WHAT ARE THEY DOING? Video Poker & Slot Lurkers Exposed

Dear AZ Gaming Guide: My mom and I went to play at [a casino] yesterday. They just put a bunch of video poker machines that we both like a lot because there are a ton of games to choose from. My favorite to play is Ultimate X and my mom likes that game too and Ultimate X Bonus Streak. We played at these machines together all afternoon and the entire time that we played there was an older man who kept coming to the machines as soon as someone would get up and leave. He would go through every single game and every single bet level searching for leftover multipliers on the screen. It was so annoying! Can you imagine? First of all, there are so many different games at each bet level of 5 cents, 10 cents and 25 cents. He would go through them all! Then, sure enough, he would find one or two multipliers left on the screen. So, my mom and I started to watch him to see if this guy is really making any money with the leftover multipliers? Guess what? He lost money every single time!!! He’d put in $20 and usually cash out anywhere between $8 and $13! All he did was annoy all of us playing and he didn’t even win! This old man was not the first one I’ve seen do this. Actually, I’d say almost every single time I go and play there’s someone doing this at the machines. First of all, most of the time, there aren’t any multipliers even left on the game. Second of all, it doesn’t even seem like they’re making any money! So, my question to you is why the heck are they doing this? It seems pointless to me. You have to have a lot of patience waiting around for people to get up and then hope for a multiplier to be left on the screen. Am I missing something because there are so many people doing this that it must work for somebody sometime? Jessica F.—Via email, Phoenix Metro Area Thanks for your great question Jessica! Honestly, you aren't missing anything. Clearly you already know Video Poker is your best bet at the casino. We hope you are playing as close to optimal strategy as you can on the best available pay table. Putting all that aside, and not directing this at you, but to all those lurkers out there, there are several things to consider. First, why do you think slot machine manufacturer IGT is enjoying so much success with Ultimate X and Ultimate X Bonus Streak? They obviously created these games for a reason, to hook players into playing off just one more hand because of a multiplier that is hanging around! That idea seems to be working well enough that we’ve seen entire crews of lurkers sprinting from one game to the next in a casino. Sometimes we’ll see the same lurkers across multiple casinos. Talk about annoying!

06 Arizona Gaming Guide | July 2022 | azgamingguide.com

Second, in order to access the multiplier a previous player left out there, you are forced to place a wager. Not only do you have to make a bet, but now you have to win! By the way, getting Jacks or Better on the deal has odds of just under 1 to 8. That’s an unlikely event given you are only playing one hand. These lurkers do only play one hand, right? No, they don’t. Not based on our observations! And, they keep coming back... Third, if you’re not dealt a winner, now you have to draw into one! And, since most Ultimate X games with leftover multipliers are multi-hand games, now you have to draw into a winner on the hand with the multiplier! Since the probability of drawing into a winner on Jacks or Better is about 55%, on a one hand game, a 2X multiplier or better will offset the potential loss. But you still have to have that winner! And, on a three hand game you need at least a 4X multiplier on one hand or the sum of more than 4X (2X + 2X, but now you need two winners!) across all the hands to offset any potential loss. For a five hand game the multiplier better be 6X. For a ten hand game the multiplier needs to be 11X. With Ultimate X Bonus Streak, since you are forced into a max bet to access the multipliers for the next hand, that wager on a ten hand game in quarters is a whopping $25! Are you ready for that? The minimum total multiplier available on the next hand better be at least 20X! Finally, there have always been slot lurkers. Now, because manufacturers are making more slots with perpetuating features (that is bonuses or wins that are “must-hit-by,” “collect until,” “carryovers from the previous spin,” etc.), and because we believe people are more desperate, there are more and more slot lurkers. Guess what? They’re not getting ahead either. All this lurking is only a convenient justification for continued gambling. Again, that’s why the slot manufacturers put these game concepts out there initially decades ago. Now, the manufacturers and the casino Slot Directors are reaping the rewards of these “innovative” math models. To our team members, this is old news. We were involved in designing these kinds of game concepts for slots over twenty years ago. As a result, we could do a deep dive into the return to player percentages for both Video Poker and the slots to prove lurking is a strategy that only under very specific conditions sets up a better than 100% game. But, unfortunately due to space considerations, we’ve had to simplify and condense our response. We hope this helps. Thank you to all our readers and fans for your questions and comments. We appreciate you! Have Fun & Good Luck! $

