"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.

"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp

Freeze Fat Away
for the Holiday!
For many aging men and women, localized fat layers can be very difficult to “work off. Even with a regular exercise regimen and strict dietary factors, areas such as love handles, abdominal fat, and back fat can be stubborn to contour. Surgical liposuction may not be an option for many people due to cost, down time or anesthesia. Now there is another option, it is a breakthrough, non-invasive procedure that uses cooling technology that noticeably eliminates fat without surgery. That’s right, similar to liposuction; the fat cells are eliminated resulting in fewer fat cells all together. Using science developed by Harvard scientist and technology by Zeltiq, induces selective fat layer reduction without any damage to overlying skin. Once the fat cells are affected by the cooling, they are eliminated from the body over the course of the next 90 days. There is no subsequent change in blood lipid levels following the procedure is completely non-invasive; there is no cutting, no needles, and no anesthesia necessary. The procedure begins with the device being attached to the area of concern with a suction sensation, and then a cold sensation is felt for the first few minutes. The area will feel either numb or cold for the remainder of the hour. During the procedure patients typically read, watch a movie, use electronic devices, listen to music, or relax. More than one area may be treated in the same appointment time. Upon consultation, your provider will determine if you are a good candidate and number of sessions that will be required for desired results and contour. is FDA cleared for the flank area and proven to be safe and effective with minimal side effects reported to resolve completely. There may possibly be some temporary pain or discomfort and your provider will discuss more on what to expect during and following the procedure. Areas that may be treated include love handles, back fat, lower abdomen, and inner thigh. Each patient is individually assessed to determine number of treatments and expectations. Most patients require one to two treatments and see noticeable reduction of fat in the treated area after one visit. Some individuals may appreciate more fat reduction with additional treatments. The cost of the procedure ranges from $1500 to $3000 depending on number of treatments and number of areas being treated. Studies show elimination of visible fat maintained past two years. Call now for an appointment to reduce those love handles or other problem areas before the holidays!

“Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. ~2 Corinthians 9:15 Welcome to our December Issue. As the Holiday season is upon us, and we find ourselves reflecting on the past year, we must not forget the reason this is one of the most celebrated seasons.
Luke 2:14
Here are a few Bible verses to help you keep your focus on the spirit of the season.
Philippians 2:8-10
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Matthew 2:10
James 1:17
When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Isaiah 7:14
Luke 2:10-12 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
Luke 2:15-16 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
1 John 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 15:13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. Until next time, wishing you & your family blessed, healthy & safe Holidays!
God Bless You for Your Support! Here to serve,

Penguin Chicks at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park By Dr. Grey Stafford
Often associated with the holiday season, no species of penguin actually lives at the North Pole. In fact, all penguin species are native to the Southern Hemisphere, not the northern. Many, like the black-footed or African penguins are found in temperate or even tropical regions. As recently as 100 years ago, there were tens of thousands of African penguins nesting along the coastal areas of southern Africa. Today, there are only a few thousand breeding pairs left due largely to habitat loss, ocean pollution, and loss of prey due to overfishing. This past year, the Wildlife World aquarium team has been quite successful in raising a new generation of endangered penguin chicks. Be sure to check them out on display from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Wildlife World. Montessori in the Park
Empowering children to become self-confident, compassionate members of society Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and educator, once said: “Free the child's potential and you will transform him into the world.” With this philosophy in mind, Montessori in the Park (MiP), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) preschool, full-day kindergarten and elementary school, is educating students from across the West Valley and Phoenix metro area to be the next generation of compassionate global citizens. Montessori in the Park, based in Goodyear, was founded in 2007. “The founders (three families and a corporate sponsor) and a small group of teachers and parents saw the need for a program that would foster their children’s love of learning and provide a positive environment for their growth,” according to the school’s official website, www.mipschool.org. Fast-forward to today and MiP is home to more than 100 students who span ages 3 to 12, confirms Kim Anderson, the school’s president. What is the Montessori Method? According to the American Montessori Society, “The Montessori Method of education, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, is a child-centered educational approach based on scientific observations of children from birth to adulthood. Dr. Montessori's method has been time tested, with over 100 years of success in diverse cultures throughout the world.”
The American Montessori Society notes that components for an authentic Montessori program include multiage child groupings that foster peer learning, uninterrupted blocks of work time, and guided choice of work activity. “In addition, a full complement of specially designed Montessori learning materials are meticulously arranged and available for use in an aesthetically pleasing environment,” the organization cites. Montessori in the Park, which has been recognized by the Southwest Valley Chamber of Commerce, offers a dynamic Montessori based education in preschool/ kindergarten and elementary classrooms. Because of the multiage environment, students are grouped by age with their peers: ages 3-6 and 6-12 are placed together based on the children’s needs and planes of development. Another unique factor about the school is that parents and families are encouraged to be engaged in their children’s education. Families are welcome into the classroom for Montessori Mondays and have monthly classes available on a variety of relevant topics. They’re encouraged to volunteer at events as well.
16 December 2015 | azhealthandliving.com

MiP students have the chance for classroom learning as well as an outdoor environment and “going outs” for the older students, which are chances for the kids to experience their interests outside of the classroom walls. Right now, the school is tuition-based, with two major fundraisers each year, including a casino night and a golf tournament to help lower tuition costs. In addition, students’ families are encouraged to support the school in a variety of ways, including the Arizona Private School Tax Credit program. It works like this: the Arizona Private School Tax Credit Program allows Arizona residents to direct up to $2,134 to the Montessori Scholarship Organization (In 2015, $1,067 for individuals, $2,134 for a couple filing jointly). This organization will, in turn, provide 95 percent of their donation to Montessori in the Park for use in providing scholarships to students (5 percent is retained for administrative purposes), cites the MiP website. (Visit www.msoonline.com for more information.) “My vision for all future students is to have a scholarship program that will enable any child to attend MiP regardless of their finances,” says Anderson. “We have to work together—parents, families, businesses and the community—to contribute to the Private School Tax Credit to build a scholarship program that will grow and provide for today’s students and future scholars, too,” she continues. “Whether students only experience preschool or go through 12 years old, the foundation they receive from a Montessori education is priceless. I would like all children to have the opportunity.”

