Colorado River Discovery Business focused on fun, future of national park The seeds for Colorado River Discovery were planted in 2005 by longtime rafting experts and friends Scott Seyler, John Vail and Mark Grisham. At the time, Grisham served as director of the Grand Canyon River Outfitters Association. Vail and Seyler served on the organization’s board of directors. After a board meeting, the three friends began talking about the National Parks Service. As it turned out, the contract through the National Parks Service to provide day trips through the Colorado River was up for renewal. Within days, the team – who had more than 60 years of rafting experience between them at the time – was developing a proposal, thanks to Grisham’s expertise in legalities coupled with Vail and Seyler’s expertise in operations, equipment and marketing. “In 2006, our team – now Colorado River Discovery – was awarded the contract and began providing our now-famous one-day rafting trips anywhere along the Colorado River every March to November,” Seyler says. Today, Colorado River Discovery is now 65 team members strong – including Seyler’s son, Korey and wife, Shawn, making it a family affair – and takes more than 50,000 visitors on rafting tours each year.

National parks partnership “The National Park Service preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations,” Seyler says. “As such, they cooperate with partners – like us – to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world.” Because Colorado River Discovery operates in a natural resource and in partnership with the National Parks Service, they are focused on making every effort to respect the surrounding land while providing guests with once-in-alifetime adventure opportunities on the Colorado River. “Colorado River Discovery incorporates environmentally responsible practices at every level of our business,” Seyler says. “For example, over the past decade, we’ve reduced our fuel consumption by 20 percent. on education, creative recycling and reuse programs on-site and other small steps that combine to make a big difference to the future of the Colorado River.”

Sustainability on the water “In 2016, the National Parks Service will celebrate its Centennial, focusing on the achievements of the past 100 years as well as looking forward to the future,” Seyler says. “It is important to us that we do the same in a big way.” As such, Colorado River Discovery is pleased to announce the launch Colorado River’s first 100 percent electric raft. The highly anticipated raft is currently in the final stages of testing by Colorado River Discovery and in the certification process by the U.S. Coast Guard and registration process with the Arizona Game and Fish Department, and will make its official public debut in spring 2016. “The electric raft is the culmination of nearly a decade of research and development and will be the first of its kind on the Colorado River,” Seyler says. “The electric raft produces zero emissions, exponentially reducing waste products that could pollute the environment or disrupt the climate. Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation Promoting the self-esteem and enriching the lives of Arizona’s children in foster care According to the Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation (AFFCF), more than 30 children enter foster care in Arizona each day. “Many times they come with little more than the clothes on their back or what they can carry in a trash bag,” cites the nonprofit’s website, www.affcf.org. “They may have never ridden a bicycle or sat down for a family meal. They may be struggling to keep up in school or never dared dream of playing a sport.” Fortunately, the AFFCF is here to help. “The Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation promotes the self-esteem and enriches the lives of Arizona’s children in foster care by funding social, athletic and educational activities and items that provide them with quality experiences while they live through very difficult circumstances,” explains AFFCF Executive Director Kris Jacober. The nonprofit does this in many ways. Most recently, AFFCF helped the state’s foster kids enjoy summer activities and head back to school with the proper supplies. Over the summer this included funding summer camps, field trips, bicycles and gear, trips to Disneyland, swimming lessons, tutoring and more. For back to school season last month, the organization hosted a Backpack and School Supply Drive. This month, Papa Murphy’s Take ‘N’ Bake Pizza has launched a new campaign to benefit the Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation. In addition to focusing on younger children, AFFCF also places an emphasis on helping teens that are about to age out of the foster care system. One such program is called Keys to Success. “AFFCF has recently embarked on a new program to serve young men and women in foster care ages 15 to 17,” according to the website. “More than 800 youth will age out of foster care at age 18 in Arizona this year without family relationships to support them and few financialresources.”

