"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.

"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp

SENIOR LIVING 60-63 Aging Well Visiting Loved Ones in Assisted Living Facilities; Six Proven Tricks for Remembering Someone’s Name; The Health Benefits of GrandparentGrandchild Relationships

Together We Can Make a Difference...

“Let integrity and uprightness preserve me; for I wait on thee.” ~Psalm 25:21 Welcome to our September issue. Why does it seem like integrity is tied to a dollar tag nowadays? How can society misconstrue what is morally sound with what is deliberately dishonest? A person with integrity knows what is important to God and consistently lives according to His word! Having integrity in all that we do is not about living out our moral values—it’s about acting out God’s values consistently! We are in need of integrity more than ever if we are to become the people who will leave a positive impact in this world. Here are a few Bible verses to encourage you to obey God’s word and to never sell or surrender your integrity. 1 Kings 9:4-5 And if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep my statutes and my judgments: Then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man upon the throne of Israel. Colossians 3:23-24 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. Luke 6:31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. Proverbs 2:20-21 That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous. For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it. Proverbs 11:3 The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them. Proverbs 20:7 The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him. Proverbs 12:22 Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight. Titus 1:8 But hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.

Mark 8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Proverbs 21:5 The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want. Luke 16:10 He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. Psalm 41:11-12 By this I know that thou favourest me, because mine enemy doth not triumph over me. And as for me, thou upholdest me in mine integrity, and settest me before thy face for ever. Ephesians 6:6 Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; Titus 2:7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, 2 Kings 22:7 Howbeit there was no reckoning made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand, because they dealt faithfully. Proverbs 28:6 Better is the poor that walketh in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich. Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Until next time,

Glacier Pool Coolers

PP

A Valley business keeps pools refreshing all year round Arizona-based Glacier Pool Coolers is a welcome solution all year round in Phoenix, which has an average of 110 days a year when the temperature skyrockets over 100 degrees. Glacier's recipe for success, for almost 15 years, might be defined in just one word: diversity. Developed and patented by owner Rick Argovitz, Glacier Pool Coolers work to cool pressurized water with airflow created by the unit’s fan. While the company is headquartered in Scottsdale, the business didn’t start out in the Valley of the Sun. “Growing up in Texas, sometimes it was just too hot to swim,” says Argovitz. “I thought that there had to be something better so I started researching. When I couldn’t find anything, I decided to create my own device.” The Texas swimming pool industry was not about embracing a new technology. Argovitz visited several trade shows. One in particular was the 2004 International Pool & Spa Show in New Orleans. There he met Buzz Ghiz, former owner of the Valley’s Paddock Pools. Ghiz loved Glacier’s products. On July 4, 2005, Argovitz moved his wife and two children to Scottsdale. “We knew that Arizona was where we needed to be for this business to continue to grow,” says Argovitz. The process for a Glacier Pool Cooler is simple. Chilled water is pumped back into the pool creating colder water over 12 to 14 hours. Temperatures can decrease by as much as 15 degrees, perfect for a hot Arizona day. The fan-based

system does not need Freon or gas and easily installs into existing pool plumbing systems and automated controls. It costs pennies a day to operate after it’s installed. Argovitz and his wife, Mindy, also a co-owner, have grown their business internationally, shipping pool coolers across the United States and abroad. The possibilities are endless on the commercial side, Argovitz says. Aquatic centers at a number of military bases and schools like Arizona State University, waterparks like Wild River Country in Little Rock, Arkansas and county parks and recreation centers in the City of Lakeland, Florida are all enjoying the benefits of the Glacier Pool Coolers. “Beyond personal use, we saw a real need in the commercial space to keep pools cool year-round,” says Argovitz. “Many of our biggest clients are resorts like the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa and Talking Stick Resort and Casino in Scottsdale.” Argovitz further saw a need for the cooling system beyond swimming pools so they broadened the scope of their company.

HEART OF THE COMMUNITY

SUPPORT LOCAL

By Jared McDonald

No Kid Hungry

Two Valley pizzerias join in the fight against childhood hunger Thirteen million kids across the U.S. struggle with hunger. That’s nearly one in six children who aren’t living up to their full potential because they lack the food they need to nourish their bodies and minds. One nonprofit is working to stomp out hunger by partnering with local businesses and organizations to generate the will and the skill to help communities feed children in need every day of the year. Since 2010, No Kid Hungry founders Billy and Debbie Shore have worked tirelessly to ensure kids in America have the healthy food they need, every day. Using proven, practical solutions, No Kid Hungry is ending childhood hunger today by ensuring that kids start the day with a nutritious breakfast, eat healthy summer meals and help families learn the skills they need to shop and cook on a budget. Last year, No Kid Hungry invested $31.52 million in community outreach, education programs and grants to other hunger-oriented nonprofit organizations. In Arizona, the organization works with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix to help feed children who rely on free or reduced-price school lunches but find themselves without consistent access to food during the summer. No Kid Hungry also relies on the generous support from local businesses. For several years, the nonprofit has partnered with many local restaurants, including two Valley pizzerias, to raise funds to feed hungry children in Arizona and across the country.

“Helping the communities in Arizona is an honor and we are so thankful to our local partners for supporting our mission,” says Eric Greenwald, co-chairman of the No Kid Hungry Board and president of Grimaldi’s Pizzeria. “Knowing that Grimaldi’s can make a difference means a lot. Grimaldi’s loves being able to participate in No Kid Hungry’s campaign year after year, and it’s incredible to see the restaurant community come together for a great cause.” Grimaldi’s Pizzeria, headquartered in Scottsdale, is raising money for No Kid Hungry during September. The restaurant will match donations made with the same amount in bonus cards. For example, if you donate $25 to No Kid Hungry at Grimaldi’s during the campaign, you will receive a $25 bonus card to any Arizona Grimaldi’s location. Locally owned Fired Pie is also participating in the No Kid Hungry campaign during September. When customers donate $1 to the nonprofit at any of Fired Pie’s 18 Arizona locations during September, they will receive a voucher for a free Pookie, a warm baked cookie with ice cream on top, which can be used at their next visit. “The mission for No Kid Hungry really is something that all of us at Fired Pie are supportive and passionate about and we like to give back,” says co-owner Fred Morgan. “We’re excited to participate since previous years were such

a success. It’s really a perfect fit. We have a lot of locations around the Valley so we think people will have no problem finding a Fired Pie that they can donate at.” “Fired Pie, Grimaldi’s Pizzeria and their guests have rallied behind our mission and have raised awareness and funds to end childhood hunger in America. We could not be more thankful for their generous support,” says Diana Hovey, Senior Vice President of Dine Out for No Kid Hungry.

