"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.
"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp

It’s not in your head.
Bring more pleasure back into your life &
BECOME A MORE INTIMATE YOU!
T
he loss of sexual pleasure and enjoyment is not in your head. Pregnancy, childbirth, perimenopause, menopause, and the natural aging process all have an impact on the appearance, tightness, and lubrication of a woman’s vagina. These
changes can all diminish a woman’s pleasure and desire for sexual intimacy. Lack of sexual intimacy can have a detrimental effect on a woman’s well-being, overall happiness, and contentment in a relationship-by both partners! Don’t let discomfort hinder your pleasure at any age. Additional benefits of the procedure are visible plumpness and improved aesthetic appearance as well as treatment of urinary leakage or stress incontinence.
What do you do? Now there’s a pain-free, risk-free, non-surgical solution that brings immediate relief with no side effects. It’s ThermiVa-a better alternative to invasive and risky vaginal surgery, which is painful and requires a long, sex-free recovery period-not exactly the first step you want to take in rebuilding intimacy and sexual satisfaction. What is ThermiVa? ThermiVa treatments are administered in a series of three appointments, spaced 4 weeks apart. Each one is only about 30 minutes and requires no downtime afterward, women are able to return to normal activities as soon as they walk out and many report having improved intimacy that night with both parties noticing a difference! ThermiVa delivers comfortable controlled heat, generated by radiofrequency through a small proble. This heat causes tissues to contract and restores tightness, while stimulating the production of collagen to increase moisture and lubrication. Both of which lead to an improved vaginal appearance and function leading to enhanced intimacy, confidence, and ultimately satisfaction. This regenerated pelvic floor strength is also what aids in issues of urinary stress incontinence.
After all, what other treatment has a 100% patient satisfaction rating?

“I am doing all things through God who strengthens me. The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called Failure, a loop called Confusion, speed bumps called Friends, red lights called Enemies, caution lights called Family. You will have flats called Jobs. But, if you have a spare called Determination, an engine called Perseverance, insurance called Faith, a driver called God, you will make it to a place called Success.” ~Author Unknown Welcome to our eight-year anniversary issue. A special thanks to God, our advertisers, staff, contributors, community partners and you, our readers, for making this magazine possible.
Leviticus 19:13 Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning.
I believe God has blessed everyone equally, although, in giving us free will, one’s choice of path can lead to either great accomplishments or strong disappointments. Here at Arizona Health & Living we choose to follow God’s plan. We don’t envy or chase what others are doing, letting each run their own race. We carry through our ideas, led by faith, and do all with grace.
Psalm 112:5 A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.
We will continue to follow His plan without fear, and humble ourselves unto all, to do the best we can in relaying information for everyone to live healthier lives. Here are a few Bible verses to encourage you to plant seeds of greatness: Matthew 17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Deuteronomy 8:18 But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Proverbs 13:11 Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase. Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
Proverbs 16:8 Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues without right. Proverbs 19:17 He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again. Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. Mark 8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? We at Great Central Sun Media Group, home of Arizona Health & Living Magazine, are very grateful! I Praise God for another amazing year! Thank you! Until next time,
God Bless You for Your Support! Here to serve,

Desert Mountain Fine Art A new art gallery brings contemporary and traditional works to the Valley
From the very beginning to the very end, the creation of a bronze sculpture is a 32-step affair that can take upwards of three months to complete – often longer. Tools needed include clay, bronze, an incredible attention to detail and a burning passion for all things art. Phillip Payne, co-owner and artist-in-residence at Desert Mountain Fine Art gallery in Scottsdale, was raised surrounded by these ingredients and has turned them into a beautiful, colorful career. Son of Ken Payne, the founder of Sedona’s Mountain Trails Gallery and a pioneer of live sculpting in Tlaquepaque, Phillip grew up immersed in the world of Western art. Ken Payne sold Mountain Trails Gallery in 1997 and began dedicating even more time to being an artist and father. For the next seven years the family spent time in Chinle, Arizona on the Navajo reservation. They also traveled to study art around the world including the masters in Greece, Italy, and even the pyramids in Egypt. With so many artists and so much inspiration around him, Phillip at the young age of 15 created and sold his first bronze sculpture. Since then, he’s strived to bring a fresh approach to this medium. “I grew up hearing people say that everything had already been done and that we, as artists, were just adding our personal touch on an existing idea and I couldn't accept that,” says Phillip. “So I try to look at what has been done so that I can avoid repeating the same experiments, or artistic creations, and move forward.”
Desert Mountain Fine Art gallery is Phillip’s way of paving the way for other artists while also innovating the way that art is accessed in the Valley. Together with his wife Gabi, who is also a co-creator and artist-in-residence at the gallery, the Paynes are aiming to highlight the importance of knowing the story behind a piece and respecting that in purchase and ownership. “For us, art has a meaningful and impactful purpose: it creates joy and beauty whilst simultaneously improving our culture and unifying the community,” he says. “We are optimistic that Desert Mountain Fine Art will introduce the community to new artists and masters.” Desert Mountain Fine Art showcases a variety of original works with a surprising range of value including western, pop, photography, contemporary and bronze sculptures. Artists include B.C. Nowlin, Ken Payne, and Bette Ridgeway.

HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
SUPPORT LOCAL
By Liz Renninger
The Purple Society
A local nonprofit releases an app to help parents navigate childhood cancer treatments For Anthony and Suzann Conti, a surprise diagnosis in 2008 for their seemingly healthy 12-year-old daughter Nitalia changed their lives forever. “I took her in for what I thought would be a routine eye exam,” says Suzann. “It was there that they told us she had brain cancer.” The doctor gave Nitalia two months to live. “They didn’t know how strong our little girl was,” says Anthony. “She gave us two and a half more years. It was during that time she started The Purple Society.” Founded in January 2011 by Nitalia, The Purple Society is a 501c3 nonprofit foundation designed to connect families fighting childhood cancer with pertinent treatment information, clinical trials, cutting-edge research and much needed support. The Scottsdale-based nonprofit was born out of the struggles the Conti family experienced during Nitalia’s battle with and devastating loss to brain cancer. Anthony and Suzann are co-founders of the organization. “Nitalia would go to the hospital and see families who didn’t have the tools and resources to fight their child’s diagnosis,” says Anthony. “She knew knowledge was the key in a cancer diagnosis and wanted an organization that could help arm families with what they needed to be the best advocate they could be for their child.” Anthony and Suzann have continued to carry on the mission of The Purple Society after their daughter’s passing. Recently, the organization launched The Purple Drug Guide. It’s a free app that is available on Android and iOS devices.
The unique drug research tool within the app combines detailed treatment information in a user-friendly format unlike anything else out there, the family assures. The app is designed to make cancer drugs easy to find and understand. Families can even search and compare pricing information. A software designer by trade, Anthony created the app in two years. “As a parent, it is overwhelming to get a cancer diagnosis,” he says. “The Purple Drug Guide gives families the ability to make educated decisions quickly and accurately about the treatments prescribed to their children.” More than 10,000 drugs are listed, and that list is growing. The information is pulled with dynamic real-time updates from the same government drug database used by doctors and hospitals around the world. Experimental drugs and clinical trials are also included in the app. Consistency with drug names and price regional fluctuations are common problems for cancer patients. This app simplifies getting accurate information about those issues. “If you are looking for a specific drug, all the names, interactions, prices, as well as medical references are listed so there is a true understanding about all aspects of the drug,” says Anthony. “The app has an incredible crossreference feature so you know all the names that the drug is also known as.”
6 August 2017 |
Photos Courtesy of The Purple Society
The app is simple to use: download “The Purple Drug Guide” from the app store, make an account and immediately begin typing cancer drugs in the easy-to-use search bar. You can save and email drug profiles to a friend or doctor. A recent software update allows users to search by types of cancer if they’re unsure of what drugs are available for their child.
Suzann knows Nitalia would be happy they are continuing her mission. “Every time we help another child, I feel Nitalia radiating through them,” says Suzann. “Nitalia’s legacy lives on through everything that we do with The Purple Society.”
A child is diagnosed with cancer every three-and-a-half minutes. “If we can help take some of the stress out of the information overload parents face when trying to be their child’s advocate, all of the hard work is absolutely worth it. We call it a ‘soul payment,’” says Anthony.

“Best medical facility and staff in the Valley, hands down, in my opinion. Highly recommend them if you need help due to chronic pain.” – Nancy K. “
” – Cindy E. “I’ve been competing in strength athletics since the age of 15 and have been competing at a professional level for the last 5 years. It wasn’t until 2014 that I needed to seek treatment for a patella tendon tear that I received while competing at the Commerce World’s Strongest Man in China. I had only heard about PRP treatments and the great benefits that it could have on one’s injuries - that’s when I found Dr. Lundquist at Active Life Physical Medicine & Pain Center in Avondale, Arizona. To this day, I have received Orthovisc injections to both knees along with PRP. I have also received PRP treatments for muscle tears and other tendon tears that I’ve obtained while competing at World’s Strongest Man. I feel that without Dr. Lundquist knowledge in sports medicine and PRP that I would have had to have surgery. The PRP treatments have played a huge role in keeping me at an elite level. I have and will continue to refer other athletes for their injuries to Dr. Lundquist.” — Jerry Pritchett, 2x World Strongest Man Finalist

The Diane & Bruce Halle Foundation Support New Program at Child Crisis Arizona
The Diane & Bruce Halle Foundation recently provided Child Crisis of Arizona with a $50,000 grant in an effort to support the organization’s expansion of its Early Head Start Program. The program’s new location, 817 N. Country Club Drive in Mesa, serves 112 children up to 3-years-old in center-based and home-based models. Early Head Start is a federally funded, community-based program for low-income families. NEW BREAKTHROUGH METHOD FOR CORRECTING GUM RECESSION!
The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST), invented and patented by John Chao, DDS, MADG, is a scalpel-free, suture-free procedure for correcting gum recession. During the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™, a needle is used to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Through this pinhole, special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue. These tools help expand and slide the gumline to cover the exposed root structure. There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue. Dr. Chang and Dr. Svans were two of the first dentists in Arizona and the United States trained and certified as Pinhole Surgical Technique™ Providers. Dr. Chang is the President of Pinhole Surgical Technique Study Group for Certified Clinicians in Arizona, and regularly communicates with Dr. John Chao for clinical findings and advanced training. HEALTH World Class Smiles Made in Detroit
Does Your 7-Year-Old Really Need Braces? Braces are often a rite of passage for middle school students with overbites or crooked teeth. But the oral problems those braces are solving likely started way back in elementary school – possibly as early as first or second grade. So perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise that the American Association of Orthodontists recommends children make their first visit to an orthodontist no later than age 7. That doesn’t mean they are going to get braces. In fact, it’s pretty unusual to put braces on a child that young. But with those early visits, the orthodontist might be able to head off problems before they get worse. Here are a few of the things an orthodontist would be checking with your child:
Are the jaws growing properly? You would think the upper jaw and the lower jaw grow pretty much in tandem, but you would be wrong. The upper jaw stops growing around age eight while the lower jaw keeps on growing like the rest of the body. That means orthodontists can spot problems with the upper jaw earlier and recommend treatment if it’s needed. Is there enough room for the teeth to grow in? Sometimes permanent teeth don’t have enough room to grow in properly, possibly because a baby tooth is in the way. Generally, baby teeth fall out on their own, but occasionally a stubborn one needs to be pulled so that the permanent tooth doesn’t start growing in an awkward direction and become impacted. Removing a misbehaving baby tooth is often the simplest and best solution to a problem that could become much bigger.
Are there too few or too many teeth? One of the things an orthodontist would do when examining a young child is to make sure the correct number of permanent teeth are forming. Extra teeth can be removed, but if a child is a tooth or two short the orthodontist will wait until all the permanent teeth are in before starting any treatment.
Does the child snore? Snoring is a potential sign of sleep apnea, a condition in which a person stops breathing while a 30

