The Golden Rules of the Dressage Warm Up Arena The warm-up arena at a show can be a happening place, but if you don’t know your way around, it can quickly become a scary one. Savvy riders share the ring with others who may be distracted by the antics of their horses or the directives of their instructors. Some riders may boldly think they own the warm-up arena and act as bullies while others may simply be petrified with show nerves. The more prepared you are by knowing a few common rules, the more smoothly you will be able to warm up your horse and get ready for your test. Fortunately, good warm-up techniques, like any skill, can be learned. Did you know that the U.S. Dressage Federation (USDF) publishes an official protocol for warming up at a show? This should be required reading for all competitors (usdf.org). The following are tips, insights and rules for the warm-up arena at a show from instructors who have taken many students to shows over the years: Bill Woods, Sarah Martin, Jessica Rattner and Tracey Lert give sound advice for every competitor.

Follow the Basic Code of Conduct Riders should pass each other left hand to left hand. This is the first, most elemental rule riders must observe, say the experts. If you are traveling to the right and you see a horse coming toward you, steer your horse off the track so that you will pass with your left hands nearest to each other. This rule is easy to remember if you have your driver’s license since the same rule applies when driving (in the United States, at least). Circles are an exception. If you are circling, stay to the inside of oncoming riders. If you are passing another rider who is circling, you can stay your course on the rail. It’s not necessary to try to thread through her circle in order to pass left hand to left hand.

REGION 5 DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Another great competition year has passed for USDF! It’s been fun to watch everyone post their standings in the USDF Year End Awards program and see your great season. The USDF convention and the Awards Gala is just around the corner and it’s time to book your hotel rooms, airfare and register for the convention and symposium if you haven’t done so already! It’s in St. Louis, a great town with lots of things to do. November 30th – December 3rd. Information and registration forms for the Convention and Symposium are available at www.usdf.org/Convention/. If you’re coming to the awards dinner, let me know and we’ll save room for you at our Region 5 tables! A reminder that your Participating Member Delegates to the USDF Convention for 2016 are Eva-Maria Adolphi, Rusty Cook, Scarlett Fahrenson, Sarah Martin and Susan Leutwyler. Please contact them or myself if you have any concerns regarding items listed on the BOG agenda or anything you would like to have brought forward at the 2 Regional meetings during the convention. The 2016 Great American/USDF Region 5 Championships will be September 14-17, 2017. We are tentatively set to be at the Stanley Park Fairgrounds in Estes Park, but we are looking at a possible change in venue and will know shortly after this letter is published. The Rocky Mountain Dressage Society will be our host and we’re looking forward to another great year. We’re hoping for some new and diverse bids for the 2018 championships. I’d love to hear from any interested parties as soon as possible so I can get you a list of the information we’re going to need for those bids. All Regional Championships still must be held by mid-October since the winners

of the Adult Amateur and Open divisions will continue to feed into the Nationals Championships. The National Championships keep growing and it’s great to see so many folks from the Region 5 Championships planning to attend the Nationals. The Adequan/USDF FEI Level Trainers Conference will be held January 16-17, 2017 in Loxahatchee, Florida and will feature Lilo Fore and Hans-Christian Matthiesen. This will be an event you won’t want to miss. They are both incredible instructors and the demo horses for these events are always fantastic. There are a few criteria to meet in order to attend. For more information on this great events, check out this website: http://www.usdf.org/education/other-programs/trainers-conference/index.asp. There were many educational opportunities in our Region in October with the USDF Adult Clinic in Colorado and the USDF Jr/YR Clinic in Arizona. More great things are being planned by our GMO’s throughout the winter and into next year so please be sure to check them out and support your local groups with your attendance as participants and auditors so these educational opportunities can continue!

Till next month!