“With one in six children in this country facing hunger, it is vital for us to continue to work together with great partners like Grimaldi’s and Fired Pie to ensure that every child gets the healthy food they need to succeed in life.” For more information on No Kid Hungry, visit www.nokidhungry.org. ” – Cindy E. “I’ve been competing in strength athletics since the age of 15 and have been competing at a professional level for the last 5 years. It wasn’t until 2014 that I needed to seek treatment for a patella tendon tear that I received while competing at the Commerce World’s Strongest Man in China. I had only heard about PRP treatments and the great benefits that it could have on one’s injuries - that’s when I found Dr. Lundquist at Active Life Physical Medicine & Pain Center in Avondale, Arizona. To this day, I have received Orthovisc injections to both knees along with PRP. I have also received PRP treatments for muscle tears and other tendon tears that I’ve obtained while competing at World’s Strongest Man. I feel that without Dr. Lundquist knowledge in sports medicine and PRP that I would have had to have surgery. The PRP treatments have played a huge role in keeping me at an elite level. Pioneer Title Agency Restores Local School Garden Through Outreach Program

Pioneer Title Agency – Arizona’s largest title agency that has been family owned and operated since 1985 – empowered each of its branches to get involved with the local schools in their community through a new project called “Old School.” Through it, each branch is empowered to help local schools with fundraising and other projects. As one of youngest branches in the state, the Sonoran Village office in North Phoenix wanted to make their mark in a big way. Recently, the entire branch transferred plants that they have been growing within their office all summer to the Stepping Stones Academy’s school garden. They also painted flowerbeds and performed general maintenance and upkeep to the garden space, ensuring that it will be ready for the school’s fifth grade class, who will be taking care of the plants this semester.

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST), invented and patented by John Chao, DDS, MADG, is a scalpel-free, suture-free procedure for correcting gum recession. During the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™, a needle is used to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Through this pinhole, special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue. These tools help expand and slide the gumline to cover the exposed root structure. There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue. Dr. Chang and Dr. Svans were two of the first dentists in Arizona and the United States trained and certified as Pinhole Surgical Technique™ Providers. Pituitary Tumors More Common Than You Might Think Though few pituitary tumors are cancerous, the number of pituitary tumors diagnosed each year may be far lower than their actual number. According to the American Cancer Society, roughly, 7,000 pituitary tumors are diagnosed each year, and nearly all of those are benign, or noncancerous. However, doctors have discovered that pituitary tumors are more common than once thought. Doctors who examined the brains of people who had died or people who have had imaging tests like an MRI found that as many as one in four people have a pituitary tumor without even knowing it. These tumors can occur in anyone, even children, and many rarely cause symptoms or health problems. However, pituitary tumors' apparent prevalence makes it important that adults understand pituitary tumors so they're better equipped should they receive a pituitary tumor diagnosis.

What is a pituitary tumor? Nearly all pituitary tumors are pituitary adenomas, or benign tumors that do not spread outside the skull. Adenomas are typically confined to the tiny space where the pituitary gland sits, though they can grow into the surrounding blood vessels, nerves and coverings of the brain. The fourth most common intracranial tumor, pituitary adenomas are the most common disease affecting the pituitary gland, and most often affect people in their 30s or 40s, though they have been found in children as well. A pituitary tumor that is malignant is known as a pituitary carcinoma, and, though it's possible, it likely will not spread to other parts of the body. Perhaps because pituitary carcinomas are so rare, it can be difficult for doctors to distinguish them from an adenoma unless the tumor starts to spread to another part of the body. Some additional types of tumors do not develop from cells of the pituitary gland, but they can grow into it and cause damage. Such tumors are very rare, however.

Are there symptoms of pituitary tumors? There are symptoms of pituitary tumors, most of which result from dysfunction in the glands that secrete hormones. Such dysfunction can cause overproduction of growth hormones, leading to a condition such as gigantism, or underproduction of growth hormones, which can lead to 30

e

e ber 2017

hypothyroidism, which causes retardation of growth and mental development. The most common side effect of a pituitary tumor is compression of the optic nerves, which transmits impulses from the retina to the brain. If compression of the optic nerve occurs, a person will gradually lose his or her vision, a loss that will first be noticed with the deterioration of lateral peripheral vision.

How is a pituitary tumor diagnosed? Doctors who suspect a pituitary tumor will give patients a physical and test their vision to see if patients have lost their peripheral vision. Hormone testing of the blood and urine and imaging tests, such as an MRI, are used to confirm a diagnosis.

Can a pituitary tumor be treated? As with most health issues, the earlier a pituitary tumor is detected the better a patient's chance at being cured. In addition, early intervention increases the chances a doctor can control the tumor and its side effects. Doctors treating a pituitary tumor can do so in three ways: surgical removal of the tumor, radiation therapy to kill tumor cells, or medication therapy to shrink or eradicate the tumor.

When Moles Are Worrisome

By MS

Brown spots, growths, and moles on the body are often harmless, but they may be indicative of skin cancer. Experts say that anyone who has more than 100 moles is at greater risk for melanoma than others. Knowing one's skin and being aware of any changes is key to detecting skin cancer much more promptly. Understanding the ABCDE's of detecting melanoma and the "Ugly Duckling" sign are important strategies for detecting skin cancer. Here's what a person should know.

Ugly Duckling sign This concept was introduced in 1998 and relates to the observation that nevi, or moles, on the body tend to look like one another - much like all the ducklings in a flock will resemble one another. However, a mole that is unlike the other, or an "ugly duckling," may indicate the presence of melanoma. Nevi may present in different patterns, which are deemed "normal" to a particular person. An outlier, or a mole that doesn't fit the pattern, could raise a red flag. The outlier may be darker than surrounding moles or it may be smaller.

ABCDE The Ugly Duckling sign is often used with another diagnostic tool called ABCDE. This is an acronym for the detection steps: Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter and Evolving.

Asymmetry: If an imaginary line is drawn through the

middle of the mole and the two halves of the mole do not match up, this could be a warning sign. Normal spots tend to be symmetrical.

Border: The borders of early melanoma tend to be jagged or notched, while regular moles have even borders.

Color: A mole with multiple colors might be melanoma. Diameter: Melanomas tend to be larger than the diameter of a pencil eraser. Large spots should be investigated. Evolving: If a mole starts to change all of a sudden by growing or changing color, or even if it simply feels different, see a doctor.