person stops breathing while sleeping. It can cause serious health problems and has been diagnosed in children as early as 4 or 5 years old. One common and treatable type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea, in which the airways become partially or completely blocked by the tongue or fatty tissues of the throat. An orthodontist can widen the child’s palate so the upper jaw expands, and that expands the nasal passages. It also provides more room for the tongue so it rests on the roof of the mouth and not the bottom. Usually, orthodontists offer complimentary exams so it really is a good idea to have your child checked out by an orthodontist at age 7. The odds are that no treatment will be necessary. But if problems are starting to develop, early detection could make a big difference.
Women at Greater Risk for UI By MS
While urinary incontinence often referred to as "UI," can affect anyone, the risk of developing the condition is higher among women than men. Understanding UI can help women better cope with this often-embarrassing condition. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases defines UI as a loss of bladder control resulting in the accidental loss of urine. Three sets of muscles work in concert to keep urine in the bladder. The internal sphincter, the external sphincter and pelvic floor muscles support, contract and relax to help empty the bladder at the right times. This process is compromised in people with UI. UI can occur in various forms. Stress incontinence is when a small amount of urine escapes while coughing or jogging. Urgency incontinence is the feeling of having to go but not being able to make it to the bathroom in time. Many women experience both types of UI.
Causes of UI UI may be caused by a weakening of the pelvic muscles and urethra, or the tube that connects the bladder to the outside of the body. If damaged or weakened, these parts of the body may not be strong enough to contract sufficiently to hold urine when stress is placed on them. The Mayo Clinic offers that age, childbirth, pregnancy, menopause, injury, or prior surgery have all been linked UI. Neurological disorders, such as stroke, Parkinson's disease and a spinal injury, also may cause UI.
Treating UI A number of treatments can alleviate UI. Kegel exercises that strengthen pelvic floor muscles may help. When done right, these exercises make participants feel as though they are trying to stop the flow of urine or attempting not to pass gas. Losing weight also may help alleviate symptoms of UI if excess weight is putting pressure on the bladder. Devices, such as pessaries or special tampon-type inserts, can push up against the wall of the vagina and urethra to help reduce stress leakage. Surgery and medications may be necessary if other methods do not help. azhealthandliving.com |

SPIRIT
By Dr. Sherrie Campbell, author of Loving Yourself: The Mastery of Being Your Own Person
The 10 Understated Qualities of Beauty There is no doubt that there is great value assigned to external beauty. For some, how they look physically is simply an expression and celebration of their internal beauty, but often those who are physically attractive are emotionally unattractive. To be beautiful inside and out, you must possess more than a pretty shell. Here are 10 understated qualities of beauty:
Elegance: Elegance is that dignified grace about your appearance, movement, personal style or behavior. To be elegant is to be strong and assured in who you are and to move gently within that energy.
Kindness: The kindness of your spirit, how you treat, think about, and speak to others comes from a genuine and sensitive place. You are kind, even to those whom you do not care for. You are aware that you can love someone even if you do not like them. Being kind may be perceived as weakness or vulnerability by others, but you know that kindness is one of your strongest influences. If you can’t say something nice, you have the control to remain quiet.
Composure: Composure is the beauty of self-control. Life is always going to bring its challenges. Without a sense of composure, it is easy to allow conflict-situations and relationships to unnerve you, but when you have composure, you understand the concept of less equals more. The less you react, defend, explain, become fearful or controlling the more command you have over a situation. Having composure allows you to stand tall with grace in the face of loss, challenge and not to be overly boastful when it comes to your success.
Courage: Be willing to dare greatly in your life. It takes courage to love fully, to change yourself when necessary, to feel deeply, to leave love when it’s scary, and to chase your dreams with passion and an unwavering tenacity. Confident: When you are self-loving, you naturally possess a quiet confidence. Your self-awareness, dedication to self-development and personal growth provides you the knowledge to succeed at nearly anything you seek.
Deliberate: You are clear and persistent about who you are, 32 August 2017| azhealthandliving.com
where you are headed in life and what you want from your relationships to be happy. In being deliberate, people know where they stand with you. You get what you want in life because you are clear in saying what you want. You use each challenge life brings to positively refine yourself. This refinement keeps your life clean of negativity. Being deliberate keeps you pointed in the direction of your dreams, connected to your true loves and to living genuinely as who you are. In being deliberate your life is not set up on pretenses. Who you are does not change from person to person or situation to situation.
Intelligent: Intelligence is about knowledge, but even more so about emotions. In being aware of your emotional patterns, you are endowed with the flexibility to handle challenge and change, allowing you to unlock smart solutions to your problems.
Humble: Life isn’t all about you, in fact, you prefer to celebrate the accomplishments of others as much as your own. You are proud of who you are but have no need to add histrionics to your success. Most of the time you prefer being in the background, working hard, and allowing your success speak for itself. You are sensitive and want the best for everyone. You do not see yourself above others, as you are secure enough in yourself that the trap of comparison doesn’t interest you. You enjoy your life for what it is and do not feel entitled to more without the commensurate work to back it up.
Honest: People gravitate toward what is real. You are simple, upfront, gentle, but direct in the ‘being’ of who you are. You are content to live life patiently and know how to wait well. For you, life is about being authentic and following your heart and nothing else. You are someone others can depend upon, as you have no ulterior motives. You are relationship oriented not agenda oriented. You believe the truth is the only path to success and deep intimacy.
Loving: There is nothing more appealing to others than to be in the presence of a loving person. When you love yourself, you have endless love to give. For you love is a verb and it is expresses itself through loving kindness, touch, your smile, and sense of inner joy and vitality. You are warm toward others and kind to yourself. There is nothing you wouldn’t do to help and this loving approach is taken into every area of your life from career to parenting. Further, you apply love as a form of discipline and setting boundaries when necessary. There are times when the only way another can learn and grow is for you either to withdrawal your love, or to set boundaries around it, in an effort to protect your generous nature. Love is not just a gentle emotion it is also firm. You know that in order for you to remain loving you must protect your heart and put yourself first in negative situations. Through life’s experiences, you have come to learn that some people can stay in your heart, but not in your life. To be truly beautiful, it is these understated qualities of beauty, which are sustaining. To possess any of these will increase your beauty exponentially. Who you are internally is the marker of your impact on the world. Let the kindness of your character say more about you than what you see in the mirror. azhealthandliving.com |

common causes of hearing loss. It typically affects your hearing in the higher pitches first, but over time the hearing loss can progress and begin to affect lower pitches. A common report of patients with presbycusis is that they can hear people, but that they just can’t understand what was said. And although hearing loss is more common as you age, no degree of hearing loss at any age is ever “normal.”
It’s estimated that about one third of adults over the age of 65 suffer from hearing loss, leaving two thirds of adults in the same age range with normal hearing. It is not well known why the auditory systems of some individuals are affected by aging while others are not, but it can often be genetic and run in families. The effects of noise exposure also add up over time and can contribute to hearing loss in later life. This type of hearing loss is usually permanent, and is best treated by amplification with hearing aids. The average person waits about 7 years after their initial diagnosis with hearing loss to decide to do something about it – but sooner you treat your hearing loss, the better your results with hearing aids will be. If you’re having difficulty understanding what others say to you, or find yourself asking for frequent repetition, see an audiologist.

