By Susan Downs Parrish, Ph.D.

On October 9, 2016, I entered my first dressage trail class. I felt obliged. Bobbi Lehman of the Amado Equine Hacienda went to all the trouble of designing two trail classes. The least I could do was enter one. Yes, I go to great lengths to avoid guilt feelings. Dressage Trail 2 appealed to me because one of the movements included weaving among a set of poles at trot or canter. If done at canter, lead changes were required. It sounded like fun—a challenge for my Intermediare 1 girl. Reminding myself that we could back out on the day of the schooling show, I set up obstacles in my dressage ring. If you’re thinking about riding in a dressage trail class, but worried about remembering the sequence of moves, let me assure you that a faulty memory won’t be a problem. The obstacles serve as prompts—cues strewn along the way between the first movement and the last. But if you don’t mention this to your non-horsey friends, they will be so impressed that you managed to get through the sixteen movements of the test without getting lost. The obstacles placed at different points in my ring consisted of poles, garbage cans, cavaletti ends, and a rubber mat. With a little imagination, the conglomeration of stuff scattered around my ring looked like what we would encounter in Amado. As my favorite engineer likes to say, “Close enough for government work.” Maronda willingly walked over the rubber mat at home, but would she be so willing when faced with the wooden bridge at the show? I had my doubts, but Bobbi assured me that before the class, we would be able to practice going over the bridge. When confronted with the actual bridge, I expected Maronda would say, “Seriously?” Before describing how our ride in the trail class went, let me mention a few thoughts about judges. Some years ago, at an event sponsored by the Tucson Dressage Club, a judge talked about what he/ she looked for in tests fourth level and below. Heather Irbinskas rode a horse with gaits that approached perfection. The horse’s name escapes me. The person giving the clinic was also impressed and said, “I would give this trot a nine.” I raised my hand to ask why not a ten?” The judge said, “I don’t give tens. Only God gets a ten.” My left eyebrow (the one with an alpha mare’s personality) arched, but I remained silent. A few months later, I happened to be at a Gerd Zuther clinic at Central Arizona Riding Academy, and found myself standing alone in the aisle of one of the barns with Gerd Zuther. I said, “Judge X said

REGION 5 DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE I know a lot of us in Colorado would sure appreciate some moisture soon (at least at this point in mid-February!), and it would be nice if the wind would settle some, but at least the weather is warm and we are getting lots of riding in! Fundraising efforts are once under way for the USDF Region 5 Juniors and Young Riders as they try to qualify and travel to the 2017 FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships. The Championships will be held July 18-23, 2017 at HitsOn-The-Hudson in Saugerties, New York. It is going to require a tremendous amount of funding to send our teams as most likely we will have to fly the horses in order to avoid 3 days of driving on either side of the competition. If we drive them, this will very much mean we will have to arrive to the competition quite early in order to give them enough rest before they show. We hope we will be able to send a 8 riders with their horses, grooms and Chef d’Equipes. In addition to the transportation to the show, there are the expenses of hotel, team uniforms, chef expenses, feed, bedding and oh so much more that they need help with. If you would like to contribute or help with their fundraising efforts, please contact Joan Clay, our Region 5 Jr/YR FEI coordinator at jnclay@comcast. net or 970-420-0877 or our Fundraising Chair, Kathy Gillespie at kjpagillespie@msn.com or 303921-5253. If you are still interested in participating in the FEI Junior and Young Rider program for 2017, the last intention deadline is May 16th but the less expensive deadline is May 2nd, so be sure to get in your intentions soon. Regional Championship bids for 2018 have been received and we should know soon where the competition will be held. USDF will announce the locations of the 2018 Regionals in May. I hope everyone is planning on attending the Regionals in 2017 in Parker, Colorado at the Colorado Horse Park. It’s a beautiful venue with lots of fun things to do. Many improvements have been made in the last couple of years. It should be a great show hosted by the Rocky Mountain Dressage Society! If you are interested in being a delegate to the Board of Governors meeting, please contact our Nominating Council representative and have your name added to MARCH 2017 | THE CENTERLINE | 3