Financial Infidelity: The Most Common Type of Cheating

Cheating isn’t always about sex. According to a 2016 Harris Poll, almost half of Americans (42 percent) say they’ve committed some form of financial infidelity. Financial infidelity is when your spouse lies to you about how money is being spent, or hides secret accounts from you, or makes significant spending decisions without your knowledge. Financial infidelity is much more common than sexual cheating, and oftentimes equally as damaging to a relationship. Root Causes of Financial Infidelity: How does it all begin? Here are a few primary root causes:

Lack of communication When your spouse starts seeming more like a roommate whom you don’t share much in common with, it’s easy for an individual to resort back to making his or her own decisions – especially when it comes to spending.

Addiction Addiction isn’t limited to drugs and alcohol. There are all kinds of behaviors that people get high on; like gambling, shopping, sex, social media, plastic surgery or risky behavior. For any addict, the pleasure of the addiction can be worth any cost. And your spouse hiding a secret addiction can really dig a deep hole in the pocket you both share.

Seeking independence Not everyone can easily accept working together as a team, especially if the person in question feels that his or her voice is being drowned out. Sometimes, financial infidelity can be caused by one spouse maintaining an unreasonable level of independence and refusing to share decisions with a partner. Maintaining separate accounts can potentially exacerbate this issue. 32 September 2017| azhealthandliving.com

The warning signs that your spouse may be financially cheating Whatever money-spending habits are going on behind your back could be peering out from the dark in the form of these red flags: · He or she refuses to talk about finances, and often tries to quickly change the topic. · He or she wants control of your finances and to keep financial account passwords a secret. · You discover a new credit card or line of credit in your spouse’s name. · You spot suspicious withdrawals

Steps to confront your spouse about financial infidelity Don’t accuse

Accusations typically get people defensive, which is the worst way to start what is supposed to be a productive conversation. Another reason not to accuse is that you might be wrong.

Suggest a regular budget-meeting date night Honesty and communication are the cornerstones of a healthy marriage. To keep those blocks of foundation strong, two spouses must regularly check in with each other. When it comes to finances, it helps to set a regular date night routine in which you discuss simply where you both stand on financial matters, what your goals are together, and how you’ll both contribute to reach those goals. Have a drink and make “budget night” more fun.

Ensure financial transparency If you expect financial honesty from your spouse, ensure that you must also be completely honest – always. Create a Financial Agreement to Avoid Future Problems. Money is one of the most arguable topics in marriage. Your spouse’s financial infidelity does not necessarily mean the marriage is over. It might just mean your marriage needs more work (as all marriages do). A financial agreement can be a great solution to setting expectations that can function as a kind of mediator should any discrepancies arise.

Forgive or seek help You and your spouse are both human and surely, both of you have made mistakes. Depending on your situation, forgiving your spouse for his or her financial infidelity could be the sweet icing on the cake you baked together. However, some situations cross a line that may make this impossible with outside help. Seek marriage counseling if this is the case. When your spouse breaks the promises of marriage by cheating on you financially, it can be a hard blow to your marriage. However, it is possible to overcome your spouse’s financial infidelity and move forward – perhaps, hopefully, even richer in trust than before. azhealthandliving.com |

Q. What is a cochlear implant and is it right for my hearing loss?

Q. What is new in treating balance Q. What is the cause of varicose and and preventing falls? spider veins? How can they be treated?

A. A cochlear implant (CI) is an electronic

. Vertigo, dizziness and balance problems often lead to falls and injuries. These types of problems can seriously reduce the quality of life in many patients. Balance disorders and their treatment have traditionally involved exercises, called vestibular rehab, to retrain the inner ear. Too often these exercises prove to be inadequate leaving the patient unsteady and at risk of falling.

medical device that replaces the function of a damaged inner ear. CIs are different from hearing aids in that they bypass the damaged hair cells of the inner ear (cochlea), providing a signal to the brain, rather than just making sounds louder.

Since cochlear implants are typically covered by Medicare, many people believe they can avoid paying for hearing aids by getting a CI. Unfortunately, it is not as simple as that. Candidacy for CIs involve multiple appointments with several specialists, including an otologist and audiologist. Multiple evaluations are completed to determine candidacy. People who are CI candidates typically have no usable hearing or do poorly with powerful amplification. For those who get the cochlear implant, the results are oftentimes much better than with hearing aids. Initially, it sounds different from a hearing aid in that speech is reported to sound more robotic. It is a new way of hearing. The brain has to relearn how to process the sounds and make them meaningful. Successful use of the CI requires practice through various listening activities, a good support system, and realistic expectations with the motivation to succeed. Most people with a cochlear implant will say they wished they had gotten it sooner because it has made such a positive impact on their quality of life and relationships. If you have questions about cochlear implants or think you might be a candidate, see an audiologist.

One reason why inner ear exercises often fail to adequately relieve dizziness and poor balance is that, to maintain balance, the inner ear is not the only important consideration. You see the brain actually has to integrate information from the inner ear with information from other sensations of the body including vision, information coming from the feet, and information from a part of the brain called the cerebellum. So by rehabilitating only the information from the inner ear, the likelihood that a patient will obtain adequate relief of dizziness or vertigo is slight. Comprehensive programs to improve balance and walking must include rehabilitation of the information coming from the feet, the eyes and portions of the brain itself. We call these different "channels of balance" and to rehabilitate one without considering the others is often inadequate. In addition to specific exercises for the inner ear, exercises that help restore sensation from the feet, vision exercises or more accurately eyemovement exercises, and specific cerebellar training offer the best hope for restoring balance and steadiness in patients suffering from vertigo and other balance disorders. Comprehensive balance assessment and therapy is the best option.

