PLAYERS TALK Q: I never paid attention to who makes the slot games until I started reading your magazine. Now I realize that most of the games I like to play are made by Konami. There are a few different games I play. I’ve noticed that some casinos have my favorite slots with a maximum of 20 lines and some with a maximum of 30 lines. Which one do you suggest I play? Thank you for your Q&A section. I always learn so much! Maria Vertuccio – Phoenix, Arizona A: That’s a great question Maria. Most people would think to play the 20 line game for what appears to be a logical and obvious reason. Clearly, 20 lines requires less of a bet than 30 lines and, therefore, must be the correct game to play, right? Wrong! What many players fail to recognize is that for almost 99% of the slots on the floor, the 30 line game uses the exact same mathematical structure as the 20 line math model. You are playing the exact same game. The advantage you gain with the 30 line version of the slot is the greater hit frequency. In some cases, the 30 line slot can give you up to 50% higher hit frequency over the 20 line slot, and who doesn’t want to win more often? You will definitely notice the difference between the two games; even with a small bankroll of just $10. You’ll feel the increased wins. The extra 10 lines will really pay off during a free games bonus with much larger bonus wins (on average). Do a comparison and see for yourself! Q: It seems that as soon as I get a really great bonus win on a slot, the machine shuts down … I never feel like any machine stays “hot” for a while!! It just takes my money back right away because if I do get any other bonuses they’re usually awful. Why is that? Why are all the other bonuses so small? Jean Weber – Tucson, Arizona Jean, I understand what you mean and I commiserate with you! What determines how a bonus is going to payout is entirely based on the game’s math model and the random number generator (RNG). The game’s mathematician sets up the probabilities of certain events occurring and the RNG randomly picks combinations based on these probabilities. Generally speaking, low bonus wins tend to be programmed with odds of occurring 50% of the time, the medium wins occur 40% of the time, and the high wins occur only 10% of the time. You only have a 1% chance of winning high amounts in two consecutive bonus games (to do this mathematical calculation, you need to multiply the odds of hitting the great bonus twice which is 10% x 10%). Unfortunately, 1% is very low and that’s reality. You have a 25% chance of winning two low bonus amounts consecutively (50% x 50%). The good news is that you are the most likely to get low and medium wins in successive bonus games. The probability of this happening is a whopping 81% [(50% + 40%) x (50% + 40%)]. Luckily, this is a much better statistic indeed! $

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF GAMING—PART II How To Psychologically Prepare Yourself For Gambling
D
oes your psychological mood and well-being have any effect on your gambling? Are you kidding me? Do ants line up for a picnic? Well, that’s what will happen at the casino if you aren’t well-prepared. Players at the poker tables will be licking their chops when you sit down, and those hungry slots will eat you alive. So, can you really prepare yourself to gamble? Sure, every successful athlete gets prepared to take the field or the court. They eat well, they stretch, go through training, and they get plenty of sleep. You might not be a Roman Gladiator going into battle when you enter the casino, but it helps to think like one. How well do you think you’ll do if you haven’t had any sleep? You wouldn’t go to work without sleeping, would you? Never mind, don’t answer that. A casino is a place that oozes money, but to walk away with the cash; you’ll need to be persistent, aware, and lucky. Anyone can get lucky and win, but to be consistently successful takes work. Know Your Games People who fret over which tomato paste to buy seem to have no problem plunking down ten bucks a pop on a table game they’ve never played. That’s weird. Do yourself and your pocketbook a favor and learn the game and the bets first. At least watch the action or sit at an empty table and ask the dealer about the game. If it sounds too confusing, move on. Life’s better when you’ve got a clue. And when you’re able to concentrate. So, make sure you have a bite to eat before you gamble. Fretting over your wagers consumes a lot of energy – physically and emotionally. I can’t tell you to get emotionally stable before you gamble because that would be hypocritical, but poker legend Doyle Brunson says that when he’s not up to it because of a misunderstanding or disagreement with a friend or family member he heads to the movies instead of the casino. Solid Prep Work Being happy goes a long way in successful gambling. Gambling should be fun, not stressful. Being in a hurry to get your bets down won’t help. So, walk the razor’s edge between setting a
14 Arizona Gaming Guide | August 2019 | azgamingguide.com
