"I did my research online for the practices in Arizona that offer varicose vein removal. I knew I wanted the EVLT treatment and wanted the procedure done by a Physician, not a cosmetic place. I narrowed it down to three Physicians and chose Dr. Sharma for his experience. I could not be more pleased with my experience at Arizona Vein & Laser Institute. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful physician. As he is performing the procedure, he explains what he is doing and is so concerned about making you feel comfortable. As for his staff, I cannot say enough good words. One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that your employees are only as good as you are. Dr. Sharma, you have a wonderful staff which says alot about you as an employer. I spent many office visits with them and every time they were pleasant, caring and professional. I was impressed by the way they worked as a team with Dr. Sharma. Thank you so much!" Joy A.

"I had called your office on a Monday morning to see if I could be fit in for an appointment as soon as possible because of a complication I had over the weekend. Being a new patient and never being seen at your office before it didn't matter because the woman who answered was not only kind, friendly and sypmathetic of my situation, but she was able to fit me in that very same afternoon. I have to say how incredibly impressed I was with the entire staff at this office but even more so with Dr. Sharma and Dr. Hecht. Their bedside manners are second to none. Thank you!" Scott Schrimp

Lift, Tighten and Tone Your Skin this Holiday! We can all agree sagging skin is a sure sign of aging, especially when it’s concentrated around the jaw line, neck and eyes. Now there is a new generation skin-tightening device leading the way in the fight against sagging jowls, turkey necks, and tired eyes. is a non-surgical treatment designed to lift, tighten and firm the skin of the face and neck. It is drastically different in its tightening and lifting ability because it not only tightens skin, but also the deep muscular layers underneath. The same foundational layers typically addressed in a surgical face-lift.
Before
drives sound waves into skin and deeper support structures that tighten existing collagen, and stimulate more collagen growth over the next three to six months. This is the first non-surgical device to combine focused ultrasound energy that visualizes the area to be treated then accurately delivers pinpoint energy to multiple structural layers of collagen. is the first ultrasound technology to receive FDA approval for a non-surgical brow, jowl and neck lift. It is used on areas of the face and neck that address sagging of the cheek, jawline, marionette lines, chin as well as brows and eyelids. Single areas may be treated or full face and neck for a more complete lift. A visible lift is commonly seen immediately following the procedure, with optimal results occurring over three to six months. There are no pre or post treatment restrictions. No down time, surgery, incisions, injections or scars and it’s done in thirty to sixty minutes. Technology is providing amazing ways to stay safely looking young!

Relief is right here in the West Valley Dr. Kukurin was named a Top Chiropractor by the Consumers Research Council of America. He is listed in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare. With over 20 years of experience using acupuncture, chiropracticand science based nutritional therapies, the results produced by our methods have been featured on local TV newscasts, published in scientific journals, indexed in the National Library of Medicine and have been presented Knee Pain at medical conferences at Johns Hopkins and the Peripheral Nerve Society.
Diabetic Neuropathy, Peripheral Neuropathy Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis If you are suffering from lower back, buttocks and or leg pain or your feet or legs are cramping, numb or burning especially at night, you almost certainly have a condition which involves the nerves of the legs. The largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve (pictured in red to the right), starts in the lower back, runs through the muscles of the buttocks and down to the tip of the toes. If this nerve gets irritated, you can experience really terrible pain anywhere along the course of the nerve. You may also experience burning, numbness and odd sensations in your muscles. Irritation of this nerve may produce severe cramping or crawling sensations in your muscles. Of course, your back and leg pain can be caused by a pinched nerve in your lower back. This can be from a vertebra that is out of place, it can be caused by a slipped disc or it can be caused by spinal stenosis or any combination of these problems. Each of these conditions, bad discs, spinal stenosis or displaced vertebrae have very different treatments. Knowing exactly why you have your back and leg troubles is absolutely essential for effective care.
Headaches, Vertigo, TMJ, Migraines, Sinus Headache Neck and Shoulder Pain, Pinched Nerves, Tennis Elbow and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Spinal Stenosis, Sciatica, Lower Back, Hip and Leg Pain
So how do you find results? The answer is called Integrative Neurology. Neurology is the study of the nerves. This allows us to diagnose tough nerve conditions like spinal stenosis, disc problems and neuropathy. What happens next truly separates our integrative neurology approach from anything else available to help correct lower back, hip, leg and foot problems. We have pioneered techniques to decompress nerves, but also use a number of natural substances that have been shown in recent scientific studies to help nerves re-grow and repair. There are no current drugs that can do this. But that’s not all. We combine special electrical stimulation techniques with acupuncture. A combination that has been shown to correct abnormal nerve function and promote nerve repair. There simply is no better or more comprehensive system for diagnosing and correcting the cause of spinal stenosis, neuropathy and other conditions that cause lower back, hip and leg pain and numbness. Together We Can Make a Difference...
“Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. ~2 Corinthians 9:15 Welcome to our December issue. As the holiday season is upon us, and we find ourselves reflecting on the past year, we must not forget the reason this is one of the most celebrated seasons.
Luke 2:14
Here are a few Bible verses to help you keep your focus on the spirit of the season.
Philippians 2:8-10
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Matthew 2:10
James 1:17
When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Isaiah 7:14
Luke 2:10-12 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
Luke 2:15-16 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
1 John 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 15:13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. Until next time, wishing you and yours blessed, healthy and safe holidays!
God Bless You for Your Support! Here to serve,