Varicose veins are incompetent veins that appear under the skin and are usually blue in color. They can become enlarged due to pooling of blood. This occurs when the valves in the veins fail to keep the blood flowing in one direction that is towards the heart. This condition causes pain and swelling, night cramps, change in skin color and severe cases ulcers. Spider veins are small blue and red vessels visible within the skin, usually on legs but sometimes on face and chest. The latest technology available for vein treatment at our center is called Endovenous Laser Ablation Therapy (EVLT). A laser is used in a forty-five minute procedure to close the incompetent vein. Q. Why do I need a colonoscopy? A. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the U.S. amongst men and women, and the second leading cause of cancer related death overall. One in 20 Americans will suffer colorectal cancer that is about 5 percent of the National population. In this week, alone 19 people will lose their fight with colon cancer in Arizona. It is estimated that over 50 thousand deaths will occur from colorectal cancer this year. That is a staggering amount when you consider how highly treatable and curable the disease is in its early stages. Risks include anyone over the age of 40 at which point the risk of the disease doubles every 10 years. Ninety percent of all colorectal cancers will occur over the age of 50. Men are twice more likely to get the disease over women. People with firstdegree relatives (parents/sibling/offspring) who have colon cancer have 2-3 time increased risk of developing the disease. Symptoms can include rectal bleeding or a change in bowel habits such as diarrhea or constipation. Unfortunately, many polyps and cancers will fail to produce any symptoms at all. Early detection is key for most colorectal cancers start as polyps. These small polyps are detectable via colonoscopy and highly treatable at this stage for they allow for removal before transforming into cancer. There are over a million colorectal cancer survivors in the U.S. If everyone 50 years or older had a colonoscopy screening, as many as 80 percent of cancer deaths could be prevented.

Q. How can I tell if my dog is tolerating our exercise routine?

Q. What is obstructive sleep apnea?

A. It may be a bit cooler, but desert heat is

characterized by complete airway obstruction. It often is found, but not limited to, older, overweight men, but also affects significant percentages of women and children as well. If someone in your family has OSA, you will be more likely also to have it.

still dangerous for people and pets. Avoid long exposure to the sun; use sun protection to avoid sunburn; use dog boots to prevent burns from hot pavement; and drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration and heat stroke. Never leave a dog in the car for even a few minutes. Dogs do not sweat; they expel heat through panting, which requires a well-functioning airway. Dogs with short airways (bulldogs, pugs, etc.) have difficulty expelling heat and an increased risk of heat stroke. Dogs with a history of cardiovascular or respiratory disease are also at higher risk. Be extremely careful with these dogs. Let them out only during cooler portions of the day, and only for a short time (no long walks). If your dog has a history of coughing, changes in bark, or hoarse breathing, consult your veterinarian before starting any strenuous activity. Seek veterinary care immediately if your dog shows any sign of overheating: panting without being able to stop, failure to keep pace, collapse, red gums, vomiting, or diarrhea. Time is critical; getting to an emergency facility can save your dog’s life. Pour cool water over the dog (do not use ice!) or put rubbing alcohol on the footpads, but these do not reduce the need for immediate veterinary care.

– Dr. Carter Midwestern University Companion Animal Clinic 623.537.6000

A. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is

The serious and life-threatening problems start when sleepers begin experiencing apneas, where breathing stops and hypopneas, where breathing is shallow due to an obstruction. Breathing is usually blocked in the back of the throat because: • The tongue and muscles relax during sleep. • The lower jaw falls back toward the throat. • The airway becomes blocked. A typical sequence of OSA occurs when a person stops snoring and is silent for seconds, or minutes. The body’s oxygen level drops and the blood pressure rises. This causes the sleeper to wake briefly and begin breathing. Once asleep again, the muscles relax and the airway becomes blocked, cutting off the airway again. This cycle can occur hundreds of times per night. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common form of sleep apnea. It ranges in severity from mild to moderate, to severe. Other forms of sleep apnea include central and mixed sleep apnea.

Compared to most forms of liposuction, Tickle Lipo has less bruising, less swelling, less pain, better skin tightening, and can be used on most areas of the body. It’s often an obvious choice for any man or woman wanting to slim down problem areas.

Q. What is virtual colonoscopy? A. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. However, it is one of the most curable and treatable forms of cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends that men and women who are at average risk for developing colorectal cancer should get a colonoscopy every 10 years starting at the age of 50. Unfortunately, it is estimated that onethird of Americans who should be screened choose not to due to the exam being invasive and unpleasant. It’s important for the people to know there are alternative, effective options available. Virtual colonoscopy, also known as CT colonography, is a safe, non-invasive procedure to identify growths (polyps) in the colon. Polyps have been shown to be the precursor of many cancers in the colon and rectum. This minimally invasive test provides both 2-D and 3-D images that can clearly depict many polyps and other lesions that are seen on a conventional exam. Ninety percent of those who are screened do not have polyps and can be spared having to undergo a full colonoscopy. A virtual colonoscopy is completed in approximately 20 minutes and does not require sedation. After being positioned on a CT table, a very small, flexible tube will be inserted two inches into the rectum to allow air to be gently pumped into the colon. After inflation, a CT scanner is used to acquire images that will be interpreted by a radiologist. Once the scan is complete, patients can return to regular activities.

Q. Is it possible to regulate pain through ear stimulation?

Q. How do I have a restful and refreshing vacation?

Q. My skin is patchy, red and spotty… what can I do?

A. The short answer is “yes.” There are different stimulation points in the ear that correlate to nerves such as the vagus nerve. These areas can be stimulated via gentle pulsations to help decrease pain, improvement of peripheral artery disease, and assisting in discontinuing narcotic drug therapies.

A. Traveling by air today is stressful. Have

A. Sun damage can appear in many forms and even the most diligent sunscreen wearers can have sun damage. The most common type of damage presents as brown spots, known as hyperpigmentation, but is often referred to as age or sunspots. This damage can be very evident on the face, chest, arms, hands and legs. Other sun damage materializes as broken capillaries, patchy redness on the sides of the neck, or that permanent triangle of redness on the chest.

Once such treatment, Stivax, is done but placing small electrodes in the area of the vagus nerve. It is connected to a programmable battery. This is worn for 14 days and then taken off for 7 days. This is done for 3 cycles. At the end of the treatment the nerves will be “reeducated.” In the author’s opinion helping the part of the nervous system responsible for relaxation does this. This allows for improved sleep and circulation. Randomized, controlled studies indicate that the majority of chronic pain patients described at least a 50% reduction in pain and further accumulation of pain reduction in subsequent treatments. Some patients, having solely relied upon narcotic drug therapies, have been able to discontinue the use of these conventional medicines. A clinical trial by senior consultant Dr. Thomas Payrits on Vagus stimulation in peripheral arterial disease patients supports the effectiveness of STIVAX neurostimulation therapy. In addition to good data quality and a high level of patient compliance, study results show a significant rise in the transcutaneous partial pressure of oxygen between the initial examination and the final one.

an emergency healthy snack with you and keep hydrated, your favorite music on your cell phone is nice or a relaxed flight or road trip. There are several things that you can do even if the hotel you booked or the relatives you are visiting offer you a not so wonderful hide- a- bed. Plan ahead for a trip; don’t try and do laundry, pack and go to bed late the night before. Wear comfortable travel clothes that are easy care and non-wrinkling. If you are at one place for several days, unpack and hang clothes. When you book your room, ask for a quiet one, not near the elevator or ice machine. Upon arrival at the room, set the temperature to what you are used to at home. A cool, dark room preferably in the upper 60’s is best. Hang out your do not disturb sign and make sure the blackout blinds are in place. Maintain the same sleep schedule as much as possible, don’t eat too late, avoid spicy foods and caffeine, get exercise and fresh air, turn off TV and other devices except soothing music, bring your favorite scent, take a relaxing bath and pray.

