"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.
"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp
NORTH PHOENIX Charles I. Hecht M.D., FACS Dr. Hecht received his M.D. degree from State University of New York Upstate Medical University. He did his residency in General Surgery at Ohio State University Hospital. He has performed major surgeries at the area hospitals for over 25 years before joining Arizona Vein & Laser Institute to dedicate to the treatment of venous disease.

Relief is right here in the West Valley Dr. Kukurin was named a Top Chiropractor by the Consumers Research Council of America. He is listed in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare. With over 20 years of experience using acupuncture, chiropracticand science based nutritional therapies, the results produced by our methods have been featured on local TV newscasts, published in scientific journals, indexed in the National Library of Medicine and have been presented Knee Pain at medical conferences at Johns Hopkins and the Peripheral Nerve Society.
Diabetic Neuropathy, Peripheral Neuropathy Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis If you are suffering from lower back, buttocks and or leg pain or your feet or legs are cramping, numb or burning especially at night, you almost certainly have a condition which involves the nerves of the legs. The largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve (pictured in red to the right), starts in the lower back, runs through the muscles of the buttocks and down to the tip of the toes. If this nerve gets irritated, you can experience really terrible pain anywhere along the course of the nerve. You may also experience burning, numbness and odd sensations in your muscles. Irritation of this nerve may produce severe cramping or crawling sensations in your muscles. Of course, your back and leg pain can be caused by a pinched nerve in your lower back. This can be from a vertebra that is out of place, it can be caused by a slipped disc or it can be caused by spinal stenosis or any combination of these problems. Each of these conditions, bad discs, spinal stenosis or displaced vertebrae have very different treatments. Knowing exactly why you have your back and leg troubles is absolutely essential for effective care.
Headaches, Vertigo, TMJ, Migraines, Sinus Headache Neck and Shoulder Pain, Pinched Nerves, Tennis Elbow and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Spinal Stenosis, Sciatica, Lower Back, Hip and Leg Pain
So how do you find results? The answer is called Integrative Neurology. Neurology is the study of the nerves. This allows us to diagnose tough nerve conditions like spinal stenosis, disc problems and neuropathy. What happens next truly separates our integrative neurology approach from anything else available to help correct lower back, hip, leg and foot problems. We have pioneered techniques to decompress nerves, but also use a number of natural substances that have been shown in recent scientific studies to help nerves re-grow and repair. There are no current drugs that can do this. But that’s not all. We combine special electrical stimulation techniques with acupuncture. A combination that has been shown to correct abnormal nerve function and promote nerve repair. There simply is no better or more comprehensive system for diagnosing and correcting the cause of spinal stenosis, neuropathy and other conditions that cause lower back, hip and leg pain and numbness. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.” ~Psalm 32:8 Welcome to our January issue. Many have started the year with New Year resolutions, while others may still be holding on to some from prior years. Stop recycling your resolutions – and start the New Year meditating on God’s word for your best year ever! Last year is gone- let go, let God! Thank and praise God for this new opportunity to make a fresh start! Here are a few Bible verses to inspire a fresh start with God in 2017:
Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope..
Romans 8:28
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Ephesians 4:22-24
Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Matthew 6:33-34
Ezekiel 36:25-27
Psalm 51:10-11
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Philippians 3:13-15
Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.
Joshua 1:8
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
James 1:25
But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
Isaiah 40:31
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Colossians 3:23-24
And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. Until next time, Wishing you and yours a Happy New Year filled with many blessings! God Bless You for Your Support!

The Mighty PC
Local company makes computers “good as new” and accessible to all Ken and Linda Chan were teaching basic computers skills to young children in 2011 when families kept asking them where they could find low-cost PCs (personal computers). The young brother and sister tech team came up with the idea of reconditioning older laptops and desktops and making them “good as new” for consumers. What started as a hobby for the computer teachers is now a rapidly growing business based in Chandler selling more than 150 PCs per month to businesses and families nationwide. The duo has sold more than 3,000 computers since 2012. Formerly known as Ironman Refurbished Business Computers (IRBC), the newly rebranded “The Mighty PC” customizes top consumer rated HP and Dell used business grade laptops and desktops chosen for their reliability and durability. Customers can call or text the company and get a customized PC, loaded with anti-virus and office software, delivered to their door throughout the Valley or picked up by appointment at their Chandler warehouse. Orders outside the Phoenix metro area are shipped for free. Each PC includes a one-year limited warranty and unlimited technical support.
Yost, discovered The Mighty PC on Facebook. According to Peggy, “They took the time to explain to us what was on the laptop we purchased and they are the nicest people you will ever meet.” Robert Leibmann, owner of Scottsdale Chiropractic, adds that, “We have been using Ken and Linda’s services for more than two years and everything has worked flawlessly.”
“We want to make it easy for anyone to get a computer to meet their specifications at a discounted price but with the extra benefit of free delivery,” Ken Chan says. “It’s all about providing a great customer experience.” Buyers also receive a tutorial on each PC purchased that explains its features.
The Chans were also recently contacted on Facebook by a Jerome school district looking for a large quantity of PCs. “As teachers, we understand the tight budgets that districts and educators face. Social media is helping us get the word out to schools and businesses,” says Linda Chan.
The company has been a hit locally and has a strong following on social media. One El Mirage senior couple, Tom and Peggy
The Mighty PC purchases the units to refurbish from reputable suppliers. Each unit received is examined and tested for quality and then customized to order. “Calling a computer ‘used’ has a negative connotation. Some people feel that newer computers are better, but you can upgrade an older model and get a completely functional, fast, PC at a much lower price. We like to consider our PCs as repurposed. What we do also helps cut down on ewaste—for excess electronics—which is a growing problem,” Linda says. Last year the two launched a new ecommerce website and began developing strategic relationships with computer service providers nationwide. “We currently don’t service computers other than the ones we sell. These partnerships will let us offer our customers a more complete solution,” says Ken.

The Impact of a Wish
Make-A-Wish Arizona grants wishes to those battling life-threatening medical conditions Around 10 years ago during the holiday season, Casper, then 4 years old, could not get out of bed to meet Santa. It was an unusual occurrence for the lively little boy, so his family headed to the hospital to see what might be keeping little Casper down. Casper was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF). A family was changed forever. “We took it in stride but it has definitely made a difference,” says Lori, Casper’s mother. “Now, we are constantly looking for ways to make sure that Casper can do the things he wants to do, even with his condition.” Now 10 years later, Casper, now 14, conducts his own research into new methods of controlling his CF. A study on surfers in Australia caught his eye and eventually crafted his one true wish. “I saw new research that came from studying a surfer community in Australia that said inhaling hypertonic saline solution could help CF patients,” says Casper. “The surfers had better lung function than any other CF patient. Once I heard that, I started learning to surf at surf camps but it wasn’t enough. When Make-A-Wish Arizona came to tell me I could have a wish, I wished to see the best surfing waves in the world and where the study happened. I wanted to see if surfing in Australia could help me too.”
Make-A-Wish Arizona is no stranger to wishes that take wish kids half way around the world. The organization also loves wishes that involve learning, like Casper’s wish, and wishes that truly can impact a child’s life. “For the past 36 years, our mission has been simple: to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy,” says Elizabeth Reich, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish Arizona. “As the chapter that started Make-A-Wish, we know the power our mission can have. After all, one little Phoenix boy’s wish to be a police officer created a worldwide network of wish granters.” Started in 1980 in Phoenix, Make-A-Wish Arizona has plans to grant 380 wishes in Arizona this fiscal year. This is an increase over the 365 wishes the organization granted last fiscal year. In total, the chapter has granted more than 5,000 wishes in its 36-year history.