NEIGHBORHOOD BUZZ
Winter Wonderland Community Event By Josh Skalniak
Arizona ranks among the worst states in the nation for homelessness. Sadly, 40 percent of Maricopa County’s homeless people are women and children in families. To help make the holidays special for many of these struggling families, Phoenix Rescue Mission is hosting its annual Winter Wonderland event and encourages the public to get involved. On Saturday, Dec. 19, the Mission will offer a “shopping” area where homeless moms and dads can “shop” for their children for Christmas. The children will also get to “shop” and wrap presents for their parents. The Mission is currently collecting gifts for children and parents. This event will take place at Phoenix Rescue Mission, located at 1801 S. 35th Ave., in Phoenix. If you would like to sponsor a child or help on the day of the event, visit the volunteer page at www.phoenixrescuemission.org or contact Community Engagement at 602.346.3363 or volunteer@phoenixrescuemission.org.
Ballet Arizona's The Nutcracker
Celebrate the holidays with Ballet Arizona and their 30th year of The Nutcracker, choreographed by renowned artistic director Ib Andersen. The Nutcracker will run Dec. 11-27 for a total of 20 performances at Symphony Hall, located at 75 N. 2nd St., in downtown Phoenix. The beloved ballet tells the story of a little girl named Clara who is given a magical nutcracker doll on Christmas Eve. She encounters the frightful Mouse King before embarking on a journey through the Land of Snow and the Kingdom of Sweets. Experience special effects, including the Christmas tree that "grows" to 40 feet, 200 pounds of "snow" falling during the snow scene and the firing of cannons onstage. Before each performance of The Nutcracker, attendees are invited to the Symphony Hall lobby for pre-show events including storytelling and photos with the Sugar Plum Fairy beneath a 20-foot Christmas tree. Tickets can be purchased by calling 602.381.1096 or by visiting www.balletaz.org.

Ways to Stay Healthy this Holiday Season With the holiday season upon us, many people's schedules are hectic once again. There are social events and family gatherings to attend, shopping ventures to make, and decorating to be done. While fun, the holiday season can be a time of added pressure, which leads to stress and other unhealthy situations. At a time when you want to be at your best, stress can affect your physical well-being. The American Psychological Association says the hustle and bustle of the holidays has psychological consequences for some people. More people are inclined to feel that their stress increases, rather than decreases, around the holidays. The National Institute of Mental Health says chronic stress can lower immunity, and cause excretory digestive and reproductive systems to stop working properly. Stress also may cause you to eat unhealthy snacks to cope, and that can lead to unwanted weight gain. Stress is not the only potential health hazard that can arise around the holidays. A greater number of parties expose you to an abundance of foods and drinks you may not consume on a regular basis and that can lead to a lot of mindless eating. Weight gained during this time of year can be difficult to shed come January, when colder temperatures challenge many peoples' motivation to exercise. Also, social settings put you in close contact with a greater number of people, potentially increasing your exposure to germs. You can still feel your best during the holidays. Follow these tips for maintaining a healthy mind and body.
Carry disinfecting wipes Germs can linger on surfaces long after an infected person has come and gone. Studies from researchers at the University of Arizona in Tucson have found the flu virus - and even the antibiotic-resistant bacteria MRSA - on airline tray tables. Buses, trains, and doors all may 26 December 2015| azhealthandliving.com
Do your best to avoid stress or illness around the holidays. be harboring germs. Wipe down surfaces with disinfecting wipes and allow them to air-dry before touching them. This can help you avoid coming into contact with germs.
Balance your activities It can be tempting to overbook your schedule with a ton of activities, but this may ultimately prove stressful. Leave days open to relax and do things you want to do, such as viewing Christmas light displays or even just unwinding at home with a good book. Try delegating some tasks to others in the household so you don't take on too much responsibility.
Keep up an exercise routine Don't stray too far from your exercise schedule. You may have to move workout times to free up other time later in the day for shopping or parties. Early morning is a good time to exercise because it gets you moving first thing in the morning and might even encourage you to hit the sack a little earlier each night, ensuring you get all the sleep you need. Exercise also can improve energy levels and relieve stress.
Don't focus on food Focus more on enjoyable activities that keep you moving rather than always being seated around the table for a big meal. Save indulgences for one or two treats on the holidays and eat sensibly otherwise.
Talk to someone If the holidays have you feeling blue, talk to a friend or family member. If you need more professional support, find a social worker or psychologist that can help you work through stress and other feelings.

Be a Better Person Every Day Resolving to grow as a person, embrace new experiences, and take others' needs into consideration is an admirable goal. Attempting to be the best version of yourself can place you on a path to a rich and fulfilling life. Becoming a better person does not take vast riches or even substantial change. Easy, daily practices can transform an individual’s life and the lives of those around them for the better. And when one person performs a good deed, there's a greater chance that others who have witnessed that deed will be inspired to do good as well. As a new year dawns, men, and women can take the following steps to become better people.
Become a better listener People are born with two ears and one mouth, but why? Perhaps it's because it's often better for you to listen more than you speak. Give others the benefit of being heard more often and you may foster deeper relationships and learn a few things in the process.
Treat everyone with respect The golden rule is to treat others how you want to be treated. Think before you speak and recognize others for their achievements. A kind word of encouragement can go a long way.
Stop blaming others
Do for others when you can
It can sometimes be easier to point out faults rather than strengths in others, especially if you are lacking in a particular area. Own up to your own mistakes and do not blame others for any lack of success you experience.
Think about how you can help others in your daily life. Would a friend appreciate your picking up his or her kids from school? Can you grab a few essentials from the store for an elderly neighbor? What if you helped a stranger find his destination after getting lost? Simple gestures can have a substantial impact.
Smile more People today spend much of their time with their heads down reading phones and tablets. Conversations have become stilted, and there may be fewer opportunities to engage new people in meaningful conversations. Looking up and smiling at others -even complete strangers - can brighten someone else's day and may just lay the foundation for new friendships. 28 December 2015| azhealthandliving.com