Many insurance plans will cover this treatment and it can be an effective method of pain control.

I just returned from a vacation in Alaska and was amazed how much the sleep wristband on my right arm helped me get a good night’s refreshing sleep even with the sun shining most of the night and the unfamiliar beds and sounds.

Each type of sun damage can be treated, leaving you with clearer, brighter and more evenly toned skin. Photo facials are a great no downtime treatment which can effectively deal with brown spots quickly and efficiently. More severe browns, with a combination of redness, are best addressed with Iconic Skin Rejuvenation, which can address brown spots, redness, broken capillaries and stimulate collagen. The excel V Yag laser can address minimal to significant redness with its multi-functionality, including the popular pain free Laser Genesis. If the pigment is brown and patchy, it may be melisma, and that is best treated with chemical peels and topical prescription products, because lasers and light based devices can make it worse. With all protocols, it is necessary to use medical grade products, such as lighteners and sunscreen. A yearly maintenance protocol is also recommended for continued years of youthful looking skin. Remember, a spotted, ruddy, red/brown skin tone is always more aging than a few wrinkles, so make this the fall you address clearer, brighter, more vibrant skin.

Q. Are you drinking alkaline water? A. Most homeowners install a salt based

water softener to treat their water. These systems add a large amount of sodium to the water by a process called ion exchange. To avoid drinking the sodium they install a reverse osmosis under sink drinking system to remove the sodium. The problem is the reverse osmosis systems remove all the beneficial minerals leaving the water acidic. This is unhealthy, not to mention extremely expensive considering the four gallons wasted per one gallon of pure water filtered. And how bout costly filter changes averaging $175 per year? There is a better way to treat your water. One example is the PhSmarte 1000 Whole House Hard Water Treatment System. The technology in the PhSmarte 1000 leaves in the beneficial minerals our body needs for a healthy alkaline lifestyle. Alkaline water helps to reduce stomach acid, kill free radicals, raise body pH and proves to be a great antioxidant. The PhSmarte 1000 removes chlorine, chemicals, heavy metals and Volatile organic compounds (VOCs). And you enjoy bottled quality alkaline water in every faucet in your home. The PhSmarte 1000 has an exclusive electronic cathode anode technology descaler which changes sticky calcium to a non-sticky healthy calcium carbonate and eliminates any chance of scale buildup in faucets, appliances and plumbing in your house.

It uses no Salt or potassium, has no maintenance and there are no filters to change. The best part is the healthy alkaline benefits you will experience and zero dollars for maintenance during the 15 year warranty saving you more than $10,000 in maintenance costs compared to the salt based systems.

A. It is important to be sure someone who

exhibits signs of depression does not have a physical reason. If a person has chronic pain or discomfort, they may have a chronic case of the blues as well. Addressing these concerns is a good place to start. Reviewing current medications is also a good idea as depression is a side effect of some medications. Proper nutrition is also key to a positive outlook. Eating well promotes feelings of well-being and ensures optimal health. Consider a home delivery program if preparing nutritious, healthy meals at home is an issue. An in-home caregiver can also help with shopping, preparing meals at home and provide transportation for outings. Encourage the pursuit of hobbies. Whether revisiting an old favorite pastime or discovering something new, finding enjoyable ways to pass the time will help prevent the depression that can come from boredom and isolation. There are numerous clubs and activities available at local senior centers and churches. It is also a great way to connect with others and form new friendships.

Finally, it may be beneficial to seek some form of counseling, which may be helpful in keeping depression at bay. Sun Cities CareGivers offers companion services for seniors who need a little support at home. Sometimes it helps just knowing someone will be there when needed.

change. Here are just a few examples of what those changes might be: •Lifestyle •Health •Physicians •Benefits •Cost of care

Even subtle changes to any of the above can greatly affect the performance of your health plan. Residing in Arizona provides many health plan options to those enrolled in Medicare. The majority of Medicare beneficiaries have chosen medical coverage in addition to “traditional” Medicare. One of those options is a Medicare Advantage plan and, although they all offer very comprehensive protection, they can also vary greatly from plan to plan and year to year. If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan you’ll receive an “Annual Notice of Change” (ANOC) by early October each year explaining any and/or all changes made to your benefits for the coming year. The Open Enrollment Period allows those with Medicare the opportunity to explore and learn about all options available to them for the coming year. Unlike other times throughout the year, this 7-week period of October 15 to December 7 allows changes without restrictions. It’s important to learn and understand the differences and options available.

E PRESENT

PARENTING By Dr. Domenick Maglio, author of In-Charge Parenting: In a P.C. Nation

The Eight Steps to Loving Your Child Through Purposeful Discipline An undisciplined child typically develops destructive behavioral patterns that hurt him or her as well as others. On the other hand, a disciplined child will learn constructive methods that will assist him in his interacting with the world. But the most important part of discipline is that it must be purposeful.

What is Purposeful Discipline? Purposeful Discipline is a demonstration of one person’s love for another. When parents are intentionally disciplining their child to alter a destructive behavior, the parents are actually expressing love toward their child. The reason for Purposeful Discipline is for the parent to provide the child with teaching or training that will assist in developing moral values and behaviors. These values and behaviors have worked and passed the test of time and have been proven to be effective in developing a healthy individual.

The Four Requirements of a Parent Who Wants to Use Purposeful Discipline 1. Parents should be responsible and emotionally mature. 2. Parents should be able to meet their children’s concrete physical needs. 3. Parents should ready to actively teach through Purposeful Discipline. 4. Parents should be willing to be firm and consistent their discipline

Eight Steps of Purposeful Discipline Be in charge. Your child is your solemn responsibility to raise. The child is not your friend or your equal. To become a friend or equal to the child, the parent has to consciously distort reality. Parents who play the phony game of “I’m your equal” lose their authority as parents. .