“Wishes are big. Wishes are personal. Wishes are things that children believe are unattainable. And together, with more than 700 volunteers across the state, our chapter makes wishes happen,” says Reich. And wishes make a difference. Just ask Casper. “I was really excited to get to go, and to know I was going to surf in Sydney and snorkel at the Great Barrier Reef,” says Casper. “I had no idea how great it would be.” Casper and his family toured the Great Barrier Reef, went zip lining in Daintree Rainforest, had breakfast with birds at the Wildlife Habitat, snuggled with some koala bears and, of course, went surfing on Manly Beach. “I thought they were just going to give us some boards and send us out there, and we would have to figure it out, but they gave us lessons,” says Casper. “We surfed for about an hour each day and I got up a few times.” But a great day of surfing is not all the family took away from the trip. “Every day, Casper is fighting for his life so it was good to just be somewhere where we could enjoy each other and relax as a family,” says Lori.
Casper agrees. “Twice a day, every day, I have to do a 30minute breathing treatment with a heavy machine that means I have to lie still and just look at whatever,” he says. “In Australia, I was doing my treatments while looking at the ocean or the rainforest and hearing the waves. It was so cool to have that happen. To be there, with my treatments, but to know I was there for something better. It totally was a wish come true.”

They believe in donating their time and resources to nonprofits that will “break the cycle.” Whether that’s homelessness, hunger, children’s medical research or education, they are both committed to helping organizations solve problems. Karas is the 2016-2017 Board President for PANDA. In addition to her current position, in just five years, she has served PANDA on the Underwriting Committee, chaired the Silent Auction Committee, and chaired the Children Helping Children Fashion Show. “I just did what I was asked,” Karas says. “I took on a leadership role because they have done so much for my son and our family. I would do whatever it would take to help PANDA and all the families who are searching for answers.” The Karas’ son was diagnosed with severe allergies and asthma along with other conditions that come along with both. They searched for answers for more than a year before their journey lead them to Steele Children’s Research Center in Tucson. Karas was currently a PANDA member when she recalls asking a simple question to a doctor in a hallway after a meeting. She says, “It was their willingness to help that led us to Steele. They gave us hope. We became a patient when our son was almost two years old and now he’s thriving. We’ve been able to reduce his medications and create a treatment plan to manage his condition. We are so happy that the doctors at Steele were able to help and didn’t just tell us to accept a stagnant diagnosis.” 18 January 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
Since its founding, PANDA has raised more than $7.25 million to improve treatments and cures for devastating childhood diseases as well as fund and recruit internationally recognized pediatric physicians and scientists to Arizona, providing local families with the most cutting-edge medical care. As board president, Karas enjoys collaborating with the allwomen board that includes professionals and community leaders from all walks of life. “It’s empowering to be surrounded by smart, driven and passionate women. We all are working toward the same goal and it’s amazing how much we can accomplish together.” “I want to continue to evolve the organization by raising awareness about the amazing work Steele Children’s Research Center is doing,” she adds. “They are an incredible resource and their reach extends far past Tucson. Their research and work is being shared with doctors across the United States and the world. We really hope corporations and individuals will support our 18th annual Children Helping Children Fashion Show and Luncheon on Saturday, March 25, thus, improving the lives of our most vulnerable, sick children.” Over the last two years the event raised well over $2 million dollars. Proceeds from this year’s Luncheon will fund the Children’s Autoimmunity and Allergies Project, which seeks to help unravel the mystery of common autoimmune issues among children. Cognitive Decline Provides Another Reason to Quit Smoking Smokers have scores of reasons to give up the habit. In addition to contributing to cardiovascular disease, lung cancer and other lung ailments, cancers elsewhere in the body, wrinkled skin and diseases of the eyes, nose and mouth, smoking may also contribute to cognitive decline. There's growing evidence suggesting that using cigarettes can affect the brain in negative ways, including causing cognitive decline as early as age 45. According to the study "Impact of Smoking on Cognitive Decline in Early Old Age," led by Severine Sabia, as published in the journal Archives of General Psychiatry, smoking is a possible risk factor for dementia, although the impact smoking has on the brain may have been underestimated in elderly populations because of the general shorter life span of smokers. Study participants were given a battery of tests in memory, vocabulary, and executive function that included reasoning and fluency, and a global cognitive score. Both men and women participated (5,099 men and 2,137 women, with a mean age of 56), and smoking history was recorded over the 10-year assessment period. An analysis revealed that a cognitive decline occurred in all tests except vocabulary among all participants, but mostly in men. However, faster cognitive decline was observed among current smokers compared with those who had never smoked. The size of the effect associated with smoking was similar to that of 10 years of aging. Findings are similar to other research being done on the topic of smoking and its impact on the brain. The Alzheimer's Society states that smoking is bad for the heart, lungs and vascular system - including the blood vessels that feed oxygen and nutrients to the brain. Recent research has shown that smoking is a significant risk factor for vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease, with smokers twice as likely to develop the disease as nonsmokers. The Mayo Clinic defines vascular dementia as problems with reasoning, planning, judgement, memory, and other thought processes caused by brain damage from impaired blood flow to the brain. Factors that increase the risk for vascular dementia are high cholesterol and smoking. Dementia can be brought on by stroke, whether it's a large stroke or a series of mini-strokes. WebMD says vascular dementia can occur over time as "silent" strokes build up something that seems to occur more readily in smokers and those with cardiovascular disease. 30 January 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
Symptoms of cognitive decline that may result from smoking and vascular dementia can include: · Problems with short-term memory · Wandering or getting lost · Trouble managing money · Difficulty planning or following through on activities · Loss of bladder or bowel control · Delusions or hallucinations · Inappropriate emotions · Impaired coordination or balance More research is needed with regard to the association between smoking and cognitive decline related to dementia. If research continues to prove a correlation, greater warning may be issued about smoking and its effect on parts of the body beyond the heart and lungs. Even at this early junction, current research suggests yet another reason to quit lighting up.
Immunotherapy: Another Weapon Against Cancer By MS
A cancer diagnosis can be devastating to individuals and their families. Upon being diagnosed with cancer, patients may not know what lies ahead, including their prognosis for survival. Battling cancer may not be easy, but cancer researchers continue to look for ways to attack cancer cells and improve the prognosis for men and women diagnosed with the disease. In the United States, cancer death rates have been on the decline since the early 1990s. The National Cancer Institute's most recent Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, published in March 2016, states that cancer death rates have decreased by 1.8 percent per year among men, 1.4 percent per year among women, and 2.0 percent per year among children up to 19 years of age through 2013. Numerous factors, including immunotherapy, are contributing to those lower death rates. Understanding immunotherapy can help cancer patients and their families gain a better grasp on treatment.
What is immunotherapy? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body's immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.
Immune checkpoint inhibitors: These drugs rev up the
Types of immunotherapy
immune system, which helps it recognize and attack cancer cells.
Certain cancers respond better to immunotherapy than others. Also, different types of immunotherapy may be more effective than others. The following are some of the types of treatment doctors may prescribe.
Monoclonal antibodies: These are drugs that are designed to bind to specific targets in the body. They can cause an immune response that destroys cancer cells. Other monoclonal antibodies (targeted therapy) mark cancer cells so that the immune system can seek and destroy them.
Adoptive cell transfer: The National Cancer Institute says adoptive cell transfer attempts to boost the natural ability of T cells to fight cancer. T cells are a type of white blood cell and part of the immune system.
Cytokines: These proteins are made by the body's cells and play important roles in the body's normal immune responses. They also influence the immune system's ability to respond to cancer. The two main types of cytokines used to treat cancer are interferons and interleukins. Physicians will discuss various cancer therapies and treatments, including immunotherapy, upon diagnosing a patient with cancer. Side effects to immunotherapy may include pain, swelling, soreness, redness, itchiness and rash. Flu-like symptoms also are possible as the body attacks the cancer cells. Immunotherapy is given orally, topically and intravenously. Patients can discuss how often treatment will be administered and whether immunotherapy offers their best chances for beating the disease. azhealthandliving.com | January 2017

