"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.

"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp

Look Great This Summer! We can all agree sagging skin is a sure sign of aging, especially when it’s concentrated around the jaw line, neck and eyes. Now there is a new generation skin-tightening device leading the way in the fight against sagging jowls, turkey necks, and tired eyes. is a non-surgical treatment designed to lift, tighten and firm the skin of the face and neck. It is drastically different in its tightening and lifting ability because it not only tightens skin, but also the deep muscular layers underneath. The same foundational layers typically addressed in a surgical face-lift.

Before

drives sound waves into skin and deeper support structures that tighten existing collagen, and stimulate more collagen growth over the next three to six months. This is the first non-surgical device to combine focused ultrasound energy that visualizes the area to be treated then accurately deliver pinpoint energy to multiple structural layers of collagen. is the first ultrasound technology to receive FDA approval for a non-surgical brow, jowl and neck lift. It is used on areas of the face and neck that address sagging of the cheek, jawline, marionette lines, chin as well as brows and eyelids. Single areas may be treated or full face and neck for a more complete lift. A visible lift is commonly seen immediately following the procedure, with optimal results occurring over three to six months. There are no pre or post treatment restrictions. No down time, surgery, incisions, injections or scars, and it’s done in thirty to sixty minutes per area. Technology is providing amazing ways to safely look your best.

Together We Can Make a Difference...

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. ~Galatians 5:1 Welcome to our July issue. As we celebrate this Independence Day, let us also not forget to give thanks for our eternal liberty that we find in God. Here are a few Bible verses to encourage the celebration of freedom, both spiritual and physical this holiday.

1 Peter 2:15-16 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.

2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

Psalm 119:44-45 So shall I keep thy law continually for ever and ever. And I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts.

Isaiah 61:1-2 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

Romans 6:17-18 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

John 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

Romans 8:19-21 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Psalm 119:32 I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart

Romans 8:1-2 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. Until next time, Have a blessed and safe holiday!

God Bless You for Your Support! Here to serve,

A Leadership Development Company with Heart U & Improved instills a sense of purpose and passion

“I’m passionate about passion,” says Jodi Low, the founder of local leadership development company U & Improved. “The concept of passion reverberates through everything we do as a business. Whether we’re training entrepreneurs or mid-level managers, we instill a sense of purpose and passion for what they do and how they contribute. This is how we believe companies will survive the current economy—by caring for and developing their people.” A Valley resident since the age of 5, Low has been a lifelong student of leadership development. While she peppered her early career in sales and marketing with various self-development classes, she recognized that the market was missing a training model with sustainability and what she calls “stick-to-it-iv-ness.” “I’d attend a personal or professional seminar and get a charge or a spark of an idea from it,” she explains. “But with no follow-up and no next step, I’d move on to the next workshop or pick up a new book. I was always looking out for the one that stuck.” She found it in 2008. That was the year she launched U & Improved as a different kind of leadership development company. Her business model was formulated around the philosophy that, to stretch beyond your current capabilities and become a more confident communicator and role model to others, you had to step outside your comfort zone and practice in a safe environment. And you need a supportive team of other like-minded people to get you there. “We develop a person’s leadership skills from the inside out,” she says, explaining that most people already have the potential and simply need the expert guidance, handson practice and coaching to use these skills in a meaningful and effective way. “And no, we don’t have our students dredge up painful issues from their past. That’s not our thing at all. We start from where people are when they set foot in our classroom and give them the tools to move forward toward where they want to be—in their careers, in their lives.” She refers to U & Improved’s unique premise as “heartbased leadership,” because, in contrast to many other development and training organizations, their trainers guide students toward aligning their head and heart. 14 July 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

“And our training team … whew, they are simply the best in the industry,” she adds. U & Improved’s core classes are two and a half days of intensive, experiential training. Students are actively engaged in a series of processes designed to shed powerless thinking and shift into a positive mindset. The company’s core classes, U the Leader and U the Communicator, give students firsthand experience and tools to immediately lead and communicate with confidence in all areas of their lives. The advanced leadership classes, U the Warrior and U the Samurai, incorporate outdoor challenges for people seeking to tap further into their inner strength and take actionable steps toward a life of purpose and passion. In 2014, the company launched a teen leadership program to give teens the confidence, self-esteem, communication skills, focus and self-awareness to successfully transition into adulthood. As a result of the program, the company launched a nonprofit arm in 2016, U & Improved Leadership Foundation, to provide scholarships to teens that otherwise could not afford the weekend-long class. Low’s success in the leadership development arena has been overwhelming, and she has been recognized with numerous awards for her dedication, including the Sterling Award by the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce and the Stevie Award for Female Entrepreneur of the Year, among others. While leading her internal management and training teams, Low is also a dynamic speaker, corporate trainer and expert contributor within the personal and professional development space. Along with that, she’s the leader of her personal team, two active young daughters. Photo Courtesy of U & Improved

An African Crested Porcupine, the Second Largest Rodent in the World at Wildlife World By Kristy Morcom

The African Crested Porcupine is the second largest rodent in the world. Their quills are modified hairs made of keratin, which is the same thing that our hair and fingernails are made of. Contrary to popular belief, this porcupine does not 'shoot' their quills, but instead shakes their hollow tail quills to make a rattling sound in attempt to scare off predators. If that is unsuccessful, the porcupine with then run backward into the predator, at which time the predator will get the "point" and leave the porcupine alone! Southwest Kids’ Cancer Foundation Local nonprofit preserves and advances Arizona Camp Sunrise and Sidekicks

Just a little over three years ago, Arizona Camp Sunrise and Sidekicks was at a crossroads in its history. Founded in 1983, Arizona’s first children’s oncology camp located outside of Payson learned that the very lifeblood of its funding source, which had been provided by the American Cancer Society up until that point, would no longer be available. A passionate group of camp supporters united in 2013 to found the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Southwest Kids’ Cancer Foundation. As the fundraising arm of Arizona Camp Sunrise and Sidekicks, children in Arizona and in the Southwest will continue to experience the fun and excitement of camp and its associated programs. Arizona Camp Sunrise and Sidekicks offers a week of summer camp to children in Arizona and the Southwest who are battling or surviving cancer. There is also a week of summer camp for the siblings of those children and there are various exciting programs and excursions in which the children can participate throughout the year. The camp experiences and its programs are provided free of charge to the families. Those who attend camp and take part in its programs are considered part of the Arizona Camp Sunrise and Sidekicks “campily.” “Arizona Camp Sunrise and Sidekicks gives kids with cancer a chance to just be a kid, not the kid with cancer. When they come to camp, they are with others who understand what they are going through. It is a safe place; a place where they are normal,” says Executive Director of Arizona Camp Sunrise and Sidekicks and board member of Southwest Kids’ Cancer Foundation Barb Nicholas.

Initially, there were 23 cancer patients and eight staff members in the White Mountains for the inaugural camp in 1983. Staff and children slept in tents and everyone assisted with cooking duties. In 1985, the camp moved to the R-C Scout Ranch, south of Payson. Thanks to the generous support of many, facilities now include seven cabins, a dining hall with a kitchen, and a health center. Arizona Camp Sunrise and Sidekicks features nurses and doctors available around the clock to the campers. Some of the fun things to do at camp include indoor and outdoor games, craft classes, archery, fishing, horseback riding, swimming, campfires and more. One of the camp highlights is the “Jell-O® War” where kids get sticky and gooey as they share in their dislike of Jell-O® that is often given to them when they are undergoing treatment in the hospital. No camper is safe from the onslaught of the gelatinous substance, which is flung in every direction. Campers attending Arizona Camp Sunrise and Sidekicks often become lifelong friends and, as children get older, some return to the camp as volunteer staff. “This camp is incredibly special. Volunteers plan for summer camp for months. They want camp to be a special experience for each child. The dedication I see is absolutely amazing,” Nicholas explains. The legacy of camp rests on the shoulders of Southwest Kids’ Cancer Foundation.