Quintero Golf Club
The Valley’s hidden golfing gem Arizona’s gorgeous winters and sunny, clear days make our state one of the top golf destinations in the country. Located in a secluded area of Peoria, the Rees Jonesdesigned Quintero Golf Club offers players a magnificent, lush desert environment with impeccably groomed greens. Most recently ranked by Golf Digest among “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” for the 2017 and 2018 seasons, Quintero was named the highest-ranked course in Arizona according to the list. In fact, Quintero Golf Club is now one of the most acclaimed golf courses in the United States, with a long list of accolades that has been rolling in since the golf course opened. Awards include being named “Best Public Course” by both Golf Digest and Golf Weekly magazines in 2016. “We have always believed that we have the most beautiful and rewarding courses in the country, and it’s very humbling to hear the pros agree with us,” says General Manager Mike Poe. “Word of mouth in the elite golfing community has really propelled us forward, yet we’re still a hidden gem to many in the Valley.” To be ranked as a “top golf course,” design is the critical point. Rees Jones designed a championship course to provide players with the purest golf experience, testing the skills of even the most seasoned pros, according to Poe.
Quintero offers a world-class golfing experience in every detail. Carved out of the pristine natural desert, the lush course is seamlessly groomed, and has been designed in the tradition of the most celebrated courses in the world. Nestled in the high Sonoran Desert, close to Lake Pleasant in the Hieroglyphic Mountains, and at an elevation of between 1,986 and 2,670 feet, the entire property is unique in that federal lands, providing you with the ultimate privacy and security, surround it. “Beyond our world-class 18 holes of spectacular mountain golf, the facility has been created to be harmonious with the natural surroundings, which include lush collections of native trees and cactus,” says Poe. “Once here you will notice the Saguaro, Ocotillo, Ironwood, Palo Verde and Acacia everywhere you look.” Beyond the astounding natural beauty of the course and the environment, the Club provides members impressive amenities, as you would expect for a truly world-class golfing experience. Four luxurious villas are available to rent for a carefree and relaxing getaway after a day on the greens. These vacation homes include state-of-the-art amenities, spacious bedrooms, private balconies, pools and spas. While the Quintero team keeps busy maintaining their high-profile status, they always take time to give back to the community. Each year, they are proud to host the Junior Golf Association of Arizona (JGAA) Cactus Cup on their property.

Sun Cities CareGivers
Providing quality in-home non-medical care For many West Valley seniors, being able to stay within their own homes as they age is a priority. To do so, sometimes, quality in-home help is required. Luckily, since 2002, Sun Cities CareGivers has been providing affordable personal care services to seniors in Peoria, Glendale, Sun City, Sun City West, Sun City Grand, Corte Bella, Vistancia, and neighboring communities of the West Valley in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. “Sun Cities CareGivers provides assistance with activities of daily living so our clients can remain safe and independent at home,” explains founder Lola Judy. Services include (but aren’t limited to): transportation for shopping or appointments, light housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation, personal care assistance, companionship, medication reminders and care coordination. “All of the caregivers are carefully screened prior to employment,” Judy says. “This detailed screening process includes a criminal background check, fingerprinting, verification of clean driving record, references from previous employment and valid licenses.” Judy adds that all of the company’s caregivers are trained in CPR, certified in first aid and are screened for TB (tuberculosis). “Most of our expert caregivers have been with the team since our inception,” she says. This fall, Judy transferred ownership of Sun Cities Caregivers to Addus HomeCare to have more time to be a caregiver for a loved one.
“I am excited to announce that Sun Cities CareGivers has recently joined the Addus HomeCare family, one of the nation’s largest home care providers,” she says. “All of the rest of the team will remain and continue the great work that has been done over the last fifteen years. I will continue to be a friend to my staff and clients and want to send my heartfelt good wishes and thanks to everyone.” Travis Blaser, MHA, the regional vice president of operations (Southwest) for Addus, notes that “since 1979, Addus has served families at home, providing quality inhome supportive services to those in need.” “Our approach is simple: we provide great care and we pay attention. In the conduct of providing our services, we watch for important changes in health condition so we can promptly get that information to the appropriate health resource,” Blaser adds. “The essence of our vision is that the strategy of quality care begins in the home. Service goals focus on keeping consumers happy, healthy and safe in their homes.” “With this new partnership, Sun Cities CareGivers will be able to continue our outstanding local care model while receiving the additional backing and support of a national company,” Blaser assures. “The only change we anticipate is even more enhancement to our already outstanding services.” In addition to caregivers, the company employs registered nurses who perform client assessments, design the care plans, supervise the caregivers and act as the liaison between clients, medical professionals and family members, says Natalie Henrichsen, who handles sales and marketing for Sun Cities CareGivers.
6 December 2017 |

“Client safety is a top priority so our nurses work closely with the scheduling department to carefully match clients to caregivers who can best meet their needs,” Henrichsen says. “We strive to meet both the physical and emotional needs of our clients by carefully choosing their caregiver.” In addition to the registered nurses, Sun Cities CareGivers also employs a memory care specialist who provides training for its caregivers. “Our memory care specialist can also work with the family members of our clients who are experiencing memory loss or suffer from dementia,” Henrichsen explains.
Judy says that the Sun Cities CareGivers team follows the scope of best practices established by the Home Care Association of America and is a member of the Arizona Assisted Living Federation of America, Arizona Chapter. “Sun Cities CareGivers has also been a long-time supporter of Benevilla, a nonprofit social services organization that serves the West Valley,” she adds. Overall, Sun Cities CareGivers strives to live up to its operating philosophy stated by Judy: “We are not a business selling services. We are a company building relationships and providing compassionate care.”