CONNECT WITHIN
MIND, BODY & spirIT By Dr. Richard R. Reichel, award-winning film director, producer and author of Everybody is an Actor, www.everybodyisanactor.com
How to Overcome Stage Fright in Your Life More confidence, less stress, discovering inner resources, improving relationships – there are thousands of self-help books to help us accomplish these, but do they work? Self-help strategies can work, as far as they go, but they don’t address a key component that affects everything from how we feel about ourselves to how successfully we interact with others. That key component is the fact that we’re all actors – at work, school, home, even alone in front of the bathroom mirror. We’re always playing the character of ‘Me,’ but we also have to play other characters. The better we are at it, the happier and more successful we’ll be. But just like anyone who steps before an audience, sometimes we’re paralyzed by stage fright. Stage fright undermines concentration and we lose our character objective. Why do so many people cower in light of their dreams? Why do they procrastinate on getting their degree? Why do they tremble at the thought of approaching Mr. or Ms. Right? It’s because of stage fright. To overcome it, here are a few tips:
Control stress with a “mind walk” and “confocal contemplation.” Today, stress is associated with a variety of chronic illnesses. In addition to regular exercise and sleep nourishment, consider a “mind walk,” or a pleasant thought that stops the stress and replaces it with something positive. In the same vein, practice “confocal contemplation” by allowing your mind to wander into a cloudlet of peace and relaxing your body. Then, while thoughts are peacefully drifting, flex your feet, ankles, calves, shins, knees, buttocks and hips – and release. Feel the weight of your entire body while your mind remains free, and repeat the exercise.
Practice projecting your emotions. How many times
have you daydreamed about how you will express yourself when a particular situation arises? In the same way, we need to rehearse how we project our emotions in social situations. Try practicing emotional expression in front of a trusted friend or loved one. If someone has made you happy and joyous, rehearse how to show them in the moment. Showing love and laughter can strengthen bonds, and learning how to express anger, sorrow and fear in appropriate ways will improve your ability to communicate and foster understanding. 32 January 2017| azhealthandliving.com
Winning your audience by emphasizing character strengths. No one is good at everything, but everyone is
good at something. In order to get what you want in life, you simply need to do what you’re good at. Your audience may be an employer, co-workers, family or a potential date. Can you make them laugh, understand, or otherwise feel deeply what you’re expressing? Appealing to their emotional responses can go far. Keep in mind the hearts and minds of your audience, including the setting and what they must be experiencing during the “performance.” Be aware of your vocal projection and body language. You will be remembered for your performance, which will lead you to better roles and, in the case of daily living, better relationships.
Tips for Realizing Goals in the Year Ahead By MS
While people who make New Year's resolutions fully intend to realize those goals, few actually stick to the game plan. According to researchers at the University of Scranton, just 8 percent of people who make their New Year's resolutions actually achieve those resolutions. While that might make it seem like the odds are against men and women who have resolved to improve their lives in the year ahead, the following tips can help adults realize their goals for the new year and beyond.
Emphasize time management. Finding ways to manage time more effectively can make it easier to stay committed to New Year's resolutions. Right down your daily schedule and look for ways to free up time. If you routinely take an hour for lunch each day, use that time to exercise and eat at your desk when you return from your walk, workout or jog. Try to wake up 30 to 60 minutes earlier each morning to exercise, and make use of time before bed by preparing a healthy lunch for the following day.
Make your goals public. By publicly declaring your intention to improve your life, you're putting some positive pressure on yourself to fully commit to your goal. Once you have decided on a resolution, post your short-term and long-term goals to your Facebook page, or let your immediate family and closest friends know of your goals in person. Their encouragement can help you stay on track, and they may even offer to help you realize your goals.
Keep track of your progress. Keep a resolutions journal or start a blog that allows you to write about your efforts. If your goal is to pay down debt, make a spreadsheet that tracks your progress. Writing about your trials and errors can help others and also provide a great way for you to explore your approach and tinker with it to ensure your ultimate success. azhealthandliving.com |January 2017

for a person the longer it goes untreated. Many people who live with hearing loss tell themselves it is not bad enough to do something about it. In fact, the average person who has trouble hearing waits on average 7 -10 years before seeing an audiologist to have it treated. Untreated hearing loss can lead to auditory deprivation which can cause the hearing nerve to shut down over time. If the hearing nerve shuts down from lack of auditory stimulation, chances of hearing aids helping are very slim. If hearing aids are worn after the nerve ceases to function, the biggest complaint is clarity. In these situations, the only option is a surgically implanted hearing device. Recent studies also show that untreated hearing loss is now raising the risk for the early onset of dementia, due to lack of stimulation, which ultimately results in cognitive decline. When you deprive your ears from hearing, you are also depriving your brain from processing environmental sounds, speech and cognition. Your brain processes sound binaurally (from both sides), so not keeping both sides of the brain active can create cognitive load (straining to hear) and can lead to cognitive decline. By keeping all the areas of the brain functioning to their full potential, the risk of dementia decreases.

