The verse reportedly was written on the wall of Mother Teresa’s home for abandoned children in Calcutta, India, and is widely attributed to her. Some sources say that the words were written on the wall in Mother Teresa’s own room. In any case, their association with Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity has made them popular worldwide, expressing as they do, the spirit in which they lived their lives. It seems to be based on a composition originally by Kent Keith, but much of the second half has been rewritten in a more spiritual way. Until next time,

Valley of the Sun United Way Encourages Early Literacy
V
alley of the Sun United Way is the largest investor of health and human service programs in Maricopa County, touching millions of lives each year. United Way has served the health and human service needs of families and individuals since 1925. Together with their 90,000 individual donors, 700 business supporters, volunteers and advocates they are transforming individual lives and entire communities with three community objectives that build the foundation of a stronger Maricopa County: ensure children and youth succeed, end hunger, homelessness and increase financial stability. Partners and community members play a key role in their success to help future generations succeed, to increase school readiness, early literacy, grade-level reading and high school graduation. Unfortunately, not all children have a level playing field. Children in families that struggle with poverty can be left behind. That is why Valley of the Sun United Way has made it one of their key objectives to ensure children and youth succeed.
Early literacy and grade level reading is more important than ever this school year as children must read at grade level by end of third grade to move forward to fourth grade. “Children learn to read until third grade and at that point they truly need to be strong readers to continue their learning,”
Vice President of Community Impact for Valley of the Sun United Way, Janet Garcia explains. Valley of the Sun United Way has a challenge for the community to play a role in long-term systemic change. They are encouraging families to talk and read their way through the season with their Million Minutes Volunteer Reading Challenge. The goal is to collectively read one million minutes to local children by May 2014. "This season invites fun opportunities to encourage literacy and build a life-long love of reading," Garcia says. "It's the everyday holiday moments like baking and playing games that will develop vocabulary and reading skills. That is the best gift you can give your children, as we know that those who are read to at least three times weekly are nearly twice as likely to score in the top 25 reading percentile." Valley of the Sun United Way will provide the tools and support needed to get started. Valley Gynecologist Improves Patient Care with Robotics
T
he Food and Drug Administration cleared the single-site robotic instruments for use in gynecology. Dr. Ivor Benjamin, gynecological oncologist at the Arizona Center for care (AZCCC), was chosen as one of only 27 doctors in the nation to be trained to perform this procedure. “In the medical field, we are constantly looking for ways to improve and become more efficient when caring for our patients,” Dr. Benjamin says. “This new technology is a huge step forward. Having performed more than 800 robot-assisted surgeries, I am happy the da Vinci Surgical System team selected me to go through this training and pioneer it in Ariz.
Dr. Benjamin became the first surgeon in Ariz. to perform a single-site gynecological procedure earlier this year. He has since performed several gynecological robotic procedures and hopes that other hospitals and doctors will see the benefits this new technology brings to patients suffering from gynecological issues. Until recently, surgery for most gynecologic conditions was performed using a large abdominal incision. The da Vinci Robotic System technology now allows surgeons to perform gynecologic procedures for women through a single incision rather than three to five small incisions or through one large open incision. “The robot translates the surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger movements at the control console into corresponding movements with the instruments,” Dr. Benjamin says. “Using the da Vinci Surgical System, the surgeon sitting at the console, is able to continuously view the scene of the surgery and perform highly precise surgical movements without nearly as much fatigue as in traditional surgical procedures.” According to Dr. Benjamin, the improvement over laparoscopic techniques is seen in the improvement of the surgeon’s visibility and dexterity. Traditional laparoscopic techniques have limited movement when compared with the human wrist, making it more difficult to adapt to when surgeons are performing more complex procedures. 20

That’s not the case anymore,” Dr. Benjamin says. “This technology provides the best possible way to treat patients suffering from gynecological issues more efficiently.” “Unlike previous procedures which required multiple incisions and produced more pain and scarring for patients, this new robotic system allows for surgeons to offer a less invasive option to a broader group of patients suffering from complex gynecologic issues,” Dr. Benjamin says. “In addition, the technology will help reduce the procedure time and hospital stay time as well. My patients go home the next day, they’re back to work within one to two weeks.”