Restless Legs Syndrome Affects Many Millions of people are afflicted with restless legs syndrome, an uncomfortable neurological condition that may lead them to move their limbs repeatedly to find relief. In spite of its name, restless legs syndrome or RLS, is not limited to the lower extremities, as some of the sensations associated with the condition are felt in the arms as well. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a division of the National Institutes of Health, says as much as 10 percent of the United States population may have RLS. Several studies show that approximately 2 to 3 percent of adults are affected by moderate to severe RLS, which occurs in both men and women, though incidence of the condition is twice as high among women. Although people of any age can be diagnosed with RLS, it is more often diagnosed in middle-aged men, women and seniors. The most common symptom of RLS is an irresistible urge to move because of uncomfortable, and sometimes painful, sensations deep within the body. The sensations often defy description but can range from pain, aching, creeping, crawling or prickling feelings. Symptoms may occur at any time but are most evident when the body is at rest, whether sitting down for long periods or when going to sleep. Symptoms may increase in severity throughout the night. Those with RLS frequently experience periodic limb movements characterized by jerking and twitching, which can make it difficult to fall and stay asleep. Sleep deprivation may carry-over into daytime hours and make daily life difficult. Many with RLS also have concentration problems, impaired memory, or struggle to perform daily tasks due to exhaustion. RLS symptoms may vary and change from day to day. Symptoms may subside early in the morning, but they often reappear and worsen at night. Individuals with Parkinson's disease often have RLS as well. RLS may be a genetic condition, as it seems to run in families. Pregnancy, chronic diseases, and medications can also aggravate symptoms of RLS. RLS is diagnosed by looking at certain qualifying criteria. Physicians will document symptoms and note when they occur. Treatment may involve a mixture of medications as well as therapies for relieving symptoms. Medications for RLS may lose their efficacy over time, and doctors may have to work with patients to develop a treatment plan that works.

Get smart. Brush up on your reproduction basics. Timing

is critical. Women are most fertile during and just before ovulation. Learn how to pinpoint those days. And guys, fertility issues are as likely on your end as hers. It may be time for boxers. Study up.

Get close. Infertility can put a huge strain on a relationship. Sex can become a chore where it once was fun. Remember, now more than ever, it takes two. Are You Misguided In Your Headache Treatment? It’s human nature to want to take the shortest route to ending debilitating pain, and that’s part of why the pharmaceutical industry makes its hundreds of billions of dollars each year. Just like we’re all tempted to reach for that sweet, salty, or fatty snack when we’re hungry, many of us want to treat our chronic headaches with a quick fix by popping a pill. While it’s understandable, pills are often another example of the easy path being a temporary one. Just like a candy bar ensures hunger will come raging back sooner than later, so too does pain medication tend to guarantee a future date with pain. Many headache sufferers may be under the mistaken impression that their headache is the result of nerves, but that’s wrong in most cases. Most pain originates in muscle and connective tissues. Here are a few ways to best navigate the problem of painful and persistent headaches.

Avoid misdiagnosis. Doctors are experts who spend many years in college, training and helping others. Patients figure that surely they know best. But that’s not 100 percent true. A real estate agent can’t make you happy without your input. A financial advisor cannot meet your goals unless you communicate your goals and money situation effectively. The same is true for doctors, who are busy in today’s health care system and may be misled by patients, who tend to be flustered and potentially vague about their symptoms. In other words, patients need to be their own top advocate for their own health, and that means doing one’s due diligence in paying close attention to symptoms, communicating effectively to health care providers, and considering multiple causes. A simple pain-relieving prescription is often not a lasting solution. Don’t just treat your symptoms; get to the root cause. As mentioned, pain-relief drugs are like candy bars for hunger – they only kick the problem down the road temporarily. neck, forward head posture, cervical alignment and its effect on the cranial nerves and vertebral artery. And, for millions of sufferers, the cause of headaches is a misaligned bite. This includes the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ. This is located at the front of the ear where the temporal bone meets the lower jaw on the side of the head.