time limit for your play and still refusing to be in a hurry. As our body tires, our brain draws more energy to function at full capacity. As someone who occasionally isn’t functioning on all cells, take it from me. You’ll do much better if you play for short periods, even if that means taking a break to walk outside to smell the fresh air or get something to drink. It will clear your mind. Then, come back ready to gamble. Does that sound silly? You drove to the casino to gamble, right? But did you maybe hedge your bets a little along the way? Did you skip that double down at blackjack when you had a big edge, or fail to raise when you had a monster at poker? If there’s anything I do know about the gaming business, it’s that players don’t get to have the odds in their favor that often. When you do, it should be full steam ahead. So be rested, prepared, and ready to fire. Then, have fun! $ Writer Al Moe has worked in the casino industry for many years. He has lived and worked in Las Vegas, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. He also attended the University of Nevada, Reno. He is an avid writer and blogger. His book, “Vegas and the Mob," is available online at Amazon.com. ACE-7 The Most Misplayed Hand In Blackjack
W
hat if I offered you the proposition that you could play Blackjack and you would have an 18 on every hand? Plus, you could bet whatever you wanted! Would you take that bet? Most players think that 18 is a strong hand and are happy to be dealt that hand. However, in the long run, the hand of 18 will lose .05% of all money wagered, making it a negative expectation hand. It's no wonder that it seems no matter how skilled a player is, they always misplay the hand of 18—especially when it's made up of an Ace-7! If you know basic strategy, it will tell you that with an Ace-7 you should stand when the dealer shows a 7 or 8, double down when the dealer shows a 2-6, and hit when the dealer’s up card is a 9,10 or Ace. However, many players deviate from basic strategy because it doesn't seem like the correct play. For example, with Ace-7 against a dealer up card of a 6, basic strategy tells you to double down. It is true that if you stand you will win more hands than if you double down. After all, 18 is a strong hand against a dealer up card of a 6. It is also true that if you double down you can only improve the hand with a 2, 3, or an Ace, and if you receive a 10 it doesn't help or hurt the hand, but you potentially take the dealer’s bust card.
well as hitting a soft 18 made up of 3 or more cards. The same holds true with Ace-7 vs. a dealer up card of an Ace. The expected return of hitting the hand is -0.1004 and the expected return of standing is -0.1005. Hitting is slightly better in the long run. If you do the math, basic strategy is the right way to play Ace-7 over time. I have a brand new book out called How To Become A Blackjack Jedi. It teaches you everything you need to know and some things that you haven’t even thought of. Order it on my website at FreeWebs.com/TJsBlackjackCorner/MyBook.htm. $
If you get a 4,5,6,7,8,or 9 it makes the hand worse. If you double down your Ace-7 and get a 5, you find yourself with the hand of 13 with twice as much money bet, and this doesn't seem right to many players. If you double down Ace-7, you will make it worse about 50% of the time and you will lose more hands because of this. Yet by doubling the amount of your bet with Ace-7 vs. a dealer up card of a 6, you will win 10% more money in the long run than if you were to stand. So, essentially, you win less hands but win more money! And which would you rather have? If you have Ace-7 against a dealer's up card of a 10 and stand, you will lose more money than you will win. If you hit instead of standing, you will also lose more money than you will win, just not as much. So hitting Ace-7 vs. a 10 is the correct play as

CRAPS BASICS Sharing Knowledge Of & Appreciation For Electronic Table Games
O
ver the next few months, I am going to do my best to explain the game of Craps to you. I am just a recreational gambler, looking for fun, and hoping to stretch my gambling dollars. I have found that playing the electronic versions of the popular table games, Craps, Roulette and Baccarat, allows me to do just that. The image on this page contains an example of a Craps betting layout. It does not conform to any specific machine type. I created it from memory using my presentation tool of choice. A convention I used, that is not typical to most Craps layouts, is the Blue border. I did this to identify the location of One-Roll bets which I will explain later. I will refer to this layout throughout this series of articles. Craps offers a variety of bets, each with their own payout. The payout depends on several factors; the type of bet, the amount, when the bet is made, the manufacturer of the machine, etc. There are two types of bets: Multi-roll bets and Proposition, or One-roll bets A Multi-roll bet may require more than one roll to determine if it wins or loses. These bets have the best chance of winning and include PASS, DON’T PASS, COME, DON’T COME, Place, Buy, Lay, and Hardways (this bet is the least likely Multi-roll bet to win). A Proposition bet’s outcome is determined by the next roll of the dice. These bets are the least likely to win but pay the most. A rule of thumb is, the larger the payout, the least likely to win. Most bets can be made at any time; however, they must be made within the time limit between the rolls of the dice. The PASS bet can only be made during the Come Out roll. The Come Out roll is the first roll in a set. It will either win, lose or establish the point. A PASS bet will win immediately if 7 or 11 is rolled. A DON’T PASS bet will lose. Conversely, a DON’T PASS bet will win if Craps (2, 3 or 12) is rolled and a PASS bet will lose. The winning bets are paid even money except for the 12, which is a push, signified by the BAR ⚅⚅. The 2, 3, 7, 11 and 12 are referred to as naturals as they are resolved during the Come Out roll. The
18 Arizona Gaming Guide | August 2019 | azgamingguide.com