September 2017 |

Role model moral values. Adults who are ready to be parents possess awareness and emotional maturity as well as know the behavior and thought patterns their children need to have to be morally productive people in their future. For parents to begin the process of instilling values in the mind of the child, the parents need to believe in these values, to agree with each other these values are positive for the development of the child, and most importantly, role model these values and behaviors.

Communicate the positives of moral values. After parents reach an agreement with each other on the values and expectations they desire in their child, the parents create parameters. A parameter is the defining of the expected general value to be internalized by the child. This is demonstrated by examples that give the pictures they want their children to internalize. The more creative energy the parents use in various situations to communicate these parameters, the clearer and more focused the child’s picture is in his head of what the parents expect from him. Set limits and expectations. Parents set limits and expectations when they state the rules of what the child can and cannot do. As the parents observe the child’s behavior, the parent may see that the child often wanders outside of the

established parameters. The parent sees the discrepancy between the parameter (desired value) and the child’s inappropriate behavior. To move the child back inside the lines of the parameter, the parents announce to the child the rules of what the child can and cannot do.

Prepare child with anticipated consequences. Once the parameters and corresponding limits are set, situational preparation logically follows. The particular situation that is going to occur, such as visiting relatives, going to church and taking a day trip, requires that the parents prepare the children as to their specific expectations. Parents need to give the child the anticipation of a reward or punishing consequences for or inappropriate behavior. By spelling out the parent’s expectations to the child, the parents are setting up a forced choice that increases the probability of the child displaying the socially approved behavior.

Debrief after the event. After the specific event, the parents debrief the children on how things went according to their perception. The children were forewarned by the prepping and should be evaluated immediately following the situational event.

Administer consequences. Parents need to observe the child and give rewarding or punishing consequences depending on the behavior exhibited. Consequences are responses to behavior that increase or decrease the probability of a person adhering to a specific behavior. Using consequences shows the determination of an adult to enforce the limits and maintain the integrity as parental authority figures. Discuss purpose of the discipline. Finally, the parents will ask the children or tell them the reason for the discipline in order to increase the understanding and decrease resentment. Depending upon the age of the child, the parent explains how his choices affect the family, friends, and his own development as a person. The younger the child, the simpler is the explanation. The older the child, the more complex is the explanation of the reason for the specific consequence. Providing the child with values such as love, obedience, respectfulness, empathy, honesty, independence, willpower, conscience, critical thinking, pain control, social skills, and safety awareness is an expression of love. Parents who consciously pass on their wisdom through Purposeful Discipline will eventually create a child who is internalizing the process of becoming self-disciplined. The emergence of a young individual’s self-discipline is a sure sign of parental love for the child. azhealthandliving.com |

Pack Well for a Hike in the Wilderness September may enjoy the title of National Wilderness Month, but any time of year is a good time to enjoy the great outdoors. One of the ways to immerse oneself in nature is to enjoy a day hike or overnight backpacking excursion. Millions of people take to trails or create their own paths all across the world each year. Hiking is a great way to enjoy the beauty of nature, but it also has other benefits. The American Hiking Society notes that research has consistently shown that hiking as regular exercise can improve overall health and fitness. It also may lengthen and improve quality of life. Hiking as a form of low-impact walking can reduce risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and anxiety. Preparing for a hike involves packing accordingly for the trip. These items should be brought along on hiking trips to ensure such excursions are comfortable, safe and successful.

Strategies to Keep Weight Off By MS

Losing weight requires hard work and determination. Oftentimes, men and women hoping to lose weight must commit to healthier lifestyles than the ones they've grown accustomed to. That can be a big adjustment, and it's important that men and women about to embark on their weight loss journeys recognize that keeping lost weight off can sometimes be as challenging as losing the weight. Maintaining weight loss can be an uphill battle, but men and women can employ various strategies to ensure the weight they lose stays lost for years to come.

Continue your weigh-ins. Weigh-ins may seem like the enemy as men and women make their initial efforts toward losing weight. However, weigh-ins gradually become something to look forward to as pounds start to drop off. Routinely weigh yourself even after reaching your weight loss goals, as the scale can be just as motivational for people trying to maintain healthy weights as it is for people trying to lose weight. Stick to your diet. When trying to lose weight, adults often

combine diet and exercise. That's a great weight loss strategy, and it's also a great way to maintain a healthy weight. Recognize that weight won't stay off if you exercise but don't eat right. Rather, maintaining a healthy weight over the long haul requires both a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Eat slowly. While it might not work for everyone, eating

slowly has been linked to lower calorie consumption. A study from researchers at Texas Christian University found that participants who were instructed to take small bites, chew thoroughly and pause and put their spoons down between bites consumed, on average, 88 fewer calories per meal than participants who were told to take large bites, chew quickly and continue eating without putting their spoons down. Study participants who were overweight, however, ate just 58 fewer calories on average.

Document your efforts. Whether it's in a journal, on a blog or by emailing a loved one, documenting your efforts to maintain a healthy weight may provide the motivation you need to stay on course. azhealthandliving.com | September 2017

REJUVENATE

By MS

What Causes Sensitive Skin? "Sensitive skin" can describe a host of symptoms that affect the skin on people's' faces and bodies. Some may develop sensitive skin after using skin care products that contribute to irritation or make their skin feel uncomfortable, even if there is no outward appearance of change. According to Francesca Fusco, M.D., an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, more than 50 percent of women categorize themselves as having sensitive skin. Although there are many treatments designed to treat sensitive skin, what drives irritation in one person may not produce the same effects in another. Therefore, alleviating sensitivity is not always an easy fix. Getting to the root of the irritation can help people develop a more customized plan for relief.

Indoor and outdoor environment Changes in the weather as well as the air inside of a home can cause reactions in the skin. For example, cool, dry air and central heating can cause the skin to become dehydrated. Dirt and pollution also may play a role. Pollution in the air can be absorbed by the skin's natural barrier, eventually weakening it, say the sensitive skin experts at Simple skin care products.

Age Skin can lose its elasticity and ability to recover quickly with age, making it prone to greater sensitivity. Couple that with the public's quest for younger-looking skin that involves cleansing religiously, exfoliating too frequently, and relying on a bevy of anti-aging lotions, and it's understandable why skin may become less resilient over time.