Treating Toenail Fungus Naturally By MS

In addition, such treatments can be harmful to men and women with sensitive skin, potentially resulting in rashes and redness. The risks associated with medications and other toenail fungus treatments have led many men and women to seek natural treatments that won't be accompanied by potentially unhealthy and painful side effects. In addition to addressing toenail fungus, there are other ways men and women can improve the appearance of their feet.

Cast out calluses and corns. Calluses and corns appear when dead skin builds up along the heels, toes, and bony areas of the feet. While unsightly, calluses and corns can be easily eliminated with a pumice stone or foot file used immediately after showering. Consult a podiatrist if your

calluses or corns are especially pesky and difficult to remove.

Address ingrown toenails. Athletes and dancers tend to suffer the most from ingrown toenails, a potentially painful condition wherein the toenail grows into the surrounding skin. Ingrown toenails are often a byproduct of the toes rubbing tightly against the shoe during physical activity. Soaking feet in an Epsom salt bath twice a day for 15 minutes can reduce pain and inflammation, while cutting toenails straight across can reduce the likelihood that the nails will grow into the skin.

Wear footwear that fits. Wearing footwear that's too small or restrictive can increase your risk of ingrown toenails and hammertoe, a deformity that occurs when the toes become claw-like. Ill-fitting footwear can cause hammertoes or aggravate preexisting hammertoes, while also increasing the risk of friction between the toes and the interior of the shoes, potentially causing ingrown toenails. Dealing with Life’s Detours The loss of a job; a bad breakup; a nasty accident; a new, obsessive habit; a big move to a new town; health problems experienced by you or a loved one – these are some of the many things that can turn your life upside down. These are life’s detours that you don’t expect. Could there be a good way to respond to such turns in life? Is it honest to “look on the bright side?” Isn’t the root feeling hurt? I don’t think most people would ask you to deny your feelings, but you don’t have to be led by the nose by feelings, which have a primary characteristic of being temporary. Life is change – it’s axiomatic. Most of us accept this on an intellectual, abstract basis. But when it comes to experiencing change, we often resist it. Fear of change causes immense yet unnecessary suffering. Personal growth and maturity are based largely on how you respond to life’s unexpected detours. Here are a few basic steps to dealing with life’s detours:

Ask yourself about opportunity. We don’t like most of life’s detours because they force us out of our comfort zone. New duties at work or a request from a spouse may not only pique our defenses but also make us wonder, “Can I do this?” Fear and anxiety may push us to focus on our weaknesses and convince us of what we cannot do. When we make a simple shift in mentality, however, we can empower the beginning of personal growth by seeing unprecedented challenges as opportunities. Are you willing to change? If not, then you can’t see opportunity. Change is inevitable growth is optional. If your wife asks you for a more patient attitude, for example, will you grow with an open heart or dig your heels in. She may not divorce you if you remain stubborn, but your relationship will likely flounder. Seeing a challenge as an opportunity enables selfimprovement. A. For most people walking is a good thing.

Some people however, find that walking makes their back, buttocks-hips or legs, feel worse- not better. Commonly patients will tell me when they walk a certain distance, like to their mailbox for instance; they need to rest because of an unpleasant feeling in their back or hips or their legs. They describe different symptoms like heaviness, numbness or just an uncomfortable feeling. When they sit and rest, gradually their legs feel better. Does this sound familiar? It is a classic sign of a condition called intermittent (meaning it comes and goes) claudication (unpleasant symptoms which are increased by physical activity). Thus intermittent claudication literally means unpleasant symptoms that become worse with increased activity and lessen or go way when sitting or resting, usually of the lower back, hips or legs. One common cause of leg claudication is degeneration of the discs in the lower back, called spinal stenosis. Back degeneration causes squeezing of the nerves that begin in the back, but travel down the legs. When you walk these nerves are irritated and produce your symptoms.