game gets more interesting when a non-natural number is rolled. If the Come Out roll is 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 then the number becomes the point. Pass line bets are locked and cannot be removed. If the point is rolled again, before a 7, then the PASS bet wins. If Craps are rolled, or the 11, nothing happens, and the dice are rolled again until the point wins or loses. The ODDS bet can only be made once a point is established. If the point is rolled then the payout is based on the actual or true odds. It is the best bet you can make. To get you started I suggest the following strategy: 1. Select a chip denomination $1, $2 or $5. 2. Touch the PASS box. A chip should appear. 3. If a point is rolled then touch the PASS ODDS box. 4. If you win, then repeat steps 2 and 3, increasing the PASS ODDS bet by one chip until you reach the bet maximum. 5. When you lose, restart at step 2. I hope you have enough information to try Craps. I have barely scratched the surface. $ Writer Daniel Cruikshank lives in Arizona is retired and has been an Electronic Table Games player for decades.

CASINO BINGO By Teaya Vicente
NEW BINGO PLAYER HITS GRAND SLAM $136,350 Jackpot Awarded At Gila River Hotels & Casinos—Lone Butte
B
renda Gajiola was enjoying a fun night out with friends on June 21 at Gila River Hotels & Casinos – Lone Butte when things started to get serious. She looked down at her Bingo board and noticed six numbers together in a diamond shape. She needed just two more balls, then one…then she saw ball i-22 drawn on the screen and she screamed “Bingo!” She had just won $136,350 in Lone Butte’s Grand Slam Jackpot. “I was in shock. I was shaking as I tried to find my ticket,” Gajiola said, adding that she never won a large prize before. In fact, this was her fourth time playing Bingo, and just her second time playing the game at Lone Butte. “My friends and I normally do a ‘paint and wine night,’ and we were looking for something different to do,” she said. “We had gone to Lone Butte the week before, and two of us won twice. It was a fun atmosphere and there were people around us winning $300 prizes. We received a coupon to use on another day, and that’s why we returned on Friday night.” Her initial investment was just $45 for three hours of play. “Had I not had that coupon, it would have cost $65,” she said. “In the past, I thought Bingo was boring, but now that the technology has changed, my friends and I can spend time catching up while the machines do the work for us,” she said. “For us, it’s really about being together and having a fun girl’s day or night out.” A Mesa resident, Gajiola is a single mother who works in the finance department of a private university. On the night she won, she immediately took $5,000 cash and gave $2,000 each to her best friend Linda and Linda’s sister, Ruby. “They are my lucky charms,” she said. “I wanted them to feel like they won as well.” Within a week of winning, she bought a new car and helped one of her sons put a down payment on a car. “It was great timing for us,” she said. “Just a few weeks prior, my mother had asked me if I thought I could ever buy a new car again. I raised both of my boys on my own, and it has been challenging to save money. I didn’t think it would be possible.”
22 Arizona Gaming Guide | August 2019 | azgamingguide.com
After a few days of car shopping, she paid cash for a 2018 Nissan Rogue and helped her son purchase a 2016 Kia Optima. She plans to help her other son with some expenses and she will use the rest of her winnings towards paying off her mortgage. She and her friends will continue to play Bingo and they may try some new games. “I’m a believer now that anyone can win,” she said. “Overall, it’s a fun experience and a great way to socialize.” For more information about Bingo or Gila River Hotels & Casinos, visit their website at PlayAtGila.com. $

rizona Downs’ inaugural summer horse racing season is underway. Thousands of fans have walked through the admission gates, but few know everything that has gone on behind the scenes to prepare for the summer meet. Fans will thrill at the thundering sound of hooves racing to the finish line, but may not consider, for instance, how horses are selected to compete in any particular race. Because “fan education” is a top priority for the management team at Arizona Downs, they’re taking every opportunity to explain the sport, including the role Randy Wehrman plays as Racing Secretary. The better you understand the sport, the greater the appreciation. Knowledge is also powerful if you happen to be a betting fan. So how are horses selected? It’s not a simple process, and it begins with what is known as the “Condition Book.” Sounds boring, but this book is a “must read” for anyone who is serious about competing in the industry – as a racehorse owner or train-

er. It’s also a great tool for a serious bettor. The Condition Book, which is Mr. Wehrman’s responsibility to produce, lays out the conditions, or criteria that horses must meet in order to compete in each of the races. The conditions include: the sex and age of horses that can enter a race; the claiming price; the distance; and lastly, specific conditions that a horse is eligible for relevant to accumulated career wins. For example, a maiden race is specifically for horses that have never won a race in their lifetime. But there are also races specifically for horses that have a career win, or multiple wins, within a specified period of time. Another important sub-condition of each race is the weight allowance. A weight allowance may enable one horse to get into a race carrying less weight than other horses. A horse that hasn’t won a race within 30 days, for instance, may get a two-pound weight allowance over a horse that has had a recent win. An extra pound or two can make a huge difference at the finish line.