Too often these exercises prove to be inadequate leaving the patient unsteady and at risk of falling.
Q. What is the cause of varicose and spider veins? How can they be treated? A. Varicose veins are incompetent veins that
appear under the skin and are usually blue in color. They can become enlarged due to pooling of blood. This occurs when the valves in the veins fail to keep the blood flowing in one direction that is towards the heart. This condition causes pain and swelling, night cramps, change in skin color and severe cases ulcers. Risk factors for AMD include smoking, family history, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
AMD comes in two forms: dry and wet. The majority of AMD cases are dry form, but the wet form is more severe and damaging. The wet form is treated via injection of pharmaceuticals into the eye to prevent leaky retinal blood vessels. Unfortunately, there is no treatment for the more common dry form, but certain ocular nutritional supplements have been shown Risks factors include the female sex, for through research to benefit patients with cancer of the thyroid arises more often in intermediate and advanced dry AMD. women than in men. disordered breathing is to open the airway to allow a sufficient amount of oxygen into the lungs and bloodstream. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) was thought for many years to be the “gold standard” of treatment for sleepdisordered breathing. CPAP consists of a mask that fits over the mouth and/or nose using a tube to connect to an air compressor next to the bed. The compressor forces air into the tube and mask, thus shooting air into the nose and/or mouth, forcing the airway to open from the pressure of the air compressor. This mode of treatment is best discussed with your physician. Surgery, such as tongue reduction, surgical removal of the soft tissue at the back of the throat, removal of the uvula, modification of the palate, etc., is another treatment option. Surgery is performed in-office or at a hospital by an ENT or oral surgeon. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine does not consider surgery an effective long-term treatment for sleep-disordered breathing, and surgical procedures are considered only 30 to 50 percent effective.
Oral appliance therapy has become a viable, scientifically based treatment option for sleep-disordered breathing. Oral appliances hold the jaw in a position that allows the airway to remain as patent as possible during sleep. They are similar to athletic mouth guards, but are less bulky and completely noninvasive. Experts Answering Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I lost a tooth, why should I get a dental implant? A. Tooth loss can occur at any time. A
tooth knocked out by injury, a decayed tooth, or a tooth loosened by gum disease, must be replaced as soon as possible. Although some may think that they can avoid replacement of a tooth that is not a visible, front tooth, it is not in your best interest. Teeth need to be replaced for more than esthetic reasons; there are also issues of health and function. • Dental implants are designed to look like your own natural teeth. Decades of implant dentistry technology research and design can render a beautiful replication of your teeth. Your implants will go undetected. • Dental implants preserve bone health. When a tooth is lost, bone deterioration begins but an implant serves as a substitute for your tooth root, stimulating the bone and halting the degradation process. • Dental implants function better than any removable prosthetic due to their inherent stability. While you may worry that your denture or partial denture may slip or shift, you need never worry about security when you opt for dental implants. It is important to note that when you lose a tooth, the surrounding teeth will move to fill the space so even if you lose a back tooth, if you neglect to replace it, you could end up with large spaces or crooked, shifting teeth. This can result in bite problems or issues with your jaw. Worse still, the opposing tooth will grow longer to fill the space.
Q. What is a Brazilian Butt Lift? A. One of the fastest growing trends in plastic surgery is the Brazilian Butt Lift. Patients are actively seeking to get curves in all the right places, and the buttocks are no exception. What is this trendy plastic surgery procedure anyway? Brazilian Butt Lift is the nickname for transferring fat from other parts of the body and placing it in the buttocks. Using liposuction, the surgeon will harvest fat from areas of your body like the abdomen, waist and hips to create a smaller midsection. From there, the surgeon will inject your fat into areas of the buttocks that are flat or where more projection is desired. Brazilian Butt Lift can turn your stubborn areas of unwanted fat into the hourglass figure many patients desire. It is important to understand that not all forms of liposuction can be used in the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure. Liposuction procedures that destroy fat cells cannot be used. For example, laser assisted liposuction melts and destroys fat cells. Fat cells need to be alive to have a successful outcome when transferred. Traditional liposuction and Tickle Liposuction are commonly used for the Brazilian Butt Lift because the fat cells are not destroyed in the fat harvesting process. A plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery should be the only surgeon to trust with this trendy plastic surgery procedure. It is also important to have an in-office consultation and physical exam to determine if you are a candidate.
Q. Is it common to use acupuncture in animals? A. Veterinary acupuncture has been used for more than 2,000 years in China. In the United States, it became popular during the 1970s, and has become much more common and accessible during the last decade. In Arizona, the practice of veterinary acupuncture is restricted to licensed veterinarians. The lack of research explaining how acupuncture works can make some Westerntrained veterinarians initially hesitant. While there is a growing body of evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of acupuncture for pain and musculoskeletal injuries, there is not much published evidence to support its use for other conditions. However, trained practitioners usually find their patients improving after acupuncture therapy, and most animals tolerate it extremely well. Although they may be nervous at first, acupuncture typically promotes a calming response. Combining Eastern and Western medicine gives us better results for our patients than either one alone, and, when our patients feel better, we feel better. Q. Can diet affect inflammation and pain?
Q. What can I do to feel healthier, happier, and more balanced?
A. Considerable scientific information and clinical observation have accumulated in recent years showing that chronic pain–particularly the debilitating, severe form requiring opioid treatment–needs a “chronic pain" diet. It is important to involve a multidisciplinary treatment approach to treating chronic pain. Part of this may include nutritional counseling. Diet-induced pro-inflammatory mediator release can contribute to dietary injury. For example, a pro-inflammatory diet may include foods with a hyperglycemic index/load, such as bread and refined sugar. In addition, foods that are high in omega 6 fatty acids such as corn, sunflower, safflower, and peanut oils create more inflammation. Other factors include trans-fatty acids, low magnesium intake, low potassium intake, low phytonutrient intake, low inflammatory gut microbiota, and low serum levels of vitamin D. Conversely the anti-inflammatory diet group would include fish, lean meats, skinless chicken, omega 3 eggs, vegetables, fruit, sweet potatoes, raw nuts, dark chocolate, red wine and stout beer, coffee and tea, ginger, turmeric, garlic and other spices as well as olive oil, coconut oil and butter.
A. Many of us struggle to balance work, family, wellness, and the practical necessities of life. The beginning of the year is a great time to incorporate a mind-body exercise into your lifestyle.
Multiple cells are involved in a release of inflammatory mediators, which lead to the cellular communication that can generate pain in somatic tissues, such as joint, muscle, disc, ligament, tendon, fascia or epineurium. This communication is complex.
Yoga, tai chi, and qi gong are now considered very mainstream, and unite mindfulness and meditation with physical activity. Practitioners of mind-body exercise have better moods and mental health, and they enjoy more restful sleep compared to participants in other forms of exercise. Meditation also leads to activation in areas of the brain for self-regulation, problemsolving, self-realization and adaptive behavior. Just 15 minutes of self or videoled mind-body exercise can be beneficial. While tai chi and qi gong are slow-moving, sequenced postures done while standing, yoga classes can range from meditative to highly vigorous and physically taxing. This makes finding the right mind-body exercise possible for anyone. So love yourself, and shape up for a new, balanced quality of life.
A. Many people today are displeased with aspects of their body but are not willing to risk aggressive or painful procedures to get results. Diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle should always be a starting point, but sometimes we need a "kick start" or a little help to speed up results. Furthermore, with aging and weight loss, we need to consider skin tightening when losing weight. Fortunately, there a number of non-invasive and highly effective procedures that will enable individuals to achieve their desired results with no downtime and minimal discomfort. If losing inches is the goal then FDA approved non-invasive body contouring procedures, such as Sculpsure, can achieve significant results. Body contouring and fat reduction with one of our fat cell freezing or fat cell heating devices can permanently de-bulk large areas or sculpt your body the way you want. With both of these devices we are able to address almost any area of the body.
The information contained in this article is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, care or treatment. Always consult your doctor or other qualified health care provider with any questions regarding any possible medical condition.
If cellulite or skin tightening is the primary concern then we recommend Velashape™ III; its powerful deep thermal energy irons out cellulite and helps to tighten skin. It can also be combined with body contouring for amazing results. If a double chin is your concern, then Kybella injectable treatments can help. Other concerns such as wrinkly saggy knees or stretch marks can be addressed with Sublative RF, Ultherapy or microneedling. A consultation is always the best way to create an individualized bodycontouring plan.