Problem: ‘I’m Not Creative’ Solution: Believe You Can Be
By Mona Patel, founder and CEO of Motivate Design, and author of Reframe: Shift the Way You Work, Innovate and Think
Many difficulties are blank canvases awaiting innovative answers. Imagination is the difference between the problems plaguing our every day and the future solutions to those issues; imagination is step one for answers that work. Imagine that you could work on an app that better informs financial decisions to help users get out of debt; imagine working with technology that helps patients and doctors better manage illness and health; imagine being stuck in the rain with a crappy umbrella and allow the experience to spark the curiosity that leads to a better design – these problems are amazing! Problems are amazing because of the innovative and creative solutions that often follow. There are so many big, juicy problems out there that remain blank canvases just waiting for the answers to improve the quality of life for us all. The problem that often hobbles problem-solving, however, is the “I can’t” mindset, which we all suffer to a greater or lesser extent. It’s the hurdle separating problem recognition and imagination. But if we can get past “I can’t,” we enable wonder, curiosity, creativity and, sometimes, groundbreaking innovation. How do we overcome the “I can’t” mindset?
Believe you can or, if needed, get unstuck. If you believe that you are creative, good. You’re going to need that creativity, so just trust yourself. If you don’t, trust in a process that begins with “Why?” If you’re stuck in doubt and “I can’t,” then attack it with “Why?” – “Why do I feel stuck?” It’s a great device for questioning and can help you understand the root cause of an issue. “Why?” sheds light on a usually irrational belief of “I can’t” and begins to liberate your mindset. The factor causing selfdoubt gets put into perspective, enabling you to move on.
Shift the way you see the problem. The shift is deceptively simple and is similar to how we can get unstuck. Problems are usually perceived to be much bigger than they really are, causing intimidation and avoidance. Be sensitive to this intimidation, and train yourself: rather than allowing anxiety to take root, allow yourself to see problems as an invitation, or challenge, to keep asking questions. See problems as an opportunity to change your mind about what you think is possible.
Ask, “What if?” There is a technique to “What if?” Creativity is like a muscle. A well-designed workout matters. So we created one to help people access and strengthen their creativity muscle. Think of this workout as high intensity interval training. Is it the only way to access the muscle? Of course not. But it works. The workout starts with a silent warmup ideation round of three minutes, followed by a sharing round with a team, repeated three times. In the silent ideation, you write down as many “What if?” or open questions as possible. Participants come up with ideas at the same time and write them down, so louder and more vocal people don’t have an advantage. A necessary general guideline in this sharing process is positivity – show support for good ideas or voice that you have a similar one in mind, and keep the vibe open and friendly with other positive language. Manage the creative momentum. While collective brainstorming and discussion can be fun while yielding group bonding, the more important takeaway is that the process has helped participants get out of their own way to grab and distill the best ideas that are out there. Having too many ideas can be its own problem, so it’s important to deduce and connect the best ones. By now, “I can’t” looks pretty ridiculous and unnecessary. This is a lesson that not only yields creative solutions for one problem, but a general principle with which to address all problems or, rather, opportunities. azhealthandliving.com | December 2015

Enjoy a Safe & Sound New Year's Eve New Year's Eve is one of the most popular party days of the year. As the clock ticks down toward a new year, revelers across the globe raise glasses of Champagne in celebration of what's to come. Such celebrations are a staple of the holiday season, but so, too, are accidents that result from excessive partying. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Jan. 1, when many New Year's Eve celebrants are heading home in the wee hours of the morning, is when the highest percentage of deaths related to alcohol occur. In addition, analysis from the National Safety Council found that roughly 42 percent of traffic fatalities during the New Year's holiday between 2007 and 2011 were related to drinking and driving. While New Year's Eve revelers may be more focused on celebrating than safety, all celebrants can take the following safety precautions to ensure they make it home safe and sound come Jan. 1.
Pick a designated driver When making New Year's Eve plans, pick a designated driver from your group of friends and/or family members. Many bars or clubs will waive cover charges for designated drivers, and such establishments may even provide them with complementary soft drinks and coffee throughout the night. The designated driver should agree to avoid alcohol entirely.
Use public transportation or taxis If you can't find a designated driver or are more comfortable letting professional drivers get you around on such a busy driving night, travel via public transportation or taxis. Leaving your car at home removes the temptation you may feel to get behind the wheel after a few drinks. Keep a bus or train schedule and the phone numbers of local taxi services in your wallet or purse so you are not stuck waiting for a ride home.
Let others know your plans Before heading out to celebrate New Year's Eve, let loved ones know of your plans for the night. This may help should 30 December 2015| azhealthandliving.com

