Arizona Dressage Association

A Carrot in Exchange for a Journey

by Susan Crinnian

Thanks to the ADA Scholarship Award earned through a carrot, I was able to clinic three times with David Wightman. My goal, as most of us, was to continue to move up the ladder with my Dutch Warmblood, Titan. I wanted to move from Third Level to Forth Level which means moving from performing one flying change to tempis. In the journey up the dressage training pyramid, all previous training mistakes will come out both in the horse and rider as they advance to the next higher level. Addressing these mistakes and misunderstandings will optimize the journey with minimal wrong turns and dead ends. One option that augments the dressage journey is participating in the many clinics that the Arizona Dressage Association provides us in Arizona along with a variety of trainers. During our weather “favorable” months, we can have as many as three clinicians in Arizona in a month. Even if you don’t ride in a clinic, auditing can be a valuable educational opportunity. Much is to be learned by observation and listening. Maximizing exposure as both a rider and an astute observer will foster greater understanding in the foundations and details of riding to maximum potential. Arizona is so fortunate that David is willing to travel to Phoenix for clinics. David Wightman is a high performance Grand Prix rider with success coaching riders nationally and internationally. At the end of three clinics, and many hours of practice, I am almost ready for Fourth Level, Test 1. We have a few straightness and corner concerns to address and Titan and I will be on our way. In addition to David, Arizona is fortunate to have many great trainers who David Wightman Continued on Page 6

A Carrot in Exchange for a Journey (cont) come to clinic including Gina Smith, Conrad Schumacher, Heather Blitz, Tracey Lert, Lientje Schueler, Gerrit-Claes Bierenbroodspot, Mike Osinski, and so many more. Not taking advantage of these clinics is a lost opportunity for you and your horse. These world class trainers are here to help you be the best you can be. Obtaining an ADA Scholarship Award is golden, but one has to earn their carrot. The carrot is volunteering at ADA recognized and schooling shows. The more you volunteer, the more eligible you become for the yearly Scholarship Award. It is win-win for everyone. Our ADA shows can’t operate without volunteers. As a volunteer, one has the opportunity to meet more riders and to learn more about the sport. If you are given the task of bit, whip and spur checking, you learn why this is important. If one is a runner, one learns how frequently the tests must be picked up from the judges as everyone wants to know their score as soon as possible. If one works the awards table, one learns how quickly riders want to see their tests and scores. And volunteering for managing the gate keeps everyone prompt and safe. Thus the show continues successfully. Hopefully more will consider volunteering at shows. In eventing, everyone volunteers as there has to be volunteers not only for dressage and jumping, but for every jump on the cross country course. There would not be an event if not for most folks volunteering. I volunteer at every dressage show I attend, and sometimes at those I miss. It only takes a few hours and riding is only a few minutes. Dressage is a journey and volunteering is the carrot to get you more involved in our sport and passion.

“Thank you ADA and David Wightman!”

ADA is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit organization consisiting of a 12-person Board of Directors and a variety of Standing Committees engaged in and dedicated to advancing Dressage education in the State of Arizona. Volunteerism and service by its membership are the essential building blocks of accomplishing this goal for our local equine enthusiasts. A number of folks serving on the Board today have been in service to the organization for 10 years or more and we are currently seeking volunteers to help us move our organization forward! Are you by chance feeling “Tech-ie”?? We’re hoping to fill the following positions: • Webmaster • Score Compiling Database Maintenance

No Hunching By Susan Downs Parrish, Ph.D.