Q. Why should I advertise my business? A. No matter how wonderful your service or product is, if you don't advertise, nobody will know. The goal of advertising should be to cost effectively reach the largest audience possible to attract new patients/ customers. If done correctly, advertising can be a wonderful investment; if done poorly, advertising can become financially draining.
Here are four tips to start a successful advertising plan:
1. Go after your target audience; in the right places! No product or service will appeal to everyone. Do research to understand who your audience is and determine what they read, watch and listen to. Find your market and be everything you can be to that audience. 2. Highlight your competitive advantage; what makes you unique? Find your competitive edge. Too many ads highlight all the features and services and fail to sell their specific benefits. Unless you highlight these benefits, how can you deliver value to potential patients/customers?
Q. Why not create a healthier you in the New Year?
Q. How can I help my parents be better organized in 2017?
A. Your body has the power to literally recreate itself from the way it is today, to a brand-new body. The reason people continue to suffer from the problems of aging, debilitating disease and sickness is because people continue to mistreat their body by putting the same unhealthy food in it.
A. Getting organized for a new year should include a review of, and updating wills and trusts.
Hippocrates, Father of Medicine said, "Let food be your medicine." For food to be your medicine, it must be healthy. A better solution is raw, living, unaltered, unpolluted food that brings life, health, and restoration to the physical body at the cellular level. A raw food easily digestible and especially nutritious; rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes. If we remove toxicity from 3. Establish your image. If your parents still have not set up a will, now would be a good time to discuss doing so. It is important that you know your parents’ wishes with regard to distribution of assets, but more importantly, you should know what they want in case of a medical emergency. A living will, power of attorney, medical power of attorney, and mental health care power of attorney should be established and you should know their funeral/burial plans. Now would also be a good time to talk about what they want when they can no longer live independently. There are many options for senior living and home care services that can help folks remain in their homes. Do your research while your parents are still able to make their own decisions. Locate facilities in your area to visit and talk to home care agencies in your area about their services. Being better organized means being prepared in case of a crisis. Q. Does Wildlife World have any baby Q. Is it too late to change my Medicare Advantage plan or do I have to wait animals in the winter? A. With more than 600 species on display, until next October? there's always new arrivals at Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium & Safari Park. We are excited to announce the birth of several new species including a pair of jaguar cubs. Jaguars are the largest feline found in the New World and ranks third in size behind lions and tigers. Males can grow to about 200 pounds and are known to have the strongest bite of any feline species. Their stocky build helps them climb with ease in their preferred rainforest habitat, enabling them to stalk and ambush prey. Our male cub is named Inti after the ancient Incan sun god and his fur is orange with black spots. His sister’s name is Killa, the moon goddess. A sizable fraction of the population, like Killa, is black with black spots. Jaguars have an extensive range throughout Central and South America and were once found throughout the desert Southwest, including Arizona. Jaguars, an endangered species, face an uncertain future because of habitat loss and fragmentation. Many are killed as a result of increasing human-animal conflicts over space and resources.
A. You mentioned October, referring to the
annual “Open Election Period” (OEP) between October 15 and December 7. During this 7-week window there are no restrictions to changes made to any Medicare plan. All changes made during this time period will be effective on January 1. However, every year between January 1 and February 14 Medicare provides a “Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period” (MADP). This 45-day period allows you to disenroll from an Advantage plan and return to traditional Medicare A and B and purchase a Stand Alone Prescription Drug plan (Part D). You will not be able to enroll in another Advantage plan until the next OEP unless you qualify for a Special Election Period (SEP). Outside of the “Open Election Period” Medicare requires an approved qualifying event before a plan change can be made. The following are the most common “qualifying events” that Medicare recognizes and will allow plan changes to be made: Change of residence determined by zip code, county or state. Chronic health conditions such as diabetes provide an SEP outside of the October December time frame.

BE PRESENT
PARENTING By Matt Stewart, an entrepreneur and co-founder of College Works Painting, www.collegeworks.com/about
Preparing Your Kids for the Business World Each year, parents send their sons and daughters off to college with high hopes that in four years – give or take – they will earn a degree and embark on successful careers. But while moms and dads may fret most about grades and study habits, they can give their offspring a real boost if they also insist the students carry some of the financial burden for college. That means getting a job – either during the school year or over the summer break, or both. College students are much more invested in the experience if they have to help pay for college, rather than have mom and dad take care of everything for them. There’s a natural tendency to work a little harder on classwork when at least a part of the tuition or dorm room costs come out of your own pocket. But beyond that personal-responsibility aspect, it’s worth noting that businesses are seeking job candidates with real-world work experience. Those on-the-job lessons are invaluable. For example, interns with College Works Painting operate their own house-painting business with hands-on guidance from mentors. The benefits for students of working their way through college include:
A regular paycheck. The rising cost of higher education has put paying the full price of college out of reach for many parents, and scholarships and grants often provide only a small percentage of the costs. The more students can pay themselves, the lower their student-loan debt will be when they enter the workforce. Practical experience. Nothing prepares you for work like work. A classroom can train students on certain skills necessary for their career choice, but on-the-job experience 44 January 2017