bad about “restless legs”? Restless Leg Syndrome is in a class of conditions known as movement disorders, the same classification as Parkinson’s disease. Furthermore, “restlessness” doesn’t accurately describe what the patient suffering from this condition actually feels.
Patients describe an odd feeling in their legs, especially at night. The sensation is so distressing they feel compelled to move their legs, thus the name restless leg syndrome. And moving their legs is what they do, all night long! Restful sleep becomes impossible.
a break in the skin that doesn’t heal properly. A venous ulcer occurs when blood doesn’t flow back toward the heart as it should. This creates venous insufficiency and poor circulation. The pressure inside the veins increases. Due to that high pressure, knocking into your skin can cause it to break and lead to ulcers. These ulcers usually occur on the lower legs between the ankles and knees.

doctor that something is all right and leave it alone. The truth is that a lump could turn into a bigger problem.
A sebaceous cyst is a sac like structure just under the skin that contains a cheese like material called sebum. These cysts can be infected easily and without warning, which can then lead to cellulitis, a serious skin infection that can spread quickly. In a diabetic for example, this simple infection could be disastrous. A sebaceous cyst will never go away without surgical removal of the sac. A cyst can be drained, but the sac will remain and can fill up again, and become infected. Once a sebaceous cyst is removed, it will never come back. A lipoma is a benign soft tissue tumor made up of body fat. They are the most common of soft tissue tumors, and can occur on any skin surface area. As lipomas increase in size though, there have been cases in which malignant (cancerous) transformation has occurred. Approximately 1 percent of the population has a lipoma, and they can occur at any age but most often in age ranges of 40-60 years old. The possibility of a lipoma undergoing a malignant change to a liposarcoma is why most tumors should be removed. The definitive characteristics of a lump are not fully known until it is removed and examined under a microscope.
available to you. Replacing that missing tooth is the best long-term solution, and one option to consider is a dental implant. Implants have been in use for a long time, are very durable, and have a high rate of success – as much as 98%. The implant itself acts as the root for the new tooth and helps preserve bone.
Implants can improve your appearance, as they are designed to match your own teeth. Implants also eliminate the problems associated with dentures. They function much as your own teeth would do, allowing you to chew more easily and to speak without fear of dentures moving and causing your words to slur. If you already have a denture, adding implants placed with attachments can make that denture more secure in your mouth. The first step is to schedule an exam with a dentist familiar with implant dentistry, who will discuss with you all aspects of the procedure. Should you decide to move forward, the dentist will first place the implant, a titanium post, in the jaw bone. This will heal in three to six months, and then the dentist will take impressions to send to a dental lab to create the crown for your new tooth. Once the crown is ready, the dentist will place a connecting post called an abutment on the implant and attach the lab-created crown to that abutment. Most patients report little or no discomfort with the implant procedures. The information contained in this article is not intended to be a substitute for professional dental or medical advice, diagnosis, care, or treatment. for restful nights, to awaken easily, and be functional throughout the day without needing a nap. The anxiety and stress of our busy world certainly make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. However, those dreams of being rested are even more difficult to achieve when nights are fraught with the tossing, turning, snoring, choking, or gasping for breath of oneself or a bed partner. Millions are disturbed throughout the night by sleep-disordered breathing caused by airway obstruction. Sleep-disordered breathing is a serious health problem, and initially appears as snoring. Although snoring is generally viewed as a minor annoyance, it can be the first sign of a problem with a range of severity. Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) is marked by a greater loss of airway patency than snoring. Those who suffer from UARS are generally young, female and may experience gastroesophageal reflux disorder, asthma, depression and hormonal imbalances. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a serious and often life-threatening problem when sleepers stop breathing for 10 seconds or more (apnea), or breathe at a decreased rate and depth (hypopnea). Choking, gasping for breath, and long periods without breathing are all signs of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Snoring, UARS, and OSA are all serious conditions that should not be ignored. Not only do they affect sleep, they are detrimental to an individual’s health. –Dr. Croft Vistancia Orthodontics 623.566.0800 azhealthandliving.com | August 2017

Q. What is the role of DaTscan imaging for patients with Parkinsonian syndromes? A. Parkinsonian syndromes (PSs) encompass
a variety of disorders that are grouped together based on their shared clinical features. The most common is Parkinson’s disease which affects an estimated 1 million Americans. PSs are characterized by common motor symptoms—tremors (a form of rhythmic shaking); rigidity (stiffness and inflexibility of the limbs, neck and trunk); bradykinesia (slowness of movement) and postural instability (impaired balance and coordination). Parkinsonian syndromes may occur when the brain does not produce enough dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate movement. There may also be a decrease of dopamine transporters, known as DaT, which mediate uptake of dopamine and may affect how dopamine functions in the brain. Until recently, a correct diagnosis for patients with a suspected PS could take years. The results were often inconclusive because early in the disease process it may be difficult to differentiate symptoms caused by a PS or essential tremor. Even though the symptoms are similar amongst these disorders, they require very different treatments. In 2011, the FDA approved the first diagnostic imaging agent called DaTscan for dopamine transporter visualization. DaT scan is performed by single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging using a radiopharmaceutical that binds to DaT proteins. DaTscan along with other diagnostic tests and clinical evaluation may help decrease uncertainty and lead to more accurate diagnosis for optimal patient management. – Dr. Frouge Valley Radiologists 623.847.2000
Q. What are the risks, benefits and alternatives of pain medications?
Q. How do I have a restful and refreshing vacation?
Q. What can I do to improve my backside?
A. There has been a recent increase in awareness concerning the opioid dependence epidemic. The surgeon general recently sent all providers a letter about the importance of following guidelines. Since 1999, opioid overdose deaths have quadrupled. Yes, addiction is a problem and patients must be monitored, but more commonly are side effects. The side effects of opioids may include drowsiness, fatigue, disturbance in quality sleep, “Brain fog”, hyperalgesic state, increased inflammation, sexual dysfunction, loss of libido, decreased testosterone, decreased white and gray matter in the brain, memory loss, slurred speech, depression, anxiety, increased risk of suicide, respiratory depression, slowed heart rate and low falling blood pressure, heart attack, osteoporosis, compression fractures, loss of teeth, nausea, vomiting, constipation and weakened immune system. It’s quite scary but necessary for patients to review these risks.
A. Traveling by air today is stressful. Have
A. It appears that the media and certain celebrities have brought to light the accentuation of a particular part of the anatomy, the backside. Augmentation of the buttocks is no longer just for increasing size, and certainly not just for the rich and famous.
Some pain medications are less likely to result in these risks and should be considered if medications are necessary. So what are the benefits? Reduced pain leads to increase function. This prevents the sequalae of immobility, which are numerous (blood clots, weight gain, cardiovascular issues and ulcers). You are now probably wondering, what are my alternatives? This is the big question. The alternatives are extensive and will depend on the pain generator. In my practice, we emphasize treating the source of the pain. Sometimes it is arthritis, disc problems, nerve, poor nutrition or lack of “chi” in the body. The treatment plan will depend on the pain generator and/or underlying problem.