Flexion-Distraction is an exciting new

treatment for these symptoms. Research in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science, suggests it may increase disc height (counteract the effects of disc degeneration) and another research report published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, suggests that flexion distraction can produce symptom relief lasting up to one year. Cataracts are a clouding of the lens of the eye. As a person ages, the protein of the lens becomes dense and opaque. Cataracts start out small but as they progress, they become yellow or brown and impede light from getting to the back of the eye, blurring vision. Although age is the most common cause of cataract formation, they can also be caused by trauma to the eye, use of systemic medications, such as steroids, or by metabolic processes, such as diabetes. Common early symptoms of cataracts are blurred vision and glare, especially at night. As cataracts progress, vision becomes cloudier and if left alone can become so dense that no light can get to the eye and blindness can occur. While cataracts are not a leading cause of blindness in the U.S., they are in other parts of the world. Blindness does not usually occur here because of early detection and education about cataracts. It is imperative to have your eyes checked regularly, especially after the age of 60, to determine if you have cataracts. In the early stages of cataract formation vision may be improved with a change in glasses but ultimately surgery may be required to restore vision. The serious and life-threatening problems start when sleepers begin experiencing apneas, where breathing stops and hypopneas, where breathing is shallow due to an obstruction. As lipomas increase in size though, there have been cases in which malignant (cancerous) transformation has occurred. Approximately 1 percent of the population has a lipoma, and they can occur at any age but most often in age ranges of 40-60 years old. The possibility of a lipoma undergoing a malignant change to a liposarcoma is why most tumors should be removed. The definitive characteristics of a lump are not fully known until it is removed and examined under a microscope.

Communication in Relationships Married couples should have plenty to say to each other, but research says communication is one of the issues they struggle with most. Part of the problem may be that communication is a twoway street, requiring both partners to do it well. And some subjects are more ticklish than others to bring up. Healthy couple communication is not just about expressing your needs, but also about being an active listener and desiring to understand your partner’s perspective. For couples, communication is like oxygen. The relationship needs it to stay alive. Couples sometimes avoid difficult conversations and conflict because they fear it will turn ugly. When it comes to communicating, there are a few traps to watch out for and some effective strategies to employ.

Getting passive-aggressive. Some people act out their

feelings instead of talking about them. That’s called being passive-aggressive and as a relationship strategy it ranks near the bottom. You say one thing and do another, or worse, you say nothing but roll your eyes or sigh dramatically. This communicates judgment and contempt, which is disrespectful to your partner.

It’s common knowledge that cane sugar is unhealthy—it raises blood sugar and weakens the immune system, which can cause many health conditions such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. Here are five alternatives to sugar.

Organic Honey. Honey remains the holy grail of natural

sweeteners. Not chemically altered from its natural form, it contains small amounts of vitamins and minerals, including niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and zinc Uses: sweeten peanut butter sandwiches and add to breakfast foods like pancakes and smoothies.

Maple Syrup contains an antioxidant called polyphenols

that has been shown in studies to prevent cancer and other diseases. Uses: Maple syrup can be used instead of store bought pancake syrup, which is likely processed and contains numerous chemical additives. It can also be used for baking—use equal parts syrup to cane sugar in recipes for cookies and cakes.

Organic Brown Rice Syrup. The less known of the

natural sweeteners, Brown Rice Syrup is arguable less sweet with a mild flavor and thick consistency. The milder taste is result from of fact that this syrup is a complex carbohydrate extracted from whole grain rice, so it contains less natural sugar and processes more slowly in the body. Uses: Alternative for corn syrup, homemade granola bars.

Pureed or Mashed Organic Fruit. Another easy fix to

replace sugar in baking for kids is to use pureed or mashed fruit. Whole fruit contains the fiber and protein that is removed from fruit juice, so liquefying whole pieces of fruit is a more nutritious option than fruit juice. Uses: Bananas, apples, or berries can take the place of sugar when making muffins, can be added to pancakes and smoothies, and poured over oatmeal or other hot cereal.

Organic Agave. With a low glycemic index, agave doesn’t make blood sugar in the body to spike as much as cane sugar does. Uses: Add to smoothies, pancakes and cereal.