The “Dreams of Summer” annual gala thrown by Southwest Kids’ Cancer Foundation now serves as Arizona Camp Sunrise and Sidekicks primary fundraiser. Monies raised by the nonprofit help to fulfill the dreams of the children who attend camp and enjoy its programs each year by providing vital dollars to the camp. There are also many ways the public can get involved with helping to support the camp. Volunteers are needed for various tasks during summer camp and throughout the year.

Donating to the camp is easy. Through the Amazon Smile program, designate Southwest Kids’ Cancer Foundation as the recipient of a donation made to the nonprofit when you make your regular purchases through Amazon.com. You may also designate Southwest Kids’ Cancer Foundation on your Fry’s Community Rewards using your Fry’s V.I.P. Card.

Volunteers Needed to Transport Cancer Patients to Treatments By Brittany Conklin An estimated 32,510 Arizonans will learn they have cancer this year and, for many, getting to treatment will be their greatest concern. The American Cancer Society Road To Recovery program provides free transportation for cancer patients who do not have access to a vehicle, a ride to treatment, or who are unable to drive themselves. Volunteer drivers are critically needed in Phoenix so that patients can get to the cancer-related treatments they need. Anyone 18 years of age or older with a valid driver’s license, a safe and reliable vehicle, proof of automobile insurance, a good driving history, and willingness to save lives is qualified to be a Road To Recovery volunteer. The American Cancer Society provides free training and volunteers make their own schedules and can commit as many or as few hours as possible. Natural Ways to Reduce Lyme Disease Risk The great outdoors can be a wonder to behold. Parks, nature preserves, or even some time spent in the backyard can help men, women and children reconnect with nature. While there is plenty to enjoy about the great outdoors, certain hazards are lurking. Ticks can be both a nuisance and a danger, potentially contributing to illnesses like Lyme disease. Recognizing the dangers of ticks and how to avoid tick bites can help people reduce their risk for contracting Lyme disease. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that, after hatching from eggs, ticks must eat blood at every stage to survive. It can take up to three years for a tick to complete its full life cycle, meaning it needs quite a few hosts to feed on. Ticks are part of the arachnid family, but unlike spiders, ticks attach to the skin of an animal and suck its blood. Ticks can be found just about anywhere, but they tend to gravitate toward wooded areas or tall grasses, which offer them protection and good vantage points to find an animal host. Dog owners have no doubt encountered ticks in their lifetimes, as ticks are routine problems for dogs that are not properly protected. But ticks also prey on humans. Ticks are small and their bites are relatively painless, which can make it difficult for people to detect when they have been bitten. Many tick bites are harmless and do not require treatment. However, if bitten by a tick that is carrying Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever, people may need to take an antibiotic to prevent any lasting health effects. As a result, people should always visit a doctor when bitten by a tick. Pesticide repellants are some of the more effective and well-known methods to prevent tick bites and subsequent side effects. Many repellants can be used without negative side effects, but those who prefer to go a more natural route can take the following precautionary measures.

Watch habitats. Avoid grassy, wooded and brushy areas. Ticks also prefer humid conditions.

Stick to trails. Stay on trails when hiking or walking to avoid brushing up against areas where ticks may be hiding out.

Wear proper clothing. Light-colored clothing makes it 26 July 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

easier to spot ticks that may have made their way onto a person. Tuck pants into socks, as ticks tend to climb onto hosts from the ground up. Bare ankles provide easy access.

Protect hair and heads. Wear a hat and/or keep long hair contained so that it isn't an attractive hiding spot for ticks.

Shower immediately. After coming in from areas known for ticks, shower and launder clothing immediately. While showering, do a spot inspection looking for ticks on your body. Remember to look in hidden areas like under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, on the back of the knees, in and around the hair, between the legs and around the waist. Clean up the yard. Make your yard less habitable to ticks by mowing the grass regularly and removing leaf litter and trim shrubs. Also, use wood chips or gravel to serve as a barrier between lawns and wooded areas of the property.

Use natural oils. Ticks may not like the smell of garlic, lemon, eucalyptus, lavender and rosemary, among others. Dotting your body with these infused oils may make you less attractive to ticks.

Is Your Child Ready for Contact Lenses? By MS

Contact lenses are a viable option for many people who require vision correction. Some find them more convenient than eyeglasses, and people who wear contact lenses are less likely to lose them or leave them behind than they are with traditional eyeglasses. Others feel contacts are more comfortable to wear and reduce the propensity for any blind spots in peripheral vision. While contacts are appropriate for many people, there are some limitations depending on the particular vision problem and age. According to a study titled "Children & Contact Lenses" conducted by the American Optometric Association Research and Information Center in conjunction with the Sports Vision Section and Contact Lens and Cornea Section of AOA, with support from VISTAKONÂŽ, a division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc., more than half (51 percent) of optometrists feel it is appropriate to introduce children to soft contact lenses between the ages of 10 and 12 years old, while nearly one in four (23 percent) feel 13 to 14 years old is a suitable age for a child to begin wearing contact lenses. The younger the child is, the lower the percentage of eye doctors who feel it is appropriate to introduce lenses. Age alone may not be a reference for the appropriateness of contact lenses. Parents and eye doctors may take maturity into consideration as well. Contact lenses require a greater level of care than glasses, and parents should factor in that maintenance when deciding if their children should try contact lenses or stick with traditional eyeglasses. Younger children also may not be as dexterous as older contact lens wearers, making it challenging for them to insert and remove contacts safely and properly. While there are no firm rules regarding the right age to begin wearing contact lenses, parents can consider their children's maturity levels and their eye doctor's recommendations before making a final decision. The Causes of Hiccups & How to Remedy Them Hiccups may not be a medical emergency, but they certainly can be a nuisance. Also known as, "singultus," hiccups can come out of nowhere and last for quite some time. An effective way to alleviate hiccups has proven elusive to many, forcing many people to ponder if they can be prevented. According to the resource Kids Health, the funny noises and other annoying ticks associated with hiccups can be blamed in part on the diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of the chest. When the diaphragm is working correctly, it helps to regulate breathing. In a contracted position, the diaphragm lets air into the lungs. When the diaphragm relaxes, the lungs release carbon dioxide. Hiccups occur when the diaphragm starts contracting erratically and out of rhythm. These spasms can cause the larynx and vocal cords to close suddenly, resulting in a sharp intake of air and the hiccup chirp that occurs thereafter. Hiccups can stop and start abruptly, for no reason at all. But certain things may contribute to hiccups. These include: · Eating spicy food · Drinking carbonated beverages · Sudden changes in air temperature · Excitement or emotional stress

like multiple sclerosis or even brain injury. Hiccups also may last longer due to overuse of tobacco or alcohol. Males tend to be more prone to hiccups than females.

· Swallowing too much air · Overeating Many cases of hiccups last only a few minutes, but for some people hiccups can last a while longer. Persistent hiccups are caused by injury or irritation to the nerves that control the movement of the diaphragm. Sometimes this results from acid reflux, degenerative nerve diseases, 28 July 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

While there are a number of ways to treat hiccups, there is no definitive cure. Holding one's breath or putting sugar under the tongue are some of the more popular remedies. Hiccups are largely a nuisance and not a medical emergency. However, knowing how to get them under control can be a relief.

