“It’s all fun & games until someone finds a rattlesnake in their tackstall”

written by Patrice Scholtes-Hightower

O

bjects left lying on the ground make inviting shelter to a wide range of Arizona's creepiest, crawliest inhabitants -- a lesson I learned the hard way at last year’s ADA Spring Celebration show.

As we packed-up at the end of the show on Sunday, my husband heard a distinct rattling sound as he lifted the chair covers I'd left on the ground in a back corner of my tackstall, revealing a (disturbed) coiled rattlesnake hidden below. Westworld’s resident cowboys/snake wranglers were quickly dispatched and collected the snake, unharmed, from our stall, diffusing what could have been a very serious situation if either horse or human had sustained a bite from the venomous snake.

To hopefully spare fellow ADA Members from a similar situation while showing this Spring, allow me to share some sage advice from the experts: “Rattlesnakes are on the move in springtime, so be extra vigilant in areas where encounters are likely -- which apparently includes Westworld. Hang as

many items from tack hooks as possible, never leave tack trunk lids open, and never leave items lying on the ground. Rattlesnakes are shy animals and will only strike when left with no other option, such as when handled, accidentally stepped on, or cornered. The express purpose of that famous rattle is to keep the snake from being in a situation where it has to bite, which I think is pretty considerate. The majority of rattlesnake bites in the United States occur when someone purposely handles a rattlesnake, either by mistake or when trying to harass or kill it (yes, attempting to kill a rattlesnake is much more dangerous than leaving it alone). If you are bitten, try to stay calm and get medical treatment as quickly as possible. Remove watches, rings and other jewelry that may cause constriction during swelling. Don’t apply a tourniquet or pack the bite with ice, state wildlife officials say. Don’t cut the wound or use your mouth to suck out the venom and don’t let the victim drink alcohol.” Good luck to all, and safe showing this Spring!

~ REGION 5 DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE ~ USDF Region 5 Update – February 2019 Hope everyone is staying warm and getting a little horse time this winter! We have definitely had a lot more snow this year than the past few years and it will do our pastures well, but I am craving warmth! Thankfully my brief interludes to California help a bit, but it does make it harder to come home as well. It’s been wonderful to see so many of you from Region 5 participating in the West Coast Dressage Festivals in California. We really need to keep supporting the West Coast CDIS as much as possible. It will really help keep quality International competitions west of the Mississippi and help our trainers to stay home and teach instead of having to give up their businesses in the winter and travel to the east coast. We are accepting bids for the 2020 Great American/USDF Region 5 Championships through February 8th. If anyone is interesting is placing a bid for the Regional Championships or has any questions about the process, please contact myself or the USDF office and we’ll be happy to help! The final date for a Regional Championship to be held in 2020 will be October 13th in order to fit into the National Championship time frame, so please keep that in mind when looking at facilities and possible weekends. The Finals will be held in Lexington, Kentucky in 2019. If you have an educational activity that your barn, group or organization is doing, please let me know so I can add it to the Region 5 educational activity calendar that is sent out with the monthly Regional updates by USDF. We would love to keep everyone as informed as possible. There are many wonderful clinics and symposiums being offered all over our region that folks can audit or ride in. If you intend to qualify for Region 5 teams to the North American Youth Dressage Championships, then please note that there has been a change in the application structure for 2019. The application and fee should be turned in to the USDF office by March 19, 2019 in order to avoid stiffer fees. If you apply by March 19th, the fee is only $50. Applications submitted between March 20th and April 30th are $100 and the final application deadline is May 15th, but it will cost you $300 to apply between May 1st and May 15th. Absolutely no applications will be accepted after May 15th. If you plan to compete for NAYC, please also be sure to contact Joan Clay, our Region Coordinator for the FEI Juniors and Young Riders and let her know your intent. Her email address is jnclay@comcast.net and her phone number is 970.420.0887. The 2019 NAYC will be held at Old Salem Farm, North Salem, New York August 1-5, 2018. Till next month!