“Best medical facility and staff in the Valley, hands down, in my opinion. Highly recommend them if you need help due to chronic pain.” – Nancy K. “
” – Cindy E. “I’ve been competing in strength athletics since the age of 15 and have been competing at a professional level for the last 5 years. It wasn’t until 2014 that I needed to seek treatment for a patella tendon tear that I received while competing at the Commerce World’s Strongest Man in China. I had only heard about PRP treatments and the great benefits that it could have on one’s injuries - that’s when I found Dr. Lundquist at Active Life Physical Medicine & Pain Center in Avondale, Arizona. To this day, I have received Orthovisc injections to both knees along with PRP. I have also received PRP treatments for muscle tears and other tendon tears that I’ve obtained while competing at World’s Strongest Man. I feel that without Dr. Lundquist knowledge in sports medicine and PRP that I would have had to have surgery. The PRP treatments have played a huge role in keeping me at an elite level. I have and will continue to refer other athletes for their injuries to Dr. Lundquist.” — Jerry Pritchett, 2x World Strongest Man Finalist

Local "Kidpreneur" Collects Nearly $10,000 for Ovarian Cancer Research While many kids were playing video games this past summer, 9-year-old Chloe Cundiff was pounding the pavement for ovarian cancer research. The pint-sized entrepreneur was busy setting up her lemonade stand at The Henry, The Sparkle Bar, TGen, CBRE, Cushman & Wakefield, and Hines. That’s because, when Chloe was about 6 years old, she lost her grandmother to ovarian cancer. All of the funds that Chloe raised through her stand will be given to Colleen’s Dream Foundation, which will in turn be donated to TGen to further research for early detection of ovarian cancer. Chloe is the grand-prize winner of the “Take a Lemonade Stand” program, which donated 100 lemonade stands to Arizona kids this past summer to teach them entrepreneurial skills and instill a spirit of community giving. 22 December 2017 | azhealthandliving.com

INSPIRATIONAL HOMETOWN DOCS
NEVER LOSE FAITH
By Michelle Talsma Everson
Family Inspiration
A local doctor flourishes in audiology To many parents, their children inspire them in some way. It may be a social media post or a work of art. But, to Shanna M. Mortensen-Dewsnup, Au.D., CCC-A, FAAA, her son inspired her to go into the field of audiology to help better understand his diagnosis. Her eldest son, Brenden, now 18, was born with moderate to severe hearing loss. During her studies, she realized that he had Usher syndrome, which is characterized by both hearing and vision loss (he was diagnosed as blind at age 12, and diagnosed with Usher syndrome at that age as well). “While I was in school, I took a difficult genetics class and we studied all of the syndromes associated with hearing loss. It was one of the hardest classes in my doctoral program,” Mortensen-Dewsnup recalls. “...Well, about three years later, I started noticing symptoms of vision problems. I knew something wasn't right… At this time, he was showing all of the symptoms of Usher syndrome and I took him in again to have his eyes thoroughly checked… About a week later, she called me and confirmed that I was correct and said that he was already in the worst stages of the retinal disease ‘retinitis pigmentosa’ and would need to start learning Braille immediately and using a white cane immediately. Talk about a whirlwind of emotions!” To be closer to family support, Mortensen-Dewsnup moved to Arizona. She says that she is thrilled to share that Brenden is doing amazing now. “He is in all of the honors AP classes and in his senior year of high school,” she says. “He plays concert piano and plays the bells in the marching band… Despite being able to see only 5 degrees of central vision in each eye, he navigates around with his cane and hearing aids and is the most positive young man you will ever meet. He is such an inspiration to everyone who meets him.” In addition to her son Brenden, Mortensen-Dewsnup also has a son named Ian, 16. “As a single mom, my major motivation was my kids and not giving up. I knew that I wanted to provide a better life for my boys,” Mortensen-Dewsnup says. “My oldest had hearing loss, speech delay, and was getting therapy for high functioning 24

Asperger’s. My life was studying, therapy sessions with my oldest, and activities with my youngest so he didn't feel left out. It was hard to juggle everything as well as the intense coursework for my doctoral degree.” “I had to prove to them that we could do it, even if it was hard,” she continues. “I didn't want them to know how poor we really were so I found ways to do fun things outdoors that were cheap and or free to still give them as good as a life as possible.” Photo by Caitlin Wetmore
Once home in Arizona, Mortensen-Dewsnup met her husband Kevin. “We talked a lot about why I went into audiology and what I really wanted to do. I didn't feel like I was following my passion for audiology where I was working. That is when we decided to start our own practice,” she says. “He came up with the name Happy Ears Hearing Center because he said ‘you make people happy again and give them hope.’” “We have grown our office to two locations and employ audiologists and staff who share the same passion that we do and plan to continue to grow to offer services to the East Valley,” she adds.
Mortensen-Dewsnup notes that, at her successful practice, her team prides themselves in helping people hear better. “Everyone in the office has some sort of relationship with hearing loss,” she notes. “There is nothing better than seeing the smile on an individual’s face when they experience hearing for the first time, or hearing again after years of missing out on hearing their spouses’ or family’s voices,” she says. “I love what I do. It is very rewarding to see how much it changes lives.”