Chaos (cont.)

he/she never gives a score of ten. What’s your thought about that?” Again, my left eyebrow lifted. An uncontrollable bit of fluff. Gerd paused, then said, “I remember a mare at an inspection. She could fly over a fence. I watched her jump and gave her a nine, even though she was really good on that day. A nine seemed right because in my mind, she would come back next year and jump even better and deserve a ten.” God wasn’t mentioned and my eyebrow didn’t budge. Back to the Dressage Trail Class 2. Bobbi, ever the statesman, scheduled my I-1 ride before my trail class ride. The score for the I-1 ride was sixty-three percent. I always aim for seventy percent, but so far have always fallen short. This was one of my better scores, so I was pleased, not ecstatic, but pleased. When warming up for the first class, we practiced going over the bridge. Maronda went halfway over the bridge before stepping off. On the second try, she stayed on the bridge the whole way. She trusted me enough to walk on something she had never seen. What a girl! Our turn for the Trail Class 2 came a little early because someone before us scratched. Going early means less time to sweat—okay, let it happen, we’re ready. Turns out, we were more than ready. We got three scores of nine, and one ten. The ten was for navigating the bridge. For Collective Marks, we got three nines and one ten. The ten was for “Harmony between horse and rider, horse’s ability to negotiate obstacles with little or no resistance.” The score for the ride was eight-five percent! Back to the topic of judges. On October 9, 2016, Michell Combs had the courage to award a score of ten when it was warranted. She could’ve hedged and given a score of nine point five, but she didn’t. Maronda walked up to the bridge, stretched her lowered neck, walked onto the bridge, traveled straight and walked off, as if she had read the description in the test. To use Gerd Zuther’s criterion, how could we come back next week or next year and march over that bridge any better? In case you’re thinking I felt ho-hum about my scores, think again! I was and am thrilled. What a boost to my confidence. But don’t worry—my trail class success won’t upend my perspective. If I earn one eight in an I-1 ride, I’m darned fortunate and know it. What this test on this day proved is that some judges know a ten when they see it and are brave enough to award it. According to Friedrich Nietzsche, “one must have chaos within to give birth to a dancing Star.” Maybe Michell and I shared a moment of “chaos.” Susan Parrish, PhD, on Maronda

LOCAL EQUESTRIAN TO JOIN ELITE CLUB HONORING SENIOR RIDERS AND HORSES ... Congratulations to Peter Kalman of Chandler and his horse Bennigan! February 21, 2017 – Peter Kalman of Chandler, AZ will be inducted into special group of senior dressage riders and horses on April 15th at the Arizona Dressage Association’s Spring Celebration Show. The ages of Peter and his horse, With Honors and Bennigan, qualify them to become members of The Dressage Foundation's Century Club. Peter will be riding both horses to join! The Century Club recognizes dressage riders and horses whose combined ages total 100 years or more. Peter is 79-years-old, Bennigan is 23, With Honors is 25. In addition to having ages totaling 100 or more, horse and rider perform a dressage test of any level at a dressage show and are scored by a dressage judge. The Dressage Foundation provides a Century Club ribbon and wall plaque to each horse and rider team. Local dressage clubs, family and friends help to make the ride into a celebratory event. The Century Club was formed at The Dressage Foundation in 1996, at the suggestion of noted dressage judge and instructor, Dr. Max Gahwyler. The intent was to encourage older dressage riders to remain active in the sport. Since that time, the Century Club has grown into a meaningful and popular endeavor and has over 275 members to-date. Dressage is a word drawn from the French verb for "to train." Dressage is both a method of training horses and a competitive sport, and is designed to develop correct movement in the horse. TDF's Century Club is sponsored by Platinum Performance. "At Platinum Performance horse health is our mission. Since 1996, we’ve been committed to providing high quality equine nutritional supplements that are developed, tested, and made with care to ensure results. Visit www.platinumperformance.com/equine for more information." Barn Tip: The Perfect Boot Pull ... and so easy to make! Do you ever have trouble getting your boots zipped? Too many holiday treats? Hot Arizona summers? Hours of driving? Some sort of surgery or rehab? It is hard to grab that little zipper tab to pull it to the very top of the boot, but if you use an “S hook (these came free with a new dog tag) and attach it to something you can grab (this is an old cat collar), it will make pulling up the zippers a breeze. Just hook one end of the S hook through the hole in the zipper pull, give a good tug, and the boot is on or the bag is zipped!

