A Lesson In Throughness by Katie Scotford

Katie Scotford on her own Dean Martin at the 2016 NAJYRC

When I received the ADA’s Pantano Award three years ago, it never crossed my mind that it would take so long before I was able to put it to use, due to some recurrent setbacks with my horse, Dean Martin. When the opportunity arose to ride in a private clinic with Olympian Guenter Seidel in late July of this year, I jumped at the chance. With Dean going at his best in years, and the goal of achieving my silver medal in the fall, it was an ideal situation. In this article, I share the advice I I received and the exercises I learned from Guenther. Continued on page 8

GOOD JOB EVERYONE! Many thanks to our Region 5 FEI Junior/Young Rider coordinator, Joan Clay, who also was Chef d’Equipe for our teams. We could not have done it without you. Joan not only led our two riders, she volunteers to get gate keepers for the entire show and scribed as well! She wore many hats very well. The USDF convention is coming up quickly and it’s time to book your hotel rooms, airfare and register for the convention and symposium. We are in Lexington, Kentucky this year November 29th December 2nd. Information and registration forms for the Convention and Symposium are available at www.usdf.org/Convention/. All Group Member Organization’s (GMO) were asked to designate their delegates for the USDF convention Board of Governors meeting by August 31st and if not determined by that date, the GMO president would become the delegate. If the GMO delegate/president is not able to attend the convention, a proxy for that delegate can be submitted at any time up until the night before the BOG meeting at the convention. The advantage for the GMO is that the delegate will be known and can receive communication from the USDF office earlier. GMO Delegates are included on a list of USDF delegates to receive e-mail communications containing pertinent information on issues that will come before the 2017 BOG meeting at convention. If GMO’s have not yet sent in their delegate information, please do so as soon as possible. If you are going to Kentucky for the Convention or the Awards Dinner, make sure you set aside some cont. on pg. 13 SEPTEMBER 2017 | THE CENTERLINE | 3

ADA’s President Letter Hello, As your new Arizona Dressage Association (ADA) president, I would like to introduce myself, and to share with you some of the board's current projects. I am Tania Radda and previously served as the Fundraising Chair for ADA (a position I still hold). I became interested in dressage as a teenager, but the sport was not readily available in Brazil, where I grew up. I started riding and competing in dressage in 2011 and I have been involved with the ADA ever since. I always volunteered my time and I became more involved with the board in February of 2016. I very much enjoy being a part of this wonderful community of horse enthusiasts and I am happy to have the opportunity to continue to be involved with our Association. I am a full time Wood artist and when I am not riding, I am in my studio producing work for galleries and collectors. Many of you may know that Sue Leutwyler, our wonderful past president, has moved to California. She is a hard act to follow. Sue did such a wonderful job that it has made my work much easier. We are all very thankful for the many years Sue devoted to ADA and all that she did for our organization. The ADA board is currently working on projects that will benefit ADA and our members. We want you all to know that we are here for you, and that we are very open to ideas and suggestions. We want members to become more involved with ADA projects and board activities. We want to encourage members to take advantage of our Facebook page and our website to keep up to date on ADA projects, board activities and show information. We want to learn more about you, your horses, your opinions and interests. Please post and share! Members are the most important part of ADA and we hope you will become more engaged and active. Post on social media, come to board meetings, volunteer for projects and helping at shows! We need you! We want your help. Moving forward, we want to know what you - our members - expect and want from ADA. With this in mind, we have put together a survey that we will send out soon. Your response to the survey is of great importance! Your feedback will be sent directly to the board. Many of the decisions the board will be making in the next few months will be based on your responses and comments to this survey. I cannot emphasize enough its importance. Please take a few minutes to complete the ADA survey. It is quick and easy, and it will be a BIG HELP in setting our future direction and policies. The board has been working diligently to make changes that respond to member input and address the demands of our organization. Following is a summary of ongoing Committee activities. If any of these interests you, we welcome your contributions. Just contact the committee chairs listed at the end of this letter and please get involved. Recognized Show Committee. We are planning and drawing contracts for our 2017-2018 season. As you all know, we put on five shows a year in the Phoenix area. They are our Fall Fiesta, Fun in February, Spring Celebration, Mountain Air Dressage, and Dressage in the Pines. We will be hosting the Regionals once again here in AZ in 2018. We are looking forward to it and can use your help as a volunteer, exhibitor and/ or sponsor. And, we are putting together a subcommittee to work with WestWorld to gain greater flexibility in a number of areas: food and food vendors, allowing fun activities at the shows such as progressive parties (with food and beverages), dog races, exhibitions and barn parties, improvement of footing and the overall 4 | THE CENTERLINE | SEPTEMBER 2017