“We all benefited from the Boys & Girls Club as children,” executive Vice President of AXA Advisors, LLC, Southwest region, Micus says. The Boys & Girls Club served Micus very well. Excelling in both Club sports and educational programs, Micus earned a scholarship to college where he played NCAA football, first for the University of Hawaii, then for the University of Northern Colorado. “After earning my Bachelor of Science degree in finance, I flirted with playing football professionally, but decided I was better off using my head for business rather than as target practice,” Micus explains. Ever faithful to his Boys & Girls Club roots, Micus took a servant leadership role with the organization for nearly a decade, as well as working with his AXA team to pay it forward. A secret to his success is servant leadership. “The concept of servant leadership is simple – if you care enough to first serve others, you will be enriched with personal and organizational success,” Micus says. A Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale board member from 2005 to 2013, Micus volunteered as cochair for its Celebrity Golf Invitational from 2011 to 2013, raising more than $100,000 each year for the Club to continue its critical mission. They found that 100 percent of the women in all three groups had antibodies against HPV 16 and 18 in their blood for up to four years. Antibody levels were comparable for women receiving two doses six months apart and those receiving the full three doses. The researchers also found that while antibody levels among women who received one dose were lower than among those who received the full three doses, the levels appeared stable, suggesting that these are lasting responses. In addition, the levels of antibodies in women from the one and two dose groups were five to 24 times higher than the levels of antibodies in women who did not receive vaccination, but had prior HPV infection. According to Safaeian, the findings suggest promise for simplified vaccine administration schedules that might be less expensive. Vaccination with two doses or even one dose, could simplify the logistics and reduce the cost of vaccination, which could be especially important in the developing world, where more than 85 percent of cervical cancers occur and where cervical cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer-related deaths.

ew things can prove more painful or inconvenient than stomach bugs. Digestive tract illnesses can cause many to spend several hours of the day running to restrooms while confining others to the house for extended periods. Though often temporary, stomach bugs can last several days to more than a week and may lead to more dire situations if not properly treated.
Causes Stomach bugs are known as gastroenteritis, a condition characterized by an inflamed, irritated stomach and intestines. The Mayo Clinic says people are most likely to contract gastroenteritis after eating contaminated foods or drinking contaminated water. Sharing items, like utensils, with someone who is infected is another way to contract gastroenteritis. Viral gastroenteritis is caused by a virus that enters the body. However, bacteria and parasites also are responsible for stomach bug outbreaks. Viruses that trigger gastroenteritis include adenoviruses, rotaviruses, calciviruses, astroviruses, and noroviruses. Bacteria that can cause gastroenteritis include E. coli, salmonella, campylobacter and shingella.
Symptoms Stomach bugs often strike suddenly. Sufferers may experience queasiness or nausea and a loss of appetite. Pain or bloating 26

in the stomach also may occur. Vomiting and diarrhea often cause many people to suspect something is wrong. Some stomach conditions are also accompanied by fever, achiness and lethargy.
Treatment Many people opt for a wait and see approach when struck with stomach bugs. Gastroenteritis often heals on its own. Some refer to it as a "24-hour-bug" and find that once the stomach has been purged clean, the offender no longer wreaks havoc on the body. However, stomach bugs can be more persistent as well. Sufferers should visit a doctor if vomiting or diarrhea last more than a few days. Doctors may take a stool sample to determine what is behind the bug. In the event of a bacterial infection, an antibiotic may be needed to clear up the infection. Visiting a doctor when stomach problems persist is also beneficial to rule out certain conditions, such as colitis, ulcers or Crohn's disease.
Helpful hints When a stomach bug strikes, it is best to refrain from eating, especially when vomiting regularly. Stick to clear broths and liquids, which are easy on the digestive system, while the stomach is irritated. Once vomiting has subsided, sufferers should opt for a bland diet. When plagued by
diarrhea, the BRAT diet is advisable. This acronym stands for Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast. These foods can help bind a person and are relatively easy to digest. Since a stomach bug often leads to dehydration, drink plenty of fluids. To restore salt and electrolyte balances, sports drinks are advisable for adults, while a beverage like Pedialyte is best for children and the elderly. When symptoms begin to subside, sufferers can gradually add foods back into their diets. However, men and women should avoid particularly spicy or heavy foods until they are convinced that they have fully recovered. Many people are tempted to turn to an antidiarrheal medication at the first sign of a stomach bug. However, the side effects of gastroenteritis are the body's method of ridding itself from whatever has brought on symptoms. Failure to let nature run its course could result in a rebound of symptoms or a longer-lasting sickness. To avoid suffering from stomach bugs, here are some tips to consider.
• Frequently wash your hands when preparing food and thoroughly cook foods, particularly meats, poultry and eggs, to reduce potential exposure to bacteria.
• E. coli may be present on some fresh produce, so wash produce carefully before consumption.
• Consider taking a probiotic supplement to increase the amount of good bacteria in your digestive tract. Yogurt also contains live cultures that are good at maintaining digestive health. • Avoid contact with people who claim to have the stomach flu.
• Promptly consult a doctor if symptoms do not go away or if you have a high fever or blood in your stool. This may indicate a different illness. Stomach bugs are never enjoyable, but there are ways to manage the symptoms and get back on the road to recovery. azhealthandliving.com |January 2014