How to Alleviate Eustachian Tube Problems By MS

Ear problems come and go, and some may be the result of seasonal allergies or the accumulation of wax or water inside the ear canal. But some ear problems originate deeper within the anatomy of the ear, in an area called the Eustachian tube. Dysfunction or clogging of the Eustachian tube can create different symptoms and problems that will need to be addressed. Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, says the Eustachian tube is a narrow tube that connects the middle ear to the back of the nose. Normally, this tube opens with every swallow or yawn to act as a pressure-equalizing valve for the middle ear. It also serves to drain the mucus produced by the lining of the middle ear. At times, the tube can get blocked, causing a negative pressure that draws the eardrum inward. When this occurs, dull or muffled hearing is sometimes evident, and individuals may feel pain and pressure. Colds, sinus trouble, allergies, and other ailments can contribute to Eustachian tube dysfunction. The pressure change within the ear as well as a buildup of mucus can lead to trouble and a visit to a doctor. In many cases, Eustachian tubes will become clear again on their own. However, some doctors will prescribe a decongestant nasal spray to help the process along. If an ear infection is suspected, antibiotics may be prescribed. Various all-natural remedies, such as holding one's nose and blowing to try to clear the congestion, can be attempted as well. Those suffering from Eustachian tube congestion should consult their physicians to develop courses of treatment. azhealthandliving.com |July 2016

Strategies to Get Back in a Good Mood Adults know that life has its ups and downs. While it's important not to get too down when things don't go as planned, no one is immune to bad moods. But just because bad moods are a fact of life, that does not mean they cannot be combatted. While bad moods are nothing to get too worried about, if such moods overstay their welcome, speak with a physician. According to the World Health Organization, depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the world, affecting an estimated 350 million people across the globe. There are various types of depression, and no two people are affected in the same way. That's an important distinction, as those who know someone with a history of depression may not recognize signs of depression in themselves if those symptoms don't mimic the signs they're familiar with. But bad moods are not always indicative of depression. In those instances when a bad mood is simply a bad mood, you can try a handful of strategies to get back in a good mood. Exercise. Numerous studies have shown that exercises enhances mood. Anxieties about a life event or stress at work are two common contributors to bad moods. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, studies have shown that exercise can elevate mood and do so quickly, with some researchers suggesting that a 10-minute walk can be just as effective at relieving anxiety as a 45-minute workout. Studies have also shown that exercise can help combat stress by reducing fatigue, improving alertness, concentration and enhancing overall cognitive function.

Ignore alcohol or limit your consumption. Many people feel an alcoholic beverage relaxes them, and feeling relaxed can help improve mood. That initial feeling of relaxation is the result of alcohol affecting the chemical balance of the brain by depressing the part of the brain that governs inhibition. That's why alcohol is categorized as a depressant. While that initial drink may 30 July 2016| azhealthandliving.com

feel like you're on the way to a better mood, as alcohol begins circulating in the body, your stress levels may actually increase, and your bad mood may even intensify. If you find yourself in a bad mood, resist turning to alcohol to improve mood, and limit your alcohol intake to a single drink during those times when you're in a bad mood.

Volunteer to help others. While more research is necessary before a definitive connection between volunteering and improved mental health can be established, researchers in England analyzed data from 40 published papers and found a link between volunteering and lower levels of depression. The review also found that volunteers reported increased life satisfaction and enhanced well-being. Periodic bad moods are a part of life, but there are ways to limit their lifespan and get back to feeling good as quickly as possible.

Tame Wedding Day Nerves By MS

When couples tie the knot, many changes are in store, many compromises will be made, and many lasting memories will be created. But in the weeks and months before their big days, couples can easily get caught up in the whirlwind of wedding planning, never taking inventory of their feelings until their wedding days have arrived. Come their wedding days, couples should not be surprised if some nerves set in. A survey from the anxiety self-help resource The Fear Source indicated 71 percent of bridesto-be suffered from some type of nerves during the leadup to their weddings. Ninety-two percent of brides experienced nerves on the day of the wedding or the evening before, while 66 percent reported that it affected their daily lives prior to their weddings or hampered their performance and enjoyment during the day itself. According to Psych Central, a modern online voice for mental health information, emotional support and advocacy, pre-wedding jitters are common and can be the subconscious telling a person that something needs to be remedied. Wedding nerves do not mean a wedding is doomed; it just means certain issues may need to be worked through. The following are some ways to tame wedding day nerves.

Keep an open dialogue. Speak with your future spouse about the things that may be causing your anxiety. Maybe you have doubts on financial choices or where you will be living after the wedding. Communicating openly and honestly is one of the foundations of a strong relationship.

Slow down and breathe. Wedding planning involves making many decisions, and sometimes couples move at breakneck speeds. Make slowing down a priority. Try to enjoy a quiet dinner with just the two of you. When enjoying peaceful moments, take deep breaths, which can be calming and revitalizing. If need be, consider signing up for a yoga or tai chi class to force you to slow down.

Address performance anxiety. It's easy to build up the big day in your mind and hope that everything goes according to plan. But it's impossible to plan for each and every outcome on your wedding day. Focus on everything that can go right, rather than worrying about what might

go wrong. Also, realize that your guests are your friends and family members who will be forgiving of any hiccups along the way. You're bound to recover gracefully from any mishaps.

Work on confidence. Wedding fears may stem from inadequate self-confidence. Give yourself a pep talk and surround yourself with positive people. Keep the worrywarts at arms' length for the time being.

Recruit more help. Weddings are huge undertakings, so it's no surprise that couples sometimes feel overwhelmed. Ask reliable relatives or friends to double-check all of the last-minute details. This way you don't feel it is all on your shoulders. Wedding day nerves are to be expected and often have little to do with the decision to get married. Planning such a big event can be nerve-wracking, but there are ways to combat any anxiety that builds up as the big day draws near. azhealthandliving.com | July 2016

Q. How do I know if I have gallstones and if medical treatment is necessary?

Q. Should my kids get eye exams before starting or returning to school?

A. The gallbladder is a storage place for bile A. With the summer rapidly ending, it is which is a liquid produced in the liver. After eating fats, as your body begins the digestive process, your gallbladder contracts and pushes the stored bile into the common bile duct, which brings the liquid to your small intestine to aid digestion. Gallstones form when the liquid bile hardens and changes to hard pieces of stone-like material, which then can block the gallbladder from emptying or cause a blockage within the common bile duct causing symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, or what is often called a gallbladder attack.

Other symptoms may include constant heartburn, abdominal pain and bloating after you eat, or pain radiating to your back or right shoulder. Some people will experience fever, chills, yellowing of the skin and eyes, dark color urine and gray color stools. Severe pain attacks or constant pain that interferes with your daily life may mean that surgery is the best option. There are now very minimally invasive surgical procedures available for gallbladder removal. These methods typically mean you will not have to stay in the hospital overnight, you will recover quicker, and you will have little to no scarring. It is critical to seek medical treatment to ensure the gallbladder is removed before it ruptures.

time to make those back-to-school preparations. The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends an eye exam before heading back to school for those who have never had one or those who have not had an eye exam in two years. Good vision is an integral part of the learning process and should be evaluated to allow a child their best chance of academic success. Approximately 86 percent of children start school never having an eye examination.

There is a very strong correlation between vision and learning. A majority of learning comes through the eyes. It is important to note that good vision is not only that a child can see 20/20, but also that the eyes have good visual function. That means are the eyes working properly and are looking at the same place at the same time. Many children with “learning difficulties” have 20/20 vision in each eye, what they lack is the ability of the eyes to working well together. Parents and teachers should be aware of a few things, other than blurred vision that may indicate a visual problem. Some of the most common things are: • Headaches during or after homework • Needing a finger to maintain their place when reading • Easily loses place when reading • Squinting • Rubbing eyes to help keep focus • Avoids near tasks, such as reading and computer work

Q. Can sleep-disordered breathing cause inability to concentrate in children? A. Sleep-disordered breathing in children can result from swollen tonsils and/or adenoids, malocclusion (misalignment of the teeth) or swollen nasal passages. Children who suffer from sleep-disordered breathing do not sleep well at night. Often, they cannot enter REM sleep because they are unable to get into a deep sleep without their body forcing them awake when their airway becomes obstructed. As the body drifts to sleep, the airway relaxes. A healthy airway should not relax, but if the child has swollen tonsils or nasal problems, this relaxation can obstruct the airway and breathing causing the brain to wake up the body, resulting in excessive tiredness, and decreased concentration. Sleep-disordered breathing in children may manifest as strange positions while sleeping (such as hanging their head off the edge of the bed or propping it up on pillows in order to be in the right position to breathe), overall crabbiness, headaches, difficulty waking, and/or bedwetting. It may also manifest itself as trouble concentrating— sometimes-serious conditions like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). However, not every child who has trouble concentrating is automatically suffering from ADHD. Trouble concentrating can be caused by everything from immaturity to a short attention span. Nevertheless, diagnoses of ADHD have risen exponentially in the last few years, as has the prescription of such drugs as Ritalin.