Converting a Kid's Room into an Adult Space When a young adult leaves the comforts of home to set out on his or her own, homeowners are left with a bedroom that just calls out to be made over. However, the experience of a child leaving the nest can be bittersweet, and some parents struggle with the decision to renovate or leave the room intact. Converting a room can be an emotional process, but there are several different ways to put a newly vacated room to good use. What to do with a room may hinge on who still lives in the house. Another child, for instance, may be interested in upgrading to the room if it is larger or has amenities that the previous bedroom does not offer, like a better view or a bigger closet. Some have plans for a craft space or a library. Perhaps the room would be perfect for a man cave or a quiet sitting area. Keep in mind that the room may hold sentimental value for the child, so converting the space is not something that should happen abruptly or without prior notice given to the former occupant. Communication is key before the room can be permanently changed into a new room. To get started, follow these guidelines.

Start slowly. Broach the subject with the former occupant of the room to gauge his or her reaction to the idea. If your child is supportive, then the process may move along more quickly. If not, you may need to wait a little longer before starting the renovation.

Go through the room's contents together. Your child may feel his or her private sanctums were violated if you simply box up belongings, and ready them to be taken away. Instead, go through the room together and allow your son or daughter to pack away items of sentimental value. Other items can be donated. Consider which pieces of furniture might be kept and repurposed.

Keep some items of value. Remember, you don't want your child to feel like his or her identity has been erased from the house. Find a way to incorporate something from the bedroom into the new design to pay homage to the person who lived and grew up in the room. Keep a square of removed wallpaper and frame it. Put some wellread childhood books on a shelf. Have a place of honor for the first soccer trophy. furniture and any items, draw up a detailed renovation plan and establish a budget. If the room will become a guest room, the basics may already be there and you simply need to introduce new linens and a new paint color to transform the space. Consider keeping the room functional as a sleeping space in some way — whether moving in a sleeper sofa or making a regular bed into a daybed —so when your son or daughter comes to visit, he or she will have a comfortable space.

Make it sophisticated. Adult spaces differ from children's spaces in their sophistication. Starting fresh with more streamlined furniture and bolder colors in the room will give it a grown-up look. Converting a child's former bedroom into a new and exciting living space for adults takes some planning and sensitivity. A collaborative effort between parent and child can make the process can go much more smoothly.

Many know all too well that there are no shortcuts to lasting weight loss, particularly because real weight loss requires real change: change of perspective, change of habits, change of routine, and change of attitude. This is true no matter what your age happens to be. But it’s also true that as you age, you face different challenges as your body, responsibilities, priorities, and life circumstances change. Consider the following recommendations to overcome obstacles and feel healthier than ever.

30s. Career and family demands may leave you feeling short on time, all the time. Choose fruit, nuts, and yogurt on the go, rather than skipping a meal and ‘making up for it’ later. This could cause you to get so hungry that you end up binge eating.

• If you have young children, they may want sugary snacks or other foods that aren’t good for them – or you. Be mindful about snacking with your children. You don’t need to eat a cookie (or two) every time they do. Avoid eating what they leave on their plates. • Fill the fridge and cupboards with healthy options. By choosing well at the grocery store, you and your family will have good choices available at home. • If you can’t make it to a gym, find other opportunities to stay active. Park as far as is practical from your destination, take the stairs instead of the elevator, and go on walks, even if they’re short – such as during a break at work.

40s. Your metabolism will start to slow down. We lose about 5 percent of our metabolic rate for each decade of aging, according to some estimates.

• Heat up your body’s furnace by eating healthy calories in the morning, including high-fiber foods to keep you satisfied well into the day. • Maintaining, or even building, muscle mass is a key way to combat a slower metabolism. Consider investing time and money in a personal trainer. Even just a few sessions can help you learn strength training techniques and routines that you perform on your own. • Men experience a gradual loss of testosterone, which can mean lower energy over time. Most women will experience hormonal changes, including declining estrogen and progesterone levels, which can lead to fatigue. It may seem counterintuitive, but regular exercise, such as a 30-minute walk most days, can increase your energy.

