MUSINGS OF AN ADULT AMATEUR THE MORNING AFTER

As an amateur rider who is training her horse on her own with the assistance of consistent lessons from a trainer, I find that taking my young mare to a rated show provides a plethora of learning possibilities. After a year and a half of owning my complicated girl, I am still on the quest, but getting closer to figuring her out. The complete immersion into all of the variables that come with the show experience such as lunging, warm ups, and riding the test all come into play in helping me know how to accomplish my goals with this mare.

The Fall Fiesta hit all the buttons of learning possibilities because not only did I absorb, both mentally and physically, how to better ride my mare, I also had the golden opportunity of scribing the upper-most levels of dressage under a judge who was generous in sharing her thoughts. Watching these riders as best as I could, while jotting down the judge's comments was inspirational and I hope to carry some of the images of grace, rhythm, and accuracy home to my own riding.

Taking a horse to a rated show whereby certain skills have not yet been consistently confirmed at home can put the very idea of showing on hold for us amateurs who are doing it on our own.

DECEMBER VOLUME 22, ISSUE 12 THE CENTERLINE | 3

Dear friends of Kirsten Kuzmanic,

We are saddened to share the news, Kirsten succumbed to a hard fought battle against cancer on November 25, 2022.

Kirsten may perhaps be best remembered for her love, passion, learning and teaching of all things equestrian and especially dressage. She was a friend, trainer, coach and sounding board for her students and friends. She loved to share her knowledge. She was very patient, even with beginner dressage students and horses. She loved to have fun. She loved her many horses and other “4 legged pets” especially Lakota, her German Shepard.

While largely known in the Prescott Area as a dressage instructor, Kirsten was an accomplished dressage rider showing at the upper levels in both California and in Europe. No matter what was happening in her life, she always wanted to know, “How was your ride, what are you working on, you need to read this article, this is what you need to do.”

Kirsten worked tirelessly to promote the sport of dressage through her involvement in the Northern Arizona Chapter of the Arizona Dressage Association. Kirsten most recently held the position of Board President for the last several years. Her knowledge, support and enthusiasm for dressage will be greatly missed.

Kirsten is survived by one sister, one brother, two nieces, a nephew and many friends. She is originally from Denmark, where most of her family resides.

Wallace G was judged as Region 5 Champion 4th level Open and 4th level Freestyle Open. Additionally he was named Region 5 Reserve Champion Prix St Georges Open.

There will be a gathering to celebrate Kirsten on Saturday, January 14, 12:00 to 3:00 at the home of Cliff and Cathy Swanson, who have generously donated their residence. Food will be catered. Bring a dish if you like. The address is 18950 N. Silverado Dr., Prescott, AZ 86305. Please RSVP to Syndy Cunningham at 928-830-9329.

Donations will be collected for one of Kirsten’s favorite charities, Salt River Wild Horse Management Group, whose mission is: Ensure Their Long Term Protection and Humane Management. Traci Zenner will chair this effort. Make checks payable to Traci Zenner and bring them to the luncheon or mail to: 1421 Stratford Place, Chino Valley, AZ. 86323.

Kirsten was loved and will be remembered and missed by many.

Virginia Tech Helmet Lab Releases Equestrian Helmet Ratings

Blacksburg, Va. – On Dec. 7, the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab released the results of its first-ever rating of equestrian helmets.

Over the past two years, Virginia Tech researchers analyzed over 100 videos of riders falling off horses, precisely measured the hardness of the sand, dirt, grass, and synthetic surfaces underfoot at equestrian events, and dragged dummy heads and other equipment — and boxes and boxes of helmets — out to Virginia Tech’s equestrian facilities to simulate falls.

Then the team of researchers from the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics took that data back to the lab to recreate those events in a series of controlled, quantitative tests. They used those tests to assess 40 equestrian helmets from different manufacturers.

The result is the first set of equestrian helmet ratings from the renowned Virginia Tech Helmet Lab

If a rider’s head hits the ground in a fall, their helmet can determine whether the rider makes it through without an injury. That’s why the Helmet Lab wanted to determine which helmets perform better than others. Of the 40 models included in this initial set of ratings, two earned the top score of five stars. Eleven earned four, and the rest earned three or below. Price isn’t necessarily a predictor of quality: One of the two five-star helmets retails for $460, and the other for $58.

The ratings apply to falls that occur at all gaits as well as jumping.

The lab’s extensive testing also shed more light on what happens during real impacts in the equestrian arena and illuminated some gaps between the required safety standards these helmets have to pass before going on the market and the actual impacts they’re subjected to when a rider is wearing them.

“Standards for equestrian helmets are typically based on severe impacts,” Duma said. “What we found is that a lot of riders come off at lower velocities, and many helmets are too stiff to effectively cushion those softer impacts. The helmets that perform better are able to deal with different energy levels.”

Virginia Tech’s ratings also go beyond the existing standards by using a formula that considers the rotational acceleration that occurs when a rider’s head hits the ground, in addition to linear acceleration.