show experience. Your comments and ideas will be appreciated. Schooling Show Committee. There are five schooling shows lined up for ADA's 2017-2018 season and we hope many of you will participate. Entry forms are already available on our website at https://azdressage.org/ schooling-shows/ . The Schooling Shows offer Year End Awards. On October 8th, we are holding our annual Members Only Schooling Show at WestWorld. This is a great opportunity to introduce your horse to the WestWorld environment and warm up for our season of recognized shows. Education Committee. The committee is finalizing details for the Janet Foy clinic at WestWorld. We will have covered premium seating at Ring 5-A. There is still time to sign up to audit! Janet Foy will be sharing her experience from many years as a USEF "S" dressage judge and as the author of Dressage for the Not-So-Perfect Horse to help us set long-term goals and improve our dressage skills. Awards Committee. The committee is working on improvements to the rules for Year-End Awards to simplify the tabulation process and make it more uniform. We will also address the need to allow our upper level members to compete more than once at our state championships. ADA has been lucky as we have many of our members volunteer their time, and cash sponsorship for our rings and classes-which we greatly appreciate! And this year we had a few generous donors contribute large cash and trophy awards to make our members show experience more special. The Miller family donated the cash awards for our High Point winners in the Spring Celebration Show, Deborah O'Keefe donated several beautiful silver trophies that we will be sharing with all of you in the next shows, and Alyssa Barngrover has given us tremendous support through Farnam Horse Supplies and provided our shows with several very useful items that were given as awards to our competitors. We are very thankful to all of our donors! We are also working on making sure our donors and sponsors receive our thanks, so please make sure to sign a thank you card (that we will provide you) when you pick up your blue ribbon at our shows. We want your efforts recognized. Sport Horse Committee. We now have a sport horse committee. If you are interested in participating, please reach out to Melanie Ingram and she will help you. The goal is to help promote breeding goals for sport horses, to educate breeders, buyers and trainers, and to provide competition guidelines as well as keep records for all horses. Volunteers Committee. As many of you know, there is a yearly requirement of donating four volunteer hours in order to be eligible for Year-End Awards. We would love to see all of you volunteering and supporting ADA. We are working on ideas for some fun social activities. We will need help organizing these fun events and finding spaces in which to hold them. This will be a great opportunity to get involved and earn some of the hours to help you meet the Year-End requirements. Membership Committee. ADA depends on its members. By joining ADA, you support dressage in Arizona, shows, clinics, educational activities and more. The committee works year-round to support and increase our membership numbers. Fundraising Committee. Well, I am still the chair, and now that I am president, we need to find a new chair. If you would like to take on a new and very important role in ADA, please let us know. We are not a large organization and costs involved in putting on shows, especially those at WestWorld, have increased dramatically over the past few years. In order to provide our members with the shows and benefits they expect, we need to raise funds through sponsorship, underwriting, donations of cash, goods, and in-kind services. This committee is extremely important. We will be grateful if someone would step up to fill this position and help us with our fundraising efforts. Rules Committee. The committee is updating ADA's rules and bylaws, based on the board's periodic review and member input. As you can see there is quite a bit going on and we want all of you to know what our group of volunteers (the ADA Board) have been accomplishing. A Lesson In Throughness

(continued from pg. 1)