Then, resolve that you will intentionally invest your time and energy to work on your resolutions during the year, to live a happier life by implementing these 12 happiness strategies – one each month.
February: A Month of Gratitude Gratitude is the antidote to greed, envy and jealously. We feel much happier when we are being grateful for what we have, rather than envious of what we do not. Remember, no one has everything! This month, each night before going to bed, take a daily gratitude inventory. Write down three things you are grateful for about your life – relationships, work, character, family, country, the world around you and your life.

June: A Month of Love Traditionally, June is a month of weddings – and love is all-around us. Each day this month, call, write or email someone you love or care deeply about – one per day – tell them how much they mean to you – how happy you are that they are a part of your life – even if you haven’t been the best communicator up to now. Notice reactions – yours and theirs.
July: A Month of Spirituality Studies have proven that people who have spirituality in their lives – whether it is their own secular belief system, their own faith or some organized religion – are happier. We don’t know if it is because of the fellowship of a caring group of like-thinking folks or the spiritual beliefs themselves. This month, make a conscious effort to spend some moments each day – perhaps during lunch – repeating at least one “prayer” or belief you hold.
August: A Month of Health, Fitness, Skill Summer is a great time to focus on increasing your health and fitness – and on using your skills and abilities to their max. This month, begin some daily fitness regimen (check with your doctor first if needed) – even if it is only walking. In addition, make a list of your top skills, talents and abilities and assess if you are using them to their fullest. If not, take one-step per day to begin doing so.

This month is your chance to decide what difference you would like to make in the world. Spend a few minutes each day at lunchtime and write down ideas about how you can make a positive difference in the world. At the end of the month, decide on a plan of action – and begin! October: A Month of Savoring Fall is a season to enjoy the changing foliage in many parts of the world. Consciously spend at least five minutes each day focusing your attention exclusively on something of beauty outside – changing leaves, trees, clouds, sky – something. November: A Month of Forgiveness Forgiveness is a powerful, although a slightly more complicated, happiness strategy. We forgive others to make us feel better. This month, examine your life. See if there are any lingering resentments holding you back from joy. If so, do two things first, write the apology letter you would have liked to receive from the person who has wronged you. Second, rise above your desire for revenge, write your letter of forgiveness to them. No need to
mail it, just recall the hurt or violation. End the letter with your statement of forgiveness. Just this simple act of writing a forgiveness letter can often grant you freedom from your negative thoughts and give you increased happiness.
December: A Month of Generosity The end of the year is a time for giving – a time to donate your time, money, skills, positive energy and your attention – to others to help make their life a little better. Mental Health Benefits of Exercise
egular exercise can benefit the body in many ways, helping maintain healthier weights and lower risks for developing potentially deadly diseases. Though many people are quick to associate exercise with its physical benefits, those hours spent on the treadmill also can boost brainpower. According to Dr. Barry Gordon, professor of neurology and cognitive science at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and co-author of "Intelligent Memory: Improve the Memory That Makes You Smarter," exercise has a direct impact on the brain. Exercise works directly on brain tissue, improving the connections between nerve cells, creating new synapses, growing new neurons and blood vessels, and improving cell energy efficiency. While many people may begin an exercise regimen with a goal of trimming their waistlines or toning their bodies, they might be happy to know that those physical benefits are accompanied by several cognitive benefits, as well. As the American Psychological Association acknowledges, the connection between exercise and mental health is hard to ignore and the APA notes that the following are just a few of the mental benefits men and women might reap from regular exercise.
Improved mood Many people feel great after exercising, especially if that exercise comes at the end of a particularly stressful day. However, those extra laps on the track or those hours spent on the treadmill don't just pay short-term dividends. In a controlled trial overseen by Duke University researcher and clinical psychologist James Blumenthal, sedentary adults antidepressants for men and women with major depressive disorder were assigned into one of four groups: supervised exercise, home-based exercise, antidepressant therapy or a placebo pill. In addition, in following up with patients a year later, Blumenthal found that those who continued to exercise. In addition, in following up with patients a year later, Blumenthal found that those who continued to exercise had lower depression scores than those participants who were less active. Blumenthal's study was not the only one to conclude that exercise can have a positive impact on mood. Antidote to anxiety Some researchers, Otto included, have begun to examine the effects of exercise on treating and possibly preventing anxiety. The body's nervous system responds quickly when people feel, frightened or threatened; often causing the body's heart rate to increase, sweating and dizziness to occur. Those people who are especially sensitive to anxiety respond to these feelings with fear, and that makes them more likely to develop panic disorders. However, Otto and fellow researcher Jasper Smits of the Anxiety Research and Treatment Program at Southern Methodist University studied the effects that regular workouts might have on people prone to anxiety. Since exercise produces many of the same physical reactions, such as sweating and an elevated heart rate, the body produces when responding to fear or threats, Otto and Smits wanted to determine if exercise might help people prone to anxiety become less likely to panic when experiencing fear or threats. In studying 60 participants with heightened sensitivity to anxiety, Otto and Smits found that the subjects who participated in a two-week exercise program exhibited marked improvements in anxiety sensitivity compared to those participants who did not take part in the exercise program. Otto and Smith concluded that this improvement was a result of the exercise group participants learning to associate the symptoms common to both fear and exercise, such as sweating and an elevated heart rate, with something positive (exercise) instead of something negative (anxiety).

