Molly O’Brien and Vermeer
attend NAJYRC By Ellie Stine Masek
The North American Junior Young Rider Championships (NAJYRC) was held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky July 14 through July 18. Tucson High School Senior Molly O’Brien represented Arizona on the Junior Dressage Team from USDF Region 5. The NAJYRC is the only international competition for riders 14-21, sanctioned by the Federation Equestrian Internationale (FEI) in North America each year. This year participants from the United States, Canada, and Mexico competed in the disciplines of Dressage, Show Jumping, Eventing, Endurance and Para dressage. The event is staged as a mini Olympics with a Ground Jury of five international judges and strict drug rules.
“When Molly’s own horse died suddenly last
February Lynn stepped forward and offered Molly the ride on Vermeer.
”
Molly competed riding Vermeer, a thirteen year old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Lynn Boice, also of Tucson. When Molly’s own horse died suddenly last February Lynn stepped forward and offered Molly the ride on Vermeer. Molly and Vermeer began the qualifying process for NAJYRC in early March. They competed at designated qualifying horse shows in Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico for three months to earn their place on the Junior Team for USDF Region 5.
8 | THE CENTERLINE | AUGUST 2015
By the middle of June their position on the Team was verified and plans to travel to Kentucky were made with great enthusiasm. Several fund raising activities were planned, including a Tri-Tip barbecue with Freestyle demonstrations. Vermeer left for Kentucky on a trailer July 6th to arrive in Lexington with teammate horses from Utah and Colorado on July 11. The horses were allowed to move into the Kentucky Horse Park on Monday, July 13. The official presentation of the horses to the Ground Jury in the Jog for Soundness was Tuesday afternoon. Vermeer was accepted so they were officially entered to begin the Team Competition on Wednesday. Molly and Vermeer rode into the Rolex Arena, the site of the World Equestrian Games in 2010, on Wednesday afternoon. They were the last of four competitors from Region 5 to perform the Team Test and earned a score of 62.405%. The goal following the Team Test was to score in the top eighteen in the Individual Test on Friday. Then they would be able to ride in the Freestyle on Saturday afternoon. The warm up area for the Individual competition was much less hectic, so they had a quieter and more focused warm up. They rode down the ramp into the arena with more confidence and performed a beautiful test to score a 65.474%. That score placed them fifteenth out of fortyone horses, so they made the Freestyle! Saturday afternoon was the hottest, most humid day of the week with temperature and humidity in the mid 90’s. Molly and Vermeer had a short warm up and went into the arena to perform their Freestyle. They earned
their best score of the week, 66.775%! They finished twelfth out of eighteen competitors. The week spent at the NAJYRC was exciting, stressful, motivating, and memorable for everyone. Molly fulfilled her dream of competing successfully and representing our Region at the NAJYRC. Thank you to the Tucson Community for your support at the fundraisers and for all the good wishes posted on Social Media. A special thank you to Lynn Boice for loaning her lovely horse to Molly. The development of their partnership together was enjoyable and rewarding for everyone.
SHOW JITTERS? RELAX THE RIDER ... RELAX THE HORSE Horses can sense nervousness and tension and it will affect their performance. Reflexology is the practice of applying pressure to the feet and hands to reduce tension and induce deep relaxation sending signals that balance the nervous system and release endorphins, reducing pain and stress. Sessions available in home or at the show.

Nuggets Does your trainer or clinician or fellow rider have some quotes or pearls of wisdom that he or she states that crystallize a concept for your riding? If so, please email them to centerline@azdressage.org and they will be considered for publication.
Carl Hester: “You don’t have to spend a fortune on a horse for dressage - as long as the basic paces are there, the rest can be acheived through training. The main paces to look at are walk and canter, as with a bit of work a horse with a very normal trot can trot beautifully. In walk, the horse should use the whole of his body and have a good overtrack, where the hind foot lands in front of the print left by the front foot. A good canter has a bounding stride, with the hindleg jumping right underneath the horse and the front end lifted. Above all, though a good, natural rhythm is essential and is always more important than big movement.”
Important Deadline Reminders State Championships qualification requires a GMO membership. You can renew or join ADA online and pay with your favorite credit card or you can fill out a Membership Application form and mail in your check. Both methods are available on the ADA website here:

GAIG/USDF Regional Championships run October 16-18, 2015. Regionals are the qualifier for the USDF Dressage Finals. What do you need to compete at Regionals? Get to know the rules DR106 The Rein Back. 1. Rein back is a rearward diagonal movement with a two-beat rhythm but without a moment of suspension. Each diagonal pair of legs is raised and returned to the ground alternatively, with the forelegs aligned on the same track as the hindlegs. A four-beat rein back that is not clearly two-beat and diagonal, if done without resistance, could also be scored marginal or better. 2. During the entire exercise, the horse should remain “on the bit”, maintaining its desire to move forward. 3. Anticipation or precipitation of the movement, resistance to or evasion of the contact, deviation of the hindquarters from the straight line, spreading or inactive hind legs and dragging forefeet are serious faults. 4. The steps are counted as each foreleg moves back. After completing the required number of steps backward, the horse should show a square halt or move forward in the required gait immediately. In tests where a rein back of one horse’s length is required, it should be executed with three or four steps. 5. Reinback series (Schaukel) is a combination of two rein backs with walk steps in between. It should be executed with fluent transitions and the required number of steps.
The halt.

Barn Tip: Top 10 Reasons to Wear a Helmet Enough with the “it’s a dry heat” jokes; it is just plain hot. So hot that have you started to think that just because you are just taking your horse for a little walk you won’t wear your helmet. Please think again and re-read number 3, number 6 and number 8. 1. Safety helmets are 80 percent effective in preventing injury and death. 2. Brain injuries can be a life-changing experience. 3. There is no statistical correlation between skill level and injury likelihood. 4. Even a fall from a standing horse can be catastrophic. Your injury risk depends on the height from which you fall, as well as the speed at which you’re traveling. 5. The bulk of equestrian injuries occur in pleasure riding. 6. The walk is the most common gait at which riders suffer injuries. 7. Only 23 percent of mounted accidents occur when jumping. 8. Head injuries are cumulative. An original head injury can be made much worse by a dditional concussions. 9. Head injuries are expensive. Medical expenses for a minor concussion can amount to thousands of dollars. The most catastrophic head injuries average a cost of $4 million. 10. Riding is more dangerous than downhill skiing and motorcycling.

Western Dressage Judging Clinic This is an invitation to L graduates and candidates to better understand how to judge Western Dressage. We are holding this workshop September 26th and 27th, 2015 in Albuquerque, NM. Our aim for this weekend is to facilitate L graduates to feel more comfortable with judging Western Dressage. We will kick the weekend off with tests ridden on 26th of September and a chance for the L graduates to “Judge-withthe-Judge”: Debbie Riehl-Rodriguez from Colorado. We will start at 1:00 (check in starts at 11) at 4 Winds Equestrian Center in Estancia Valley, NM just about an hour from our host hotel or an hour and a half from the Albuquerque airport (ABQ). After every test there will be a break in case of questions or discussion pertaining to that ride. Auditors are not invited Saturday….this is the day for L graduates/candidates to concentrate. Sunday morning registration opens at 8 at our host hotel the Marriott Uptown on Louisiana NE with class commencing at 9 for ANYONE (trainers bring your riders!!) that wants to understand better what the judges are looking for in Western Dressage. The day will include not only judging and learning from videos, rule book discussions, but also plenty of conversation. We will break for a buffet lunch (included) at the hotel and continue through the afternoon. This is a chance to get your questions answered by Debbie Riehl-Rodriguez. She judged the first Western Dressage Association of America World Show in 2013. Debbie is a USEF “S” judge, USEF Western Dressage judge, Sport Horse Breeding judge, and a member of the USDF “L” faculty for judges training. She has trained several horses through Grand Prix and has earned her USDF Bronze, Silver, and Gold medals. As a participant you are encouraged to look at the Western Dressage Association of America’s website and their education pages: http://www.westerndressageassociation.org/western-dressage-rules-tests/ I would like to continue communications using the internet if possible. If that is good with you could you please send an e-mail to events@maythehorsebewithyou.net ? If you know anyone else that would like to participate in our Sunday workshop please feel free to pass on the e-mail address……..the more the merrier!! There will be a PayPal set up if you want to use a credit card. Checks will be accepted. Information below. There will be no registrations taken on our workshop weekend. When you register if you have any specific aims, concerns, or questions please include them so we can get to what is important to you. Looking forward to a fun and successful weekend!!
It’s about the journey……….