is just as valuable. Even if a part-time job is unrelated to career aspirations, a student might learn such skills as collaboration, time management and customer relations.
Resume enhancement. One of the weaknesses recent college graduates sometimes have is their resumes can be skimpy. A few summer jobs can help tremendously, giving managers who might consider hiring you more confidence that you have experience beyond listening to professorial lectures and cramming for final exams. Additional references. Hiring managers want to talk with people who know your work habits, and while it’s nice that a favorite professor or a high school football coach is willing to say good things, it’s even better to have references who can discuss relevant job skills. Having any job can be beneficial, but if you can you should try to land an especially challenging job or internship. When you graduate, you’re going to face stiff competition in the job market. The more you’ve been able to stretch yourself past your comfort zone and develop new skills, the greater the odds are that you’ll be the one picked out of all the applications that come pouring in.
Information for Young Parents to Include in Their Wills By MS
While no young parent wants to think of their own mortality, parents must have wills to ensure their families are taken care of how they see fit in the wake of their deaths. When devising a will, young parents should consult a legal professional to ensure they have covered all the bases. But the following is some of the basic information young parents should include in their wills.
Guardianship: Young parents should include instructions
regarding guardianship of their children should they pass away while the children are under the age of 18. Parents should not assume that their wishes regarding guardianship will be followed, even if those wishes had been expressed often. If no will has been written, laws may dictate that children go to a spouse or the deceased's closest relative.
Assets: Parents should be as specific as possible when dictating their wishes regarding their assets. Doing so will prevent disputes and ensure their assets are assigned exactly how they intended them to be.
Executor: This person ensures the deceased's wishes are
met and works with the deceased's attorney to ensure assets are allocated in adherence to the will. Before naming an executor, parents should first speak with the person to determine if they are willing to do so. The responsibility of serving as an executor is an enormous one, and parents' initial choice may already be serving as executor of another estate and not want the additional responsibility.
Trustee: Young parents who desire to establish a trust for
their children in the wake of their death also must name a trustee to oversee the assets left to their children if their children are too young to do so themselves. The responsibilities of a trustee are similar to those of an executor, but overseeing a trust can last considerably longer than executing a will. For example, trustees may be asked to manage investments and periodically disburse funds for children of the deceased, and such responsibilities can last decades. azhealthandliving.com |January 2017

STAY ACTIVE & FIT
FITNESS, NUTRITION & SPORTS By Cherie Calbom, nutritionist and author of The Juice Lady’s Guide to Fasting, www.juiceladycherie.com
Healthy Juicing Options for New Year Too much holiday cheer? Fatty foods, sweet treats, alcoholic drinks? Fear not! The New Year is your chance to hit the reset button and go healthy. One way to do that is to try a fast. You can lose at least a pound a day, get rid of foggy brain, and recharge your energy. Fasting is a great way to restart your metabolism, purify your lymphatic system, and revive your soul. It’s also a way to look younger, clear out the toxins, and restart the systems in your body for optimal health and physical wellbeing, and to bring restoration to your mind, body and spirit. People often think of fasting as a fad, but it’s been touted throughout history – by the healer Hippocrates, the philosopher Plato, and scientist and statesman Benjamin Franklin, just to name a few. Germany’s famous “fasting therapist,” Otto Buchinger Sr., M.D., called it an “operation without surgery.” Even those who don’t believe in fasting’s curative powers agree it can help prevent illness. Want to fend off the flu, a cold or bronchitis? Fasting gives your immune system a boost. It’s a lot like a threefold spring cleaning, as you dive deep into the areas in your life that don’t always get the attention they need – mentally, physically and spiritually – and you clean them up. You rid yourself of toxic influences that hinder growth, clarity and well-being and refocus on the future. If you’re a list maker (and who isn’t this time of year?), write down what you hope to achieve with your fast – losing belly fat, cleansing your liver or boosting your brain power, with brains detox juices for example – in order to find a fast that’s a good fit. If you aren’t sure you can hack a liquid fast because you’ll crave flavor, think again. Here are three recipes, designed to taste great while doing good:

How to Improve Overall Endurance By MS
It's one thing to resolve to get fit. It's another to continue to push physical boundaries time and again. Pushing oneself physically can be exhausting and demanding. But whether you're a seasoned athlete, a part-time fitness enthusiast, or even someone who lives a largely sedentary lifestyle, you can find ways to dig down and improve your overall endurance. The following are a handful of ways to push past physical glass ceilings and improve endurance.
Join a marathon. The statistics reporting site statisticsbrain.com states that only 0.5 percent of the U.S. and Canadian populations have ever run a marathon. Running on the treadmill at the gym or a couple of miles around the track is excellent exercise. Runners can take their passion a bit further by enrolling in any of the hundreds of marathons and half-marathons held annually. Crossing the finish line after running 26.2 miles is a rewarding feeling, and few activities do more to improve endurance than running a marathon. Increase workouts gradually. It can be daunting to think about greatly improving your endurance levels. But taking a gradual, incremental approach to improving endurance is both safe and effective. Also, when engaged, mentally divide the workout into smaller chunks of time. This way you have several smaller goals to accomplish, rather than one large goal. This can make it easier to digest a tough workout. Use friends to keep you motivated. Having friends
workout alongside you can keep you motivated. Workout buddies may offer the encouragement necessary to keep pushing through. Another motivating factor is bragging rights afterward.
Have a good emotional connection. A desire to have a
great body may not be enough to motivate you to work out and push harder. If not, think of a better reason to exercise, and it may be the mind over matter you need. Many people find inspiration from family health history risk factors or through the goal of reversing negative health reports from doctors' offices. These motivating factors will help you press on and push harder. azhealthandliving.com | January 2017

HOME
DECORATE & IMPROVE
By MS
Make the Year Ahead Clutter-Free Many people feel the dawn of a new year provides an opportunity to clean the slate and begin anew. That notion can be applied in various ways, including around the house. Cleaning the slate at home may involve reducing clutter around the house. Clutter can gradually overtake a home's interior, turning a once pristine home into one overwhelmed with nonessential items. Clearing a home of clutter can seem like a monumental task, but the following tips can help homeowners and apartment dwellers make the year ahead clutter-free.
Scan important documents and save them on a computer. Some documents cannot be discarded, but that does not mean they have to be stored in bulky file cabinets or desk drawers. Scan important documents such as medical receipts or tax returns and save them on your computer where they won't take up any physical space. Purchase an external hard drive as a safety net where you can store backups of important documents in case a computer crashes and cannot be rebooted.
Thin out DVD and CD libraries. Thanks to streaming services and digital music players, DVDs and compact discs have become somewhat obsolete. Discard or donate DVDs that you can just as easily stream through your television, and convert compact discs to digital files that you can play on your computer and MP3 players, ultimately donating the discs and clearing space.
Purchase furniture that doubles as storage. Storage ottomans and benches can help clear common areas and bedrooms of clutter such as blankets and bed linens that can make rooms feel more claustrophobic. Storage furniture might not get excess items out of the house, but such furnishings can create a more comfortable, welcoming environment.
Switch to e-statements for bank documents and utility bills. Paper is a big contributor to household clutter. That's still the case even though many adults now pay the majority of their bills online. When given the chance to choose between paper or e-statements, opt for the latter so bills and bank statements don't pile up on your desk or throughout your home office. If you still want to keep important bills and bank statements, download them to your computer and keep them in a designated folder on your desktop. 48 January 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
Opting for e-statements instead of paper statements can help men and women reduce clutter around the house. Adopt an "out with the old, in with the new" mantra. Resolve to donate old items after purchasing new ones or receiving birthday or holiday gifts. Hanging on to old items because they can still function and serve some utility is a recipe for a cluttered home. Anytime you or a family member brings a new item into your home, make sure the item it's replacing finds its way out the door. Clearing clutter is a goal for many people at the dawn of a new year. As intimidating as clutter can seem, discarding it is easier than it may appear.
WHY ADVERTISE WITH The Right Target Audience It is the most important factor, which makes a world of difference and will move your business from market penetration, to market domination.