Slower gaits take the inside track. As Florida author, judge and instructor Bill Woods succinctly puts it: “If you are walking, whether you’re going to do a Prix St. Georges test or Intro, for heaven’s sake, get off the track!” Look up, he insists. This simple habit is critical to harmony in any warm-up arena. If you are studying your horse’s neck, not only are you not looking where you are going, you are also probably lost in your thoughts. The warm-up arena is for work. If you need to take a break for any reason, exit the warm-up arena. Parking your horse on the rail will cause traffic-flow problems for the rest of the riders trying to get ready for their tests. You will encounter all kinds of good reasons to stop—to strategize with your trainer, to chat with a friend about your last test or to put on your coat and get the last-minute boot buff. Whatever the reason, just take it outside the gate, and make sure you aren’t blocking the entrance or exit either. Control your whip. Just the sound of a whip can disturb other horses. Horses need their personal space. If you are close enough to touch another horse with your whip, you are too close. Keep at least one horse’s length away from other horses in all directions. “Treat every horse like they might kick,” advises Jessica Rattner, rider and head trainer at Devonwood Equestrian Center. “You never know when a horse will decide that close is too close and fire out. It’s just better to be safe than sorry!”

Prepare for the Pre-test Warm-up Be aware of the kind of message your horse might sending and receiving from other horses. For example, a Friesian coming up behind someone in a thundering canter might make another horse think he is running away from something and out of control, which is contagious. A young horse seeing upper-level movements for the first time might interpret them wrongly. A passage is definitely a sign of an excited horse. Half passing toward a horse might seem to be an attack. To get your horse more comfortable with the show experience, make sure you school him with other horses. Sarah Martin, an instructor based in Colorado, prepares her students by holding a mock show warm-up lesson with up to 15 horses. She directs the riders in an orchestrated set of test patterns. “It’s a wonderful tool,” she explains. “In this way, the experienced horses provide an example of how to behave for the younger horses. The riders have an opportunity to learn how to space themselves and control the tempo.” Martin advises her students to watch the warm-up arena for a few moments before entering. She says a rider must learn to read the arena much like a raft guide must learn to read the water. Which way is the current flowing? An observant rider can pick out which horses are high and unpredictable, which riders look like a deer in the headlights and who is quietly doing their work. Some riders may be circling at one end so that they can hear their coaches. Others might be looking down and only dimly aware of their surroundings. Use this information to know where to direct your horse and when to do your movements. When you enter the warm-up ring, Martin suggests staying toward the middle at a walk to give your horse time to adjust to the tension and hum of activity. Since dressage movements can take a horse in any direction, it can be difficult to predict which way another rider is going. In these cases, it’s OK to speak up. “Sometimes a simple ‘heads up’ or ‘on your left’ is enough,” says Rattner. She also suggests, “If you want to take a particular line, declaring your intentions can help other riders plan.” Martin agrees but cautions, “Shouting out your next move does not absolve you from watching out for other riders, and endlessly narrating your intentions just adds to the overall confusion of the warm-up.” “Let’s start with responsibility,” suggests Woods. “If you can steer, you are supposed to be more generous and self-aware than those who cannot. If you are a princess, you get no dispensation. Make your tempis around the helpless novice riders, not through them!” Martin teaches her students to ride defensively, no matter who else is in the warm-up. “I do not differentiate between green and experienced,” she explains. “Advanced horses can also sometimes be claustrophobic or very high. I read the energy level of the horses around me, and I avoid the high energy ones, no matter what their level. DECEMBER 2016 | THE CENTERLINE | 7

Everyone agrees that if you are experienced and/or are riding a well-trained confident horse, you are in the best position to watch out for other riders and set up your movements in the right places. “I think it’s up to advanced riders to keep their antennae up,” says Tracey Lert, a longtime instructor in California.