Dry skin Lack of moisture can contribute to sensitive skin. A cleanser that is too drying is often the culprit behind unnecessary irritation. According to skin care expert RenĂŠe Rouleau, harsh detergents in commonly used facial cleansers can break down the natural lipids in skin. Furthermore, invisible cracks may form, enabling moisture to seep out and irritants to get in. 48 September 2017 | azhealthandliving.com

Skin disorders Common skin disorders or allergic skin reactions may make skin more sensitive. Such conditions include rosacea, eczema, psoriasis or allergic contact dermatitis. Injured skin may be more reactive to the environment and certain products as well. Allergies to food or environmental components may also make skin more sensitive. Patch testing can identify allergies. Some trial and error may be necessary to find a skin care regimen that works on sensitive skin. Test new products in an inconspicuous spot prior to use, choosing items that have as few ingredients as possible. Avoid items with alcohol, retinoids and fragrances. Antibacterial or deodorant ingredients also may cause problems, so choose moisturizing products and soap-free cleansers.

Zoe Saldana True star power

Known for big roles in some of today’s most popular sci-fi films, Zoe Saldana has become a shining star in the entertainment industry.

While she’s been in Hollywood for decades, many agree that Saldana’s big breakthroughs occurred with her roles in “Star Trek” and “Avatar” in 2009. According to multiple sources, “Avatar” is one of the highest grossing films of all times. Since 2014, Saldana has played Gamora in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise. She’s also known for roles in films like “Live by Night,” “Star Trek Beyond,” “Colombiana,” “Out of the Furnace,” and many more. A busy mom of three boys—one born just this year—Saldana is using her star power to produce films and start a new media company as well. According to an exclusive story by the Hollywood Reporter, Saldana is launching BeSe, which will “create content targeting millennial and Gen Z audiences for distribution across social and digital platforms.” The digital media company will launch by the end of this year and focus specifically on empowering a Latino audience, according to the Hollywood Reporter. "Latinos are a growing community in America, but Latino stories have remained historically marginalized," Saldana told the Hollywood Reporter. "I'm so excited to be leading BeSe, a truly uplifting brand that fills a niche for young audiences craving positive portrayals of the modern Latino experience in America. I'm grateful to partner with Daniel, Monica and Plus Foundry so that more voices can be heard and empower others to actively create their own futures." 50 September 2017 | azhealthandliving.com

In addition to launching BeSe, Saldana works with her sisters Cisely and Mariel. “Through their production company, Cinestar, the sisters Saldana have produced the NBC miniseries ‘Rosemary's Baby’ and the digital series ‘My Hero’ for AOL,” according to Shape Magazine. “… More recently, the trio teamed up with Awestruck, Awesomeness TV's network, to create content for women, including ‘Rosé Roundtable,’ a YouTube series that has the sisters gabbing with girlfriends about everything from raising multi-cultural kids to body positivity.” “One thing that appeals to my sisters and me a lot is providing a realistic image of what life is like, which is why we're intrigued by working with influencers more,” Saldana told People. “If you're a mommy blogger and you're passionate about being a mom, that's amazing, and more people should know who you are! When it comes to industry people, it would be a dream come true to work with women like Victoria Alonso, who is a…producer at Marvel.” Several sources cite that Saldana is of Dominican, Haitian and Puerto Rican descent alongside some Lebanese roots. She has told media sources in the past that she also identifies as black. She is bilingual and is raising her three boys to be bilingual as well. "I come from a family of women. Of tough women," she told Allure Magazine. "Not in a bad way, just resilient, and strong, and determined, and super-opinionated." In several interviews since becoming a mom to twins in 2014 and another son earlier this year, Saldana reflects on motherhood and her ever-evolving role in Hollywood. "I have no problem admitting my errors; just have respect for me. If I am just like wallpaper, there's no need for me to be here,” she says to Allure. “It's kind of like that Nina Simone song—you've got to learn to leave the table when love isn't being served." For fans who wish to keep up with the busy actress and entrepreneur, Saldana can be found on social media on Twitter and Instagram @zoesaldana and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ZoeSaldana. azhealthandliving.com |September 2017

CAREER, BUSINESS & FINANCE

EXCEL & ACHIEVE

By Joe Thomas, founder and owner of Left Brain Digital

Hiring a Web Developer If you can afford to have your brand-new warehouse built from the ground up, who are you going to hire to build it? The intelligent answer is simple: a reputable building contractor with happy clients and lots of experience, right? Why would you invest your hard-earned dollars to hire anyone less than a pro? So why, then, would anyone take the opposite approach with their online business? Believe it or not, at least half the people reading this right now have done exactly that. You’ve spent months, in some cases years, developing your product, becoming an expert in your field or writing your book, and then paid absolutely no attention to where or how it's presented and sold. That's just like buying beautiful new furniture and not having a house to put it in. Do yourself a favor, when you've made the decision to open your business or sell your product online, make sure you have ALL the tools to make it successful. And for Pete's sake, make sure you hire the right developer. Here are a few tips to help you find that person:

Look for experience, reputation and track record. These are the three attributes to consider when engaging any professional. Find out about who you're entrusting your brand to. Ask for references – don't just look at the testimonials they’ve posted. Take a good look at their website. If it looks like a fifth-grader put it together, imagine how yours will look. Look at their portfolio or ask for a list of sites they have developed. If they can't show you immediately, or if they don’t have at least four or five sites to review, what are they afraid of?

It's not always about the price. Do NOT cut corners. Don't go with the cheapest deal you can find just because it's cheap. Think about what you’re buying: It's the vehicle that’s going to generate your revenue. Your website is the last thing you want to cut corners on. WARNING: Not going cheap does not mean you should go with the most expensive deal either; expensive doesn't always equal better.

Listen. You’re buying talent and experience. You listen to your doctor, your lawyer and your accountant – they're the professionals, after all. Now think about that when you decide that you know better or more than your web developer. If you made the right choice in hiring the developer, then listen to what he or she tells you. If you're not willing to trust their judgment or advice, then save your 56 September 2017 | azhealthandliving.com

money and build the site yourself. But don't complain about THAT decision later.

Have a plan. You need to know what your goals are and how to convey them to your developer BEFORE you hire anyone. If you aren't sure of your goals – WAIT. Do not hire anyone unless you are completely sure that they have a solid understanding of your needs and objectives.

Avoid any company or freelancer that has a “package.” You've seen it before. You're searching for a web designer and you find 25 sites that have the Gold/ Silver/Bronze package (or some cute little package names). They offer hourly rates and "additional page" costs. Here's a tip: stay away. There's no way a designer can give you exactly what you need based on his/her "package rate." Ask me 10 times and I will tell you 10 times – I can't give you a price if I don't know what your project is all about. Any pro developer will tell you the same thing. We need to know what we're developing before we know how much it's going to cost.