• Also, aim to get at least seven hours of sleep each night. If you feel tired, try a short nap to catch up on sleep and feel refreshed.

50s. Effects of excess weight, including elevated blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and arthritis, are most likely to appear beginning in this decade.

• Your metabolism will continue to slow down, and you will likely gain weight unless you make changes to your diet. • Avoid using food to deal with stress. Be deliberate about finding alternative ways to unwind and relax. • Strategically replace high-calorie foods or drinks with lower-calorie ones.

60s. If you retire from a full-time job outside of the home,

you may go from being partially active to being inactive. But don’t retire to the couch. • Pursue new interests, passions, goals and activities, or take the time to rekindle old ones. • Gather a group of friends for a game of tennis or a round of golf, or buddy up with someone for regular walks. • Try activities to help you improve your flexibility, such as yoga. • You may feel some limits in what your body can do. For example, you may experience joint pain or difficulty with balance. Hair Care Made Simple Hair is typically taken for granted until something goes awry. Hair loss can result from genetics, disease or poor hair hygiene. While there's little a person can do about genetics or hair loss related to illness, good hair hygiene should be a part of everyone's beauty and grooming regimen. A good head of hair can enhance a person's appearance. Hair hygiene is important, but many do not know where to begin, and myths abound when it comes to hair care. It's time to wash away the fiction from the facts.

There is no need to shampoo every day. Some think

they'll be left with a head of dirty, smelly hair if they do not lather up every day, but this is inaccurate. Most people can go a day or more between washing their hair, and waiting between washes actually can be beneficial. According to Paradi Mirmirani, M.D., a dermatologist in California specializing in hair research, hair is fiber, and the more you wash it, the worse it's going to look. People with curly, dry, or processed hair can probably go longer between washings than those with thin, straight hair. This enables oils from the scalp to travel down the hair shaft and keep the cuticle healthy.

Conditioner can keep hair smooth and shiny. Some

question the necessity for conditioner while others can't live without it. Those with coarse or dry hair usually find that conditioning a few times a week is necessary to tame hair and keep it shiny and looking healthy. On the flip side, those with naturally moist hair may not need to use conditioner more than once per week. Overuse of conditioner can actually contribute to making hair look dull, dry and weighed down. People with thin hair may only want to apply conditioner to the ends so as not to make hair flat and heavy. Many people need to experiment with conditioner to find a routine that works.

More lather isn't necessarily better. Contrary to popular

belief, shampoos that generate mounds of rich lather are not necessarily better for your hair. Sulfates are commonly used as lathering agents and may be the first ingredients in many commercially produced shampoos. Sulfates make water feel more wet and spread cleaning ingredients from the shampoo more readily across the hair shaft. However, these same cleansers can dehydrate the sebaceous glands and strip the scalp of essential oils and natural moisture. Many stylists recommend sulfate-free shampoos because they are more gentle on the hair. Brushing can be beneficial. While you may not need

100 strokes of the hairbrush to achieve shiny hair, brushing hair gently each day can untangle the hair and help transfer oils from the scalp down the hair shaft and throughout the hair. The key is not to brush too often or too vigorously. Look for a brush with long, plastic bristles that bend. A brush with a rubber base with vents is also good. Do not brush so hard that you scratch your scalp or tear out hair from the roots. The goal is to prevent breakage. Many hair situations not only can be remedied at home, but a person can also consult with a stylist to develop a hair care routine. People experiencing hair problems that are not easily fixed should speak to dermatologists, as such problems may be symptoms of medical issues.