an emergency healthy snack with you and keep hydrated, your favorite music on your cell phone is nice or a relaxed flight or road trip. There are several things that you can do even if the hotel you booked or the relatives you are visiting offer you a not so wonderful hide- a- bed. Plan ahead for a trip; don’t try and do laundry, pack and go to bed late the night before. Wear comfortable travel clothes that are easy care and non-wrinkling. If you are at one place for several days, unpack and hang clothes. When you book your room, ask for a quiet one, not near the elevator or ice machine. Upon arrival at the room, set the temperature to what you are used to at home. A cool, dark room preferably in the upper 60’s is best. Hang out your do not disturb sign and make sure the blackout blinds are in place. Maintain the same sleep schedule as much as possible, don’t eat too late, avoid spicy foods and caffeine, get exercise and fresh air, turn off TV and other devices except soothing music, bring your favorite scent, take a relaxing bath and pray. I just returned from a vacation in Alaska and was amazed how much the sleep wristband on my right arm helped me get a good night’s refreshing sleep even with the sun shining most of the night and the unfamiliar beds and sounds. – Donna Swartz www.sleepimproved.com 602.618.0882
As the decades tick away combined with other factors for females, such as hormonal changes and busy lifestyles, it becomes almost impossible to have that twenty-something booty. Many women are looking for is a little lift to feel better in clothing or swim wear. Well now there are options for that perfect contour and lift in just the right places. Skin tightening and added volume to the upper and upper lateral aspects of the backside will give the female form a more youthful contoured appearance. Often multiple modalities are required but (no pun intended), the results are fabulous. These in-office procedures include lifting and tightening skin and connective tissue with Ultherapy (Focused Ultrasound), breaking up and filling cellulite pockets and adding volume with injectable Sculptra Aesthetic (Poly-L-Lactic Acid) and topping off with PDO threads for additional skin lift, smoothing and collagen production. When performed appropriately and in combination one can achieve a more youthfully contoured attractive butt with no surgery or down time. Multiple treatments are required so starting now is beneficial for those holiday events and wardrobe. Results are long lasting with annual maintenance.

A. Unfortunately, there are some obstacles to proper nutrition. If someone in your life seems to be unintentionally losing weight, or has lost interest in food, there are several things to consider. Some of the most common obstacles to good nutrition include mouth sores/pain, tooth loss, gum disease and ill-fitting dentures. A trip to the dentist may be needed. Some diseases, like Parkinson’s, cause difficulty chewing or swallowing, and some medical treatments and medications can cause a loss of appetite as well. Discuss the possibilities with your doctor and ask for possible solutions. Isolation and loneliness can lead to a loss of appetite or cause a lack of interest in preparing nutritious meals. It may be helpful to have someone help prepare meals or have homebound meal delivery service. For some, transportation issues make it difficult to shop for groceries. Not everyone is willing to ask for help or knows about services available when they are needed. Uncovering the reason behind the nutritional deficiency is the key to resolving the issue. Sun Cities CareGivers can assist with shopping and meal preparation and we can connect our clients with other resources they may need as well. E PRESENT
PARENTING By Dr. Matt McCarty, CEO and founder of Genotox Laboratories, www.genotoxlabs.com
Is My Teen Using Drugs? Can I Know For Sure? Prescription drugs, especially opioids, are a growing threat to the health of young people, with 6 percent of teens 12 to 17 saying they use the drugs for nonmedical reasons. And in 2014, prescription drugs caused the overdose death of 1,741 young people ages 18 to 25, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. If those statistics aren’t alarming enough, studies reveal that 3 percent of teens have used heroin and that drug’s use is on the rise. In 2009, 21,000 teens sought treatment for heroin addiction, compared to 4,400 10 years earlier, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. So how can parents concerned their teen might be using opioids or other drugs find out for sure? Some parents seek to confirm their suspicions with one of the many drug-testing kits available at the corner pharmacy. But clever teens and free-market ingenuity are making the accuracy of those urine drug tests questionable. In fact, the urine drug test cheating industry is estimated to be near $1 billion, with products easily purchased on the web, including synthetic urine, substitute urine, and even devices aimed solely at defeating the drug test. Unfortunately, there’s a whole industry of products out there that help people cheat the drug tests. Even if you decide to make your child use a urine test, savvy teenagers know that once you send them into the restroom alone they can substitute a friend’s urine or synthetic urine and trick you. The challenge for parents is to confirm that their handy drug-testing kit really is testing their teen’s urine and not someone else’s. They aren’t the only ones who face that predicament. Drug-test cheating is a problem that human resource departments, law enforcement and other agencies or businesses that test for drugs encounter as well. Cheating the tests also is a problem when monitoring patients who are taking opioid medications under a doctor’s care, or who are undergoing rehab and recovery from addiction. But there are ways to foil the cheaters. Genotox Labs, for example, developed a product called ToxProtect™ that adds a cheek swab to the urine-collection process so the DNA can be matched. With a DNA test, there’s no maybe about it. It either matches or it doesn’t match. .
August 2017 |
What might lead a parent to insist on a drug test for their teen? The National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence says there are drug-abuse warning signs parents can look for, they include:
Physical and health signs. Bloodshot eyes; pupils smaller or larger than normal; frequent nosebleeds; changes in appetite or sleep patterns; sudden weight loss or weight gain; deterioration in personal grooming or physical appearance; and impaired or unstable coordination. Behavioral signs. Skipping class and declining grades; loss of interest in extracurricular activities, acting isolated, silent or withdrawn; demands more privacy and avoiding eye contact; and sudden change in relationships and friends.
Psychological warning signs. Sudden mood changes, irritability, angry outbursts or laughing at nothing; periods of unusual hyperactivity or agitation; lack of motivation and inability to focus, appearing fearful, withdrawn, anxious, or paranoid for no apparent reason. While schools and other agencies may provide some help, ultimately it’s up to the parents to address a teen’s drug problem. All evidence suggests that preventing drug abuse starts at home.
Finding Balance with Extracurricular Activities
By MS
Extracurricular activities teach students important life lessons, provide them opportunities to socialize and often stimulate their minds and bodies in ways that differ from the stimulation provided in the classroom. Students who participate in extracurricular activities may want to limit their participation to 20 hours per week. This is according to a group of professors from Stanford University and Villanova University who have been collecting data on the issue since 2007. In their report "Extracurricular Activity in High-Performing School Contexts: Stress Buster, Booster or Buffer?," Jerusha Conner and Sarah Miles found that 87 percent of kids who would be considered to have packed schedules were perfectly happy unless they were doing more than four hours a day. The "overscheduling hypothesis" may be overhyped. This is the concern that too much organized activity participation leads to poor developmental outcomes. This hypothesis also suggests that hectic schedules also undermine family functioning, detract from schoolwork, and possibly increase the risk of copycat behaviors and excessive competitiveness. However, in the study "The Over-Scheduling Hypothesis Revisited: Intensity of Organized Activity Participation During Adolescence and Young Adult Outcomes," researchers J.L. Mahoney and Andrea Vest determined that, controlling for demographic factors and baseline adjustment, extracurricular intensity was a significant predictor of positive outcomes and unrelated to indicators of problematic adjustment (e.g., psychological distress, substance use, antisocial behavior) at young adulthood. Even though extracurricular activities are largely positive even when schedules are packed - parents need to be aware of the diminishing returns of too many activities. This is something called the "threshold effect." Benefits from extracurriculars can level off when too many activities are being juggled. If a child is experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness or depression, or seems overly stressed, it could be time to reduce students' time spent doing structured activities. It's essential that families use the cues given by kids to assess what students can handle. And children should be encouraged to be honest with their parents about their extracurricular activities as well. azhealthandliving.com |