The Differences Between Hot and Cold Therapies Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body's white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body's immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy. The following breakdown should not replace a physician's advice, but it can help patients battling inflammation better understand both treatment options.
Heat therapy According to the Merck Manual, a reference book for physicians and patients alike, heat works against inflammation by increasing blood flow and making connective tissues more flexible. Heat also can be used to combat edema, a condition characterized by an excess of fluid in the tissues of the body. Upon application, heat can temporarily reduce pain and alleviate stiffness in the joints. Heat also may temporarily relieve muscles spasms. The Cleveland Clinic notes that heat can be effective at relieving pain associated with worn-away cartilage in the joints because it eases chronically stiff joints and relaxes tight muscles. In addition, moist heat can relax painful neck spasms linked to nerves or blood vessels in the head or pain emanating from muscles in the neck. Heat can be applied via hot packs, infrared heat, paraffin baths and hydrotherapy. 30
e e ber 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
Cold therapy Cold therapy sometimes referred to as "cryotherapy," can relieve pain associated with inflammation that has developed recently. Cold can help numb tissues and relieve muscle spasms and can also be used to alleviate pain associated with injuries. The Merck Manual notes that ice bags or cold packs can be used to apply cold. In addition, fluids that cool by evaporation, including ethyl chloride, may be applied topically. Some medicines may interact with ethyl chloride spray, so inflammation sufferers should consult their physicians before applying such sprays. According to the Cleveland Clinic, ice can be used to calm flare-ups and numb pain associated with chronic, inflammatory arthritis. Ice also can ease inflammation and numb pain linked to pulled muscles or injured tendons. Pain and inflammation resulting from the stretching or tearing of ligaments in the joints may also be eased by applying ice to the affected area. Heat and cold therapies can effectively combat symptoms associated with inflammation, but such treatments should always be discussed with a physician before being instituted.
Avoid Medical Mishaps this Holiday By MS
The holiday season might not be the most hazardous time of the year, but there is an uptick in safety concerns during this season of festivity and fun. Components of the holiday season such as decorating, shopping, celebrating and traveling, carry some risk. The National Fire Protection Association says 30 percent of all home fires occur during the months of December, January and February. But fire is not the only concern during the holiday season. Revelers who celebrate a bit too much can pose a threat, as can road weary travelers or overnight guests who unknowingly put loved ones in harm's way during their stays. Thankfully, many accidents that occur during the holiday season are avoidable if holiday celebrants focus on safe ways to celebrate.
Choking: To keep up with the hustle and bustle of the season, many people must eat on the go. The National Safety Council says nearly 3,000 people in the United States die each year from choking. Taking small bites and chewing completely, while also avoiding talking while chewing, can help. Children should be kept away from small decorations, as even pine needles can be a choking hazard. Toxic plants: Some plants, including mistletoe and holly, can be toxic to pets and young children whose smaller bodies may be more vulnerable than adults. When decorating, consider decorating with artificial plants instead of live, potentially poisonous plants. Alcohol-related incidents: Holiday fun frequently involves alcoholic beverages. Law enforcement officials point out that the rate of driving while intoxicated tends to increase during the holidays. Implementing strict "designated driver" rules and making contact information for taxi or ridesharing services readily available to holiday guests can prevent tragedies. Medicine mishaps: Relatives visiting for Christmas may bring their prescription medications along when staying overnight. Curious children may encounter the drugs and think they're candy, so encourage guests to place their medications in childproof bottles or containers. azhealthandliving.com |

SPIRIT
By Aaron Hill, Greg Miller and Jack Skeen co-authors of The Circle Blueprint: Decoding the Conscious and Unconscious Factors that Determine Your Success
Why You Should Stop Comparing Yourself to Others Now Everyone gets caught up in the comparison game. Chances are you do too. Haven't you gazed with envy at a friend's house, car, job or wardrobe, or made a snap judgment that a co-worker or acquaintance is beneath you in intelligence, social status or some other criteria? Sure you have. Research from the 1950s shows that people have a natural drive to make "upward" or "downward" comparisons between themselves and others. And due to social media, we can now look at posts from friends and acquaintances and assess how we "measure up" on a daily (or even hourly) basis. Can this be good for us? No. In fact, spending too much time or energy studying the proverbial "Joneses" or ranking others is harmful to all involved.
Now, take note of how such comparisons affect your thoughts and actions. Are you holding something back
Comparing establishes your own worth by whether or not you feel better or worse than others. It's an unhealthy waste of time that undermines your ability to reach your full potential. And it's a widespread problem. But most people who engage in comparing themselves to others don't realize how damaging it really can be.
Practice reducing such comparisons. When you catch yourself comparing, try to stop. Remind yourself that comparisons are not healthy for you.
People who make a lot of comparisons and constantly assess the inferiority or superiority of others are low in autonomy. People with high autonomy, on the other hand, live free of comparison and are able to rely healthily on themselves and others. When you're able to establish your own self-worth regardless of how you stack up to others, you go a long way toward establishing independence.
because you think you are too good or not good enough? Do you act differently toward those who are "upward" or "downward" of you?
Practice treating all people you come in contact with at the same levels of courtesy and respect. Sure, it is unlikely you'll meet a stranger with the same greeting as a good friend—it might be strange to all involved if you hugged a complete stranger as you would someone you know and love—but your greeting can be similarly pleasant and respectful.
The good news is, there are easy steps you can take to quit comparing yourself to others and become more autonomous, and, thus, more independent:
Become aware of how free you feel. When you stop
Make a point to notice how often you make comparisons. If you want, take a notepad and make tally
It's time to stop worrying about who has more Facebook friends, who's got the bigger paycheck, or who has the greatest house. In the end, knowing who has more or less than we do accomplishes nothing. Instead, we should all focus our attention on becoming better versions of ourselves—because that's the true measure of success.
marks every time you catch yourself making a comparison. The number may astonish you, and that is okay; everyone makes comparisons. You have to start somewhere, and simply taking note is a start toward reducing your comparisons. 32 December 2017| azhealthandliving.com
comparing, or even reducing your comparisons drastically, you'll feel a new level of autonomy and independence.
Face Fears for a Productive Life By MS
Persistent or irrational fears are known as phobias. Some people may fear specific animals, while others may be fearful of particular situations, such as social events. The intensity with which some people experience fear can be mild, while others may be debilitated by their fears. Psych Central states that traumatic events often trigger the development of specific phobias, and women are slightly more likely to experience these types of fears than men. The National Institute of Mental Health says approximately 4 to 5 percent of the U.S. population has one or more clinically significant phobias in a given year. Learning to move past fears can help people live fuller lives. Fortunately, the NIMH notes that there are effective treatments available to help people with phobias. People willing to step outside of their comfort zones can conquer their fears.
Recognize the fear The first step in beating a phobia is acknowledging its existence. Live Science says going to the dentist, dogs, flying, spiders/bugs, the dark, and heights are some of the more common phobias. Individuals also can benefit by recognizing that others share their fears.
Gradual exposure Exposure therapy is an effective way to treat phobias, says Psychology Today. Increase exposure to the fear incrementally. For example, people with a fear of dogs can look at photos of dogs before moving on to videos. Gradually, such individuals can work toward sitting in a room with a leashed dog that is safely secured, and then eventually advance to petting a dog.
Seek help If a person cannot find relief alone, professionals can help them overcome their fears. azhealthandliving.com |