Keep one on your boot bag so you have your helper at every horse show.

USDF Youth Outreach Clinics The Youth Outreach Clinics program is a new educational opportunity for our "grass roots" youth riders, and is held in conjunction with the USDF Jr/YR Clinic Series. There will be three Youth Outreach Clinics offered in 2017. The goal of this program is to introduce those USDF youth members who are dedicated dressage riders, but who have not yet entered the realm of FEI level competition or currently do not have an FEI level horse, to the USDF "youth pipeline" and the opportunities it offers. Each of these clinics will be held over two days, and will include a variety of instruction. On the first day, the participants in the Youth Outreach Clinic will observe the Jr/YR Clinic riding sessions, sitting together as a group as their clinician leads the discussion for each session. They will also join the riders of the Jr/YR Clinic during Saturday lunch and on Saturday evening, where they can participate in the lecture and interactive discussion with the clinician of the Jr/YR Clinic. On the second day, each Youth Outreach Clinic participant will ride in a 45-minute session with their clinician. Interested riders must submit an online application; 8-10 riders will be selected to participate. Riders must be 10-21 years of age, and must be able to complete a Training Level test. Auditors of all ages are welcome to pre-register for the USDF Jr/YR Clinic. For Auditor, Rider and Instructor Information, visit here: https://preview.usdf.org/education/clinics/youth/index.asp

Rope’s Ricochet “RICO”

By Eleanor Stine-Masek

June 6, 2002-February 13, 2017

Rico was the grandson of my first Grand Prix horse, Cameo. His bloodline has been in my barn for forty years. I bred Cameo to a local Sport Horse thoroughbred, Rope of Sand, and they produced a beautiful dun filly, Sandahl, who was Rico’s mother. I bred her to a stud at Rice Quarter Horses, Joses Rickashay. Rico was born on the Empirita Ranch in Benson, Arizona and he spent his first eight years living like a ranch horse in a six hundred acre barbwire rock pile pasture. He lived with the other ranch geldings. They taught him how to get around in the rocks and how to deal with Ocotillo branches stuck in his tail and chasing him down the hill. George put the first rides on him in the round pen. I had done tons of ground work and he was very good with the Parelli Seven Games. Josh Coleman did another ninety days with him in Tucson. He would sit on him and teach lessons. One day he told me that Rico had a lot of “Go”, so he let him gallop. He was REALLY FAST! Even though Rico had lots of “Go”, he had a great brain and always listened to his rider. When I started riding Rico on the ranch we helped George gather and sort cattle , as well as teaching him the basics of dressage. Rico was five when I got to ride him in one of Ray Hunt’s last clinics in Sonoita. It was Horsemanship in the morning and cattle work in the afternoon. The morning session had thirty horses in the main arena. Ray split us into two groups and we had to weave in and out of the other horses at walk, trot, and canter. There were a lot of colts and many incompetent riders in that group. I was scared for my life, not because this was all new to Rico, but because not many horses were “on the aids.” We survived and I remember leaving and thinking that Rico was definitely “Broke” for any dressage show warm up! Rico participated in many TDC activities as a demo horse throughout his training. In the Jayne Ayers Test Symposium he did a Training Level test. When Hilda Gurney gave the new test clinic at the Fairgrounds he was a Second Level demo horse. He was a Fourth Level/Prix St. George demo for the Charles De Knuffy/ Gerd Heishman symposium. I started riding Rico regularly in clinics with Carla Symader from Germany when Nancy Levernz brought her to Arizona. Carla supervised our training program from the beginning. She could make me bring out all the best in Rico with a very clear and systematic approach to help him overcome his physical limitations. During my last clinic in January I was struggling with riding the Grand Prix half passes. She helped me get out of his way so that he could do them beautifully. The last day of the clinic I rode him through the trot work from the GP test. It wasn’t perfect, but we were definitely doing it right! My good friend and student, Laura De Cesari, showed Rico at PSG and Intermediare I during the past two years. She rode him beautifully and earned respectable scores at those levels. He gave her valuable experience at the FEI levels and I was so proud that he could connect with her as well. His only hang up was his claustrophobia in box stalls. The only way I was able to take him to the horse shows was with my working student and groom, Joey Crepea. She was always there to baby sit him. Joey would sit outside his stall all day long and pet on him, scratch his chin or take him for a walk. Finally, at this past November show, he was content throughout the show. I loved riding this horse every day. He was sensitive, eager, smart and personable. He had a sweet face and a loving eye. Our partnership was the culmination of forty years of experience learning dressage and good horsemanship. I am grateful for every day I had with him. I am heartbroken that we will not grow old together.