Five Reasons You Should Include Prunes in Your Diet The public has certainly heard of prunes, but most people do not eat them on a regular basis. Prunes are traditionally the go-to food for a person who has digestive issues and needs help with constipation. Their reputation as a laxative has created somewhat of a negative image of prunes, but learning about the many health benefits of eating prunes could change the public perception of this fruit. Prunes, also known as dried plums, are among the healthiest foods a person can eat. Not only do they have benefits for the gastrointestinal system, they are high in antioxidants, may help prevent premature aging, and can promote cardiovascular health. The plum is related to the peach, cherry, nectarine, apricot and almond. The Japanese plum is the most commonly eaten fresh plum, while the European plum is the one traditionally dried to turn into prunes. Plums have been eaten for centuries, and in Chinese mythology, the plum tree is associated with great age and wisdom. Plums are one of the most widely cultivated fruits. Prunes are usually made by dehydrating the fruit quickly with the use of natural gas heat in dehydrating tunnels. Essentially, heating elements and fans are used to force hot air through plum-filled tunnels. At this point prunes can be stored or processed further for packaging. Some prunes are processed with potassium sorbate, which is a preservative that improves the shelf life of packaged prunes. Prunes also are generally washed and steamed to return some of the moisture to the fruit. Other prunes are hot-packed so they are processed without any preservatives. What makes prunes (and plums) nutritional powerhouses is that they are very high in antioxidants, substances that help fight free radicals in the body that contribute to illness. According to researchers from Tufts University in Boston, prunes rank No. 1 in terms of antioxidant capacity. It was found that prunes had more than twice the antioxidant capacity of other superfoods, like blueberries and raisins. Dried plums also rank above fresh plums in having a greater capacity of antioxidant power. Prunes contain high levels of hydrocinnamic acids (phenol compounds), which give them their antioxidant boost. 46 August 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
Prunes are very high in dietary fiber, containing between 6 to 7 grams. As many know, dietary fiber is the part of plant foods that the stomach and intestinal enzymes cannot absorb into the bloodstream. Fiber will remain in the colon and absorb water, which helps soften the stool before it is passed. Prunes also contain sorbitol, which is a mild colon stimulant. This will help speed up the passage of stool and reduce the risk of constipation and hemorrhoids, and may reduce risk of colorectal cancer. Individuals may not be aware that prunes also contain high amounts of polyphenols, which are known to restore bone mass and structure, according to Heal With Food. Therefore, dried plums are part of osteoporosis prevention treatment for postmenopausal women. Various studies have indicated prunes may have beneficial effects on bone mineral density, bone formation activity and the production of boron, which is thought to play a role in the prevention of osteoporosis. Prunes also may help prevent certain types of cancers. According to the American Cancer Society, foods high in fiber and vitamin A may offer some protection against cancers of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts as well as cancers induced by chemicals. The phytonutrients in plums also can inhibit in-vitro breast cancer growth without adversely affecting normal cell growth.
Benefits to Bicycle Riding By MS
Bicycle riding has many benefits, including promoting health. It's also an eco-conscious mode of transportation. Who relies on a bike as a primary mode of transportation varies, but millions of people worldwide take to bicycles for different purposes. Here are a few of the many benefits of taking to the streets atop your bicycle.
It's Green. Bicycles have virtually no carbon footprint. This method of transportation is one of the most efficient ever invented. It contributes to little air pollution, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, reduces road wear, and can even reduce deforestation of planting of rubber plantations and biofuel crops. Bicycles also make virtually no noise, so they're ideal for those who want to prevent noise pollution. It's Healthy. Riding a bicycle is a great start to implementing a healthier lifestyle. Going bike riding puts less stress on the joints than running. It is also a faster mode of transport than walking. Many people find that riding a bicycle can be a mood-booster. Regular cycling is known to have many health benefits, including toning muscles, improving cardiovascular health, improving bone mass, and helping to burn calories, which can shed pounds. NutriStrategy, a nutrition and fitness organization, says that a 130-pound person will burn 236 calories per hour while leisurely cycling, 472 calories for moderately paced cycling and 708 calories per hour for race cycling. A 180-pound person will burn 327 calories for leisurely cycling, 654 for moderately paced cycling, and 981 for race cycling. It Saves Space. Bicycles take up less space than other modes
of transport. That means everyone from apartment-dwellers to owners of large homes have the space to store a bicycle. In terms of parking, a bicycle or keeping it chained somewhere, the smaller profile means they can be kept in many places, and there's no need to hunt for a parking spot. Furthermore, bicycles on roadways also take up less space, which can reduce the amount of traffic congestion. Additionally, should a traffic jam form, it's easier to change routes on a bicycle than it is in an automobile. azhealthandliving.com | August 2017