Q. Why should I see a doctor for spider veins? A. Spider veins are typically small red, purple, or blue veins visible near the surface of your skin on your face or legs; their twisting, "multilegged" appearance is the origin of their name. Spider veins are typically a progressive condition that worsens over time. If they are not treated, your spider veins are likely to grow and cause more noticeable symptoms as you age. Untreated spider veins can sometimes lead to rashes or skin ulcers and soft tissue infections in the lower extremities. While varicose veins appear primarily on the legs, spider veins can also appear on the face, causing cosmetic concerns about their visibility. Spider veins can sometimes be an indication of other medical conditions or venous disease. Although smaller than varicose veins, spider veins can still cause cosmetic concerns or uncomfortable symptoms. The most common symptoms of spider veins include: Itching Aching Heaviness Cramps Having your spider veins evaluated can help your doctor determine whether they might be a symptom of an underlying condition that also requires treatment. You don't need to live with the cosmetic or comfort concerns that spider veins cause, call and schedule an appointment today.

Q. I think I have a hernia. What are Q. How can I keep the holidays safe Q. Is temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) related to sleep-disordered my options and when should I seek for my pets? breathing? medical attention? A. Holidays are a wonderful time for A. A hernia occurs when an abdominal organ gathering with friends and family, but can A. Temporomandibular joint disorder or other tissue has abnormally protruded through the abdominal wall cavity. They may cause little to no pain at first. A hernia can be in your groin, on your abdomen, or associated with a previous scar. A bulge or hernia that is associated with redness, nausea, or severe pain can mean a strangulated hernia. A strangulated hernia is always a dangerous condition in which the blood supply to the hernia and to its contents is cut off. It must be addressed immediately before sepsis sets in, which can lead to death. A hernia will not go away on its own and will not get better. Delaying treatment can only increase your risk for strangulation and increase your risk for complications. A strangulated hernia will require a traditional open surgery, a 3-5 day hospital stay, as well as a prolonged recovery time. Laparoscopic surgery is best instituted early on, where healing, recovery, and postoperative pain are all significantly improved over traditional open surgery. A laparoscopic procedure allows for smaller incisions, quicker recovery, less pain and no hospital stay. Typically, the procedure can be done through three micro incisions in less than an hour. Now is the time to address your hernia, don’t wait for complications. Your health should come first.

bring stress and even danger for pets. Keep these tips in mind.
• Food for Thought. Keep your animals’ diets consistent. People treats that can make pets ill include: chocolate, macadamia nuts, xylitol, fatty or spicy foods, onion, garlic, bones and alcoholic beverages. Keep an eye on your pets around food or drinks and secure trash can lids. • Oh, Christmas Tree. Anchor your tree upright so it won’t tip over. Avoid glass ornaments that can break and tinsel, string, or ribbons on trees and packages that can block intestines if swallowed. • Holiday Plants. Holly, mistletoe, and lilies can be quite toxic if ingested, while poinsettias can irritate the mouth and esophagus. • Party Time. Party noise, crowds and extra activity can cause stress and anxiety for pets. Have a quiet area where animals can go to escape the noise and feel safe. • Wires. Keep wires and batteries out of your pets’ reach to avoid potentially lethal electric shock or burning of the mouth and esophagus. • Pet Toys. Give your pets safe stocking stuffers —too big to swallow and indestructible—or toys that allow you to place healthy treats inside. (TMD) can be very painful and is often accompanied by headaches, toothaches and more bizarre symptoms. Sleep-disordered breathing symptoms can both overlap and mimic those of sleep-disordered breathing. Many dentists consider temporomandibular joint problems to be somewhat of a gray area because the conditions associated with its complex task of permitting the movement of the jaw without friction is sometimes difficult to define and even more complicated to treat.
Some dentists believe that sleep-disordered breathing is partly the existence of a temporomandibular joint problem and partly the manifestation of a sleep-disordered breathing problem. The simplest way to understand the connection: the bruxism (teeth grinding) or jaw shifting associated with sleep-disordered breathing (occurring when sleeping patients are unconsciously trying to find the best possible positioning of their airway) may inflame the temporomandibular joint or exacerbate a problem with the joint that was pre-existing. Headaches, a clicking jaw, malocclusion (misalignment of teeth), and condyle and disc displacement are all associated with sleep-disordered breathing. However, these symptoms often occur in patients with sleepdisordered breathing as well. Research in the journal Sleep determined in 1993 that nocturnal headaches may be caused by temporomandibular joint disorder, or triggered by sleep-disordered breathing - “with very similar clinical manifestations but very different therapeutic implications.” If you have temporomandibular joint disorder, I suggest you ask your dentist to screen you for sleep-disordered breathing.