VIDEO POKER CORNER By Lana Hartmann

QUICK TIPS ON POPULAR GAMES PART II Learn About Your Favorite Or Try Something New

L

ast month I presented some tips on Jacks or Better, Double Double, Deuces Wild, and Joker’s Wild. Based on your comments in our mailbox and inbox, you want more! BANKROLL Determine your video poker bankroll before your next trip based on the denomination you will play and then stick to it! For pennies, try $20 for a 5 credit max bet per hand (for three or five-play games you’ll need $60 or $100). For nickels—try $80. For quarters—try $400. For dollars—try $1,600. MORE TIPS FOR DEUCES WILD When playing Deuces Wild, it’s all about what you hold with the Deuces. I’ve tried to really simplify the strategy below in order to still be close to optimal play and be easy to remember:

If you are dealt three Deuces, keep only a Wild Royal Flush and a Five-of-a-Kind. If you don’t have either of these hands, then keep only the three Deuces and discard the rest. If you are dealt two Deuces, keep all 4-of-aKinds or better and four to the Wild Royal Flush. Otherwise, keep the Deuces only.

INCREASING THE PAYBACK Any video poker game that is connected to a progressive will boost your long-term payback percentage! Therefore, you should be aware of the fact that one casino in Arizona may offer an 8/5 Jacks or Better pay table (8 for the full house and 5 for the flush at bet one) with no progressive and just a short drive away, another casino may offer the same pay table with a progressive. Using 8/5 Jacks or Better as an example, a common pay table in most casinos across Arizona, the long-run payback of this game is just over 97% using optimal strategy. Since a common increment rate for a video poker progressive is 1%, the long-run payback for the 8/5 Jacks or Better connected to the progressive can get over 98%! Let’s examine how the payback percentage increases as the progressive values increase by taking a look at the Royal Flush (when using optimal strategy):

5 Credit 25¢ 8/5 Jacks or Better Royal Flush is at least $1,000 Royal Flush is at least $1,200 Royal Flush is at least $1,350 Royal Flush is at least $1,500

Payback Percentage 97.30% 97.70% 98.00% 98.30%

If dealt only one Deuce, then keep all the hands that pay, four to a Wild Royal Flush and four to a Straight Flush.

Playing video poker is the smartest bet. Your long run payback percentage will be way higher than on the video slots. But, make sure to shop around for the best pay tables, find the games connected to a progressive, and then wait for those values to climb.

Otherwise, keep only the one Deuce.

Have Fun! $

AVOIDING CASINO HONEY TRAPS Four Tips To Consider

I

love gambling, and now with live craps, roulette, and baccarat in Arizona casinos, there’s not much reason to head to Vegas. However, Las Vegas has a mystique.

As the first state with legalized gaming, Nevada got a huge jump on other states. And mobsters got a huge jump on beating the locals and the IRS out of millions of dollars in taxable cash by skimming it before anyone knew it was gone. Still, Arizona has a colorful gambling past dating to before Wyatt Earp showed up in 1879 and acquired a casino with his brothers, Virgil and Morgan. His friend Doc Holiday fared well at the poker tables but not at the O. K. Corral, where he took a bullet in a gunfight (October 26, 1881) that pitted him and the Earp brothers against cowboys Billy and Ike Clanton and Frank and Tom McLaury. Doc survived, and so did the casinos in Tombstone, Bisbee, and Prescott, where the Weekly Arizona Miner reported the same year that Tombstone had a poker game going 24-hours ($2.50 ante, $10 to call). At home in Prescott, there was a long-running game with a $4 ante and $16 to call the first bet. In today’s cash, that first round of betting would be over $500. Las Vegas offers prize fights, big-name concerts, and pool parties with the world’s most popular DJs. And those can be honey traps. Not bad, perhaps, but the city isn’t easy on the pocketbook. If you like being seen on the Strip in Facebook posts, go for it, but don’t forget how good we’ve got it in Arizona. SOMETIMES THE GOOD IS BAD Whether you are heading out to the Silver State, Nevada, or staying in the Copper State, Arizona, there are subconscious things we all fall prey to that can be emotional excuses to drop more cash than we were planning to let slip through our fingers. And like a bear searching honey, it’s always good to know where the traps and the bees are, so follow along, and you can avoid being stung. “Finally,” you’re probably saying, “there’s no math and probability stuff this month.” Yeah, we all accept that the casino’s got