How to Engineer Your Financial Future in 2017
Financial resolutions can be the most difficult to keep. They can include minute detail, number crunching, plenty of files and discipline that can affect a person’s entire lifestyle. Many folks simply are not predisposed to combing through the details of their financial situation; for them, the financial world is abstract and filled with arbitrary rules, constantly changing interest rates and other complexities, but being more involved in your own money is well worth the investment. While professional help is recommended for many aspects of a person’s financial affairs, it’s ultimately up to the individual to understand his or her own money. There are many things the average person can do to take control of their financial life.
For your cash flow, keep in mind the four A’s: Accounting, Analysis, Allocation and Adjustment. The four A’s describe a systematic and disciplined approach to your daily, weekly, monthly and yearly spending habits. Accounting involves gathering all your relevant financial information – income, recurring bills and other expenditures – creating a central list of each item, and pulling it together in a place where it’s easily accessible. Analysis is reviewing the information to determine whether you have a shortfall or surplus, and finding places to reduce expenses. Saving $100 a month on dining out, for instance, would allow you to apply $100 to your mortgage loan principle, saving you a substantial amount in interest payments. Allocation involves determining your financial commitments and priorities, needs versus wants and distributing your income accordingly. Adjustment involves periodic reviews of your financial information and shifting assets to meet changing needs.
that can meet your needs. Your employer funds some; you fund some. Bear in mind that, in most cases, early withdrawals before age 59½ may be subject to a 10 percent federal income tax penalty. The latest date to begin required minimum distributions is usually April 1 of the year after you turn age 70½. Withdrawals from tax-deferred plans are taxed as ordinary income. The top planning options include defined benefit pension; money purchase pension; profitsharing plan; savings plan; employee stock ownership plan; tax-sheltered annuities; individual retirement accounts; selfemployed plans; simplified employee pensions; and savings incentive match plans for employees.
Utilize estate-planning tools such as wills and trusts; make sure the details are accurate. Wills and trusts
Remember the first commandment in safe investment: diversification. Virtually every investment has some type
allow you to spell out how you would like your property to be distributed, and much more. A will gives you the opportunity to nominate your executor and guardians for your minor children. If you fail to make such designations through your will, the decisions will probably be left to the courts. Bear in mind that property distributed through your will is subject to probate, which can be a time-consuming and costly process. Trusts, which are more complex, let you customize the distribution of your estate with the added advantages of property management and probate avoidance. 50 January 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
Start planning your retirement sooner rather than later. There are a variety of retirement planning options
of risk associated with it. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Diversification is one of the main reasons why mutual funds may be so attractive for both experienced and novice investors. Many non-institutional investors have a limited investment budget and may find it challenging to construct a portfolio that is sufficiently diversified. For a modest initial investment, you can purchase shares in a diversified portfolio of securities. Depending on the objectives of the fund, it may contain a variety of stocks, bonds and cash vehicles, or a combination of them.
Deciding if a Career Change is For You
By MS
While losing weight and quitting smoking remain among the most popular New Year’s resolutions each year, many more people resolve to change careers at the dawn of a new year. Changing careers is a significant step, especially for men and women who are firmly established in their fields. A career change can be just as rewarding and life changing as losing weight or quitting smoking, and there are some things professionals might want to consider before resolving to change careers in the New Year.
Changing careers vs. switching jobs Changing careers and switching jobs are not the same thing, and some people may want the former while others may only be in need of the latter. A full-fledged career change may require returning to school and a willingness to start from the bottom. A job change typically allows professionals to stay in their fields and move on to another position, whether it's with their existing employer or with another company.
Career trajectory The direction of a person's career may also influence whether or not they want to make a career change. Established professionals mulling a career change should consider their willingness to start anew. Many mid-career professionals have worked for years to establish themselves in their fields and within their companies. Switching careers does not mean that experience and reputation is invaluable, but neither attribute may carry as much weight in a different line of work and that can affect career trajectory and future earnings.
Effects on others Established professionals must also consider the effect that a career change may have on their families. Married midcareer professionals should discuss changing careers with their spouse and even their children if the kids are old enough to understand. Discuss the pros and cons of changing careers and the impact that making such a change may have on your family's daily life. Will the family have to move? Will the family lifestyle change dramatically, if at all? Spouses and children may feel better about the change knowing they were involved in the decision, and talking things through with family
may help working professionals determine if changing careers is the best decision for them.
Long-term goals Long-term goals are another thing to consider before making a career change. That's especially true for mid or late-career professionals who may already have made significant progress toward achieving their long-term goals. Discuss long-term goals with your spouse or significant other and how changing careers might affect those goals. Long-term goals can change, and while the ability to realize those goals might not weigh heavily in your decision regarding a career change, understanding how such a change might affect your retirement or other late-life plans can only help you make the most informed decision possible. Many people resolve to change careers at the dawn of a new year. But such a decision requires the careful consideration of a host of factors. azhealthandliving.com |January 2017

Amy Adams
One of the entertainment industry’s most in-demand actresses With the New Year officially here, actress Amy Adams can now reflect on an amazing 2016. Last year she earned acclaim for her work in the science fiction movie “Arrival” and impressed audiences in thriller “Nocturnal Animals.” Added to that, she was once again Lois Lane in “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which many media outlets report is her highest grossing film to date. But, a successful year isn’t new to Adams – nor do many predict that she’ll slow down her work anytime soon. In 2014, Time magazine ranked her as one of the 100 most influential people and Forbes named her as one of the highest-paid actresses in the world in both 2014 and 2016. She’s a five-time Academy Award nominee and is also up for a Golden Globe nod this year for Best Actress with her work on “Arrival.” In a recent interview with The New York Times, writer Cara Buckley asked Adams if it’s stressful going through the awards nomination process over and over. Adams replied in an honest candor that she’s known for: “It’s easy to get caught up, not in the nominations — not in the reward-award aspect of it, but just in everything that it becomes. The red carpets and the over importance. It’s easy for that to sort of take center stage in that moment, especially when you’re a young woman. For me, it definitely at times is overwhelming, that whole process. But I’m always grateful because the nomination for ‘Junebug’ and campaigning launched what is my current career…” While she’s well acquainted with national awards, Adams is a hit on the regional film festival awards circuit as well. According to Variety, “The Palm Springs International Film Festival will present Amy Adams with the Chairman’s award for her performance 52 January 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
in ‘Arrival’ at its annual awards gala on Jan. 2 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.” “Throughout her career, Amy Adams has continuously challenged herself with complex roles,” Festival Chairman Harold Matzner told Variety. “This is reaffirmed in her most recent project, ‘Arrival,’ where she anchors the film with an award-winning performance as a prominent linguist, Dr. Louise Banks, as she attempts to communicate with creatures in one of a dozen spacecrafts that visit Earth. It is our honor to present the Chairman’s Award to Amy Adams.” In addition to her accolades, Adams is a wife to fellow actor Darren Le Gallo and the two have a six-year-old daughter. When chatting with The New York Times, Adams noted how she loves the fact that—while a famous actress—she still is able to lead a relatively normal personal life because she is not easily recognizable. “I love it, I get to be a mama. I get to navigate the world for the most part,” she told the publication. According to an interview with Allure magazine, fans won’t likely see Adams on social media any time soon. "I come from a different generation," she told the publication. "Social media wasn't prevalent when I started. You didn't want people in your house." Over the years, interview after interview, Adams has garnered a reputation for not being too wrapped up in the Hollywood limelight. “I don’t think of myself as a celebrity. It’s not a part of my pursuit…” she says in an interview with Vulture. This year, reports are confirming even more projects for the busy star, including two films and a return to TV in an HBO series where she will both act and coproduce. Recently, Adams reflected on her career and personal growth to People magazine. “I think when I was younger, I was so caught up and it felt like there was a lot of judgment — you just got caught up things that weren’t important,” she shared with the publication. “As you get older, you just realize how fortunate you are, and it’s a wonderful honor, and you just appreciate it in a different way.” azhealthandliving.com |January 2017

