"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.

"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp

“I am doing all things through God who strengthens me. The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called Failure, a loop called Confusion, speed bumps called Friends, red lights called Enemies, caution lights called Family. You will have flats called Jobs. But, if you have a spare called Determination, an engine called Perseverance, insurance called Faith, a driver called God, you will make it to a place called Success.” ~Author Unknown Welcome to our seven-year anniversary issue. A special thanks to God, our advertisers, staff, contributors, community partners and you, our readers, for making this magazine possible.
Leviticus 19:13 Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning.
I believe God has blessed everyone equally, although, in giving us free will, one’s choice of path can lead to either great accomplishments or strong disappointments. Here at Arizona Health & Living we choose to follow God’s plan. We don’t envy or chase what others are doing, let each run their own race. We carry through our ideas, led by faith and do all with grace.
Psalm 112:5 A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.
We will continue to follow His plan without fear, and humble ourselves unto all, to do the best we can in relaying information for everyone to live healthier lives. Here are a few bible verses to encourage you to plant seeds of greatness: Matthew 17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Deuteronomy 8:18 But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Proverbs 13:11 Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase. Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
Proverbs 16:8 Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues without right. Proverbs 19:17 He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again. Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. James 2:26 Faith without works is dead Mark 8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? We at Great Central Sun Media Group, home of Arizona Health & Living Magazine, are very grateful! I give praise to you God for another amazing year! Thank you! Until next time,
God Bless You for Your Support! Here to serve,

Back-to-School Made Simple Local education store a staple in the Valley
Summer has flown by and it’s almost time for kids to go back to school. This time of year can often be stressful for teachers and parents, but thanks to one local business, it’s easy to get ready and excited for the upcoming school year. Teaching & Learning Stuff has been a staple in the Valley since opening its doors in 1993. The stores provide customers with access to the best educational supplies, materials, products and more. After teaching in the Valley for more than 10 years, Theresa Bundgaard was given the opportunity to purchase the business from her in-laws and stay in a field that she was passionate about. She changed the name from Teaching Stuff to Teaching & Learning Stuff to cater to more than just teachers. “Over the years, we’ve become known as a ‘teacher store,’ but it’s way more than that,” says Bundgaard. “We cater to anyone who has a child in their life and enjoys seeing their child grow and learn.”
with goodies that they can hand out to their teachers to get their first year underway with excitement. In addition, during the holidays, Teaching & Learning Stuff participates in the Angel Tree program, where they donate gifts to kids in need. The stores also facilitate back-to-school drives to help supply children, teachers, and schools with everything they need.
Teaching & Learning Stuff outfits teachers and parents with every possible tool they could want to make teaching enjoyable for kids. With two kids of her own, Bundgaard knows the importance of quality learning and how it should extend beyond the classroom.
Later this year, Teaching & Learning Stuff will launch a brand new service called “Build-A-Class-Kit,” where teachers create their classroom supply list online and parents can order the kit and have it delivered free of charge to their child’s classroom before the first day of school.
In addition to selling educational supplies and products, Teaching & Learning Stuff offers classroom management training at schools. The professional development in-service is taught by Bundgaard and covers three specific categories: crowd control, classroom community and paperwork. The affordable workshop is available for an entire campus to prepare for the upcoming school year.
“No more lugging your children’s supplies through the parking lot in the summer heat on meet the teacher night,” says Bundgaard. “It’s all about convenience.”
Albert Einstein once said that “education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” Learning is meant to be fun and exciting, and that is exactly what Teaching & Learning Stuff is all about.
The first Teaching & Learning Stuff location opened in Glendale in 1993. Since then, Bundgaard and her team have opened two more locations in Phoenix and Mesa. This summer they opened their fourth location in the Flagstaff mall, providing learning materials to northern Arizona educators and families just in time for back to school. Bundgaard continues to look for opportunities to grow the business.
The business is dedicated to giving back to the community and making education a priority in Arizona. Every year they provide school districts with new teacher bags filled 14 August 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

Touchstone Health Services
Partnering with the community to deliver a range of health, education and social services With five locations in Arizona, Touchstone Health Services partners with individuals, families, schools and other service providers to deliver the optimal continuum of health, education and social services. The emphasis of these services is to support individuals and families so they can acquire the skills they need to lead productive and responsible lives. “Touchstone offers various services to families with children from birth to 17 years old. These services are broken up into three different categories: birth to age 6; ages 7 to 17; and prevention,” explains Damien Johnson, Communications and Public Relations Coordinator for Touchstone. One of the several services they provide in the birth to 6 years old programs is the Infant and Early Childhood Program (IECP). “Our team begins with a comprehensive developmental, history and trauma assessment to identify the appropriate interventions. The IECP program works with the Arizona Department of Child Safety to achieve permanency for the children being served. The team works closely with both the foster families to prevent foster home disruption and with the biological families when reunification is the goal,” Johnson says. One of the many services provided to youth, particularly ages 11-17, is the Multisystemic Therapy (MST). MST is an intensive evidence-based family therapy program that has been proven effective in treating youth with serious acting out behaviors, says Johnson. MST helps empower parents and caregivers with skills and resources needed to independently address challenging behaviors. “Touchstone Health Services is the only organization in the state that provides MST,” Johnson adds.
Touchstone Health Services’ prevention team serves communities and schools with several grant-funded programs. One in particular is the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program (TPPP). TPPP is funded by the Office of Adolescent Health, Department of Health and Human Services, and addresses the growing need for awareness and education on teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. The TPPP goal is to reach more than 2,500 youth per year with an evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention curriculum. “This prevention program services the Maryvale community of Phoenix and the cities of Tolleson and Avondale,” Johnson says. “TPPP also facilitates the Community Alliance for Resources and Education (CARE) Coalition. The CARE Coalition’s purpose is to improve adolescent health in the West Valley, engage in a comprehensive community awareness campaign, and offer an evidence-based parenting program to serve parents of teenagers.” This year the organization extended the evidence-based therapy Multisystemic Therapy for Problem Sexual Behaviors (MST-PSB) in its Tucson clinic. This therapy was clinically adapted from the MST model to address youth from ages 10 through 17 who have problematic sexual behaviors. MSTPSB relies heavily on family therapy as a mechanism of change for the youth and family. “Another service offered through Touchstone that we would like to highlight is our Family-Centered Autism Program (FCAP). FCAP provides integrated services to youth who are on the autism spectrum and to their family members. We utilize evidence-based interventions such as

Applied Behavioral Analysis, Positive Behavioral Support and Pivotal Response Therapy to assist the child and family to improve behavior and family functioning,” Johnson notes. Touchstone Health Services Prevention Program was recently awarded monies from The Arizona Parents Commission on Drug Education and Prevention Grant Program. This program will target youth (ages 10-19) and adults caring for youth in Southwest Phoenix, which includes Avondale, Tolleson and Goodyear.
The organization also provides a yearly Childhood Trauma Conference for professionals within the industry to receive continuing education and discuss current topics and trends with dozens of guest speakers. “Touchstone Health Services gives back to the community through various events hosted by our prevention programs,” Johnson says. “Touchstone ensures the most appropriate and up-to-date services are provided to the community members in need.”

