She Talks By Susan Downs Parrish, Ph.D.

Sometimes Maronda nickers to me, but when I say she “talks” I have in mind something other than the usual horse noises. If you press me about what I hear, I’ll start with what I see—a glimmer in her eye or a flick of her ear. The glimmer or flick is equivalent to a wink or a snap of two fingers to get my attention. These gestures are meaningful to me, but it’s the “words” she “utters” that ring in my head. If we are walking on a long rein during the early stage of our warm-up and my mind wanders, she looks back and catches me out of the corner of her eye. At this moment she says, “Hey, Susan, where are you?” Certainly, I would never tell a psychologist or psychiatrist that Maronda talks to me because he or she would squint or smile and say, “You are familiar with the concept of magical thinking?” Ah, yes, magical thinking, a tendency in most children and many adults to infer a causal link between two events only coincidentally related. Superstitious behavior, such as wearing lucky underwear, is a form of magical thinking. An athlete might be more confident when wearing a particular pair of skivvies, and he might perform better, but the under garment isn’t the cause of success. Okay, okay, just don’t tell anyone about your lucky socks. Continued on page 4

Seated on Maronda’s back, my body talks to her body. Usually, I feel rather than hear her, but sometimes, her voice is unmistakable. I’ve had other horses talk to me, but Maronda is the most consistent. If you find what I’m telling you weird, listen to this: Maronda reads my thoughts. Yes, really. You see, if I want her to passage, I start by thinking passage. It’s automatic. Whatever I want her to do, I start by thinking it. How weird is that? I don’t envision the sequence of aids to be given. I’m not even sure the word comes to me. I think of the movement, just as I think about skipping if I’m going to skip. So, my brain thinks it controls her body. This probably has more to do with Maronda’s intelligence and sensitivity than my brain. She’s tuned in to what I do. She spoils me. Commentator, Melanie Smith Taylor talked with Charlotte Dujardin before the Dressage Freestyle at the Rio Olympics. Dujardin praised Valegro’s sensitivity by saying that she has only to think a movement for the horse to perform the movement. Maybe the idea of centaurs came from people who had experiences similar to what Dujardin describes— people so close to a horse that the separation between horse and human disappeared. Maybe I’m not so weird after all. Maronda entered my life eleven years ago as a four-year-old. By now, she trusts me. Animals like predictability and consistency contributes to predictability. I’m consistent to a fault. You may have heard Ralph Waldo Emerson’s words: “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines.” Emerson had in mind people who preach the same lesson every day, people who never have a new thought. They are so consistent in what they say that they are never in danger of being misunderstood. Emerson continued with: “Is it so bad, then to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood.” I’m not in the class of people to whom Emerson referred, but my consistency when working with Maronda evolves because our communication evolves. She teaches me more than I teach her. All I’m doing is developing a shared language so I can make requests. During his clinics, Charles de Kunffy likes to remind riders that: “A horse knows how to be a horse, but a rider has to learn to ride.” As I learn to ride, my body language becomes more nuanced, so only the two of us, Maronda and I, are aware of our silent

September 2019 Region 5 Message Congratulations to everyone from Region 5 who qualified and competed at the USEF Festival of Champions at the end of August at Lamplight in Illinois! We are so proud of your accomplishments. The USDF convention is coming up quickly and it’s time to book your hotel rooms, airfare and register for the convention and symposium. We are in Savanah, Georgia this year December 4th – 7th. Information and registration forms for the Convention are available at www.usdf.org/ Convention/. All Group Member Organization's (GMO) were asked to designate their delegates for the USDF convention Board of Governors meeting by August 31st and if not determined by that date, the GMO president would become the delegate. If the GMO delegate/president is not able to attend the convention, a proxy for that delegate can be submitted at any time up until the night before the BOG meeting at the convention. The advantage for the GMO is that the delegate will be known and can receive communication from the USDF office earlier. GMO Delegates are included on a list of USDF delegates to receive e-mail communications containing pertinent information on issues that will come before the 2019 BOG meeting at convention. If GMO’s have not yet sent in their delegate information, please do so as soon as possible. I always encourage all of you to attend the convention and this location is a wonderful, historic town with many things to do and see on offer. If you are planning to attend the awards dinner on Saturday evening to pick up your rider medals or yearend awards, please let me know so we can save space for you at the Region 5 tables. Don’t forget, the Great American/USDF Region 5 Championships are coming up September 19-22 in Parker, Colorado. Entries closed August 26th but we usually accept late entries, so it’s not too late! We hope to see everyone there to cheer each other on or to help volunteer!

Till next month! Heather Petersen Region 5 Director