Drowsy Driving Can Be as Dangerous as Driving Impaired The public is well educated about the dangers of driving while impaired by medication, alcohol or illegal drugs. But drivers may not be aware that driving while tired can be just as dangerous. Driving when tired can be a fatal mistake. Just as alcohol or drugs can slow down reaction time, impair judgment and increase the risk of accident, so, too, can being tired behind the wheel. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about 100,000 car crashes in the United States each year occur as the result of an overly tired driver. Various studies demonstrate that drivers who have remained awake for 18 hours before driving mimic the driving performance of intoxicated motorists. In fact, drowsy driving can be confused with driving with high blood alcohol content. Sleepiness can arise relatively quickly. According to Thomas Balkin, Ph.D., director of the behavioral biology program at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and a leading expert on sleep and fatigue, it's difficult for drivers to assess just how sleepy they are, sleepiness affects the part of the brain responsible for judgment and selfawareness, and when you've reached the stage where you are fighting sleep, the effect of any method of reviving yourself can be very short-lived. Furthermore, people do not have to be in a deep sleep to actually be asleep behind the wheel. Microsleeps occur when certain brain cells temporarily shut down for a few seconds. A person is not completely asleep but in a sort of fog as if they are asleep. When sleepiness sets in, the best course of action is to pull off the road. Opening the window, turning on the radio or blasting cold air is, at best, only a temporary solution. If driving with passengers and feelings of sleepiness appear, hand the keys over to a passenger, and 32 December 2015| azhealthandliving.com
Driving while tired may not seem as harmful as driving while under the influence of alcohol. However, both can affect reaction times similarly. have them take over driving, if possible. Otherwise, a short nap and a cup of coffee can be used in combination to increase alertness. It's also a good idea to avoid beginning a long road trip in mid-afternoon around the hours of two or three o'clock. While alertness generally dips in the evening hours, due to the circadian rhythm, alertness also dips in the late afternoon, prompting drowsiness. A 2010 study by the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety found that as many drivers reported falling asleep at the wheel in the afternoon hours as reported falling asleep late at night. Driving in a warm, quiet car also may spur drowsiness, as would driving after a heavy meal. Driving tired is just as dangerous as other impaired driving. Slow reaction times and unawareness of surroundings can contribute to accidents that are otherwise avoidable.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a serious and often life-threatening problem when sleepers stop breathing for 10 seconds or more (apnea), or breathe at a decreased rate and depth (hypopnea). Not only do they affect sleep, they are detrimental to an individual’s health, shorten a patient’s life and can be fatal. –Dr. Croft Vistancia Orthodontics 623.566.0800

which is a liquid produced in the liver. After eating fats, as your body begins the digestive process, your gallbladder contracts and pushes the stored bile into the common bile duct, which brings the liquid to your small intestine to aid digestion. Gallstones form when the liquid bile hardens and changes to hard pieces of stone-like material, which then can block the gallbladder from emptying or cause a blockage within the common bile duct causing symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, or what is often called a gallbladder attack.
Other symptoms may include constant heartburn, abdominal pain and bloating after you eat, or pain radiating to your back or right shoulder. Some people will experience fever, chills, yellowing of the skin and eyes, dark color urine and gray color stools. Severe pain attacks or constant pain that interferes with your daily life may mean that surgery is the best option. There are now very minimally invasive surgical procedures available for gallbladder removal. Hearing aids are expensive, and for some Year? A. Genetics play an important role in individuals, the high cost of hearing aids can A. Getting through the Holidays can be quite a health. Since mapping the human genome, we have made incredible leaps in medicine understanding how we process medications and nutrients. It is now possible that we can obtain a DNA blueprint by swabbing your inner cheek. This shows how you process different medications with enzymes (proteins that breakdown substances) in your body. Not only is this helpful to find the right medication for the right patient but it is incredibly helpful to prevent dangerous problems. These problems like cardiac arrhythmias happen when too much of a metabolite (the broken down pieces of a medication) build up in your body. If your body was not equipped with the enzymes necessary to break down medication or vitamins, such as folate, we can know this ahead of time and prescribe accordingly.
Many different medications can be tested such as anxiety and depression medication, pain medications, sleeping medication, blood thinners and most excitingly folate. Yes folate! This is a B vitamin that is very important for so many functions in the body. If we do not have the enzyme, we may have elevated homocysteine levels leading to heart problems. We may also may have a depressed mood or have problems with pregnancy. This mutation is quite common, with a carrier frequency of 31 percent to 39 percent (homozygote frequency 9 percent - 17 percent) among the white North American population. This is easily helped by taking the methylated version of folate instead of the regular over the counter version.

keep them in a state of isolation. Hearing aids don’t need to be as costly as they are. Many hearing aid stores bundle all future hearing care services into the cost of their hearing devices, which is why hearing aids cost so much. Some devices are sold for thousands above cost. Although this results in higher revenue for businesses that do sell hearing devices, it also results in individuals paying for services they may or may not use.
This bundled model may be great for someone that has no intention of ever moving, however, for someone who resides in two different states, depending on the time of year, this model would not be necessary and not in the best interest of the person buying the hearing devices. In a bundled plan, the hearing aid cost includes the hearing aid price, professional fees, and services for a certain period of time. The services are also limited to the hearing center that sold the device. Unbundled hearing plans include the cost of the hearing devices and the professional fitting fee to fit the device. Services are paid for, as the patient needs them.