UHCCF Seeks Grant Applications from Local Families

Managing Pre-diabetes or Diabetes Diabetes and its precursor is a major problem, both in the United States and across the globe. In 2015, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that nearly 50 percent of adults living in the United States have diabetes or prediabetes, a condition marked by higher than normal blood glucose levels that are not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization reports that the global prevalence of diabetes figures to rise from 8 percent in 2011 to 10 percent by 2030. Preventing diabetes should be a priority for men, women and children, but management must take precedence for the millions of people who have already been diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes. According to the American Heart Association, making healthy food choices is an essential step in preventing or managing diabetes. Making those choices can be difficult for those people who have never before paid much attention to their diets, but the AHA offers the following advice to people dealing with pre-diabetes or diabetes.
Limit foods that may worsen your condition. Some foods, including fiber-rich whole grains and fish like salmon that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, can help people with pre-diabetes or diabetes. But many more foods must be limited, if not largely ignored. Limit your consumption of sweets and added sugars, which can be found in soda, candy, cakes and jellies. It's also good to limit your sodium intake and resist fatty meats like beef and pork. Document your eating habits. The AHA recommends that people with pre-diabetes or diabetes maintain a food log to see how certain foods affect their blood glucose levels. Within 60 to 90 minutes of eating, check your blood glucose levels to see how your body reacts to the foods you eat. As your food log becomes more extensive, you will begin to see which foods match up well with your body and which foods you may want to avoid. Plan your meals. Hectic schedules have derailed many a healthy lifestyle, but people who have been diagnosed 26 August 2016 | azhealthandliving.com
with pre-diabetes or diabetes do not have the luxury of straying from healthy diets. Plan your meals in advance so your eating schedule is not erratic and your diet includes the right foods, and not just the most convenient foods. Bring lunch and a healthy snack to work with you each day rather than relying on fast food or other potentially unhealthy options in the vicinity of your office.
Embrace alternative ingredients. Upon being diagnosed with pre-diabetes or diabetes, many people assume they must abandon their favorite foods. But that's not necessarily true. Many dishes can be prepared with alternative ingredients that are diabetes-friendly. In fact, the AHA has compiled a collection of diabetesfriendly recipes that can be accessed by visiting www.heart.org. A pre-diabetes or diabetes diagnosis requires change, but these conditions can be managed without negatively affecting patients' quality of life.
Robotic Surgery Can Be Advantageous By MS, Photo Š2016 Intuitive Surgical, Inc.
Certain illnesses or injuries require surgery to correct the problem or prevent further damage. Surgery is not something many people would volunteer for, but it can be a necessity in certain instances. Patients may have many questions when they learn that surgery is on the horizon. Robotic surgery in particular may raise patients' eyebrows. Robotic surgery is a relatively recent development. According to Dr. Johnny Serrano of Precision Surgery Inc., robotic surgery is an advanced form of minimally invasive or laparoscopic (small incision) surgery. Compared to open surgeries, robotic surgery offers many benefits to patients, some of which include minimal scarring, reduced blood loss, faster recovery time, reduced risk of infection, reduced pain and discomfort, possibly shorter hospitalization and faster recovery time. Robotic surgery works similarly to traditional surgery, but instead of the surgeon working manually, robotic arms take over. During robotic surgery, typically three robotic arms are inserted into the patient through small incisions. One arm is a camera and the other two serve as the surgeon's "hands." In some instances, a fourth arm is used to clear away any obstructions. Surgeons will perform the procedure using a computer-controlled console. Robotic surgery does not mean that a robot is taking the place of a surgeon. Rather, robotic surgery combines the skills and knowledge of surgeons with advancements in technology in an effort to improve surgical procedures. Many surgeons prefer robotic surgery because of its precision and the superior visualization of the surgical field that the procedure provides. It's also easier to account for tremors in the hands, and the machinery enables greater maneuverability.
How robotic surgery works The surgeon will work from a computer console in the operating room, controlling the miniaturized instruments mounted on the robotic arms. He or she looks through a 3D camera attached to another robotic arm, which magnifies the surgical site. The surgeon's hand, wrist, and finger movements will be transmitted through the computer console to the instruments attached to the robot's arms. The mimicked movements have the same range of motion as the surgeon, allowing for maximum control. While the surgeon is working, the surgical team will supervise the robot at the patient's bedside.
Men, women, and children can benefit from robotic surgery, which has become especially helpful for gynecologic conditions. Robotic surgery has been used in the treatment of cancers of the abdomen, as well as pelvic masses, fibroids, tumors and tubal ligations. Robotic surgery also can be used for pelvic reconstruction surgeries and to treat incontinence and organ prolapse. Although the success rates of traditional surgery versus robotic surgery have been relatively similar, many people are now leaning toward robotic surgery because of its advantages - and seeking doctors and hospitals trained in robotic surgery. azhealthandliving.com |August 2016