How to Survive Retirement in a Pensionless Society Most people nearing retirement have had to adapt to a changing world along the way. At one time, retirement rested on what financial professionals like to refer to as a three-legged stool – Social Security, savings and a pension. That stool went wobbly, though, when most private-sector pensions began to disappear. Years ago, the idea was that your employer and the government would take care of you. But those days are gone. Now the burden is on each individual to make sure they’re prepared for their own retirement. That’s why it’s important to have a game plan. Don’t despair, though. There are a few steps anyone can take to survive today’s pensionless retirement, including:
Map out a retirement strategy. Often, even people who are stashing away money for retirement don’t have a firm handle on what they’re trying to accomplish. This brings to mind the old saying: “If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you get there?” Having a strategy helps you know your ultimate goal and what you need to do to accomplish it. Once you develop a strategy, you also need to remember that conditions don’t always remain the same. Changes in your income and expenses, along with fluctuating market conditions, can all have an impact on your plan. You should review your plan about every three years and, if necessary, update your strategy.
Live within your means. It’s difficult to save a comfortable retirement nest egg when you’re spending more than you earn and racking up debt. Create a budget and stick to it.
Don’t ignore the cost of health care in retirement. Perhaps people just assume they will be healthy forever. Or maybe they just don’t think about this subject. Either way, too many of them don’t plan for or underestimate how much health care could end up costing them. It’s been estimated that a 65-year-old couple who retired in 2014 would need about $220,000 to cover health care in retirement. So you need to work it into the equation. 60 January 2017
| azhealthandliving.com
Remember to account for inflation. Just when you think you’ve saved enough – you haven’t saved enough. At least you didn’t if you failed to take inflation into account. The cost of living is going to go up. That means the value of the dollars you saved is going to go down. You need to factor that in when you plan for your financial future.
Prepare for the possibility of long-term care. This is another cost that many people don’t plan for, but the necessity of long-term care is a reality at some point for 70 percent of people over 65. The average annual cost of a private nursing home room is $77,000, so it’s unwise to overlook it. You need to start thinking about all this now, whether retirement is decades away or a few years away. The sooner you begin saving and planning, the greater the odds are that you’ll have a happy and secure retirement.

Aging & Driving Getting behind the wheel and enjoying the freedom to travel is a luxury few are anxious to abandon. But there comes a time in nearly every person's life when he or she must take inventory of his or her driving and assess if that next joy ride is a safe and smart decision. Driving may help older adults remain independent and mobile, but the chance for a motor vehicle accident increases as one ages. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says fatal crash rates per mile traveled increase starting at age 75 and increase notably after age 80. This is largely due to increased susceptibility to injury and medical complications among older drivers rather than an increased tendency to get into crashes. Road accidents tend to increase around a person's 65th birthday. Authorities in Canada require physicians to warn patients if the doctors have any concerns about their patients' ability to drive. Doctors also must report these concerns. There are no such requirements in the United States, where individual drivers and families must use their own judgement to decide if it is still safe for a particular person to be on the road. Minor fender benders, traffic citations, trouble remembering directions or frequently visited stores, may be early indications that a driver is no longer at his or her best behind the wheel. Some experts say that families should institute driving directives, much in the way a person would spell out medical desires or end-oflife plans. This way, when the time comes to assess driving ability, the conversation already has been started. There is no set age when a person's keys should be taken away, as aging does not guarantee drivers' abilities will decline. In fact, there are many things people can do to prolong their time on the road.
Get routine vision and hearing checks. These examinations will help to determine your fitness to be on the road and shed light on any issues that need to be addressed. Those who wear contact lenses or glasses may need to update their prescriptions. 62 January 2017
| azhealthandliving.com
Driving ability may decline as drivers age. But certain steps can keep seniors on the road longer. Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can affect the body in many ways, including reducing reaction time. Falling asleep while driving can compromise the safety of drivers, their passengers and fellow motorists. Know your medications. Certain medications can make you drowsy, so read the labels so you know not to drive while taking them. Speak with your doctor to see if there are any substitutes that won't affect your performance behind the wheel. Recognize your limitations. You may not like driving at night or in inclement weather. Stick to driving when you feel most comfortable. Enroll in a refresher course. Sign up for a defensive driving course to review your driving skills. Not only may it make you safer on the road, but it also may help reduce your insurance rates. Getting older doesn't mean you have to quit driving right away. Recognize the signs of a decline in driving ability and figure out how long it is safe to remain behind the wheel.
Assistive Devices Help People Remain Mobile
By MS
The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S. depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than 6 million use canes, walkers, or crutches to assist with mobility. The following are some of the common types of mobility devices available for purchase.
Change Your Thoughts. Change Your Words. Change Your World. Sponsored by
Canes: Are handheld devices that provide a little extra stability or support to weakened limbs. Canes are easily transported and can assist those who need only a little help.
Standard walkers: Also known as, medical walkers, standard walkers offer substantial support and must be lifted to move. That requires upper body strength, which can be difficult for some to maintain on long trips.
Rolling walkers: Are similar to standard walkers. But rolling walkers have wheels, either on the front only or on both sets of legs. They are somewhat less stable than standard walkers. Rolling walkers with wheel-locking devices may offer stability when needed. Some rolling walkers are called "rollators." Wheelchairs: Standard wheelchairs must be powered by
the person in the chair or by someone pushing it from behind. This can be difficult for people with minimal upper body strength. Mechanical wheelchairs are powered with a lever or button. Some people may opt for motorized scooters over bulkier wheelchairs when possible. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are heightadjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. azhealthandliving.com | January 2017