the edge when we go out for our next helping of excitement. #1 FOMO The fear of missing out (FOMO) is a tremendous psychological trap. When playing, the idea that we might miss just one hand of poker, blackjack, or the tumble of dice almost commands us to get a bet down quickly. Relax; the casino’s open 24-hours. #2 BRIGHT LIGHTS BIG CITY Inside the casino, everything twinkles. The lights are bright, there aren’t many windows, and the clocks have all disappeared. Set a time to quit and stick to it. Nobody makes good decisions at three in the morning. Free alcohol is dangerous too, so enjoy a drink or two but moderation is smart. #3 DON’T CHASE YOUR LOSSES You did set a budget for your gaming today, didn’t you? Enjoy the entertainment you’ve experienced and head home instead of going from the frying pan of short cash into the fire of no cash. #4 TAKE RESPONSIBILITY We win or lose our bets. Nobody beats us. Not the dealer, the cards, or the dice. And when we win, it’s all us. $ Writer Al Moe has worked in the casino industry for many years. He has lived and worked in Las Vegas, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. He also attended the University of Nevada, Reno. He is an avid writer and blogger. His book, “Vegas and the Mob," is available online at Amazon.com. MY REAL WORLD I Open My Books And Show You What Happened

E

very month I share with you tips and advice on the game of blackjack in hopes that it will improve your play and make you a better player. I personally practice my game almost every day. I believe that if I am going to put my money at risk on the blackjack table my game should be flawless. As a result, I play a perfect game of blackjack. I don’t make mistakes, I don’t play hunches or gut feelings. There is one correct play for each hand and I make it. I know some players may think, “He talks a good game but, what about the real world, can he back it up?” I have been keeping track of my blackjack play since the 1990s. I know where I play, and how much I win or lose in each playing session. So, I thought it would be fun to play $10 tables and record the results I get. Keep in mind that I do not play side bets. It’s just my skills at blackjack against the dealer. We will begin this adventure in February of this year. On the first, I started off with a $100 win. I’ve left out the names of the casinos so as not to reveal where I play most often. Then, I continued with a $55 win on the 2nd, followed by two $100 wins on the 5th and 6th. I had another win on the 17th of $45 and then I had my first loss of $45 on the 25th. Later on the 25th, I had a win of $300 followed by two wins on the 28th of $100 and $150. I played nine sessions of about an hour each and won eight of them. My total win for the month was $905. That calculates to an hourly wage of a little more than $100 an hour. This March, I started off with wins of $65, $50, $100, $35, $25, $50, and $100 before losing $60 and $120. Then, I had wins of $175, $25, $115, $115 and $130. So, I won twelve times and lost two sessions. Total win for the month: $805, hourly wage $57.50. The thing to keep in mind is the long term results. I try to end every session with a win, no matter how small. That’s because while playing, if I get ahead, I will take a small amount and make that my win-loss point. So, if I get down to that I will walk away with a profit, no matter how small. Take notice that some sessions I only show a $25 win! There is a good chance if I kept playing they could have easily turned into a loss. If you play this way, your wins, even though they might be on the small side, add up. Just because you bought in for a certain amount of chips, doesn’t mean that you have to lose them all before you walk away. I can’t tell you how many times I have switched

18 Arizona Gaming Guide | July 2022 | azgamingguide.com

tables with just four chips, and come back with everything I lost plus a $100 profit at a different table. When I sit down at a $10 blackjack table I usually buy in for around $60. If I lose that, I think about switching tables before digging into my pocket for more cash. All of these little tips will make it easier for you to start showing a profit from your blackjack play. I recommend everyone keep a little notebook on their blackjack sessions. It will also help you find a problem in your game that maybe needs improvement! If I didn’t make money month after month, year after year, I wouldn’t do it, it’s as simple as that. $ Writer TJ Jorgensen has been a professional Blackjack player for over 25 years. He is well known for his tournament play and has beaten some of the top tournament players in the world. He has also won the World Series Of Blackjack. His newest book “How To Become A Blackjack Jedi” is available online at Amazon.com.