ARIZONA DOWNS
The most successful horsemen spend a great deal of time studying and analyzing this data to determine which races and qualifying conditions provide the best competitive advantage for each of their horses. Like any other sport, “scouting” is key to finishing first. A savvy bettor will study the Condition Book for the very same reason - to determine which horses have the best chances to win any given race on any given race day. When you visit the summer races, you’ll immediately begin to see which betting fans are in it to win it. They’ll spend time at the Paddock, studying horses prior to their races. Just like football players, track runners, and other athletes, horses can occasionally be off their game. Serious bettors also study the trainers and jockeys, and learn who is best suited to win races based on the given conditions. As you can see, what the Racing Secretary does is truly a science. But Mr. Wehrman’s end goal is always to create a racing season that is exciting for everyone - families who are new to horse racing, and more serious bettors who will be wagering on the horses. If you’re interested in learning more about the incredible sport
of horse racing, you’re in luck. Arizona Downs hosts “Pickin’ the Ponies” workshops throughout their summer racing season.
Randy Wehrman, Racing Secretary at AZ Downs
The Arizona Downs’ admission gates open at 10 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, and post time for the first race is 1 p.m. General admission is $2. Kids 10 and under are free. To see the complete racing and promotions calendar, purchase tickets, or book an event, visit ArizonaDowns.com. $

HARRAH’S AK-CHIN CASINO BUFFET A Personal Experience
T
he palpable excitement can barely be contained at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino as the renovations in The Buffet are finally complete. So, you may be asking, “What’s the hype about?” Well, I’m here to provide the inside scoop. During a recent visit to The Buffet, I spoke with Manager, Johnathon, about the latest renovations. He was extremely nice, very informative, and was keen to discuss some of the brand new highlights of The Buffet. For starters, there’s a new self-serve bar. The Buffet at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino now offers plenty of options for personalized meals. During Lunch and Sunday Brunch, the self-serve bar features an omelet station which includes several different toppings to mix in and try. Everyone will be pleased! During Dinner, the self-serve bar switches over to Italian cuisine. Several different noodles and sauces are available, along with additional toppings, to make a delectable pasta to satisfy any appetite. Another new addition is the pizza station. There is a “Chef Pizza” which is a specialty for the day. American pizza favorites like pepperoni and cheese are available as well. For those of you with a sweet tooth, “Pizookies” are offered daily as well. There is a personalized breakfast section in this station as well (during Lunch) that includes tasty French toast, mouthwatering bacon, and other breakfast delights. I recommend trying the French toast as it is crispy, light, and sweetened with just a hint of powdered sugar. Different paintings by local artists hang on the walls of The Buffet and add to the aesthetics. For Diamond and Seven Stars players (the two highest tiers in the Caesars Rewards players club program), The Buffet has a new private seating area to enjoy! The decor is elegantly placed throughout this area with a modern yet simple feel. Throughout The Buffet, the recent renovations allow for plenty of room for patrons to spread out and relax within a quiet ambiance and an almost Zenlike atmosphere. The Buffet is the perfect venue to hold a fun social gathering. As I expected, The Buffet employees are cordial and polite. My server came to the table several times to take away dirty dishes, while also checking to make sure I had enough to drink. The workers promote a friendly environment that is pleasant and fun. Excellent service is always a plus when guests dine at a casino and The Buffet at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino exceeded my expectations.