If your child experiences any of these have them evaluated by your optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Sleep-disordered breathing is just another possibility to look at when trying to find the underlying cause of your child’s inability to concentrate.

As a common type of arthritis, osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the leading causes for knee pain. are actively seeking to get curves in all the A. We all want beautiful white smiles and the Also known as degenerative joint disease, OA is the degenerative change of the cartilage between the two knee bones. Osteoarthritis commonly starts because of the aging process. The cartilage loses or wears away. Without the cushion and support of the cartilage, two bones rub each other. Common symptoms are usually pain, swelling and stiffness; and pain is worse with movement and weight bearing. Bone spurs may form around the knee joint. Bone spurs pinch the surrounding nerves or put pressure on the muscles and ligaments. Although many think osteoarthritis is mainly from the aging process, clinical resources indicate several common factors contribute to knee pain. The pain and stiffness affect daily activity, such as restricted joint motion, difficulty bearing weight when standing, difficulty stepping up and down stairs, and sometimes pain increases during mild activity and is gone while resting. According to principles of Oriental medicine and clinical studies, knee osteoarthritis pain belongs to a category of conditions or symptoms called “obstructive syndrome.” Meridians around the knee joint and related body regions are blocked by pathogenic cold, wind, heat and dampness. Circulation and body innate flow through the knee joint are out of balance, which leads to degenerated change of the knee joint, that causes not enough nutrition and blood to reach the surrounding muscle tendons and ligament. Obstruction of the circulation and energy flow causes pain, stiffness, swelling and limited motion of the knee.

right places, and the buttocks are no exception.

What is this trendy plastic surgery procedure anyway? Brazilian Butt Lift is the nickname for transferring fat from other parts of the body and placing it in the buttocks. Using liposuction, the surgeon will harvest fat from areas of your body like the abdomen, waist, and hips to create a smaller midsection. From there, the surgeon will inject your fat into areas of the buttocks that are flat or where more projection is desired. Brazilian Butt Lift can turn your stubborn areas of unwanted fat into the hourglass figure many patients desire. It is important to understand that not all forms of liposuction can be used in the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure. Liposuction procedures that destroy fat cells cannot be used. For example, laser assisted liposuction melts and destroys fat cells. Fat cells need to be alive to have a successful outcome when transferred. Traditional liposuction and Tickle Liposuction are commonly used for the Brazilian Butt Lift because the fat cells are not destroyed in the fat harvesting process. A plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery should be the only surgeon to trust with this trendy plastic surgery procedure. It is also important to have an in-office consultation and physical exam to determine if you are a candidate.

toothpaste aisle is packed with so many options that claim they will brighten up your teeth. The reality is they all have whitening agents but they might not be the best kind for your smile. The first thing to know is if you have any lingering cavities or haven’t been to the dentist in a while, whitening strip are not going to be your best friend. Because whitening agents are designed to break down stains they may also contribute to the breakdown of your tooth’s integrity. Hit the dentist and get a consultation and cleaning. This way you won’t do any harm to your teeth from the get-go. While you’re at the office ask them about what kind of whitening products they offer and if they are right for your teeth. Many offices offer Zoom! Whitening, Lumibrite, and other treatments that can be done in the office or they might have options for you to take home. The benefit of doing whitening with your dentist is that they can gauge the concentration and time that the whitening needs to be applied for your teeth. Over bleaching your teeth can cause speckling and degrade your oral health. Take home treatments from your dentist can also be done with custom made trays that will fit your teeth perfectly. These options are the most effective and reliable for whitening results.

The over the counter options might work for you but we encourage you to get your teeth checked first to make sure there isn’t any decay present. Be careful to read and follow all directions and make sure not to leave the strips on longer than recommended. Hopefully you will be happy with the results and smile with confidence. – Dr. Kim Litchfield Dental Care 623.738.3027

Q. Is there a cure for spinal disc problems? Q. Why shouldn’t I buy my hearing Q. What causes teen acne, and what aids from a big box store? are the treatment options? A. Hope is on the horizon. Pauza disc treatment (PDT) is done by injecting natural substances found in our bloodstream that “seal” the disc. The disc, once sealed, can regain the disc height once lost. Through a tremendous amount of research, scientists have now figured out the reason we get disc degeneration, herniations, bulging etc. is due to the outer shell (the annulus fibrosus) becoming weak and leaking of fluid from the nucleus fibrosus (the inside of the disc) starts to occur. This causes a chemical reaction that leads to inflammation around the disc and nerves. Most “sciatic” pain are actually a chemical “sciatica” and not due to direct compression of the nerve root.

years is hormonal fluctuations associated with puberty, an increase in oil production, allowing for bacterial proliferate and the resulting decrease in the exfoliating process leading to clogged pores. The rambunctious bacterial growth in the oil gland then stimulates the body to mount an immune response creating redness, inflammation and pus causing the dreaded pimple. Topical and oral treatments are aimed at these factors. When treating teen acne it is important to consider medical intervention as quickly as possible, to prevent worsening and permanent scarring.

A healthy skin care regimen for teens focuses on decreasing oil, exfoliating the skin, moisturizing and decreasing inflammation and bacteria. The best products for this are those that contain Retin-A, benzoyl peroxide and salicylic/glycolic acid. Moisturizers with antiinflammatory agents such as polyphenols, (green tea extracts) or medical grade products are best as they are non-comedogenic (free of heavy oils) and most will have acne-fighting botanicals with anti-inflammatory agents. Other medical interventions may be helpful, such as chemical peels, acne facials, Blu-U light treatments, lasers and alternatives to Accutane, such as Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT). Assessing internal factors is also key to improvement. With the combination of topical and in-office treatments, teen acne can be managed and long-term effects may be avoided. If scarring has already occurred then laser treatments are extremely beneficial at minimizing the depth and severity of the scarring. Earlier intervention is best since the more youthful collagen cells can respond better to laser stimulation, thus providing the best outcome of eliminating the scars appearance.

Q. Why is it so important to wear sunglasses? How do I know I am getting the best protection for my eyes? A. Protecting your eyes is no different than the need to protect your skin from harmful UV radiation, especially in Arizona. UV radiation has been shown to significantly contribute to a number of ocular complications, including cataracts, macular degeneration, basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. The effects of UV radiation on the eye progress over time and begin in childhood. Children’s eyes transmit more UV radiation than adult eyes, allowing for higher levels of radiation to reach the lens and the retina. The new Eye-Sun Protection Factor (E-SPF) label for sunglasses is a way to determine ultraviolet protection. The new label, which is similar to an SPF label commonly found on sunscreen bottles, provides more detailed protection information than the more common “100 percent UVA/UVB” eyewear labels. Look for the new E-SPF label when purchasing glasses. The new label takes into account the transmittance of UV through the lens as well as the reflectance of UV off the back surface of the lens, which can represent 50 percent of all UV received in the eye. Q. Can wheatgrass alleviate anemia? A. The definition of Anemia is the lack of

red blood cells in the blood stream. Red blood cells perform the function of carrying oxygen to all of the body's organs. The most common cause of anemia is malnutrition or the lack of nutrition in the food we eat. Symptoms may include fatigue, skin pallor, shortness of breath, lightheadedness and dizziness. Dr. Hans Fischer and a group of associates won a Nobel Prize for their red blood cell research. The scientists discovered that human blood closely resembles chlorophyll on the molecular level. Most people are unaware of the fact that anemia can be eliminated by the intake of wheatgrass juicealso known as "green blood". According to Dr. Bernard Jensen, wheatgrass is superior to all other blood builders. With all its other nutritional benefits, wheatgrass contains 70 percent chlorophyll, and many active compounds that help cleanse the blood and eliminate toxins. The chlorophyll in the wheatgrass plant is easily absorbed into the blood and when taken on an empty stomach, assimilates into your body within 20 minutes. Doctors at Temple University in Philadelphia discovered that the green drink was able to thicken and strengthen cell walls. Wheatgrass stimulates tissue growth cell regeneration and better blood circulation.