How to Banish Those Gray Hairs By MS

Roughly, one in five Americans uses hair dye to enhance their looks or hide gray hair. But concerns about gray hair and looking older are not exclusive to the United States. The trouble with gray hair – and specially hair close to the temples – is that such hair tends to be coarser and more resistant to absorbing hair color than other hair. It can be difficult to cover the gray hairs, and then once it is dyed, gray hair may end up showing prematurely. Gray hair results from the hair cortex, or the middle layer of the hair, losing both the yellow and red pigments that are normally present in the strands. In order to successfully cover grays, these pigments need to be replaced using dyes that have red, yellow and blue bases. Shades characterized as "neutral" are usually the best bets. Avoid ash colors, which tend to have a blue, green or violet base. The hair shaft will pick up the underlying color but not absorb the intended color. Resistant grays may need the color solution to remain on much longer than is normal or recommended. Sometimes it can take up to 45 minutes for resistant grays to absorb dye. Certain manufacturers make dyes that are designed specifically for gray hair and allow for better penetration. Sometimes gray hair may need to be pre-softened with peroxide before color application. The peroxide will raise the hair shaft and enable the color to penetrate better. Coloring hair at home is possible but may not produce the most desirable results, and there is a greater chance of user error with drugstore coloring products. When making drastic changes to hair color, it may be best to consult with a professional stylist and discuss color preferences. The stylist can then create a custom color and apply it evenly to ensure complete coverage. Turn off your computer Computers are notorious for sucking you into the vortex of daily emails and tasks. Instead, put pen to paper. There’s magic in just writing it all-out by hand first.

Think “where” and not “how” Look at the road in front of you. Don’t focus on how you’ll make it happen. The “how” mentality is sort of like trying to edit a first draft before it is written; the “where” mentality allows you to simply get your ideas out first. Where do you want your company to go? Think outside the box Getting out of your comfort zone will change your usual thought patterns and spark creativity. Use a technique called ‘mind-mapping,’ which isn’t so much formal writing as it is plopping down random thoughts onto paper and fleshing them out later. Mindmapping allows you to brainstorm without having to provide explanations of strategies for achieving the desired goal. Here’s a good rule: if what you think about during one these sessions seems bizarre or unlikely, it’s something you should definitely include in your vision.

The busy actress embraces the beauty of aging German actress and former fashion model Diane Kruger will celebrate the big 4-0 next year, and instead of dreading her birthday like many Hollywood starlets, she appears to be embracing the idea that women only gain beauty and wisdom, as they grow older. “I want to age gracefully and I don’t judge those who get injections. But we can’t age backwards, so you have to embrace it sometime,” Kruger told Harper's Bazaar Australia in their November 2014 issue. Originally, a fashion model, German-born Kruger is a multifaceted star. She’s trilingual (French, German and English), has graced magazine covers and ads internationally, and has starred in seemingly countless movies for more than a decade. Some of her highlighted roles include Troy, National Treasure, The Host, Unknown and more. In addition to the big screen, she starred in the FX television crime drama series The Bridge. According to multiple sources, she also has several films in the works, including Fathers and Daughters, Disorder and Sky. She is currently filming The Infiltrator, which is due out next year. Recently, she talked to Elle Canada about her projects. “I co-produced Sky with one of my best friends, director Fabienne Berthaud. She’s very near and dear to my heart. Insights for Choosing a Trustee The greatest transfer of wealth in history is happening right now, according to a study from the Boston College Center on Wealth and Philanthropy. A staggering amount – $59 trillion – is projected to be passed down to heirs, charities, and taxes between 2007 and 2061. We are in the middle of a massive, unprecedented wealth transfer from the World War II generation to the Baby Boomers, and then to subsequent generations. But much of that wealth will not be given to beneficiaries outright. Instead, it will be held in a trust, which is a distinct entity, much like a corporation. The trust is managed by a trustee, who protects the trust property for the benefit of the beneficiaries. Sounds good – as long as trustees are honest individuals who don’t use the trust as a personal ATM, and simmering rivalries among beneficiaries don’t explode. Some trusts will be competently managed. Others will be abused in a number of ways the creator of the trust had not intended. The best way to ensure money is handled correctly – and honestly – is to pick the right trustee, but the right one may not be obvious.

Don’t choose just anyone Family members, friends, and even felons theoretically could be entrusted with managing an inheritor’s money. But tread carefully. Your hard-earned money could be fought over, misspent, or squandered if you leave inheritances in a haphazard way or choose a trustee who handles the trust improperly. A family member often is chosen, but he warns that can lead to ill will among relatives. The decision on the trustee should be 60

treated like a business consideration, not a personal one.