Yeah, I’m a name-dropper. Whatever my record for number of experts mentioned in one piece, it’s going to fall. “Here she goes again!” Uh-huh, but stick with me because I’m going to talk about engagement. Remember when I described hearing Charles de Kunffy’s voice in my head as I guided Maronda around a twentymeter circle, alternating between collected and medium trot? “Oh, did you think I meant collected trot? No, I meant medium trot.” After five steps of medium trot, de Kunffy interrupts, “Oh, did you think I meant medium trot? No, I meant collected trot.” As I went back and forth between collected and medium trot, Maronda’s responsiveness and energy increased, and another man’s voice came to me: Conrad Schumacher. “In a test, a rider performs fifty or sixty transitions. To improve your show performance, ride transitions when you practice.” Today, I rode a Gerd Zuther pattern, which goes like this. At F, pick up a working/collected canter and proceed to M; at M turn left to make a half circle of ten meters, returning to the track at R; continue in counter canter to P; at P drift right toward the center line and make a half circle of ten meters, arriving at F. Repeat the pattern, interspersing medium and collected canter, and renvers and counter shoulder-in along the rail. Lots of transitions were possible. I combined Charles, Gerd, and Conrad, and felt elasticity in Maronda’s frame. It came to me that by asking for more impulsion, the goal was to elicit her impulse to go forward. She didn’t have to travel twenty strides. Two energetic strides would suffice. Now Gerd’s voice came to me, “Don’t bore the horse.” So with the impulse to move forward in mind, consider how Schumacher leads his students to engage their horses by riding ten-meter circles in the corners of the dressage ring. Arthur Kottas has written about the importance of riding deep, correct corners. Like Schumacher, Kottas instructs his students to ride ten-meter circles in corners. From a twenty-meter circle at B or E, his students ride a circle of ten meters, then eight meters, and finally, six meters. He alerts a student if the horse’s haunches fall out, and sometimes, he encourages a student to create more bend than normal by vibrating the outside rein. Schumacher says that vibrating a rein is difficult. No kidding! I find myself wanting to hunch over and stare at the rein as I try to make it vibrate. Of course, hunching isn’t allowed in dressage. We have to sit tall, sink our heels below our toes, keep our elbows at our sides but relaxed, and, for heaven’s sake, look up. The notion of the vibrating rein reminds me of Wilhelm Müsler’s words in Riding Logic. (Don’t ask me how I remember this; I think it has something to do with age.) He wrote about showing the horse the way to the ground. The idea is to ride a twenty-meter circle, while holding the inside rein steady and carefully giving and taking with the outside rein. Maybe the vibrating rein is an advanced version of what Müsler envisioned. De Kunffy, Schumacher, and Kottas pay close attention to a rider’s position. De Kunffy likes to sculpt riders as they sit on a stationary horse. Schumacher encourages riders to take their legs away from the horse and relax the upper arms. Kottas encompasses what de Kunffy and Schumacher are going for by telling riders to sit as though they would drop to the ground and land on their feet with knees slightly bent, if the horse and saddle disappeared under them.

10 | THE CENTERLINE | NOVEMBER 2016

I tried this position. The man is onto something. Sometime during the day, bend your elbows and hold your arms at your side. Now let your arms hang straight. In which position does the force of gravity feel stronger? The force should feel stronger when the arms hang. If you sit as Kottas suggests, gravity will tug at your heels, and the balls of your feet will rest firmly in the stirrups. Sitting in the saddle à la Kottas no doubt comes more naturally to long-legged riders, but the effect on the seat and general posture is the same regardless of height. Remember the article in which I talked about Kottas telling us to hold the horse with our chest and belt? Sit in the Kottas position and you will automatically engage your chest and belt. The feeling in the seat is one of balance, alignment with the horse’s center of gravity. Ask any scientist and she will tell you that gravity is a mystery we take for granted. Sit as Kottas recommends, and the force of gravity will come to your aid. This is how it feels to be in harmony with the horse, ready to exert influence backed by the power of gravity. Wow! What did Maronda say when I emulated Kottas? Not a word. Usually, she “talks” to me. Susan Downs Parrish, Ph.D., on Maronda

Not this time. Instead of questions or comments, she responded with deeper corners, more engagement, and a greater willingness to go forward. My seat was directly connected to her hind legs. Her mind was calm, rather than busy. Double wow! The question is can I manage all this in a gait other than walk? Adopt the position suggested by the master of elegance on horseback, and you might experience the magic of physics. Time to quote Dr. H.L.M. Van Schaik, author of Misconceptions and Simple Truths In Dressage (1986), one of de Kunffy’s favorite books: Those who devote themselves to practice without science are like sailors who put to sea without rudder or compass and who can never be certain where they are going. Practice must always be founded on sound theory. (p.91) While enjoying the joys of gravity, don’t be so mesmerized that you forget to think about what you want to do with your powerful influence. Consider straightness, then think of Beth Baumert, author of When Two Spines Align. She knows the importance of straightness: “shoulder-fore forever.” In three words, she presents a recipe for straightness that will enable you to harness your horse’s engine. Don’t be one who rides a straight line with the haunches cocked to one side. A final quotation from Dr. Van Schaik: When Louis XIII began his riding lessons with Antoine de Puvinel, the first thing he asked was, “What do you expect first of your pupil?” De Puvinel answered, “That he be an elegant rider.” (“Qu’il soit bel homme de cheval.”) The king then asked: “What is the difference between an elegant rider and a good rider (bon homme de cheval)?” To this de Puvinel answered, “I make a great distinction because it would be very embarrassing to be a good rider without being an elegant rider. It is, however, possible to be an elegant rider without being a good rider.” (p. 19)

TDC FALL FESTIVAL TEAM CHALLENGE TO BENEFIT

HEROES ON HORSES

Therapeutic Riding of Tucson, Inc (TROT)