Katie Scotford, her horse Dean Martin, and Guenther Seidel

- To improve your horse’s throughness and responsiveness to the aids, transition between walk and trot, staying in shoulder-in all the while. - A simple exercise we should all practice more is the walk-to-canter and canter-to-walk transitions to increase sitting capability and elasticity. - If your horse doesn't jump through for the flying change but instead twists his haunches and/ or pops his croup up, try this exercise: On a 20m circle, pick up counter-canter and push into your outside rein and make your horse hollow on the inside. Give the slightest aid for the change; and with repetition, the changes will become straighter through the body. When you feel your horse is straight, flow out of the circle onto a short diagonal and ask for the change in the same way. - Walking in a box shape (H —> M —> R —> S —> H), make a quarter turn or quarter walk pirouette at each “corner” or letter. To increase the difficulty after each quarter turn, pick up the canter, but walk before the next turn. Finally, try cantering the whole box shape to develop your pirouette work. This will give you a feel for your pirouettes and get your horse using his hind end. - The most common phrases from Guenter were “frame him on the outside rein” and “rounder”… along with the occasional “get your butt in the saddle” when I needed to work harder. Framing the horse on the outside rein was another way of saying inside leg to outside rein; and by demanding the horse to be rounder, he wanted a true connection over the back. The roundness is to come primarily from the outside aids with the bend coming mostly from the inside leg, as well as a slight flexion with the inside rein. When Guenter wanted a horse rounder, it generally didn't mean to put him deep and behind the contact; but rather swinging over the back and supple in the neck. Instead of a false contact which allows the horsey to come off the bit, rounder simply means getting your horse more through. Keeping the poll up yet still having a true connection is the key. 8 | THE CENTERLINE | SEPTEMBER 2017

- Don’t worry about the quantity or correct count for the tempi changes; instead, work on perfecting the canter for the changes (i.e. the jump, push, and straightness). Maintaining the collection in between and having a quality, packaged canter will make the changes easy. - Here is a good exercise for training the pirouettes: half-pass right from quarter line to the centerline, then leg-yield left back to the original quarter line. From there, go into a right half-pirouette. You can go back and forth across the length of the arena doing this exercise. This will increase your horse’s suppleness behind and keep him from anticipating the pirouette. - If a horse is “hot” to the changes, keep your legs on and push more forward. Applying the timeless phrase “hot horses legs on, lazy horses legs off,” never take the legs off. Using your horse’s excess energy, ask for an extended canter in between the changes to keep the energy flowing through. - Half-passes always lead with the shoulders. If they lead with haunches, the horse has come off the outside rein and is no longer stepping through and staying underneath himself. I hope these exercises are relatable and can help you achieve success in the future! I am so thankful to the ADA for providing these awards for its members to further their education. I would also like to thank Kim Yacobucci, my ever-patient trainer; Robin Biehl of Wave Wellness for her use of the Magna Wave on Dean; and Dr. Cindi LaCroix for being the best vet and supporter a person could ask for. Dean and I couldn't have participated in the clinic with Guenter Seidel without all of you! Happy riding!