Q. Why is my cat urinating outside of the litter box? A. When cats urinate outside of the litter box, it typically indicates that there is an underlying medical or behavioral issue. Underlying medical conditions that cause inappropriate urination are often painful such as urinary tract infections and uroliths (bladder stones). It is thought that the cat begins to associate the litter box with pain and eliminates elsewhere. Cats with urinary conditions may also demonstrate additional symptoms: • Straining to urinate • Abnormal posture while urinating • Attempting to urinate more often • Producing less urine • Pinkish to red discoloration of the urine • Unusual vocalizations while urinating Most medical conditions that cause inappropriate urination are treatable but time-sensitive. Young male cats need medical attention right away because they are at greatest risk of urinary tract obstruction; the urethra becomes plugged up, and urine flow stops altogether. Only when medical conditions have been ruled out is it appropriate to consider the inappropriate urination a behavioral issue. Q. With the holidays upon us, what do residents and travelers need to know about Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park? A. The most important thing to know is that Wildlife World is open every day of the year, including all holidays! So, when all your guests have had their fill of holiday dinner and deserts, and all the presents have been opened, consider getting the family outside to enjoy our state's great weather with a visit to Arizona’s largest collection of wild and exotic animals. With about 85 developed acres (with many more on the way) Wildlife World features over 600 wild and endangered species and thousands of animals, as well as several ride attractions like a log flume ride, a sky ride, a tram and an African Safari Train.
For well over a quarter century, one of the hallmarks of Wildlife World has been to create a family friendly experience that brings animals and visitors closer together with innovative habitats and displays. For example, Dragon World — a series of exhibits featuring giant reptiles like the state’s first saltwater crocodile and a large 20 feet, 200 lbs. reticulated python. Another fun exhibit is the baby animal’s nursery, which showcases different young animals throughout the year. With our increasingly busy and urban lifestyles, it is important to reconnect with Nature whenever and wherever possible. It’s not only healthy for us to make those connections with other living things, but it also helps build support for wildlife and habitat conservation. So take some time this holiday season to slow things down and enjoy a fun day and evening at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park. And be sure to enjoy a great lunch, dinner or drink at Dillon’s KC Style BBQ restaurant and patio bar at the Aquarium. Q. What is Limited Income Subsidy? A. I’m delighted to have an opportunity to offer a brief overview of this very important federal program.
I often hear from Medicare beneficiaries with limited resources who have been denied Medicaid benefits by their local State Department of Economic Security and think that there is no other help available to them. Many are completely unaware of this federal program exclusively designed to help pay for the cost of prescriptions drugs, monthly premiums, annual deductibles and co-pays associated with a Medicare prescription drug plan (Part D). To qualify for Limited Income Subsidy (LIS), there are conditions that need to be met: 1. You must be enrolled in Medicare A or B 2. Income and Resources must meet qualifying limits 3. Applications must be submitted and approved before benefits are available LIS is available on a sliding scale up to 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Level. The annual income benchmark is $17,655 (single) & $23,895 (couple). However, I encourage those with slightly higher resources to apply because individual circumstances are evaluated and taken into consideration. Once approved, Rx co-pays will be greatly reduced, the coverage gap (donut hole) will be waived, deductibles, and/or penalties will be eliminated, and plan premiums will be partially or completely subsidized. LIS will not affect your current Medicare plan. Those who qualify will also have a continual open enrollment so plan changes can be made throughout the year. Additional information and enrollment applications can be found at www.ssa.gov or by calling Social Security, (800) 772-1213.

Spread Holiday Cheer
Bring Old-Fashioned Caroling to Your Neighborhood Christmas carols help set the mood for the holiday season. Such songs are played in stores to create festive atmospheres for shoppers, and many families play seasonal music as they decorate their homes for the holidays. Carols were first sung in Europe thousands of years ago during Winter Solstice celebrations. When Christian holidays replaced many of the pagan celebrations, Christian holiday carols replaced the earlier songs. Before Christmas carols were sung by the general public, they were enjoyed during church services, when they sometimes were performed by official carol singers. However, new carols became popular during the Victorian era, when many ordinary people took to the streets to share holiday joy with others through the gift of song. Wassail, a thick, hot and spiced beverage, often kept carolers warm and soon wassailing and caroling became intertwined. Although carols and other songs are still popular forms of entertainment at school concerts and some religious group events, the classic tradition of carolers going door-to-door has largely fallen by the wayside. But those who want to bring back this once beloved tradition can take the following steps to do just that.
Find a caroling group leader. It helps to have someone who has a sense of musicality and pitch to lead the caroling. Carols are usually sung a Capella, so you'll need a strong singer to guide others and keep them in tune. Recruit a theater or music student or even a member of your church choir. Fill out the rest of the carolers with volunteers who have moderate to strong singing abilities. Of course, you can accept anyone, as it's more about sharing the joy rather than having a pitch-perfect group.
Choose a handful of well-known songs to sing. Your audience will appreciate easily recognizable songs they can sing along with if they choose.
Print lyric sheets. Although the lyrics to popular songs are widely known, it helps to have them handy if carolers forget verses. Keep extra copies on hand, in case others want to join the caroling group.
Choose a neighborhood to visit. Select an established neighborhood where there are likely to be many families and even seniors who will be most receptive to carolers. Place fliers in the mailboxes alerting residents of your caroling plans for those who want to be home to enjoy the free show.
Get a sponsor. If you live in a rural area and caroling

Different Ways to Spend More Time as a Family
By MS
As members of modern families are increasingly pulled in different directions, it can be challenging for them to enjoy time together as families. According to a report titled "Spending Time with His Kids: Effects of Family Structure on Fathers' and Children's Lives" in the Journal of Marriage and the Family, kids' academic performance can benefit from having mothers who frequently communicate with them and fathers who spend time doing activities with their kids. Time spent together also can nourish a stronger emotional bond between parents and children, which may make children less likely to exhibit behavioral problems. Kids are not the only ones who benefit from more family time. Parents who regularly interact with their children may learn to appreciate their kids even more. They can see the subtle changes in personality and abilities as kids age, and be better equipped to intervene if they suspect their children are veering off the right path. Parents who want to increase family time can do so in various ways. 路 Establish at least one day each week that the family catches up with one another. Choosing a day rather than winging it guarantees weekly time together. 路 Take a break from television or screen time on computers and mobile devices. The American Academy of Pediatrics discourages media use by children younger than two and recommends limiting older children's screen time to no more than one or two hours a day. Too much screen time by children, and even adults, can result in irregular sleeping habits, behavioral problems, obesity, and less time for play or family interaction. Shutting off devices for a few hours frees up opportunities for families to engage in other activities. 路 Take a vacation together as a family and make sure you leave phones and tablets behind at the hotel so you can fully immerse yourself in your surroundings. It's amazing what you might learn about one another when you are engaged in the same activity and are away from the distractions you routinely encounter back at home. azhealthandliving.com |December 2015

