Arizona Dressage Association

A Lesson on Form & Function On April 25th, Bellisima Ranch hosted a clinic on dressage conformation. The clinic was taught by Dorie Vlatten-Schmitz and was well attended. The clinic began with a presentation on the basics of conformation and what to look for in an ideal horse with slides showing the desired traits for dressage as well as some commom deficiencies. After that, the group moved into the covered arena and Dorie demonstrated how to assess conformation using several "volunteer" horses of all ages, breeds, and training levels. Each horse was assessed standing square and then walking both away from and toward the group. After this, each horse was free lunged in the areana so that the movement of the horse could be evalutated in relation to its conformation. Two of the most interesting points that were looked at were how the shape of the hind end affects pushing power and ground coverage and how the angle of the shoulder relates to the amount of reach in the front legs.

region 5 director's message It’s almost time for the USDF Spring Executive Board meeting, once again being held in Lexington, Kentucky. By the time May does arrive, we will have met and I’ll have more to share in my June update. We have quite a few things on our plate for the upcoming meeting and it’s always an interesting time getting together with dedicated volunteers from across our country to help work on the future of our sport. We will be discussing the USDS Strategic Plan and starting to evaluate our currently offered programs, approving the 2019 Regional Championship bids, reviewing some potential new programs and oh so much more. It’s a very informative and produc tive couple of days. There are many educational events around our Region so if you’re not spending a weekend with family or showing, consider supporting one of our well-organized and great educational opportunities sponsored by the local GMOs (Group Member Organizations) such as Arizona Dressage Association, Tucson Dressage Club, Utah Dressage Society, Rocky Mountain Dressage and so forth. The upcoming Dressage Symposium in the Rockies May 17th-20th with 6 different national and internationally known clinicians will be a special treat for our Region. Thank you to the Colorado Horse Park for hosting this event. The Rocky Mountain Dressage Society is also hosting an Instructors’ Continuing Education session with Lilo Fore on May 15th and 16th at the Colorado Horse Park. Tucson Dressage has already started planning for 2019! Mark your calendars and head south September 28-29, 2019 for a wonderful symposium with Laura Graves. As of May 16th, our potential candidates for the 2018 FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships will be finalized. As I write this in mid April, we have 4 declared Juniors and 1 declared Young Rider. I hope we have enough folks to field two full teams but it is a large endeavor and expense to take our teams to New York, so it might be a smaller year. We will at least have a great team of Juniors! It’s the experience of a lifetime for our Youth and if you would like to Continued on page 4 MAY 2018 |THE CENTERLINE | 3

contribute or help with their fundraising efforts, please contact Joan Clay, our Region 5 Jr/YR FEI coordinator at jnclay@comcast.net or 970420-0877 or Kathy Gillespie, our fundraising coordinator, at kjpagillespie@msn.com or 303921-5253. These young adults work very hard, as do their parents, trainers and friends and every little bit of support is greatly appreciated. DON’T FORGET TO TURN IN YOUR DECLARATIONS IF YOU ARE INTENDING TO TRY FOR OUR TEAMS! US Equestrian has published an updated Annex A with guidelines to bits that are legal for both national competitions and FEI competitions and it has some great illustrations. They have also updated the Dressage Tack and Attire book, so if you are looking to show this season, please be sure to read both and be current in the rules. Also, make sure you have the appropriate vaccination information with you when you travel to a horse show that is USEF recognized. Some shows are asking for the proof with your entry information, so this may help you to have it a bit more organized. If you don’t vaccinate, there are requirements you must follow in order to be on the show grounds. If you are crossing state lines, make sure you are travelling with a health certificate and a current coggins. If you have news you’d like to share, please let me know, we’re happy to get it out and about for you. Till next month! Heather Petersen Region 5 Director

Barn Tip: Velcro Care

M

ost everyone uses protective boots for riding and turn-out but between shavings, ring footing and dust, it doesn’t take long for the Velcro to loose it’s stick. The boots are easy to wash in the washing machine but even that will not help the Velcro. That takes the Furminator! Just use the Furminator made for small dogs with short hair. It will clean all the fuzz and leave the Velcro working like new. It is available on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/FURminatordeShedding-Tool-Small-Short/dp/B0040QOYZ2/ref =sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1522869902&sr=8-1&keywor ds=small+dog+short+hair+furminator for under $10. It will last a lifetime and so will your Velcro. Submit your innovative, imaginative and useful barn tips to Meredith Watters at watters4@cox.net

TDF’s Shannon Foundation Fund Awards Two Grants to Dressage Judges

A

pril 11, 2018 – TDF is pleased to announce that dressage judges Michell Combs (AZ) and Katie Rocco (MA) have each received a $1,500 Shannon Foundation Fund Grant for Judges’ Licensing to help them obtain their “recorded” (small r) license from USEF.

The purpose of the Shannon Foundation Fund for Judges’ Licensing is to provide financial support for dressage judges to participate in activities related to obtaining a judging license of “recorded” (‘small r’) or higher. Michell Combs said, “I am honored and grateful to be selected as a recipient of TDF’s Shannon Fund Grant. As a life-long student of dressage, my passion for education and training led me to a goal to become a USEF licensed dressage judge. I applied for the USEF ‘r’ dressage judge program and was selected to attend a program in New York. Because I live in Arizona, the grant will relieve some of the financial pressure associated with the program’s cost and travel. I’m looking forward to being focused and confident as I continue the education, training and testing to become an ‘r’ dressage judge.” Katie Rocco shared, “Becoming an ‘r’ judge has been a goal of mine for some years and this grant will go a long way in making it all come together. I deeply believe in doing the right thing for the horse and I have always tried to convey this belief through my comments while judging. I also strive to give feedback to riders that gives them a clear, positive picture of what took place during their ride. I intend to extend this positive perspective while I judge and hope that riders feel comfortable and relaxed while riding in my arena.” The Shannon Foundation Board of Directors, at the request of dressage professional Julie Shannon (GA), established these grants at TDF in 2016. As a successful instructor and trainer, Julie saw the need to help dressage judges who are interested in moving up the levels, to create a strong pipeline of judges in the United States. She shared, “I know many people who have spent thousands of dollars to become a dressage judge, and I respect their willingness to sit in the box all day. The Shannon Foundation, through TDF, wanted to provide financial support to help judges achieve their ratings, because they are such a necessity to the sport's growth.” Applications for the Shannon Foundation Fund grants must be submitted to The Dressage Foundation on or before March 15th of each year. Visit www.dressagefoundation.org for application information.