Q. Is there anything I can do to help with my parent’s depression, once medications and other therapies have not proven effective? A. beneficiaries with limited income. There are three main programs and each has different income eligibility requirements.

1. Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB): Pays Medicare Parts A & B monthly premiums, deductibles, co-insurance and co-pays. QMB designation eliminates all-out-of-pocket costs for Medicare covered services provided by physicians who participate in Medicare or Medicaid or provide services through a Medicare Advantage Plan’s network. Some insurance carriers offer “Special Needs Plans” designed specifically for those who qualify for QMB. In addition to medically necessary services many of these plans offer extra’s like dental, vision and hearing benefits. Some also offer a way to receive common over-the-counter items at no cost. 2. Specified Low-income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB): This designation pays for Medicare’s Part B premium. Qualifying income limits are higher than those who qualify for QMB. 3. Qualifying Individual (QI): These programs will also pay the Part B premium; income requirements are slightly higher than those with SLMB. All three programs are considered MSP’s and all three are provided by the state for Medicare beneficiaries with limited income and resources. All MSP programs allow Medicare beneficiaries to have “open enrollment” year around meaning plan changes can be made anytime throughout the year with no restrictions.

Experiences like this cannot be duplicated. At Wildlife World we appreciate the importance of animal interactions when it comes to inspiring our future generations to conserve and protect the world around us.

Beneficiaries who qualify for an MSP will automatically get “Extra Help” the federal program that helps pay most Medicare prescription drug (Part D) plan costs.

Should Schools Reinforce Cursive Writing Skills? Cursive writing lessons are disappearing from many schools. How do you feel about this change? Cursive writing lessons were once mandatory in schools. Many adults can remember cursive writing lessons on lined paper and time spent practicing this aesthetically appealing style of writing. But thanks to technology and a growing reliance on computers to complete school assignments, handwriting skills are no longer stressed as much as they once were. In fact, some children never receive cursive writing instruction. The absence of cursive writing lessons has led to a heated debate. Some people feel cursive writing is archaic and a waste of time, while others believe it is a relevant skill. Here is a look at both sides of the debate.

The pros of cursive writing Various experts and educators have weighed in on the lasting benefits of cursive handwriting. Here are just a few of the benefits proponents of cursive writing point to.

Cursive writing stimulates the brain. "Cursive writing

helps train the brain to integrate visual and tactile information, and fine motor dexterity," Dr. William Klemm said in an article in Psychology Today. The skills developed from learning cursive writing cannot be replaced by using a keyboard. In addition, MRIs have revealed an interesting relationship between handwriting and the brain. The brains of people with good handwriting are more active in areas associated with cognition, language, and executive function than the brains of those with poor handwriting.

The cons of cursive writing There are various reasons why people think lessons in cursive writing are unnecessary.

Cursive writing is only used in signatures. Cursive writing is seldom used except for signatures. Even then, esigning and online transactions have removed the need to write in cursive. Typing on a keyboard should take precedence. Many

Cursive writing may promote focus. Writing things down by hand forces a person to slow down and formulate his or her thought. Handwritten notes may hold the advantage over computer-typed notes in terms of recollection of facts.

parents and educators believe that cursive writing lessons do little to prepare young students for an increasingly digital world. Such opponents of cursive writing suggest keyboarding lessons should take precedence over teaching handwriting skills. Teachers have admitted that cursive writing lessons take a lot of time, and many simply cannot devote classroom time to them.

Cursive writing may help students with dyslexia.

Digital texts make it obsolete. Some argue that those

Dyslexia is a language processing disorder that can hinder reading, writing, spelling and sometimes even speaking. According to the International Dyslexia Association, when writing cursive, the words jotted down become a unit, rather than a series of separate strokes, and that may contribute to better spelling. And since all lowercase cursive letters begin on the line, fewer of them are likely to be reversed. 44 July 2016

who do not know how to read in cursive can never understand historical texts or early manuscripts. However, so much has been transcribed into digital texts that this argument is seen by many as outdated. Cursive writing may be going the way of the dinosaur. But the debate about the value of cursive writing figures to continue.

Why Music Education Matters

By MS

The benefits of music education extend far beyond getting kids to tap their toes. The National Association for Music Education lists the following benefits among the many reasons to support music education in schools.

Music training helps develop language skills. Studies

have shown that music training contributes to the physical development of the part of the left side of the brain associated with processing language. A 2005 study from researchers at Stanford University found that mastering a musical instrument may also improve reading skills, which can benefit students both inside and outside the classroom.

Music training can improve hand-eye coordination.

Studies have linked long-term music training to improved hand-eye coordination. That is likely connected to the motor skills children develop when playing musical instruments. Without those instruments, those motor skills may not develop as strongly.

Music improves concentration. Even students who cannot play a musical instrument can still benefit academically from simply listening to music. In 2007, a research team from the Stanford University School of Medicine found that music engages the areas of the brain involved with paying attention. Today's students deal with numerous distractions, from smartphones to tablets to social media, but those who routinely listen to certain types of music might find it easier to block out those distractions and focus on their work.

Music can improve self-esteem. In a study examining

117 fourth-grade students attending public school in Montreal, a researcher at the University of Texas at Austin found that children who received piano lessons weekly for three years had higher self-esteem than children who were not given piano lessons during the same period. Neither group had participated in formal music instruction before the study, and students in both groups reported similar levels of self-esteem prior to participating in the study.

Lead paint poisoning affects over one million children today. Learning disabilities, hearing loss, speech delays, violent behavior and, in rare cases, seizures and even death: these are just some of the effects lead paint poisoning has on young children. If your home was built before 1978, lead paint on your walls, doors, windows and sills may be dangerous. And it’s not just large paint chips that can cause damage. In fact, three granules of lead dust are enough to poison your child. Let’s make all kids lead-free kids. To learn more about the simple steps you can take to safeguard your family, log on to LEADFREEKIDS.org or call 800-424-LEAD.

Music education can enrich the lives of young students in a myriad ways, potentially contributing to happier, more fulfilling lives. azhealthandliving.com | July 2016

Your DIY Wedding Guide As the cost of the average wedding continues to rise, it's understandable that couples ready to tie the knot may be seeking any and all ways to save money. While some aspects of a wedding are better left to the professionals, others are prime for a little do-it-yourself cost cutting. Couples should just be sure they have the skills and resources available to handle portions of their weddings on their own. Otherwise, the cost savings may be negated by trial and error. The following are some areas that may be a good fit for couples looking to try their own DIY techniques.