STAY ACTIVE & FIT
By MS
Include Good Fats & Carbs in a Healthy Eating Plan Come the end of the holiday season, many people resolve to rest, recharge, and get back to healthy eating habits. Losing weight and getting fit are the most common New Year's resolutions, but also the ones that people are most likely to abandon after a short time. That may be because New Year's dieters are too often choosing diets that are impractical and not conducive to longterm success. Some may stop eating certain foods or ingredients entirely, while others look to diets that require a level of commitment beyond busy adults' capabilities. Many fad diets target fat and carbohydrates, but dieters may not know that fat and carbs are necessary for a healthy metabolism. According to Dr. Walter Willett of the Harvard School of Public Health, low-fat diets don't work for many people. In fact, dozens of studies have found that low-fat diets are no healthier than moderate- or high-fat diets and may, in fact, be worse. Foods that are low in fat may be full of ingredients that can be detrimental when eaten in high amounts. Processed low-fat foods can be made to taste better with copious amounts of salt or sugar. Some low-fat foods are actually high in simple carbohydrates, which can cause spikes in blood sugar and increase bad fats called triglycerides in the blood. Simple carbohydrates are generally those that break down fast and do not provide much value beyond the initial energy burst. Although some simple carbs, such as fructose and lactose, can be beneficial and are generally found in healthy foods, it's best to avoid simple carbs. Eating healthy doesn't mean avoiding carbohydrates and fats altogether. The key is to find good fats and carbs that provide a host of benefits. Good fats, such as monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats, and omega-3 fatty acids, help to manage mood, maintain mental acuity, fight fatigue, and control weight. Good fats are largely found in olives, nuts, legumes, soy, and fatty fish. 46 December 2015 | azhealthandliving.com
Keep total fat intake to 20 to 30 percent of your calories. Good carbs are complex carbohydrates. They're starches that take a longer time to metabolize in your digestive system. Good carbs will raise blood sugar, but they will keep it at a stable level for an extended period. Complex carbs usually contain a lot of fiber, which can help keep a person feeling full for long periods. Plus, they help keep digestion moving smoothly to help you avoid constipation. Fibrous vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and beans are high in fiber and are good carbohydrate choices. Some foods contain both good carbs and good fats. Eating healthy means finding a balance that includes the right fats and carbohydrates.

Regularly consuming raisins may help lower your blood pressure. A bad diet may elevate a person's risk for high blood pressure, heart attack or stroke, while a diet rich in heart-healthy foods can lower that risk. The following are a handful of heart-healthy foods for men and women who want to begin the New Year on a nourishing foot.
Raisins. Researchers from the Louisville Metabolic and
Atherosclerosis Research Center found that consuming raisins three times a day may significantly lower blood pressure among individuals with mild increases in blood pressure. Raisins can help combat the growth of a type of bacteria that causes gum disease, which few people may know is linked to heart disease. In lieu of reaching for cookies or potato chips come snack time, opt for heart-healthy raisins instead.
Whole grains help men and women maintain healthy
weights while lowering their risk for heart disease, making them perfect dietary additions for anyone who resolves to lose weight and protect their heart in the year ahead. According to the American Heart Association, whole grains, such as whole wheat, oats/oatmeal, rye, barley and brown rice, are great sources of dietary fiber, while refined grains like white rice and enriched bread contain little fiber. That's an important distinction, as dietary fiber can improve blood cholesterol levels and lower risk of heart disease and stroke.
Tomatoes. Researchers at Boston's Tufts University analyzed
more than a decade's worth of data in an effort to discover the effects of lycopene, which is the antioxidant responsible for giving tomatoes their familiar red color, on the cardiovascular system. They ultimately discovered that people who regularly consumed foods with lycopene over an 11-year period reduced their risk of coronary heart disease by 26 percent. The lycopene found in tomatoes may be even more accessible when they are cooked. Aspiring to eat healthier is a goal for many people come the dawn of a new year. azhealthandliving.com |December 2015

Ways to Protect Your Identity Identity theft is a pervasive problem. According to figures from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, an estimated 17.6 million people, or about 7 percent of U.S. residents age 16 or older, were victims of at least one incident of identity theft in 2014. Identity theft is not just a problem within U.S. borders, either. Victims may be subjected to various types of identity theft. Attempted misuse of an existing account is the prime complaint. This account can be a credit card, bank account, phone or utility account. No matter the type of fraud perpetrated, many identity theft victims endure a direct financial loss as a result. Sometimes individuals do not find out they've been the victim of identity theft until they are notified by a financial institution - or even after filing their taxes - when money already has been lost. People may invest in expensive services to protect their identities, but Consumer Reports notes this tactic is not always necessary. There are other, less expensive ways for men and women to protect themselves from identity theft.
Guard personal information Do not share your personal information over the Internet unless you are on a secured site. This will be identified by the https:// preceding the rest of the URL. Sometimes a padlock symbol will appear somewhere on the page. Also, do not provide any personal information over the phone, such as tax identification numbers, bank account information or your maiden name. Personal data should be shared only with trusted companies whose authenticity you can verify.
Watch your wallet
Lock down devices Make sure computers and mobile devices are secured with a password, and only use secured networks when going online. Select strong passwords that include a combination of numbers, letters and symbols, as well as case changes so they will be more difficult to crack.
Get off credit-card offer lists
Sign up for alerts
You can stop credit bureaus from selling your name to lenders by going to www.optoutprescreen.com or calling 888-567-8688. Opting out should prevent the majority of offers from coming your way. Many identity theft cases can be linked to crooks stealing credit card preapprovals from mailboxes. Similarly, you can put a security freeze on credit reports, so that lenders will not be able to access credit reports and issue new credit.
Many financial institutions will offer free online or mobile alerts to warn of suspicious activity on your account. Take advantage of this service.
Identity theft can lead to plenty of paperwork hassle and loss of funds. Preventing it from happening is easier than you might think.
Do not leave your wallet or purse unattended. Keep the bare minimum in a wallet so a thief does not have access to all of your personal information if the wallet is lost or stolen. Keep your Social Security card and rarely used credit cards at home.