Coffee & Colon Health Coffee compels many people to rise out of bed every morning. While individuals have many reasons to drink caffeinated beverages, the most notable is often the pep such beverages provide. But coffee, tea and other caffeinated beverages actually may provide additional benefits, including helping to fend off disease, including colorectal cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that, in the United States, more than 95,000 new cases of colon cancer and 39,000 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in 2016. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in men and women. However, coffee may help reduce instances of colon cancer. A study titled "Coffee Consumption and the Risk of Colorectal Cancer," which was published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, found that regular coffee consumption inversely correlates to colorectal cancer risk. Coffee has been identified as a protective agent against colorectal cancer, as several of its components affect the physiology of the colon and can make cancerous cells less likely to take root there. The Journal of the National Cancer Institute also substantiates these claims. Frequent coffee consumption has been associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer in a number of case-control studies - for both men and women. Drinking coffee may not only help keep cancer at bay, it may boost the survival rate from colon cancer, too. Information from a study published in The Journal of Clinical Oncology stated that colon cancer patients who are heavy coffee drinkers have a far lower risk of dying or having their cancer return than those who do not drink coffee. Significant benefits start at two to three cups per day. People who consumed four cups of caffeinated coffee or more a day had half the rate of recurrence or death than non-coffee drinkers. Other data indicates caffeine alone may not be behind the reduced cancer risks and rates - it may be the coffee itself. Researchers at the University Of Southern California Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center Of Keck Medicine 28 August 2016 | azhealthandliving.com
found that decreased colorectal risk was seen across all types of coffee, both caffeinated and decaffeinated. According to Dr. Stephen Gruber, the author of the study, coffee contains many elements that contribute to overall colorectal health, which may explain coffee's preventive properties. Caffeine and polyphenol can act as antioxidants, limiting the growth of potential colon cancer cells. Melanoidins generated during the roasting process have been thought to encourage colon mobility, and diterpenes may prevent cancer by enhancing the body's defense against oxidative damage. Although data continues to suggest that coffee can help reduce colorectal cancer risk and survival rates, additional information is still needed before doctors can start recommending coffee consumption as a preventative measure.
How Music May Improve Health
By MS
While many people love music for its entertainment value, there is growing evidence that music can be good for overall health as well. In a study titled, "The effect of music intervention in stress response to cardiac surgery in a randomized clinical trial," a team of Swedish researchers measured serum cortisol, heart rate, respiratory rate, mean arterial pressure, arterial oxygen tension, arterial oxygen saturation, and subjective pain and anxiety levels for patients who had undergone cardiothoracic surgery. Those who were allowed to listen to music during recuperation and bed rest had lower cortisol levels than those who rested without music. According to Caring Voice Coalition, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of patients with chronic illnesses, music has also been shown to enhance memory and stimulate both sides of the brain, which may help individuals recover from stroke or those suffering from cognitive impairments. Music also can have a positive impact on mood. Neuroscientists have discovered that listening to music heightens positive emotions through the reward centers of the brain. Music stimulates the production of dopamine, creating positive feelings as a result. Some researchers think that music may help improve immune response, promoting faster recovery from illness. Undergraduate students at Wilkes University measured the levels of IgA - an important antibody for the immune system's first line of defense against disease - from saliva. Levels were measured before and after 30 minutes of exposure to various sounds, including music. Soothing music produced significantly greater increases in IgA than any of the other conditions. Another way music has been linked to improved health is its ability to make physical activity seem less mundane. Listening to songs can distract one from the task at hand, pushing focus onto the music rather than the hard work being done. When exercising, upbeat music can help a person go a little further as they work to achieve their fitness goals than working out without music. azhealthandliving.com |August 2016

Take a Cue from Successful Women Women had another successful year in 2015. According to the Fortune 500 list, 2015 tied the record set for the highest number of female CEOs in America's largest companies by revenue. Although women make up 45 percent of the labor force and only 5 percent head Fortune 500 companies, women are making greater strides than ever before. For example, in 1998, just one woman led a Fortune 500 company, according to Pew Research Center. Certain traits could help propel successful women to the top. Here's a look at some of the ways female professionals can overcome professional hurdles and make their mark.
Be passionate about what you do. Women who maintain passion about their careers are more likely to overcome any challenges and stand out in the workplace. If your profession is not stoking any passion, explore alternate career opportunities.
Recognize your strengths. Today's professionals are less likely than their predecessors to stick with one company or line of work for their entire working lives. But just because you change jobs or career paths does not mean your past experience is useless. Successful women know what they do best, whether it's public speaking, writing or making sales pitches. Apply those strengths when looking for a new job or career.
Know when to ask for help. Even the most accomplished women have limitations. Asking for help when you need it can help you overcome those limitations. To be good at what you do, you first have to learn from others. Sometimes the smartest way to overcome an obstacle is having several hands on deck to provide a boost. Thinking that the work is better left to you alone could be a mistake. Enlist help when you need it and never hesitate to ask for another perspective. Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth 30 August 2016| azhealthandliving.com
and learning. Without it, brains can't absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.
Go easy on yourself. While many successful people strive for perfection, achieving perfection is unlikely, if not impossible. Successful people often admit to being their own worst critics, but don't beat yourself up if you endure some trial and error. Mistakes can be a great teacher, so use any you make to your advantage.
Don't be afraid to take risks. Successful women are not afraid to take risks. Many may have decided they don't fit a specific mold and want to affect change. However, calculated risks are different from reckless decisions, and it is important to recognize the difference. A calculated risk may involve starting your own business after learning the ropes in a specific field and testing the waters. Reckless behavior would be opening that business with no relevant experience.
Steps to Achieve a Better Work-Life Balance
By MS
Many people face the challenge of balancing work and family. Workloads may be hefty on both fronts, and the pursuit of a healthy balance between home and career may seem like an unattainable goal. Stress can build from feelings of being pulled in too many directions. According to Mental Health America, stress can compromise a person's ability to concentrate, lead to feelings of irritability or depression, negatively affect personal relationships, and weaken immune systems, increasing a person's susceptibility to a variety of ailments. Living a fulfilling life often involves finding the right work-life balance, and the following tips can help make that possible.
Establish your priorities. Make a list of the things that are most important to you. Having this list put on paper can make goals more attainable. Think about the main things that you want to focus on in life and go from there.
Learn to manage your time. One of the keys to creating a
work-life balance is to hone your time management skills. Effective time management can help you fit more in without feeling rushed or anxious. Start by determining just how much time you need to perform certain tasks. Then divide the day accordingly. You may find that by waking up an hour earlier each day, you achieve a lot more without affecting your wellbeing.
Don't procrastinate. Stick to your schedule so you don't feel
stressed and as if you are constantly rushing around. Complete one item before you move on to the next.
Unplug at home. When spending time at home with your
loved ones, disconnect from your devices, especially those that connect you to work. Making yourself too available for work can be a detriment to your health and family.
Divide your responsibilities. Allow family members to tackle some chores or other household duties so it will free up more time to spend together.
Schedule a mental break each day. Give yourself time to perform one activity per day that you really enjoy. This will help you recharge and manage stress even further.

Q. I need hemorrhoid surgery, but my friends and family have frightened me from proceeding with surgery. Is there anything besides traditional excisional surgery? A. Hemorrhoids are the result of excessive blood flow and larger diameter vessels that feed the normal arterial anal hemorrhoidal cushions. This can result in symptoms such as bleeding, pain, discomfort, swelling and prolapse (protruding of hemorrhoid tissue). Hemorrhoids will occur in 50 percent of the population by the age of 50. Eighty-five percent of the population will experience hemorrhoid symptoms in their lifetime. Most definitive procedures being done involve some form of excisional therapy. Today a non-excisional definitive surgical treatment is available called Transanal Hemorrhoidal Dearterialization (THD). THD uses ultrasound to locate the hemorrhoidal arteries so that they may be ligated. The surgeon will then repair any prolapsed tissue if present, again using only suture. No tissue is cut or excised. THD is performed as an outpatient surgery and most patients will return to normal activities within four days. THD eliminates the most dreaded complications of hemorrhoid surgery such as anal stenosis and anal sphincter damage, which can lead to incontinence (loss of bowel control). Since THD is excision-less, and uses only sutures for repair, a patient’s pain is much less, recuperation is faster and healing is much quicker. Stop feeling embarrassed and stop feeling afraid. Get the procedure you need and get your life back.