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT “HEROES ON HORSES” Since spring 2006, TROT has collaborated with the Southern Arizona Veterans Administration Hospital to help injured US Veterans in the Tucson area. TROT’s Heroes on Horses program offers both mounted and ground lessons and focuses on physical, emotional, social, and cognitive healing. Mounted lessons help improve core strength, balance, and coordination. Learning to cue the horse and ride patterns requires confidence, decision making, following instructions, and remembering complicated courses. The emotional bond with the horse can be powerful and life-changing and can help participants develop tools to better prepare for the anxieties of everyday life. The atmosphere of Heroes on Horses is fun, positive, and upliftingas place where participants can share their experiences and fears with other veterans and where they can focus on physical rehabilitation and personal growth. One TROT participant described the experience saying, “There is absolutely no way to express or measure how this treatment has helped me deal with PTSD and other mental health issues.” TEAM CHALLENGE RULES 1. Team Coordinator: Sign up your team* by sending an email to Ursula Conway, umconway@gmail.com, with the names of your team members* and your email address. 2. A registration fee of $25 (check made out to ‘TDC’ or cash) will be collected at the show when pledge sheets are turned in by team coordinator. All other funds collected go directly to TROT Heroes on Horses. 3. *Team will be made up of 3 riders: 1 open rider and 2 AA (or 1 open, 1 AA, & 1 Jr). If you wish to participate but don’t have a team, let us know and we’ll try to put riders together to form a team. You may also participate on two teams but will need two different pledge sheets (1 for each team). 4. Download a pledge sheet (1 for each team member) from the TDC web site to record donations and pledges to your team. Get your friends, family, businesses to make a sponsorship or pledge by either of the following methods : a. Sponsor- Make a one-time donation for your team by i. writing a tax-deductible check made out to TROT, Inc.- team member collects check and records amount on his/her pledge sheet… OR ii. Sponsor may use a credit card by calling TROT at 749-2360, Ext ‘0’. Ask for Carolyn and provide the name of the rider who solicited the donation for team credit b. Pledge - a donor pledges a specific amount based on rider’s highest dressage score (rounded up to next whole number) minus 50%. For example, a donor might pledge $2. If rider’s highest score for Saturday is 62.4%, then the person who pledges would pay 63% - 50% = 13 X $2 = $26. You would collect this amount from your donor after the show. Checks should be made out to TROT, Inc. Note to Riders: You will use the best score you receive for any one ride on Saturday. 5. Team Coordinator: Please turn in your registration fee; pledge sheets; and sponsor checks Fri. pm at the competitor dinner. All pledges and sponsorships must be recorded on pledge sheets prior to turning them in so that your team can get the proper credit. Questions? Nancy McGibbon: nhmcgibbon@gmail.com

Special Mounted ‘Awards Ceremony’ at Noon on Sunday. First prize- will be awarded to the team who collects the most money for TROT Second prizes – for the top 4 teams who have the highest average dressage score We hope everyone will participate in this very worthwhile and fun team challenge. Thank you for helping improve the quality of life for our veterans!

*** If your name should be on this list, please contact Heather Bilodeau @ h.bilodeau@azdressage.org! *** *** Dont’t forget you can also donate your hours to your favorite ADA Member! *** We can always use your help at our shows and clinics! If you’re vying for Year End Awards, a 4-hour minimum of volunteer service is required for eligibility. You have LOTs of ways you can be of service to your organization ... even including surrogate service from friends and family! Our full Volunteer Policy can be found on our website at: http://azdressage.org/volunteer/

We'd love your thoughts on the current volunteer system What makes your volunteer efforts worthwhile to you? --recognition, a show T-shirt, a volunteer raffle? Are you looking for alternate ways to help the ADA because your schedule makes volunteering at shows difficult? The ADA is in the midst of another big year, with more volunteers needed than ever, and we want to make that effort rewarding for us all. We would love to get input on what, if any, changes would make volunteering more rewarding for you. Knowing that our membership's time is more precious than ever, please consider taking a moment to send in your comments or questions if you haven't already to let us know how, when, and why you volunteer so that we can devise a suitable volunteer recognition/rewards program. Feel free to email Kathy Smith at ksmith@azdressage.org and give us your opinion! Thanks so much!

Nuggets Does your trainer or clinician or fellow rider have some quotes or pearls of wisdom that he or she states that crystallize a concept for your riding? If so, please email them to centerline@azdressage.org and they will be considered for publication.

“I make a great distinction [between an elegant rider and a good rider] because it would be very embarrassing to be a good rider without being an elegant rider. It is, however, possible to be an elegant rider without being a good rider.