tooth. Both types of veneers cover the visible portions of the teeth, repair imperfections, straighten and lengthen teeth, conceal stains or discoloration, and are naturally stain resistant. However, there are distinct differences between the two types of veneers.
Like traditional veneers, Lumineers are designed to give you a beautiful, natural smile. However, unlike traditional veneers, Lumineers do not require any shots, drilling, or pain. And, most importantly, because no enamel is removed from the teeth, Lumineers are reversible! Lumineers are custom-made like traditional porcelain veneers to fit each individual’s mouth. However, Lumineers are ultra-thin (only about 0.2mm) and highly translucent. This translucence allows them to replicate the natural appearance of enamel. They are also very durable and can last up to 20 years. The procedure takes only two office visits and approximately one hour to place the Lumineers. There is no pain involved in the procedure as the Lumineers are so thin that little to no enamel will need to be removed, completely eliminating the need for needles and local anesthesia. You will need to see your dentist to determine if you are a good candidate for Lumineers. Those who have very dark stains or discoloration will not be good candidates as the dark color may show through the ultra-thin layer of Lumineers. Also, those with a very “tight bite” or who grind or clench their teeth are not good candidates. Those who do not qualify for Lumineers may be good candidates for porcelain veneers and should talk to their doctor about their options. – Dr. Chang SC Dental Group 623.242.1235

damage from the Valley’s sun. Skin gets damaged by the sun, weather and aging. Certain types of professions that involve being in the sun, smoking and sunbathing accelerate skin damage.
Facial treatments are always where I start to reverse the ageing process. For most of my younger patients, I have a host of noninvasive procedures I can offer. However, when it comes to extensive sun damage and deep wrinkles, nothing compares to the Hetter Peel formula. With its active ingredient of croton oil, it will address the textural changes of the skin, leaving a healthier and younger appearance. A Hetter Peel gives my patients a lasting effect of a dramatically smoother complexion by tightening the skin and improving the appearance of age spots and pigmentation problems. It also treats wrinkles around the mouth, forehead furrows and crow’s feet. As I apply the peel, it penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin, addressing textural changes in the skin. It gets rid of smoker’s lines, deep leather-like lines, sunspots, uneven skin tone and redness. The drawback of this procedure is that it requires some downtime. As long as I can schedule the procedure so it works with the patient’s schedule, it’s well worth its drawbacks.

term for a range of conditions that primarily affect the neurons in the human brain. Neurons are the building blocks of the central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord. Neurodegenerative diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, affect millions of people worldwide and the prevalence is increasing. The risk of being affected by a neurodegenerative disease increases dramatically with age.
NeuroQuant is an innovative medical software that can accurately provide valuable information to physicians to aid in diagnosis of various neurological conditions. The software combines MRI images of the brain with volumetric measurements of various parts of brain, mainly involved in degenerative process such as ventricles, hippocampus and basal ganglia. The software then compares these volumes to a normative data range to help physicians understand if these structures have atrophied and whether this atrophy is significant. A report with this information is automatically generated and provides greater visual and quantitative information, adding a layer of objectivity for the overall assessment by your doctor and the radiologist reading your MRI. This information can help your doctor more accurately diagnose the disease, treat symptoms and follow the progression of the disease/condition by tracking trends over time. A standard brain MRI used in conjunction with NeuroQuant can be a powerful tool to help aid in the evaluation of Alzheimer’s disease, Epilepsy, Traumatic brain injury, Multiple Sclerosis and brain development in children.

Q. What will help combat holiday stress? A. The holidays can be accompanied by stressful times. The dictionary defines stress as “a specific response by the body to a demand put upon it.” Personal health and wellness can go beyond the absence of major illnesses. It involves resiliency, an ability to enjoy life, and maintain balance. During the holiday season we can lose these elements of well-being due to the many pressures that can come with the demands it brings: office parties, family gatherings, shopping for gifts and the many other events during this busy time of year. A few tips to help lessen the pressure: stay organized, make use of check lists and calendars, listen to relaxing music, maintain healthy social relationships, surround yourself with people who are positive and optimistic, exercise regularly, practice relaxation techniques, get plenty of rest, eat healthy and last, and consider taking nutritional supplements.

Q. I always want to help in some way during the holidays, but never know where to start – any ideas? A. With so many needs in the community,
it is sometimes difficult to choose a favorite charity. It is especially important during the holiday season to find ways to give back, whether it is with a monetary donation or a gift of time. Our favorite year-round charity is our local food bank and we encourage everyone to think of the food banks during the holiday season. While they are always in need of your food donations, consider a cash gift as a way to give back this year. They can make your dollars stretch much farther and your cash donations allow them to purchase the items they need the most. The holidays are also a great time to give the gift of your time as a volunteer. Skilled care centers, assisted living facilities and senior centers are just a few places where there are folks who would enjoy a friendly visitor, and some of their activities departments use volunteers to help with planned activities. Whatever your choice for giving back, do take time to count your blessings and share with others less fortunate this holiday season. PARENTING
E PRESENT
By MS
Charities that Help Children in Need Having a child or becoming a parent or caregiver to a youngster can change a person profoundly. Perhaps that's why many people will rally to do whatever is necessary to offer assistance when children become sick, injured or need help. Children's charities can pluck at the heartstrings, but prospective volunteers or donors should still do their homework and research a given charity before deciding to help. Charity Navigator, the Better Business Bureau and other watchdog groups are great sources of reliable information that can help prospective donors make smart giving decisions. Researching children's charities also may shed light on some of the lesser-known charities that do excellent work. The following are a handful of children's charities whose missions may resonate with those who want to help.
Cards for Hospitalized Kids This organization gathers donated handmade or purchased cards from various people or groups from around the country (and even the globe) and distributes them to hospitals that service children across America. Making a card is a great service project for scouts, students, or families who want to help. CFHK finds that cards can brighten the days of children facing serious illnesses or injuries. Cards are accepted year-round and distributed monthly. Volunteers in the Chicago area also can help sort cards the operation office in the Windy City. Learn more at www.cardsforhospitalizedkids.com.
Alex's Lemonade Stand This organization began in 2000 when then a 4-year-old Alexandra "Alex" Scott, who was a cancer patient, wanted to create a lemonade stand to raise money and help find a cure for children with cancer. Scott died four years after the charity's inception, but her project grew by leaps and bounds and has helped to raise money for 500 research grants given to over 100 organizations. More information is available at www.alexlemonade.org.