Floral centerpieces: While floral bouquets and boutonnieres are probably best left to professional florists, couples may want to try making their own reception table centerpieces. Such centerpieces can be simple displays of fresh flowers in vases or more intricate designs. Test out any ideas prior to the wedding. Remember to keep arrangement height in mind. You do not want to obscure the views of seated guests. Cake: Ask a pastry chef or bakery to make you a small cake that can be used for cake-cutting traditions and photo opportunities, but have your own cake available to serve. Sheet cakes are much less expensive than more intricate tiered cakes, but they can be just as delicious. Guests may not even know the difference if the cake is sliced and served out of the reception site's kitchen. Purchase the cake or make it on your own. Invitations: Professionally designed invitations can look beautiful, but not everyone has the budget for embossing or engraving and expensive paper stock. Thanks to graphic design and page layout software, computersavvy couples can design and print their invites right from home. That makes it easy to create a new invitation if you miscounted or if you have a last-minute addition to the guest list. Favors: Create favors that work with the theme of your wedding and make them yourself. These can be candles, fruit preserves, soaps, baked goods, or anything else that appeals to you. The cost of making them in bulk may 46 July 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

turn out to be less than purchasing manufactured items. Plus, guests get to take home something that came directly from you.

Video: Enlist a friend or family member to capture the wedding and after-party on video for you. You can use video-editing software available through popular apps to piece together your own wedding video memento. Couples about to tie the knot can become more handson in wedding planning and execution. By handling some of the work themselves, couples can save a considerable amount of money. A do-it-yourself approach also may foster feelings of pride in a job well done.

Reconnect During Wedding Planning By MS

Couples expend so much energy planning their weddings that it can be easy to lose sight of the bigger picture namely the relationship that is the basis for the marriage in the first place. But as easy as it can be to get lost in wedding planning, couples can use this time together to connect on a deeper level and learn to work cooperatively.

Divide and conquer. Separate wedding planning duties so that both of you feel you are contributing equally and no one person gets overly stressed out. Stress can lead to short tempers and arguments.

Establish a mutual budget. Even the healthiest couple argues over finances from time to time, but budgetary debates should not set a negative tone for wedding planning. Couples should discuss their potential budget before they even begin to plan their weddings, and both partners should do their best to compromise while also understanding where the other person is coming from.

Schedule time for fun. Do not let wedding planning be all-consuming. Schedule days that allow you to enjoy yourselves together without having to think about or discuss your pending nuptials. This may include date nights that may have fallen by the wayside since getting engaged or periodic day trips to get away from it all. Explore your mutual hobbies or try something new.

Learn to laugh at the little things. Not every detail will go off without a hitch. How you react as a couple may influence how much you enjoy your wedding. Recognize that certain things will not go your way, but that unforeseen circumstances will not ruin your wedding day, no matter how unpleasant they may seem. Laugh at what cannot be changed and recognize that, in the long run, the details you think are major today may actually prove trivial when you look back on your wedding day in the years to come. azhealthandliving.com | July 2016

How to Treat Muscle Cramps & Prevent Their Recurrence Rare is the athlete who has not had the misfortune of suffering a muscle cramp. Muscle cramps can range from the relatively minor nuisances that can be worked out in a matter of minutes to the more severe cramps that can sideline athletes for an indeterminate period. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, muscle cramps are often the byproduct of an overused or injured muscle. When a muscle cramps that muscle is involuntarily contracting, and that contraction can be very painful. Because athletes tend to repeat their motions when performing exercises, it's not uncommon for athletes to cramp up from time to time. But even men and women who live sedentary lifestyles can suffer from muscle cramps, which the NLM notes could be triggered by alcoholism, hypothyroidism or kidney failure. Women may suffer muscle cramps when they are pregnant or menstruating. Certain medications may also cause muscle cramps. Men and women concerned about muscle cramps should read the potential side effects of their medications carefully or speak directly with their physicians before taking any medicines that may cause muscle cramps. The online medical resource WebMD notes that medications such as Lasix, a diuretic used to remove fluid from the body, and Crestor, a statin prescribed to adults with high cholesterol, can cause muscle cramps. While dehydration and electrolyte depletion has long been linked to exercise-associated muscle cramps, researchers have been questioning, if not disputing that link for many years. A 2008 study from South African researchers published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine did not support a link between exercise-associated muscle cramps and dehydration or electrolyte depletion. Muscle cramps tend to be painful and can occur in the legs, hands, arms, or abdomen or along the rib cage. When cramps occur below the waist, such as in the calf muscle, it can be difficult to stand up.

Treating muscle cramps Muscle cramps require immediate treatment so sufferers can alleviate the pain and/or discomfort cramps can cause. Massaging the cramped muscle or applying ice or heat can alleviate the cramp and its associated pain. Calf or hamstring cramps may be alleviated by putting weight 48 July 2016

on the affected leg and bending the knee slightly. Such cramps may also be treated by sitting or lying down with the affected leg straight out and pulling the foot toward the head. To treat quadriceps cramps (those that occur in the front of the thigh), hold on to something steady, and pull the foot of the affected leg back toward the buttock.

Preventing future cramps One of the most effective ways to prevent future cramps is to listen to your body when it's sending you signals that it is fatigued. Overused muscles are vulnerable to cramps, so remember to include rest in your exercise regimen so muscles have time to recover. If your body feels overtaxed or fatigued before or during a workout, skip the workout or stop it immediately to reduce your risk of cramps or injury. Deficiencies in certain vitamins can directly or indirectly lead to muscle cramps. While the reasons behind the link between thiamine, pantothenic acid and pyridoxine deficiencies and muscle cramps is unknown, speak with your physician about how to include these vitamins in your diet if you have been experiencing muscle cramps. Cramps can be painful and derail athletes. Learning to prevent cramps can protect athletes and ensure they are not sidelined from their favorite activities.

Ways Men & Women Metabolize Food Differently By MS

Men and women process food differently. When dieting side by side, men appear to shed pounds easier and more quickly than women do. But is that really the case? According to Greg Caporaso, assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Northern Arizona University and assistant director of the Center for Microbial Genetics and Genomics, diet affects men and women's stomach microbes differently, even when identical foods have been eaten. In addition, according to the paper "Lower sedentary metabolic rate in women compared with men," R. Ferraro, S. Lillioja, A. M. Fontvieille, R. Rising, C. Bogardus, and E. Ravussin, affiliated with the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and National Institutes of Health, Phoenix, and published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation, on average, women's total energy expenditure, which is the number of calories burned for metabolic needs, including breathing, blood circulation, digestion and physical activity, is around 5 to 10 percent lower than men's. The composition of the female body also differs from the composition of the male body. Men have more muscle mass and less body fat than women, which also can contribute to how easily men may be able to shed weight. Maintaining that muscle mass can push their metabolisms even further. According to the Poliquin Group, producers of unique weight training fitness programs and supplements, the following factors also come into play. 路 At rest, women burn more glucose (sugars and starches) but less fat than men do. 路 Men and women burn and store body fat differently. 路 Stress can inhibit fat loss in women. 路 Diet trends, including fasting and calorie restriction, tend to be more beneficial for men than women. To overcome these factors, women can work with their doctors, trainers, and nutritionists to develop plans that take their unique metabolisms into consideration. azhealthandliving.com | July 2016

Recognize & Prevent Repetitive Stress Injuries Repetitive stress injuries, or RSIs, can impact muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves. Though The Mayo Clinic estimates that 3 million people in the United States are affected by such injuries, some may not fully understand just how they reached a point where they are suffering from an RSI. RSIs are a condition that occurs when too much stress is placed on one part of the body, typically a joint, repeatedly, resulting in inflammation and potential tissue damage. RSIs typically happen when a person repeats the same movements again and again. It comes as no surprise then that RSIs are commonly experienced by athletes and office workers. The elderly are most affected by RSIs, but these types of injuries are also known to occur in younger adults and children. These injuries tend to develop over time and tend go unnoticed in their early stages. Prevention is the best defense against RSIs. Start by using proper equipment at all times to help keep the body protected and in neutral positions. Such equipment may include support devices for wrists or knees, and shoes that fit well and provide ample support.