Q. How can I tell if my child’s vision is affecting their learning?
Q. When is snoring more than just a minor annoyance?
A. This fall is a good time to evaluate if
A. Our country is sleep-deprived—desperate
Not all children with learning difficulties have vision problems but 20 percent of all children have difficulty in learning because their visual system is not functioning properly. Many are misdiagnosed as having a learning disability or ADD. Many of the children with learning related visual difficulties pass vision screenings at school or at the pediatrician. Many of them actually see 20/20 but still have vision related issues.
Millions are disturbed throughout the night by sleep-disordered breathing caused by airway obstruction. Sleep-disordered breathing is a serious health problem, and initially appears as snoring. Although snoring is generally viewed as a minor annoyance, it can be the first sign of a problem with a range of severity.
your child is having vision issues that may be affecting their learning. Does your child find reading difficult? Does your child get frustrated when reading? Does your child easily quit or give up when attempting to read? Answering yes to any of these questions means there is a possibility that your child has a visually related learning problem.
Eye charts test visual acuity; can you see it or not. Best functioning vision is so much more than just having the ability to see 20/20. It involves how the eyes adjust focus from near to far or far to near and how the eyes process what they are seeing. Individuals can sometimes have serious visual problems and yet still see 20/20. Some of the symptoms a child experiences can be some of the following: headache when reading, words slide together when reading, loses place when reading, and giving up easily when reading. If you child has any of these symptoms, schedule them to see an eye doctor.
for restful nights, to awaken easily, and be functional throughout the day without needing a nap. The anxiety and stress of our busy world certainly make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. However, those dreams of being rested are even more difficult to achieve when nights are fraught with the tossing, turning, snoring, choking, or gasping for breath of oneself or a bed partner.
Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) is marked by a greater loss of airway patency than snoring. Those who suffer from UARS are generally young, female and may experience gastroesophageal reflux disorder, asthma, depression and hormonal imbalances. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a serious and often life-threatening problem when sleepers stop breathing for 10 seconds or more (apnea), or breathe at a decreased rate and depth (hypopnea). Choking, gasping for breath, and long periods without breathing are all signs of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Snoring, UARS, and OSA are all serious conditions that should not be ignored. Not only do they affect sleep, they are detrimental to an individual’s health.

low back pain are related to degenerative change of the spinal discs, which is usually considered part of the aging process. The degenerative change of spinal discs can affect the spine under three different phases. In the first phase, the spinal disc loses water content due to restricted movement between two vertebral bones. When movement or range of motion decreases, decreased size or atrophy of the spinal disc may happen due to abnormal movement. This appears as a “thinning disc” seen on the MRI. Mild pain will often be felt around the middle and lower back in this phase. In the second phase, the “thinning disc” continues to wear out if care is not provided in time. The disc is getting weaker and there is a potential that the inside contents of the disc—the gel like water content— might bulge out, which increase the pain intensity of the back with radiated sensations felt in legs and arms based on the affected areas (neck or low back). In the third phase, if proper care is not given following second phase, the body starts the self protecting mechanism, meaning that bone spurs start to generate. Serious pain occurs in this phase, which is commonly known as arthritis.

Q. What Is truSculpt? A. truSculpt is an innovative and non-surgical way to comfortably reshape your body. It can help eliminate the appearance of loose skin and cellulite on many areas of the body, including the thighs, buttocks (if qualified) and abdomen. Benefits of this treatment include: · Non-surgical and non-invasive · Safe and FDA approved · Helps to tighten areas of the body with loose skin · Reduces the appearance of cellulite · Noticeable results in just 2 to 4 treatments · No downtime · For use on all skin types · Combines with Tickle Liposuction to improve skin quality and contour areas of unwanted, stubborn fat
How does truSculpt work? truSculpt uses warming radiofrequency energy to heat up the deeper layers of skin to reduce fat and the appearance of cellulite. You only need 2 to 4 truSculpt sessions before you start noticing a slimmer and smoother body. truSculpt is clinically proven to transmit heat across all body areas. As part of truSculpt, advanced features have been added including a monitoring system that lets us know the temperature and a feedback system that the required temperature is achieved for a minimum of 5 minutes for each section of skin being treated. With this technology, and the supervision of our certified laser technician, the patient experiences heat that is tolerable. It is normal for treated areas to be red, but the redness subsides in a matter of hours. The large hand piece is used to cover, and treat, larger zones of the body. For smaller treatment areas, such as the jowls and neck, truSculpt features a small hand piece.

Q. Is it necessary to go in for a dental cleaning every 6 months? A. It’s important to keep regular dental visits for the maintenance of your healthy teeth and gums. Just like regular doctor’s visits to check up on how your body is doing, regular dental visits make sure your teeth and gums are being maintained for the long run. Everyone knows how important it is to brush and floss, but regular dental visits offer a more intensive cleaning and can spot any problem areas before they turn into bigger issues. A regular checkup isn’t just about checking for cavities, your dentist or hygienist will also evaluate the health of your gums, and examine your mouth for any indications of oral cancer, diabetes or vitamin deficiencies. Don’t be surprised if your dentist also examines your face, bite, saliva and movement of your lower jaw joints (TMJs). Of course this appointment should also include a cleaning and maybe a lesson or two about how to improve the health of your teeth and gums. Special attention will be paid to any plaque and tartar because build-up can occur quickly if you’re not keeping a good oral hygiene routine. Certain food, beverages and tobacco can stain teeth your teeth and if it isn’t removed then it can harden your teeth and cause irritated gum tissue that can lead to gum disease. Stay on top of your daily oral hygiene routine and make sure to stick with a 6-month dental cleaning program!

the bandwagon. There are three key factors in choosing an injector: What is the experience, training and talent of the individual? Is there an on-site medical doctor? And, what is the price?
Before your appointment, do your homework about the facility and the individual. Do they offer a free consultation? How long has the person been injecting and what is their medical or aesthetic training? Do they seek out advanced training? What other services do they provide (how much time is spent injecting)? The answers will help to gauge their proficiency in the art of injecting and ensure you get the results you want. If a physician isn't doing the injections, ensure the individual is an R.N. working under the direct supervision of an on-site M.D. As more non-aesthetic/dermatologist facilities offer injectables, there has been a rise in serious complications. You want to choose someone with the proper medical training and experience to deal with the rare but real risks of complications. Price is often a driver for selecting a provider but should only be a part of your decision. Price is a combination of the cost of the product plus the experience and skill of the injector. An extremely low price should be a red flag of either counterfeit or low-quality products or a newbie to the field that is trying to build a client base.