Protect Your Money While Traveling
Many vacations and business trips go off without a hitch, but not all travelers are so fortunate. One of the inherent risks of travel is being victimized by theft or losing money as a result of personal carelessness. When traveling, it's important to think about dollars and cents - or Euros and yuans - in addition to packing, sightseeing and lodging. This includes considering how to pay for the trip, both before you leave and after you arrive at your destination.
Credit cards. Many people prefer to use credit cards when
booking flights or making hotel reservations because credit cards often have built-in security features. These may include insurance against canceled trips or easy refund policies. Credit cards also can be advantageous when traveling internationally. According, to the resource group The Independent Traveler purchase prices are exchanged at the interbank exchange rate. That rate may be more consumer-friendly and any fees, if your credit card company even charges fees, incurred may be less than the cost of converting your currency. Keep in mind that your standard credit card may not be accepted everywhere, as "chip-and-PIN" credit cards are now used in many countries. That may prohibit you from making purchases on credit cards with just magnetic strips. Keep a list of all important credit card phone numbers and account numbers when traveling, so you can promptly call companies if your card is lost or stolen.
Travelers' checks are another alternative to cash. Security is
provided against lost or stolen checks by the issuing party, which is typically a bank. Investopedia notes that travelers' checks that are stolen and identified are canceled and new ones are reissued.
Cash. Sometimes you may need cash when traveling, as
some retailers do not accept credit cards or checks. Stash cash safely, keep your wallet in a front pocket and use money storage accessories to hide money. Store cash in different places so thieves don't get all your cash should you be victimized. If your wallet is packed with cards, membership information and other personal details, clean it out before traveling or use a travel wallet. azhealthandliving.com |December 2015

Nicole Kidman A natural success
Australian-American actor and film producer Nicole Kidman has shined on stage and screen since childhood. Born in Hawaii to Australian parents, Kidman grew up in Australia but has won the hearts of fans across the globe.
“Nicole says she is as excited to step onto a film set today as she was on the day she started her first movie back in Australia,” cites Kidman’s official website, www.nicolekidmanofficial.com. “She believes she is incredibly blessed, not only because she has the career she dreamed of when she was a schoolgirl, but because it has exceeded her wildest expectations.” Kidman was active in the Australian entertainment industry as a child and teen. Her breakthrough roles to American audiences came in the late 1980s when she starred in Dead Calm and Bangkok Hilton, a TV miniseries. Other stand out performances include: Days of Thunder, Far and Away, Batman Forever, Moulin Rouge, The Hours, To Die For, Eyes Wide Shut, The Paperboy and many others. During her career, Kidman has appeared on both the big and small screens. She’s also expanded past traditional acting roles by lending her vocal talents to animated movies, starting her own production company called Blossom Films, and singing (she has some hit singles overseas). She’s also no stranger to awards; she’s won an Academy Award, a BAFTA Awards, a Critics' Choice Movie Award, three Golden Globes, two MTV Movie Awards, and several international honors, too. “I really think there’s a journey to be had,” Kidman says of the roles she’s taken to Vogue Magazine. “I suppose I kind of have this very spontaneous, nonstrategic [side], which is why I’ve had such a winding career. Even at my height, I wasn’t looking to maintain that. I was always looking for what I feel now—where do I want to go?” 50
December 2015 | azhealthandliving.com
In addition to her many projects, Kidman—who is a mom of four and married to country superstar Keith Urban—has been the face for several ad campaigns and is also known as an unofficial mentor of sorts for upand-coming Hollywood stars. Many media outlets also note how she’s approachable and does her best to live as normal of a life as possible in her home in Nashville. “I can read here,” she says to Vogue Magazine about her home in Tennessee. “I can write here. I can hike. I can take my kids to school. I can live the way I’ve always wanted to live... A life, a real life.” While things are sometimes quiet on the home front, several sources, including popular entertainment site The Wrap (www.thewrap.com) say that Kidman is set to star in an upcoming production of Wonder Woman. “While Kidman’s potential role has yet to be confirmed, the Queen of the Amazons in the Wonder Woman comics is Hyppolyta, who also happens to be Diana Prince’s biological mother — though it’s unclear whether the film will remain faithful to that storyline,” cites The Wrap. The film is slated to debut in 2017. Added to her busy schedule, Kidman is well-known for promoting a healthy lifestyle, including being the international face of Swisse, an Australian vitamin and supplement brand. “I joined Swisse because I wanted to help raise awareness of the importance of living a healthy lifestyle in a busy, often stressful world,” Kidman says in a recent statement. “I love feeling healthy and fit…” Kidman is also active in several charitable causes in both the U.S. and Australia. She’s been a UNICEF ambassador for decades and has been known to say, “I find trying to solve problems and save lives is far more important than my film career,” according to www.LookToTheStars.org. She’s also given back to breast cancer awareness nonprofits, women’s empowerment causes, the theatrical arts and several others. Wherever her career takes her next, we’re excited to see what 2016 holds for this star! azhealthandliving.com | December 2015