Using Wireless Headsets In the last few years, wireless communication devices have changed the way riders warm up at a show. The devices function like walkie-talkies complete with headsets, thereby allowing coaches to discreetly instruct their riders without yelling across the arena. “I like them,” says Lert. “It makes the atmosphere calmer and it’s more centering for the rider. She doesn’t have to hug one corner of the ring in order to hear her coach.” Martin appreciates them, too, but is quick to add that the warm-up is not the place for a riding lesson. She often finds that she is coaching several students at once, so she will give her newbie rider the headset while offering an occasional comment to the others as they ride by. “In general, I do very little shouting from the side, although a loud ‘good!’ can help to pump up a timid rider or boost the confidence of a rider who is about to enter the show ring.” Rattner notes that the wireless systems make it more difficult for riders to keep track of everyone. “You don’t have the benefit of hearing an instructor tell her student to do a half pass. And if you are wearing a headset, you may find it harder to hear someone right behind you. Make sure you take note of who is ‘plugged in’ and who is not,” she suggests. The wireless systems do have some disadvantages, Woods points out. “I appreciate the notion of decorum and golf-commentator-like whispered tones, but one downside to headsets is that each student retreats into a self-oriented cocoon with little regard for anyone or anything outside her sphere. Programmed to follow her coach’s orders, the rider titanically plows along, oblivious to whatever icebergs other coaches are unwittingly throwing in her path. One advantage of the old aural system of coaching aloud was that since each trainer could hear what the others were saying, each could steer his students into uncontested zones, free of hazards and hindrances. On the bright side,” he adds wryly, “the prevalence of techie devices spares the rest of us from the guy on the sideline who, instead of actually coaching, insists on shouting arcane bits of dressage philosophy so the rest of us will acknowledge his brilliance. I prefer to be a minimalist. If your student doesn’t understand the heavy stuff by now, trying to flood them with it moments before their test isn’t going to do them any good.” Woods does acknowledge one obscure benefit to the wireless communication systems with this recollection: “I appreciated one kid’s approach to TMI [too much information] which I observed at a wintertime Florida show. An advanced Young Rider was being prepped for her test by not one but by both of her parents—well-known professionals. Each was wearing a headset and standing at an opposite end of the schooling ring. North end: Dad’s advice. South end: Mom’s. I watched as, overwhelmed with their input, the child discreetly took her reins in one hand and slipped the switch on her belt to off. Problem solved!”

Use Warm-Up Time Effectively The warm-up arena is not the place for a last-minute review of your test. Not only is it difficult to navigate a test pattern with a ring full of riders, it is not the best preparation for your horse either. “Trust the training you did at home,” advises Lert. “Use your warm-up time to get your horse through and to test his responsiveness to the aids.” Lert learned the secret of building a horse’s confidence from her father, Peter Lert, instructor, competitor and winner of the USDF Lifetime Achievement award. (Peter Lert passed away in January. See Arena, p. 18.) He began his career as a jumper trainer. “Show-jumping riders use the warm-up to build a horse’s confidence so he believes he can 8 | THE CENTERLINE | DECEMBER 2016

jump anything,” says Lert. “I see a lot of dressage riders make the mistake of creating anxiety in their horses by drilling the stuff that is not working. You don’t want your horse thinking, Oh no, Mother is upset! It’s especially important to finish your warm-up with something your horse does really well, so he will enter the show ring in a good frame of mind.” The warm-up arena can be an electric place, and for an inexperienced horse it can be overwhelming. If you suspect that your horse might act up, Martin suggests riding him out first or warming him up on the longe line. Recognized shows usually provide a designated longeing area. “Of course, no one can stop a young horse from bucking and spooking completely,” she says, “but taking your fractious horse into the warm-up puts other riders on green horses at risk.” When another horse in the warm-up arena just loses it, or if a rider gets thrown from her horse, everyone agrees that you should stand as still as possible and wait until the situation is resolved. Lert tells her students, “Just halt and wait for things to get under control.” She feels that it is safer to stay on and not dismount. Martin encourages her students to dismount so that they can steady their horses. “The safest place is on your two feet,” she says, adding, “Don’t try to be the hero and catch the loose horse. You could cause another situation when your horse and the other one start kicking and squealing.” Speaking of heroics, Woods recalls, “Once I was on an especially obnoxious Thoroughbred, trying to get him ready for his first Training Level test. As he tried a sudden, uncontrolled dash for the exit, another professional on a massive warmblood blocked his path and cheerfully offered, ‘It’s OK. If you have to, run him into me!’” While we can’t recommend this kind of chivalry, the spirit of goodwill toward other competitors is one of the best things you can bring to any warm-up arena. “Remember that everyone at a show is probably stressed,” says Rattner. “Polite riding can keep you and your ringmates from getting further stressed out. Niceness often perpetuates itself.