USEF Horse Welfare & Safety Penalty Guidelines Effective September 1, 2017 Today, the US Equestrian Federation released the following official horse welfare and safety penalty guidelines. This is in follow up to the announcement at the USEF Mid-Year Board Meeting last month. They can also be viewed online at US Equestrian Introduction A common thread that binds all of the Federation’s breeds and disciplines is a dedication and commitment to the health, welfare, and safety of the horse. US Equestrian is committed to ensuring the welfare of our horses and providing a safe and fair competition environment to all of our members and their equine partners. To do this, US Equestrian has created rules to govern the actions of our members and protect both horses and humans, allowing them to experience the joy of horse sports. In the event that a member violates any of the Rules covering welfare and safety of a horse, and this violation ends in a hearing before the Federation’s Hearing Committee, any subsequent penalty issued should be appropriately severe, as a case of a welfare or safety violation against a horse is one of the most egregious violations under the Federation’s Rules. Previously imposed penalties in cases of welfare and safety violations are no longer sufficient in today’s cases. It is important that the Federation’s penalties reflect the severity of the violation. Penalty Guidelines for horse welfare and safety cases (“Guidelines”) have been prepared to assist the Hearing Committee with the types and ranges of penalties to impose in such cases. These Guidelines also assist the Hearing Committee Panels in the imposition of consistent and efficient penalties. A review and evaluation of penalties imposed in these types of cases was performed. While the suspensions and fines imposed may have been appropriate at the time that they were imposed, the suspensions and fines are too light to be useful as guidelines for matters brought to the Hearing Committee today. Penalty Range is a Guideline Only The penalty types and ranges below are simple guidelines and are not mandatory. These Guidelines are intended to provide a basis upon which discretion can be exercised consistently in like circumstances but are not binding on the Hearing Committee Panels. Depending on the facts and circumstances of each case, a Hearing Committee Panel may determine that no purpose is served by imposing a penalty within the range provided in these Guidelines. In some cases, a penalty below the stated range, or no penalty at all, may be warranted. Conversely, a Hearing Committee Panel may determine that the facts and circumstances of a specific case may call for the imposition of penalties above or otherwise outside of a stated range. Examples include, but not are limited to, prior rule violations, egregious misconduct, the need for increased deterrence, or certain policy considerations. Hearing Panel Discretion Federation Hearing Panels must always exercise judgment and discretion and consider appropriate aggravating and mitigating factors in determining appropriate penalties in every case. In addition, whether the penalties are within or outside of the range stated in the Guidelines, Hearing Panels must identify the basis for the penalties imposed. Categories of Rule Violations I. Excessive Use of Whip or Spurs and Improper Use of Bits • Excessive or intentional use of whip or spurs or improper use of a bit to cause harm or pain to a horse/pony. 10 | THE CENTERLINE | SEPTEMBER 2017

For Immediate Release MEDIA CONTACT: JENNIFER M. KEELER, YELLOW HORSE MARKETING, jennifer@yellowhorsemarketing.com June 20, 2017 New Travel Grant Program and Increase in Prize Money Announced for 2017 US Dressage Finals Presented By Adequan® - Prize List Now Available! Source: Yellow Horse Marketing for the US Dressage Finals “I dream, quite literally, of going back to the Finals again, and to this day I compete with that mindset.” For Jennifer “Joey” Evans of San Francisco, Calif., last fall’s journey across the country to compete in the US Dressage Finals presented by Adequan® with her Dutch Warmblood gelding Bombay Sapphire in the First Level Adult Amateur Championship division was the trip of a lifetime. Now the United States Dressage Federation (USDF) announces a new travel grant program for qualified competitors representing certain states in the Western United States, which may help riders like Evans realize their dream of competing in Kentucky again in the future. To alleviate some of the financial burden for those traveling the greatest distance to the 2017 Finals, the USDF is making up to $50,000 in travel grant funds available to eligible competitors who apply and fall into one of two groups based on the rider’s address of record as associated with their USDF membership. Competitors from Group 1 (which includes Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii, Alaska, Montana, Idaho, Arizona, Nevada and Utah) are eligible to apply for grants of up to $1,200 per horse/rider combination, while competitors from Group 2 (Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado) are eligible to apply for grants of up to $900. “I think this is great news for West Coast riders – my trainer and I are always telling fellow riders what an incredible experience the Finals was last year,” said Evans. “I would love to go back every time if I were to qualify again, but the reality is that it was such an expensive trip out that I cannot justify the cost year after year. We have some very talented riders out here who would love to go to Kentucky, but I know first-hand that the logistics and expense of making the trip can be discouraging.

