can be nearly impossible to get access to them. And even if you do, you’d be lucky to be able to see even 10 percent of the entire publication.” Not only did Cardozo republish Curtis’s magnum opus, he did it at a level that even Curtis would appreciate. The republication was completed in exacting detail using the highest-quality printing and materials. He and his team have spent more than 40,000 hours scanning and remastering the original images, proofing and re-proofing thousands upon thousands of pages, not to mention 2,500,000 words of text, while agonizing over the design and layouts. It’s all in a gorgeous package with custom binding for a select few at a fraction of the original collection’s value.
“Mr. Curtis, because of the singular combination of qualities with which he has been blest, …has been able to do what no other man has ever done…” ~Theodore Roosevelt
The content is identical to the original throughout, but the presentation is enhanced for contemporary readers. The end result is a modern-day version of what Curtis had created over a century before: 2,234 photographs and illustrations, over 5,000 pages of text, and more than 2,500,000 words. Curtis’s 20 individual portfolios are all condensed into five bound portfolio volumes in Cardozo’s republication for ease of viewing and handling. All told, this may be the largest, most ambitious republication project in American history, fitting considering Curtis’s original project was also one of the largest and most ambitious in American history.

“I like a man who attempts the impossible” ~J.P. Morgan
“We prefer to refer to the republication as a ‘re-creation,’ because we have made so many enhancements to improve the experience for contemporary readers and viewers,” Cardozo said. “Ours is not better—the originals are truly extraordinary—but ours is more easily readable and accessible, and the photographs are exceptional. The improved typeface and layout enhances readability, and the print quality is superb. “It has been a herculean task for our small group of artisans, but it pales in comparison with what Curtis had to do. He created the foundation, the template. Against nearly impos-
sible odds, Curtis did what no other man did, or could.” Cardozo’s custom edition republication of “The North American Indian,” limited to just 75 sets, and it is already nearly sold out. These sets, which sell for $33,500, are a mere fraction of the price of an original set and are well within reach for many museums, institutions, and private collectors. “Right now, we’ve sold sets to many private collectors and institutions, including Harvard and the Morgan Library and Museum. We have also facilitated donations to over 15 tribal colleges, and are hoping to place another 20 sets with additional tribal colleges throughout the United States,” Cardozo said. “Institutions are purchasing the sets, so they can make the work accessible to researchers, students, native populations and the general public. Collectors want it for the pure beauty and the extensive text.” Responding to strong demand, Cardozo and his team have added a second, more affordable edition. The content is identical, but with little handiwork involved, is significantly more affordable than the limited edition version.

For Cardozo, like Curtis, this labor of love is a crowning achievement of his long career. And now their stories are intertwined in a remarkable way. “Curtis’s work is monumentally important, and ultimately, I want as many people to enjoy it as possible,” Cardozo said. “‘The North American Indian’ was the crown jewel of Curtis’s career. It is also a unique and powerful record of extraordinary cultures, access to which is critical for native people in recovering from multi-generational trauma. It’s important for everyone that it be seen today.”

ou may have heard in fall 2017 that multi-billionaire oil and energy tycoon and philanthropist T. Boone Pickens announced he was looking for a buyer for his prized Mesaa Vista Ranch, a vast swath of Texas land encompassing nearly 100 square miles that he began accumulating back in the 1970s. For Pickens, selling this 65,000-acre oasis was what he called a new beginning. “Why sell?” you might ask.