“Our hoofbeats were many, but our hearts beat as one.”

WHAT IS TDF’S TWO-TEMPI CHALLENGE PRESENTED BY THE HORSE OF COURSE Riders who have horses capable of doing two-tempi changes are invited to participate in a Regional and National competition to raise funds for The Dressage Foundation (TDF). Each rider works with an individual, GMO, stable, or any group of dressage friends that is willing to make a pledge to TDF for each two-tempi change.

THE WINNERS At the end of each calendar year, TDF and The Horse of Course will announce National and Regional Two-Tempi Challenge Champions and Reserve Champions, based on the number of completed consecutive two-tempis performed. TDF and The Horse of Course will also present awards for the top two donor groups.

Donations will be earmarked to TDF’s general fund to support programs, grants, and scholarships.

The leader board will be updated quarterly at:

A Two-Tempi Challenge can be held at a show, during a clinic, or even at your local barn with your friends. It is a fun way to bring your equestrian friends together to support the dressage community.

Two-Tempi Challenge

Getting Started RIDERS

SUBMITTING YOUR VIDEO

The horse and rider teams may use the best of three efforts. Start the count with “one” on the first flying change and count to the last two-tempi. If a change is not clean, it still counts as a two-tempi. As soon as the horse loses count (by doing a one-tempi, a three-tempi, or no change), the effort is over. A horse and rider combination can participate monthly in the Two-Tempi Challenge.

Your Two-Tempi Challenge must be videoed and sent via YouTube, email, or DVD to TDF (using a cell phone to video is acceptable). A link or file can be emailed to info@dressagefoundation.org, uploaded on our website, or mailed to TDF’s office (information below). You will receive confirmation that TDF has received the video and pledged donations.

SUPPORTERS Any individual or group may pledge to support the horse and rider team. The group or individual may pledge any dollar amount per change that the rider successfully completes (see above).

ABOUT THE DRESSAGE FOUNDATION The Dressage Foundation is a 501(c)(3), non-profit, tax-exempt, donor-driven organization that is dedicated to educating, supporting, and advancing the sport of dressage in the U.S. The organization solicits contributions, appropriately allocates the donations, and awards grants and scholarships to dressage riders, judges, instructors, breeders, high performance teams, and non-profit equestrian organizations. For more information, please visit dressagefoundation.org. Your Two-Tempi Challenge pledge or video may be returned to: The Dressage Foundation 1314 ‘O’ Street, Suite 305 Lincoln, NE 68508