Q. What could be the cause of changed behavior in myself or my loved ones this summer? A. After 20 years in the non-medical home care business, we have noticed certain patterns develop seasonally. During the warm summer months, one of them is a predominance of urinary tract infections (UTIs). This ailment affects both men and women and it increases as the heat rises and the body needs better hydration. It really does not matter how much time you spend outside in the summer. Our bodies still need plenty of water. When temperatures soar, increased perspiration means an increased need for fluids. If you do not drink enough water you will become dehydrated and there is a good possibility you will develop a UTI. One of the side effects of a UTI is a change in behavior. A person can experience elevated anger/agitation, confusion, listlessness, a loss of appetite, depression and, at its worst, hallucinations. If you notice any of these signs, you may want to schedule a visit with your doctor. If you are referred to the emergency room, they will hydrate you, give you antibiotics and you will notice a difference very quickly. Every summer about 30 percent of our clients experience this common illness. We encourage everyone to watch for the warning signs. We would also like to encourage everyone to reach out to those in need, especially during the hot summer months when donations to food banks and other nonprofits typically decline.

PARENTING

Indicators of Kids' Readiness for Kindergarten Kindergarten can be a pivotal time in a young child's life. Although many kids attend preschool or receive guided learning at home, kindergarten marks students' first official foray into the classroom. This is an exciting time for kids and parents, and one that may be fraught with nerves. That is especially true for parents who are not quite sure if their children are ready to begin their academic careers. While many school districts mandate that students must be at least 5 years old to begin kindergarten, age is not the only factor to consider when gauging kids' readiness for school. Child-education experts note that there is no single factor that determines kids' readiness for school, but rather there is a host of factors that, when taken together, can help parents determine if their youngster is ready for the rigors of the classroom. The following are some factors parents can consider as they try to determine if their children are ready to enroll in kindergarten.
Separation anxiety: Does your child handle separation well, or is he or she prone to meltdowns each time you leave for even a short period? School requires kids to spend several hours away from home and away from their parents, and parents might need to take steps to increase youngsters' comfort levels away from home before school begins.
Follows instructions: Experts at BabyCenter.com advise that children who are able to listen to simple instructions and follow them will be more apt to thrive in classroom settings. They also will be more capable of keeping up with teachers and peers.
Self-sufficiency: Has your child exhibited signs that he or she can be self-reliant? This includes putting on his or her coat, dressing him or herself and being able to use the bathroom on his or her own. If not, then you might need to work on the child's self-sufficiency before school begins.
Cursory knowledge of letters/numbers: While children on the verge of entering kindergarten need not be experts in language and mathematics, kindergarten curricula has become more rigorous thanks to the implementation of new standards. As a result, children should be able to recognize some letters and numbers before starting school. They do not necessarily have to enter school knowing them all or being able to read fluently, but the more familiar they are with language and mathematics the more likely they are to have a successful year in kindergarten. 44 August 2016
| azhealthandliving.com
Coping strategies: Parenting experts affiliated with Care.com say that children on the verge of entering kindergarten should be able to control their emotions to a certain extent. While children may occasionally cry in the kindergarten classroom, it's important that your child be able to cope with some of the ups and downs of classroom life without shedding tears.
Interest in learning: Another indicator of school readiness is a general interest in learning. Children who like hearing stories enjoy participating in discussions and activities and are stimulated by information and interactions with others are probably ready to begin their academic careers. Kindergarten readiness can be determined by many factors. Age alone does not dictate a child's readiness, as there are many additional potential indicators that can help parents determine if their youngsters are ready to begin school.

Don't make shots a form of punishment. The threat "behave or the doctor will give you a shot," is not helpful at all. It will only compound fears of shots and paint the picture that they are a punishment rather than a necessity. Listen to concerns. Let your child speak to you about why he or she is nervous about receiving a shot. Offer your support in a warm, matter-of-fact way. Hold your child. Kids may find that sitting on a parent's lap assuages their fears. For older children who can't fit on your lap, let them hug you or hold your hand for comfort.

How to Be Happier & Have More Meaningful Relationships The next time you’re out in a public place, whether at the grocery store, a baseball game or seeing a play, take a look around and note how many people have their noses buried in their smartphone. We think nothing of the ping from a text message, but the sound of a ringing phone is almost alarming these days. We’ve become programmed to communicate in short snippets, never fully sharing a story from beginning to end with all the details. In a world where we’re so overly connected with texting, email, blogs, Skype, Facebook, Twitter and more, it’s amazing how disconnected we really are as a society. We have so many forms of communication at our disposal, yet it’s exactly those mediums that often prevent us from having a real, meaningful conversation. A recent New York Times article stated, “If you don’t regularly exercise your ability to connect face-to-face, you’ll eventually find yourself lacking some of the basic biological capacity to do so.” When we’re not having real life conversations with people, we are lacking key parts of a communication and aren’t able to pick up on things such as sensing a sense of approval or disapproval and it’s easy to misunderstand what is being communicated as a result of not hearing inflections in someone’s voice that let us know how the message is meant to be interpreted. We can all attest to misinterpreting a text message or email and wondering for days what the person really meant, but we don’t always ask to clear it up.
all kinds of relationships, both professional and personal.
When was the last time you sat down to have a real conversation, whether on the phone or physically together, with a good friend or family member? We can all use the excuse we are too busy and don’t have time, but it is a matter of setting priorities. We live in a busy world. But as humans it is necessary for us to connect with others on a more intimate level—it does us good and honestly feels good. Real conversations also build your capacity to empathize with others, as well as, improve your overall health because you feel more connected to other human beings and to the world in general. Real communication is important for building
The time is now to get inspired to have a deeper conversation of your own with someone that you care about. Yes, a real phone conversation or sit down conversation over coffee takes time out of our already over scheduled calendars, but you’ll walk away with improved, closer relationships that are worth the investment. Having a meaningful phone or in person conversation on a regular basis will tap more deeply into your emotional side and enrich your life. 1. Unverified Weight Loss Pills · Diet pills have gained popularity since the 1800s despite being notorious for toxicity and accidental deaths. · The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) already cited over 300 dangerous weight loss, bodybuilding and enhancement products. · Unsafe supplements cause over 23,000 emergency room visits a year. · Hidden substances include medications, controlled substances and untested active compounds.
Risks: Some of these pills have caused stroke, liver injury, kidney failure, heart palpitations, seizures and even death.
Risks: Stomach ulcers, accelerated bone loss, arrhythmias, muscle tremors, cardiac arrest.
2. The Grapefruit Diet
5. The Master Cleanse
· Created in the 1930s with the misleading claim that grapefruit enzymes boost fat burning.
· Originally developed in the 1940s by Stanley Burroughs, and recently made popular by celebrities. Salt water, laxative tea and “lemonade” made of lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper are taken. · No evidence supports that cleanses lead to long-term weight loss.
Risks: Malnutrition, photosensitivity, medication interactions. Grapefruit interacts with about 43 percent of all meds, causing severe effects like arrhythmias, kidney damage and gastrointestinal bleeding
3. The Cotton Ball Diet (warning; extremely dangerous) · Popularized in the YouTube videos and pro-anorexia websites around 2013, in which cotton balls are consumed in an effort to stop hunger. Risks: Choking, malnutrition, increased risk for eating disorders, life-threatening intestinal obstruction.
4. The Caffeine Diet · Made popular through marketing hype and celebrity endorsements of caffeine-related supplements like green tea and bean coffee extract. · Two cups of coffee may help you burn about 14 kcal/hr, but this doesn’t work on people used to caffeine, no matter how large the dose. · Effects of 500mg of caffeine can mimic stress, which signals the body to store fat. 48 August 2016
| azhealthandliving.com
Risks: Mood swings, nausea, lean muscle loss, suppressed immunity, heart palpitations and low blood pressure.
6. The Cabbage Soup Diet · First appeared as a diet in the early 1900s and reappeared in the 1900s in trending fax and email messages. Limit of 1,000 calories per day as cabbage soup, mainly causing water weight loss. · Lacks complex carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals, and can be high in sodium. Risks: Stomach ulcers, accelerated bone loss, arrhythmias, muscle tremors, cardiac arrest.
The Takeaway There is no quick fix for long-term weight loss. It takes a minimum of lifestyle changes that include healthy nutrition and regular exercise.
What Athletes Should Know About Shin Splints By MS
Exercising more is a primary goal for many people, especially those interested in losing weight. Athletes also look to increase the time they spend exercising as new seasons draw near. While additional exercise can benefit many people, those who frequently perform weight-bearing exercises or repetitive motions, such as running, dancing and jumping, may find themselves battling shin splints. Also known as tibial stress syndrome, shin splints are a condition marked by pain in the shinbone, also known as the tibia. Shin splints are common among athletes and dancers who spend so much of their time on their feet. The Mayo Clinic says shin splints are caused by repetitive stress on the shinbone and connective tissues that attach muscles to the bone. Shin splints typically appear when there is a sudden increase in distance or intensity of a workout schedule. Shin splints are characterized by tenderness, swelling, soreness, and/or pain along the inner part of the lower leg. While the pain may stop when the body stops exercising, eventually that pain can transform into continuous pain. Many cases of shin splints can be alleviated through rest, icing and other self-care methods. Wearing proper footwear and modifying exercise routines can help ensure that shin splints are not a recurring problem. Should shin splints not clear up on their own, or if over-thecounter pain relievers prove ineffective at managing pain, then athletes should contact their physicians. Doctors will likely try to determine if the pain is caused by something other than shin splints. azhealthandliving.com | August 2016