Profiled in Architectural Digest, The Land Report, The Wall Street Journal and countless other publications and newspapers over the years, this ecology compound is known for its tranquil rolling hills, wildlife habitats, quail hunting and stunning architectural features. The story goes, T. Boone Pickens started in 1971 with a modest 2,900 acres, buying then what was called the Reynolds Ranch with its accompanying corrugated-metal feed house, later dubbed the Cake House, which still remains on the property. He used it as a place to stay warm, lunch and take naps during his frequent hunting trips on the property.
runway. That’s right: Boone Pickens built a 6,000foot runway and 25,000 square-foot hangar for his private aircraft. The hangar itself has a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment upstairs, exclusively for pilots. And by the way, you needn’t leave the ranch to practice your golf swing, because the property comes with two fairways and greens. Adorning the ranch also is a chapel, and more water than one can ever imagine in the Texas Panhandle. That’s just the starting point.
Since then, Pickens has dedicated almost 50 years to breathtaking architectural and wildlife improvements while cultivating (and accumulating) the lands surrounding this Texas home. Since the first acquisition, Pickens amassed upwards of 22 times the property’s original size. This enormous property is baptized by roughly 12 miles of manmade waterfalls, creeks and lakes. Going for 100 square miles, the land runs northeast of Amarillo, Texas. Mesa Vista borders the Canadian River on the south side in Roberts County. All told, the enormous ranch, which comes with a long list of additional perks and amenities, carries an eye-popping $250 million price tag.
The land teems with wildlife, including quail, antelope, and white-tailed deer. The property boasts the Main Lodge (33,000 square feet under one roof, with a 30-seat movie theater). Everything you see is appointed in exquisite detail, including hand-carved wood paneling throughout the home. The picturesque European villa-inspired lake house amasses 12,000 square feet in living space, with 4,000 square feet of patios. Its stained-glass front door last resided in Bing Crosby’s home.
Forbidden Fruit Luxur y Buyers Guide
The property even comes with water and mineral rights. The ranch has minimal cattle grazing, as Pickens preferred to let the land revert to pristine prairie conditions, much as it has existed in centuries past. A substantial portion of the ranch has not been grazed in more than 20 years, as Pickens quietly implemented his own multi-decade program to help the land heal.
39
The lodge rises up from fertile grounds where streams flow and spill into a vast lake and aqueduct that Pickens built into the stunning landscape. Mesa Vista is water-rich, with miles and miles of creeks and nearly 20 lakes of varying sizes constructed over the course of 20 miles. And, Pickens says the property offers “the world’s best quail hunting.”

Over time, he has invested millions in wildlife management, programs and facilities. Mesa Vista has been a labor of love for Pickens—so much so that it has occupied the better part of his life. And now he intends that a lot more good will come from the sale of the sprawling ranch.

Pickens has earmarked the proceeds to benefit the eponymous T. Boone Pickens Foundation, which supports various charitable organizations, delivering on a variety of philanthropic commitments. Pickens cares deeply about his legacy and has expressed interest in passing along the property to a person or entity whose conservation ethics may align with his own. As a member of The Giving Pledge, his lifelong charitable giving exceeds $1 billion. In a brochure for the ranch, Pickens calls the place “an oasis in the Texas Panhandle.” Growing up in Holdenville, Okla., he had once walked five miles from town down to the Canadian River—and back— to earn a Boy Scout Merit Badge. “Today, 80 years later, that very same Canadian River remains a prominent part of my life,” Pickens said. His vision for Mesa Vista and its future remains as vivid as it was when he began purchasing that land nearly a half-century ago. His love of nature inspired him to create a place where wildlife could thrive. Pickens often says his two favorite things in life are making money and giving it away, in that order. He didn’t buy the property solely for his own benefit. Enjoy your virtual visit to this sprawling oasis. If you are passionate about conserving it and happen to have a quarter of a billion dollars on hand, you may one day be able to call it your own. The ranch is turnkey—whoever buys it gets the furniture, vehicles, farming equipment and furnishings (exclud-

Purchase also includes the buildings and one used solely as his hunting dog kennel (12,000 square feet, with enough space for 50 bird dogs), along with all of the property’s tranquil rolling hills, its natural wildlife habitat and amazing architecture. So, yes, it is true. T. Boone Pickens’s ranch in the Texas Panhandle is listed for $250 million (with a little ecology thrown in). Quail and wildlife are included. Who says money can’t buy you happiness?

“And so in his mountain home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, where he spends his summers in an almost primeval environment, he is watching the majesty of the storm, the splendor of the sunset, the gray swirl of fog clouds, and the flowing change of season upon season.” - Elliott Daingerfield (1932’)

at burglars come with varying levels of sophistication, and many of those targeting more expensive homes are professional thieves who are often never captured throughout their entire careers. According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics report on property crime rates—including burglary, larceny and motor vehicle thefts—there are roughly 2.5 million burglaries committed a year. Sixty-six percent of those are related to home breakins. Police usually solve only 13 percent of reported burglary cases due to lack of witnesses or physical evidence. A burglary takes place every 18 seconds in the United States. That adds up to nearly 200 per hour, and approximately 4,800 per day. These startling statistics also highlight the fact that burglary is a serious crime you need to be aware of. The good news is, there is a safe that is built to protect you and your luxury lifestyle. Burglars usually go to the master bedroom first. Thieves look for easy things to carry, and watches and jewelry are first on their list. Unfortunately, most people don’t always hide their valuable items carefully, and burglars know it. For more than 2,000 years, safes were primarily created as an artistic endeavor, with intricate designs that were protected with simple and easy-to-break (or pick) locks. Throughout the ages, mankind has sought to protect its valuables and even vital documents from the threat of fires, thieves, weather and natural disasters. In centuries past, much of the written record of our early human civilization was lost to Father Time because of this lack of protection. Efforts to protect our legacy dates back even to the ancient Egyptians who buried their scrolls deep within the pyramids. The Assyrians buried duplicates of important documents in separate locations. The Greeks carved their important records on ivory slabs. Julius Caesar filled his iron boxes but found that the metal readily conducted the heat of fire. Chinese feudal lords built underground vaults and stationed trusted guards for their protection.
Patented advanced materials and cutting-edge technologies—including biometric fingerprint entry, GPS anti-theft systems, home automation integration and automatic watch-winder panels combine to create the most finely crafted and secure luxury watch safes on the planet. A Chronos is as convenient as it is impregnable. It helps you relax and enjoy your good fortunes in safety and style. No longer something to hide in a closet, in the floor under a rug or behind a false wall, this safe is a beautiful piece of furniture to be flaunted alongside the original luxury items it is meant to store. The Chronos starts from a modest $58,750.