Project Linus Named after the blanket-loving "Peanuts" character, Linus, this group makes sure that children who are ill or who have gone through trauma have a cozy blanket to snuggle. Volunteers create and donate homemade, washable blankets. More information is available at www.projectlinus.org.
Newborns in Need Giving birth to a premature baby can be emotionally taxing on families, especially those who may be unready for the financial toll of giving birth to a preemie. Preemies may need specialized care and clothing. Newborns in Need provides clothing and blankets for premature babies in need at hospitals, shelters and private homes. Kids’ Vitamin Deficiency Signs By MS
A healthy diet is supposed to provide all of the essential vitamins and minerals necessary to sustain a body. But thanks to finicky eating habits and limited choices, many children are not getting the vitamins and minerals they need to grow up healthy. Although many foods are fortified with certain vitamins, they still may not be enough to provide the level of nutrition required for a growing body. Parents may be wellinformed of a child's needs of vitamin C to boost immune system function, but they may not be as readily informed about other vitamins that are essential to human health.
Vitamin A: Vitamin A promotes a healthy immune system and proper eyesight function. A child lacking in vitamin A may be tired and weak and experience weight loss. Other symptoms include dry eyes, skin scaling and respiratory infections. Vitamin B-6: Hyperactivity and impulsiveness are often
blamed on an underlying medical condition, such as ADHD. But such conditions may be the result of a deficiency in vitamin B-6.
Vitamin B-12: Nervous system function is largely governed by proper levels of vitamin B-12. Children who do not receive enough vitamin B-12 may experience weakness, insomnia, edema and abdominal pain. Vitamin D: Vitamin D is called the "sunshine vitamin" because it is produced in the body after exposure to the sun. Children who spend many hours indoors or wearing thick layers of sunscreen may not get enough vitamin D. Irritability, muscle cramps and even late teething could be tied to vitamin D deficiency. Parents should consult with pediatricians about the proper levels of vitamins children need. azhealthandliving.com |

Six Tricks & Tips to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain When you think about the holiday season, it conjures up images of twinkling lights, perfectly wrapped presents, and tables laden with the most delicious holiday dishes. It's also a time when most people toss their healthy eating habits to the wayside. By the time the New Year rolls around, the gifts you've received aren't the only things you've gained. In fact, it's become such a common occurrence that the annual holiday weight gain of five to 7 pounds is just accepted by most of us. We shrug it off and make resolutions to exercise more and eat better. But it's a bigger problem than you think—and making a few simple tweaks to your normal routine can make a world of difference. If you want to get through the holidays without feeling like you've totally failed again, making a conscious decision about your lifestyle is the first step. This volatile combination of food and stress can easily snowball into feelings of guilt. Guilt only perpetuates the cycle and causes you to feel more out of control. By approaching the holiday season with an awareness of its temptations but also arming yourself with a plan to combat these, you'll be able to truly enjoy the season. Read on for six tricks that will help you avoid packing on the pounds this holiday season:
Don't let worry about weight gain turn into guilt. It shouldn't be simply weight gain people concern themselves with. The feelings and situations that cause overeating should be your main focus. If you stop thinking so much about gaining weight and start focusing on the feelings that lead to the behavior, you'll finally be able to stop the cycle. Have a pre-party plan. Recognizing your love of honeyglazed ham and dressing is the first step to waistline recovery! Approaching the holidays with a renewed awareness of your tendency to overindulge is paramount in stopping this behavior. Behaviors don't change on their own; it's got to be by design. Simple tricks like drinking water and eating before the party 46 December 2017 | azhealthandliving.com
allow you to make the event more about socializing than snacking
Don't use the holidays as an excuse to overeat. Many of us think, what the heck, it's the holidays. I might as well just enjoy myself and worry about my battle of the bulge in 2018. But the best time to start weight maintenance is not after the holidays—it's now! Focus on your friends and family—not the food. When you walk into your company's holiday party or your daughter's dance recital, don't hone in on the snack table. While the hors d'oeuvres table might be crowded with treats and people, focus on socializing with friends and family instead of on the food. Remember, conversation is calorie-free! When you go to holiday gatherings, slow down, enjoy the atmosphere and then think about eating. Most people will already be on their second (or third!) plate, and you'll still be on track with your healthy lifestyle.
Pick what you want. Seeing all of the holiday goodies and knowing you're not supposed to have any is about as tempting as temptations get. Try the one-a-day approach of indulging in one goodie each day. And don't be fooled
by the hidden dangers of liquid calories. Those pumpkin spice lattes are just as calorie-ridden as an actual slice of pumpkin pie! Allow yourself to select foods you like the most and skip foods you can have any other time of the year. Taking the time to savor every bite in a relaxed manner will make those goodies taste so much better, and you'll feel satisfied more quickly and eat less!
Welcome the winter wonderland. Think of all the fun winter activities you used to do as a kid—sledding, skiing and ice skating, just to name a few. Who says you have to stop enjoying winter just because you're an adult? Plan a weekend ski trip with your girlfriends or go caroling in your neighborhood. The options are endless for winter fun. Winter has a lot of special activities that you're not able to do year-round. Think of all the winter traditions you can start or continue with your family and friends just by finding ways to have fun outside. If you're having fun, it doesn't feel like you're exercising. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle shouldn't get in the way of the excitement and joy of the holidays. Simply being aware of the season's many temptations can increase your weight loss odds. At the end of the day, it's the time spent enjoying the holidays that really matters.