Know how to request a quote. Please don't ever email a developer and say, "Can you look at my site and tell me how much you would charge to redesign it or make it better?" Now, that's just asking for trouble, and here's why: a) You are already telling the developer you have no idea what you need. b) If the developer sends back an email that says, "I looked at your site and it would cost $xx.xx to redesign it or fix it" – RUN. Never hire a developer who doesn't want to talk to you first. A developer worth hiring is the one who wants to know about your project.

The Health Benefits of GrandparentGrandchild Relationships In the not-so-distant past, extended families were the norm, with multiple generations residing on the same street if not in the same house. Today the family unit is largely an amalgam of different situations. The rise of two-income families has pressured parents into finding child care situations. Quite often grandparents once again step in to offer guidance and support for youngsters. This can be a good thing for both the grandparents and the grandchildren. Although a bevy of psychological research focuses on parent-child relationships, new evidence points to the benefits of the grandchild-grandparent relationship as well. Close relationships between these different demographics is often a sign of strong familial ties. A study from researchers at Boston College discovered that emotionally close ties between grandparents and adult grandchildren reduced depressive symptoms in both groups. Research at the University of Oxford among English children between the ages 11 and 16 found that close grandparent-grandchild relationships were associated with benefits including fewer emotional and behavioral problems and fewer difficulties with peers. Adult and grandchildren alike benefit from relationships with their elders. Grandparents can provide a connection and exposure to different ideas while providing a link to family history and knowledge regarding traditions and customs not readily available elsewhere. Nurturing grandparent-grandchild experiences may be easy for families where grandparents live in the same house or close by. For others, it may take some effort. The following are some ways to facilitate time spent together.

Schedule regular family reunions or get-togethers Host or plan multi-generation events that bring the family together and expose children to various members of their family.

Promote one-on-one time 60 September 2017

| azhealthandliving.com

Have grandchildren spend time with grandparents in intimate settings. Alone time can be good for both and offers each undivided attention. A meal at a restaurant or time spent doing a puzzle or craft can be interesting to both generations involved.

Video chat when possible If distance makes frequent visits challenging, use technology to bridge that gap. Send photos, letters and electronic communications. Tech-savvy grandparents can use Skype or Facetime to stay in touch and speak one-on-one with their grandchildren.

Share skills with each other Either generation can play teacher to the other. Grandparents may have certain skills, such as baking, sewing or woodcrafts, they can impart that may not be readily taught today. Children can help grandparents navigate computers, video games or sports activities. Grandchildren can help grandparents feel younger, and grandchildren can learn new experiences from their grandparents.

Six Proven Tricks for Remembering Someone’s Name Forgetting people’s names is an age-old problem. If you have trouble forgetting people’s names it can be a social and career setback. But if you have trouble with this issue you’re not alone. Scientists have identified a condition that makes it difficult for some people to recognize familiar faces, including those of friends and family… and sometimes even themselves. The condition is essentially face blindness, or prosopagnosia, to be specific. It remains a mystery as to why it happens, but scientists do know that perfectly healthy, intelligent people can be blind to faces. If you’re one of the many who can’t remember a name, these memory hacks will help you never forget one:

Repeat their name out loud Researchers discovered that “memory is better when words are spoken aloud,” especially “if it is done in a context of communication,” says Professor Victor Boucher of the University of Montreal’s Department of Linguistics and Translation. In other words, repeating the person’s name you meet out loud within your conversation, will make it much more likely that you’ll remember it. When he says, “My name is John,” you can say, “It’s nice to meet you, John.”

Be motivated Chester Santos, an award-winning speaker and U.S. memory champion gives this advice: Imagine that a suitcase of $100,000 cash can be all yours if you can just remember the name of the next person you meet. Do you think you’d be able to remember that person’s name? Of course you will. “Reasons reap results,” as Santos puts it.

Focus If you aren’t listening intently, you will forget someone’s name. Winner of the USA Memory Championship in 2009 and 2010, Ron White said this about forgetting someone’s name two seconds after they said it; “This is not a memory problem. It is a focus problem.” 62 September 2017

| azhealthandliving.com

Develop the habit of focus. When meeting someone new, ask yourself what their name is before you’re introduced. This will help set your mind up to focus on learning their name.

Connect the name to something you already know You can solidify a name in your memory by linking the name to a person or object that’s already stored in your memory. The connection can be “anything at all that you already know,” says Santos. Say you meet someone named Mark. The name might make you think of Mark Twain, The Gospel of Mark, Mark Wahlberg, or Mark’s Pizza. The connection between the name and “literally anything,” as Santos emphasizes, will help that name be stored in your memory files.

Turn it into a visual Take a person’s name and imagine it as a visual. If you meet Jane, you might think of the word chain. Bill might become a dollar bill and Mary might become berry. Then you can visually connect that word to a unique aspect of that person’s appearance. For example, if Jane has long hair, you can imagine a chain running down her hair. If Bill has big ears you can imagine dollar bills coming out of his ears. And if Mary has blue eyes you can imagine blueberries in her eyes. It might sound silly and it will require your creativity, but Santos calls this method “very powerful and effective.”

Visiting Loved Ones in Assisted Living Facilities

or many seniors, a day arrives in their lives when it is no longer safe or practical to live at home alone. Assisted living facilities can help seniors adjust to their new situations. uch facilities typically offer comfortable surroundings, caring staff and all the amenities of home. ome people may feel anxious or awkward visiting assisted living facilities because it may shed light on the frailties or specialized needs of loved ones. his may be especially true if a loved one has a physical, neurological or mental illness. ather than avoiding visits, individuals can follow these guidelines.

Time visits right. Many residents have the most energy in

the morning or early afternoon right after meals. Call ahead to find out if there are any medical appointments or outings planned. isiting during meals or activities can be fun because you'll be engaged and will have something to keep both of you busy.

Limit distractions. ind a uiet and comfortable place at the facility where you can spend time with your loved one. his way you can focus most of your attention on the person you are visiting, and he or she can do the same. A sitting room or an outdoor area can be a nice place to spend time away from television or other people's conversations. Plan an excursion. If you are able to take the resident off the property, arrange to take them somewhere that would interest them. o not plan too much, because you want the excursion to be fun, not taxing. Bring along items.

ifts are not necessary, but photos, books, puzzles, or even keepsakes from home can serve as catalysts for wonderful conversations.

Help the conversation along. If a loved one has

dementia, visits can be especially challenging. owever, simply being present can be comforting for the person even if conversation is stilted. e patient and positive. ind topics that stimulate responses, and fill in if things get uiet.