Is Your Closet a River or the Dead Sea?
That gorgeous jacket hidden deep in your closet is stunning. Too bad it went out of fashion in 1997 – much like dozens of other dresses, skirts, blouses and pants that cause the clothes rod to sag, but haven’t been worn in years. Your closet is supposed to be a river, not the Dead Sea. Clothes should flow through a closet the way water passes through a stream – there for a time, then gone. Clothes shouldn’t be held in captivity forever. Both women and men add tons of clothing, shoes and accessories to their closets, but they never seem to get rid of anything. An overly extensive wardrobe actually can hinder your lifestyle. Just to get dressed in the morning you may have to rummage past apparel that should have been tossed years ago. Here are a few tips for making that closet a more inviting and organized place:
Use it or lose it Nothing should be in your closet that you can’t wear right now. That means anything that doesn’t fit, is in need of repair or is out of season, shouldn’t be taking up space. If you have extra closet space, move the out-of-season clothing there. If you plan to lose weight, do the same with clothes that don’t fit. Mostly, though, donate or toss the excess. Be brutal in deciding what to keep and what to get rid of.
Organize your collection Once the clutter is gone, it’s time to organize what remains. Dressier clothes should hang toward the back of the closet unless you wear them often. Types of garments – skirts, pants, tops – should be grouped together and organized from casual to dressy.
Customize your closet 48 August 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
Builders mostly build generic closets, using standard measures for clothing racks and shelves. People then just use whatever space is there, whether it works for them or not. Beatty and White suggest that instead of working with that generic layout, you should make your closet work with your wardrobe. That could mean bringing in more storage for shoes, or deciding whether you need more or less hanging space than what’s available.
Once you’re done organizing, you aren’t really done. You can’t expect to stay organized if you don’t regularly tidy up. Make sure you hang clothes back up after you wear them, or put them in the hamper if they need to be washed. Put clean laundry away promptly. If you aren’t careful, your closet will be a quagmire again.
A2M – A NonSurgical “Cure” for Osteoarthritis and Inflammation is Here!
Wouldn’t it be great to wake up in the mornings without stiffness and pain in your arthritic joints? Or to take your dog for a long walk without worrying about “paying for it” the next day? Now, imagine being able to have like new joints – without replacement surgery. This is the promise of a protein molecule called Alpha-2-Macroglobulin, more commonly referred to as A2M. A2M is a recently discovered compound that arrests the degradation of the cartilage caused by osteoarthritis (OA) and protects the joint.

Kate Beckinsale A versatile star
The daughter of two English actors (Richard Beckinsale and Judy Loe), it seems like actress Kate Beckinsale was born to be a star. While she has been in the entertainment industry since childhood, Beckinsale is perhaps best known in the States for her roles in fastmoving films like the popular “Underworld” series where she plays lead character Selene and other films like “Van Helsing,” “Contraband” and “Total Recall.” While she’s comfortable in action films, Beckinsale is a versatile actress and has also appeared in dramatic pieces, including “Everybody’s Fine,” “Nothing but the Truth,” and “Love & Friendship.” “Beckinsale, the daughter of an actress and an actor (her father was a well-known star of British comedies who died of a heart attack when he was just 31 and she was just five), has been performing professionally for 25 years now,” cites an article in The Hollywood Reporter. “She landed her first parts while still a student at Oxford University, mostly in British periodpiece productions adapted from great works, like Kenneth Branagh’s 1993 film version of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ and the 1996 TV movie version of ‘Emma.’ She accompanied boyfriend Sheen to New York when he landed a part on Broadway and soon began working there herself.” Beckinsale shared with The Hollywood Reporter that her career in Hollywood (where she moved in the 90s) and her becoming a mom happened around the same time. 50 August 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
"I was so busy having my baby and juggling nine movies that I didn't ever sit there and think, 'Right, I need to have a persona and a niche, and I'm going to create that,'" she told the magazine. "I didn't do that. I think other people do that and I think that's really smart. They decide, 'What am I and what am I gonna market myself as?' I just kind of blew along. And what happens is, I think, other people then decide your persona for you, and I didn't realize that until I was knee-deep into the persona." To her fans, perhaps what stands out most about Beckinsale is her flexibility as an actress. “But despite carving out a lucrative career for herself in superhero movies, she says she would prefer to be recognized for her versatility,” cites the Daily Mail. This month, Beckinsale stars in “The Only Living Boy in New York,” which debuts in theaters August 11 and features Beckinsale in a more serious role. According to multiple sources, including Deadline Hollywood, Beckinsale is currently working on a new project called “The Chocolate Money.” Deadline Hollywood notes that Beckinsale is co-writing the script for the film. She is also reported to be working on the sixth installment in the “Underworld” franchise. Added to her work as an actress, Beckinsale has modeled internationally as well. In addition to her work, Beckinsale is known for giving back to charities in England and the U.S. She is a big supporter of the British Heart Foundation and has supported causes such as children’s literacy, Habitat for Humanity and more. In 2008, she supported the Women’s Cancer Research Institute by hosting a gala. "It is a pleasure and a privilege to be part of such an important cause," she told InStyle. She also has quite a following on social media, with more than 1 million followers on Instagram. EXCEL & ACHIEVE
CAREER, BUSINESS & FINANCE By Dan Carter, an Investment Advisor Representative for Safeguard Investment Advisory Group, www.safeguardinvestment.com
Three Tips for Staying On the Same Financial Page with Your Spouse Plenty of things can kill the romance in a relationship. But traditionally, money and all the complications that come with it sit near the top of the list. There’s no doubt that when the numbers in the bank account start dropping, the tempers can start flaring. Money can cause a lot of problems in a marriage. When the wolves are at the door, couples stress, argue and often break up. In fact, 20 percent of couples say that financial decisions cause tension in their relationships every day, and 31 percent say money issues lead to stress weekly, according to a survey by the American Institute of CPAs and the Ad Council. The key is for couples to get on the same page about money. Tensions can’t help but grow if one spouse is extraordinarily frugal while the other is a spendthrift. Here are a few suggestions:
Sit down and talk about what is important If a husband’s financial goals and a wife’s financial goals are at odds, trouble is inevitable. He might want to stash more away for retirement. Her chief concern might be saving enough to help the kids through college. The important thing is that each understands the others priorities and concerns, and then they can work from there.
Understand that there must be a balance Some couples spend recklessly, racking up massive creditcard debt, while others go to the opposite extreme, fearful of parting with money for anything other than basic necessities. Be disciplined, but treat yourselves occasionally. An occasional splurge isn’t a bad thing. Couples can benefit from a dinner at a nice restaurant or a weekend trip to the beach. The problem is when splurging becomes the norm. But life shouldn’t just be one dreary chore after another. You do need to live a little. 56 August 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
Ignore the Joneses Let your neighbors, relatives and co-workers do what they do, buying unnecessarily expensive cars, living in houses they can’t afford and traveling to exotic destinations that are really outside their budgets. Enjoy life, but live within your means. There are plenty of sayings about money, like ‘money can’t buy you love’ and ‘the love of money is the root of all evil. Those sayings may contain a little truth, but money also can be a useful tool, a very positive thing. If you use it wisely, it can enhance your life and your loved ones’ lives, too.