· Feet should be flat on the floor or on a footrest.

Athletes should make sure their gear is properly sized to their bodies. Using the wrong size tennis racket, for example, may contribute to elbow strain when serving and hitting.

· Support your back with a lumbar support or a small pillow.

Proper nutrition also is key. Consuming the right foods is essential to developing and maintaining strong muscles, which help support joints in the body. Speak with a doctor or nutritionist if you suspect your diet has room for improvement.

· Keep frequently used items close by so you do not need to stretch.

RSIs can be troublesome for office workers. Maintaining neutral body positioning is the best defense against pain and injury, according to the pain prevention resource Tifaq.com. Tifaq.com suggests following these procedures in addition to stretching and exercising at the office:

· Take frequent breaks to stretch or take a walk around the office.

· Keep your head level, forward facing and in line with your torso. 50 July 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

· Shoulders can be relaxed and arms hanging normally at your sides. Your elbows should be at about 90-degree angles.

· Sit vertically or lean back slightly while at your desk.

· Position your monitor so it is directly in front of you and at eye level.

Examples of RSIs include carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff injuries, tendonitis and trigger finger. Always consult with a doctor if pain from routine activities is persistent. Individuals may benefit from working with a physical therapist to learn strategies to avoid RSI activities.

How to Build a Strong Professional Network By MS

A strong professional network is not built overnight, and many professionals spend years nurturing relationships with people in their networks. Individuals and business owners can take several approaches when building professional networks they will rely on for years to come.

Ask around. Some individuals may hesitate to seek networking

advice out of fear of appearing opportunistic. But successful professionals understand the need to network, so your colleagues will likely be glad to offer referrals if they're in a position to do so. When receiving a referral, ask if you can use the person's name, which should help you establish a connection during the introductory process. Resist the idea that using a colleague's name when meeting a professional you hope to work with is something sinister, as the name will only help you with the introduction. Once the introduction has been made, it's up to you to do the rest.

Get active in your industry. Being active in your industry by joining professional organizations and attending seminars and other industry events is a great way to expand your network. Volunteer to work with professional organizations when possible or offer to host information sessions or educational workshops at your business. Reconnect with your college or university. When meeting

people affiliated with your alma mater, the ice has already been broken in a sense, as the school is essentially a built-in connection. Alumni organizations and local chapters can introduce you to people who earned your degree at your school, and many people love to help their fellow alumni.

Employ social media. Social media is a great way for professionals to make and maintain professional contacts. LinkedIn, for example, makes it easy to connect with fellow professionals who are looking to do the same. Twitter can be used to promote professional events such as seminars or workshops you are working with. These platforms can be used to grow your network quickly and easily, but be sure to vet each person you connect with to make sure you are affiliating yourself with the right people. azhealthandliving.com |July 2016

Blake Lively

The experienced star continues to impress

Popular actress and model Blake Lively is in the spotlight again for her movie “The Shallows,” which hit theaters late last month. With a background in modeling, TV and film, Lively has starred in the TV drama “Gossip Girl” and movies such as “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” “Green Lantern,” “The Age of Adaline,” and more. In fact, the 28-year-old Lively has been in show business most of her life. “Despite having practically grown up on the red carpet - Lively's first role was in her father's film, ‘Sandman,’ when she was just 10 - the actress says the pressure of stepping out in front of all of those cameras gets no less daunting with time, though she's learned to deal with it in her own way, with her own very specific beauty reference point,” according to a recent article by VOGUE. "… It's so not my comfort zone having all these people taking my picture and me trying to make that beautiful J-Lo face - you know what I mean, how she's fierce, yet relaxed, and has those mysterious eyes... But at Cannes they put on music, so you're not focusing on people screaming your name and it blasts out your inner thoughts. It's the difference between dancing with and without music,” Lively told VOGUE. 52 July 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

In addition to acting, she’s also a spokesperson for L'Oréal. She told VOGUE that she chose the company she’s represents with care. "We're used to hearing these slogans from companies and so they've lost their meaning in a way, but women are worth it. Why the bleep not? It doesn't just apply to make-up, it applies to everything.” The wife of actor and producer Ryan Reynolds and mom to one-year-old daughter James, it’s rumored by several media outlets that Lively is expecting a second child. According to DailyMail.com, Lively and Reynolds were recently seen house hunting in New York. Reynolds is not only Lively’s husband but also her inspiration for taking on her starring role in “The Shallows,” according to Entertainment Weekly. “My husband did a movie called ‘Buried’ and that was one of the reasons why I wanted to take on this movie so much, because I know how tough that was for him and how rewarding it was,” she revealed to the magazine. “It was terrifying and one of the most vulnerable things you can do but you gotta do it, right?” If there’s one constant in Lively’s busy life, it’s Reynolds. The actor has no problem continuously declaring his love for his leading lady to the media on multiple occasions. “When I wrapped ‘Deadpool’ five weeks ago, within an hour - I’m not joking, I still had chunks of glue from the scar makeup on my face - I was boarding a plane to Bangkok so I could get to my wife and baby right away,” he told Us Magazine. “I’ll do anything to be with them.” In addition to her bustling career and home life, Lively is known for being somewhat of a foodie; according to multiple sources she has taken a variety of cooking classes and has even baked and struck up a friendship with celebrity homemaker (and her neighbor!) Martha Stewart. Added to that, she’s used her fame to highlight political and social issues, including charities that support women’s causes. Understand the Mechanics Behind a Saltwater Filter Summer is pool season. Come spring, homeowners prepare their backyard pools for several months of leisurely floating or engaging games of aquatic volleyball. This preparation includes uncovering the pool and rebalancing the pool's chemical levels. Pool preparation and maintenance also includes installing a working filter. While there, are many different types of pool filters and filter mediums, in recent years, saltwater filter systems have been growing in popularity. Consumers who want to upgrade to a saltwater system may be interested in learning a bit more about how such systems work. Saltwater systems are those in which chlorine is generated by the system itself. These systems do not usually require the addition of a powdered or liquid form of chlorine. Electrolysis occurs thanks to a chemical process that involves pool water passing through a salt cell and being exposed to a low-voltage current. This essentially breaks up the sodium chloride molecules (salt) into hypochlorous acid and sodium hypochlorite, which are sanitizing agents. Therefore, saltwater systems are not chlorine-free. They just produce chlorine from a less caustic material. One of the main advantages to a saltwater system is the constant generation of free chlorine. Pool water chemistry is often broken down into FC (free chlorine) and CC (combined available chlorine). FC is yet untouched chlorine that can do its sanitizing job. CC contains chlorine and chloramines, which are produced when the chlorine comes in contact with urine, sweat and other contaminants present in the pool. CC is what contributes to the "chlorine smell" of the water. When there isn't enough FC and there's too much CC, pool water levels need to be returned to optimal conditions, usually through a shocking process. However, with saltwater systems, there's always an abundance of FC being delivered into the water, making levels super chlorinated, and these systems eliminate the formation of CC. Saltwater chlorine generators require few, if any, additional 56 July 2016 | azhealthandliving.com

chemicals, as they produce nearly neutral pH levels. This isn't always the case with other chlorine sources, which can raise or lower pH or add to the presence of other substances, such as calcium, in the water with calcium hypochlorite sanitizers. Because these saltwater filtration and chlorine-generating systems are relatively automatic, they also can mean less maintenance. This is handy for homeowners who go on vacation or do not want to be hassled by the daily care other systems may require. One of the disadvantages to saltwater systems is the cost, which can be prohibitive to some people. According to Thursday Pool Manufacturing, installing the average system costs anywhere from $800 to $2,000. But some feel that cost is offset by the money saved on pool chemicals over the course of a season. Switching to a chlorine-generating saltwater filtration system can be a worthwhile investment for many pool owners.