Q. I just moved from the Midwest to Arizona and I am finding that my eyes are more red, irritated and scratchy. Is that a common issue in Arizona? A. Because of the prevalence of our sunny dry days, Arizona residents statistically have a much higher incidence of dry eye problems. For the most part, these issues can be kept under control with the use of OTC (over-the-counter) artificial tears used 3 to 4 times per day or more. Other solutions include prescription drops, such as Restasis, or lacrimal plugs (a painless procedure of inserting microscopic plugs into the tear ducts to slow down drainage of normally produced tears). There are a multitude of brands of artificial tears. We do not recommend that you use any brand that promises to “get the red out”; these brands actually make the eye dryer and can predispose the eyes to other diseases. Using any artificial tear often is satisfactory for most people. If the artificial tear that you try seems to burn a lot when you place a drop in your eye, it is possible that you may be allergic to the preservatives in most artificial tears and you may need to find a “preservative-free” tear. If the dryness and irritations are not easily helped by these artificial tears, then consultation with an ophthalmologist to rule out other conditions would be advisable. –Dr. Walman Walman Eye Center 602.222.2020

Q. Did you know new research ties vitamin D to the development and pathology of Multiple Sclerosis? A. When I was studying neurology at the Parker College in Dallas, Texas, I was always fascinated by the fact that a person’s chance of developing MS seemed to be tied to their birthplace. Research suggested that differing parts of the country had differing rates of MS. If you were born and lived (to about the age of 11) in a particular part of the country, you would have a chance of developing MS at a rate that was inherent to that part of the country. Where you were born and raised was the important factor. I was always puzzled by this data. I thought that maybe it had something to do with the nutrients in the soil or maybe toxins in the environment. Now, 15 years since I have finished my neurology training, science may have the answer. It seems that vitamin D may be responsible. Vitamin D is created in our bodies when sunlight interacts with our skin. As a child ages and their immune system develops, lack of vitamin D may contribute to immune system abnormalities that can lead to MS. It appears that vitamin D is important for healthy immune system function and that lack of vitamin D in the immature immune system can lead to autoimmune diseases and conditions like MS.
Q. How are spider veins treated?
A. Spider veins are a common problem among the young and old. Spider veins are small blue and red vessels visible within the skin, usually on the legs but sometimes present on the face and chest. There are many treatments available. Sclerotherapy is a treatment of diseased veins using a saline solution which is injected into the veins, sometimes with the help of ultrasound. This solution irritates the vein valve and then closes them. This is not only done for cosmetic reasons, so your insurance may or may not pay for it depending upon the diagnosis and condition of the disease. Sclerotherapy is typically done only on the legs. IPL and laser treatments are used to treat spider veins on the face and chest. With these treatments there is typically little to no down time, but redness and discomfort may last for hours to days. Insurance will not pay for spider vein treatment, but the cost is usually minimal. Consult your primary care physician or vascular specialist to determine the best treatment plan for you. Q. What can your dentist do to repair a broken tooth?
A.
Many of us have unfortunately experienced chipping a tooth, whether it is from a fall or just from chewing. If you discover that you have broken or chipped a tooth, there is no need to panic! Your dentist can be your best friend before further damage is caused. Chipped teeth can become infected, which could lead to you losing the tooth, so it is important to visit your dentist. Even if the chip is minor, there may be a fracture that you cannot see. If the tooth is painful take an OTC pain reliever and rinse your mouth with salt water. If the chip is sharp, use a piece of wax paraffin or sugarless chewing gum to protect your lips, tongue and cheeks. Stick to soft foods and avoid biting down on the broken tooth until your dentist appointment. Your dentist can fill an enamel chip or use a tooth-colored composite resin to bond the chip, depending on how the tooth chipped or broke. This is great for front teeth or a tooth that can be seen, so that your smile remains, as consistent as possible. For larger chips or breaks, a crown might be necessary to protect the tooth and improve its appearance. A chipped or broken tooth is not a deal breaker; just make sure to visit your dentist so that a chip does not turn into a crack! Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) can be very painful and is often accompanied by headaches, toothaches and more bizarre symptoms. Sleep-disordered breathing symptoms can both overlap and mimic those of sleepdisordered breathing. Q. Are there specific activities I can do to improve my memory skills? A. The general idea of memory and aging is to keep the mind highly focused and engaged in activities that demand concentration or mastering new skills. I would like to address simple activities that we can do to spark memory neurons. The following is an activity to keep your brain working in the area of prospective memory, whereby you must remember to perform a planned action or intention at the appropriate time. 1. Pick two or three words, write them down and look them over until they connect in your brain (you can make up a story or think of funny ways to link them together). 2. In 30-60 minutes, remember to say these 2-3 words before you complete an upcoming task (i.e., I will remember to say my special words before I open the locker at the gym or before I leave the house). 3. Check to see if you were successful at remembering to recall the 2-3 words and if you remembered them correctly. 4. Working memory means remembering things within a very short span of time (minutes). To work this area of memory think of a word, spell it forward and then spell it backwards. As this skill improves, pick harder and longer words. joint disorder (TMD) can be very painful and is often accompanied by headaches, toothaches and more bizarre symptoms. sleep-disordered breathing symptoms can both overlap and mimic those of sleep-disordered breathing. Many dentists consider temporomandibular joint problems to be somewhat of a gray area because the conditions associated with its complex task of permitting the movement of the jaw without friction is sometimes difficult to define and even more complicated to treat. Some dentists believe that sleep-disordered breathing is partly the existence of a temporomandibular joint problem and partly the manifestation of a sleep-disordered breathing problem. The simplest way to understand the connection: the bruxism (teeth grinding) or jaw shifting associated with sleep-disordered breathing (occurring when sleeping patients are unconsciously trying to find the best possible positioning of their airway) may inflame the temporomandibular joint or exacerbate a problem with the joint that was pre-existing. Headaches, a clicking jaw, malocclusion (misalignment of teeth) and condyle and disc displacement are all associated with sleep-disordered breathing . However, these symptoms often occur in patients with sleep-disordered breathing as well. Q. What are the treatment options for heel pain? A. Plantar Fasciitis is described as sharp pain radiates along the heel through the bottom of the foot. The pain becomes worst in the morning when getting out of bed. Plantar fasciitis is often seen in the middle-aged, elder population and athletes who receive repeated stress on their foot. For those who spend longer time on their feet, the bottom foot muscle tissue group: the plantar fascia is easily getting tired and tension is increased in a long-term period. Inflammation could develop with time and stimulate the deposition of calcium. In some cases of plantar fasciitis, a heel spur caused by deposition of calcium could be seen on the X-ray image. Even though Plantar Fasciitis is an inflammation of the soft tissue group of the foot, in some cases it may be a degenerative change in those who have related foot injury such as runners, dancers and patients who are overweight. The repeated stress and bearing heavy weight for long period of time could be risk factors of developing Plantar Fasciitis pain. The treatment of Plantar Fasciitis heel pain is to manage the pain. Conservative approach such as RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) is used. Treatment of acupuncture and physical modality usually achieves a better outcome. For patients active in sports, using elastic taping across the arch of the foot could stabilize the weakly muscle groups and improve the blood circulation of the painful area.