In the 15th century, traveling merchants used portable steel safes for transporting their gold or coins or other valuable possessions. In the last 200 years, great advances in metallurgy and enabled strongboxes, vaults and strong rooms. These early designs that gave their owners maximum protection for their valuables turned into the more permanent “vault,” which we now call a bank safe. Today’s security for our possessions is the result of technological progress and proper testing. Al Farrow Sculpts Religion’s Troubled Path In a groundbreaking exhibition, Farrow treads faith’s violent edges with unexpected materials and compassion for human ritual.

l Farrow’s latest installment is perhaps the most unique and profound exhibit we’ve seen in recent years, now on display at the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco. “Divine Ammunition” brings 24 mind-bending rendered sculptures of churches, synagogues, mosques, mausoleums, Jewish ritual objects and Catholic reliquaries. The artist examines the relationship between religion and violence, peace and brutality, the sacred and the unholy. Religious objects are rendered in guns and bullets, bringing the phrase “holy war” into an entirely new light. Tools of social commentary, these exquisite sculptures are both architecturally authentic and uncanny. From a menorah welded from handguns to burned-out churches, these scaled replicas of cathedrals, synagogues and mosques are hand-sculpted from artillery shells, tank parts and bullet casings. Whether topped with a crucifix, six-pointed star or crescent moon, they showcase diverse ideologies across religions, history and war. “Looking around the world today, we will see conflicts that have to do with different religions everywhere,” Farrow said, between Buddhists and Mus-
lims, Muslims and Jews, Christians and Muslims, and Christians and Jews. It’s “everywhere you can look.” Farrow’s focus on sectarian, inter-religious violence narrates its effect on several branches of organized religions, exposing the unfortunate repetition in history of these inescapable battles. To research his subjects, Farrow visited libraries to read up on the various religions. You could say he was on a quest for the truth and seeking this inner inspiration. When he was deep in his research, he said he found one main element that really bothered him about any particular religion—it was that organized religion seems to be driven by power, control and money. “And it doesn’t even matter which religion. Its hypocrisy that’s just the simplest example, but there’s many forms of hypocrisy in the religions,” Farrow said. “They don’t live what they preach. “No matter which religion I had looked at still boiled down to the same things. Religion is almost always a part of the violence accompanying a war … so often it’s basically ubiquitous. Religion is used by the most powerful to get people excited, to get people to think that their existence is threatened or something to Menorah XII Guns, Gun parts, Steel, Bullets 32 1/4” H x 15” dia. base, 2012 Fence Menorah V
get them to fight. It’s been used again and again over time, and ironically it works, because it’s been used so often over time.” This exhibition features visually stunning and unsettling symbolic sculptures that will stir up deep emotions and capture the contrasts between religious violence and peace, the sacred and the profane. These works portray divine inspiration combined with sophisticated social commentary. The exhibition starts with “The Bombed Mosque,” a monumental sculpture that took the artist an entire year to create. The mosque is built in traditional Islamic style and architectural techniques that give it authenticity. Its elaborate patterning is a defining element in ancient Islamic art. The piece is formed by alternating oxidized and polished brass shell casings. Standing in sharp contrast to the almost meditative pattern of the decoration, the mosque’s dome bares a gaping hole on one side as the jarring juxtaposition addresses the conflict between sects within the same religion, specifically the Shia and Sunni denominations of Islam. One side appears bombed out, leaving behind carnage and its debris. The mosque sculpture is meticulously detailed, constructed with gold, silver and turquoise bullets, lead pellets, steel, guns and intricate inner-gun parts and shell casings. It was built with over 50,000 bullets and shell casings, amassing a stellar 780 pounds in total.
When constructing one of his sculptures, Farrow doesn’t just go out to a store and buy materials that might fit in a specific spot or fill a particular need. He can only work with what he has on hand or what he can find online. And Farrow just happens to have a large stash of weapons, submachine guns, pistols, rifles and more on hand. “I have shelves and shelves of shell cartridges, and bullets,” he said. He sources bullets from around the world, but doesn’t buy guns online, so is forced to rebuild them from parts. “I am 100 percent sure the authorities have been observing me. I have been told by many people in the gun culture that if you do more than two searches for Uzis, they are looking at you. And I have done more than 2,000 searches for Uzis.” Farrow’s viewpoint has shifted over the years when it comes to guns. When he was younger, he was “anti-ownership, but I’ve long since learned there’s not that much difference between a gun collector and an art collector. The criteria that collectors use is rarity, provenance, quality, and that’s the same criteria that both worlds of collectors use. There is an appreciation for the object itself, its history, as well as its quality. I think the art speaks for itself it doesn’t really need me.” That’s how he feels and it’s his goal, to address people’s thoughts and questions, in his own words, “Once I put it out there in the world, that’s it.