How Entrepreneurs Can Spread the Word About Their Business Today's entrepreneurs face an uphill battle when starting their business. Whereas the competition in business has always been stiff, many trailblazers of yesteryear typically competed against only other locally owned businesses. But thanks to the Internet, businesses are now competing on a national, if not global, stage, making it harder than ever for businesspersons to draw attention to their products and services. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, roughly 66 percent of small businesses will survive their first two years. While that number should calm the nerves of entrepreneurs familiar with the widely circulated statistic that eight out of 10 small businesses fail, it's important to note that the five-year survival rate of establishments opened between 1994 and 2010 was just about 50 percent. A 50 percent chance to be in business five years after opening is certainly better than a 20 percent chance, but a 50/50 shot at being in business five years from now is unlikely to excite many prospective business owners. When starting out, small-business owners must find ways to make their presence felt in crowded marketplaces. Though the following strategies might take time and some trial and error before a business starts to draw some attention, smallbusiness owners can greatly increase their chances of being successful by committing to marketing.
Start early. Entrepreneurs need not wait until the doors of their businesses open to start spreading the word. In fact, waiting until the doors open may be too late. Take to social media sites, particularly the ones your target customer base is most likely to use, and establish a profile of yourself and your business. Update the status of your business at least once per week as you draw closer to your grand opening.
Start blogging. Blogging about your business and posting content to that blog that's easily shared is another effective way to spread the word about your products and services. When creating content, make sure it can be easily shared through Facebook and other social media platforms. Such content can go from being seen by one potential customer to being seen by hundreds in a matter of minutes. 50 August 2016 | azhealthandliving.com
Encourage reviews. Few modern consumers make a purchase without first reading some product reviews. A recent survey from Jupiter Research found that 77 percent of people take the time to read reviews of a product or service before making an online purchase. Small-business owners can use that to their advantage by encouraging customers to review their products and services. In addition, before opening your business, contact locally based bloggers and offer them the chance to review your products as a means to spreading buzz before opening your doors. Seek help from family and friends. Friends and family members are wonderful assets for small-business owners. Ask friends and family to spread the word about your business via social media and traditional word-of-mouth. Many of your friends and family are no doubt proud of you for going out on your own, so expect them to be enthusiastic when asked to help spread the word. Small-business owners face a big challenge in getting their businesses off the ground. But there are ways to spread the word and increase your chances of being in business for many years to come.
Learn About Your Digital Footprint
By MS
Digital footprint is the term that describes the trail a person leaves online. It can include information transmitted online, such as registration data for forums, emails and other attachments, and even videos and digital images. Just because something is deleted on a personal computer or from a social media site doesn't mean that data has gone away forever. It may be lurking in the digital walls of the Internet's hidden library. Traces of information can turn up when they are least expected. Whatever one does online is contributing to an ever-growing portrait of that person online. A digital trail is being left every single day. With this information in mind, everyone who relies on the Internet should exercise caution with regard to their online activities. · Do not make any comments online that you would not be willing to say in public. Hiding behind the mask of the Internet is no longer possible. · Recognize that college admissions staff and employers look at social media sites and profile pages. Images you post and comments you make online may give college and university admissions staffers and prospective employers the wrong impression of you. · Students who work from computers on a school network may have their every move watched by administrators. Cyberbullying, foul language and inappropriate behavior can be discovered. · The more details offered online the bigger a target a person becomes to those looking to take advantage of easy information. · Websites build lists about preferences and habits. While many are used to tailor consumer opportunities, this information can fall into the wrong hands and tell a lot about your schedule and routine. · Routinely search for yourself online to see if any incorrect or unflattering information comes up. azhealthandliving.com |August 2016