First, I’d like to say that I appreciate ADA’s monthly newsletter and the time and efforts taken to publish/circulate it. In reading the November issue of the Centerline I noticed the recipe published for Dog Treats. Being someone who is often consulted by my employer to ensure ‘safety’ of published materials regarding products or practices intended for dogs and cats, I wanted to make ADA aware that a disclosure statement may have been wise to have included with this recipe. I’m guessing that you and most members of ADA are not aware that over 75% of food allergies experienced by dogs and cats are linked to beef, dairy, and/or wheat products. Another call-out of concern is that some of the peanut butter products being produced today contain xylitol, which is an ingredient that poses high risk of causing hypoglycemia and/or liver failure to any dog consuming it. At least five companies add xylitol to peanut butters unless they've suspended that practice recently. The brand names are Go Nuts, Hank's Protein Plus Peanut Butter, Krush Nutrition, Nuts 'n More and P28. I also noted the reference for the recipe listed and there was no disclosure or notification on their website; however, I am going to guess that they likely were not aware of the some of the more recent research and clinical cases that shed light on the aforementioned concerns. Lisa Darling, DVM, MBA Ranch of Last Resort Phoenix, AZ 85086 Response from Barn Tip Editor: In the dog treat recipe, I put ‘REGULAR’ in capital letters because I am aware of xylitol being in some brands. These usually say “low sugar” or some other phrase that should be a clue to the buyer to read the label. Xylitol is dangerous to both dogs and horses, so we all need to read the ingredients for everything we buy our pets. The dog treat recipe is only for something to try if your pet is not on a special diet which hopefully you have discovered long before reading the November Centerline. ************************** Good evening! I know this is probably not the right avenue for this, but I wanted to offer some feedback for this weekend’s [state championships] show. I had fun...plain and simple. My rides sucked....like really sucked, but it was fun (and funny). While I’m sure there were comments made during some of my rides that I didn’t hear, all of the ones said to my face were supportive and encouraging! The volunteer base was incredible, cheery, helpful and just made the whole experience better! I am relatively new to the recognized shows; pretty much this was my first year. I know dressage has a bad reputation for being stuffy and stuck up, but I would love for newbies like me to just give it a try. I am riding a random, old Thoroughbred that I got for free and I feel as accepted as anyone. So thank you! Thank you to the judges, who I felt were fair, honest while also being kind. I would so appreciate if you could let them know that a competitor who did not do well felt that way, as I’m sure they tend only to receive grumpy feedback. Thank you to the show management and organizers, I can’t imagine the time that was spent on this or any show. Thank you to the volunteers, they seriously made my day!! I can’t wait for next year!

Kim (and Wayne Carter) **************************

Jay Chabucos, our ADA recognized show manager, has delivered a letter of apology to the Board and to our competitors for the mis-ordering of neck ribbons for State Championships competitors and for the ensuing glitches in the awards ceremonies and photos. In that letter, he has acknowledged that these ceremonies did not meet his normal standard of show management and he takes full responsibility for the problems that ensued from not having championship ribbons available for our winners. The ADA has, in addition, heard from a few competitors regarding their disappointment for a number of things associated with the awards ceremonies, including the lack of individual ribbons, the chaotic feel at the ceremonies and rushed photo shoots, etc. We appreciate all feedback ... and especially feedback delivered in a constructive rather than destructive way ... The ADA always strives to use your feedback to improve our processes and make each show better than the last and your feedback from this show is no exception. Every member’s voice matters! We also can’t help but encourage each of you to pay it forward, as many of our dedicated members already do, by volunteering at our shows, on our committees and on our Board of Directors. We need and appreciate YOU and your feedback! The Board would like to take this opportunity to thank Jay for reaching out with an apology and want him to know that we are all human; we all make mistakes. In addition, we’d like to thank Kim, Jay, Tanya, and all of our volunteers for coordinating efforts to mitigate this unfortunate mishap as much as possible. The 10 | THE CENTERLINE | DECEMBER 2016

Board also thanks our corporate sponsors, SW Equine Hospital, Cool/Aid and Farnam Companies, for their generous prize donations and horse spa setups and to thank those competitors who selflessly donated their personal championship ribbons to allow our winners to enjoy, in the moment, their victory gallops and championships photos wearing a championship ribbon. If you see them at an ADA event or show, please take a moment to thank them all, too! The ADA would like to emphasize that each show is a learning experience for us as well as for our competitors, and the recognized show team which includes paid staff, volunteer staff and your all-volunteer Board are all working together, as we do after every show, to evaluate and improve our processes and make our competitors’ show experience the best it can be. If you have any specific requests or additional feedback you think would be helpful and would like to share regarding any of your show experiences, please reach out to any board member personally or email us at info@azdressage.org.