Multiple trustees are allowed, but can cause problems Personal relationships that were previously cordial can turn icy when there are multiple trustees. Co-trustees administer the trust by majority rule unless the trust document demands unanimous decisions. A common problem is there are two co-trustees who don’t get along, but must agree on everything. It may make sense to have a third co-trustee, such as an impartial trust attorney or bank or trust company, to serve as the tiebreaker.

Perspective on whether to be a trustee: • “I am trusted, but should I be a trustee?” Being a trustee is a great responsibility. Perfection is not required,


but incompetence won’t be tolerated. Criticisms could flow freely. If you’re holding a lot of cash and the markets go up, beneficiaries complain that you failed to capture those gains. If you’re fully invested in the market and the market takes a dip, the beneficiaries complain that you are overexposed. If one of six beneficiaries requests funds for a minor child’s education, the other five will want a similar distribution—regardless of need. You may be fairly compensated for your duties as trustee, but the money may not be worth the potential headaches. • You don’t have to accept the appointment. You can decline to serve. Merely sign a one-page document, which can be as brief as a sentence, stating you decline. No reason is required. Deliver your statement, and a copy of the trust, including all original documents you have, to the beneficiaries and the successor trustee named in the trust document. If no successor trustee is named, you should notify the beneficiaries in writing that you decline to serve and they should retain counsel to protect their interests.

Regulatory Changes & Retirement Savings By Bryan S. Slovon, founder and CEO of Stuart Financial Group

Investors who count on their retirement accounts to see them through their golden years sometimes find that those savings add up to less than anticipated. One reason: Broker fees they either didn’t realize they were paying, or which were higher than need be. But that could be changing. The Obama administration has proposed tougher regulations that officials say would curb “hidden” fees and broker conflicts of interest that can siphon off savings. The proposal, with details still being hashed out in Washington, D.C., would broaden the definition of which investment advisors are considered fiduciaries, putting them under greater scrutiny of the Department of Labor if they don’t put their clients’ interests ahead of their own. Right now, many investment advisors are only required to consider whether an investment is suitable for their clients. They can steer the clients to investments that cost more, that are proprietary to the firm for which they work, or yield lower returns, but result in fatter commissions or fees for the advisors and their firm. This change is a big deal because a fiduciary has a higher level of responsibility. A lot of the details are still being ironed out, though, and it’s possible it could drive up costs as companies redo their (investment) products. Also, it’s worth noting that sometimes the fees are already low and it’s not an issue. The government estimates there could be $40 billion in savings for investors over the next 10 years. Whether that estimate proves accurate or not, it is true that big savings are possible when fees are lower. For example, just a one percentage-point difference can lower savings by more than 25 percent over 35 years. Let’s say you had a $100,000 retirement account that grew at 5 percent annually over 35 years. A 1 percent lower return would reduce the value of that account by more than $156,000. That is huge. Here are some suggestions for investors, regardless of what happens with the proposed changes in Washington:

Know and understand your fees. Retirement-plan holders should look at and understand their fees, which are

Review your family’s risk tolerance. Too often, the

people who advise you on your retirement accounts don’t look at your overall financial picture. They know about your retirement plan that they manage, but may not know about other accounts you hold elsewhere or know nothing about your tax information. Another key issue is taking into account how much money your spouse has and if their retirement savings are to be included for both of you in your retirement income plan. Perhaps it’s a second marriage for you or your spouse. It’s important for a financial advisor to look at your family’s unique situation and be comprehensive.

Consider your health situation. People have two major concerns going into retirement. The first is outliving their money. People may work for 30 or 40 years, but then have nearly that much time in retirement. The second concern is health care costs. For example, there are still lots of questions revolving around the Affordable Care Act and how it might affect expenses. Also, the majority of Americans don’t do any long-term care planning, even though many people will end up in need of some sort of care, such as a nursing home or assisted-living facility.