Charlize Theron
One of Hollywood’s leading stars uses her fame for good Well-known actress Charlize Theron has been a Hollywood hit maker for years—and that doesn’t look like that’s going to change anytime soon. A citizen of both South Africa and America, Theron was just named in the top 100 influential people by Time and has starred in several recent blockbuster films, including “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “The Huntsman: Winter’s War,” among many others. Despite her success though—or perhaps because of it —Theron is known for being a philanthropist and private about her personal life. In 2007, Theron founded the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP), a nonprofit that “invests in programs that educate and empower [African] youth to keep themselves safe from HIV/AIDS.” Recently, CTAOP partnered with the shoe brand TOMS to raise funds for their cause. “For every TOMS + CTAOP product purchased, TOMS will donate $5 to CTAOP in support of programs working to help African youth keep themselves safe from HIV/AIDS. As always, with every product you purchase, TOMS will help a person in need,” according to the TOMS website. “Everyone has a part to play in making our world better,” Theron recently told Footwear News. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have been given an opportunity and a platform to speak about an issue that is very important to me. I hope that maybe one talk given or one piece written reaches someone in a way that encourages or inspires them to do what they can to make a difference.” “It’s easy to become jaded in this world and feel as if 52 August 2016 | azhealthandliving.com
humanity is apathetic, but the deeper I have dived with the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, the more I’ve realized that people want to help,” she continued. “People do care — a lot of times they just need help learning what role they can play.” In addition to her work with CTAOP, Theron has been an United Nations Messenger of Peace. She has also worked with PETA, the ONE Campaign, and several other social issues. In addition to her philanthropic work, Theron is the adoptive mother of two children. “Everything has changed!” she told ELLE CANADA when asked about motherhood. “When I became a mother, I had already wanted it for a long time. I craved motherhood, and I was incredibly invested in it. It’s not easy to adopt, even when you’re a celebrity. But when I held my children in my arms, I was happier than I ever expected to be. Today, motherhood is a source of joy every single day, something stronger than everything else, more powerful than my career.” While her adoptions have been well publicized, for the most part, Theron is one of Hollywood’s more private celebrities. She told ELLE CANADA why: “… I don’t expose myself in my films—I play a role. There is a false and very widespread belief that an actress has to give up her privacy. I don’t believe that. I don’t reveal some parts of my private life to the public. That’s what I need to do to preserve my mental health. I want to be able to come home at night and feel that part of me is still intact, secret.” While her private life may remain a bit of a mystery, her career is very publically successful. Next year, Theron will star in “Fast and Furious 8” as a villain—one that many media outlets say could change the entire popular franchise. She will also star in “The Coldest City,” which is another highly anticipated thriller. Still, despite her busy career, all indicators point to the fact that Theron will likely continue to be involved in charitable endeavors for a long time to come. To keep up with Theron’s social media adventures, follow @charlizeafrica on Instagram and Twitter. Learn more about CTAOP at www.charlizeafricaoutreach.org. azhealthandliving.com |August 2016

How to Transform a Fixer-Upper The real estate market will always have its ups and downs, but real estate is an oft-profitable investment. Real estate investors do their investing for various reasons. Some see a house as a place to hang their hats for years and years, while others look at properties as nothing more than investments. Buying a home with the intent to fix it up and resell it is called a "fix and flip." In such situations, investors buy homes at below-market prices before refurbishing the homes with the goal of recouping their initial investment and then some when the homes are ultimately put back on the market. Flipping has become popular for both expert remodelers and novice investors. RealtyTracÂŽ, the nation's leading source for comprehensive housing data, noted in its "Year-End and Q4 2015 U.S. Home Flipping" report that 5.5 percent of all single family home and condo sales during the year were flipped properties. This marked an increase from the same time the previous year. Investing in a fixer-upper requires a leap of faith and a vision of what the home can look like in the future. Turning a real estate lemon into lemonade requires certain skills and a good measure of patience. The following are some guidelines to get anyone started.
Don't bite off more than you can chew. Make an honest assessment of your abilities and which renovations, if any, you can handle. If you are unskilled or inexperienced working with your hands, then it can be easy for an investment property to quickly become a money pit. Before purchasing a property, hire a trained home inspector to tour the home with you and point out all of the areas that will need renovation. With this list, begin getting estimates on how much money the work will entail. Determine if this fits with your budget or not. You do not want to invest so much that it exceeds what you could feasibly recoup when it comes time to sell. Overlook cosmetic things when visiting properties. Cosmetic issues include all of the easily replaceable items in a home, such as carpeting, appliances, interior paint colors and cabinetry. Focus on the bones of the house - the architectural integrity and those little touches that you envision having a "wow" factor.
Seek the help of experts. Some flippers think they'll save the most money by doing all of the work themselves. This isn't always the case. Professional architects, designers, and contractors may help you save money. Contractors have an intimate knowledge of where to buy materials and may be able to negotiate prices based on wholesale or trade costs. In 56 August 2016 | azhealthandliving.com
addition, experts can help you avoid common pitfalls because they've already done this type of work time and again. It's smart to rely on expert advice, even if it means investing a little bit more.
Save money by doing some work yourself. While the pros may tackle the more complex parts of a given project, such as rewiring electricity or changing the footprint of a home, you can still be involved. Ask to participate in demolition, such as taking down walls or removing old materials from the home. Such participation may be fun, and it can save you substantial amounts of money on labor.
Recognize that not everything must be completely redone. Realize that, in some instances, a coat of paint and some new accents may be all you need to transform a space. For example, if kitchen cabinets are in good condition, see if they can be refaced or painted instead of replaced entirely. Install new door pulls/handles to add visual interest. Look for some ready-made items, such as bookshelves, instead of installing custom carpentry.
Think about what the buyer wants and not what you want. Renovate with an eye toward prospective buyers' needs. Keep things neutral and accommodating. Research the latest trends to understand what buyers might be seeking in a home. You want potential buyers to envision themselves moving right in.
Enjoy Mosquito-Free Patio Parties By MS
Hosts who want to keep mosquitoes at bay during their next patio party can try the following tips.
Address areas with standing water. Standing water is
attractive to mosquitoes because it gives them a place to breed. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, studies have shown that female mosquitoes prefer to lay eggs in water that collects or is stored in man-made containers. The CDC recommends that items that can collect water, including pet bowls, vases, birdbaths and pool covers, be emptied and scrubbed at least once per week. When items like pet bowls are not in use, turn them over to empty them and then keep them covered until they must be used again. Tightly seal any water storage containers to prevent mosquitoes from getting inside and laying eggs.
Simulate wind. Few people may think to bring window or
desk fans outside when entertaining, but simulating wind can deter mosquitoes from invading patios and decks. Mosquitoes fly slowly and often cannot make it through the simulated wind created by man-made fans. In addition, fans may blow away the very things, such as body odor that draw mosquitoes to humans in the first place.
Light citronella candles and/or torches. Citronella candles and tiki torches that burn citronella are effective mosquito deterrent as well. Such candles and torches give off smoke that confuses mosquitoes and masks the human scents that attract the bugs. Place torches around your patio but find somewhere other than the dining table to place citronella candles if you decide to use them, as some people find the candles aggravating or bothersome.
Plant mosquito-repellent plants. The right plants might help
you keep mosquitoes at bay as well. For example, catmint contains an oil called nepeta faassenii that can be used as an all-natural mosquito repellent. Closely related to catmint, catnip also can be an effective mosquito deterrent. But both species can be invasive, so be sure to contact a local lawn and garden professional before planting any plants to repel mosquitoes. azhealthandliving.com |August 2016