Q. How do you protect your eyes? A. This is a question I often ask my patients during their eye exam. This is an open-ended question for a reason. There are many different ways and reasons in which an individual can protect their eyes. I would like to concentrate on eye protection at home. I think most people that work in industries that are prone to eye injuries already know the importance of safety glasses in the workplace. Now, whether or not they actually use safety eyewear is an entirely different story.
Q. How is the new skin tightening procedure Thermi-Gen™performed? A. This procedure is performed in a couple of ways. Non-invasive facial treatment (external probe): The delicate skin of the face can be effectively treated with the non-invasive external probe. After cleansing the face, a gel is applied and the external Thermi-Gen™ probe is passed over the face in a specific pattern. Patients experience a comfortable warming sensation as the low energy radio frequency is administered. It is adjusted to ensure the desired treatment dose and your comfort is maintained.
The home is actually one of the most common places where eye injuries can occur. Some sources put the home as high as 50-60 percent. Even though eye injuries are common at home, only about one-third of people routinely wear protective eyewear at home. Q. What is the recently FDA approved dermal filler, VolumaTM XC? A. While facial dermal fillers have been on the market for quite some time, with new products continually being approved, there is still some confusion in the general public as to which product to seek out and which providers have the greatest skill with each. Most providers use just about all the products available and which product chosen is based on case at hand. All hyaluronic acid (HA) products currently available are only FDA approved for the correction of moderate to severe facial lines and wrinkles in the mid face, such as smile lines or parenthesis. The upper face is also in great need of volume replacement for the most youthful looking outcome. The FDA has recently approved a new dermal filler Juverderm VolumaTMXC. Its approval is for the temporarily replacement of volume in the upper face and cheeks. This is the first product approved for this location. Other fillers are commonly used in this area, off label, however. A. The most important thing to know is that Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium is on the verge of opening its largest expansion since the aquarium opened in 2008. Dec. 4 was International Cheetah Day. To raise awareness about the decline of cheetah populations and habitats and to support the work to preserve wild cheetahs, Wildlife World announced that it is committing additional funding to the Cheetah Conservation Fund over the next five years for a total of $10,000 to support cheetah conservation. This announcement comes on the eve of Wildlife World opening an all-new, 15-acre safari park scheduled for late January. This newest set of attractions will increase Wildlife World's developed area to more than 75 acres and will eventually feature several brand new species including the greater kudu, baboons, rock hyrax, wildebeest, Watusi cattle, cheetahs and more. It will also have a new African lion habitat and a variety of African birds and other ungulates. Visitors will be able to walk around the safari park as well as take an optional tram ride through several animal exhibits. How to Introduce Your Kids to Winter Sports

inter is here and we are already hearing the buzz for the Winter Olympic Games next February. You might be asking yourself how to get your kids involved in the exciting world of winter sports. Unlike warm-weather sports that children are, exposed to regularly in gym class, summer camp or outdoor games, winter sports can feel more difficult to learn. Here are a few ways you can introduce your child to the world of winter sports this season.
Watch winter sports together Instead of movie night, swap out movies for hockey games, speedskating races, ski competitions, and figure skating performances. Snuggle up with snacks and see how your child enjoys watching the competition. See which sports get your child most excited. Find ways to discuss what they find most interesting about the sport. This can help you get a benchmark for which sport they are naturally drawn to—and stick to it!

to a young runner or swimmer and the trick nature of snowboarding might be appealing to a young skateboarder.
Explore sports during school vacation or a long weekend Make your child’s school vacation all about fun winter activities. Do not explicitly tell them that they are trying out different sports. Instead emphasize to your child that you are learning a fun new activity together. Your child might be open to trying something new when surrounded by familiar and supportive faces. Find open ice skating hours or plan a short trip to a mountain and take a beginner’s class.
Research school-sponsored trips and clubs Once your child starts to show an interest in a sport, support them by finding opportunities for them to practice. Schools will often offer an annual ski trip or start a weekly ski class or something similar. At the same time, some schools might be limited in their sport offerings and not have, for example, a figure skating team. Conduct online research to find a nearby rink and local team that might be open to letting your child participate in a practice or let you watch a practice.
Hire a private coach Book a session with a private coach in a winter sport. Learning proper technique in a supportive environment will give them more confidence to continue with the sport.
Weight Loss Myths that Could Ruin Your Diet