STAY HEALTHY
aging well By Marc Sarner, President of Wake Up Financial and Insurance Services, Inc., www.wakeupretirement.net
The Biggest Financial Mistake at the End of the Year As the end of the year approaches, we make plans to spend time with family and friends. Are we traveling somewhere for Christmas? Where are we going for New Year’s Eve? I find that many people think about their investments and re-evaluate goals. However, they don’t think to examine whether or not they can convert part of their IRA to a Roth IRA with little or no tax liability. That’s right. It is possible that you can convert your IRA with no tax consequence. If you are having a low-income year or are in retirement and have a large IRA balance, it is possible for you to convert part of it without incurring tax consequences. Why would you want to convert to a Roth IRA? Here are a few advantages to the Roth: • Withdrawals from a traditional IRA are taxed because you were able to defer taxes on that money when you made contributions to your account. Withdrawals from a Roth IRA aren’t taxed because the deposits into the account weren’t tax deductible. • Any growth in a Roth IRA is tax-free as long as it has grown for at least five years. • With a traditional IRA, when you reach age 70½ you must begin withdrawing a certain amount each year whether you want to or not. That’s called the Required Minimum Distribution. But with a Roth IRA, there is no Required Minimum Distribution so even at 70½ you can withdraw as much or as little as you like.
Advisors are hired to manage money and plan. When was the last time your advisor looked at your tax return to see how much money they can save you? This really isn’t an area they specialize in and they aren’t paid by you to focus on it.
You want to make sure you are talking to your tax specialist or a seasoned experienced advisor when looking at these options. One thing you can do is have them do a mock tax return to see the effect.
For pre-retirees and retirees, planning for retirement is more than picking investments that fit your goals. Retirement planning is about becoming financially independent. Including Roth IRA conversion as part of your end of the year game plan could save you thousands in the long run.
Why haven’t you heard of this before from your advisors? If you think about it, tax professionals are reacting to the previous year’s income and transactions. They are paid to do taxes.
You have until Dec. 31 to convert. If you end up doing too much, you can always re-characterize or reverse the transaction come tax time. However, if you don’t do enough, you can’t do more conversion.

The Social Security Dilemma Draw Now or Draw Later?
The temptation is great. Maybe too great for some. The federal government allows retirees to start drawing Social Security as early as age 62, a feature that more than 40 percent of Americans take advantage of as they gladly draw from the system they spent a lifetime paying into. But many of those people may be making a mistake. While you’re allowed to start drawing Social Security when you are 62, your monthly benefit will be reduced. Although there might be personal reasons why someone needs to apply early, for most people it’s probably better to wait at least until their full retirement age. Full retirement age is between 66 and 67 for most people in the workforce right now. Wait until you are 70, and the amount of your monthly check goes up even more. When it comes to Social Security, though, there’s a financial monkey wrench that can complicate sorting out your plan. Social Security rules can be complicated and even your spouse’s income and decisions can affect when the most opportune time is for you to draw benefits. You really are going to want to coordinate what you do with what your spouse does, to make sure you are getting the highest amount possible. Here are a few points to remember if you’re considering claiming your Social Security at 62:
Reduction of benefit. Depending when your full retirement age is, you would see about a 25 to 30 percent reduction in your benefit if you retire at 62. On the other hand, if you delay collecting past full retirement age, you can increase your benefit by 8 percent a year up until you are 70.
Life expectancy. One reason many people opt to draw the money early is they fear they will die before they get a chance to receive anything at all from Social Security. After a lifetime of paying into the system, they won’t get a penny out of it. They don’t want to feel cheated out of what they have coming to them. That’s certainly a concern. But there’s an even greater concern than dying early, and that’s living too long. Life expectancies are growing, but many people have not saved 62

enough to see them through a retirement that could last two or three decades or longer. If you live a long life, it could be crucial to you that the monthly Social Security payment be as large as possible.
Continuing to work. You could be in for a surprise if you plan to continue working after you begin drawing Social Security. If you haven’t waited until your full retirement age, there’s a limit on how much you can make. In 2015 that limit is $15,720, according to the Social Security Administration. If you go over that, you would be deducted $1 in benefits for every $2 you earn over the limits. (That changes in the year you reach full retirement age, and beginning with the month you are at full retirement age there is no limit on your earnings.) Many factors come into play when you’re trying to decide when to begin drawing Social Security. That’s especially true if you have a spouse and need to factor them into the equation. It’s worthwhile to seek professional advice so you can get the most favorable result.
Cut the Costs of Your Prescriptions By MS
The costs of filling prescriptions is simply too big to bear for many people, even now that the Affordable Care Act has greatly reduced the amount of people who are uninsured. A survey from the Commonwealth Fund found that 35 million people in America failed to fill a prescription in 2014 because of the cost of the medication. That figure represents an improvement from 2010, when 48 million people did not fill their prescriptions due to the costs of those medications, but it still serves to highlight a need many people have to cut the costs of their medicine.
Change Your Thoughts. Change Your Words. Change Your World. Sponsored by
Though people who cannot afford to fill their prescriptions often feel helpless, there are a handful of ways they can cut the costs of their medications and start feeling better.
Discuss changes with your physician. Brand-name
drugs are typically more expensive than generic alternatives, so speak with your physician about generic drugs or less costly brand-name drugs that may treat your condition as well as expensive brand-name drugs do.
Consider Patient Assistance Programs. Sometimes
referred to as "Pharmaceutical Assistance Programs," Patient Assistance Programs, or PAPs, can greatly reduce the burden of prescription drug costs. Sponsored by pharmaceutical companies, PAPs distribute billions of dollars to patients who otherwise could not afford their medications. Eligibility criteria varies depending on the program, but men and women struggling to pay for their prescriptions can speak with their physicians about PAPs.
Consult your member organizations. Look for no-fee
cards, such as those offered to AAA and AARP members or others offered by nonprofit organizations, before considering options offered by pharmaceutical companies or other forprofit businesses.
Contact charitable organizations. Some charitable organizations, such as the National Organization for Rare Disorders and maybe even some local nonprofits, offer prescription assistance to people in need. Visit NORD online at www.rarediseases.org.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver named Jesus—you will make it to a place called success.” – Author Unknown