How to Get & Keep Your Finances in Order In 2015, analysts with the Government Accountability Office found that the average American between the ages of 55 and 64 had accrued roughly $104,000 in retirement savings, a shockingly low figure that would make it very difficult for men and women nearing retirement to maintain their quality of life into their golden years. While many people fear retiring with small nest eggs that fear has apparently not been enough to inspire men and women to commit to saving more money for their golden years. But retirement saving is essential, especially since life expectancies are rising. According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, global life expectancies at birth are expected to rise to 76 years by the mid-21st century. That's a far cry from the mid-20th century, when global life expectancy from birth was roughly 48 years. Longer life expectancies mean men and women will have to find ways to make their money last throughout their retirement. The earlier adults figure out how to keep their finances in order, the more money they will have when the time comes to retire. The following are a handful of strategies men and women can employ to rein in their finances in the hopes of saving more for retirement.
Review your finances at least once per month. Hectic schedules or fear of the financial unknown makes it easy for adults to ignore their finances for long stretches of time. But adults should review their financial situation at least once per month, examining how they are spending their money and if there are any ways to cut costs and redirect dollars going out into their retirement accounts. Redirecting as little as $100 per month into a retirement account can add up to a substantial amount of money over time.
Pay monthly bills immediately. Many adults receive monthly bills for utilities, rent/mortgage, phone and television/Internet. If you have the money in your account, pay these bills the moment you receive them. Doing so is a great way to avoid overspending on other items, such as dining out or shopping trips, and then finding yourself scrambling to pay bills come their due dates. Once all the monthly bills have been paid and you have deposited money into your savings/retirement accounts, then you can spend any leftover money on nights out on the town or new clothes if you feel the need. 60 August 2016
| azhealthandliving.com
Buy only what you can afford. It sounds simple, but many adults would have far more in their retirement accounts if they simply avoided buying items they cannot afford. According to a 2015 Harris Poll conducted on behalf of NerdWallet, the average credit card debt per indebted American household in 2015 was $15,762.07. Adults who want to get their finances in order and start saving more for retirement should put the plastic away and only make purchases with cash or debit cards that take money directly out of their bank accounts once the card is swiped.
Downsize. Downsizing is another way to free up more money for retirement savings. Empty nesters can save money by downsizing to a smaller home or even an apartment. Drivers who no longer need room for the whole family can downsize from SUVs or minivans to smaller, more fuelefficient vehicles. Adults also may be able to downsize their entertainment, switching from costly cable packages to basic plans or cutting the cord entirely and subscribing to more affordable streaming services. Getting a grip on spending can help adults save more for retirement and ensure their golden years are not compromised by lack of funds.
Moving is the best medicine. Keeping active and losing weight are just two of the ways that you can fight osteoarthritis pain. In fact, for every pound you lose, that’s four pounds less pressure on each knee. For information on managing pain, go to fightarthritispain.org.

Medication Mismanagement Can Be Prevented Medication management is an important issue for seniors and their families. Failure to manage medications properly can threaten the lives of seniors, highlighting the emphasis families must place on ensuring seniors take their medications in strict adherence to their physicians' instructions. Polypharmacy, or the taking of multiple medications for different conditions, can be a potential health hazard for the thousands of seniors who must manage health conditions with prescription drugs. Harmful drug interactions are a result of the confusion that can arise when seniors take multiple medications at the same time. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists estimates that more than 34 percent of senior citizens are prescribed medications by more than 1 physician and 72 percent use medications they were prescribed more than six months prior. Many people also have begun "pharmacy shopping" to save money. According to a study published in 2010 in American Nurse Today, 44 percent of men and 57 percent of women older than age 65 take five or more medications per week, with some taking as many as 10. Medication confusion is one risk, but older adults also metabolize medications differently than young people. As a result, they may be more susceptible to overdose or other ill effects. Families looking to help seniors effectively manage their medications should consider the following tips.
Keep a running list of medications. Maintain a list of all medications being taken, noting both prescription and over-the-counter medications and any supplements and herbs. Provide a copy to any new doctors you visit and any new pharmacies you patronize.
Use pill sorters. Medication sorters can keep medications organized and eliminate some of the personal error in medication management. Organizers have daily slots and may differentiate between nighttime and daytime medications.
Understand why each medication is being prescribed. Ask your pharmacist and doctor to explain why each medication is prescribed. This information should be printed on the prescription label. Some drugs designed for one symptom may actually be used to treat other issues as well. 62 August 2016
| azhealthandliving.com
Ask for help. Some seniors may benefit from friendly reminders from a loved one regarding when to take certain medications, especially if they need to take multiple doses throughout the day. Cognitively impaired seniors may require the services of a visiting nurse or another caregiver. Recognize that not all medications are right for seniors. The American Geriatrics Society maintains a list of medications that older adults should avoid or take with extreme caution. Some drugs pose a high risk of side effects or interactions, while others are less effective. Discuss alternatives with your physician if you are prescribed one of these medications. Keep a medication diary. Record any side effects that occur and how the medications make you feel. Always bring up issues promptly with a doctor. Proper medication management can help seniors avoid drug-related accidents or worse.
Home Safety Checks to Complete Today By MS
Accidents or injuries can occur in any part of the home, but seniors who take certain preventative measures can greatly reduce their injury risk. The security resource A Secure Life points out that more than 18,000 Americans die every year from injuries that take place in the home. Unintentional injuries account for millions of medical visits each year.
Change Your Thoughts. Change Your Words. Change Your World. Sponsored by
Periodic inspections for potential hazards can keep everyone safe. The following are a handful of ways to ensure your home is as safe as possible.
Check for sturdy handrails and prevent tripping hazards. Falls are one of the leading causes of home injuries. To help prevent falls, make sure that staircases feature sturdy railings and that there is ample lighting in walkways. Remove obstructions from frequently used paths inside and outside the home. In addition, insert nonslip padding beneath runners or throw rugs.
Check for frayed wires or faulty outlets. Address any
electrical problems around the house, including frayed wiring and faulty outlets. Sparks can lead to fires, and poor wiring may cause unforeseen problems behind walls. Repair or replace any loose or frayed wires on all electrical devices. Be sure that cords do not run under doorways or rugs. Replace outlets that are in disrepair and install ones with groundfault current interrupters as an added precaution.
Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace
the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors at least twice per year, and test them to make sure they're in good working order at least once per month. The National Fire Protection Association recommends replacing hardwired smoke alarms every 10 years. Battery-operated alarms may need to be replaced even sooner. Many carbon monoxide detectors work for five to seven years. Check the back of alarms for a date stamp that indicates how old the product is and when it expires. azhealthandliving.com | August 2016