Poker Players Worldwide Invited to Enter Tournament, Enjoy Luxury Property this July

T

alking Stick Resort is thrilled to invite poker players and fans back this July 812, for the 16th annual Arizona State Poker Championship. The five-day tournament, which was placed on hold for two years as a result of the pandemic, is known for its high energy, talented players, and an estimated $1 million prize pool.

20 Arizona Gaming Guide | July 2022 | azgamingguide.com

The tournament attracts some of the best players from around the world, who descend on Arizona to play in Talking Stick Resort’s ARENA Poker Room, the Valley’s largest poker room. The ARENA Poker Room offers players a non-smoking environment with 47 tables, surrounded by 16 big-screen TVs, plus special food and beverage menus served around-the-clock. “Out of all the games and tournaments we host, the Arizona State Poker Championship is easily the most exciting,” said Mr. Ramon Martinez, Director of Public Relations at Talking Stick Resort. “The staff and I get such a thrill out of hosting poker tournaments and especially love getting to know all the players! So many of them have big, colorful personalities and a mesmerizing poker play,” he added. In 2019, the tournament broke an Arizona State Poker Championship’s record with 1,800 seats sold. By day two of the tournament, alternates were no longer accepted, and The ARENA Poker Room had reached full capacity. This year is expected to receive a comparable turnout, as poker players test their hand in the hopes of winning a share of the million-dollar prize pool. During the 2019 showdown full of twists and surprise plays that ensued for nearly six hours and amassed a large boisterous crowd, Arizona native Albert Calderon was named the Arizona State Poker Champion, securing the victory with a winning hand of king-high. In addition to bragging rights, the 32-yearold won $237,000, a trophy and a Rolex. Second place and third place winners were also rewarded for their performance, receiving trophies and payouts of $183,420 and $133,200 respectively. While the final table of 10 players received the highest payout amounts in the tournament’s history, the last 180 players were paid out.

“The 2019 Arizona Poker Championship was an exciting tournament,” said Martinez. “But this year will be even more special as we welcome players back for in-person competition, many of whom, I imagine, have been honing their skills during the pandemic through virtual reality and online poker games.” Talking Stick Resort is a AAA Four Diamond Rated Resort and leading entertainment destination. In addition to the luxury accommodations, poker players who come to play in the Arizona State Poker Championship can revel in state-of-the-art amenities. Enjoy a culinary experience at myriad onsite restaurants, soothing spa treatments, a relaxing dip in one of the resort’s three pools, and a fun escape at the emerging Talking Stick Cultural and Entertainment Destination, which includes TopGolf, Talking Stick Golf Club, OdySea Aquarium, Butterfly Wonderland, Pangaea Land of the Dinosaurs, iFly, Octane Raceway, Mavrix, Velocity VR and Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament. “When you look at all we offer—from our restaurants and nonstop gaming action to our luxury accommodations, spa services, resort pools, and entertainment options—poker players can turn their poker championship trip into a full vacation,” said Martinez. This year’s Arizona State Poker Championship buy-in is $1,100, including the service fee, and players will start with $16,000 in tournament chips. Players can opt to purchase $10,000 in bonus tournament chips for $30. Re-entries and late entries will be allowed until the end of the first break on the first day of the tournament. Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino, Arizona’s first and only tribal casino to have an international management partner, unveiled a new Dealer School Program. Arizona Sets Record Event Wagering Handle In March

Walk-In Urgent Mental Health Clinic MIND 24-7 Opens Third Location

Event wagering levels skyrocketed in March, resulting in an approximate 40% increase in handle when compared to the February handle, according to a new report by the Arizona Department of Gaming. “March was an exciting month for Arizona event wagering, with major sporting events like NCAA’s March Madness helping set a single month event wagering handle record,” said Ted Vogt, Director, ADG. “I look forward to seeing how the industry continues to develop as we finish out the first year of legal event wagering in the coming months.”

MIND 24-7, headquartered in Scottsdale, opened its third facility at the beginning of June in the Metrocenter area near Dunlap Avenue and I-17. MIND 24-7 CEO Jeff Spight (above) performed the ribbon cutting and told the attendees they are fundamentally changing the landscape of accessible behavioral health by offering walk-in urgent mental health and substance abuse services such as Psych Express Care, Psych Crisis Care, and Psych Progressions. MIND 24-7 fills the gap for those seeking help by being available right when they need it—24 hours a day, 365 days a year, without an appointment.