****PS: Jay has advised us that everyone’s individual championships neck ribbons have been purchased and should be mailed out and delivered to each winner by early the first week of December. Thank you for your patience and understanding and Happy Holidays and, of course, safe riding to all! Sue Leutwyler ADA Board President

Barn Tip: Carrot Oat Applesauce Treats for Dogs & Horses Ingredients · 1/2 cup oats (quick for dogs, quick, steel-cut or old-fashioned are fine for horses) · 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce · 1/2 cup (about 1 large) carrot, finely grated · 1/2 cup flour Instructions 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. and cover a baking tray with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. 2. Mix all four ingredients in a medium bowl. 3. Use a tablespoon to drop clumps of the mixture on to the baking tray. Shape if you wish.* 4. Bake for 18-20 minutes, until treats are set.

*The author of “Baking Mischief” tested batches with both steel-cut and instant/quick oats. The steel-cut oats made a more attractive treat, (you can’t really shape the instant oats). These keep in the fridge for 5-7 days

THE DRESSAGE FOUNDATION'S CAROL LAVELL GIFTED MEMORIAL FUND AWARDS $9,000 TO ADULT AMATEUR RIDERS Congratulations, Sarah Lindsten & Cookie!

The Dressage Foundation is proud to announce this year's recipients of the Carol Lavell Gifted Memorial Fund Scholarships for Adult Amateurs. Each will receive a $1,000 Scholarship to enable them to set aside quality time in concentrated training with their horse, trainer of choice, and away from the daily pressures of job and family. "Thanks to the generosity of Carol Lavell, her family, and friends, we are pleased to provide this financial support to adult amateurs who not only make time to further their dressage education, but who are tremendous volunteers for their dressage clubs," said Jenny Johnson, Executive Director of The Dressage Foundation. “Without the effort of volunteers such as these, dressage would not be alive and well in communities across the country. They certainly deserve to have some time away to concentrate on their riding!” Up to eleven $1,000 grants are available each year - one per United States Dressage Federation Region and two wild card grants that can be awarded in any Region. The following Adult Amateurs were chosen as recipients from their respective USDF Regions to receive grants for training in the 2017 calendar year. USDF Region 1 – Sharon Hess (PA) and her Oldenburg, Kalander Boy, will train with Andrea Velas. Sharon is a member of Western Pennsylvania Dressage Association. USDF Region 2 – Kate Snyder (KY) and her Off-Track Thoroughbred, Safely Spun, will train with Laura Burket. Kate is a member of Kentucky Dressage Association. USDF Region 3 – Patricia Estes (FL) and her Appaloosa, Herman, will train with Greta Wrigley. Patricia is a member of Arredondo Dressage Society. USDF Region 3 – Cheryl Tobey (GA) and her Arabian, Chloe, will train with Greta Wrigley. Cheryl is a member of Coastal Empire Dressage Association. USDF Region 5 – Sarah Lindsten (AZ) and her KWPN, Cookie, will train with Bobbie Lynn McKee. Sarah is a member of Arizona Dressage Association. USDF Region 7 – Viva Medina (HI) and her KWPN, Temelrite, will train with Lehua Custer. Viva is a member of Hawaii State Dressage Society. USDF Region 8 – Karen Norton (CT) and her Oldenburg, Red Baron, will train with Renee Suprenant. Karen is a member of Connecticut Dressage and Combined Training Association. 18 | THE CENTERLINE | DECEMBER 2016

USDF Region 8 – Linda Lambert (CT) and her Hanoverian, Wunderlich, will train with Nancy Lavoie. Linda is a member of Connecticut Dressage and Combined Training Association. USDF Region 9 – Arlene Gaitan (TX) and her Swedish Warmblood/Arabian, Questt, will train with Judy Campbell Urban. Arlene is a member of Alamo Dressage Association. For more information about The Dressage Foundation and the Gifted Memorial Fund, visit www.dressagefoundation. org or contact Jenny Johnson at (402) 434-8585 or jenny@dressagefoundation.org.

The Dressage Foundation is a 501(c)(3), non-profit, tax-exempt, donor-driven organization that is dedicated to supporting and advancing the sport of dressage. The organization solicits contributions, appropriately allocates the donations, and awards grants and scholarships to dressage riders of all ages and levels. For more information, please visit www.dressagefoundation.org.

Nuggets Does your trainer or clinician or fellow rider have some quotes or pearls of wisdom that he or she states that crystallize a concept for your riding? If so, please email them to centerline@azdressage.org and they will be considered for publication.