Protecting Skin as it Ages Just as the body changes with age, so do the needs of the skin. While acne and breakouts may have been the bane of existence as an adolescent, wrinkles and dark spots are concerns as we age. The U.S. National Library of Medicine says that skin changes are one of the most noticeable signs of aging. Sagging skin and wrinkles are two of the more common problems men and women encounter as they age. As people get older, connective tissues in the skin that promote strength and elasticity have a tendency of breaking down. Furthermore, the blood vessels of the dermis become more fragile, which can lead to bruising. Also, sebaceous glands may produce less oil, making the skin less able to moisturize itself. As a result, the skin thins out. It is important to note these changes so that people can be proactive in their approach to skincare as they age. There are certain strategies to put in place that can make the difference in the appearance and health of the skin. While none of these are the magic "fountain of youth," they go a long way to promoting a more youthful appearance.
Address dryness. If the skin is itchy or uncomfortable, or if you find that there is extra flaking, lack of moisture could be a problem. Moisturizer should be the staple of a skincare regimen. Experiment with moisturizers until you find the one that is the best match for your skin.
Use sun protection. The sun is one of the single biggest contributors to unhealthy skin and premature signs of aging. Always wear sun protection products when going out in the sun, even on overcast days.
Don't tug or be rough on the skin. The skin becomes more delicate and prone to injury as a person ages. Therefore, unnecessary roughness while washing and drying can break capillaries or mar the skin in other ways. Be delicate, using cotton to wipe away makeup and avoid cleansers that have rough excoriators or other substances that can be rough on the skin.
Revise makeup shades and products as needed. As skincare needs change, it pays to go with the flow in terms of 60 August 2017

the products you use and buy. What may have been flattering a few years ago may not be flattering now. Think about neutral or rosy shades in the types of foundations and blushers you select. Avoid anything that is too dramatic or drastic.
Drink plenty of water. Dehydration can increase the risk of injury with regards to the skin, making it more susceptible to dryness and other issues. Be sure to always stay hydrated by consuming enough water to ward off feelings of thirst.
Experiment with a facial. Facials can help promote blood flow to the skin and improve the appearance of youth and vitality. In addition, a facial massage can feel invigorating. Check with a spa near you to see if they offer facial services. Talk with the staff about your skincare needs and ask for recommendations on the products that may work for you.
Moving is the best medicine. Keeping active and losing weight are just two of the ways that you can fight osteoarthritis pain. In fact, for every pound you lose, that’s four pounds less pressure on each knee. For information on managing pain, go to fightarthritispain.org.

Move It or Lose It: 5 Moves to Put Seniors Back in the Game For Americans 65 and older, falling down can be the worst thing to happen to them. According to statistics from the National Council on Aging: • One in three seniors experiences a significant fall each year. • Every 18 seconds, a senior is admitted into an emergency room after losing balance and hitting the ground. • Every 35 minutes, an elderly person dies from a fall – the leading cause of death for seniors. Seniors of all ages need to work on improving their balance, coordination, strength, vision and cognitive skills. When these are improved, they are less likely to fall – and more able to enjoy life. A fun, social program of games and activities that include exercises specifically designed for seniors helps them address multiple issues, including those that tend to keep them sedentary – which only lessen their strength and balance. Here are a few suggested moves, which address many different areas of the body:
floor; or for more difficulty, maintain the toes a few inches off the floor. Repeat this move with your left arm and right foot. Hold each pose for several seconds, and increase holding time.
Sensory integration – the arrow chart: Look at an arrow chart, call out the direction indicated by each individual symbol then thrust your arms in that direction. In other words, say and do what the arrow indicates. For an additional challenge, do the opposite of what the arrow indicates.
The cross-crawl: After various light warm-ups, begin with the basic cross-crawl, which focuses on the fundamentals of balance. March in place, lifting the knees high. At the same time, reach across and touch the lifted knee with the opposite hand or elbow; alternate and keep going. This can be done sitting, standing, or lying down. Once any of these exercises are mastered, participants should continue to challenge themselves. For even greater balance work, and to exercise the vestibular system, close your eyes and count backwards from 100 by threes. It’s not fun if you’re not conquering a challenge.

Alternate crossing the foot in front and then behind the other foot as you move along; repeat several times, then do the same with opposite feet. As a bonus challenge, try a reading exercise from a vision card, designed for stimulating the brain/visual system, while sidestepping.