Event wagering operators accepted over $690 million in wagers during the month, resulting in approximately $1.7 million in privilege fees being contributed to the state. You can view the full reports on the ADG website at Gaming.AZ.Gov. Established by the Arizona State Legislature in 1995, ADG is the state regulatory agency for tribal gaming, racing and parimutuel/simulcast wagering, event wagering/fantasy sports and unarmed combat sports. ADG also provides and supports education, prevention and treatment programs for people and families affected by problem gambling through its Division of Problem Gambling and 24-hour confidential helpline, 1.800.NEXT.STEP.

MIND 24-7 CEO Jeff Spight also shared they have expanded from 8 people to 600 over the course of the previous 13 months, are able to have a first responder meet with a mental health provider in less than 4 minutes from them walking through their doors, are able to have a member of the community see a mental health provider in less than 18 minutes, are anticipating opening a location on the West side of the Valley, and are also anticipating opening another location (their fifth) in Tucson by the end of this year.

Christopher Boan, Analyst for BetArizona.com commented on the March report, “Arizona’s sports betting marketplace showed its potential in March, with the state’s first-ever $600M handle. The strong performance of the Arizona Wildcats, along with the state’s longstanding support of men’s and women’s basketball on the collegiate level and the return of Cactus League baseball created a perfect storm for sports betting in Arizona.” Additional analysis and insights on the March report is available at BetArizona.com. $

“I am amazed watching the community embrace us and watching us in action saving lives,” said Kristi Stovall, VP of Marketing & Communications for MIND 24-7. “I’ve seen parents break down in appreciation because they can come to us and have a place to take their child when there is nowhere else to go to get immediate mental health help,” Stovall added. MIND 24-7 has locations at 10046 N. Metro Pkwy. in Phoenix (currently for youth only), 2728 N. 24th St. in Phoenix (youth only), and 1138 S. Higley Rd. in Mesa (youth & adults). AGS Issues Statement On Supreme Court Ruling In Favor Of Authorized Gambling On Tribal Lands In Texas

Slot machine manufacturer AGS CEO David Lopez issued the following statement after the announcement of the United States Supreme Court decision siding with certain Tribes in Texas (the Tribes at issue are the Ysleta del Sur and Alabama and Coushatta Indian Tribes of Texas, which operate the Speaking Rock and Naskila Gaming facilities, respectively) to allow bingo gaming on their Tribal lands, without regulatory oversight from the State of Texas. The Court’s ruling on Wednesday determined that these Texas Tribes have the autonomy to regulate electronic bingo games on their lands, in compliance with the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act like most other Tribes in America, regardless of the state’s rules on bingo, which is permitted in the State of Texas. While the federal government agreed with the Tribes’ position, the State of Texas did not. “After an extremely long process in the judicial system, I would like to congratulate our Native American business partners and friends on their well-deserved win. This ruling makes it possible for these sovereign Tribes to gain economic freedom and confirms their rights as federally recognized Tribes. AGS stands by our Tribal operator partners as they look to exercise their rights and wish them success in current and future ventures as sovereign Tribes in the State of Texas. We are proud to support all our Native American partners throughout the country and, in particular, these Tribes that have fought so hard and so long in pursuit of their economic freedom.” AGS is a global company focused on creating a diverse mix of entertaining gaming experiences for every kind of player including Class II & III slot products, table games, and other operator solutions. SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

LUCKY HABITS OF AMERICANS Many Of You Abide By Superstitions...“Just In Case”

W

hether it’s a habit, tradition, or charm—it seems just about everyone has something they do for a little extra luck when it comes to gambling and playing the lottery. A new study found more than half of Americans believe in luck. Of those who do not, 30% say they still abide by superstitions “just in case.” Top lucky beliefs among Americans include beginner’s luck, wishing on a shooting star, throwing a coin into a fountain. 41% say lucky habits are outfit-related, 37% say they’re routine-related. 6 in 10 believe in lucky numbers.

Sometimes just a certain color can help someone’s luck; and colors such as black, blue, green, and gray are among the most common lucky colors. If it’s not a lucky color, maybe it’s a lucky day of the week. Friday and Saturday are believed to be the two most lucky days of the week.