He christened this idea “Santo Guerra,” or saint of war. In all his work, Farrow aims to be respectful of religions because he respects people’s choices. “I recognized if I had used any actual saint or personage that really lived in Christianity, it could really offend people. So I then decided to use something that was made up. But I wanted it to be meaningful.
Farrow’s sculptures captivate with visually striking and emotionally confounding themes. “Revelation II” showcases the tall spire of a Protestant church reaching into the heavens. Constructed from guns, steel, polycarbonate and bullets, this impressive structure displays an etching of Albrecht Dürer’s “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.” And in “Menorah (Fence II),” two rigid lines of barbed wire support nine shell casings, each holding a solemn white candle, joining the pure with the sinister.

While browsing reliquaries in an underground Medici chapel in Florence, he discovered a small silver reliquary with a crystal face that had a finger in it. This object sparked the entire concept for the work we see today. “Immediately after seeing that reliquary, I had to go out and find a sketch pad. I started thinking up all these ideas, and remember thinking, I got to get some bullets and got to get some guns. I got to do this and will call it a trigger finger.”
In “The Skull of Santo Guerro II,” Farrow positions a human skull with its surrounding environment. A visual contradiction that hints again at an underlying discord is apparent in many of the works on view. Here, a human skull is trapped in a glass case. Laid atop oxidized ammunition casings, the form then gazes up at a brass crucifix. With materials such as deconstructed guns, bullets, bone, glass and steel, the four artillery shells in each corner of the sculpture point directly upwards, similar to missiles ready to launch.

The artist’s unique exploration began during a trip to Italy more than two decades ago, Farrow was confronted with a reliquary containing the remains of an ancient saint, which triggered the rest of the series we see here today.
Since all the romance languages feminized the word for war,” Farrow decided to masculinize “La Guerra,” as men “had been behind most of the wars over the centuries.”

That’s all they need.” Farrow’s thoughts turned to the contemporary political climate, and to religion, war, history, culture and faith, provoking reflections that ultimately drove his works featured in “Divine Ammunition.” His latest work, “The White House” avoids the fantasy of uncorrupted liberty evoked by the name and color of the structure. Instead, Farrow’s imposing sculpture, weighing almost a ton, is finished with a corroded exterior and somber palette, a subtle portrayal of how the façade of democratic ideals has become corrupted by abuse of power, and a reminder of the violence that constantly undercuts our current era, seen at churches, temples and schools. “Divine Ammunition” offers an opportunity to reflect on constructive creation through the materials and the sculpture’s final form. The exhibition is a striking visual commentary on religion, war and history against the backdrop of our culture and contemporary climate.

Like Western film and literature, Hazak’s bronzes are exciting and action-packed, and belie the careful thought he puts into each masterpiece. Their anatomy and modeling are just as important as their leather and hardware. His bronzes, some of which weigh up to 200 pounds, practically surge with life, capturing moments of his passion. Hazak thinks Western art remains a popular form today because it “symbolizes the space and freedoms we had at one time, and are losing every day. The freedom, the horses—they existed, but it was the foreigner who romanticized it.” Growing up in Israel, as a teenager he studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. Later touring Israel and Europe as a performer, he worked in his spare time developing clay sculptures. CART selected Hazak to produce the Mario Andretti Trophy.