At The Buffet there is a large variety of food to try which is, obviously, expected at a casino. From Mexican to Western to Asian, there’s a cuisine for everyone. Personally, I found the fresh guacamole to be very tasty and acted as a fantastic dip for chips and as an excellent topping to the entrees. Also, a healthier option to fried chips or French fries are The Buffet’s sweet potato chips. They are sweet, yummy, and light. The specialty meats offered at the carving station are classic and hearty. Be sure to eat a variety of foods when you visit The Buffet as your tummy will not be disappointed! The dessert bar, one of my guilty pleasures, offers some of my personal favorites, including gelato and mini-cheesecakes. The Buffet provides several beverage options including fruit juices, Pepsi products, tea, coffee, milk, and whatever you desire from the bar (at an additional cost). Your tasty meal will be accompanied by a refreshing ice cold drink. The next time you visit Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino, be sure to take a delightful break from gambling and eat at The Buffet. It’s definitely worth your time, as I’m going back for seconds! The hours for The Buffet are Monday – Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for Lunch ($14.99) and Sunday - Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. for Dinner ($19.99). The seafood buffet ($31.99) is available on Fridays and Saturdays starting at 4 p.m. as well as a champagne brunch ($21.99) on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. About Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino: Celebrating nearly 25 years in Maricopa, Arizona, Harrah’s AkChin Casino is Arizona’s first and only tribal casino to have an international management partner. Harrah’s Ak-Chin is the only casino in Arizona that allows guests, through its Caesars Rewards program, to unlock benefits and other prizes that can be used worldwide at the entire Caesars’ family of casinos. Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino also boasts the only Bingo hall in the Caesars organization, continuing the proud heritage of William F. Harrah, who opened his first Bingo hall in Reno in 1937. In addition to its slot machines, video poker, video Keno, statewide progressives and live action poker and Blackjack, Harrah’s AkChin Casino guests can also enjoy a variety of dining options, including the Copper Cactus Grill, Chop, Block & Brew, Oak & Fork, Agave’s Restaurant, and Dunkin’ Donuts®. SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker
HOW TO CHANGE YOUR BAD MOOD Here Are A Few Simple Techniques Which May Help You
T
his column is a forum for really bad experiences at casinos and for really good ones too. Along the way I have also provided readers with some tips I find useful as a casino enthusiast. In this month’s column, I’ll present some tips which I’m hoping help readers as much as they help me. As I’m noticing more and more frantic behavior from other casino patrons and an increase in the grouchy, whiny, unhappy, and complainy (that’s not a word but you know what I mean) people on casino floors, I think this topic is timely and appropriate. 1. Admit you are in a bad mood. Awareness is key! 2. Focus on things you are grateful for. Be grateful not hateful! I wake up in the morning and am thankful for all five senses, my health, my loved ones, my house, my bed, my employment, and I think you get the idea and can take it on your own from here. 3. Move around. Exercise by walking from one slot to another! You could always do a few laps (walking, not running) around
34 Arizona Gaming Guide | August 2019 | azgamingguide.com
the casino floor. 4. Pay it forward. Giving (tips, compliments, etc.) promotes feelings of goodwill. 5. Smile. Laugh. Even if you have to force it. There’s always something to smile and laugh about at a casino. Begin by smiling and laughing at yourself. If that doesn’t help, I’m sure you can recall a situation where you said or did something funny, or when a loved one did something silly. 6. Change your environment. Ok, any of you casino managers reading this right now, don’t get your shorts in a twist! Let me explain. Cash out, get up, walk to the change machine and collect your money, put it in your wallet, walk (remember number 3) over to the coffee shop, the deli, or a restaurant and spend the next 15 to 60 minutes enjoying just being there. Then, pick a new game somewhere else in the casino! I hope this helps improve your casino experience. Good Luck! $

OK, We Love Arizona But It’s So Hot Here That... you can fry an egg on the sidewalk. the birds have to use potholders to pull worms out of the ground. you don’t think twice seeing a fellow driver using oven mitts to steer. the potatoes cook underground, and all you have to do to have lunch is to pull one out and add butter, salt and pepper. farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying hard-boiled eggs. the cows are giving evaporated milk. the trees are whistling for the dogs. you can say 123 degrees without fainting. you eat hot chilis to cool your mouth off. you can make instant sun tea. you learn that a seat belt makes a pretty good branding iron. you've experienced condensation on your butt from the hot water in the toilet bowl. you discover that you can get a sunburn through your car window. you actually burn your hand opening the car door. you realize that asphalt has a liquid state. you take rain dances seriously.