“Actress, producer, New York Times’ bestselling author and inspirational speaker, Candace Cameron Bure is both outspoken and passionate about her family and faith,” cites her official website. “…With an acting career that started at the age of five, Candace grew up in show business alongside her brother Kirk Cameron and has appeared in countless national television commercials, prime-time hits, made for TV movies and feature films.” According to her website, Cameron Bure is as dedicated to her family as she is her career. She’s has been married to former NHL star Val Bure since 1996 and the couple have three children. The busy family lives in both Los Angeles and Napa Valley. Last month, Cameron Bure released her fourth book called “Staying Stylish: Cultivating a Confident Look, Style, & Attitude.” 48

“Go behind the scenes with Candace Cameron Bure as she shares 100 tips and tricks for feeling your best—both inside and out,” reads the book’s description. “’Staying Stylish’ topics will include personal style, fresh hair and makeup for any age, a well-balanced diet and fitness regime, and a well-nourished spirit.” In addition to staying active in her career, Cameron Bure is a big proponent for staying physically active, inspiring many followers with regular workouts on social media. “I feel the most fit and strong that I’ve ever felt in my life,” Bure recently shared with PEOPLE magazine. “What keeps me on track is that I want to feel good and have a long life with my husband [Valeri Bure, 42] and kids [daughter Natasha, 18, and sons Lev, 16, and Maksim, 15].” She also promotes healthy eating and is candid with media outlets about her prior struggles with an eating disorder —a struggle she shares in interviews that she overcame thanks to her faith and physical activity. “I feel a real sense of accomplishment about what my body can still do, and I want to keep it in shape and keep it strong for so many years that are ahead of me,” Cameron Bure told PEOPLE. “You kind of take your body for granted when you’re younger, so the older I get the prouder I am of the things I’m able to do with it.” Added to being vocal on social media and in interviews about healthy living, Cameron Bure is also open and honest about her faith. On her website, she shares how she came to the Christian faith and the positive impact it has had on her marriage, motherhood and career. “I like to love on people and let them know that they are valued,” Cameron Bure says in an interview with The Huffington Post. “People take inspiration from all different places. What makes life worthy is to be able to, famous or not, encourage people in whatever form they need.” Cameron Bure’s recipe for success is evident in her children’s accomplishments as well. For example, her daughter Natasha Bure, 18, has competed on “The Voice,” is a published author and has a YouTube page with more than 70,000 followers, according to the Rachel Ray Show. “It’s really about working hard. Don’t make excuses -it’s okay to fail, but do your best, and work hard and try,” Cameron Bure shares on the Rachel Ray Show. How to Finance Long-Term Care Needs Failing to plan for long-term care expenses may leave aging men and women with little or no assets late in life. AARP says that the cost of long-term care continues to rise and the array of options can make it difficult for families to find the best, most affordable care. The median monthly costs for a semi-private room in a U.S. nursing facility hovered around $6,800 in 2016, according to The Genworth Cost of Care Survey. That adds up to roughly $82,000 per year. Individuals who only anticipate hiring a home health aide should know that such options cost an average $3,800 per month. Retirement savings can quickly dry up when long-term care is required. Individuals need to keep in mind that, in 2014, the Social Security Administration said the average month retirement income from Social Security was just $1,294. The National Care Planning Council says that at least 60 percent of all individuals will need extended help during their lifetimes. Ongoing care can last for many months or years. Longterm care needs, including assisted living and nursing home stays beyond a few months, may not be covered by federal health insurance programs, such as Medicare. As a result, it is up to individuals to find ways to finance their care. Long-term care insurance Long-term care insurance is one of the ways to offset costs of care for later in life. But many people are unaware that this type of insurance exists. A survey conducted by Leger Marketing for the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association found that 74 percent of respondents said they haven't included provisions for long-term care in their retirement plans. Long-term care insurance is a safety precaution that can be purchased early in life to plan to help pay for expenses aging men and women may incur in their golden years. New York Life Insurance says that policyholders will be reimbursed for qualified long-term care costs up to a maximum daily benefit amount. Coverage varies, but policy premiums generally increase with the age of applicant. 50

Government aid Government aid is available for U.S. and Canadian residents but qualifications vary and it is usually limited to those with financial hardships. Medicaid pays for the largest share of long-term care services in the United States, according to the Administration on Aging. But to qualify, one's income must be below a certain level and the person must meet minimum state eligibility requirements. Financing long-term care is something individuals must consider as they make their plans for the future. It is a large expense that cannot go unaddressed even though the need for care might be in the distant future.
A2M – A NonSurgical “Cure” for Osteoarthritis and Inflammation is Here!
Wouldn’t it be great to wake up in the mornings without stiffness and pain in your arthritic joints? Or to take your dog for a long walk without worrying about “paying for it” the next day? Now, imagine being able to have like new joints – without replacement surgery. This is the promise of a protein molecule called Alpha-2-Macroglobulin, more commonly referred to as A2M. A2M is a recently discovered compound that arrests the degradation of the cartilage caused by osteoarthritis (OA) and protects the joint.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). The road to success is not straight. There is a curve called failure, a loop called confusion, speed bumps called friends, red lights called enemies, caution lights called family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called determination, an engine called perseverance, insurance called faith and a driver named Jesus—you will make it to a place called success.” – Author Unknown