is sufficient. Moderate exercise may work for the 25year-old with a reasonably healthy diet. When we are young, our basal metabolic rate (BMR) rages like a furnace. Unfortunately, our BMR decreases 2 to 3 percent each decade after age 25. That means we have to make up for that decrease with either better eating habits, more exercise or both – if we want to maintain a healthy weight. For those who are older, overweight or obese, a stronger commitment is necessary, including an hour’s worth of exercise at least five times a week.
Gaining weight with age is healthy because it is natural. Metabolism slows with age, causing many to put on the pounds. However, maintaining your Ideal Body Weight (IBW), which factors in height, gender and frame size, will keep you feeling and looking younger if you do not slowly gain weight over time. In addition, casually accepting some weight gain over time can lead to massive weight gain considering our largely sedentary lifestyles and easy availability of quick, fatty meals.
You should drink at least eight glasses of
water per day. Humans possess a sensitive thirst center in a part of the brain called the hypothalamus, which responds to dehydration and tells us to drink water. The amount of water needed for each person varies we don’t need to target a set amount because our thirst will tell us. However, drinking plenty of water may decrease
appetite and water should always be chosen over sugary beverages for satiating thirst.
Diet books keep you slim. “Going on a diet” is one of America’s favorite pastimes. Diets typically entail temporarily altering eating patterns, losing a bit of weight, and then going back to old habits. This has created an entire genre of literature, as well as videos, gear and meal plans that have become a multibilliondollar industry. Really, it all boils down to the I&O (Intake and Output) principle. People who stick to Atkins, South Beach and the Sugar Busters diets lose weight because they limit the intake of calories.
Taking vitamin supplements every day makes you healthy. Dietary supplement sales represent a $20 billion a year business, yet the 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act allows for significantly more lenient rules for supplements than medications from pharmaceutical companies, which are carefully scrutinized by the FDA. Manufacturers are not required to substantiate the supposed benefits of their products. A balanced diet generally provides all required vitamins and minerals needed, with the possible exceptions—vitamin B-12 for those who eat no animal products, folic acid for women of childbearing age and if blood tests indicate deficiency, vitamin B-12 and vitamin D in the elderly. azhealthandliving.com |January 2014

Fruits and veggies happiness studies. Plenty of new research shows that adding more produce to your daily diet can benefit your mental health and sense of wellbeing. In one analysis of the eating habits and moods of 80,000 British adults, researchers at Dartmouth and the University of Warwick found that those who consumed the most fruit and vegetables everyday rated themselves as significantly happier and more satisfied with their lives than those who ate lesser amounts. Research shows that the well-being score for people who ate seven to eight servings of vegetables and fruits per day was consistently three points higher than for those who ate little or none.
More studies. Researchers at the Harvard School of
Public Health concluded from a study of 982 Americans that those who exhibited the most optimistic outlooks on life also had the highest blood levels of carotene. Caroteneis a key antioxidant that is delivered by a colorful of produce: dark spinach, kale, carrots, sweet potatoes and vibrant yellow or orange fruits like peaches, papayas and cantaloupe, among others. “Juicers” should consider starting at a young age. Try gourmet and exotic juice blends, or even plant-based ingredients you simply have not yet considered, some of which may include butternut squash, one-inch ginger chunks, beets with leaves and stems, Brussels sprouts and fennel bulbs with fronds. Juicing is not about just using common fruit ingredients – spice it up and experiment with healthy vegetables; it works!
An exotic example. A fennel-watercress-cucumber
blend juice is an excellent way to mix up your typical cocktail. It includes one handful of watercress; one dark green lettuce leaf; one cucumber, peeled if not organic; ½fennel bulb and fronds; one lemon, peeled if not organic. Cut produce to fit your juicer’s feed tube. Wrap watercress in lettuce leaf and push through the juicer slowly. Juice all remaining ingredients. Drink immediately; this portion serves one.
Contamination in Produce What You Should Know By MS
T
he demand for fresh produce has increased in recent years as more people are turning to fresh fruits and vegetables for their nutritional value. That increase in demand has forced many suppliers to import more produce from other countries, which could be putting consumers' health at risk. Although the United States and Canada may have stringent standards for produce, many other countries do not. Less stringent regulations overseas can result in irrigation water carrying sewage, pollutants and parasites to crops and herbicides and pesticides may be used in abundance in foreign countries where such usage is subject to little, if any, oversight. Fewer regulations means some farms pay more attention to profit than to the purity and safety of crops. The Pure Food Growers of America states that the average American consumes more than 10 pounds of insecticides and herbicides every year from produce. Many of these substances are proven carcinogens. Thoroughly washing and soaking fresh produce is the key to removing potential hazards from foods. Organic fruits and vegetables may be less risky, but even organic foods are susceptible to contamination because of potentially unsafe handling practices. All produce should be washed before eaten. Before cleaning produce, stock up on a few supplies. You will need a large plastic bowl, some apple cider vinegar or baking soda and a produce brush. Add enough cool water to cover the produce you will be washing. Either add three tablespoons per gallon of water of the vinegar to the bowl or sprinkle about three tablespoons of the baking soda into the water. It is best not to mix both the vinegar and the baking soda, or you may end up with a foaming, overflowing concoction thanks to the chemical reaction that occurs when vinegar mixes with baking soda. Add the vegetables or fruit to the treated water and allow it to soak for around 10 minutes. Use a vegetable brush to thoroughly scrub the produce. Some foods, like celery and lettuce, have dirt or bugs trapped in their ribs and folds. Soaking and scrubbing can dislodge any bugs. Instead of washing the entire head at once, wash lettuce leaves as they are used to retain the vitamins and minerals. After rinsing the produce, allow to dry before eating. A salad spinner can help dry lettuce and cabbage leaves so they are not soggy.