His bronze sculptures depict forgotten vivid scenes of the Wild West, featuring Indians, cowboys and Western mountain men. “When you think of bronze, you think of cold and heaviness. I like to bring in motion, and put emotion into the faces of both men and animals. I like to give human feelings to animals.” Hazak succeeds with this goal, and more.

orking from his home studio in Scottsdale, Ariz., Elie Hazak doesn’t look like a character from an old Western. He prefers to wear shorts and T-shirts rather than denims. “Just call me the Jewish cowboy from Israel,” he says with a laugh.
wight Bennett’s path of artistry in wood is as unique as the work he sculpts. He created his first table in eighth grade back in 1963. A fifth-generation Arizona native, Bennett sold his early pieces around campus while attending Arizona State University, playing football and studying for a degree in art and technology. “Fantasia, Olive Wood 27” x12” 3”
As both a gifted athlete and artist, it appeared that his creative progress would have to wait when he was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams. His NFL career, however, was cut short from a tragic near-fatal automobile accident, and this path led Bennett back to pursuing his art. The artist turned his attention to wood vessels and sculptures as vehicles for his fine art. Inspired by the lyrical beauty of the female form, Bennett’s wooden vessels and sculptures represent the essence of the feminine shape. Inlaid with delicate silver strands that wander and weave through the wood, these abstract forms incorporate wood’s elegance and strength, enhanced with the fluidity of precious metal. Bennett’s “Silver Bullet” inlaid silver technique, which has dazzled art enthusiasts for years, has become his trademark. And the female body form in wood is another driving force in Bennett’s works. Inevitably, it is the how of the artistic rendering that becomes each sculpture’s creative signature. As Bennett explained, “That is what eventually attracts and cements the devotee’s interest in the finished product. The how is the most powerful and grabbing force for an artist to achieve. If we as artists can get the audience to wonder, how, the rest of the who, what and why will follow, keeping them looking forever.” Bennett uses only the finest woods such as mesquite, olive, holly or his favorite Arizona ironwood. His pieces inspire wonder and intrigue among his collectors. Bennett continues to work and create from his studio in Paradise Valley, Ariz. His art is proudly represented throughout the world in fine art galleries. Seeing really is believing.

A F inal Thought
“Blending Art, Science, and Magic”
Since his early years as a designer/goldsmith, Zoltan has always walked the path less travelled. His natural curiosity has led him to discover many, many innovations in metallurgy, material science, and advanced technologies for application in the jewelry arena. For 8 years he served an in-depth apprenticeship with European master goldsmiths and designers. Today he blends all these disciplines into one amazing art form, High Jewelry. The “Knightdreams” collection is but one example of his groundbreaking art. There is no other black metal like “Knightsteel”, the metal you see used in the body of the “Wizard’s Ring”. An award winning bespoke gentleman’s ring made with ‘Knightsteel’, impervious to scratching and eroding, inlayed with a patented 24kt, gold inlay technique, sleeved in 24kt. gold and 18kt gold inset compass stars. Truly a one of a kind masterpiece and a perfect example of Zoltan David’s custom order service to individuals throughout the world. His works have garnered dozens of national and international awards over the years, but his most recent accomplishment was in having the Famous “IRIS” moonstone necklace acquired by the Smithsonian Natural History Museum for “Permanent Display” a rare honor for any piece from the amazing and unparalled Smithsonian collection.
As Zoltan mentioned, “I love my work, I love what I do, to have a piece become part of American history is overwhelming to me, I am truly honored and grateful”
Seen here is the image of “Thvve Wizard’s Ring.” Cost: $42,000
Recently Zoltan has added another groundbreaking innovation to his body of work, the “Exotic Metals” collection. A journey into the mastery of light, using high strength Zirconium physical deposition coatings on steel and cobalt steels that have been textured and formed to bend light and color in unique ways, when married with precious metals and gems the result is an astounding display of beauty, color, texture and light. Zoltan David stands by the principle that luxury must function perfectly and feel divine. These are fundamentals included in every piece he designs. His bespoke clients return again and again enjoying the creative process alongside Zoltan and always adoring the outcome. As Zoltan says, “I do not follow trends. I liberate people from them.” If there has ever been a true rebel in the jewelry arts, Zoltan David is it.
The Zoltan David studio is located in Austin Texas, titled “DANCING METALS STUDIO” a very apt name for a workshop filled with mastery, imagination and the magic of creativity.
Zoltan is a Renaissance Man. He is the real deal when it comes to masters of the art and it is our utmost pleasure to introduce you to him. Stay tuned. We are sure there is more to follow. “The Wizard’s Ring.” Cost: $42,000 . For a consultation with Zoltan contact him directly. ZOLTANDAVID.COM