SEPTEMBER 2017 | THE CENTERLINE | 21

“Conversely, possibly the top reason we found the Finals to be such an extraordinary experience was because we were at the Kentucky Horse Park,” Evans continued. “We were showing in the ‘big leagues’ at one of the nation's most famous and historical horse parks. So with the Finals continuing to be held in Kentucky for the time being, I am thrilled to hear there will now be funds available to riders in my area and neighboring regions. I think it may help make the dream a little more accessible for more competitors.” This new travel grant program announcement comes on the heels of an increase in USDF’s overall support of the US Dressage Finals, which will be held November 9-12, 2017 in Lexington: prize money for the main event will see an exciting increase to $75,000 this year, as well as a total of over $180,000 in prize money now being offered for the 2017 Great American Insurance Group/USDF Regional Championships, which serve as qualifying competitions for the Finals. “The USDF is proud of what has been created with the US Dressage Finals and is committed to keeping it one of the premier dressage competitions in the U.S.,” said USDF President George Williams. “Making it easier for those competitors who have to travel great distances to attend has been one of the goals from the start for this showcase event, so we're excited to be able to make travel grants a reality for this year as well as continue to offer generous prize money incentives for both the Finals and the Regional Championships.” Excitement for this year’s event is now officially underway as USDF has also released the official prize list for the 2017 US Dressage Finals presented by Adequan®. To learn more about the Finals, download the 2017 prize list, and sign up to receive news and updates, visit the official event website at www.usdressagefinals.com.

A big congratulations to Missy Gilliland for earning her USDF Gold Medal on Sandra Luebbe’s Samaritano IX at the Flagstaff shows! Way to go!!!

Meet Our Members In this new column, we profile our ADA members. This month, we’d like to introduce you to Dave DeVoe. If you know an ADA member who you think should be profiled in this column, please e-mail centerline@azdressage.org.

Dave Devoe and Lucien ADA: Where were you born and raised? DD: I was born near Chicago, Illinois. My family moved to Montreal, Canada, when I was five years old. I lived in Canada until I graduated university in 1985. I have been in the southwest U. S. ever since. ADA: How long have you lived in Arizona, and how long have you been an ADA member? DD: I have lived in Arizona since 1996 and have been an ADA member for four years. ADA: Tell us a little about your horse(s). DD: My horse is an 8-year-old Clydesdale/Quarter horse gelding that I have had been riding for three years. He was young and green when we got him, and he has proved to be a wonderful partner for me. ADA: What is your profession? DD: I am a pilot for American Airlines. I am fortunate to have a schedule that allows me time to spend time with my family . . . and, of course, the horses. ADA: Tell us an interesting fact about you (for example, a unique skill or talent you possess; an historical or unusual event you witnessed; or a unique experience you’ve had). DD: I was raised on a working family farm near Montreal, Canada. It was there that my life-long love of horses began. Through the Canadian Pony Club I competed in eventing through my teenage years. And now, fast forward thirty some years, my wife and I have raised four kids and live on a small farm in Northern Arizona with our 6 horses and array of other pets. ADA: Name at least one goal you have for the future, horse-related or otherwise. DD: My goal is to continue progressing as a rider and as a horseman . . . and to help my horse be the best he can be. I love that dressage provides the structure to do this. There is always the next level and the next show to give us some-

thing to aim at.

Barn Tip:

Help your barn become recycling-friendly. If you have a lot of people coming through your barn you probably see a lot of empty water bottles and soda cans in the trash or sitting around the aisle. Put a recycle bin next to every trash can to make it easy to dispose of recyclables. How bad is it when it comes to plastic water bottle pollution? Americans buy 29 billion water bottles a year. For every six bottles people buy, only one is recycled. That leads to a big problem given the fact that water bottles do not biodegrade, but rather photodegrade. This means that it takes at least up to 1,000 years for every single bottle to decompose, leaking pollutants into our soil and water along the way. As a result, U.S. landfills are overflowing with 2 million tons of discarded water bottles. And because plastics are produced with fossil fuels, not only does that make them an environmental hazard, but also an enormous waste of valuable resources. It takes 3 times the amount of water in a bottle of water to make it as it does to fill it. Plastic water bottles are made from a petroleum product called polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which requires giant amounts of fossil fuels to make and transport. The production of bottled water uses 17 million barrels of oil a year. That’s slightly more than it would take to fill one million cars a year with fuel. It takes almost 2,000 times the energy to manufacture a bottle of water than it does to produce tap water. If you fill a plastic water bottle so it is about 25% full, that’s about how much oil it took to make the bottle. Just a thought...