Summer Car Care Tips

Contributed by NARPRO (Neighborhood Auto Repair Professionals), www.NARPRO.com

Even though it is July, the heat has long-term effects on cars, especially when they are not maintained properly. Staying on top of routine repairs and oil changes through the summer can make all the difference. A small issue now could turn into a bigger issue where you and your family are stranded on the side of the road because of a dead battery or blown tire. Here are some tips to keep your car running smoothly through summer and beyond.

Air Conditioning · If it’s not running ice cold now, you should have it examined before it’s even hotter. Yes, the middle to end of the summer are when we hit record temps. · If it’s running a little warm you might have low refrigerant, a loose drive belt, clogged valves or filters or clogs in the condenser. · Neglecting minor issues like a leaky hose can lead to early compressor failure, which can top $1,000 to fix.

Tires · Underinflated tires create excessive heat and stress that can lead to a blowout. · According to the Rubber Manufacturers Association, 85 percent of drivers don’t know how to properly inflate their tires. · To get the most accurate pressure reading, check tires when they’ve been driven less than a mile. · The minimum acceptable tread depth is 3/32 inch, which is about the distance from the edge of a penny to the top of Abe Lincoln’s head, but you don’t want to strive for the minimum during an Arizona summer. · It is important to remember if you haul a trailer for a boat or recreational vehicle to have the tires checked. Many drivers overlook these tires and they can cause a very scary or even deadly accident.

Batteries · Heat evaporates battery fluids, which can speed up corrosion. · Batteries last an average of 30 months in the Arizona heat. · If your car’s battery is more than 2 years old, you should test it now to make sure it’ll last through the entire summer. azhealthandliving.com | July 2016

Interesting Ways to Enjoy Travel Research indicates that traveling is at the top of the list of interests motivating today's men and women over the age of 50. Seniors are perhaps the most likely demographic to indulge their love of traveling. Retirement leaves lots of time for recreation, and many choose to spend that time on the road. Travel also can improve adult longevity, say geriatricians at the University of Arkansas. Those in the travel industry understand that men and women over 50 comprise a large percentage of their customers and have catered many travel packages toward this influential demographic. The following is a look at some of the more popular travel opportunities for men and women over 50.

Genealogical tourism: This is one of the fastestgrowing markets in vacation travel. Genealogical tourism involves individuals traveling to areas of historical significance for their families, such as churches where past relatives may have married and villages where grandparents or cousins once resided or were employed. This can create a tangible link to one's past and open up more opportunities to learn the varied genealogical history that has shaped a family, and even one's personal identity.

Extended vacations: Seniors may have the capacity to devote more time to travel and not be caged in by strict time constraints. That makes them eligible for extended vacations. These can include long-term rentals in tropical locales, several-week sightseeing cruises or guided tours overseas that touch on several different countries or cities during the trip.

Off the beaten path: Adventurous travelers may not be content to stick to the resort lifestyle or standard vacation options. Active men and women over 50 are charting their own vacation courses with bucket list-style vacations that may be off the beaten path. Travelers who have always aspired to climb a mountain or see a rain forest may be inclined to realize these goals, as they get older. Nontraditional tours can include living like indigenous peoples or following the footsteps of early explorers.

All-inclusive tours: All-inclusive packages remain a popular option for travelers of all ages. These vacation packages charge 60 July 2016

one price for accommodations, entertainment, sightseeing, food and many other amenities. All-inclusive vacations remove some of the headaches associated with organizing various components of travel so that a person can focus on relaxation and having fun.

Singles meets: Single vacationers over 50 may want to meet other men or women in their age bracket in the hopes of finding romance. These vacations double as relationship mixers and give men and women the opportunity to mingle with others in similar situations without the pressure of traditional dating. Travel is a way to see the world, meet new people and experience various cultures. Seniors increasingly embrace travel because they have both the time and the means to take vacations.

Moving is the best medicine. Keeping active and losing weight are just two of the ways that you can fight osteoarthritis pain. In fact, for every pound you lose, that’s four pounds less pressure on each knee. For information on managing pain, go to fightarthritispain.org.

Senior Dating Trends and Tips Finding love again is possible for seniors who get back into the dating scene. The first Baby Boomers will be turning 70 in 2016, and this generation remains one of the most influential in the country and around the world. Scores of products and services are now marketed to seniors, many of whom remain as active and socially aware as they were in their youth. One aspect of senior marketing that is booming is dating and relationship products. Singles age 50 and older are increasingly relying on online dating sites and other methods to find love and companionship. Dating is no longer kids' play, and those who have been away from dating for some time may have to be reacquainted with the process in the modern age.

Consider online dating Data from Pew Research found one in two divorced or widowed seniors had remarried in 2013, and that trend figures to continue. Many seniors are using online dating sites to find their new matches. While websites geared to dating make it easier to get in touch with fellow singles, the relative anonymity of the process can make it challenging to separate the truth from some self-promoting hype on dating profiles. Begin by relying on dating sites that have been tested and recommended. One to try is the AARP dating site partnered with How About We. In addition to its simplicity and small financial commitment, the site caters to the over 50 crowd and is backed by the AARP name. It's good for those looking for an activity partner as well as casual dating. Popular sites Match.com and eHarmony.com also boast high percentages of users age 50 and up. Even after thorough consideration and conversation, online daters should exercise caution when meeting someone online and then in person. Profiles aren't always what they seem, and it's easier to fudge the facts when initiating contact over the Internet. 62 July 2016

| azhealthandliving.com

Keep an open mind It's easy to be preoccupied with the rigors of being an older adult and the responsibilities that still may rest on your shoulders. Part of the fun of dating when you were young likely had to do with throwing caution to the wind. But some of those same carefree aspects remain true whether you're dating at 17 or at 57. Laughter, fun, spontaneity, and the chance for some adventure are still the keys to making memorable dates.

Sometimes it's who you know The old adage of it's "who you know" and not "what you know" is applicable to dating. If you are ready to jump into the dating world again, ask your close friends or family members if they know anyone who might be in a similar situation. Taking another stab at dating later in life can be both exciting and nerve-wracking, but no matter how long it's been since your last first date, some aspects of dating are the same as ever. Just remember to have fun and don't be afraid to try new things.

How Elder Care Attorneys Make Great Assets By MS

Few people want to imagine growing old, but a time comes in every person's life when he or she must begin planning for their golden years, including making arrangements regarding their health care and housing. Elder planning can be confusing, but having an experienced, knowledgeable person on your side can make all the difference. Elder care attorneys can offer expertise in areas of managed care and government plans that can help individuals retain more of their personal assets, even when their ability to control those assets is compromised. Any lawyer can create a will and draw up an estate plan. Elder lawyers are well versed in programs such as Medicare and Medicaid and can help clients navigate their way through other potentially complex issues and programs as well.

Change Your Thoughts. Change Your Words. Change Your World. Sponsored by

Elder care attorneys and those who specialize in estate planning may have specific knowledge of any or all of the following areas: · Social Security and disability claims and appeals · Preservation of assets · Tax planning · Conservatorships and guardianships · Elder abuse and fraud recovery · Housing issues and nursing home placement · Estate administration · Managed care According to the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, Inc., finding an elder care or special needs attorney can take a little research. Specialized senior groups like AARP or groups advocating for certain diseases, may be able to offer information regarding local elder care attorneys. You also can consult with an attorney you trust and ask for a recommendation. You may want to choose a NAELA Member Attorney so you can rest easy knowing the attorney is meeting national standards. You may also seek referrals from friends or family members. If finances are a concern, address these concerns with the attorney. Some will charge hourly or offer a flat fee. Rates may be negotiable, and keep in mind that the money spent on retaining an attorney may pale in comparison to finances that could be wasted by going through the legal process alone. Elder care attorneys can help seniors and their heirs navigate the confusing waters of estate planning and managed care. azhealthandliving.com | July 2016