We all need a little luck here and there, whether you’re playing at a casino or hoping to ace a job interview. Sometimes we rely on a lucky piece of clothing to help make a decision, or we keep a lucky item in our pocket in the hope it brings us good luck. For some, their luck may depend on a certain number or what’s in their daily horoscope. A new survey asked more than 1,200 Americans to better understand their views on “luck” and what habits they may follow to try and ensure that good fortune.

LUCK AND SPORTS Some people take their sports-watching habits very seriously, especially if they believe wearing a certain shirt will help their team win. More than 1 in 10 report having superstitions surrounding their sports teams and how they watch games. Of those with sports superstitions, 41% said those superstitions are outfit-related, 37% said they’re routine-related, 16% said they’re location-related, and 6% said they’re food-related.

AMERICANS AND THEIR LUCKY HABITS More than two-thirds of the people surveyed (68%) said they believe in the concept of “luck.” While there are dozens of different common lucky beliefs, some of the most popular among respondents included beginner’s luck, wishing on a shooting star, and throwing coins into a fountain.

CLOTHING AND ITEMS It’s not uncommon for people to have a lucky item or accessory. The most common item believed to be lucky? Jewelry.

But just because someone doesn’t believe in luck doesn’t mean they don’t follow certain habits or superstitions. 31% of people who said they don’t believe in luck admit to still abiding by lucky beliefs “just in case.” Other commonly held lucky beliefs include picking up pennies, crossing fingers, and knocking on wood to prevent bad luck. ASTROLOGY, LUCKY ITEMS AND GUT INSTINCTS For some people, astrology is everything. A quarter of the people surveyed said they believe in their horoscope, with nearly 1 in 10 saying they make decisions based solely on what that horoscope says. Although over half the people surveyed said they blame bad luck when bad things happen, 8% said they place that blame on Mercury in retrograde. While bad things can be blamed on a full moon or karma, good things could be blamed on items such as a four leaf clover. Four leaf clovers are historically known for being lucky items, and 62% of people said they’ve spent time looking for these little plants.

34 Arizona Gaming Guide | July 2022 | azgamingguide.com

There are also those who just trust their gut instincts, 88% of people said that they believe in those gut hunches and 89% said they make decisions based on those instincts.

50% of those with lucky items or accessories said they wear or hold that item whenever they need to make a big decision or have a big event (or maybe they’re at a casino playing the slots). Some of the most common situations where good luck is needed include a job interview, a first date, an important day at work, or a sporting event. LUCKY NUMBERS Don’t forget about lucky numbers! Many people, especially those who pick lottery numbers, rely on those lucky numbers for good luck. 60% of the people surveyed said they believe in lucky numbers, and some of the most common lucky numbers include 7, 11, 22, 33, 4, 13, and 9. 38% of the people surveyed said they regularly buy lottery tickets, and 35% said they use their lucky numbers to pick those lottery numbers. Are they consistent in picking lottery numbers? Almost half (47%) said they are and play their lucky numbers every time they buy a lottery ticket. In addition to repeatedly playing their same lucky numbers, 7% said they only buy lottery tickets from one specific store! $ (Source: https://www.paysbig.com/blog/lucky-habits-of-americans)

A gambler walks into a butcher shop and starts eying their selection. Noticing the very short clerk, the gambler says, “Excuse me, I’ll bet you $500 you can’t get me those meats on the top shelf of the freezer!” The clerk responds, “Sorry, I can’t take that bet. Those steaks are too high!” Four horse racing buddies are at the track when one of them speaks up, “I just can’t seem to win on anything today! Don’t you have any tips for me on this last race?” The other three immediately start looking through the program and come back with one name, “Lightning, put it all on Lightning. That horse has great breeding and comes from a long line of winning horses.” The last race is set, all the horses are in the gate, the starter gets ready and then lets them loose. Lightning is first out of the gate and takes several big powerful strides down the track. But then, much to everyone’s dismay, Lightning abruptly stops, turns around, returns to the gate and closes the doors. Lighting brings up the rear as the race ends. The three buddies turn to their friend and try to explain what happened, “Well, we did tell you Lightning had good breeding. Just look at those manners!”