oday, beautiful Kerry Washington is a household name due to a winning performance in the popular TV show, Scandal—her roles alongside famous actors, being listed as number two on People’s Most Beautiful People this year—and now creative consultant for Neutrogena! That was always a little scary to me. What I love about acting is the craft of becoming different people and telling a story,” Washington shares in an interview with Lucky magazine. Nonetheless, Washington is more than capable of talking beauty products. “I live and work in makeup so I have a perspective on how a lip color works after eight hours on the set or an hour on the red carpet,” she says to ETOnline. Washington tells Women’s Health magazine that she credits Pilates for teaching her body awareness, reducing stress and helping her with body image issues. “I've never met anybody who's taken Pilates and doesn't understand their own body better afterward,” she says. “As women, we live in this culture where it's like, 'You have to fix this.' Pilates has allowed me to be focused on my appearance and my health in ways that are not abusive or critical.”

Aside from being active, Washington disciplines her foodie self by following a healthy diet. “I watch what I eat, I do. My body is really sensitive so I'm very conscious of what I put in my mouth,” she said to People magazine in 2007. “I try, for the most part, to eat things that are going to make me feel better, not worse.”

Many women have a love-hate relationship with the weight machine. Washington, however, chooses not to obsess over it. “If the number is a number you don't want it to be, then you're miserable, and if it's a number you want it to be, you spend the rest of the day thinking, 'Oh, I should never eat again so the number stays where it is, right?' It's just better that I don't get on the scales,” she tells The Guardian. Whenever time allows it, according to People, Washington shops at local farmers markets, but she might also stop by a local bakery to fulfill her sweet-tooth cravings. Diet Men and women need fewer calories as they age. For example, men and women in their 40s may need as many as 200 calories more per day than they will when they reach their 50s. Counting calories might seem difficult, for those who don't think they can count calories can try to eat more low-calorie foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Consuming fewer calories often requires changing dietary habits, with regard to not only what you are eating but also how you are eating and even how you shop for food. Men and women used to dining out for lunch every day can start bringing their own lunches to gain greater control of daily caloric intake. For those who find they are frequently too exhausted to cook each night, prepare meals in advance to have healthy, homemade meals waiting instead of always 62

When coupled with a healthy, low-calorie diet, routine exercise can help men and women over 50 shed extra weight and keep the weight off once it is gone. According to the CDC, older adults need at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking, every week and muscle-strengthening activities on two more days a week. These musclestrengthening activities should work all the major muscle groups, including the legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms. Muscle-strengthening activities include lifting weights, working out with resistance bands, exercise such as push-ups and sit-ups that use body weight for resistance and yoga. Even gardening that involves digging and shoveling can be considered a musclestrengthening activity.