This is the lab’s ninth major ratings release since researchers began rating helmets in 2011. They have tested and rated helmets for varsity, youth, and flag football; soccer; cycling; hockey; snow sports; and whitewater sports, transforming the science of sports safety by giving athletes, parents, and coaches unbiased, quantitative data they can use to choose the safest equipment.

The ratings for each sport come together through a meticulous process of translating metrics from real-world head impacts into evidence-based test methods that assess helmet performance under realistic conditions.

“Every sport is different. Football is played on grass; hockey is played on ice. Those are very different from falling on dirt and sand,” Duma said. “With every sport we look at we go through detailed analysis to make sure that the biomechanics we’re testing relate specifically to those athletes. For these ratings, we determined what the acceleration profile would look like for a rider falling on the ground. Then we take that trace and bring it into the lab and recreate it, to make sure that our testing matches what a rider would experience if they fell off a horse.”

The pendulum impactor used for the equestrian helmet testing sits in a lab space outfitted with custom-built test equipment in the basement of the headquarters of the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science, an interdisciplinary investment institute where Duma is the director. When the pendulum strikes a headform protected by one of the helmets being tested, sensors inside the headform record the blow. Each helmet model was tested at three impact locations and two impact speeds that are representative of real-world falls.

The research was funded by private donors, led by equestrian enthusiast and philanthropist Jacqueline Mars and three national equestrian foundations: the U.S. Equestrian Federation, the U.S. Hunter Jumper Association, and the U.S. Eventing Association.

Duma emphasized how fortunate the lab has been to receive this kind of support. “Their gifts made these ratings possible,” he said.

“US Equestrian is not only fully committed to the welfare and protection of horses but also of our people," said David O'Connor, chief of sport at US Equestrian. "The launch of the rating system developed through the helmet research done by the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab is an exponential step in improving equipment in the world that will reduce the risk of injuries. We are proud to have supported this research and congratulate the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab on their progressive work for the benefit of all equestrians.”

The equestrian ratings, and those for the other sports the lab has studied, are available on the Virginia Tech Helmet Ratings website, along with the corresponding test methods. That allows companies to use the protocols to evaluate designs and prototypes, optimizing a new helmet’s safety profile before it ever hits the market.

Awesome

I grew up sitting on a horse. I loved the feel and movement of a horse, and the adults in my life indulged me. My uncle Bud, a “real” cowboy who knew how to run a ranch, unlike the guys who rode in rodeos, spent hours watching me ride in circles around him. He treated me as if I were awesome, although he never used the word.

My mother loved to ride, so we went to lots of gymkhanas and horse shows. Having spent so many hours astride a horse, ribbons lined my bedroom walls. My success impressed a guy who had a ten-year-old son. At one show, before the start of a bareback equitation class in which I was riding a mare named Paleface, he told his son to follow me and do whatever I did. The boy placed his horse’s head about one horse’s length away from Paleface’s tail. I kept circling back to get away from the boy. Of course, he was following his father’s instructions as he understood them —if I circled, he circled. Sometime after this show, this guy invited me to have lunch with his family. Mom must have said yes. Before long, I was having lunch, then helping wash dishes. I stood at the sink with my right leg bent, so my foot rested on the inside of my left knee. Today, we view this stance as a common Yoga position. At age nine, I just liked to stand in this manner.

Suddenly, the man of the house said, “Oh, my gosh! Look at her! Look at how she’s standing. She’s so awesome.”

My first impulse was to run out of the house. Why my stance impressed him, I had no idea. It didn’t help to explain that it was just the way I liked to stand. This guy’s son must have hated me, but he never expressed any animosity. Of course, there was no way we were going to be friends.

Now, I’m well into my seventies and, in my mind, I’m nothing like that nine-year-old girl. My husband, Ron, died on October 17 of this year and I’m having to take care of things that he used to manage. When I explain to someone why they are having to deal with me and not the man of the house, several people have said, “You’re so strong.” On hearing this description, my first thought is, “Do I have a choice?” The second thought is that what they are really saying is, “Oh please, don’t fall apart on me! Please be strong!” Their fear is understandable; they are not telling me that I’m remarkable.

As usual, the Tucson Dressage Club Fall Festival I and II took place in the middle of November. I attended and got several hugs, which were appreciated. This was the first show without Ron. Attending helped me focus on short term goals, which promotes healing. Despite the support and Maronda being at her best, participation wasn’t easy.

In general, friendliness blends with my expectations, but hearing the label awesome or some equivalent startles me. One person labeled me athletic. Athletic catches my attention because I’m not doing anything that I haven’t been doing daily for the last sixty some years. What’s remarkable about my routine? A few people have told me that I’m not just awesome, but “truly” awesome. Okay. Again, what’s awesome about a daily routine?

Athletic and awesome have ruminated in my brain and finally it occurs to me that at age seventy-something, just breathing and walking around without falling is remarkable—awesome! So my advice to you is if you want to be awesome, keep doing what you’re doing and wait until you enter your seventies, and you too will be awesome! Count on it.
